DIABLO III: REAPER OF SOULS - Cinematic and Gameplay Trailers

0

At Gamescon 2013, Blizzard has officially announced their expansion to Diablo III, called Reaper of Souls. Accompanying the announcement is a cinematic trailer to introduce the game, as well as a gameplay trailer to show off the new class, enemies, and environments.

This cinematic, like all of Blizzard's, is staggeringly gorgeous. It picks up where the original game left off--the imprisonment of Diablo in the black soulstone. The council of archangels (in their oh-so-infinite wisdom), decide to just...you know...hide it somewhere. It apparently cannot be destroyed, and it's too evil to put into storage in heaven, so they just take it somewhere and hide it. This plan, not surprisingly, fails spectacularly. Not moments after Tyrael places the soulstone into his super secret chamber, Malthael, the archangel of Wisdom and apparently Death now, shows up and steals it after killing everything (in an absolutely beautifully rendered way).

Also released was this gameplay teaser. We get to see the new class, the Crusader, in action as he battles through hordes of Malthael's undead armies. He's obviously the spiritual successor of Diablo II's Paladin, using holy attacks and protective auras.

The expansion will contain, well, what you might expect it to. A new Act with a new story, new environments, and new enemies. All of the existing classes will get some new skills and abilities. Blizzard will also be retooling some core aspects of the game, especially regarding loot. They'll change the distribution so that item drops will be fewer but more powerful, including more creative legendary items. The previously scrapped Mystic artisan will be returning to help customize your character and loot. The level cap will be raised from 60 to 70, and the Paragon system will make character customization more rewarding.

Notably, a lot of these changes reflect what fans have been asking for since the game's release, so it looks like Blizzard has been figuring out how to implement these fan suggestions.

The expansion does not yet have a release date, but look for it next year. Until then, you can get excited about Diablo III's console release this September.

Neill Blomkamp's CHAPPIE Gets a 2015 Release Date

Sony Pictures has set a release date for Neill Blomkamp's project, Chappie, and that date is March 27th, 2015.

The film is a sci-fi comedy inspired by Blomkamp's short film "Tetra Vaal," and it tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.

The movie stars Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium) as well as Die Antwoord rap-rave duo Ninja and Yolandi Visser

I'm a fan of Blomkamp's work; I even enjoyed Elysium, even though it could have been better. I'm looking forward to what becomes of Chappie.

Joss Whedon Discusses Ultron in AVENGERS Sequel

Fans blew up with excitement when Joss Whedon announced at at Comic-Con that the title of the Avengers sequel would be Avengers: Age of Ultron. The movie may not follow the comic series that the title comes from, but Ultron is still going to be a badass character in the film.

In a recent interview with EW, Whedon talks about the self-aware robot, and what we can expect to see from him in the film. For those of you not really familiar with Ultron, some of his abilities include super-human strength, speed, stamina, durability, flight, mind control, a coma ray, and of course, genius intellect. Here's what the director had to say,

"I knew right away what I wanted to do with him. He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it. He’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because, at some point, everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone who’s a witch.
As a character I love [Ultron], because he’s so pissed off.”

It's going to be so awesome to see what Whedon does with this thing! The project is gearing up for production, and the plan is to start shooting in February of 2014. The movie will eventually be released on May 1st, 2015.

Director Terry Gilliam sure does have a crazy, twisted, and beautiful imagination. There's no doubt he's going to show it all off in his next film project The Zero Theorem, which stars Christoph WaltzTilda Swinton, Matt Damon, David Thewlis, Ben Whishaw, and a few others. We have a great new poster for you today, along with a statement from the director, which you can read below.

"When I made Brazil in 1984, I was trying to paint a picture of the world I thought we were living in then. The Zero Theorem is a glimpse of the world I think we are living in now. Pat Rushin’s script intrigued me with the many existential ideas he had incorporated into his funny, philosophic, and touching tale. For example: What gives meaning to our lives, brings us happiness? Can we ever be alone in our increasingly connected and constricted world? Is that world under control or simply chaotic? We’ve tried to make a film that is honest, funny, beautiful, and surprising; a simple film about a complex modern man waiting for a call to give meaning to his life; about inescapable relationships and the longing for love, full of quirky characters and sparkling performances; raising questions without offering obvious answers. Hopefully, it’s unlike any film you have seen recently; no zombies, no caped crusaders or alien spacecraft. Actually, I might have lied about that last item. Having not worked with a budget this small for several decades, I was forced to work fast and instinctively, pressured only by time and money. We relied on the freedom to spin on a dime, to make outrageous creative leaps. The results surprised even me. I’m proud to have been part of The Zero Theorem."

The movie is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival. I enjoy Gilliam's filmmaking style, and I'm looking forward to this one! Here's the synopsis:

Living in an Orwellian corporate world where “mancams” serve as the eyes of a shadowy figure known only as Management, Leth (Waltz) works on a solution to the strange theorem while living as a virtual cloistered monk in his home—the shattered interior of a fire-damaged chapel. His isolation and work are interrupted now and then by surprise visits from Bainsley, a flamboyantly lusty love interest who tempts him with “tantric biotelemetric interfacing” (virtual sex) and Bob. Latter is the rebellious whiz-kid teenage son of Management who, with a combination of insult-comedy and an evolving true friendship, spurs on Qohen’s efforts at solving the theorem. But these visits turn out to be intentional diversions orchestrated by Management to keep control of Qohen’s progress. Bob creates a virtual reality “inner-space” suit that will carry Qohen on an inward voyage, a close encounter with the hidden dimensions and truth of his own soul, wherein lie the answers both he and Management are seeking. The suit and supporting computer technology will perform an inventory of Qohen’s soul, either proving or disproving the Zero Theorem.

Sylvester Stallone in Talks for RAMBO TV Series

We could see Rambo on TV soon! Entertainment One has announced that they are teaming up with producer Avi Lerner (Rambo, The Expendables) and Nu Image to develop and produce a television series based on the classic action franchise. On top of that they are currently in negotiations with Sylvester Stallone to join the project. If he ends up joining, it will be on a creative level, but he could also potentially reprise his role as Rambo.

This could be an awesome series if they do it right and give it some decent production value. I can only imagine it would have to end up on a premium cable network with the amount of violence and blood it will probably contain. I could see it landing on a network like Starz.

Here's some more information on the TV series from the press release:

Rambo is a cult classic series of movies and an epic feature film character starring Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo. Based on the David Morell novel "First Blood," the film is about a troubled Vietnam War veteran and former Green Beret who is skilled in many aspects of survival, weaponry, hand to hand combat and guerrilla warfare. The series consists of the films First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo III and Rambo.
“We’re thrilled to join forces with a renowned producer like Avi and the Nu Image team. The ability to fuse the big screen and the small screen through Avi’s feature film expertise and eOne’s domestic production capabilities and international distribution infrastructure, makes for a highly complementary partnership,” said John Morayniss, CEO, eOne Television. “Rambo fans cover all demographics and we’re confident that we’ll quickly find this series a home.”
“I’m happy to be partnering with a prolific company like Entertainment One who has a track record of creating high quality programming for their broadcast partners around the world,” commented Lerner. “And I’m excited by the prospect of collaborating again with my good friend Sly for an encore in this next phase of the Rambo legacy.”
The television series will be produced by eOne in association with Lerner and Nu Image. Executive producers will include John Morayniss for eOne and Lerner for Nu Image, with eOne handling the worldwide rights to the series in all media.

Are you excited about seeing Rambo as a TV series?

BINDING OF ISAAC: REBIRTH Trailer Is Seriously Jacked Up

This newly released trailer for the Binding of Isaac remake is disturbingly haunting. It reminds me of that scene from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where they're going through the tunnel of hell and nightmares.

Rebirth, as the name suggests, is a remake of the original rogue-like dungeon crawler, developed by Edmund McMillen. It will cover all of the content from the original and expansion, as well as another expansion full of new content. The remake/expansion will include 2 new characters, over a hundred new items, and new floors. It will also feature local co-op and the ability to save a playthrough (the game is randomly generated) so you can challenge your friends.

The game is in good hands--instead of being made with Flash, it's being developed in a new engine by Nicalis, the company responsible for the wonderfully done Cave Story remake. Rebirth is being developed for Steam, PS4, and Vita, and according to Nicalis, they're also working on bringing it to Xbox and 3DS. The graphic style of the remake is going to be pixelated 16-bit, a humorous and ironic decision by McMillen.

The Binding of Isaac wiki keeps track of everything that's been announced about the remake so far. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is scheduled for a 2014 release.

Guy Ritchie to Direct 1930s Romance EMPIRE RISING

Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie is set to direct a great sounding new film for Warner Bros. called Empire Rising. It's a love story set in the 1930s around the construction of the Empire State Building.

The movie is an adaptation of the novel by Thomas Kelly, who will also be writing the script. The book was published back in 2006, and it told of "an epic love triangle set in 1930 just as construction on the iconic building begins and the Depression is beginning to take hold. On one side is the Irish immigrant Michael Briody, a steelworker on the building who is also running guns for the IRA. On the other is Johnny Farell, a bagman for Mayor Jimmy Walker and adapt at running the corrupt political system. And in the middle is a beautiful artist named Grace Masterson. Historical figures also make appearances."

Ritchie is the perfect director to take on this story. I love how he brought the past to life in his Sherlock Holmes films, and it will be great to see his vision of New York during the steel age. He's currently in pre-production on The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. I assume he'll start work on Empire Rising when he's finished with that.

Here's the official description from the book:

It is 1930, and ground has just been broken for the Empire State Building. One of the thousands of men who will come to work high above the city is Michael Briody, an Irish immigrant torn between his desire to make a new life in America and his pledge to gather money and arms for the Irish republican cause. When he meets Grace Masterson, an alluring artist who is depicting the great skyscraper's rise from her houseboat on the East River, Briody's life suddenly turns exhilarating--and dangerous--for Grace is also a paramour of Johnny Farrell, Mayor Jimmy Walker's liaison with Tammany Hall and the underworld.

Katee Sackhoff Wants to Play Harley Quinn - Yes, Please!

$

Harley Quinn is easily one of the most popular villains in the Batman universe, and for some reason we still have yet to see her up on the big screen.  She's so popular that I think she actually deserves her own film! Who knows when or if Warner Bros. will ever get around to bringing this character to life, but if they do they have the perfect actress who wants to take it on!

In a recent interview with Esquire, Battlestar Galactica and Riddick star Katee Sackhoff said that she wants play the character,

"I love Harley Quinn. I do. I just love it. It's not been done before. It's this fantastic mix. I mean, it's like the female Joker. Who wouldn't want to do that? Quite potentially — it's not around so I wouldn't feel the weight of it — I'd probably sell my first born at this point to do that."

So she obviously wants it bad! I think someone should at least get her to do a short film based on Harley Quinn to get the excitement brewing at the studio.

The next time we see Batman it will be in upcoming Man of Steel sequel, Batman Vs. Superman. It safe to say that Harley wont be a part of that, but maybe she'll be in the standalone Batman film that follows. I don't know, I just want to see a movie with Harley in it, because it could be amazing, especially with Sackhoff in the role!

Would you like to see Sackhoff play Harley?

Disney is in the process of developing another CG animated adventure that has yet to be announced, called Giants. Thanks to Bleeding Cool, we have some details on the new film that all you Disney fans might be interested in hearing.

First of all, the film will be an adaptation of Jack in the Beanstalk, kind of likeTangled is to Rapunzel and Frozen is to The Snow Queen. The movie is being directed by Nathan Greno (Tangled), and as you might expect, it's going to be in the same style and tone as Tangled and Frozen

The report goes on to talk about the film, and the similarities it has with Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer, but this sounds like it will be a much better adaptation of the story.

For one thing, they both have a hero called Jack, and Giants named for the Fee Fi Fo Fum rhymes. In this story, these names are abbreviations of Feebus, Fifen, Fogel and Fobert, a family of giants at the heart of the tale. There’s another brother too, Faustus, their leader. Like all good villains, he’s got a relatable point of view, he’s just not quite joining the dots correctly.
Also like Singer’s film, we see the introduction of a love interest from a class above Jack. In this case, Angelina isn’t royalty, but just from a merchant family, though her parents do see him as being “below” her.

They then go on to provide some Spoilerish story and character details about the film, saying,

The real money is manifest in Marco, born to nobility and the third corner of a love triangle with Jack and Angelina. He’s a good guy, though, and the only reason he and Jack can’t be fast friends from the off is that they’re both drawn to Angelina. And, yes, he’s called Marco because, like Polo, he wants to travel – and to open up trade routes.
The fourth human lead is Inma, a scrappy tomboy type – and something of a class warrior, I understand. She’s the one I’m rooting for in this story, the tireless fighter against injustice, taken less seriously because she happens to be a pre-teen girl. Of course, there is that story about David and Goliath
But, okay, it’s not the humans that get the title billing here. It’s the giants. The Storm Giants. Huge, thunderous figures.
In this story, the Storm Giants have made a pact with the humans. If the humans work for them and give them a percentage of their harvest and livestock, they’ll return the favour by keeping danger and threats at bay. At first, it must have been appealing to have a Giant agree to fight your corner, but the people aren’t getting enough for themselves now. Faustus’ name is seeming to be a touch ironic.
And this is where we find ourselves at the beginning. As you might expect, there’s then a journey up to where the Giants live and some terrible conflict between the humans and the Storm Giants. There’s a lot of sneaking about and gruesome recipes and all that good stuff you’re used to from fairy tales about ogres and their ilk.
But what you may not expect is how Jack ends up befriending one of the Storm Giants – and this is what sews the beans, if you will, for the adventure, and the big changes it brings about.

Disney always seems to deliver great animated films, and Giants is one one of several unannounced projects that they are working on. I was never the biggest fan of the story of Jack in the Beanstalk, but it sounds like they will turn it into a fun adventure. Tangled was really good, and Frozen looks great, so hopefully they just continue to pump one great animated film out after another.

Ubisoft has released an incredibly awesome live-action trailer promoting their upcoming video game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. This trailer is pretty amazing, and it gives us a glimpse of what a live-action movie could look like. What I really loved about this trailer, besides the beautiful detail that was included, was that it does a great job of conveying the atmosphere of the game even though it is live action. You'll see what I mean when you watch it, so check it out!

The 21st Century Problem with MAN OF STEEL's Ending

For those who follow the site, you know I was an avid defender of Man Of Steel  upon its release. Loved the film, love the new franchise minus one huge oversight on the writer's end. No way, no how in today's society does a man without a college education step into a newsroom and just "get" a job. This isn't snobbery, or elitism--the industry is dying. Why would they hire some Joe Schmoe who spent the last few years "soul searching" at ONE OF THE MOST REPUTABLE NEWS SOURCES IN THE COMIC BOOK WORLD? Seriously, it'd be like you submitting a resume to The New York Times when you've never written an article. They wouldn't even make it past the first sentence of the cover letter, let alone offer you a job!

Anyway, below is the letter which Supes should have received in place of a new job opportunity.

Trailer for FRIGHT NIGHT 2: NEW BLOOD Sexified Vampire Movie

"Welcome to Fright Night for real!"

I thought director Craig Gillespie‘s remake of Fright Night was fantastic. I really enjoyed it, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. FOX decided to make a sequel to it, but this one is going straight to Blu-ray and DVD, and it looks like the level of quality that you would see for those kinds of films. In fact, the movie just looks like a remake of Gillespie's 2011 film, only not as good. This time around they decided to sex it up with a female villain vampire that bathes in blood.  Here's the synopsis for Fright Night 2: New Blood:

By day Gerri Dandridge (Jaime Murray) is a sexy professor, but by night she transforms into a real-life vampire with an unquenchable thirst for human blood. So when a group of high school students travel abroad to study in Romania, they find themselves ensnared in Gerri's chilling web of lust and terror. Charley and "Evil" Ed must stop Gerri from drinking and bathing in the blood of a "new moon virgin," which just so happens to be Charley's ex-girlfriend, Amy. They enlist help from Peter Vincent, the vampire hunting host of a reality show called "Fright Night," to drive a stake through Gerri's plan and save Amy from a fate far worse than death.

The movie stars Will Payne as Charley, Sacha Parkinson, Chris Waller, and
Sean Power play the characters Amy, Ed, and Peter Vincent. It was directed by Eduardo Rodriguez, and it  hits DVD and Blu-ray October 1st.

PS4 Pre-orders Eclipse PS3, PS2

$

0

In an interview with VideoGamer.com, the Chief of Sony UK, Fergal Gara, has confirmed that the PS4 has over one million pre-orders, which puts its pre-order numbers above that of both the PS3 and PS2. Gara would not disclose the exact number of pre-orders, but says that Sony is very pleased with the number and they expect to sell out at launch.

I think comparing the PS4 to the PlayStation 2 is a dangerous thing to do at this stage of the game. The PS2 is the bestselling video game console of all time, clocking in at 155 million units shipped to date. Not only has the PS2 been on the market for 13 years, it also has one of the greatest software collections. If Sony is expecting for the PS4 to oust the PS2 as bestselling console I fear they may be disappointed.

No doubt the PS4 will be a successful, lucrative product for Sony but the gaming industry at large has developed this habit of forming almost absurd sales estimates for their products, like Square Enix with Tomb Raider. Square Enix projected that Tomb Raider would sell 5 to 6 million copies, so even though they sold more than one million copies in 48 hours and current sales numbers are measured at 3.4 million, Square considers it a failure. Many game publishers would be tickled pink by these numbers, but since the estimates were so high, the game was a disappointment.

Sony, please don’t fall into this trap. There is nothing wrong with setting conservative numbers and then being pleasantly surprised.

Bradley Cooper Offered Rocket Raccoon Role in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

It looks like Marvel has found their Rocket Raccoon for Guardians of the Galaxy! This is one of my favorite characters in the comics, and he's going to be a scene stealer in the film, so I've been excitedly waiting to see who Marvel and director James Gunn wanted in the role.

According to our friends at Latino-Review, Marvel has offered Bradley Cooper the part, so it's his for the talking if he wants it. It was previously rumored that Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey were up for the part, but in all honesty I think Cooper is a great choice to voice this feisty, gun-blasting rodent of violence and destruction. I assume that this is the "dream guy" that Gunn talked about in a previous interview.

Gunn previously described the character as being the heart of the film. He also described his vision for him saying,

It’s about creating a character that’s a little animal that’s taken and experimented on, pulled apart and put back together again and implanted with cybernetics. He’s half machine and half raccoon and he’s a little gnarled, miserable pretty angry creature because there’s nothing else like him and that’s not easy to be.

Cooper may be a busy guy these days, but it should be easy enough for him to squeeze in a few days of voice work for the film. I hope Cooper takes it, but what do you think about the casting decision?

If Cooper does take the part, he’ll join Chris Pratt as Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Groot, John C. ReillyGlenn CloseKaren GillanMichael RookerOphelia LovibondDjimon HounsouLee Pace, and Benicio Del Toro.

First Teaser Trailer for Paul W.S. Anderson's POMPEII with Kit Harington

As you can see, Kit Harington has shed his Game of Thrones furs and armor for a skin baring gladiator outfit in Paul W.S. Anderson's Pompeii. I give him props, he almost looks as good as me... almost. The first teaser trailer for the film has been released, and it looks like something you would expect to see from the director. There are some cool visuals, but let's just wait and see how the story plays out.

The film is was shot in 3D and the story leads up to the legendary eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Harington plays a character named Milo, who is a slave turned gladiator. He eventually falls head-over-heels in love with a beautiful upper-class woman named Cassia played by Emily Browning. It's basically Titanic, but the story centers around a volcanic eruption instead of a giant boat sinking. Harington talks bout the photo above in a interview with EW in which he says,

"This is the first scene you see me in. It’s set in London, in fact, and it’s a scene where my character is a gladiator fighting in an arena. That’s his gladiator look. It’s a great little fight against three masked gladiators and sets up who he is and where he’s going. You see me display my skills quite early on."

He goes on to talk about his character a little more, saying,

“Milo is a Celt who is enslaved when he is a child and his family is killed. There’s a time cut that happens in the movie where you see me go from a child to a man, and you realize he’s been a gladiator for a long time. Eventually he’s taken to Pompeii... There are some beautiful scenes in there.
He’s a good swordsman and good fighter, and quite brooding, which is all of what Jon Snow is, and he doesn’t really speak a hell of a lot, even though I’ve got a lot of screen time. He kind of keeps himself to himself.
He’s an angry, angry man who doesn’t care what he does. For a large part of the film, he’s driven by pure rage.”

The ensemble cast also includes Jared Harris, who plays Cassia’s father Lucretius, Keifer Sutherland as a visiting Roman Senator, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Paz Vega.

I'm not really a big fan of Anderson's film work, so I'm not expecting anything special to come from this one. Pompeii is set to hit theaters on February 21st, 2014.

The Expendables 3 is currently in production, and it looks like they're already deep into filming some action sequences. Here are a couple new photos from the set featuring our first look at Jason Statham and Dolph Lungren, who looks like he wants to kill the photographer taking his picture. We also have a photo of Mel Gibson looking ripped for his role in the film. You'll find another photo below of a firefight being filmed.

The confirmed cast for the film also includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Wesley Snipes, Victor Ortiz, Glen Powell, Antonio Banderas, and Mel Gibson. This movie is being directed by Patrick Hughes, and I'm sure it will be just as ridiculous and action-packed as the first movie. I can't wait! Here's the synopsis:

In THE EXPENDABLES 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables -- but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The movie will arrive in theaters on August 15th, 2014.

Inspiring Trailer for the WWII Drama THE BOOK THIEF

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for an inspiring looking World War II drama called The Book Thief. It stars Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson, and Sophie Nélisse, and here's the synopsis,

While subjected to the horrors of WWII Germany, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. Under the stairs in her home, a Jewish refuge is being sheltered by her adoptive parents.

The trailer is really good until there's a voiceover narration that kind of pulls you out of it. Regardless of that, the movie looks great. I'm a big fan of these historically set films, and this is one I'll definitely watch.

The movie opens up on November 15th, 2013.
