THE RAID Sequel - Brief Story Details - Film already Picked up by Sony

The Raid is one of the most insanely awesome action movies I've ever seen, and it's a franchise that's begging for a sequel. The sequel has been in development, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has already pre-bought the U.S., Latin American, and Spanish rights to the Indonesian action sequel.

According to Deadline production for the movie will start at the end of 2012 in Jakarta, and The Raid star Iko Uwais will be back to reprise his role as the ultimate badass. Director Gareth Evans is set to return as well as produce it through his PT Merantau Films.

The new film will have a much larger budget to play with, and although there aren't a lot of story details, our own Ben P had an opportunity to interview the director at Sundance. He revealed that the story will move from the apartment complex and into the city streets. The story will be told on a much larger scale, much like the Batman video game Arkham Asylum was upgraded to Arkham City for the sequel. The director is going to take the fight into the streets, and there's no doubt that it will be gloriously amazing.

Here's what he had to say during our interview,

The idea is to take it out of that building. We've already done something self contained, we want to do something now whereby the boss of that building and and the building itself everything that was terrifying and scary about that in the first film is considered small fry when it comes to the the second film. So, we go to a much bigger underworld organization, and it should be great.

So what do you think of that? It's basically going to get even more badass. If you haven't seen The Raid yet, I can't wait for you to finally be able to, because there's no doubt that you're going to love it!

Octavia Spencer Set for Sci-Fi Thriller SNOW PIERCER

The Help's Octavia Spencer just won a SAG award for best supporting actress and is likely to take home an Oscar this year. She has now been cast in Bong Joon-Ho's sci-fi thriller Snow Piercer, according to THR. She joins Chris Evans, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, and Korean actor Kang Ho Song (The Host).

Joon-Ho also penned the story that is "set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snow Piercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train but a revolution brews." Spencer will play "a passenger on the train who joins the revolt in order to save her son."
Snow Piercer is being produced by Chan Wook-Park and Dooho Choi. The most recent draft was written by Kelly Masterson and is based on the 1970s French graphic novel Le Transperceneige. This sounds like a great role for Spencer, who has had a wide variety of character roles throughout her career.

NBC Retitles MUNSTERS Reboot MOCKINGBIRD LANE

NBC is doing it's best to remaind us that their reboot of The Munsters is an “imaginative reinvention” that will have only a small resemblance to the classic ’60s show. TV Line reports that the network has given the show a new title. The pilot title has been changed from The Munsters to Mockingbird Lane, which nods at the family's iconic Victorian house located at 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller and Bryan Singer are stewarding the show. Casting is currently underway. This is one reboot that never should have been given the greenlight. I think that the new title is confusing.

MIRROR MIRROR - Two New International Posters

I can't say I'm too excited about Tarsem Singh's Mirror Mirror. It looks like a ridiculously silly comedy. It stars Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, and Armie Hammer, and I guess there's an audience for it, I'm just not a part of it. Maybe the trailer for the film was poorly cut, and the actual full movie will end up being better? I'm just trying to be a little optimistic. What are your thoughts on this movie?

Here is the synopsis:

Wicked enchantress (Julia Roberts) schemes and scrambles for control of a spirited orphan's (Lily Collins) throne and the attention of a charming prince (Armie Hammer). When Snow White's beauty wins the heart of the prince that she desperately pursues, the Queen banishes her to the forest, where a ravening man-eating beast hungrily awaits. Rescued by a band of diminutive highway robbers, Snow White grows into an indomitable young woman determined to take back her realm from the treacherous Queen.

Mirror Mirror arrives in theaters on March 30th, 2012.

Trailer for the Stephen Dorff Thriller BREAK

Stephen Dorff stars in a new triller called Break, in which he plays a man who who wakes up in the trunk of a car and has to figure out what the hell is going on and how he can escape without dying. It sounds very similar to the Rodrigo Cortés-directed film, Buried with Ryan Reynolds, where the character is trapped in a coffin through the whole movie. The two films are very similar, Break just has a few other elements added to make things a little different.

You'll be able to watch the film on February 17th on SundanceNOW.com, Amazon.com, iTunes, XBox, or Playstation. A month later it will be released in theaters on March 23rd.

Here's the Synopsis:

Jeremy Reins (Dorff) is about to have a very bad day. He wakes up in total darkness, confused and disoriented. The only light comes from the blood-red digital numbers ticking away above his head. Jeremy quickly realizes he's in trouble. It's hard to breath. He can barely move. And no one will answer his cries for help. Then, he hears the sound of an engine and it all becomes clear...he's trapped in the trunk of a moving car.

As his captors reveal themselves and their motives, Jeremy realizes he won't be set free until he gives up the whereabouts of "Roulette," a secret location where the U.S. President is taken in the event of a terrorist attack.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm - The Animated Movie was a hell of great Batman film. Here's a great poster designed for it by animator and artist Kevin Altieri, who was the sequence director on the movie. The poster was actually an insert of Superman/Batman Magazine #2, and these are scanned images.

It's been awhile since I've watched Mask of the Phantasm, and I think its time to watch it again. If for some crazy reason you havn't seen this movie yet, you should check it out.

THE EVIL DEAD Remake's New Female Lead Is Jane Levy

Jane Levy, the star of ABC's sitcom Suburgatoryhas been officially cast in the lead female role of the Sam Raimi-produced and Fede Alvarez-directed remake of The Evil Dead. She will replace Lily Collins who was previously cast in the role but ended up dropping out. I personally think Levy is a great choice. She's not a very well-known actress, but I've enjoyed watching her on the series that she stars in.

The story follows five friends (David, Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and Mia) who hole up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead. A demonic force is unleashed, possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival. Other information on the film reveals that the lead character takes his younger sister to the family's cabin to help her kick her drug addiction. Without her drugs she becomes insane and difficult to control, which makes it impossible to see that she's actually possessed.

According to a previous report David is a mechanic and is engaged to Natalie. Mia is the sister heading to the cabin to detox; Olivia is her best friend/nurse. Eric, presumably, is the kid who unleashes the demons.

Levy is playing Mia, who is basically the female Ash character in this remake. The movie is set to open April 12th, 2013, and I'm looking forward to it!

What do you all think about Levy taking on this role in The Evil Dead?

Viola Davis Cast in ENDER'S GAME

The Help's Viola Davis has just been cast in a supporting role for the Gavin Hood-directed adaptation of Orsen Scott Card's Ender's Game. I still find it unbelievable that this movie is actually happening. Fans have been waiting for it for so long, and we still have a long way to go. But at least we know it's coming.

According to Variety, "Davis will play a military psychologist who oversees the emotional welfare of young trainees. She also helps design the games that test their skills and resilience." The actress will join the previously cast Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, and Harrison Ford. Damn, this is such a great cast so far! I'm excited to see who else they get to jump on board.

Davis was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards and is sure to make a great contribution to this film. What are your thoughts on Davis getting cast?

Here's a full description of the the classic 1985 Orson Scott Card sci-fi novel:

In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.

Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.

Writer-director Fede Alvarez has given fans the first behind-the-scenes look at his Evil Dead reboot. Thanks to Bloody Disgusting, we have a photo from the set that shows the path to hell. As you know from the original film that is the road (if you can call it that) to the cabin that the Ash and his friends visit for a peaceful weekend. Unfortunately things don't remain peaceful, as they stumble across the Book of the Dead and unleash demons.

Here is the Synopsis:

Evil Dead deals with five twenty-something friends who become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival." There is also reportedly drug elements in the story, since one of the friends is going through withdrawal.

Here is the image:

Earlier we reported that Shiloh Fernandez (DeadgirlRed Riding Hood) is set to star in the lead role, with Bruce Campbell confirmed for a cameo. The reboot is slated to arrive in theaters April 12, 2013.

RIDDICK Has Officially Begun Filming

Riddick officially began filming today. So far, we have seen a number of images from Vin Diesel, but today we have confirmation that filming is underway. Universal, One Race Films, and Radar Pictures has released an official announcement that includes story details and casting news.

Here is the official press release:

Universal Pictures, One Race Films and Radar Pictures announced today that principal photography has begun on the action-driven, sci-fi thriller Riddick. The shoot will take place in Montreal.

The latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000's hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.

Riddick also sees the return of Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Bourne Supremacy) as Vaako and introduces to the series Jordi Molla (Bad Boys II, Colombiana) as Santana, the arrogant captain of the mercenary ship; Matt Nable (Killer Elite) as Boss Johns, a man looking for answers; Katee Sackhoff (TV's Battlestar Galactica) as the Nordic mercenary Dahl; and Bokeem Woodbine (upcoming Total Recall) as bounty hunter Moss. Rounding out the cast are Dave Bautista (The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption), Conrad Pla (Immortals), Raoul Trujillo (Apocalypto), Nolan Funk (TV's Aliens in America) and two-time Grammy Award-nominated singer Keri Hilson.

The film is produced by Vin Diesel (upcoming Fast & Furious 6, Fast Five) and executive produced by Samantha Vincent (Fast Five, Fast & Furious) for One Race Films. Ted Field (The Last Samurai, Pitch Black) produces for Radar Pictures, while Mike Drake (Dream House, A Nightmare on Elm Street) also executive produces.

Twohy is joined on the film by a talented behind-the-scenes team, including director of photography David Eggby (Pitch Black, Mad Max), production designer Joseph Nemec III (A Perfect Getaway, The Hills Have Eyes, Terminator 2: Judgment Day) and editor Tracy Hall (Limitless, A Perfect Getaway, The Flock).

The Riddick franchise has also produced two popular video games: The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. As well, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has released the anime DVD The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury.

Riddick, which is shooting in Montreal, Canada, is a One Race Films production. The film will be released by Universal Pictures in the U.S., and Lionsgate is handling international sales.

I am looking forward to seeing this film, and like what I have seen thus far. What are your thoughts? Are you looking forward to seeing this third installment?

Intense Trailer for the Oscar Nominated Film BULLHEAD

Here's the trailer for the great looking dark, moody, and violent film Bullhead, which is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film or 2011. The movie played at Fantastic fest and did very well there. So well in fact that Drafthouse Film actually picked up the U.S. distribution rights and is scrambling to release it on February 17th 2012 just before the Oscars air.

The movie stars Mattias Schoenaerts, who looks like a absolute beast in the movie. Just from the trailer we can tell that he gives a hell of an intense performance as a violent man hooked on steroids and dealing with his inner demons. I'm looking forward to watching this one.

Here's the Synopsis:

Perhaps the year’s most stunning international debut, Michael R. Roskam’s BULLHEAD is a harrowing tale of revenge, redemption and fate. Domineering cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Mattias Schoenaerts in a ferocious breakout performance), constantly pumped on steroids and hormones, initiates a shady deal with a notorious mafioso meat trader. When an investigating federal agent is assassinated and a woman from his traumatic past resurfaces, Jacky must confront his demons and face the far-reaching consequences of his decisions. Acclaimed at festivals worldwide including the Berlin Film Festival, AFI Fest and Fantastic Fest, the award-winning BULLHEAD is visceral thriller bursting with rage that TwitchFilm calls “one of the most original crime films in recent memory.”

Katherine Heigl To Join R-rated Puppet Film THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS

$

0

Normally, I could care less what Katherine Heigl does these days. I have no interest in pretty much anything she's ever done. Surprisingly, today we've learned that the actress is in final negotiations to star in the Jim Henson Co's R-rated puppet film The Happytime Murders. I honestly never thought she would ever do anything so edgy. This may be the one film Heigl stars in that I actually want to see.

The film takes place in a world where humans and puppets coexist, with the puppets viewed as second-class citizens. When the puppet cast of 1980s children's TV show The Happytime Gang begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced alcoholic LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet takes the case with his former human partner.

The film noir muppet style comedy is being directed by Brian Henson (A Muppets Christmas Carol) from a script written by Todd Berger (Kung Fu Panda 2). The film has been in development at the Henson Co. since 2008, and it cool to see that it's moving forward, even with it's with Heigl.

What are your thoughts on Heigl joining this film production?
