PACIFIC RIM - 2 New Epic International TV Spots!

$

We've got two new international TV spots for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim for you to check out. Warner Bros. has released a lot of promotional material for this film already, and we still have until July 12th before the movie comes out. They've shown a ton of footage from the film already, and I'm more than sold on it. I imagine we'll be seeing a lot more from the film before it comes out, and that's fine with me! Check out more footage in these new TV spots.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

PORTAL and HALF LIFE Crossover Fan Film

Check out this amusing fan made Portal and Half Life crossover film. YouTuber mikeNgary and his team created this comedic take on the games, which they call "Gordon and Chell Go on a Date." The story is exactly what the title says it is. Neither of the characters talk, which I thought was charming. Here's a synopsis and some background info on the short,

While at Black Mesa or City 17 Gordon Freeman battles Head crabs, Barnacles, and G-Man Chell struggles against Aperture Turrets, test chambers, Wheatly and GLaDOS. Through adverse conditions these two heros are worthy of being Valve's best. But what would happen if these two silent protagonist met? Better yet, what if they went on a date? No matter what each brings to the table no crow bar or Portal gun will prepare you for what happens next.

This is a project several months in the making. After the success of Half-Life: Portal to Black Mesa we wanted to bring together our favorite Half-Life and Portal characters but in a new and interesting way. While we already had several props from our previous Half Life productions this cost $200.

Watch it and let us know what you think of it!

Thanks to GT reader David Cox for the heads up!

Benicio Del Toro Joins GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY!

Benicio Del Toro is the latest addition to the cast of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. There's no word on who exactly he will be playing in the film, but according to the report the character is "built to be part of future Marvel films, which means he has signed a deal with options that put him into multiple movies."

This leads me to speculate that he could end up playing the big bad villain Thanos. Del Toro has always made an awesome villain, and I'm not sure what other characters in this film would be included in multiple Marvel films. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Del Toro joins Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, Karen Gillan and Glenn Close and the movie is set to be released on August 1st, 2014 release.

We last saw Del Toro in Oliver Stone's Savages, and the actor most recently joined the cast of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice.

Who do you think Del Toro could be playing?

Michael Keaton Being Followed by His Superhero Past in BIRDMAN

Here's our first look at Michael Keaton in his new film Birdman. In the photos and video you'll see Keaton being followed by a Birdman superhero, which is an iconic character that Keaton's character played in his past. There's supposed to be a younger looking Keaton behind the mask because he's being haunted by his past, as he tries to make a comeback.

The film is described as "a dark comedy that follows a former actor, who once played an iconic superhero, as he mounts a Broadway play based on a Raymond Carver short story in a bid to reclaim past glory. However, the play’s egotistical leading man threatens to throw everything down the tubes."

Keaton will be playing the comic book movie star trying to regain his credibility. Emma Stone is playing Keaton’s daughter, who is fresh from rehab and now his assistant. Naomi Watts will play an actress in the play, Zach Galifianakis will play the production's conniving producer, and Edward Norton will play the egotistical leading man.

Holy shit! That last episode of Game of Thrones rocked my world, and the world of everyone who watched it. I did not see that ending coming at all, and it left me in utter shock. I won't say anything in case you haven't watched the episode yet, but I will tell you that it was gut wrenching.

The season finale is titled "Mhysa," and it will premiere next Sunday on HBO. I'm very excited to see how they close out the season.

You can discuss the last episode in the comment section below. Go ahead and let the SPOILERS fly!

Stan Lee Spotted on the Set of SPIDER-MAN 2 Filming His Cameo

Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee was spotted on the set of Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 shooting his cameo. It takes place at Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy's (Emma Stone) graduation. I imagine he's reacting to Peter kissing Gwen up on stage, which we also have a picture of.

I loved Lee's cameo in the last Spider-Man movie. I hope there's a little bit more to his cameo than what we're seeing here. We'll just have to wait and see on May 2nd, 2014.

Peter Parker finds, life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen, high school graduation can't come quickly enough. Peter hasn't forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen's father to protect her by staying away – but that's a promise he just can't keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

BATMAN 1972 - Grindhouse Style Batman Art

Check out this incredibly cool collection of 70s style Batploitation art. The series you see here was created by Francesco Francavilla, it's called Batman 1972, and as you can see it takes the Dark Knight into the dark and gritty sex-filled world of grindhouse.

Here's a few things that the artist had to say about his art:

To keep him in "the part", my Batman smokes, wear a leather coat and a turtleneck, and drives a cool 70s BatMobile (an OldsMobile maybe? ;) I still need to decide on brand and model :))

I have also been developing a bit more of that story pitch for a possible Elseworlds. If that ever happens you guys are gonna dig it big time, I promise :)

Check out the art below and let us know what you think of this Batman concept.

Al Pacino Almost Played Han Solo in STAR WARS?!

Can you imagine Al Pacino playing Han Solo in Star Wars? Me neither, but it almost happened! I've never heard of this before, but Pacino himself confirmed the news during An Evening With Al Pacino. The actor said he revealed that he was first offered the part before it went to Harrison Ford. So why didn't he take it? Here's what he said,

It was mine for the taking, but I didn’t understand the script.

I imagine that the script wasn't for everyone, and at the time doing something like that was a gamble. Thankfully it paid off for everyone involved!

I'd be interested in seeing what Pacino's take on the character would have been, but there's no way it would have been as great as what Ford did with the character.

Pacino also said that he turned down leading roles in Pretty Woman and Apocalypse Now. He also went on to describe the Godfather trilogy as "a long, awful, tiring story." Wow.

Do you think Pacino would have made a good Han Solo?

John Leguizamo's SUPER MARIO BROS 20th Anniversary Statement

John Leguizamo has many kind words for fans on the 20th anniversary of the Super Mario Brothers movie. I'm not quite sure which surprises me more though; that Leguizamo has kind words for the film, or that the movie still has fans. All the fond memories he shares hide the darker reports of several people who worked on the film; from the terrible production team to the battle between directors. There are even reports that Leguizamo himself was intoxicated throughout much of the filming of the movie. Perhaps this is why his experience is a bit different than other accounts. Listen to some new and interesting tidbits about the film in the video below.

Check out Winter Soldier's Bionic Arm in CAPTAIN AMERICA 2

We've got some more photos from the set of Captain America: The Winter Soldier featuring Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier. They give us our first look at his bionic arm.

These set photos are cool and all, but I would love to see something official from the studio. They did release some concept art, and his look is basically that, but seeing it brought to life for real is another thing.

I've also included a SPOILER filled description of the scene below the photos and video.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will pick-up where Marvel’s The Avengers left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.

The movie is set to be released on April 4th, 2014.

SPOILER Description:

The Winter Soldier is riding on top of a vehicle and in this vehicle are what appeared to be his personal armed posse. After the vehicle stops the minions get out with machine guns poised to fire and the Winter Soldier gets off the hood of the vehicle.

The Winter Soldier is carrying a grenade launcher and raises is at a vehicle that had both the doubles for the Black Widow and Falcon (or Sam Wilson, whichever way he is called in this film). He let's off a blast. His fellows-in-arms open fire as well. Sadly, the photo taken of the Winter Soldier with the launcher was obscured and blurry.

Our heroes take cover from the blast and gunshots and it appeared they were preparing themselves for some hand-to-hand fighting versus the Winter Soldier and his armed buddies. Winter Soldier and his posse versus the Black Widow and Falcon?!

S.H.I.E.L.D - Whedon Talks About Its Approachability

While still several months away from airing on ABC this fall, information on Marvel’s The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been steadily leaking out. With Joss Whedon shepherding its development fan boy anticipation is very high. The biggest question on everyone's mind is Agent Coulson's death or lack of at the end of the Avengers and how he returns to S.H.I.E.L.D. (Source: ew via superherohype)

Well, it's a very interesting explanation... We're gonna earn it, that's not something you take lightly.

Whedon also shares how the show will work for people who have not viewed the movies:

It's very important to me that the show stands on its own, that people who never saw any of the movies can tune in and enjoy it. We like being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we like having all of the mythos to play off of. But if the show was 'You just missed Tony Stark, wow, he was just here!' it would be the most unsatisfying show ever. We have a new ensemble, apart from Clark, it's all people I've never worked with before, but I'm really excited about them, I'm really proud of them and I think people are just going to want to see them every week.

EW tried to probe J. August Richards' character's identity, to which Whedon responded:

I'm not going to say who he's playing, but he's certainly cranky as you can tell from the trailer. It's great, he came in to guest star and he tears it up. He's got that kind of energy, he's so much fun, and such a lovely guy.

I hope we get a new trailer for the show because the last one was pretty much a teaser.

WHO Watch 2013: Is The World Ready For A Female Doctor?

$
0

Photos by Yeasayer-cosplay

Could it? Should it? Can it?! With a new Doctor having to replace Matt Smith at the end of the year, one has to ask: Can there be a female Doctor? Well why not?! It is the 21st century, and we're all for breaking barriers and what not, but we're talking about a British institution here that spans 50 years. Imagine the outcry if James Bond was changed to Jane Bond?

One has to speculate as to whether or not a gender switch is even canon to the original series. The problem is, everyone argues as to what is canon. If you go by the "Loomb" theory, one has to wonder as to whether this genetic makeup locks exactly whom the Time Lord is prior to regeneration. If you perhaps tend to stick with The Doctor being born to a human mother with a Time Lord father (which I dispute because we would've learned that by now), then who knows honestly. One thing that can be said for certain is that, in the entire television history of Doctor Who, there has not been a cross gender regeneration of any sort by a time lord... although cross species can supposedly happen.

What's certain is that The Doctor cannot choose his regeneration characteristics, which is contradictory to other Time Lords in the series history. The Master was able to regenerate to make himself "younger like The Doctor", and Romana (from the classic Who) was able to shuffle between options of bodies between regenerations. So if The Doctor did become female, it would be completely random and not his choice.

This brings up the can of worms of whether the Doctor's feelings would carry on from his entire life as a male --awkward encounters with former companions (and clones) -- and a whole event that itself would become the entire focus of the season. Every episode that would bring back a character would be their reaction to the switch and yada yada, which I feel would drag down the events of the show. Once you powered past it though there would be no issue and I could see it being business as usual going about in the Tardis. Would it be neat if it happened? Do I think it would happen?

I really don't see them taking it that direction, under any circumstance. If the Doctor can regenerate into hundreds of different types of species, variations, and become totally unrecognizable then why has he spawned as a middle aged male for 11 incarnations? It's safe, it's simple, and it's been done before. With the series at the height of its popularity world wide, I am more apt to see a change in ethnicity than gender. If only because you're playing with fire on a tried and true formula. Am I alone in thinking this is an impossibility?

Keep up with GeekTyrant throughout WHO Watch 2013 for all the latest discussions, news, and speculation about the new Doctor. Also feel free to email us your thoughts!

New Story Details on Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR!

Not much is known about Christopher Nolan's next film project Interstellar. Up until this point all we've know about it is that it's based on the scientific theories developed by Cal Tech physicist Kip Thorne and that the story follows a group of explorers who travel through a wormhole. Thanks to AICN, we now have a few more story details. These come from an older draft of the script so there might be some details that have been changed since Nolan has been working on it.

They say that the movie is set in the future "in a time where crops are dying, food is scarce, governments and nations have collapsed, NASA is gone and the 20th Century is to blame. A mysterious rip in Space Time opens up and it is up to the remnants of the now extinct NASA organization to explore it and offer up a chance at salvation for Earth." The site goes on to say that it gets a lot more complicated, but they don't offer up any other details on what those complications are.

As of right now, the movie stars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, and Anne Hathaway. Interstellar is set to be released on November 7th, 2014.

Stunning Concept Trailer for the Sci-Fi Film KOYAKATSI

You've got to check out this visually stunning trailer for a film concept called  Koyakatsi. The trailer was directed by Ayoub Qanir, and I want to see more! It seems like it was inspired by artwork from Heavy Metal magazine. Here's a plot summary,

A young scientist and a military doctor team-up to investigate a series of unidentifiable, non-biological attacks. What they discover is a threat far greater than they could have ever imagined.

It looks and sounds like it could make for and great movie. Watch the trailer and let us know what you think of it.

Penelope Cruz Rumored to Be Next BOND Girl

Now that it looks like Sam Mendes is coming back to direct the 24th and 25th James Bond films, let the rumors begin on who will be the next Bond girl. According to Yahoo! Movies UK, Spanish star Penelope Cruz is set to be the next Bond girl, which at 40 years-old, would make her the oldest Bond girl yet.

There's no confirmation of this, but according to their source, "The producers have tried to get Penelope before, but she has never been available because of other commitments. The discussions have been going on for some time, and they are working out the contract details now."

The actress is currently pregnant with her second child. The source goes on to address that issue saying,

She got back into shape fast after the first baby and will no doubt regain her figure quickly this time. She’ll be a great Bond girl. Bond girls are always brainy as well as sexy, and that’s totally Penelope.

To be honest, I've never been a big fan of Cruz, so I'm not really all that excited if she is indeed being considered. What do you all think about the possibility of Cruz being the next Bond girl?

Can You Quote an Entire Movie?

$

I read an article over the weekend mentioning that Leonardo DiCaprio can pretty much quote the entire film Menace II Society. Movie quotes are like a second language to movie geeks; it's how we communicate with each other. However, reciting an entire film requires more than a casual viewing.

I can quote Braveheart word for word. I can act out the whole movie for you and do the voices of the characters, accents and all. It's one of my many talents. I can probably perform a one man show of the Mel Gibson epic if I wanted to. I've seen the movie hundreds of times. It still holds my record of the number of times I've seen a single movie in theaters. I saw Braveheart in theaters 12 times. I also have a friend that can perfectly quote Adam Sandler's Billy Madison, then there's our editor Eli who can get pretty close with This is Spinal Tap, and then there's our writer Billy who can take us on a journey through Jurassic Park.

Are there any movies that you can quote in their entirety? How many times did you have to see that movie to do it?

Hugh Jackman To Continue As Wolverine?

Wolverine is practically immortal, and ages at a very slow rate; unlike his human actor counter part Hugh Jackman. At age 44, Jackman has talked about how hard it is to keep up the Wolverine physic and build as he ages. One day another actor is going to be Wolverine. But is that day soon upon us? Jackman spoke to EW and said:

"I wasn’t even sure after the first [stand-alone] film if I would do another."

"I won’t say never, because I’m still loving it. But there would have to be a pretty compelling reason"

There are two ways I read into those comments. A) If the fans still want me I'll keep doing it. B) Give me more money.

I for one want Hugh in many more films as Wolverine. Let's hope the newest film finally delivers the Wolverine movie fans have been dreaming of.

New Photos of Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Here are a few new photos from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past featuring Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. The photos below were taken in-between takes. I've also included a couple of new photos of James McAvoy.

The movie also stars Hugh JackmanIan McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Nicolas Hoult, Omar Sy, Halle Berry, Daniel Cudmore, Fan Bingbing and Boo Boo Stewart. The movie will be released on July 18th, 2014.

The film is based on the comic book storyline "Days of Future Past," which ran in Uncanny X-Men #141 and 142 back in 1981 during Chris Claremont and John Byrne's run and introduced the idea of an alternate future for Marvel's mutants that grew out of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants killing an important senator, leading to a future where all mutants are hunted by Sentinels.
