THE WIZARD of OZ in IMAX 3D - A Mix of Old and New Tech

The digital restoration of The Wizard of Oz is the newest gold standard of restored cinema. What might surprise you is that Oz was never shot on color film. They used special cameras with prisms to split the color and record them to black-and-white film. I own the Blu-ray of this gorgeous restoration which looks more amazing each time I watch it.

As part of Oz's 75th anniversary, Warner Brothers in partnership with IMAX are releasing an IMAX 3D version of the classic. As a person who loves 3D, IMAX, and The Wizard of Oz, I'm excited for this mix of old and new technology. I missed my opportunity when they released the restored Oz in theaters a few years ago. I'm not missing out this time. You will be able to watch the IMAX 3D version in theaters for one week starting September 20th.

Here's our first look at Luc Besson's upcoming action comedy The Family, which stars Robert DeNiroMichelle Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones. Relativity Media has released a trailer, a couple of photos, and a poster for the film. I enjoy the films that Besson makes, and this one has an incredible cast. It looks like it could be a great flick. Here's the synopsis:

The darkly comedic action film The Family is the story of the Manzonis, a notorious mafia family who gets relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program. While they do their best to fit in, old habits die hard and they soon find themselves handling things the “family” way.

The Martin Scorsese-produced movie opens up on September 20th. 2013.

Here are a few more set photos and videos from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, featuring Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson in action. This looks like it's the same sequence that involves Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier. There's also big shootout and a flipped-over DC bus. The movie is currently shooting in Cleveland, Ohio.

It's gotta be weird hanging out with your look-a-like stunt double.

Justin Theroux Joins Damon Lindelof's HBO Series LEFTOVERS

Justin Theroux is set to star in Damon Lindelof's upcoming HBO series Leftovers. The show is based on a novel by Tom Perrotta, and the story focuses on life after the Rapture. Basically, all of the people who didn’t make the cut are left behind to fend for themselves in a suburban community.

Theroux will play a character named Kevin Garvey, "a chief of police and father of two who is trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy in this new world."

The actor recently appeared in the movie Wanderlust, and had a recurring role on NBC’s Parks and Recreation. This won't be the first time he's been involved with an HBO series either, as he also had a role on Six Feet Under.

Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) is an executive producer on the series, and he will also direct the pilot episode. Here's a description from the book:

What if—whoosh, right now, with no explanation—a number of us simply vanished?  Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down?

That’s what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened—not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children.

Kevin Garvey, Mapleton’s new mayor, wants to speed up the healing process, to bring a sense of renewed hope and purpose to his traumatized community. Kevin’s own family has fallen apart in the wake of the disaster: his wife, Laurie, has left to join the Guilty Remnant, a homegrown cult whose members take a vow of silence; his son, Tom, is gone, too, dropping out of college to follow a sketchy prophet named Holy Wayne.  Only Kevin’s teenaged daughter, Jill, remains, and she’s definitely not the sweet “A” student she used to be.  Kevin wants to help her, but he’s distracted by his growing relationship with Nora Durst, a woman who lost her entire family on October 14th and is still reeling from the tragedy, even as she struggles to move beyond it and make a new start.

New Featurette for THE LONE RANGER - Armie Hammer Cliff Stunt

Disney has released a new featurette for their upcoming western epic, The Lone Ranger. This flick looks like it's going to provide audiences with some fun entertainment. This behind the scenes look show us Armie Hammer preparing for a death-defying stunt that director Gore Verbinski wants him to pull off. It's actually kind of funny. They are shooting the scene in Moab, Utah on the side of cliff, and just watching this made me nervous. I'm not a big fan of heights, so doing something like this would scare the shit out of me.

The film also stars Johnny DeppTom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson, and Helena Bonham Carter. It comes out on July 3rd, and I'm excited to see it!

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “The Lone Ranger,” a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice–taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

Great New Photo of Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel in THE HOBBIT

This is a fantastic new photo of Evangeline Lilly as the elf Tauriel in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. We've seen a couple of previously released photos, but they haven't been as beautiful looking as this one.  EW talked to the actress about the film, and this is what she said about the character she plays:

Tauriel is the head of the Elven Guard. She’s a Sylvan Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She doesn’t hold the same kind of status that Arwen or Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do — she’s much more lowly. She sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit.

She goes on to reveal that there's a love story surrounding her character,

She will definitely have a love story. I can’t give away too much about it. It’s not a huge focus but it is there and it is important and it does drive Tauriel and her story and her actions.

Lilly is then asked if the love story involves Orlando Bloom's Legolas, and this is what she said,

Tauriel’s relationship with Legolas is significant. They’ve known each other since they were children, and Legolas’ dad, [Elven king] Thrandruil, has a soft spot for Tauriel and sees something very special in her. So if you grow up side by side, and your dad has a very special spot in his heart for this young woman who’s a fantastic warrior, I think it’s hard not to notice her. That’s probably as much as I can say.

So my guess is that would be a yes. Cool!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be released in theaters on December 13th, 2013. The Hobbit: There and Back Again brings Peter Jackson's trilogy to a close on December 17th, 2014.

GAME OF THRONES - Bloody Red Wedding Featurette

I think it's awesome that people are still talking about the last episode of Game of Thrones. I know a couple of people that are saying they aren't going to watch the show anymore, and I'm like, "Why!? It's just going to get better!" Yeah it was an incredibly sad and gut-wrenching scene, but it's part of the story, and it was executed extremely well.

For those of you who want to relive the shocking bloody experience, HBO has released a behind the scene video featurette that fans of the show are going to want to see. It's 9-minutes long, and the producers go into depth, and share their thoughts on the Red Wedding scene, and they explain why it was one of the main reasons they wanted to make this show and what it means to the story they are telling.

Terrifying New Trailer for INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2!

The first trailer for James Wan's Insidious: Chapter 2 is here to creep you the hell out! It's insanely terrifying! The first movie was great, and I'm incredibly excited to see this one! I actually got goosebumps while watching the trailer. I love that! It looks like the sequel stays true to the original. I also like that it opens the mythology of this horrific universe up a little more. Wan is a freakin' horror movie genius!

The famed horror team of director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell reunite with the original cast of Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey and Ty Simpkins in INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2, a terrifying sequel to the acclaimed horror film, which follows the haunted Lambert family as they seek to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.

After this trailer was screened for an audience, Wan told them that the film plays with time travel a bit, and also said that where the first film delved into the haunted house sub-genre, Chapter 2 "toys around with another type of thriller sub-genre." He doesn't say what though.

The movie comes out on September 13th!

Hilarious Honest Trailer for THE LAST AIRBENDER

I don't know how you feel about M. Night Shyamalan, but I don't think I'll ever watch another movie of his again. I don't know how you can take a perfectly good show like The Last Airbender and turn it into a piece of crap, but the director managed to do just that. In fact, it was so bad I never finished watching the whole film. I knew it wasn't going to get any better. I haven't watched After Earth, and after reading the reviews, I don't think I'll waste my time.

The team at Screen Junkies has taken The Last Airbender and edited it into another one of their hilarious Honest Trailers.

Just when you thought M. Night Shyamalan couldn't get any worse, he ruins the perfect source material. Prepare yourselves for his most disappointing film yet, "The Last Airbender!"

I'm sure this will make you at least crack a smile.

Behind The Kickstart: XIA: Legends of a Drift System with Cody Miller

Kickstarter has been a great avenue for developers to get their games not only noticed but actually made. It has become almost as addictive as ebay for hunting for that next game to put my hard-earned dollars toward. Today we feature a game we recently spotlighted on the show, and it's called Xia: Legends of a Drift System. The game is a 3 to 4 player strategy title that enables you to win in a number of ways, as the ultimate goal is to amass the most fame. Whether that's by conquering the final frontier with an iron fist or by becoming the most successful trades dealer in the galaxy, the choice is yours.

One of the most charming parts about Xia is its open-ended gameplay, and I was excited to be able to touch base with Cody Miller, creator of Xia as well as the startup behind it, Far Off Games. Peep our conversation below.

Matt Mueller: Thank you for taking some time out to talk to me about Xia. The game itself looks incredibly detailed, and you can tell a ton of work went into giving each ship and planet/territory its own lore and backstory. This makes it easy for eager role-players like me to take the baton and really make the ship as well as the experience as a whole truly their own from game to game. Why did you decide to give each ship its own story?

Cody Miller:I think it all comes back to Star Wars. The people who made the Falcon and the X-wing really put their heart into those ships. I was enamored by these ships growing up, and that was really the catalyst for Xia. I didn't start out to make any kind of successful board game, I really just wanted to make something for me and my friends. So I invested lots of time in the ships, really trying to flesh them out. Each one is special to me, and I'm really proud of them!

I really wanted each player to feel like they could be the captain of that ship. I wanted them to smell the grimy faux-leather of the crew seats, and to hear the crackling COM when they checked for new missions. I realize most players won't read the stories, or care too much about the setting, but for me it's really important.

MM: One of the pieces I love about Xia is that it goes beyond just killing all the other ships on the map. You can mine, you can trade, and in effect do what Star Wars Galaxies attempted to do and create a small thriving world in one gaming session without necessarily having combat be the sole choice. What inspired that decision?

CM: I really like sandbox games! I love games that put you in charge of your own destiny. And while this isn't an RPG, I wanted to capture that feeling of deciding your own fate in the galaxy. I've heard that games are simply a series of choices linked together. So I wanted every choice you make in Xia to be fun and interesting. I never wanted to force you to do anything. So you can be a pirate, you can be a trader, or you can do whatever crazy thing you can think of. I just set up the rules of play, then you get to do what you like!

MM: I was reading a bit about your hiatus from gaming before the creation of Xia came around. We've all been there at some time or another when you suddenly go "hey, where did that 4 hours go?" and "why is it dark outside now?" and at that point a break is indeed needed. What's the aspect of games you love most? Maybe better phrased as the thing you would miss most about them if you couldn't play them again.

CM: Games are the one medium where you get to make an impact in your experience. Movies, books, television, I love what each one brings, but games are unique in this. I love to make my own story, to write my own destiny, or to make my own legend.

Board games in particular bring a social element that I love. I think many people would say that their favorite thing is to simply "hang out" with their friends. Board games let you hang out and share a fun experience together.

The other thing that distinguishes board games from video games is that it all comes from you, the player. A video game you can pop into any system and it will play the same no matter what. A board game will be different depending on who's playing: What rules do you remember? Or forget? Did you decide on house rules for certain things you don't like? The human element really makes board games different.

MM: Integrating games into family life can be touch and go, especially at the beginning, and while I've struggled with it occasionally, it seems me and my fiancé have been able to find a happy balance, as she enjoys them as well. A game like this can be intimidating, though, for someone newer to the genre. With so many systems in place, how easy is it for someone to get in and get going in the world of Xia? How steep is the learning curve?

CM: I'm hesitant to say one way or the other without knowing your situation. It really is going to depend on your familiarity with games in general. I reference quite a bit of gamer "norms" in Xia. Here's an example:

I had some local kids, middle school, come over and play Xia. I gave them the rulebook and a pretty brief overview, say 4-5 minutes. They started playing and didn't have hardly any trouble. They maybe played about 15% of the game wrong (just little rules, like not applying appropriate amount of damage) but in general they "got" Xia super quickly, and had a great time! Things like Spawn Points, NPCs and free-roam elements were simply taken for granted.

If you don't game at all, then the learning curve could be pretty intimidating. Like if you don't know what an NPC is, that might be hard to figure out. My target audience is people who enjoy games, so I wouldn't recommend Xia as a "gateway game" for someone just getting into tabletop.

If you like sci-fi and gaming, you'll feel right at home in Xia.

MM: While on that subject, how hard from a design perspective is it to maintain a balance of making the game deep and rewarding while simultaneously keeping the game manageable and from being overwhelming, especially to new players?

CM: It's been tremendously hard. Xia has probably gone through 30 or so major revisions. I had so many things I wanted to cram into the game. At first I started out really simple, then I just kept adding and adding.

I was really excited to play-test it with all these new things, and my fiancé came and played with me. She was very gracious, but after about 2 incredibly complex turns, I knew I had to go back to the drawing board.

I started this process I called "crystallizing" where I would take an idea I wanted, say movement, and try to reduce it down to the most simple, fun core. I would ask, "What is it about this system that is fun? What sucks? How can I get rid of the bad part, and keep the good?" I kept doing that over and over with each system through the years. I think that was the hardest part, figuring out the best way to do something, and making it play well!

MM: The thing I'm most giddy over though is the modding system you've implemented into Xia. Being an avid fan of creating backstory's for everything (I have a net named claude that I use in my pathfinder campaign. Yes, I named a net) I love the idea of being able to create my own ship and bring that into the game. Can you go into a bit more detail on how that will work? Obviously copyright violation won't be tolerated, though that won't stop the Starbird Exonerprise creations from popping up. I'm already working on a Micnicholson Talcon, just saying.

CM: I am really excited for the modding to begin. I'm working on some ways to really support that flow. I want people to be out there creating and sharing what they have made, and I want it all to look the same as the print version.

I will be releasing the ship card templates, front and back, as well as the special ability card templates. I work mostly in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, so those will be pre-requisites to making your own cards, but I'm hoping to make it super simple. You'll be able to just type in your information, drop in your ship art and print it out!

The home manufacturing revolution is very interesting to me. I'm a big proponent of 3D printing, and I think it's really going to take off in the next few years. So I'm looking to leverage that technology for the tabletop. I want people designing and sharing miniatures, and printing them off in their own homes! I am also a realist, and I know most people won't have one for a while, which is why I'll be directing people towards Shapeways.com. They have really high quality 3D printers and you can get your design made and sent to you from them! I think people are really going to have fun designing and sharing their starships!

I've got some more ideas on modding, but I can't say anything until I hear back from my manufacturer…

MM: Kudos on the design for the ships themselves by the way. You've got a bit of everything style wise within the 15 that come with the game. Is any one of those a particular favorite?

CM: Ha! Don't make me choose a favorite! I love each one. I actually modeled the original concepts from scratch, one by one out of wood and plastic and glue. That was before I had any dreams of sharing the game with other people. But if I had to choose, I'd say the sleek black one called Cold Phoenix. She was inspired by the old point-and-click adventure game "Full Throttle". The main character had a motorcycle with a crazy exhaust system, and I thought it would be a great idea to have a similar aesthetic but use thrust modules.

MM: Speaking of Design, what was the best part of this experience as a whole? I'm sure this process has been full of potholes so to speak, but what is the one thing you will carry with you going forward in future projects?

CM: Best part of the experience was just letting my imagination go wild with what I could create. I love the process of dreaming up something cool, then trying to figure out exactly how that will work, mechanics wise. Going forward I think I've gotten much better at determining what things will actually play like once they hit the table. So I think my next project wouldn't take quite so long.

MM: As of right now Xia is just about 97% funded. While you have some stretch goals in place already, any thoughts to life after launch? Of course you have the modding built right in, but have there been any thoughts to full on expansions down the line?

CM: I have lots of ideas about what I could do with Xia. But they are all pretty nebulous (ha) at this time. I'm really focused on this project and "finishing strong" so to speak.

MM: I gotcha. Is there something you didn't get to implement into Xia that you would like a chance to do?

CM: Nope! I'm 100% happy with the game. I feel really good about it, I know I've done the best I can, and I think people will really have fun with it!

MM: Well thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me about the game, and I wish you nothing but success! Congratulations again, and I'm excited to see what's next.

Xia has since been 100% funded, and so the first stretch goals are already being reached. Take a look at the new sector called Smugglers Den below. If you interested in funding Xia, or just seeing what all the fuss is about, head over to the official Kickstarter page to check it out.

Amy Adams is out and about promoting her new film Man of Steel. She has been a guest on shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live and Ellen. Each of the shows showed a clip from the film that involves her character Lois Lane. In one, she is confronted by Perry White (Laurence Fishburne), who didn't seem too happy. In the other, she sits down with Superman (Henry Cavill) for a little chat about what the shield on his chest means. I've also included a new TV spot for the movie that features some epic new footage! If there's one TV spot to watch it's this one! It'll pump you up!

Is Benicio Del Toro Playing The Collector in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY?

Earlier this week we learned that Benicio Del Toro was cast in Guardians of the Galaxy. It wasn't revealed at the time who he would be, but we know his character will be "built to be part of future Marvel films." I figured that he would end up playing Thanos, but according to a source from CBM, the actor is actually playing The Collector. It's no secret that The Collector will be in the film, I just originally thought that Lee Pace would be taking on that role.

Ophelia Lovibond is set to play an aide to a near-immortal character, which gathers artifacts and beings in the hopes of saving them from a foretold galactic annihilation. There's no confirmation if this news is true or not, so treat it as a rumor or speculation for now. I can, however, see The Collector showing up in future Marvel films. Do you think Del Toro fits this role? I still see him more as Thanos, but you never know until you know. Maybe he's actually playing The Controller, and they just got the name mixed up with Collector because I can see that happening.

The movie also stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, John C. Reilly, Karen Gillan, and Glenn Close. The movie will be released on August 1st, 2014, and here's a little more info on The Collector:

After Taneleer Tivan's daughter Carina matured and abandoned him and his wife Matani, Matani soon died of mysteries causes. Tivan, who had thought that Matani was as immortal as him, could not resist it. He eventually had a vision seeing powerful things that would rise, determined to destroy the universe. He decided to prevent this from happening and dedicate his life to collect artifacts and living beings throughout the universe to place them out of danger. Then, after the destruction of the universe, he could re-populate it and bequeath the knowledge and cultures from past.

Universal Pictures has released six new TV spots for Illumination Entertainment's Despicable Me 2. Whenever I take my kids to the movies and the trailer for this movie pops up, the children in the theater go wild. The kids love Gru's minions, and I'm sure this movie is going to do very well.

The animated adventure features the return of Gru, the girls, his minions, and a host of new funny characters. This time around Gru will be saving the world instead of trying to destroy it.

Steve Carell is back and has been joined by Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand, and Al Pacino. The movie was directed by Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin, and is set to be released on July 3rd, 2013.

PACIFIC RIM Writer Travis Beacham Shares Details on Movie & Graphic Novel

$

Last week, I had the chance to do a phone interview with Pacific Rim's writer Travis Beacham. He's really sharp, and I can see why Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers had such confidence in his original story. Before the movie comes out, they are releasing Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero, a 112 page graphic novel that is a prologue/prequel like story, which Beacham also wrote.

Unfortunately, due to a technical snafu I was not able to record and transcribe the call. I did take notes, so instead of trying to recreate the conversation I'm just giving you the facts.

  • A story bible was created which covers the history and future of the world; includes lots of designs and characters details that are only hinted at in the movie and graphic novel.
  • The movie takes place 10 years after the graphic novel.
  • Guillermo Del Toro came up with the idea of making the Kaiju silicone based lifeforms, to make them more opaquely alien and an extra challenge for earth scientists to study.
  • Alex Ross did the cover art for Tales From Year Zero.
  • The graphic novel covers many characters with a broader story. The movie by comparison is more streamlined and cinematic.
  • Travis' favorite Jaeger is the Gypsy Danger, which was the first completed design. He likes how it is instantly recognizable, even in silhouette.
  • Tales From Year Zero is the first graphic novel he's written. Even though transitioning to the format was hard, he would love to do another.
  • Travis' favorite Kaiju is one we will not see until the last part of the movie, which has yet to be seen in any trailers or tv spots.
  • He wanted to use the term Mechs until coming across Jaeger which is german for tank or hunter.
  • You see Jaeger academy in the graphic novel.
  • Kaiju was always the term used for the monsters and never changed during development.
  • Travis laughed when I asked hoy he felt about people comparing it to the Power Rangers.
  • The Kaiju in the graphic novel are unused designs from the movie.

You can pick up the graphic novel Pacific Rim: Tales From Year June 18th. Pacific Rim assaults theaters July 12th.

New TV Spot for the Action Thriller WHITE HOUSE DOWN

Columbia Pictures has released a new TV spot for Roland Emmerich's upcoming action thriller White House Down. This could be a fun movie to watch. I haven't been excited for an Emmerich film since Independence Day, but I'm looking forward to this one.

The movie stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Richard Jenkins and James Woods. Here's the synopsis:

Capitol Policeman John Cale (Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.

It's set to hit theaters on June 28th, 2013.

Tentative Plans For SOUTH PARK and FRIDAY THE 13TH Movies

$

It looks like Paramount Pictures has made tentative plans for new South Park and Friday the 13th movies. It's an interesting story on how this all came about. Warner Bros. Pictures actually owns a percentage of these properties, and they wanted a piece of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, which was set up at Paramount. To get in on that Interstellar action, they gave up their rights to co-finance the next Friday the 13th horror film with Paramount, as well as their portion of a future South Park movie. The deal also included an agreement to let Paramount co-finance a to-be-determined A-list Warners property.

Warners obviously wanted in on Interstellar bad. They are banking on it being a huge hit. I'm sure it will pay off for them. This deal allows for Paramount to move forward with plans to make South Park and Friday the 13th movies. It has been hard to get any of these movies made because of the complications of the shared rights. That's no longer an issue now.

Sources have revealed though, "Paramount only enjoys the rights for both titles for the next five years and has that amount of time to make follow-up movies." So I guess we can expect to see these movies happen within the next five years.

AMC has released a new teaser trailer and poster for the final episodes of Breaking Bad. They don't show much, but the AMC voice guy promises "All bad things must come to an end."

The second part of season 5 and the series' last episodes begin on August 11th. I can't wait to see what the fate of Walter White is going to be. It's hard to think he's going to come out of this alive, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Just as a little reminder, I've also included a video of the last scene we saw from the series.

Joss Whedon Vents His Frustration about Lack of Female Superheroes

It's no secret that Joss Whedon loves female heroines. He loves a good female ass kicker and has created some iconic characters such as Buffy, Zoë, and Echo to prove it. Who doesn't like to see a strong female character in the movies?! I do. I know a lot of you do, but for some reason the studios don't think that we do. That's why we don't see more female superhero films, and this pisses Whedon off. During a recent interview with The Daily Beast, the filmmaker vents his frustration saying,

I was raised by a hardcore feminist. I was also much smaller than my brothers and bullied a lot, so I identify with the feeling of helplessness.

Toymakers will tell you they won’t sell enough, and movie people will point to the two terrible superheroine movies that were made and say, You see? It can’t be done. It’s stupid, and I’m hoping The Hunger Games will lead to a paradigm shift. It’s frustrating to me that I don’t see anybody developing one of these movies. It actually pisses me off. My daughter watched The Avengers and was like, “My favorite characters were the Black Widow and Maria Hill,” and I thought, Yeah, of course they were. I read a beautiful thing Junot Diaz wrote: “If you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves.”

What's crazy is, that on top of the characters Whedon has created, we have other female heroines such as Ripley in Aliens and Sarah Connor from Terminator. There's more proof that female heroes work and that people want it. It just needs to be done right. Films like Elektra and Catwoman were just terribly made movies! Had they actually been good, maybe people would have watched them.

Some of Hollywood still has yet to realize that story is king. If you make a great story with interesting characters, people will see your movie.

I guess if anyone can change Hollywood's mind on female heroes, it's going to be Joss Whedon. He's already including more female superheroes in The Avengers 2, now Marvel just needs to give one of them her own film.

Which female superhero would you like to see brought to life on the big screen?
