Whedon on AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D and its Connection to Marvel Films

As you've seen in the trailer for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., there is a kind of a connection to Marvel's cinematic universe. It's just not clear how big that connection will be. In a recent interview with TV Fanatic, Joss Whedon talks about the TV series and how it will fit in with the films...

Everything has to push 'character' forward, including action. We don't want 'spectacle' characters, we want some spectacle that addresses character. We always want the two to mix.

We're absolutely on top of all the movies. We never contradict, replicate - we will be flowing in between them, maybe occasionally we'll throw something in that foreshadows [or] echoes but we're very much beholden to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It'll be fun to see what kind of elements and Easter eggs from the films they end up throwing in the series. It will be another element that will keep audiences entertained and engaged with the show. Who knows, maybe one day we'll start seeing bigger movie superheroes pop in for a cameo.

RED 3 is Moving Into Development

Red 2 isn't even going to be released in theaters until July 19th, but Summit Entertainment isn't going to wait around to see how it does before they start developing Red 3. The studio already hired back Jon and Erich Hoeber to write a third installment of the action franchise. They are the same guys who wrote the first two films. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian will be back to produce the film as well.

I loved the first film, and I'm excited to see the sequel. It's looks pretty amazing. It's so early one that there's no information on what the story will be about, but I imagine it will involve the same core cast that includes Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Mary Louise-Parker.

The films are based on the comic book mini-series by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner and revolved around the conceit of over-the-hill operatives who still know how to kick ass.

We'll have more deals for you when they become available.

Luke Evans Talks about THE CROW Reboot

Earlier this month, it was reported that Fast and Furious 6 villain Luke Evans will be playing Eric Draven in The Crow remake set up over at Relativity Media. It seems like a lot of fans would have preferred to see Tom Hiddleston, who was up for the part at one point,  in the role. Of course, fans of the original film don't want to see The Crow remade at all. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do to stop it. The only way that you can drive this point home to Hollywood is to not see the movie when it's released. Only if it doesn't succeed will they admit to making a mistake, because if it makes money they're going to keep doing it.

During a recent interview with Empire, Evans is asked about the reboot, and this is what he had to say...

He doesn't reveal much, but he does say it has a really great script, and he's excited to work with its director, F. Javier Gutierrez. As you can see, Evans is also very positive and confident about the project.

Do you think you could be open minded and enjoy a re-imagining like Evans is asking?

Michael B. Jordan Addresses FANTASTIC FOUR Human Torch Rumor

A couple weeks ago, a rumor started going around the Friday Night Lights and Chronicle star Michael B. Jordan would be playing the Human Torch in director Josh Trank's reboot of Fantastic Four. The two worked together on Chronicle, so it doesn't seem like it would be out of the question that something like this would happen.

When the rumor first hit, it seemed like a lot of people thought he would be a good choice for the role and that a lot of fans would embrace it. In a recent interview, Jordan was asked about the rumor, and this is what he had to say:

Nothing is real. Everyone knows we (he and Trank) are good friends. It's something that if it happened I would be ecstatic.

Jordan went on to address the racial difference of the character, which not many people seemed to have issues with in the first place.

Things change and time goes on, it's 2013 right now. I'm all about breaking barriers and changing stuff. We've got a black president. Times have changed. The characteristics of the Human Torch are his name is Johnny Storm, he's charismatic, and he's a playboy. That's it. You know what I'm saying? That's all there is.

Jordan then talks about the support he's been getting, and he's ready to embrace the possibility.

I get a lot of support and a lot of love from comic-book geeks. I love it. If you go looking for negative things you're going to find it. You never go through a girl's phone. If you're looking for trouble, you're going to find it. But we'll see where this all goes.

It doesn't seem like he's counting out the possibility. I'm sure there are talks going on. It's just not set in stone yet.

New JFK Conspiracy Film with DiCaprio, De Niro and David O. Russell

Another movie based on a conspiracy behind the assassination President John F. Kennedy is going into development. The movie will be called Legacy of Secrecy, and it will be written and directed by David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook).

The movie is being set up at Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company by his dad George DiCaprio. Apparently, the movie will "blow the lid off of what really happened in Dallas in November 1963." It's looking like DiCaprio and Robert De Niro could star in the film as well. The movie is based on a book of the same name written by Lamar Waldron and Thom Hartmann.

The news comes from showbiz411, who says it follows "the saga of FBI informant Jack Laningham. DeNiro would play Mafia kingpin Carlos Marcello, who confided to Langingham that he ordered the hit on Kennedy. Marcello died in 1993. But back during the days following the assassination, at least a dozen of Marcello’s associates were questioned by the FBI. Nevertheless, Marcello’s name never appeared in the Warren Report."

They go on to say that Jack is alive and that he “knows everything,” and “he’s never spoken to anyone.” Apparently the news was all confirmed by his son Craig van Laningham. I assume Jack is going to help with the development of the film.

I have no doubt this will make for a very interesting film. The JFK presidency has always fascinated me, so this is something I'll be looking forward to seeing. It's definitely got an amazing team of talent interested in making it.

Here's a description of the book:

UPDATED WITH DRAMATIC NEW REVELATIONS! The trade paperback has three new chapters, an expanded photo-document section, and updated text throughout, including the completed story of how three powerful Mafia bosses used John and Robert Kennedy’s top-secret plan of staging a coup against Fidel Castro to murder JFK. Documented from the National Archives for the first time is Watergate burglar Bernard Barker's decades-long work for the Mafia, even Barker’s time aiding the CIA with the coup plan. Barker sold out the coup plan to his mob bosses helping to assassinate JFK, and forcing US officials previously involved with Barker to withhold key information from the Warren Commission. This cloud of secrecy surrounding JFK’s assassination allowed two men who confessed to playing roles in JFK's murder to be free and aid in the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in 1968. The trade paperback also contains important new information about the FBI informant who obtained the JFK assassination confession of godfather Carlos Marcello, which the Bureau kept secret for twenty years.

IRON MAN 3 - Cool Mansion Attack Animatic

I enjoy seeing pre-production work and concept art for films. This kind of stuff plays a huge part in developing a film, yet it's stuff a lot of people don't really think about. Artist Federico D'Alessandro created this amazing animatic for Iron Man 3 that envisioned how the epic mansion attack would play out. What's cool about this is the animatic is almost exactly what we ended up seeing in the movie, and it was done way before they started shooting. Here's a statement from the artist in which he talks about his experience making it.

I worked on IRON MAN 3 as the Lead Storyboard Artist and Animatics Supervisor, and during that time I created a lot of fun animatics. This was my favorite one, and was translated to the final film pretty closely!

I met with Shane Black very early during pre-production to discuss this scene. Even in the early stages, the sequence seemed gargantuan. So much needed to happen in a relatively short amount of time, and I knew that this would be my most challenging animatic yet. The beauty of the way Shane works is that he’s not only a brilliant storyteller but he’s very open to other ideas, and during my time on the show he trusted me as a creative collaborator. I wanted to reward the freedom he gave me and that led to some of my best work I’ve done for Marvel yet. After a few story meetings with Shane where we hashed out a lot of beats together, he gave me control of the scene and I went to work figuring out how to turn this sequence into a visual spectacle.

Creating this animatic was a technically challenging process as I was trying a lot of new techniques not normally found in animatics. The storytelling had to be tight, the energy frenetic, and the action clear. One of the things I focused on was a “good news, bad news” stacking of the beats…Tony gets out of a bind, only to be faced with another challenge which he overcomes but then he is immediately dealt a fresh problem. As much as anything else, Tony needed to outthink his attackers.

Thankfully Shane and Marvel were ecstatic with the end result. By the time the animatic was approved by all the powers-that-be, were still many months away from shooting, but I think having this kind of scene locked down so early allowed Marvel to carefully strategize all the necessary elements to make this very complex scene come to life. In the end, they ended up following my animatic almost shot-to-shot, so seeing that on screen was an amazingly gratifying experience.

Now check out the animatic!

Emily Blunt Cast in Disney's INTO THE WOODS

Emily Blunt (Looper) has been cast in Disney's big screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Into the Woods. It was recently announced that Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine are in discussions to join the film which also stars Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep.

The movie will be directed Rob Marshall, and the story follows "a childless baker and his wife who attempt to lift a family curse by journeying into the woods to confront the witch that put the spell on them. Along the way, they encounter Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk’s Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, and other classic fairy tale characters."

Blunt is set to play the baker’s wife in the story, which it the female lead. Streep is playing the vain and charismatic Witch, while Depp is going to play "a hungry and sexy variation of a fairy tale wolf." If Gyllenhaal and Pine are cast in the film they would play the musical’s two main princes, "Cinderella’s Prince and Rapunzel’s Prince, brothers who are pompous and self-absorbed."

Amazon Cancels ZOMBIELAND Series - "Hated out of Existence"

Amazon has unsurprisingly cancelled their Zombieland series. I watched the pilot episode and, unfortunately, it was just a poorly made series. So we won't be getting a full series, which I'm fine with. It's a show I won't miss.

Zombieland co-writer/executive producer Rhett Reese took to Twitter to vent a bit upon hearing the news of the series' demise, stating...

Our Zombieland series will not be moving forward on Amazon. Sad for everyone involved. I'll never understand the vehement hate the pilot received from die-hard Zombieland fans. You guys successfully hated it out of existence. Anyway, we did our best, and we're very proud of our team.

Fans hated it out of existence? I wouldn't blame the fans for hating it out of existence. I would blame the team of people that made a mediocre show. It could have been a great series, but it wasn't. It had a couple of fun moments, but nothing that would make me want to sit through a full season. I was even looking forward to this.

What did you think of the Zombieland series? Do you care that Amazon cancelled it?

Brian Grazer says FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Movie is Moving Forward

As a fan of the hit NBC series Friday Night Lights, I'd love to see a movie get made. Producer Brian Grazer recently did an interview in which he confirmed that they are "absolutely moving forward" on a Friday Night Lights movie.

We made a terrific feature with Pete Berg, turned it into a terrific TV series and will now make a movie from that series. I’m not sure such a thing has been done before.

He then went on to say that they might look into crowdfunding to help get financing for the film. Deadline reports, "they will likely use crowdfunding to directly tap the rabid fan base of that drama for some of the budget."

Berg, who wrote and directed the original 2004 movie and developed the TV show, has been trying to get this film off the ground for some time now. I guess it's at the point where they are looking to pull the trigger. I think it would be even better if they just brought the show back to life, but I'll be happy with a movie.

The Astronomical Cost of Building the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE

Ever wonder how much is would cost to build the U.S.S. Enterprise in real life? Well, Gizmodo did a great detailed breakdown of the costs of the raw materials used, staff, Holodeck, photon torpedos, and more. The total cost ended up coming in at an astronomically ridiculous  $478,947,711,160.

So that's never going to happen, but it's a fun bit of information. Make sure to head over to Gizmodo for the full breakdown to see how they came up with that number. It's sad that we'll never see a real enterprise get made.

The closest we ever got was the life size replica hotel and casino that was almost built in Las Vegas. You can find more info on that here.

FAST AND FURIOUS 7 will Take the Franchise Back to Tokyo!

I think I'm one of the few people that absolutely loved Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift. That movie was a lot of fun, and it looks like the seventh film in the franchise will be headed back to Tokyo Japan!

The information comes from Vin Diesel himself who said, "We're definitely going back home, as you know from seeing Fast & Furious 6. We will have a stint in Tokyo and there is the Middle East next, that could be very interesting."

Just to clarify the Fast and Furious franchise timeline, Tokyo Drift actually takes place after the events of parts four, five, and six. Vin Diesel has a cameo at the very end of Tokyo Drift, and that cameo brought him back into the franchise. That could very well be the kickoff point for the upcoming seventh film.

It was recently confirmed that Jason Statham will be playing the villain in the film, and make sure to stay after the credits for Fast and Furious 6!

Saw and Insidious filmmaker James Wan is set to direct Fast & Furious 7, and it's scheduled to open in July of 2014.

Joel Edgerton Joins Johnny Depp in BLACK MASS

$

Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, Zero Dark Thirty) is set to co-star alongside Johnny Depp in the Barry Levinson-directed crime thriller Black Mass.

The story revolves around mob boss Whitey Bulger, a ruthless Boston kingpin who inspired movie characters such as the one Jack Nicholson played in The Departed and the one Pete Postlethwaite played in The Town. The movie is based on the 2001 Dick Lehr/Gerald O’Neill New York Times bestseller Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob.

Bulger was also an FBI informant so he could help discreetly take down a rival gang. In the end, the tables were turned on him, and he was double crossed and prosecuted by the Feds, along with his partner in crime and the original FBI agent working with him. Edgerton will play John Connolly, the "FBI agent and childhood pal of Bulger and his brother. Connolly was tasked with bringing down the Italian mob, and he was aided by Bulger, who burnished his own position as Boston crime kingpin by getting rid of the competition for his Winter Hill gang."

Edgerton is a fantastic actor, and I have no doubt that he and Depp are going to be great together in the movie. I love mob films, and this one has potential to be great.
