Martin Scorsese's Hugo ended up being one of my favorite films of the year, and I'm actually rooting for it to take home Best Picture at this year's Oscars. In anticipation of the awards ceremony and keeping the movie fresh on everyone's minds Paramount Pictures has released this wonderful behind the scenes video featurette called "The Magic of Hugo." The video features interviews with the director, cast, and crew as they share their thoughts on the film and what it means. It also contains a ton of footage from the film.

Hugo is the perfect movie for anyone that loves movies. It reminded me of why I love going to the movies, and why I do what I do. If you haven't seen this movie yet you should check it out if it's still playing in a theater near you.

Watch the new video featurette below, and tell us what you think! If you saw Hugo, what did you think?

Awesome Fan-Made STAR WARS Art for THE PHANTOM MENACE

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is the weakest of all George Lucas' Star Wars films. As you know, the movie is set to be released in 3D this weekend, and I will be one of the few Star Wars fans to give Lucas my money again. Regardless of how much I dislike the first movie, these fan-made posters that were made for it are very freakin' cool and well done.

I applaud the artist Travis English for being able to find artistic awesomeness in this terrible film. I also applaud him for not wasting his time on doing one for Jar-Jar.

Will you be going out to see The Phantom Menace in 3D this weekend?

Here's a hilarious video featuring French actor Jean Dujardin, who was nominated for his role in this year's hit film The Artist. The video features the actor auditioning for every stereotypical movie villain role in Hollywood. The video pokes fun at the fact that every time a European actor hits the jackpot with a big movie, the next part they end up playing is a villainous one in a big budget action film. Enjoy the video!

Morgan Freeman Joins Tom Cruise For OBLIVION

Joseph Kosinski's (Tron: Legacy) Oblivion has added Morgan Freeman to its cast. Superherohype reports that Freeman will join Tom Cruise, Andrea Riseborough, and Olga Kurylenko in the sci-fi film for Universal Pictures. Oblivion is based on Kosinski's comic book series from Radical Publishing. The story is described as follows:

In a future where the Earth's surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.

William Monahan and Karl Gajdusek wrote the first draft of the script, which is currently getting a rewrite from Michael Arndt. A July 19, 2013 release date is planned. I have always liked Freeman in just about every movie he's been in. His screen presence and voice are always so commanding.

5 Hilariously Bad Fan Concept Trailers

$
0
0

I've come across bad fan-made trailers in my day, but these five are the cream of the crop. Despite their bad quality, shoddy acting, or odd concepts I still found them entertaining, and I guarantee you will too.

5. The Return of Aquaman

If you didn't catch the part where the king of Atlantis left we're in the same boat. Regardless, Aquaman is plotting his return to the deep by visiting pet stores and practicing in his backyard pool. I have to say the Requiem For A Dream music was a nice touch, and at the end I found myself hoping he does one day reunite with Ariel.

4. Mega Man: The Movie

If you are going to make a fan trailer and try to pass it off as a real movie, there are a few rules that you should follow.

  1. Make sure your VFX doesn't look like a Nintendo 64 game.
  2. Hire enough extras so that your big science showcase has more than two people in the crowd.
  3. Never say, "We're not so different...you and I."
  4. Hide the like bar and disable comments.

Perhaps some things the creators of this short will keep in mind for next time.

3. Terminator 6: He's Back

The Terminator is back...in Canada. My favorite part of this trailer is the opening scene with Steve Middleton looking like Jeff Spicoli's little brother ala Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Kudos as well for the addition of actual music from the movie, I love me some DUH DUH DUH...DUH DUH!

2. Batman Vs. Gremlins

Fan-made? Yes. Awesome? Of course. Copyrighted? You betcha. The whole thing is great...but killing a Gremlin with the afterburner on the batmobile?! They should invent a word for that kind of awesome.

1. Star Wars Episode VII: The Young Jedi

It's unfair to say this film is terrible, but it's only because I feel bad saying that to a child in a Jedi suit. For what it's worth, this is probably the best production value and costume design you'll see out of all the fan-made films so far. And if I'm not mistaken, you'll recognize this guy and his son from Star Wars Uncut. If you are interested in seeing this entire film, it's available here!

Marc Webb Discusses THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and New Trailer

The latest trailer Sony Pictures released for The Amazing Spider-Man ended up being pretty damn incredible, and it got a lot of people excited about the movie. I was already excited about the movie, but it looks like a lot of people who were on the fence were sold on the trailer's awesomeness.

THR talked to the director of the film Marc Webb about the film, the new trailer, The Lizard, and how this movie will be different from Sam Raimi's version.

Webb realizes that its going to be hard to win over the fans of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, but it looks like he changed things up enough that this new vision of the superhero will be its own beast.

People don’t know what to expect, and I think it’s really important for us to establish exactly why we believe it’s an important thing to do

On cutting the last trailer we saw, what they were going for and what they wanted us to see:

We felt it was really important to give the audience a more specific idea of what the film would look like. When you do a teaser trailer it’s always tricky, because we were still shooting the movie when that was being cut.

This time we wanted to show Peter and Gwen a little bit more. To get to know more of the characterization, and a lot of the visual effects stuff that we’ve been working on, just to display the attitude of the film that we’re trying to create.

His focuses on in reinventing the franchise:

The film features significant differences from its predecessors in terms of its narrative, and finally develops the story of Dr. Curt Connors, who appeared in the previous Spider-Man films (played by Dylan Baker) but never transformed into his monstrous alter ego, The Lizard. “There’s narrative differences, like the Gwen Stacy saga is something from the comics that I’ve always really, really loved. There’s what happened to his parents, which is a huge thing. But there’s the villain, Dr. Connors and The Lizard, which never came to fruition in the movies.”

Here he talks about The Lizard:

We spent a lot of time thinking about the biology of a lizard, and how his muscles work, and there’s an entire staff of people dedicated to making him look lifelike. It is an extraordinary task, and very, very difficult. It takes a lot of time, which a lot of people in this room can attest to.

On the tone of the film:

There’s tonal differences, which are a little difficult to express except for in trailer form, or in the film itself, because it’s more of a subjective term. But those are all things that we felt like deserved their day in the sun.

What are your thoughts on what Webb had to say about his vision of Spider-Man?

Mary Elizabeth Winstead Joins THE DARKNESS

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Thing, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) will star in a psychological thriller titled The Darkness. German filmmaker Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) will helm the film written by Megan Holley (Sunshine Cleaning). It is scheduled to begin shooting this summer in Europe.

The film centers around

[Winstead] as an American student looking after her tutor's two children in a remote English manor house. She soon comes to believe that she and the children are being haunted when their lives are threatened by mysterious events.

With a career comprised largely of horror films, Winstead is a natural fit in this new film. What do you think? Will you go see the film or shun The Darkness?

George Lucas Claims Han NEVER Shot First in Star Wars

$

George Lucas has finally come out and addressed the controversial "Han Shot First" Star Wars issue, only he claims that Han NEVER shot first. That's right, apparently in the original cut of the Star Wars film, which has since been changed, Greedo shot at Han first. Apparently the scene just wasn't clear to audiences over all these years so he had to go in a make it clear, and make us understand that Han Solo is not a cold-blooded killer.

The fact of the matter is Han did shoot first! Lucas obviously hasn't watched the scene in question in a very long time because it's quite clear to me who actually shot first. But just to humor you here's how Lucas recently explained it in an interview with THR:

The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo [who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original] to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn’t. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.

This is the most direct answer to this epic Star Wars question that Lucas has ever given. The question I have for you is... do you believe him? Do you believe that Greedo shot first like he claims? Or like me are you steadfast in your belief that Han killed Greedo's ass in cold blood?

To help you decide you can watch the un-changed version of the scene and the changed version of the scene to compare.

Geek Casting: Haley Joel Osment and ROME's James Purefoy Land Roles

Two bits of geek casting news have popped up today. Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) has been cast in I’ll Follow You Down, according to DeadlineRichie Mehta (Amal) wrote and directed the film, which follows "a scientist who mysteriously disappears after a business trip, only to have his son Erol (Osment), make an eerie discovery about his whereabouts, several years later."

Mehta was nominated for 6 Genie Awards for Amal in 2009, including Best Film, Direction, and Screenplay. The sci-fi film will be produced by  Lee Kim under his Resolute Films and Entertainment banner, with filming slated for May in Toronto, Canada. The screenplay was developed with financial support from Telefilm Canada and the Harold Greenberg Fund. Here is what Kim had to say about the project:

Richie has penned a script that tells an emotionally charged, thrilling story while staying true to the sci-fi genre. Our main challenge was to find the right actor to play the lead role of Erol – one that requires the perfect balance of innocence, honesty and intelligence; Haley provides just that.

Rome's James Purefoy is set to star opposite Kevin Bacon in the upcoming Fox TV pilot from Kevin Williamson. Deadline reports that Purefoy has joined the untitled project from Warner Bros TV and Williamson’s Outerbanks Entertainment. The pilot is described "as an edge-of-the-seat thriller about Joe Carroll (Purefoy) a diabolical serial killer who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers, and a retired FBI profiler (Bacon) who finds himself in the middle of it."

Marcos Siega is directing the pilot, which was written and executive produced by Williamson (Dawson’s Creek, Scream, and Vampire Diaries). There will only be 15 episodes a season instead of the standard 22 if it is picked up for series. Purefoy will next be seen in Disney's John Carter.

I have not seen Rome but heard Purefoy is great in it. Osment has grown up a lot from when he saw dead people. I am interested in seeing him on screen again. What are your thoughts on this geek casting news?

Alex Proyas' PARADISE LOST Movie Is Dead

According to Deadline, the Alex Proyas (The Crow) directed film Paradise Lost in which Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) was supposed to play Lucifer is dead. This news comes shortly after the film's production was delayed due to money issues. It was supposed to start shooting this summer, but that's obviously not going to happen.

The film was to be based on the epic 17th-century poem by John Milton and was supposed to be a epic-sized movie about good vs. evil.  It would tell the story of the war in heaven between archangels Michael and Lucifer, including the latter's role in Adam and Eve's fall from grace.

The movie would also have starred Benjamin Walker as the archangel Michael, Diego Boneta as Adam, and Camilla Belle would have taken on the role of Eve.

It's a shame that this movie fell apart. I'm a little disappointed because it could have been pretty freakin' incredible.

Disney has unleashed a new TV spot for John Carter, which is set to be released on March 9th, 2012. The Andrew Stanton-directed movie stars Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights, and I'm hoping the movie turns out better than it looks.

The rest of the films cast includes Lynn CollinsSamantha MortonMark StrongCiaran HindsDominic WestJames PurefoyDaryl SabaraPolly WalkerBryan CranstonThomas Hayden Church, and Willem Dafoe.

Here's the Synopsis:

From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

MAN OF STEEL's Henry Cavill Eyes Zwick's GREAT WALL

Henry Cavill is lining up his first role after playing Superman in Man of Steel. Variety reports that Cavill is in negotiations to star in The Great Wall for Legendary East. Edward Zwick (Glory, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond) is directing based on a script he penned with Marshall Herskovitz.

The concept was concocted by Legendary Pictures chairman Thomas Tull and Max Brooks. It focuses on "the mystery behind how China's Great Wall was constructed." Zwick, Herskovitz, Tull, and Legendary's Jon Jashni are producing with Atlas Entertainment's Alex Gartner and Chuck Roven. Great Wall will be a co-production of Legendary East and Huayi Brothers, which will distribute the pic in China. No U.S distribution has been announced.

Cavill looks good in the pictures I have seen from Man of Steel. Zwick is a great director, and I am interested to see this film. What are your thoughts?

Will Douglas Trumbull Reinvent Movies?

$
0
0

Who's Douglas Trumbull you ask? He's the guy who's looking to give James Cameron and Peter Jackson a run for their money in the race to change the way we watch movies. Trumbull is a pioneer in special effects, having worked on films such as 2001: A Space OdysseyClose Encounters of the Third KindStar Trek: The Motion Picture, and Blade Runner. He's now going attempt to change the movie going experience for everyone on his own dime, without the help of the Hollywood machine.

Trumbull is currently working on an epic film project that he says will “reinvent the movies.” The story for the film is set 200 years in the future, and it explores man's place in the universe. It's described as a “first person cinema reality which is indistinguishable from reality.” He goes on to say that it's "way beyond anything that Peter Jackson and Jim Cameron have been doing or are thinking of.”

I say bring it on! I want to see this movie; I want to see what he has planned that will blow our minds, because that's what he's looking to do. Wait until you read what he is planning. If he succeeds this could be incredibly epic. I hope he completes this because I want to experience it!

Here's what he had to say in a great in depth interview with THR:

I left LA in 1987 because of the Natalie Wood disaster; I was frightened for my own life, I was standing between MGM management and a $50 million fraudulent insurance claim. It was a very, very messy situation, and it was the worst personal, professional experience anybody should ever have to go through to get that movie done. And when I got it done, I said, if this is what making movies in Hollywood is like, I’m going to go do something else. I had to consciously decide to put my directing career on hold and go do something else. I did things like the Back to the Future ride and theme parks and expos and took IMAX public and things like that, which I think have been a big boon to the movie business. But I haven’t been on the playing field as a film director, and so nobody from Hollywood calls me to direct their movies. I’m not on anybody’s A-list to do that. I’m not on anybody’s list to want to see the future of cinema, because I feel I have to do it myself. I can talk until I’m blue in the face, but I have to show them what it is.

Here's where things get really interesting....

And so I’m developing my own film, well, several films, but one of these films is going to go into this new territory I’m talking about – which is first person cinema reality which is indistinguishable from reality. The screen is going to be so big it’s like a window into another world. I’m going way beyond anything that Peter Jackson and Jim Cameron have been doing or are thinking of, and I don’t expect to get traction from investors until I can show what it is. Because no one’s ever seen it before, and no one can imagine what it would be like. But I can, and I know, and so I’m comfortable with personally making the investment. I have my own studio, I work in the Berkshires, I have my own stage, my own cameras, my own lights, my own editing, my own workshop, my machine shop, and I’m trying to reinvent the movies – with no help whatsoever from Hollywood. But very good, supportive help from projector manufacturers and camera manufacturers, who are completely open to anything that’s going to invigorate their business. So I am getting support on the technical side, but I’m not getting any support on the production side – and I hope that will come.

He then goes on to explain in a bit more detail what his movie is actually about...

I can only say that it’s a 200-years-in-the-future science fiction space epic that’s going to address very big, lofty issues, like man’s place in the universe, and how our contact with an extraterrestrial civilizations that are so mind-bogglingly in advance of our own that it will go into some of the same territory that 2001 went into, and it’s going to do it in a very plausibly scientific way, not a fanciful way. There are no alien monsters, and the earth is not being attacked by anybody. It’s going to be a much more intelligent, what we call hard-science fiction, and I think there’s absolutely nothing out there like this. I think the studios believe that they have to dumb everything down and the audience is not scientific, not up for anything truly intelligent, but I think just the opposite. I think we’re in the most technologically advanced society of all time, and people can go with that immediately. Most people you poll would believe that there’s life in the universe, for sure, and the Kepler project and another project are showing that the likelihood of inhabitable planets in our galaxy alone is going to be in the billions, and so the whole plausibility of contact with extraterrestrial civilizations is becoming very real scientifically, very plausible. Talk to any scientist and they’ll say, absolutely, yes. But Hollywood is still in the monster phase, it’s in the b-movie monster phase. And I’m not saying how it should be, I’m just saying what I would like to do, and I’d like to make something more intelligent that I can really be proud of.

It's good to see someone out there that shares the same belief in audiences that I do. I believe the audience is not stupid, and I want to see a film that is both intellectually stimulating and exciting as hell! What Trumbull is developing could be it. I'm incredibly interested in what he has planned and I truly hope that he can pull it off.

What are your thoughts on what Trumbull is doing? Do you think he will succeed? Do you want him to succeed?

Here is the trailer for The Aggression Scale, thanks to Heat Vision. Steven C. Miller directed this genre film, which will have a world premiere at SXSW as part of the Midnighters program. The pic is described as a being "in the spirit of the 1980s canon and in the vein of A History of Violence but with the teens as the heroes, taking on four hitmen over $500,000 in stolen cash."

The cast includes Fabianne Therese (John Dies at the End), Ryan Hartwig (The Thompsons), Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), Jacob Reynolds (Gummo), Joseph McKelheer (The Hamiltons), and Ray Wise (Twin Peaks).

Miller directed this film based on a script by Ben Powell. I loved A History of Violence and like the fact that this has two people from Twin Peaks. The song used in the trailer makes sets the tone for a cool looking film. Watch the trailer below, and share your thoughts.

The end of the world is coming in three weeks, and everything you've come to know and love will be obliterated... what do you do with the time you are given? This question is explored in a new romantic comedy from Focus Features called Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World. The story follows Steve Carell and Keira Knightley as they go out looking for love and family before the end of the world. It was written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, the woman behind the script for Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, which I thought was a great film.

The film also stars Adam Brody (The OC), Connie Britton (American Horror Story),  Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Derek Luke (Antoine Fisher), Melanie Lynskey (Away We Go), T.J. Miller (Cloverfield), and Patton Oswalt (Big Fan).

Here's the Synopsis:

Set in a too-near future, a man searches for a meaningful connection as humanity’s last days are at hand. Can he find his greatest love at the worst possible time? As the respective journeys of Dodge and Penny converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks – if not the world’s – brighten.

The movie is set to hit theaters on June 22nd, 2012. Check out the trailer below, and tell us what you think!

Michael Showalter has says that the long-awaited sequel to Wet Hot American Summer is moving forward. Huffington Post shared a video from Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, where Showalter confirmed the sequel by saying:

Absolutely yes. One hundred percent yes. The whole gang. Everyone's back. We're doing it.

The film has become a cult classic since its release in 2001. A sequel has been on our radar since last summer, when cast members Christopher Meloni, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Janeane Garofalo, and David Hyde Pierce said they would love to do a sequel during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

The movie had a great cast, and it will be cool to see them all back together if it actually happens. Watch the video below, and share your thoughts.
