PACIFIC RIM - Another Epic TV Spot Unleashed

Warner Bros. has released yet another fantastic TV spot for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim! This is one of our most anticipated films of the summer. It looks like it's going to deliver on all levels of awesomeness. My expectations are through the roof on this thing, so I hope the film actually meets them. The spot features several quick flashes of new action-packed footage. It kind of amazes me what they fit into this 30 second ad.

We still have until July 12th to watch the movie, but that's ok because we've got Man of Steel and a few other films to tide us over until we watch giant robots beating the hell of giant monsters. Enjoy the new spot!

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Neill Blomkamp Talks about STAR WARS and Hints at DISTRICT 10

Neill Blomkamp was one of many talented directors fans wanted to see direct the next Star Wars film. All this was based off a one film portfolio, because District 9 is just that good. While promoting his second film, Elysium, IGN was able get him to talk about District 10 and Star Wars.

District 10:

"I really want to make a District 9 sequel. I genuinely do. The problem is I have a bunch of ideas and stuff that I want to make. I’m relatively new to this – I’m about to make my third film, and now the pattern that I’m starting to realise is very true is that you lock yourself into a film beyond the film you’re currently working on. But it just doesn’t work for me.

“I don’t know if it works for other directors, but the amount of ideas and the amount of different places I want to go through the duration of making one film, means that I have no idea what else I want to do during that process. I only know at the end. So if I say I want to make District 10, and then I have 50 ideas while I’m making [next film] Chappie, and when I get to the end I don’t want to make it, it’s not a good place to be at. But I know I want to make District 10 at some point.”

Blomkamp must be an idea machine if he won't commit to a sequel. I hope he does one day, but I'm very okay with him exploring new stories.

Star Wars:

“No. I don’t think so. I love Star Wars. I really, really love Star Wars. But I’m not the right guy. And also, just taking ideas that already exist in Hollywood is just not for me.”

I'd love to see him do at the very least a spin-off film. I think he would be the perfect director for a Boba Fett movie. Let's hope he changes his mind.

Here are a few more characters to add to his Pixar-style collection, featuring Flash Gordon, The Shadow, Dick Tracy, and The Phantom. They're all really cool!

THE ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE - Impressions

World of Warcraft should be a little scared. Somebody needs to knock them off their pedestal, and The Elder Scrolls Online just might do it. Elder Scrolls is a franchise with a massive fanbase, so it is easy to say that Bethesda has an instant hit on their hands. I was treated to a short 60 second teaser that showcased what you could do. Of course, they didn't show everything... it was only a minute.

But Matt Firor of Bethesda had this to say,

The Elder Scrolls Online will be available for Next Gen Consoles, PC , and Mac Spring 2014. The reason we decided to bring it to next gen consoles was because these new consoles are powerful enough to be able to run The Elder Scrolls Online. These new consoles are MUCH more powerful than the previous generation. In terms of size this game is SO large. It is many times the size of any previous Elder Scrolls game. The quest system is more than... kiling animals, it is very involved, usually involving multiple steps. There is a full crafting system and a new lockpicking system.

The recently revealed first person mode was shown in the video, although the demo did not have it yet. The PVP in action was absolutely incredible... 220 players onscreen! It was unreal, and I can't wait to be in the middle of that kind of chaos. Player customization was incredibly in depth from hair color to forehead structure and many more options, but I used a random creation since I didn't have 3 hours to spare.

What I got to play to play today took place in Daggerfall, which Elder Scrolls fans will remember from 2. The world is beautiful. The graphics are very different from other Elder Scrolls games, not as rugged or gritty. The world is smoother, but somehow combines a cartoon style with a realistic one. Usually in MMO's you have tanks, healers, and a damage dealer, and they have unique armor weapons etc, but with Elder Scrolls Online that is all about to change. I played as a Dragonknight (a heavy), but I was told if you want you can wear light armor and use daggers or arrows. The game is malleable, which is fantastic.

From what I saw, the voice acting was far better than Skyrim's, but let's face it, Skyrim's voice acting isn't hard to beat. I talked to a lot of townspeople and made my way to a mine where Redguard bandits were holding out. This is where the combat came into play, and it was awesome. It was probably one of the best combat experiences I've had in an MMO. The ability to block in real time was great and with that ability a sense of strategy is introduced with a parry and stun system.

When I asked a developer about subscription service seeing as the game is now coming to consoles, he said that they are still trying to figure that out.

Overall, The Elder Scrolls Online was amazing, and I only touched the surface... I cannot wait to go back to Tamriel.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 - Hear Jaime Foxx Preview Electro's Voice

It's clear from the leaked set photos of Jamie Foxx that his character undergoes quite the physical transformation in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Foxx talks a bit about the origin of Max Dillon's comb-over and gives us a preview of what the voice of Electro will sound like.

The voice is very whispery, and I have a feeling they will be adding a subtle effect to the voice in post.

Official Synopsis: In The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes to theaters on May 2, 2014.

Guy Sends Hilarious Video Resume To Dreamworks...Gets Banned For Life

CJ really wanted a job at Dreamworks. After applying the traditional way to no avail, he tried something different to set him apart from the rest. While video resumes are nothing new in the 21st century, is there anything new about having STEPHEN SPIELBERG in it?! Okay, not really; it's a chopped interview between the two in which he makes it seem like Spielberg's answering questions posed by the guy wanting the job. Clever move, but did it work? CJ was ultimately banned from any job ever at Dreamworks. Guess he shouldn't have used the Schindler's List interview...

PLANTS VS ZOMBIES - GARDEN WARFARE: Co-op Gets Front and Center in New Dev Diary

One of the many titles announced at EA's recent press conference was Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare, and the mode they are currently showing off is the 4 player co-op mode. In it you can select from 4 classes, including the Soldier (Pea Shooter), Melee (Chomper), Medic (Sunflower), and Sniper (Cactus), but along the way you can also utilize some of the other plants for your defenses as well, and I'm holding out hope that roster includes my current favorite: the cornpult. (Can you imagine the screenshots? Everybody on the field with giant cubes of butter flying over their heads. That's Craze Amaze.)

Anyway, if you want to get a better look at some of the various special abilities as well as the gameplay in general, take a look at the Dev Diary below. I've also included a recent Xbox spotlight that gives a better look at how the garlic comes into play.

By the way, I call the cactus right now! Potato mines are the best.

New RIDDICK Banner - I Bow to No Man

It's very clear in this new banner that Vin Diesel's Riddick is not going to take shit from anyone. The poster features the character walking through a scorching barren wasteland. I love these Riddick films, and I'm excited to see this one. It looks pretty awesome. You can watch the most recent trailer for it here

The David Twohy-directed also stars Karl Urban, Jordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, and Nolan Gerard Funk.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.

Ubisoft Developing Films for WATCH DOGS, FAR CRY, and RABBIDS

Ubisoft is on a role with announcing the games they want to turn into movies! They've just added Watch Dogs, Far Cry, and Rabbids to the list. They've already got got Ghost Recon with Michael Bay, Assassin's Creed with Michael Fassbender, and Splinter Cell with Tom Hardy. Yes, Uwe Boll already made a Far Cry movie, but let's just forget that ever happened.

The company will package the films up and start shopping them around to studios. Ubisoft will maintain creative control of the film project as they’re developed into movies. Under the direction of UMP CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet, they will hire the screenwriters, directors, and cast and choose the production shingles and studios it wants to work with. They will also finance the development of the scripts.

According to Baronnet, the reason they are doing it this way is so "no one can tell us you have to do the movie a certain way." I'm really hoping that Ubisoft knows what they're doing, and that they take these awesome games and turn them into great films!

Variety reports that Ubisoft is also currently in talks with Frank Marshall (Raiders of the Lost Ark) to serve as a producer on Assassin’s Creed, and Basil Iwanyk (Wrath of the Titans, The Town) to be a producer on Splinter Cell.

I'm not really familiar with Rabbids, but it looks like something the kids will enjoy. The game features an animated group of hyper rabbits known for causing mischief.

Watch Dogs hasn't been released yet, but from what I've seen here at E3, it looks incredible. It's a stealth game that lets players hack into people’s phones and other devices, as well as the city’s infrastructure to carry out missions and stop criminals.

Far Cry follows an ex Special Forces operative who searches for a missing journalist on a mysterious island when the sailboat they were traveling on is destroyed by mercenaries.

All of these games have the potential to be amazing films. I'm looking forward to seeing who they end up bringing in to develop them. One thing we do know is that they are going after A-list talent.

300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE - Mythologically Epic First Trailer

Fans of swords, shirtless buff guys, blood, screaming, and slow motion, we've got a movie trailer for you (thanks JoBlo). Zack Snyder won the trust of comic book geeks everywhere by making the visually bombastic 300. The sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire, aims to be even larger in its scope. After watching the trailer I can say they might have succeeded.

Synopsis: After its victory over Leonidas' 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches south towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes' army, bases its strength on its fleet, led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land.

THE EVIL WITHIN Impressions

There we were in the Bethesda showroom about to watch gameplay of The Evil Within, but before it even started we were treated to a little surprise... Shinji Mikami was there to introduce his game!!! This man is a legend. The creator of Resident Evil who went on to leave a huge impact on the game industry and reinvent the genre of survival horror.

Just as he did in 1996, his The Evil Within is poised to be a turning point for the struggling survival horror genre.

This is what he had to say,

It is an honor to be showing The Evil Within. My passion is horror. We are making a truly terrifying game and with this game we are taking survival horror back to its original roots. This is pure survival horror. You will experience unimaginable fear but then the triumph of overcoming those fears. With limited resources you have to learn to not fight but survive by sneaking and hiding. But the game does have a balance between horror and action.

This game looks great. The beginning is very eerie, and the script is top-notch. It's not at all cheesy, and the characters' spoken observations don't seem to be forced.

The game has you take the role of Detective Sebastian Castellanos. You arrive at a crime scene in front of an asylum but all the police cars are empty and there are no cops in sight. Your partner points out that all the back up guns from the cars are missing, but there seem to be no shell casings. You make your way inside where the nurses' and orderlies' dead bodies litter the floor. You then find a survivor (a doctor) in a surveillance room. He mutters some ambiguous yet unsettling things before he passes out. You walk over the the monitors where cops are firing at a semi-invisible force before all getting stabbed. The semi-invisible force is fast! The hooded figure looks up at the camera, and you see this scarred face. Then you turn behind you, and he's there to cut you!

You wake up in the basement of the asylum where you are hanging upside down from the ceiling. This part is all in first person which I thought was really cool. This butcher-like figure comes in and hacks one of the many hanging bodies around you. He takes the hacked body to the table to cut it up a bit more. I guess it wasn't hacked enough. While he's at the table you start swinging for the knife stuck in a neighboring body. You get it and cut yourself loose. You then sneak around to the door which is locked, of course. You steal the keys which are incredibly close to butcher and make your way back to the door. All of this is very reminiscent of Silent Hill.

As you make your way upstairs, you set off an alarm, and the butcher, now armed with a chainsaw, starts chasing you. This chase isn't short and went on for a good while. He gets to you and cuts your back. This is when you gain something of a limp. As you try to get away from the crazed butcher, you find yourself at a dead end, but as he is walking into the room you hide in a rusty old locker. He gets enraged that he can't find you, making loud groaning noises, then barrels his way through the previously locked door, giving you an exit. You make your way to the elevator while the butcher is just a step behind you. The elevator doors close, and the deformed butcher grinds his chainsaw at door. You have outrun death and are making your way back to the lobby.

You make your way to the front door, all the while the environment is shaking and mildly crumbling around you. When you get outside everything is rubble, and the city in the distance is completely destroyed.

The running animations could be better, a lot better. Sebastian runs hunched over with his arms flailing behind his back. It looks ridiculous. Hopefully this will change in the final product.

The next part of the demo happened in the "Perth House," a cabin in the woods. THE horror cliche, and this is where the demo got a bit more, yet not too much, action oriented. As you scavenge for ammo and health (in the form of syringes), you shoot two grossly disfugured humanoid creatures. You score a headshot on one which takes just the top off leaving the lower jaw intact. But these shots may have alerted others. When you look out the window, a mob of enraged and psychopathic creatures, who resemble the ones you just shot but are all a bit unique, have gathered outside the cabin.

This part of the demo greatly resembled Resident Evil 4's opening in the house within the village. Using some mines you scavenged, you get ready for the coming assault. You plant 3. 2 at the windows, 1 at the door. There are a TON! They just keep coming. You make your way downstairs but as you get to the door, the Hallway extends, and it happens again.

Then you're transported into some hospital hallway following a blood trail. You make your way to what looks like an operating room with a pile of bodies in the center. Then out of the pile of bodies comes this bloodied creature with disfigured and elongated legs and four arms with long black hair covering her face, who runs at you, pins you to the ground... and then it ends.

The Demo was definitely unsettling, and yet I want to visit this world again. It's a bit trippy, and the soundtrack isn't overwhelming. Also the attention to detail was amazing, for example when you step in a pool of blood your footsteps will then start to to squeak a bit.

The world of The Evil Within is grotesque and mystifying, and I can't wait to come back.

THE WALKING DEAD-400 DAYS: DLC Worth Dying For

$

Okay maybe not, but you get the point. While I may have exaggerated the lengths to which I would go to play 400 Days, I can't stress enough how excited I am for it. As someone who just finished the wonderful, yet heartbreaking (no spoilers here) final episode of Season 1, Telltale sure knows how to leave an impact, and I expect no less from the 5 new protagonists that star in 400 Days.

For those who don't know, 400 Days is a special DLC episode for Season 1 of The Walking Dead that tells a tale of 5 new survivors whose paths seem to cross at a truckstop in Georgia. You can play the stories of each survivor in any order, and that order will change certain events and things in other character's episodes. While it will not feature Lee or Clementine, it will recognize some of your choices from Season 1, and will also transfer some made in 400 Days to the eventual Season 2. I love the characters from the original season, and fully believe we will cross paths with them again in future seasons, but Telltale was able to not just develop characters but also wonderful fully realized world, and frankly any chance to play around in that world is one I will gladly take. Sure it was based on a great property, but as we've seen time and time again, that alone doesn't mean much.

400 Days is coming to PSN, XBLA, Vita, iOS, and Steam later this year.

GRAND THEFT AUTO V - 9 New Images

Grand Theft Auto has evolved a lot over the years. It was once the target of mad parents, but now seems very tame compared to some of the crazy gonzo stuff in other open world games. But what hasn't changed is the rich storytelling and immersive world. Rockstar North has released 9 new images for the highly anticipated game Grand Theft Auto V. The newest GTA heads to the city Los Santos which is essentially a clone of Los Angeles. I'm looking forwarding to playing it this fall.

Grand Theft Auto V will be available September 17th on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas on Hollywood's Impending Doom

$
0
0

As the old saying goes, "All good things come to an end." Right now Hollywood studios are doing very well for themselves. They are making big budget films that are paying off for them in spades. People are making a lot of money. Marvel is a perfect example of this with films like The Avengers and Iron Man 3. It doesn't hurt the studios to charge people more money to see their movies either. It seems like the are already forcing us to pay an extra $5 to see their movies in 3D and if you want to see the film in IMAX, well it's another extra $5. It's crazy that I find myself paying $21.50 to see a movie sometimes these days. It's kind of sad, especially since the economy isn't really getting any better.

During a panel at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas discuss all of these issues and how it's leading to Hollywood's inevitable meltdown. Lucas starts off by saying,

They’re going for the gold. But that isn’t going to work forever. And as a result they’re getting narrower and narrower in their focus. People are going to get tired of it. They’re not going to know how to do anything else.

Makes me wonder if he realizes that he's talking about himself in that statement. But that's beside the point. I understand what he's saying, but I also think there are going to be filmmakers out there that will help steer the industry in the right direction. Some filmmakers will fight the accountants, because lets face it, the bean counters run Hollywood.

Spielberg went on to explain that a lot of different forms of entertainment are competing for attention, "they would rather spend $250 million on a single film than make several personal, quirky projects." I've noticed that as well, and I hate that, lower budget films can still be really cool. There are studios that do make low budget movies, but I'd say the majority of them are horror movies. Spielberg goes on to talk about an implosion saying,

There’s eventually going to be a big meltdown. There’s going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen of these mega-budgeted movies go crashing into the ground and that’s going to change the paradigm again.

We've seen some of these big budget movies already crash and burn like John Carter and Battleship (sorry Taylor Kitsch), and those won't be the last. I hope I'm wrong, because I'm excited for the movie, but I have a feeling that Disney's The Lone Ranger might be next. Lucas went on to predict,

You’re going to end up with fewer theaters, bigger theaters with a lot of nice things. Going to the movies will cost 50 bucks or 100 or 150 bucks, like what Broadway costs today, or a football game. It’ll be an expensive thing. … (The movies) will sit in the theaters for a year, like a Broadway show does. That will be called the ‘movie’ business.

There’ll be big movies on a big screen, and it’ll cost them a lot of money. Everything else will be on a small screen. It’s almost that way now. ‘Lincoln’ and ‘Red Tails’ barely got into theaters. You’re talking about Steven Spielberg and George Lucas can’t get their movies into theaters.

We are seeing that happen now on a small scale. A lot of the great films that are being made that go to film festivals like Sundance and Fantastic Fest never make it to the big screen. Maybe they end up in arthouse theaters, but they are all being released through VOD now. So I can definitely see that trend spilling over into other studio films in the future. At one point Spielberg took a joing jab at Lucas, saying, "I got more people into Lincoln than you got into Red Tails." Lucas goes on to say,

What used to be the movie business, in which I include television and movies … will be Internet television. The question will be: Do you want people to see it, or do you want people to see it on a big screen?

It's hard not to agree with all this because they're right. As I've pointed out, this is stuff we're all starting to see happen. They go on to discuss the future of video games saying,

The big game of the next five years will be a game where you empathize very strongly with the characters and it’s aimed at women and girls. They like empathetic games. That will be a huge hit and as a result that will be the ‘Titanic’ of the game industry, where suddenly you’ve done an actual love story or something and everybody will be like ‘where did that come from?’ Because you’ve got actual relationships instead of shooting people.

That would be interesting. Games are constantly evolving, so it will be interesting to see where developers take storytelling from here. Spielberg then thinks ahead into the future of gaming in which he explained that the "real shift will come when game controllers are obsolete and games are controlled by Kinect-like devices that completely immerse the player in the story.

I believe need to get rid of the proscenium. We’re never going to be totally immersive as long as we’re looking at a square, whether it’s a movie screen or whether it’s a computer screen. We’ve got to get rid of that and we’ve got to put the player inside the experience, where no matter where you look you’re surrounded by a three-dimensional experience. That’s the future.

Lucas builds on that and takes it to the next level by suggesting brain implants are the future. He noted that such implants "are already being used to control artificial limbs; they just haven’t been used for entertainment yet."

The next step is to be able to control your dreams. You’ll just tap into a different part of your brain. You’re just going to put a hat on or plug into the computer and create your own world. … We’ll be able to do the dream thing 10, 15 years from now. It’s not some pie-in-the-sky thing.

From the fall of movies to the rise of video games and brain implants. These guys talked about it all. I'm curious to see where the future of entertainment takes us, but one thing is for sure, things are going to keep changing and evolving. We just have to be ready and willing to adapt to these changes. The one thing that will always remain constant is telling stories. That's the main ingredient in all of these things.

You still have to tell stories.  Some people will want to be in a game… and some people will want to have a story told to them. Those are two different things. But the content always stays the same. The content hasn’t changed in 10,000 years.

The End.

Tom Hanks to Produce and Star in A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING

Tom Hanks is set to produce and star in a big screen adaptation of the Dave Eggers novel A Hologram For The King. Cloud Atlas co-director Tom Tykwer is set to direct the picture from a script he adapted.

The story follows "a struggling businessman who, after failing in America, heads to a rising Saudi Arabian city for a last ditch attempt to stave off foreclosure, pay his daughter’s college tuition, and do something memorable." Throughout the story he "fights to hold himself and his splintering family together."

I'm a huge fan of Hanks and his film work. The guy is just one of the best actors out there, and he can pull off anything. This seems like it will be another great project for him to tackle. You'll next be able to see Hanks in the Paul Greengrass-directed Captain Phillips. He's also set to play Walt Disney in the John Lee Hancock-directed Saving Mr. Banks.

Tykwer is also a talented director who many of you know directed Run Lola Run. If you haven't seen that film yet, I suggest you check it out because it's fantastic. This movie has a solid small team of talent so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the material.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Writer to Take on TOMB RAIDER

Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer Marti Noxon is set to write the screenplay for the new Tomb Raider movie for MGM and GK Films. Noxon has also written films such as I Am Number Four and Fright Night

The movie is going to be based on the most recent video game that was released, which is a great game, and should make for a fantastic film. Angelina Jolie starred in two movies. The original was decent for the time, but the second one was disappointing. Neither one of them has stood the test of time, though. The next installment of films is sure to be a vast improvement.

Iron Man screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby previously wrote a script, but it must not have been very good if they are bringing on Noxon. She has experience writing for a strong female character, so I think she's a perfect choice to take a shot at it. It's probably why she got the gig. Graham King is producing the film, and here's what he had to say about the story in a previous interview,

It is really the story before she became Lara Croft, so it is a character piece. It does have a lot of really great characters, but it's a lot of action and a lot of fun, and for me, it's something very different. I've not really done a movie like that before, but I really gravitated to rebooting this franchise and we're going to give it a shot.

I'm excited to see how this turns out. I can't wait to see who they get to play Lara Croft!
