The Humble Origin "Get EA Games Without Paying EA" Bundle

$

It looks like people still want to buy Electronic Arts’ games, just not from EA. A few days ago, EA partnered with Humble Bundle to create the Humble Origin Bundle which offers 8 games, including the recently released Dead Space 3, for a minimum of $1. In addition, all of EA’s cut goes to charities, such as the Human Rights Campaign and the American Cancer Society. Within two days, over a million of these bundles had been sold, raking in over $5 million. The load on the Origin server, EA’s wretched digital distribution system, was so great that the code redemption servers went down, and as a result, the only way to play most of the games you purchased as part of the bundle was on Origin’s competitor, Steam.

These sales numbers are completely unprecedented, even for the Humble Bundle, which has had some high profile partners in the past, like Deep Silver. To put these numbers in perspective, Dead Space 3 sold 605,000 copies in its entire first month of release. In just two days, more people bought Dead Space 3 than in the entire month of February. I’m sure the price, $1 or more versus a premium $60, is a huge factor but how many of these sales are driven by the fact that EA isn't receiving a dime?

EA has received quite a bit of flak over the last couple of years. After winning the worst company of the year award--twice--many gamers vocally swore off of EA products, and I bet this group has used this Humble Bundle as an opportunity to pick up some high profile releases they may have missed. I personally know two people who have said as much. What do you think? Have people been avoiding EA games because they don't want to support the company?

Hilariously Wacky Animated Short - SLEEPY BETTY

I've got a beautifully animated and hilariously crazy short film for you to watch today called "Sleeping Betty." The art style is amazing, and it was done in India Ink so it has a very cool, unique look. The short is incredibly playful, and the random wackiness makes if very entertaining. I'd have to say it's one of my favorites.

Princess Betty sleeps in a narcoleptic stupor. The king appeals to his subjects to wake her. A worthy Prince Charles lookalike has to leave his royal suburb to save the princess, but will Betty be wakened with just a kiss?

The short was directed by Claude Cloutier, and I hope you enjoy it!

This Cinematic Trailer for DEAD RISING 3 Is Badass!

I love zombie video games, and the Dead Rising franchise has always been fun. It's not my favorite, but they've still managed to entertain me! Microsoft studios has released an awesome new trailer for their next game in the series, Dead Rising 3! This thing is badass, and I hope this third one ends up being the best in the franchise! This trailer has definitely sold me on it. Here's the synopsis:

Set 10 years after the events of Fortune City in Dead Rising 2, players are introduced to Nick Ramos, a young mechanic with a strange tattoo and a mysterious past, who must find a way to escape a city full of zombies before an impending military strike wipes the city of Los Perdidos, California, and everyone in it, off the map. Nick can't do it alone – he must join up with other survivors to stay alive. They must fight their way out before it's too late.

The game will be released exclusively on the XBox One in November of 2013.

FANTASTIC FOUR and X-FORCE to Share Film Universe with X-MEN

It looks like FOX is going to go the Marvel route and combine their mutant properties into their own cinematic universe! As you know, they are currently developing new Fantastic Four and X-Force movies, and it looks like both of those will exist in the same movie universe.

While talking to SFX, comic writer and Marvel Fox movie consultant Mark Millar had this to say when asked about Fantastic Four,

"Without question I think you have to see some of these guys showing up in each other's movies. I think the most exciting thing in superhero movies, until The Avengers came along, was when Nick Fury showed up in 'Iron Man.' Even though it was a guy with an eye patch it was really cool—and I expect we will see more of that."

Then in a separate interview with Den of Geek, Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow was asked about X-Force and it's place in the X-Men universe, and this was his reply...

"Oooh, let's see, what can I say? Let me put it like this. It will seamlessly exist in the X-Men cinematic universe, but it's not a sequel."

So there it is! Fox is building up their own cinematic Marvel universe. Hopefully they can pull it off successfully. I'd love to see a shared universe with all of these mutant characters. There's a lot of potential there and it could be really cool. I just wish the studios could work together on combining forces so that they could crossover into each other's movies.

INFINITY #1 Review - An Event With a Spark

Writer: Jonathan Hickman

Art: Jim Cheung

Events can be draining, and it seems this has even occurred to Jonathan Hickman, as on pg. 48 Tony Stark makes a comment along the lines of, "I'm getting tired of End of the World scenarios." Stark's not the only one who feels that way, as in every comic store I'm in a constant topic of discussion is event fatigue and the endless cycle of Event - Aftermath - setup for next event - rinse, lather, repeat. Of course these titles sell by the truckloads, so it's not hard to see why Marvel and DC continue to base their yearly plans around them (several of them in fact), but they are becoming difficult to tell apart, and it takes a talented team to make one event stand out from all the others.

Enter Infinity #1 from the team of Hickman and Jim Cheung. For the Abnett - Lanning faithful, you can still see some of those building blocks they laid during their Marvel Cosmic run, (it's small, but at least it's something) and for those who have been following Avengers, Hickman has made that book a seamless transition to the events of Infinity #1. Hickman builds multiple layers into his stories, at least from my experience with his writing, so it wasn't until my second read-through of Infinity that I really appreciated some of the little intricacies.

Let's start with the crew finally giving Thanos a threatening aura again. When he was brought back in the Thanos Imperative, the team had to break him down a bit in the process, and while he's appeared in the universe since then it wasn't until Infinity that he finally seems like the Thanos everyone loves to hate. Its nice to see Hickman flesh out some of the behind the scenes-type work that keeps Thanos and his armies in power, and ultimately his empire works a lot like the mob, just substitute planets for cities and take a bottle of purple spray paint to Al Capone and you get the idea. Part of why that is so well conveyed in this book can be attributed to the wonderful art of Jim Cheung, who draws an unbelievably intimidating Thanos. While we're on the subject, he also draws an awesome everything else. I've enjoyed his work immensely, especially his Young Avengers stints, and its nice to see him getting more mainstream shine on a book of this scale.

Hickman has brought in some pretty complicated concepts to Infinity, including The Builders, Ex Nihilo and Abyss, The Inhumans, Captain Universe, several other worlds, Evil Grimace and his cronies, etc, etc, and somehow makes them comprehensible. Also, props for finally making Black Bolt not seem like a gigantic punk (check pg 42 for that wonderful moment).

So far the events of this year haven't managed to keep my interest. Age of Ultron, while promising early on, lost me midway, and events like Wrath of the First Lantern and Trinity War never could hook me in the first place, but if Infinity keeps up to the bar set by its initial issue, I might finally be adding another trade to my bookshelf when all is said and done.

Comingsoon

It looks like production has officially started on Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables 3, and the first photos from the set have leaked out to prove it. They feature Stallone coming into work for the day and a guy playing around with a big gun.

So far, the confirmed cast for the film includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Jason Statham, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Wesley Snipes, Victor Ortiz, Glen Powell, Antonio Banderas, and Mel Gibson. This movie is being directed by Patrick Hughes, and I'm sure it will be just as ridiculous and action-packed as the first movie. I can't wait! Here's the synopsis:

In THE EXPENDABLES 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables -- but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

It will arrive in theaters on August 15th, 2014. Stay tuned for more official casting updates!

Timur Bekmambetov to Direct BEN-HUR Reboot?

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter director Timur Bekmambetov is apparently in negotiations with MGM to remake Ben-Hur for the studio. It will be a new adaptation of the 1880 Lew Wallace novel Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ. Bekmambetov is a fun director, but It's hard to imagine him doing a movie like Ben-Hur because all of the other films that he has made have this cheesy, slightly low-quality kind of feel to them. A movie like Ben-Hur needs to be epic in every way. According to Deadline,

This film will tell the formative story of the characters as they grew up best friends before the Roman Empire took control of Jerusalem. Judah Ben-Hur was a Jewish prince and Messala the son of a Roman tax collector. After the latter leaves to be educated in Rome for five years, the young man returns with a different attitude. Messala mocks Judah and his religion and when a procession passes by Judah’s house and a roof tile accidentally falls and hits the governor, Messala betrays his childhood friend and manipulates it so that Judah is sold into slavery and certain death on a Roman warship, with his mother and sister thrown in prison for life. Judah doesn’t die, and vows revenge on Messala which, like in the films, culminates in the famed chariot races. There is another way the script differs from the movie, in that it will tell the parallel tale of Jesus Christ, with whom Ben-Hur has several encounters which moves him to become a believer in the Messiah, and which culminates in Christ being sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate. Intertwined in all this is the lifelong struggle between Ben-Hur and Messala.

I love the 1959 Charlton Heston movie, and I think a new big screen adaptation could be amazing with the right director. The deal isn't set in stone yet for Bekmambetov, but the studio obviously wants him for the job.

What do you think about the possibility of Bekmambetov taking on Ben-Hur?

Multiple eyes, glowing bodies, tricked out shells?! I have to say I really love what ChasingArtwork did to the TMNT crew in his conceptual "Turtle Tech" piece. Technically these turtles are "mechs" according to the art work, being powered by ooze filled reactors housed within their shells giving them super powers beyond that of the classic Ninja Turtles. Check out some more art work below, and be sure to check out the Deviant Art page for details and more pictures of mechanized superheroes!

SKYRIM: INTO THE VOID - Awesome Fan-Made Film

Check out this incredibly well-made fan film for the video game Skyrim, called Skyrim: Into the Void. The production quality of the short is actually really impressive, and it has a good amount of action. It was directed by Warialasky, and here's the synopsis:

Dovahkiin, the noble dragonborn hero, is cursed in a fight with a vampire. He spends a considerable time wandering the realm before being captured by the Dark Brotherhood, who offer him a deal. Dovahkiin agrees to help the Brotherhood save a captured member from the Necromancers, in exchange for a cure to his vampirism.

It's great for a fan-made film, and I thought it was really entertaining. I think fans of the game will enjoy it. Check it out and let us know what you think!

In anticipation of an "exciting reveal" for Batman: Arkham Origins later this week, Warner Bros. Games Montreal has released a few new screenshots from the game, three of which showcase the Batcave. Mind you, this is the first time the Wayne Manor Batcave has been featured in these Arkham games, and it looks just as cool as you would imagine in this universe.

Developed by Warner Bros. Games Montreal, Batman: Arkham Origins features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline occurring several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Taking place before the rise of Gotham City's most dangerous villains and assassins, the game showcases a young, raw, unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight. As the story unfolds, witness identities being formed and key relationships being forged.

The game will be available for the Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on October 25th, 2013.

New Batman Casting Rumors

The newest Man of Steel sequel movie rumor has surfaced, and we've got the scoop for you fellow bat-fans!

According to CosmicBookNews, Dark Knight trilogy director/writer Christopher Nolan has strongly recommended Wes Bentley as the Caped Crusader in the upcoming 2015 film. Nolan, who was a producer on Man of Steel, is directing Interstellar, a movie about space and presumably time travel, which stars Bentley.

Assuming that Nolan's recommendation is coming coming from working with him first hand, I have complete faith in Mr. Nolan. If he believes Bentley would be a great addition to the DC silver screen universe, I do as well. Plus, just Look at Bentley, he fits the role well. He's handsome enough to pull off Bruce Wayne, plus... HE HAS BLACK HAIR. Finally, a Bruce Wayne with black hair. My only fear is that maybe Bentley couldn't pull of the darker edgier side of Bruce. Could he stomp a thugs face into the pavement? Could he jump from building to building without missing a step? Could he yell "WHERE IS THE TRIGGER?!" extremely loud? I guess we'll just have to wait and find out.

As you've probably heard, Bioshock Infinite has some new DLC coming in the near future, and it details Booker and Elizabeth's trip to Rapture. So without further ado, take a look at his two pieces titled "Little Lamb" and "Her Song", and if you appreciate them as much as I do, give the rest of his gallery a look-see.

Filmofilia

For those of you who are interested in seeing more of Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic Noah, here are a few high resolution photos from the film and the set showing off several of the characters in the film. Aronofsky is a crazy talented director, and the fact this is Aronofsky's dream project tells me it's going to be one of his greatest creations. At least that's what I'm expecting!

The movie tells the epic biblical story of a prophet who is told by God to build a giant boat that can carry two of every animal from the earth to save them from a giant flood that will destroy every living thing on Earth so that they could have a new beginning. God flooded the world because of its wickedness.

The film has an incredible cast of actors as well that includes Russell CroweJennifer ConnellySaoirse RonanDouglas BoothLogan LermanEmma WatsonRay WinstoneAnthony HopkinsKevin Durand, and Mark Margolis. It comes out on March 28th, 2014.

Warner Bros. has released a couple of high resolution photos from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The one above might be new. I don't remember seeing it, but the one below isn't, it's just in a high resolution form now. Hopefully we get a new trailer soon! I want to see more!

This the second film in Peter Jackson's trilogy of Hobbit films, and it continues the adventures of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

The movie opens in 3D, 2D, and IMAX theaters on December 13th!

PREACHER Movie Update from Director DJ Caruso

$

Back in February, DJ Caruso was attached to direct a big screen adaptation of the comic book Preacher. Since then, there hasn't been much news on the project, but in a recent interview with I Am Rogue, Caruso revealed that he is still attached the project, and gave an update on where the project currently stands,

"I’m still attached to Preacher and we’re wrestling with Sony because I got another movie at Sony called Invertigo, which is a big action film we’re trying to get going this summer. So Preacher got put on the back burner, but we’re still involved with Preacher and hopefully we’ll have some good news on that soon. Todd August wrote a great script. I think it’s one of those features that has to kind of go through the studio system if it’s going to be made for a certain price. So we’re kind of revisiting a way to approach making the movie in the right way."

Preacher was created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon and tells the story of Texas reverend Jesse Custer who, after merging with the escaped offspring of a demon and an angel, find himself imbued with the word of God, the power to command anyone to do his bidding. Teamed with his ex girlfriend, Tulip O'Hare, and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, Custer sets out across America to track down the almighty and force him to explain why he abandoned creation.

The director then gave an update on the sequel to I Am Number Four. I didn't really care for that movie, it wasn't Caruso's best work. In fact, I think it's the worst movie he's made, and I'm not really that interested in seeing a sequel. But if you are, then here's what's going on with the it...

"It’s come up before because we did decent numbers here in the states, but we didn’t do great, but really internationally the movie did well and it has this huge following so I get that question a lot. The Power of Six, which is the second book and would feature Number Six a little bit more, we’ve talked about it, but nothing’s really jumpstarted. There’s been some talk in the past couple of months about trying to do something because there is this audience appetite out there and even on my Twitter account it’s crazy. Most of the people on Twitter that contact me from all over the world ask, “Where’s the next movie?” I think DreamWorks is getting those too so it’ll be interesting. I don’t know if I’d be involved, but I know they’re talking about it."

I'm looking forward to seeing how Preacher turns out when they actually get around to making it.
