SDCC 13: THE LEGEND OF KORRA, BOOK 2

0
0

So here's the deal, I don't watch Korra, and I don't know a ton about it. But I happened to see the first episode of Book 2, and it looks really good. Funny and charming with a totally engaging story. Good call on loving it, you guys. I don't want to give everything away, and I don't know everyone's names, so I apologize in advance.

Korra is continuing her training with the air bender dude. Her trainer is pretty strict, which annoys her, and his brother is now constantly around to let her off the hook, which annoys him. She returns to her home in the south for a major festival, which Korra is looking forward to, as it is always a bunch of fun. Also visiting is her uncle, the chief of the water benders, who lives in the North. He is basically Captain Condescension and thinks the South has abandoned their spiritual heritage. The festival used to be a solemn occasion to commune with the spirits, and is now basically a carnival. He is clearly agitating to disrupt/take over Korra's training, and even though he seems even less fun than her father and her trainer, Korra is intrigued by the idea of traveling for her training instead of staying near home. Also of concern is a series of spirit attacks on ships and later on the festival. As the Avatar, Korra is the link to the spirits, and according to her uncle, her spiritual training is woefully lacking.

It looks like Book 2 is going to be about Korra branching out. There are also 2 sets of brothers (her father and uncle and her trainer and his brother) in near constant conflict over Korra's training, which is a kind of interesting dynamic. The original Avatar from 10,000 years ago will be back somehow, and two writers from the original Avatar series, Josh Hamilton and Tim Hendrik, have joined the team to guide us through this season.

The Legend of Korra: Book 2 premieres sometime in September, and I think I'll be tuning in!

LEGO Death Star Trench Run

Usually the miniaturized LEGO version of a giant set piece must be simplified to a certain degree because, well, it's made out of LEGO. But this LEGO recreation of the last section of the Death Star trench that leads to the exhaust port seems more intricate and detailed than the actual version used for the movie. There's no info on who built this epic Star Wars tribute, but the pic was taken by Flickr user Abathar

Marvel has released nine new photos from Joss Whedon's new series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., featuring several characters in action. The full pilot episode was screened at Comic-Con yesterday. I didn't have a chance to see it, but I heard from one of our writers who did, and she really enjoyed it. Stay tuned for a review on that soon.

I also included a video of the full panel presentation at Comic-Con that features Whedon, Clark Gregg, Ming-Na, and others talking about the upcoming series. Check it out!

UPDATE: Director Zack Snyder officially confirmed the news below at Comic-Con!  He presented the following logo:

It looks like Batman and Superman are finally going to be on the big screen together! The last couple of days at Comic-Con I've been hearing that Warner Bros. would be bringing DC Comics' Worlds Finest to the big screen, which is pretty some pretty badass news that I was hoping to see actually happen. Now THR and several other outlets are confirming what I've heard. Apparently the studio is going to develop a Batman and Superman film. The movie will be directed by Zack Snyder, and they are looking to release it in 2015!

This will basically be the sequel to Man of Steel and help pave the way for Justice LeagueHenry Cavill is set to reprise his role as Superman, but there's no word on who will play Batman in the new film.

The studio also has set tentative plans to develop a Flash movie for 2016 and Justice League for 2017. As we already reported the movie will be written by  David Goyer.

I really enjoyed Man of Steel regardless of its issues, and I'm incredibly excited to see Worlds Finest inspired film! Batman and Superman on the big screen together is going to be epic! Stay turned for more news as it breaks!

MASS EFFECT: Foundation #1 Review - A Solid Start

Writer:  Mac Walters

Artist:  Omar Francia

Mass Effect: Foundation is the new series from Dark Horse Comics that happens to take place around the same time as the original Mass Effect trilogy (yeah buddy, that's called future-proofing) and features some ties to the final DLC pack for Mass Effect Citadel. Issue 1 takes place on a mining facility, and is sadly what you would expect from a facility of this ilk. Workers of all ages, races, and genders working in subpar conditions, and nary a twinkie in sight (which is really the most wrong part about all of this).

The story picks up with an unknown agent who is tracking down a man named Roth, and along the way decides to come to a child's rescue and  end up with a pretty useful sidekick. The pace is quite fast, but Walters manages to evoke compassion for the child, which is impressive given how much action there is in this issue. The hit itself is much less interesting than seeing who the child becomes and how they get there. Some familiar names pop up, such as the Shadow Broker and Barla Von, and just like in the games those little bits of info make you feel like you’re truly in a world much bigger than you, something Walters has shown before in his writing duties on Mass Effect 2 and 3.

As for the art, Omar Francia’s action scenes flowed extremely well, and his facial work was excellent, though I didn’t feel the colors on this issue did them justice. The mining facility setting led to the use of lots of muted browns and reds, which I get, but it made the book look rather bland.

By issue's end we get a look at one of the main characters going forward in Foundation, and overall the issue left me wanting to see where the story goes from here.

As always, Cerberus is nothing if not interesting. You can see a preview of the book over at Darkhorse.com

WORLD OF WARCRAFT Movie Teased at Comic-Con!

Right after Legendary Pictures' Godzilla panel at Comic-Con, moderator Chris Hardwick surprised us by introducing the first teaser trailer for Blizzard's World of Warcraft! I'll get right into the description of the incredibly cool looking footage that we saw....

The footage starts out in a wretched desert landscape environment. You can tell it's on another planet or dimension based on a hint of green glowing light in a cloud mass in the sky. A fantasy-looking male character enters the scene. He's dressed like a medieval-style Mad Max. As he stands alone, he takes a drink of water and then pulls a huge sword with a dragons head on the hilt from behind his back. He holds it in his hand like he's preparing for battle. As he looks around he sees the skeletal remains of a dead soldier in armor, and then sees something in the distance. He approaches the dead soldier and picks up a shield laying next to him. At that point he slams the sword and the shield together, making an intimidating sound as a way of telling whatever is coming to him that he's ready to fight! The camera pulls back and we're looking over the green shoulder of an Orc who raises a giant hammer into view! We also see a classic western style gunslinger shot of the soldier ready to fight the Orc in the distance. The two charge each other, as the man raising his sword, and the Orc raises his hammer. We see the Orc jumping up in the air and bringing the hammer down right on us... epically badass!

The film's director, Duncan Jones, then came out, expressing his crazy excitement about making the movie. Hell, I'm excited about him making it because I know he's going to do a hell of a job bring the film to the big screen! He confirmed that the movie would start shooting early next year, and that was about it. Jones is going to destroy it in the best way possible! I can't wait to see what he has in store for it!

Skateboarders Battle Gravity in REVENGE OF THE BEASTS Short

Inspired by his childhood belief that skateboarders used magic for their gravity-defying maneuvers, German filmmaker Sebastian Linda decided to bring that fantasy to life with this magnificently shot skateboarding short, "The Revenge of the Beasts."

Without the use of tripods or dollies, they have captured some truly awe-inspiring sequences. The high speed cameras and use of powdered pigments make the bails look just as exhilarating as the makes. The skateboarding isn't necessarily all that technical or big, but the superb cinematography and camerawork emphasize the magical and gravity-defying nature of skateboarding, while the music makes it feel like you're watching a sci-fi film.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and a several  other cast members took the stage at the San Diego Comic-Con panel where the footage was revealed.

EDGE OF TOMORROW Character Poster with Emily Blunt

Warner Bros. has released another poster for their upcoming sic-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow featuring Emily Blunt as the female lead, Rita Vrataski, opposite Tom Cruise

Earlier today I had the opportunity to see the first trailer at Comic-Con, and this thing looks incredible! I was excited for the movie before, but after seeing the insane footage, I'm even more excited for it.

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.
But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski. And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

The movie also stars Bill Paxton, Kick Gurry, Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riley, Jonas Armstrong, and Franz Drameh. It's set to hit theaters June 6th, 2014.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST - Badass Footage Description!

20th Century Fox just screened some footage from X-Men: Days of Future Past, and HOLY SHIT! It was amazing! No joke. Watching that footage gave me goosebumps, and I was on the verge of crying. I wasn't expecting what they gave us, but X-Men: Days of Future Past could easily be one of the greatest comic book movies ever made. The fact that it's going to come from Fox surprises the hell out of me.

This was hands down the best panel at the convention. They brought up almost the entire freakin' cast of the film, and the crowd went insane! I hope this footage gets released online soon so you can see it because my description is going to do it no justice.

It started with a closeup of an eye, with a voiceover of Professor X (Patrick Stewart) asking, "What's the last thing you remember?" Someone responds, "I had a glimpse into the past." Professor X proceeds to tell Wolverine, "You're going to have to do for me what I once did for you."

At that point there are a series of quick flashes of all the mutant characters that will be included in the movie. Those characters include Storm, Kitty Pryde and Ice Man, Bishop, Magneto, and a bunch of other familiar faces I can't name off the top of my head right now.

The footage shows that Professor X and Magneto have come together "side by side, to end this war before it ever begins."

It then cuts to Wolverine who goes on to say, "So I wake up in my younger body, and then what?" Professor X responds with, "Find me, convince me of all this." Then Magneto comes in and explains that Wolverine will find younger Magneto as "a darker person." It then cuts to footage of 1970s versions of Magneto and Professor X as a long haired and bearded hippie type guy. Magneto is shown levitating. We also see a young Mystique crying, and a young Beast howling.

The older Professor X then says, "I was a very different man. Lead me, guide me, be patient with me." Wolverine responds, "Patience isn't my strong suit."

Then there were more clips with young Magneto using his powers to pull Mystique along the floor, who looks like she's in trouble. We see a mysterious trapdoor opening under the Oval Office of the White House. We then see Richard Nixon looking a little freaked out as he's rushed into a shelter as things are breaking down around him. Mystique is walking down the street while she changes her appearance. Of course, there are some cool explosive visuals. Then there are shots of Beast screaming, Mystique walking away from an airplane, Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask and a lot of other stuff.

Young Professor X continues to say, "I don't want your suffering. I don't want your future!" Then we see the older Professor X who is face to face with his younger self as he says, "Please. We need you to hope again." That, my friends, was a very goosebumpy, spine-tingling moment.

That's it, and it was incredible!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY - New Promo Art and Footage Description

0
0

I seriously can't believe that Marvel already had footage from Guardians of the Galaxy to show the fans at Comic-Con! But they did, and it was glorious! For any of you who have been skeptical about this since it was announced, just wait until you see what director James Gunn has in store for you. This movie is going to be amazing, and Rocket Raccoon is going to kick some major ass!

They brought in the cast that has been announced so far which included Chris Pratt as Peter Quill a.k.a Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Benicio Del Toro as The Collector,  Karen Gillan as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou as Borath, and Lee Pace as Ronan The Accuser. None of them talked much about the film because they didn't want to give away any plot points. Gillan surprised us with her new bald head for her character though! Her beautiful red hair is gone, and it made me sad. But I'm sure she'll be awesome in the movie!

Here's the description of the footage:

It open up on a desolate alien world, and we see Peter Quill, aka Starlord, walking inside some kind of ancient temple. He moves in to steal an old alien orb. He's then interrupted by a small team of alien cops with big ass guns drawn on him. Their leader Borath, played by Hounsou, orders him to "Drop it now," and asks Quill who he is. "Starlord," he replies, expecting some kind of reaction. "Who?" Borath asks. "Starlord, man. Legendary outlaw... Forget it."

Then there's a shot of someone using some kind of wrist tech thingy, and we're in an alien prison. It then cuts to Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly), who reads through five holographic rapsheets for the Guardians of the Galaxy, who have been arrested. The characters include — Drax the Destoryer, Gamora, "a personal death machine," Rocket Raccoon, who has over 50 charges of vehicular theft and prison escapes, Groot, described as a houseplant and muscle, and then Starlord.

While talking about Peter Quill calling himself Starlord, Quill did this thing where he cranks up his middle finger as if it's a crank. Afterwards, he says something to the effect of, "I'm sorry. I'm not sure how this machine works." Later, Quill is in prison and Drax is listening to his personal stereo, which is playing a bouncy "gamba gamba" tune. Quill rushes in for some reason and gets tasered.

They then go into an awesome montage of action shots, including an alien shooting a gun, a prison riot, Gamora kicking ass, Rocket Raccoon going ballistic on a shootout with a hilariously vicious look on his face.

The footage concludes with Reilly saying, "They call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy," and one of the guys working with him says, "What a bunch of A-holes." And we see the five of them lined up, like the Usual Suspects -- similar to the image above.

Here's the Press Release:

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Movie Logo!

Yesterday, Joss Whedon made a very short appearance at Marvel's Comic-Con and revealed the title of the Avengers sequel! That title is Avengers: Age of Ultron! They had a pretty cool animated opening sequence introducing the sequel that teased Ultron's look. It looks like we have another epic Avengers movie coming our way!

Age of Ultron is originally a 10-issue limited series comic crossover storyline. It was published earlier this year, and it involves the return of Ultron and his conquest of the Earth. Here's a more detailed description of the story,

Months after his return, the artificial intelligence known as Ultron decided to accomplish his goal of destroying humankind by launching a massive and abrupt attack on Earth, taking over the whole planet, killing thousands of innocents and dozens of heroes and villains who stood in his way. Only a few of them are still alive, in a secret refuge under Central Park, ready to reclaim freedom or die trying.
Marvel doesn't perfectly adhere to the comic storylines with their films, so I imagine this movie is going to go in a little different direction, but still keep the main theme of the story.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES - Official Photo of Caesar!

0

Fox has released an official photo of Caesar from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. This is actually a shot from the final scene that we saw in the trailer that was screened for the Comic-Con audience. The trailer was done really well. I loved the tone and vibe of it. I'm sure something will be released for you to watch in the near future, but in the meantime here's this image for you to check out!

The movie is being directed Matt Reeves and stars Andy SerkisJason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises), Keri Russell (Mission Impossible III), Toby Kebbell (The Prince of Persia), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, ParaNorman), Enrique Murciano (Traffic, Black Hawk Down), Kirk Acevedo (The Thin Red Line), and Judy Greer (The Descendants).

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

The movie comes out on May 23rd!

Disney Announces STAR WARS and PHINEAS AND FERB Crossover

“May the Ferb be with you.”

Disney's Phineas and Ferb was a huge hit when they threw The Avengers into one of their storylines. Star Wars is also going to get in on the Phineas and Ferb action!

Series creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh made the announcement at Comic-Con, and it will be an hour-long special episode that will "place the wacky main characters of the kids show in the same timeline and place as Star Wars.”

The storyline will feature the characters existence on the Star Wars planet Tatooine, and "will be disturbed when plans to destroy the Death Star unwittingly fall into their hands."

It's good to see Disney having so much fun with the Star Wars franchise, and I'm sure this will be just as entertaining as the Marvel episode they did.

The History Channel has released the awesome Comic-Con trailer for the upcoming second season of Vikings! I really enjoyed the first season, and it looks like we've got a great second season ahead of us!

The series was created by Michael Hirst, and the story centers on a Norse hero named Ragnar Lodbrok (Travis Fimmel), who rises from a young Viking warrior to the leader of his clan. The trailer centers on an epic bloody battle between Ragnar and his brother.

Watch the Entire Comic-Con MARVEL Panel!

Marvel Studios put on a hell of a show at this years San Diego Comic-Con! It was epic in every way you can imagine, and easily the best Panel at the convention. After the panel for X-Men: Days of Future Past, I wasn't sure they'd be able to top it, but they did, and it was glorious! The panel started out with Loki coming on stage to get the fans' geek blood pulsing through their veins. He commanded the audience, and we loved it! During the panel they showed amazing footage for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, and The Guardians of the Galaxy, which you can read about here. This video does not contain any of that footage, and there's no word on when or if Marvel will even release it. The panel was incredibly entertaining though so enjoy the video!

Marvel President Kevin Feige Talks Vin Diesel Casting

0
0

As you probably already know, Vin Diesel had a meeting with Marvel Studios, and Diesel has stated that it went very well. There's no confirmation yet on whom he'll be playing, but when Marvel president Kevin Feige was asked about it this is what he said:

"Well, here's what I will tell you about Vin. And I'll be very honest with you. We did a press day on the Captain America set last week or something. The very first question was, 'So how did the meeting with Vin Diesel go?' I went, 'Here's the funny thing, it hasn't happened yet. It happens at 3 p.m. today.' And they went, 'Oh, really?' And it did and he came by and met. So, I'll say two things: One, there's nothing to announce with Vin. Vin is an amazing guy and an amazing personality."

He then went on to say that no announcements will be made on the casting at Disney's upcoming D23 Expo either.

"No. It's so far ahead it may not even exist. So, there's nothing to announce. But, I love Vin and he's an amazing personality. Look how much attention he's gotten for a meeting. He's incredibly shrewd. He's got a Riddick movie that I can't wait to see. And the Fast & Furious franchise, in addition to Vin, is a franchise I admire a lot for turning the sixth and next year the seventh into the biggest and most popular one. As far as a piece of it? Could someday we do a Luke Cage: Hero for Hire in that kind of vein? Totally."

I'm looking forward to the day where we find out who he will play, and I just can't help but can't think that it's going to be Thanos. I know a lot of people think it's going to be Vision, but I doubt that will happen.
