PROMETHEUS - New Image Featuring Noomi Rapace and Logan Marshall-Green

0
0

Here's a new image from Ridley Scott's highly anticipated sci-fi film Prometheus. The photo features Noomi Rapace and Logan Marshall-Green exploring what looks to be some kind of ancient alien ruins. I'm excited as hell for this movie!

The movie also stars Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, and Idris Elba, and it follows a "team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.”

The movie isn't set to be released until June 8th, 2012, so we have plenty of time to practice patience.

OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL - First Look at Flying Monkey

0
0

Thanks to Perez Hilton, we have our first look at what the monkeys will look like in Sam Raimi's OZ, The Great and Powerful. I'm actually not surprised that Raimi ended up putting actors in monkey suits, he's good at playing around with particle costumes, make-up, and effects. I'm looking forward to seeing what this looks like when its all polished up and on the big screen. I'll admit, it's still not as creepy as the original.

The fantasy adventure prequel to The Wizard of OZ stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff, Joey King, and Bruce Campbell. It's set to be released on March 8th, 2013. Are you excited to see Raimi's vision of the world of OZ?

Here's a description of the film:

Walt Disney Pictures' fantastical adventure "Oz The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking-that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Movie Review - CHRONICLE

0
0

Tyrants!

So, I’m sure you’ve heard of a little “found footage” superhero movie that just came out last week called Chronicle right? Tons of critics loved it. And so did the movie audiences as it was the #1 film in America. Want our thoughts? Keep on reading!

Synopsis:
Three teenagers in Seattle discover a sinkhole in the woods near a high school party, and its mysterious contents give them telekinetic powers. At first their powers grant them the ability to move small objects with their minds--things like Legos and baseballs. And the more they use their abilities, the stronger they become. Soon these super kids can move cars with their mind, shield themselves from injury, and even fly. But for Andrew, Steve, and Matt, with great power comes no responsibility and even greater consequences when one of the teens succumbs to his darker impulses.

What worked:
I’ll admit that after seeing the first trailer for Chronicle back in the fall last year, the concept of merging the found footage and superhero genres intrigued me. But what I ended up seeing was really a welcome surprise given the usual dearth of good movies in the first few months of the year.

First and foremost, Josh Trank has made a wonderful debut film here. He took a limited budget and made it look like a multi-million dollar flick (for most of the film).

Secondly, the actors made us give a crap about their journey and evolution. Dane DeHaan really sold the audience on the agony of his character Andrew, particularly in the early going as we see how miserable his life was dealing with social awkwardness and constant bullying at school. And then the poor kid had no respite at home as he had to contend with a mother dying of cancer and an alcoholic asshole of a father who beat the crap out of him whenever he needed to feel like a man.

Andrew was the person behind the camera for a majority of the movie, using it as a barrier between himself and thw orld. And as the audience gets a window into Andrew's life, one can see how much gaining the powers was a welcome release from the torment that was his existence.

Then there was Michael B. Jordan as Steve, the most popular kid in school and everyone’s friend. When Steve said he was going to do something, like someday becoming President of the United States, you believed him. I’ve liked this actor since seeing him on Friday Night Lights and Parenthood. His Steve was charismatic, motivated, fun-loving, and was usually the first to try out new things with his telekinetic abilities.

Then we had Alex Russell as Andrew’s cousin Matt Garetty. He did a decent job with what he was given, which was to be a typical high school kid who could be more if he tried harder. Matt cares for his awkward cousin and wants him to get out of his shell mor, but at the same time doesn’t want to be seen to much with him in public where it could hurt his social standing. Also, Russell did a really good job with an American accent as he is Australian.

After the trio gets their TK abilities, the close bond they form over testing out their abilities was believable and fun to watch. Especially when they first learn how to fly. That was one of the best scenes of the movie. Each of the actors really sold the exhilarating yet terrifying sensation of soaring through the air and what could go wrong if one is not paying attention what else is flying through the friendly skies!

We see in short order that Andrew is the most powerful of the three and using his powers comes more naturally, though Steve comes in at a close second due to him pushing his powers by way of amazing new feats (like the flying).

These early scenes of the three leads enjoying their powers are something that has been lacking in a number of big blockbuster superhero movies recently. I’m all for heading in a more mature, serious direction and all, but it's nice to showcase on film that having powers isn’t always a burden for every superpowered protagonist.

But seeing Andrew, Steve, and Matt bonding early on was what made the dark turn in Chronicle that much more impactful. As great as having powers is for Andrew, the amount of psychological damage he suffers from his father and the bullies at school does not decrease. Only now he has the means to fight back with gruesome results at times. And there is no parental figure in his life who taught him the tried and true mantra that Peter Parker lives by.

What didn’t work:
The 'found footage' angle works great in the beginning and middle of the movie when Andrew was the one chronicling both his life along with his, Matt and Steve's evolution. But toward the end of the film we witness an epic telekinetic brawl that rampages across downtown Seattle, and some of the angles and shots that are caught become a tad big preposterous, though the muted security camera shots of characters crashing through bank buildings was very inspired, as was the bafflement of the news reporters commentating on the floating people tossing cars and metro buses at each other.

Not only that, there was no indication of who patched together Andrew's footage with that of the news cameras and security footage.

Also, there were a few special effects shots that looked plain bad. But as those were few and far in between, I can overlook them.

Conclusion:
In closing, I really dug Chronicle. It wasn’t perfect, but seeing that its Josh Trank’s debut film, I cannot wait to see what else he is capable of when he gains more experience. See it as soon as you can!

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE - Super Bowl Trailer and New TV Spot

0
0

Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance looks like it will be brutally entertaining. The more I see from this movie the more fun it looks. I think one of the main reasons this version of Ghost Rider will work is because the filmmakers didn't take the character seriously, they just had fun with it. Today we've got the Super Bowl TV spot as well as a regular TV spot to share with you.

Here's the full synopsis:

Former stuntman and bounty hunter of rogue demons Johnny Blaze has been living in self-imposed exile, believing that his powers are a curse. But when he is approached by a member of a monastic order who is looking for someone to protect a mother and her son, who are being pursued by the devil in the figure of a man named Roarke, the Ghost Rider takes the case.

The movie stars Nicolas CageFergus RiordanCiaran HindsViolante PlacidoIdris Elba, and Johnny Whitworth, and comes out on February 17th, 2012. Check out the new trailer, and hit us up with your thoughts!

5 Quotes from Film Independent's Conversation with Gary Oldman

0
0

Friday night, Film Independent hosted A Conversation with Gary Oldman at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Oldman's 1990 crime noir State of Grace was shown on the big screen, curator Elvis Mitchell interviewed the actor, and the night concluded with a screening of the political thriller The Contender from ten years later.

Oldman spoke for nearly an hour on everything from the ever-changing physicality in his roles, to actually running through real fire with Sean Penn in State of Grace, to Malcolm McDowell influencing his decision to become an actor. It was a great opportunity to hear a man with one of the most varied careers in modern Hollywood history talk about his craft, his experiences directing his 1997 film Nil By Mouth, and much more.

They didn't allow photos or recording of the event, but I managed to snag a few choice quotes from Oldman during his discussion. I'm sure Film Independent will put (at least some) video from the event up on their website, so check out FilmIndependent.org for more information. Also, if you're in the Los Angeles area, they host all kinds of great events on a monthly basis, so bookmark their site in your browser.

On losing himself in roles:

It's all about giving the illusion of becoming someone else. If I'm playing a senator, or I'm playing [George] Smiley [in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy], he's not going to sound like Gary and he's not going to move like Gary. So I've spent my entire career trying to get away from Gary, and the sort of demons in my head, you know. That all comes from insecurity and doubt and all sorts of stuff. The happiest I've ever been was in Hannibal, because I completely disappeared and I achieved my goal. I thought, “I can't even recognize my ears.”

On originally passing on Sid and Nancy:

I thought [Sid and Nancy] was banal. I thought it was...”who cares about Sid and Nancy?” I'm not saying now, but at the time. I was a soul man. I was a James Brown guy. I never listened to punk and was not even remotely interested in it. I was working in the theater doing Shakespeare and stuff at the time, and I read this script. And in my arrogance, I thought, “who cares about this?”

On how he joined True Romance:

I met Tony Scott, and he said to me, “I can't tell you the plot, I'm not going to tell you the story.” He said, “I'm no good at that. [Drexl Spivey] is a white guy who thinks he's an African-American and he's a pimp.” I said, “I'll do it.” Unread!

On the challenges of acting in "big" scenes:

Roles that you play, you would come to work and it's like standing at the foot of the mountain and looking at the summit. And you think, “gee, I've got to get there today.” Will I have the reserve, will I have the resource? I'm going to go to a place, and will the well be dry or will it work?

On the filmmaking industry:

You get typecast, and people see you do one thing. First of all, you're at the mercy of what people are writing and what they're making. You're at the mercy of the industry and above and beyond that, you're then at the mercy of the imaginations of the people who are casting. They see you do one thing, and then they keep wanting you to do the thing. You do a comedy, and they see the comedy and go, “oh my God, he's funny! We've gotta get a comedy for Gary Oldman.” I always say to people, “watch Dracula. You know I can do comedy!”

Thanks to Film Independent for hosting, and be sure to check their website for more content from the conversation coming soon.

Crazy Trailer for Bin Laden Zombie Film OSOMBIE

0
0

Where in the hell did this movie come from?! A teaser trailer has been released for an upcoming crazy zombie film called Osombie. The story follows a team of Special Forces that hunt down Zombie Insurgents in Afghanistan, including Osama Bin Laden. This is one of those ridiculously over-the-top, cheaply made must-watch movies.

Here's the description:

Follows Dusty, a yoga instructor from Colorado on a desperate rescue mission to save her crazy brother Derek, a conspiracy theorist who is convinced Osama Bin Laden is still alive. In Afghanistan, Dusty falls in with a team of NATO Special Forces on a secret assignment. Turns out Derek is not so crazy after all, and Osama Bin Laden has returned from his watery grave and is making an army of zombie terrorists.

The filmmakers are trying to raise $15,000 via Kickstarter to finish the film, so if you want to help out you can. Check out the trailer below, and tell us what you think!

RED LIGHTS - Character Posters Featuring Weaver, De Niro, Murphy, and Olsen

Buried director Rodrigo Cortes' new film Red Lights ended up being one of my favorite movies from The Sundance Film Festival. It was an extremely entertaining supernatural thrill ride that I think many of you would enjoy seeing.

It was wonderfully creepy and mysterious, and it has a very similar feel to classic films directed by filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchock and Roman Polanski. Read our review for the film here, or watch Ben and I talk about the film in our video review here

Millenium Entertainment has released four character posters have been released for the film featuring Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy, and Elizabeth Olsen. Check them out!

Here's the Synopsis:

Two investigators of paranormal hoaxes, the veteran Dr. Margaret Matheson and her young assistant, Tom Buckley, study the most varied metaphysical phenomena with the aim of proving their fraudulent origins. Simon Silver, a legendary blind psychic, reappears after an enigmatic absence of 30 years to become the greatest international challenge to both orthodox science and professional sceptics. Tom starts to develop an intense obsession with Silver, whose magnetism becomes stronger with each new manifestation of inexplicable events. As Tom gets closer to Silver, tension mounts, and his worldview is threatened to its core.

Must Watch Documentary RAIDING THE LOST ARK

0
0

Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the greatest adventure films ever made, I have yet to meet someone that isn't a huge fan of the Steven Spielberg-directed film. It's a movie geek legend, and it's basically everything we love about movies.

Jamie Benning has created a fantastic documentary called Raiding the Lost Ark. Benning calls his docs "filmumentaries," and this isn't the first one he made. He previously created three "making-of" documentaries for the Star Wars trilogy. The director has now released the full Indiana Jones doc for viewing online. Here's what the director had to say:

After 8 months of reading, chatting, trawling, editing and agonising, it’s finally here! You can contact me on Twitter @JamieSWB and at Filmumentaries.com. There is also a Raiding the Lost Ark Facebook group.

Here's a commentary on the doc as well from Wired:

Raiding follows the same format that Jamie basically invented, with hours worth of interviews and behind the scenes footage condensed and re-edited into the main flow of the film to produce a visual commentary of the movie-making process. Jamie has also added graphical reconstructions of deleted scenes, subtitled facts (many taken from The Complete Making of Indiana Jones), and scans from the production diaries, offering an unprecedented insight into the first and best Indiana Jones film.

The real coup with Raiding, though, comes from the fact that Raiders director Steven Spielberg has yet to release an official commentary track on any of his films, so this really is the next best thing, with many clips from interviews from the last thirty odd years giving a great insight into the way he thinks and how certain, memorable, shots came about. An early gem of background info comes from actor Alfred Molina, who played Indy’s guide at the beginning of the film, as he recounts his experiences with all those tarantulas! Makes me shudder just thinking about it. And I love the ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ way Jamie has inserted the title of his film right in with the real title. I’d heard that Tom Selleck was considered for Indy, but it’s a real treat to see a bit of his screen test, playing opposite Sean Young as Marion.

This is a must watch for any movie geek! Check it out below, and tell us what you think. Enjoy!

New Images from Karl Urban's DREDD

It's crazy how little we still know about the new Judge Dredd film being made. Dredd is being directed by Peter Travis (Vantage Point) from a script written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine), and it stars Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby

Here's four new images from the film giving us another look at these characters. I like what I've seen so far. I can't wait to see a trailer!

Here's the synopsis:

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

Dredd hits theaters September 21st, 2012.

A New STAR TREK Series Might Actually Happen

0
0

Over the years we've heard about several different attempts to get Star Trek back on the small screen. It looks like there's a possibility that it could actually happen. For those of you who didn't know, Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Voyager) and Bryan Singer (X-Men, Superman Returns) have each separately tried to develop a Star Trek. They're now looking to team up on their efforts to make it happen.

This collaboration came about while developing the new Munsters TV series on NBC called Mockingbird Lane. The news comes from AICN, which reports,

Fuller tells AICN exclusively that the two Bryans, who have long (but separately) contemplated new “Star Trek” TV series, have discussed the possibility of pooling their resources to take a new corner of Gene Roddenberry’s multiverse to the small screen. Hopefully J.J. Abrams and Les Moonves will give them the keys to Starfleet HQ.

I know that there's still a great Star Trek series waiting to be created, and I think it would be amazing to see these two talents team up to make it happen. I imagine that they'd end up giving us fans something spectacular. Would you be excited to see these guys develop a Star Trek series together?

ACT OF VALOR - Super Bowl Trailer

0
0

Here's the Super Bowl trailer for Relativity Media's awesome looking Navy SEAL film Actor of Valor. The movie is described as “a hybrid feature film based on the SEAL ethos that highlights both naval special warfare capability and fleet interaction.” Co-director McCoy said, “I found the SEALs fascinating. People never know exactly how far you can push yourself, and the SEALs are a direct representation of that.”

The new film was directed by ex-stuntmen and documentary filmmakers/commercial directors Mike “Mouse” McCoy (Dust to Glory) and Scott Waugh (Step Into Liquid) and written by Kurt Johnstad (300). It stars Alex VeadovRoselyn Sanchez, and Nestor Serrano.

I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. I think it looks pretty good despite the fact that it has no real actors in it. It's just watching real Navy SEALs in action. Check out the Super Bowl trailer below, and tell us what you think!

Here's the synopsis:

An unprecedented blend of real-life heroism and original filmmaking, Act of Valor stars a group of active-duty U.S. Navy SEALs in a film like no other in Hollywood's history. A fictionalized account of real life Navy SEAL operations, Act of Valor features a gripping story that takes audiences on an adrenaline-fueled, edge-of-their-seat journey.

When a mission to recover a kidnapped CIA operative unexpectedly results in the discovery of an imminent, terrifying global threat, an elite team of highly trained Navy SEALs must immediately embark on a heart-stopping secret operation, the outcome of which will determine the fate of us all.

Act of Valor combines stunning combat sequences, up-to-the-minute battlefield technology, and heart-pumping emotion for the ultimate action adventure film--showcasing the skills, training and tenacity of the greatest action heroes of them all: real Navy SEALs.

PROJECT X - 3 New TV Spots

0
0

Warner Bros. has released three new TV spots for the Todd Phillips (The Hangover) produced found footage film Project X. It looks like it will be entertaining, and I'll give it a shot. I'm just not overly excited about it.

Here is the synopsis:

“Project X” follows three seemingly anonymous high school seniors as they attempt to finally make a name for themselves. Their idea is innocent enough: let’s throw a party that no one will forget… but nothing could prepare them for this party. Word spreads quickly as dreams are ruined, records are blemished and legends are born. “Project X” is a warning to parents and police everywhere. This film has been rated R for crude and sexual content throughout, nudity, drugs, drinking, pervasive language, reckless behavior and mayhem-all involving teens.

The Nima Nourizadeh-directed film invades theaters near you on March 2nd, 2012. Watch the three new TV spots below, and tell us what you think!
