1981 STAR WARS Prequel Map - Lucas' Different Take on The Universe

$

Here's some cool behind the scenes Star Wars information that you might want to know! Back in 1981, George Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan, Richard Marquand, and Howard Kazanjian mapped out the Star Wars prequel story and the fall of Anakin Skywalker during a story conference for what was then titled Revenge of the Jedi

Return of the Jedi turns 30 years old soon, and a transcript from that meeting was posted on the Huffington Post, which is an excerpt from J.W. Rinzler's upcoming book The Making of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

There's a lot of great little details here. There's stuff we saw brought to life in the prequels and other things that ended up  being changed. For example, Lucas goes through and breaks down the relationship between the Emperor and Vader, which is essentially beat-for-beat from what we saw in the prequels.

He also explains how Yoda is not really a full fledge Jedi Knight. He was originally never supposed to fight. He was supposed to be more of a guru and a teacher. What's funny is Kasdan was kind of in shock by the news. I couldn't help but laugh at his reaction.

The Force is actually explained differently. At one point, the Force was something anyone could have. It wasn't based on a person's midi-chlorian count. It was something anyone could tap into, Lucas explains it as being like Yoga.

This is a really entertaining and eye opening read, and you can check it out below!

REVENGE OF THE JEDI STORY CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT, JULY 13 to JULY 17, 1981—SUMMARY
Participants: George Lucas, Richard Marquand, Lawrence Kasdan, and Howard Kazanjian
Location: Park Way House
Note: Many of the ideas here are conceptual only and should not be considered as canon in the Star Wars saga.

THE STORY OF ANAKIN

Lucas: Anakin Skywalker starting hanging out with the Emperor, who at this point nobody knew was that bad, because he was an elected official.

Kasdan: Was he a Jedi?

Lucas: No, he was a politician. Richard M. Nixon was his name. He subverted the senate and finally took over and became an imperial guy and he was really evil. But he pretended to be a really nice guy. He sucked Luke’s father into the dark side.

Kasdan: The Force was available to anyone who could hook into it?

Lucas: Yes, everybody can do it.

Kasdan: Not just the Jedi?

Lucas: It’s just the Jedi who take the time to do it.

Marquand: They use it as a technique.

Lucas: Like yoga. If you want to take the time to do it, you can do it; but the ones that really want to do it are the ones who are into that kind of thing. Also like karate. Also another misconception is that Yoda teaches Jedi, but he is like a guru; he doesn’t go out and fight anybody.

Kasdan: A Jedi Master is a Jedi isn’t he?

Lucas: Well, he is a teacher, not a real Jedi. Understand that?

Kasdan: I understand what you’re saying, but I can’t believe it; I am in shock.

Lucas: It’s true, absolutely true, not that it makes any difference to the story.

Kasdan: You mean he wouldn’t be any good in a fight?

Lucas: Not with Darth Vader he wouldn’t.

Kasdan: I accept it, but I don’t like it.

Lucas: Well, anyway, Luke’s father gets subverted by the Emperor. He gets a little weird at home and his wife begins to figure out that things are going wrong and she confides in Ben, who is his mentor. On his missions through the galaxies, Anakin has been going off doing his Jedi thing and a lot of Jedi have been getting killed—and it’s because they turn their back on him and he cuts them down. The president is turning into an Emperor and Luke’s mother suspects that something has happened to her husband. She is pregnant. Anakin gets worse and worse, and finally Ben has to fight him and he throws him down into a volcano and Vader is all beat up.

Now, when he falls into the pit, his other arm goes and his leg and there is hardly anything left of him by the time the Emperor’s troops fish him out of the drink. Then when Ben finds out that Vader has been fished out and is in the hands of the Empire, he is worried about it. He goes back to Vader’s wife and explains that Anakin is the bad guy, the one killing all the Jedi.

When he goes back his wife, Mrs. Skywalker has had the kids, the twins, so she has these two little babies who are six months old or so. So everybody has to go into hiding. The Skywalker line is very strong with the Force, so Ben says, “I think we should protect the kids, because they may be able to help us right the wrong that your husband has created in the universe.” And so Ben takes one and gives him to a couple out there on Tatooine and he gets his little hideout in the hills and he watches him grow. Ben can’t raise Luke himself, because he’s a wanted man. Leia and Luke’s mother go to Alderaan and are taken in by the king there, who is a friend of Ben’s. She dies shortly thereafter and Leia is brought up by her foster parents. She knows that her real mother died.

Kasdan: She does know that?

Lucas: Yes, so we can bring that out when Luke is talking to her; she can say that her mother died when “I was two years old.”

I can't wait to get this book so I can read more!

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - Worst Extra or Smartest Henchman?

Youtube user Jazzmanthemusician has unveiled a pretty funny mistake in Batman: The Dark Knight Rises that's making its rounds on the internet after initially being posted in November. The video shows a guy on the far left running up to attack Batman, stopping, and then falling to the ground before being struck! Pretty obvious error on the part of the extra and production team not to catch it!

Although if you wanted to spin this as an homage, this totally reminded me of one of my favorite scenes from Batman: The Animated Series. Watch both clips below.

TEN THOUSAND HOURS - A Great Short Film about Naive Ambition

Ten Thousand Hours is a fantastic and well made short film directed by Joe Sill. This is the same guy that directed the sci-fi short Expo. This new movie isn't a sci-fi film. It's not an action film. It's a solid drama that tells a story about naive ambition. It follows a young architect who "falls from grace with an ambitious design that spirals him into a world of ego and obsession."

The film is a character focused piece that was kickstarted and made on a budget of $6,500. Here's the synopsis:

JACK is an eager young assistant at a top architecture firm. When a colleague's pitch for a prestigious client fails, Jack steps out of line to propose an impromptu design that impresses everybody. He commissions the firm’s biggest project - and also becomes its architect.

We follow Jack into a downward spiral of EGO, overcommitment, and obsession as we watch his ambitious design overwhelm him. He assumes that he can do it all - but he ultimately hurts those closest to him.

There's been a lot of talk recently about the Wrath of Khan since Star Trek Into Darkness was released. There's been a lot of comparisons between the two films. Some people didn't like what Star Trek Into Darkness did, then there are others like me who thoroughly enjoyed it. Do you know what we can all agree on though? That this t-shirt mashup of Wrath of Khan and Charlie Brown is awesome! The design is titled "Khaan!" It was created by Blueswade on Redbubble. You can purchase a shirt for $22.80.

Full Trailer for Marvel's AVENGERS ASSEMBLE

Ugh. Here's the full trailer for Marvel's new animated series Avengers Assemble, and it just looks like an all-around bad show. You can actually watch the first episode on iTunes for free by clicking here. I wasn't able to sit through the whole thing. I found it annoying. I'm not a big fan of the tone, dialogue, and poor animation. I'm not sure why they didn't use the same team that brought us Earth's Mightiest Heroes because that was a fun show. My kids even enjoyed watching it, but they didn't take to Avengers Assemble either. They lost interest faster than I did, so Marvel is obviously doing something wrong because it didn't hit with my little fan girls, and it didn't hit with me either.

An animated series parallel to the record-breaking blockbuster movie Marvel's The Avengers, "Avengers Assemble" sees Iron Man leading the team of mightiest heroes – Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow and newcomer Falcon – who combine their powers to battle threats no single hero could overcome. When the Avengers assemble, evil doesn't stand a chance. The voice cast includes: Adrian Pasdar ("Heroes") as Iron Man, Fred Tatasciore ("Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness") reprising his role as Hulk, Roger Craig Smith (Wreck-It Ralph) as Captain America, Travis Willingham ("Shelf Life") as Thor, Troy Baker ("Ultimate Spider-Man") as Hawkeye, Laura Bailey ("The Super Hero Squad Show") as Black Widow and Bumper Robinson ("The Game") as Falcon. Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau and Steven T. Seagle of Man of Action Studios ("Ben 10," "Generator Rex") will serve as executive producers.

In the first part of the special preview, Captain America is apparently destroyed by Red Skull, so Iron Man re-unites the team to try and avenge his friend and stop Red Skull’s army. In the second part, Red Skull steals Tony Stark’s armor, and the Avengers must galvanize the team to stop him and M.O.D.O.K. from destroying New York City.

A one-hour preview of the new animated series will premiere on Disney XD, Sunday, May 26th at 11 a.m. ET. The show will officially premiere on Sunday, July 7th at 11 a.m. ET as part of the “Marvel Universe” block.

The Death Star Destroys the Enterprise in San Francisco - Fan Video

It looks like the Empire rebuilt the Death Star again, and they are targeting the U.S.S. Enterprise. The video features the Enterprise flying around San Francisco, and the Empire is taking pop shots at it. Not much damage is done until the Death Star unleashes it's green death ray fury on the ship.

This turned out to be an incredibly cool Star Wars vs. Star Trek fan video. It comes from IGN, and here's a little backstory...

After Star Trek IV, the crew of the Enterprise needed more whales, so they came back to San Francisco again, except this time it's an alternate universe where Reagan's Star Wars defense initiative from the 80's is coming to fruition as the Death Star nears completion (superlaser already fully operational). Star Wars is our military.

I love this, and I'm sure you'll get a kick out of it as well. Check it out!

Is JURASSIC PARK 4 Actually Going to be a Reboot?

A couple of weeks ago, Universal Pictures put Jurassic Park 4 production on hold. There was no solid reason given at the time, but apparently director Colin Trevorrow is writing a new version of the script with Derek Connolly. There were reports that their ideas might have been too big to fit the current production timeline. We haven't really heard much else since the production was shut down.

Franchise star Sam Neill seems to be under the impression that the film will undergo a complete reboot instead of a sequel. In a recent interview with Dominion Post (via Collider), he confirms he won't be a part of the film and says, "I'm told it's a big reboot, a total re-jig."

This statement is completely contrary to everything else we've heard and seen. Even producer Frank Marshall has said it will "definitely be a sequel," which is what I'm hoping for. I don't want to see the movie remade, it doesn't need to be, it still holds up.

Personally, I don't think Neill knows what he's talking about. He's not involved with the film, and I seriously doubt he follows this stuff as closely as we internet movie people do. The guy is too busy running his Winery and acting. But ya' never know! Maybe he's right, and the sequel is now being retooled as a remake. We'll find out soon enough.

Apocalyptic Red-Band Spot for THIS IS THE END - Tripping

Sony Pictures has released an amusing red-band spot for the apocalyptic comedy This is the End, which stars Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Michael Cera, Jason Segel, Emma Watson, and a bunch of other cameos.

The latest spot features a good amount of new footage featuring a monstrous Devil, Hill being possessed by a demon, and more. I'm thinking that this might end up being one of the funniest movies of the year. I've been hearing nothing but good things about it.

This is the End comes to theaters on June 14th, 2013!

The comedy This Is The End follows six friends trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside. Eventually, they are forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship and redemption.

3 New TV Spots for WORLD WAR Z

World War Z looks like it's going to be an entertaining action-packed zombie flick. I really hope it doesn't end up being a turd of a film because that's definitely a possibility with all of the issues that it had getting made.

Marc Forster directed the movie, and it stars Brad PittMireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, and Matthew Fox. The movie is set to be released on June 21st, 2013.

The movie is based on Max Brooks' best-selling novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, the movie revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.

Hilarious Red-Band Trailer for WE'RE THE MILLERS

Warner Bros. has released a hilarious red-band trailer for another one of their summer comedies We're The Millers, which stars Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston. The story follows a group of people who come together as a made-up family to smuggle drugs. This could end up being a great summer comedy! This trailer sold me, and it's not because Aniston strips down to her bra and panties... she does look pretty damn good though.

The movie was directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, and it also stars Emma Roberts, Nick Offerman, Kathryn Hahn, Will Poulter, and Ed Helms.

David Burke (Jason Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. Stealing his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms). In order to wipe the slate clean—and maintain a clean bill of health—David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston) and wannabe customer Kenny (Will Poulter), and the tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen Casey (Emma Roberts), he devises a foolproof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the “Millers” are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend that is sure to end with a bang.

The movie is set to be released on August 9th, 2013.

Francis Ford Coppola Directing New Italian-American Saga

$

Francis Ford Coppola is an incredible director and has made some great films in his career, but he's best known for bringing The Godfather to life. He's now looking to develop another Italian-American film saga.

He will write and direct the untitled film, which will chronicle an Italian-American family and span from the 1930s to the 1960s. This is about the same timeframe that The Godfather covered. The script has been described as "a coming-of-age story that focuses on a boy and girl in their late teens."

That's basically all we know at this point. Coppola has set up production offices on the Paramount Pictures lot, but there's no word on if the studio is involved with the production.

Coppola has gone through an experimental phase of filmmaking with the 2011 horror thriller Twixt. Even though I thought the movie was terrible, it's still good to experiment and try new things. The filmmaker hasn't touched on the Italian-American themes since The Godfather III in 1990. We know he's good at it, so maybe this will end up being a great film project. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of it.

AMC Doesn't Want THE WALKING DEAD to Ever End

The Walking Dead series is obviously doing very well for AMC because they never want to see the show end. When series creator Robert Kirkman created the comic, he envisioned it as a "never ending zombie story," and it seems AMC is envisioning the same thing for the series, which is pretty freakin' awesome!

AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan recently told THR,

We hope that zombies live forever and we’ve just begun to find out what the post-apocalyptic world is like. So that we’ll be sitting here at the Barclays conference in 2022 discussing the fact that Walking Dead is not over.

The Walking Dead is currently in production of the fourth season in Atlanta Georgia. If we see this series continue, we could see Carl grow up in the series... if he doesn't end up being killed off somewhere down the line. It's a cool prospect to think about.

Even though it probably won't happen, what do you think of the prospect of this series living on forever? I could see it going for 15-20 seasons.

Zac Efron Cast in True Crime Drama NARC

Zac Efron hasn't made a good film since... well, he's never made a good film. At least not to my knowledge. He's been searching out these hard, edgy films to star in like The Paperboy and The Lucky One, but they've all ended up being mediocre or crap. None of them has shown me that Efron can actually act.

According to The Wrap, The High School Musical star has been cast in the lead of Fox’s true-crime drama Narc, which is described as a "collegiate take on Donnie Brasco." Garrett Meyer is writing the screenplay, which follows a which follows "a frat president and lacrosse captain who gets busted with cocaine. To avoid jail time, he agrees to become an undercover informant for the police and begins ratting out individuals higher up the criminal ladder."

Efron is also attached to star in films such as the JFK assassination drama Parkland, the romantic comedy Are We Officially Dating?, and the action thriller called Autobahn. So he may be not be the best actor, but he's still managing to find work.

Do you like Efron as an actor? If so... why?

We have yet to see a trailer for Tom Hiddleston's vampire film Only Lovers Left Alive, but we do have a clip from the movie for you to watch! The clip features Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton reuniting after what must have been a very long time. The two actors definitely look the part of aged vampires.

Set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier, an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover. Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister. Can these wise but fragile outsiders continue to survive as the modern world collapses around them?

The film was directed by Jim Jarmusch and also stars Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, and Anton Yelchin. There's no release date for the film yet. If you want more information on the movie click here

Kaplan has also worked with Abrams on Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and other classic films such as Fight Club and Blade Runner.

Vin Diesel recently revealed that Fast and Furious 7 would take the franchise back to Tokyo and the Middle East. It looks like it's also going back to where the whole story began... Los Angeles. Here's what he said,

I told the Universal people there was no way we were not having a Los Angeles premiere. One other thing: For ‘Fast and Furious 7,’ we are bringing it back to Los Angeles!

Good! I love L.A.! It was recently confirmed that Jason Statham will be playing the villain in the film, and make sure to stay after the credits for Fast and Furious 6!

Saw and Insidious filmmaker James Wan is set to direct Fast & Furious 7, and it's scheduled to open in July of 2014.

Final Fantasy VII stars a vast amount of memorable characters, but there are few who capture hearts like Tifa Lockhart. She can hold her own with anybody, and doesn't need an 80lb sword to do it. Evidently the cosplay community loves her too, as there were tons of options to choose from, including many different takes. Without further ado, let's take a look at some of the standouts.

Heart-Pounding New Trailer for RUSH

$

Universal Pictures has released an intense new trailer for Ron Howard's Formula One racing film Rush. This movie looks fantastic! For me, the last truly great film that Howard made was Cinderella Man back in 2005, between then and now everything he's done has been mediocre, but it looks like Rush is going to put him back up into great movie territory again.

The movie is based on a true story that focuses on the intense rivalry of two drivers, James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl). As you'll see, it's going to be incredibly exciting!

RUSH is an upcoming biographical action-drama film directed by two-time Oscar winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon), who teams once again with fellow two-time Oscar nominee, writer Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen), about the 1976 Formula One season and the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda.

The film stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives. Olivia Wilde (TRON: Legacy) and Alexandra Maria Lara (The Reader) also star in the film.

Rush opens up in theaters on September 20th, 2013. Hope you enjoy the latest trailer for the film!

Elijah Wood is a MANIAC in This New Trailer

Elijah Wood plays an insane serial killer in this upcoming horror thriller called Maniac. The movie was directed by Franck Khalfoun from a script written by Alex Aja and Gregory Levasseur. The movie is shot from the point of view of the serial killer, and not only does it look like a solidly disturbing film, but I've been hearing good things about it as well. Wood has got the crazy eyes, so he seems like the perfect choice to play a serial killer.

Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt. Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank's obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.

The film is a remake of William Lustig's 1980 cult film, which I have to admit I haven't seen. The thriller is set for a limited theatrical release and VOD debut on June 21st.
