Being the enormous Bat-fan that I am, i totally dig the idea of a rough and rugged street level Batman. I'd be almost willing to bet that this version of The Batman wouldn't carry around Bat-Shark Repellent! Just looking at this magnificent piece of art you can feel the grittiness oozing off of him, just look at the Bat-Tat on his left shoulder. If that doesn't scream "If you don't tell me what i want to know, I'm going to hyper extend your elbow... With your other elbow," I don't know what does!

STAR TREK U.S.S. Enterprise Spatula

"Boldly flip food like no food has flipped before."

How convenient, my spatula recently broke, and I need a new one! This Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise spatula will make for a perfect replacement!

While we can't hop on a ship and explore the galaxy with Kirk, Spock, and friends, we do a good amount of exploration in our kitchens. In the warm months, our CSA drops off a box of mystery vegetation every week. What do you do with a kohlrabi the size of a basketball? How many ways can you prepare cauliflower? What does one do with garlic scapes or squash blossoms? These are questions that excite us as culinary explorers.
And of course, no kitchen is complete without at least a couple spatulas, or as we sometimes call them, spatuhoozits. We're flipping pancakes or tater tots or burgers pretty much on a weekly basis, so why not have a bit of fun with it? The Star Trek USS Enterprise Spatula looks like a (slightly extended) version of our favorite starship. It's made of BPA-free silicone with a sturdy metal handle and silicone grip.

You can get the spatula at Think Geek, and it will cost you $25, which is kind of expensive by spatula standards, but not by Star Trek merchandise standards.

Impressive GAME OF THRONES Balloon Sculpture

Check out this crazy impressive Game of Thrones inspired balloon sculpture called "Hand of the King." It was created by Phileas Flash's Balloons who included the following note with the photos...

"Have you ever seen the Iron Throne? The barbs along the back, the ribbons of twisted steel, the jagged ends of swords and knives all tangled up and melted? It is not a comfortable seat ser. Aerys cut himself so often men took to calling him King Scab, and Maegor the Cruel was murdered in that chair. By that chair, to hear some tell it. It is not a seat where a man can rest as ease." Stannis Baratheon (A song of Fire and Ice by George RR Martin)
I had a vision a few weeks ago to make the Iron throne from Game of Thrones out of balloons. The most iconic image of that chair is of Ned Stark (the Hand of the King, played by Sean Bean), so here is my tribute to that amazing image.

It's amazing what talented people can do with balloons!

See How BACK TO THE FUTURE Old Age Make-up Compares to Actual Aging

In Back to the Future we got a look at what most of the 1955 characters look like in 1985 having aged 30 years. It's now been 30 years since the movie was made, and now you can see how good of a job the make-up artists did imagining actors Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover and Thomas Wilson as older versions of themselves. I also included a photo of Michael J. Fox showing his 30 year comparison photos (1985-2015). As you can see, they all aged a lot better than what they envisioned in 1985.  As good as the make up was, it's almost like they overaged them by 15 years or more.

No Animated STAR WARS or Traditionally Animated Film Coming from Disney

$

Disney's D23 Expo starts today and runs through the weekend, and we're going to be getting a lot of information from several of the films and series that they are developing. Some of those animated films include Frozen, Marvel's Big Hero 6, and Pixar'sThe Good Dinosaur, Inside/Out and the Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory. Then of course there will be stuff from Marvel and hopefully Star Wars.

In a recent interview with EW, Disney CCO John Lasseter  talked about the animation side of the studio. In it he says that there are no Star Wars animated movies being planned, and that there are no feature length traditional animated films in the works either. He also talks about Marvel's Big Hero 6, and answers a few other questions that you can check out below! Then above you'll find a new piece of production art for The Good Dinosaur.

Do you see any potential Star Wars or Lucas film-related projects for Disney’s animation branches?

Not really, other than Pixar has always used Skywalker Sound for all of our productions. They’re the best so we’ll always continue using them and we’re very good friends. And we always have been with [special effects house Industrial Light and Magic] as well. But other than being friends we have never needed to do anything with them. But we’re also massive Star Wars fans so we’re all very excited, as is everybody around the world, for new Star Wars films.

Big Hero 6 is Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first team-up with Marvel. What’s the nature of that collaboration?

It’s based upon a very short series of comic books and it’s six comic books. They’re out of the Marvel universe, but more of a Japanese manga style. We’re creating something based upon that so it’s really a Disney Animation production. A loose adaptation — like all adaptations are. They almost have to be.

And then there’s the direct-to-DVD market, which the previous version of Disneytoon Studios concentrated on. Is that still the main focus there?

Disneytoon Studios was started a number of years ago to feed into the direct-to-video market, but as the home video sales have continued to decrease rapidly we are looking at the evolution of the studio going more theatrical. With Disneytoon Studios we start from the beginning by thinking of it as a series in a world — it’s a continuation: the Tinkerbell films, and now with Planes, inspired from the world of Cars, but with airplane characters … You really have to spend time upfront to make sure the world is robust enough and interesting enough to be able to hold many different stories.
What’s the future of 2-D, hand-drawn animation at Disney?
We still are doing some … We’re still doing a lot of short films. There are no features on the docket for hand-drawn, but we’re definitely keeping hand drawn alive at the studio. Hand-drawn is finding it’s way in a very interesting way into the technology. There’s a lot of hand-drawing that goes into the computer animated movies at Walt Disney Animation Studios. There’s a different style to the animation from that studio, too.  Even though it’s computer animation in the end the way they do it, and the feeling it has, is more the feeling of hand-drawn animation. And then there’s a little bit of work going on with shorts such as Paperman, John Kahr’s film which won the Academy Award, and has this really interesting very innovative combination of hand-drawn and CG.

It's really kind of sad that traditionally animated films are completely dead. I'm a huge fan of those kinds of films. No matter what Lasseter says there's a certain charm and style that they have that you just can't replicate with CG animation.

New OLDBOY Photo - Josh Brolin Is Hammer Happy

Josh Brolin looks extremely pissed off in the new photo from Spike Lee's Oldboy remake. Word on the internet is the hammer fight scene in this film is going to be even more brutal than in the original film, and that Brolin did it himself with no stunt double.

It sounds intriguing, but but I've also been hearing recently that the movie as a whole is mediocre, which is what I think most of us expected. But who knows? maybe if our expectations for the film are at rock bottom, it will end up being better than we thought. I doubt it, but this guy seemed to enjoy it.

OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

The movie comes out on October 25th, 2013.

Disney Animation Announces ZOOTOPIA for 2016 - Concept Art

During Disney's Animation D23 Expo panel, John Lasseter announced a new project their animation team is working on called Zootopia. If you couldn't guess from the title the movie completely revolves around animals, and these animals live in a world where humans don't exist and have never existed.

The movie is being directed by Byron Howard (Tangled ) from a script by Jared Bush. To give you an idea of what this movie will entail, these guys were inspired by the classic Disney animated film Robin Hood. Howard wanted to make a movie with animals in clothing and he wanted to continue the legacy of Disney animal-based movies. Lasseter loved the idea so much he gave Howard a big ol' hug and told him he would support the film.

They've been working on the film now for about a year and a half, and it's described as a  “buddy action comedy set in a world where humans never existed.” Over that time, they had a team of people build an incredible world built by animals, and inspired by natural real world habitats. When developing Zootopia they asked themselves, "what would animals do differently than humans would?" To capture that world the filmmakers talked to animal experts, from anthropologists, safari guides, and imagineers.

They showed some great concept art and character designs for the film which looks great! There's no doubt this film is going to be very unique and different from anything done before.

The two main characters in the film are Nick Wilde, who is a fox, and Lt. Judy Hopps, a rabbit. They begin as natural enemies, but eventually become friends, and possibly more by the end of the story.  The conflict can be simplified down to “flat teeth vs sharp teeth.”

This looks like a really fun concept that should end up being another fantastically entertaining animated Disney film.

Marvel's BIG HERO 6 - D23 Panel and New Photo

Disney Animation showed off a little bit of their first fully animated Marvel film, Big Hero 6. This movie is going to be awesome! The story centers around a 14-year-old boy named Hiro and his robot. What's great about this robot is that it's a soft huggable inflatable robot called BayMax, with a small endoskeleton that walks like a penguin. The kid basically tricks it out with different kinds of really cool body armor that can do different things.

Hiro puts a team together that consists of GoGo Tomago, Honey Lemon, Wasabi-No Ginger, and Fred, known as Fredzilla in the comics. All of the powers that they have come from technical and mech upgrades invented by Hiro.

The movie looks unlike anything Disney has ever done before, and I love it! Big Hero 6 is going to be an incredibly fun movie that both kids and adults are sure to enjoy. The tone and style of this story is perfect for a feature film, and it's definitely something to look forward too!

Above you'll find a new image from the film of Hiro and BayMax sitting on a balloon of looking over the fictional city of San Fransokyo, a combination of San Francisco and Tokyo.

Here's a description from Disney:

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Big Hero 6” hit the D23 Expo in style, welcoming director Don Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”) to the stage with a story presentation, including concept art and a sizzle piece designed to build excitement for the action comedy adventure.
“Big Hero 6” features brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action and all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the CG-animated “Big Hero 6” hits theaters in 3D on Nov. 7, 2014.

KICK-ASS 2 - Hit Girl Vs. Mother Russia Fight Teased in Featurette

One of the most anticipated fight scenes in Kick-Ass 2 is when Hit Girl fights Mother Russia. There's a new featurette for you to watch that teases the brutality of that brawl. This is a teenager fighting a huge 7-foot grown woman of solid muscle. I'm sure most of us are rooting for Hit Girl, but there's a few sickos out there that would like to see Hit Girl get her ass kicked by this monster of a woman. No offense to monstrous women, but Mother Russia is just freakin' terrifying! Here's the featurette!

Just a side note, has Falco ever looked more threatening? It's a far cry from the mad dashing little blue bird in Smash Brothers. First 10 Minutes of TOY STORY OF TERROR Screened at D23!

$

One of the big surprises at D23 is when John Lasseter showed fans the first 10 minutes of the upcoming Toy Story Halloween special, Toy Story of Terror

What starts out as a fun road trip for the Toy Story gang takes an unexpected turn for the worse when the trip detours to a roadside motel. After one of the toys goes missing, the others find themselves caught up in a mysterious sequence of events that must be solved before they all suffer the same fate in this “Toy Story OF TERROR!”

The special is 30-minutes long, and it features several of our favorite characters from the Toy Story films. The original voice cast also returns such as Tom Hanks, Tim Allen,
Joan Cusack, Timothy Dalton, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, and Kristen Schaal. They’ll be joined by Carl Weathers, who voices Combat Carl and Combat Carl Jr., as well as Stephen Tobolowsky, who voices a hotel clerk.

What I loved about what was shown was that it pays tribute to almost every type of horror genre. I'm a huge horror movie buff, and it was so cool to see these characters put in this nightmarishly fun situation.

The movie opens with the characters watching an old black-and-white Dracula movie featuring a girl running from Dracula in a graveyard. It's revealed that the toys are watching it in the trunk of a car. The car ends up getting a flat tire and hits a bump, which throws Jessie (Cusack) into a tool box and is trapped. It's revealed that she is afraid of tight spaces because of all the time she spent in a box as an unused toy. The family ends up pulling off the highway and into a roadside hotel.

The family won't be able to get the car fixed until the morning so they are forced to stay in the hotel. The whole time Dalton's character, Mr. Pricklepants, is explaining how they are being set up for the perfect horror film scenario.

Once in the hotel room, Mr. Potato Head (Rickles) goes out to look around and never returns. So the group heads out on a mission to go and find him. They split up into groups, and while investigating Rex comes bumbling in and pushes them all into a vent in the floor. While looking around in the dark, Woody and Buzz come across Mr. Potato Head's arm, who starts to lead them into the direction where he is. A few other character are snatched up and taken in this sequence.

Woody, Buzz, and Jessie end up in a hotel bathroom where Woody and Buzz are taken, and Jessie is left alone where she is terrified. She starts to see and hear things. Then, from out of nowhere, Combat Carl shows up to warn Jessie of the dangers that are ahead and tries to get her to turn back. Combat Carl goes ahead to see if it's safe and in the process he disappears. Jessie is left alone in the bathtub.

The intensity starts to build as some kind of creature enters the bathroom, and all of a sudden, something jumps up and tears the shower curtain with its claws. That's where the first ten minutes ends.

What I saw was extremely entertaining, and I'm looking forward to seeing the whole thing when it's released.

The special comes from director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman, and it premieres on ABC October 16th, 2013.

Pixar's INSIDE OUT is Going to be Hilarious! D23 Footage Description and Art

$

0

One of the most entertaining things I saw at the Disney's D23 Animation Panel was one of Pixar's new films, Inside Out. Director Pete Doctor (Up, Monsters Inc.) came out to talk about the film, which centers on a little girl and her emotions. The emotions are the main characters of the film, and the little girl's head is the setting. Above, you'll find an image giving you your first look at the emotions which consist of Fear, Sadness, Joy, Disgust, and Anger. The voice cast includes Amy Poehler as the voice of Joy,
Lewis Black as the voice of Anger, Mindy Kaling as the voice of Disgust, Phyllis Smith as the voice of Sadness, and Bill Hader as the voice of Fear.

Inside Out takes you to a place that everyone knows, but no one has ever seen: the world inside the human mind. Riley, an 11-year-old girl who recently moved with her family to San Francisco, is not the main character but the setting for the film. Moviegoers will go inside her mind to explore how memories are formed and how a mixture of five emotions—Joy, Disgust, Anger, Fear and Sadness—defines life experiences.

They showed a few animated character tests, which look very different from any of the other character designs that Pixar has done. Mostly because they don't have flesh, they are made of out particles, so there's a lot of insanely cool detail.

A short clip from the film was also screened which features the main emotion Joy inside the mind of a toddler aged Riley. We are looking at a POV view from Riley and she spells out and 'R' with french fries on her plate of food and excitedly cries out "R for Riley!" Joy claps gleefully and pulls a lever, and a yellow orb comes rolling out, and stores short term memories. Those memories are stored in headquarters where they can be viewed at any time by any of the emotions. It's basically like watching a movie for them.

The last thing we saw was a fantastically funny sequence from the film. There was no animation completed for this scene. It was just storyboard art, but the script and dialogue was awesome! It had everyone in the arena busting up with laughter. It shows you just how inventive this movie is going to be.

The scene involved Riley and her parents eating dinner, and it showed the emotions in action. Joy is in another part of the brain looking for Sadness. The other emotions' attempts to operate without them cause an argument between Riley and her mom. Riley's mom asks how school was, and it obviously wasn't a very good first day because Anger jumps right in to take over the console in the “headquarters” setting in Riley's head. This leads Riley to show a little attitude toward her mom. What was great about this is that as soon as the attitude comes out, the scene jumps to what is going on with the emotions in her mom's head, and they all notice the attitude saying “What did she say to us?!” From there they start to counter attack, and guide what the mom needs to do next in the situation.

In the meantime, the Dad's just sitting there eating. At one point the mom's emotions guide her to shoot the dad a look to do or say something. When the mom shoots him a look for that help we cut inside to his emotions showing that his mind is watching a hockey game, and his emotions are cheering on the game. It then cuts back into the mom's head showing that she's pissed off at him for not paying attention. His emotions finally realize he's being watched, they make the connection that she needs some backup with the kid, so they all run to their battle stations, and take control of the situation.

Riley continues to throw out attitude. The dad's head escalates to "Defcon 2" mode, which is a precursor to "bringing the foot down." He's finally pushed to his limits, and they scramble like they are about to launch a nuclear missile. There are two keys that they turn simultaneously, and a button pressed, which bring down the foot of punishment, and Riley is sent to her room, and she stomps out.

I can't wait to see the finished product of this movie! From what I saw at D23, this could be one of the best and funniest movies that the animation studio has made. This is definitely worth looking forward to!  It was easily my favorite thing at the animation panel.

The movie hits theaters on June 19th, 2015.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE - International Trailer

We've got a new international trailer for you to watch for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. One of the things that I like about the trailers for these Hunger Games movies is that they never really show anything that happens in the games. They only give you footage from everything leading up to the death and carnage. Basically, they are saving all of the good stuff for when we go and see the movie! All trailers should be more like that.

The movie opens up in theaters on November 22nd, and I'm looking forward to seeing these teams of young people killing each other. It's all in good entertainment! How are these movies not rated 'R'?

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

THE GOOD DINOSAUR - New Concept Art and D23 Panel Description

$
0
0

We first heard about Pixar's The Good Dinosaur at the D23 Expo two years, and since then there's obviously been a lot of development on the film. During this year's Expo, Disney revealed some great new concept art as seen above, and there was also a lot more information on the film's story and characters.

John Lasseter started off the presentation with telling the fans that all their movies begin with the question... "what if?" For example, “What if toys were actually alive when you left the room?” or “What if monsters really were in your closet?” He then added that The Good Dinosaur is, “The biggest 'what if' ever.”

They then showed a clip from the film. It started out with... "65 million years ago," with a shot into space where we see an asteroid belt where one asteroid is knocked free by another one, and it's knocked from the belt and starts hurtling towards Earth. As it gains speed and the intensity builds for it to hit Earth… it flies right by Earth as a group of grazing dinosaurs stare up at the sky as the asteroid hurtles over their head like a shooting star.

The main idea of the film is that Dinosaurs never went extinct, and according to director Peter Sohn and producer Denise Ream, the dinosaurs have evolved through the years into industrious farmers who “Function as their own farm equipment.” For example, the triceratops is like a bulldozer, and the stegosaurus can cut down acres of crops.

Here's a new synopsis for the film offering up new details:

The Good Dinosaur asks the generations-old question: What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? The film is a humorous and exciting original story about Arlo, a lively 70-foot-tall teenage Apatosaurus with a big heart. After a traumatic event rattles Arlo’s tranquil community, he sets out on a quest to restore peace, gaining an unlikely companion along the way—a young human boy named Spot.

They then showed another clip from the film. There was no dialogue in it. It basically showed a team of long neck Apatosauruses plowing a field as they burrow their heads into the ground, and a few other farming tasks they have become accustomed to.

The movie will star the voices of Lucas Neff (Raising Hope), voice of Arlo; Bill Hader, voice of Forrest; Judy Greer, as Ivy; Neil Patrick Harris, voice of Cliff; John Lithgow, voice of Poppa; and Frances McDormand as Momma.

We were shown one other great sequence featuring Arlo coming across the first human he has seen who was running around in makeshift bug-like armor. This is Spot, who automatically starts to attack Arlo with a small spear. At one point the boy ends up in the Dinosaurs mouth, and hanging off his tonsils and ends up biting it only to be spit out of the Dino's mouth. As time passes we see the two characters form a bond and grow close to each other.

The final funny scene screened featured Spot trying to hunt down and catch a bug as it runs up Arlo's long neck high above the clouds onto the head where he barley misses the bug as it gets away. Arlo encourages Spot, encouraging him that he'll get the bug, and shows him some tricks. As Arlo tries to show Spot one of them, he spins around, which sends Spot flying off into the distance.

I really liked what I saw from the CG animated movie, and I'm sure it will do very well. After all, everyone likes dinosaurs! It will be released In theaters May 30th, 2014.

I normally wouldn't post anything on a straight to DVD Disney movie about Tinker Bell and her fairy friends, but this one stars Tom Hiddleston as a young cabin boy named James, who eventually becomes Captain Hook and Christina Hendricks as the Fairy pirate Zarina. It's pretty cool that Disney was able to get these actors on board, and the fans at the D23 Expo even got Hiddleston to sing the song "Bear Necessities" from The Jungle Book.  This is a movie my kids will definitely enjoy watching. I'm not sure about the rest of you, but here's the synopsis anyway:

When a misunderstood dust-keeper fairy named Zarina steals Pixie Hollow’s all-important Blue Pixie Dust, and flies away to join forces with the pirates of Skull Rock, Tinker Bell and her fairy friends must embark on the adventure of a lifetime to return it to its rightful place. However, in the midst of their pursuit of Zarina, Tink’s world is turned upside down. She and her friends find that their respective talents have been switched and they have to race against time to retrieve the Blue Pixie Dust and return home to save Pixie Hollow. With comedy, heart and epic thrills for the whole family,

Look! It's Chun-Li doing Shawn Michaels' finishing move, the Sweet Chin Music! Ok, not really. But c'mon, look at that pose! Anyway, while we previously got a look at the original artwork by Shunya Yamashita, we now have the fully painted piece. I've been looking forward to the Street Fighter line, but sadly I'm not really feeling Chun-Li. I'm not sure whether it's the expression (which to be fair, most facial things tend to be much better once the final product is in hand), or the pose, but something is not clicking for me. While the pose might not be my thing on its own, if we get a Juri or an Ibuki statue that has them reacting to her kick, well then I'm sold. On its own though, the statue is just a bit lacking, which is disappointing since Chun-Li is my favorite character from the series. If the statue does float your boat however, then you can add her to your collection sometime in January of next year.

Question time! Who do you want to see most from Koto's Street Fighter series?
