Guillermo del Toro Discusses HEAVEN SENT, MONSTER, and His Life & Career

$

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend screenings of Guillermo del Toro's The Devi's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth. The director was in attendance to do a Q&A in-between the films. During the Q&A, he discussed his career, the things that inspired him to make his movies, his interest in the occult, some real life ghost stories, and also talked about a couple of projects he's trying to get off the ground such as his Justice League Dark film Heaven Sent, as well as his HBO series Monster. It's always entertaining listening to Del Toro talk about his life, career, and films. I recorded the whole thing for you to check out.

During the event, they also showed an incredibly badass new trailer for Pacific Rim that is sure to hit the internet in the near future. It was packed full of some cool new footage that you're sure to love!

When discussing Heaven Sent, he once again talked about the characters saying his script features Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, and Zantanna. He also said that there is a couple of other characters in the film as well that he wouldn't reveal because it would apparently spoil some things, so he's keeping it under his hat for now. Hopefully Warner Bros. likes the script so that Del Toro can make this movie!

As for his HBO Monster project, he said that he submitted the script for the pilot to HBO last week and that they’re reading it right now. He also says his version is very respectful to Naoki Urasawa's Japanese Manga series. The thriller "is about the worldwide search by a young doctor for the most evil sociopath that has ever lived. He is a 12-year old boy, and the doctor’s decision to save his life has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s Box that leaves the doc battling to stop a plot of mass genocide."

As cool as it is to get updates on these movies, the most interesting stuff involved Del Toro talking about his approach to filmmaking and his stubbornness when working with studios. It's all in the video below, I apologize for the low sound quality in our video. In case you have a hard time hearing, I also included an audio only version with better sound quality thanks to WhySoBluTube. If you're a fan of Del Toro and his films, then this is something you'll want to listen to.

Here's a full trailer for the prequel to the Japanese anime series Ghost in the Shell, which is called Arise. The four part series reveals the origin of Motoko Kusanagi a.k.a. The Major, and will show us how the Section 9 team came together. Each part in the series will be 50 minutes long. It's also going to get a short limited theatrical release in June. It's scheduled to be released in Japan on Blu-ray and DVD on July 26th. If you're a fan of this franchise like me, then this is going to be something you want to see. It looks great!

In 2027, one year after the end of the Fourth Non-Nuclear War, the guttural town of New Port City is plagued with one mass tragedy after another. Enter Public Security Section's Daisuke Aramaki to lead an investigation along with Batou better known to the criminal scourge as "the man with the eye that does not sleep." Running parallel to this investigation is the military's clandestine 501st Secret Unit, which happens to count Motoko Kusanagi, the cyborg, wizard-level hacker amongst its many members. Also investigating these events is the Niihama Prefectural Police detective Togusa. When all three investigations cross paths, secrets will be revealed and terrible truths unearthed.

The new series was directed by Kise Kazuchika who has worked on other projects such as Blood: The Last Vampire, Dennou Coil, and the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchises, as well as previous Ghost In The Shell projects that have been made. Mardock Scramble creator Ubukata Tow wrote the screenplay.

Check out the new trailer! It's all in Japanese, and there are no subtitles, but it still looks cool!

Warner Bros. Officially Moving Forward with GREMLINS Remake

Earlier this year, it was rumored that Warner Bros. was looking to remake the classic 1984 family horror film Gremlins. I never had a good feeling about this remake, as the first Steven Spielberg-produced and Joe Dante-directed film is a classic.

This movie should never be touched, but according to Bloody-Disgusting the Gremlins remake is officially moving forward and the studio has brought in Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Dark Shadows) to produce the movie alongside David Katzenberg. Smith also recently completed a draft for the studio’s Beetlejuice remake. I assume he'll write Gremlins as well, but it's not confirmed. I thought Dark Shadows had a terrible script, so I'm not the biggest fan of Smith's screenwriting skills. Just because he's written a couple of silly books obviously doesn't mean he's a good screenwriter. I'm not confident in his abilities.

The original story follows a boy who gets a pet Mogwai. There are three rules to follow for this new pet that he inadvertently breaks, and it unleashes a horde of hellish mischievous Gremlins who wreak havoc on a small town.

I wouldn't mind the Gremlins coming back if it was being planned as a sequel, but the fact that it's being completely remade makes me sad.

What do you think about this movie getting remade, and Grahame-Smith developing it?

Roland Emmerich Wants a Series of INDEPENDENCE DAY Films

Director Roland Emmerich and his producer Dean Devlin have been working hard on bringing us two follow-ups to Independence Day. It seems like it's going to happen, but Emmerich is also looking to go beyond those two sequels. He revealed in a recent Q&A session during the Hero Complex Film Festival that he hopes to see a whole series of films get made. It was also revealed that Jeff Goldblum is expected to return. /Film was on hand to get some of that info.

When asked where the sequel currently stood, Devlin had this to say:

Roland and I would really like to do one. We have some pretty darn good ideas on how to do one and, hopefully, that will all come together. A lot of things have to align. The planets have to piece together and if they do, it’ll happen.

They then confirmed that Goldblum's character has a place in their story and that he's expected to return. Emmerich then goes on to talk about building a mythology that would allow for them to make more than one sequel.

That’s actually what we talked a lot about. The mythology of why did the aliens come in the first place, what is the bigger story of this whole thing? And we talked a lot about swarm intelligence. And [the humans] are individual intelligence. Even though we kill each other and have wars against each other, we have something special. We have this domino human spirit to believe in good and over coming enemies. And it’s a little bit about that and when you get a bigger mythology going, I think then you have the chance to do not only one or two or three but you can create a series and that’s what we want to do.

I think they could pull this off. These movies will make money, and as long as they keep making money, the studios and filmmakers will want to keep making films. I'm really curious to see what their plans are. Hopefully everything comes together sooner rather than later because I think it would be really fun to see this sci-fi franchise come back.

Kevin Smith has announced via his Facebook account that he's completed the first draft of his final film, Clerks III. When he first started to write the script, he stated that it would be the best film he'd ever make. He tweeted the photo above of the script with the following note...

IT IS ACCOMPLISHED! CLERKS III, FIRST DRAFT!

At 137 pages, it plays like THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK of what's now become the Clerks Trilogy. And I am SO in love with it. Pictured is the script with the clapboard we used on the original CLERKS. Both the old clapboard and the old filmmaker are ready to go back to Jersey for the last time...

This is exciting stuff! I enjoyed the first two Clerks movies, and I'm looking forward to seeing these characters back one last time.

STAR WARS 1.5 - Why Anakin Didn't Save His Mom

If you couldn't tell from the picture, this is indeed a comedic parody, but it does raise a few interesting questions. Why the hell did Anakin have to wait so long to go back to see his mother? Why did no one ever go and rescue her? Why is the Jedi code always the exact opposite of everything that Anakin Skywalker wants?! There are some parts that are a bit overdone (the coffee), but the interaction with the actual characters and the effects used in the video are pretty great! Good work p3pictures.

Trailer for NBC's New DRACULA Series Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers

NBC has released the first trailer for their new Dracula TV series starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the title role. I wasn't sure what to expect from this when it was first announced, but it looks like they've managed to turn this into a great looking series. This show has some seriously solid production value.

The 10-episode series introduces Dracula as he arrives in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who maintains that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. In reality, he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier. There’s only one circumstance that can potentially thwart his plan: Dracula falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.

Check out the trailer for yourself and let us know what you think. It will air on Fridays this fall.

MAN OF STEEL - New Full Track from Score and TV Spot

WaterTower Music has released a second full track from Hans Zimmer's Man of Steel musical score called "DNA". The composer talked to Rolling Stone about his score in an interview recently, in which he explained,

My inspiration for the music came from trying to celebrate all that is good and kind in the people of America's heartland, without cleverness or cynicism. Just from the heart. I wanted the epic sound of the fields and farms stretching past the horizon, of the wind humming in the telephone wires. The music is less about the icon that Superman is and more about the outsider with extraordinary powers and his struggle to become a part of humanity.

This score sounds great, and I'm excited to hear more. I've also included a brand new TV spot for the film that is airing during the NBA playoffs. It's got a couple bits of new footage as well.

Man of Steel will hit theaters June 14th, 2013. Enjoy the new track and TV spot!

Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, Russell Crowe, Michael Kelly, Harry Lennix, and Richard Schiff.

In the film, a young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

Intense Trailer for the WWII Film STALINGRAD

I've got a pretty awesome trailer for you to watch today for a Russian-made World War II film called Stalingrad. The story is set during the horrific battle for Stalingrad, which is a fight that lasted for more than six months before the German army surrendered in 1943. There's also a love story that's been thrown into the mix, but for the most part, this thing is an epic historical WWII action film.

This film wasn't even on my radar until today, but I'm looking forward to watching it when I get a chance! The movie was directed by Fedor Bondarchuk (Inhabited Island), and it's being released by Sony Pictures International in IMAX 3D. There's no word on when the film is going to be released yet, but it will hit Russia first. Here's some more information on the film...

The original script by Ilya Tilkin does not have any literary source. The screenwriter studied diaries of the participants of the Battle of Stalingrad. He also used museum archives, documents and recorded stories of its participants.

The plot is based on "a dramatic love story against the backdrop of a grand battle." The action takes place in 1942 when the German troops occupied the bank of the Volga river. Having failed while attempting to cross the Volga to launch a counteroffensive on the German Army, the Soviet troops were forced to retreat. However, a few soldiers managed to get to the shore on the enemy's side. They remained hidden in a coastal house where they meet a girl. The Germans had occupied her home, and she did not have time to leave the front lines.

Against the backdrop of the most bloody battle in the history of mankind develops a love story, and, from that moment, the soldiers have to protect this girl at any cost. The prototype of this house is the legendary Pavlov's House in Stalingrad. On the eve of the filming, the script was significantly rewritten by the director and screenwriter Sergey Snezhkin including the plot and dialogues.

Now, enjoy the trailer!

I, FRANKENSTEIN Motion Poster Debut

Lionsgate has released the first poster for I, Frankenstein, and it happens to be a pointless motion poster. They could have just released this as a regular poster design because the fact that it moves back and forth like this does nothing special. The film is based on the graphic novel created by Kevin Grievous. Here's the synopsis...

Set in a dystopic present where vigilant gargoyles and ferocious demons rage in a battle for ultimate power, Victor Frankenstein's creation Adam (Aaron Eckhart) finds himself caught in the middle as both sides race to discover the secret to his immortality.

The movie was written and directed by Stuart Beattie. It also stars Bill Nighy, Yvonne Strahovski, Miranda Otto, Jai Courtney, Socratis Otto, Mahesh Jadu, Caitlin Stasey and Aden Young as Victor Frankenstein.

I, Frankenstein is set to hit theaters on January 24th, 2014.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST - Wolverine and Beast in 1973

Bryan Singer has sure enjoyed sharing some cool production photos from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past. He's fully embraced the power of social media. Today, he tweeted out a great photo of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Nicholas Hoult as Beast in 1973. The image came along with the following note:

Welcome to 1973.

I've enjoyed everything I've seen so far from the film which also stars Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Halle Berry, Daniel Cudmore, Fan Bingbing and Boo Boo Stewart. The movie will be released on July 18th, 2014.

The film is based on the comic book storyline "Days of Future Past," which ran in Uncanny X-Men #141 and 142 back in 1981 during Chris Claremont and John Byrne's run and introduced the idea of an alternate future for Marvel's mutants that grew out of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants killing an important senator, leading to a future where all mutants are hunted by Sentinels.

Here's a beautiful series of superhero art created by French artist Samuel Bernard. The illustrations feature Batman, Superman, The Flash, and The Thing. I really like the style. It's different from anything I've seen before when it comes to these characters.

Tom Welling Joins Ivan Reitman's Football Movie DRAFT DAY

Smallville star Tom Welling has joined the cast of Ivan Reitman's upcoming football movie Draft Day. Welling will star alongside Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, and Denis Leary.

According to the report, Welling will play a character named Brian Drew, "a veteran quarterback in the crossroads of his career, in the story about a Cleveland Browns GM (Costner) who attempts to trade up for the first pick in the NFL Draft and save football in the city."

This is the second movie role that Welling has had since Smallville ended. He has a supporting role in a JFK film called Parkland, which just started shooting. I'm surprised Welling hasn't done more film. Draft Day should be a solid project for him. Reitman has made some amazing movies in his career, and this sounds like it could be a good one.

I love it when I see something that surprises the hell out of me, and that's exactly what this trailer for The Congress has done. I'm sure it will do the same thing for you, this thing looks insanely wild, crazy, weird and fantastic!

The movie is loosely based on Stanislaw Lem's The Futurological Congress, and it stars Robin Wright as herself. She plays an aged star who sells her likeness to a movie studio. The movie was directed by Ari Folman (Waltz with Bashir), and it also stars Harvey Keitel, Danny Huston, Paul Giamatti, and more. Here's an official short synopsis for the film:

An aging, out-of-work actress accepts one last job, though the consequences of her decision affect her in ways she didn't consider.

The movie is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, now check out the trailer!

MEDIEVAL TIMES Is Getting a Big Screen Adaptation

$

The famous Medieval Times dinner and tournament franchise is on it's way to getting it's very own feature film adaptation. The production companies Benderspink and Broken Road have teamed to bring the Medieval Times to life on the big screen. They are currently putting together a package that they will end up shopping around to studios.

I've only been to Medieval Times once, and it was a pretty fun time! There are nine locations made to look like 11th-century Spanish castles. Each event pits six knights in jousting tournaments and sword fighting competitions for the title of "King’s Champion." If you've never been, it's worth checking out at least once. The one in Anaheim CA has a pretty cool medieval torture museum!

Medieval Times was also used as a setting in films such as Garden State, and who could forget the best scene in The Cable Guy. Benderspink has a couple films coming out this summer such as The Hangover Part III and We’re The Millers

There's no word on what the movie will be about, but I imagine it will be a comedy that revolves around the people that work at Medieval Times. I could see something like that actually being really funny.

Arnold Schwarzenegger in Talks to Join TOXIC AVENGER

Here's a bit of entertainment casting news that completely came out of left field. Arnold Schwarzenegger is in talks to join the remake of the terribly fantastic 1980's cult film Toxic Avenger. I'm still not sure why this film is being remade, but if Schwarzenegger is on board, it's going to make it a hell of a lot more interesting. At the same time... is this really what the actor has resorted to? He's up for a lead role in the movie, but it isn't the Toxic Avenger. At one point John Travota was rumored to be up for a part, but thank goodness that didn't happen.

Two years ago it was announced that Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine) would direct the film, and it looks like he's still attached to helm it from a script that he co-wrote with Daniel C. Mitchell. Pink had this to say in a previous statement,

The Toxic Avenger is exactly what the country--wait, that's not big enough--what the world needs right now.

Story centers around a man named Melvin Ferd III, a 98-pound weakling who gets transformed into a superhuman crime-fighting creature after falling into a vat of toxic waste. The plan is turn it into a family movie franchise, that is an environmentally conscious action-comedy.

Schwarzenegger most recently appeared in Lionsgate’s The Last Stand, which I enjoyed. The next film we'll see him in is David Ayer’s action thriller Ten.

Daft Punk: Random Access Memories - Now Streaming Online!!!!

The album won't be coming out for around two weeks, but you can now stream the entire album online for free! The whole thing can be found on iTunes or by clicking this link on Grooveshark. I really love this album. It reminds me of some of their lighter work on Discovery ("Something About Us" and "Verdis Quo") while combining some of the heavier electronic prowess found on Alive 2007. Be warned: those of you who are expecting a full out Tron inspired electronica explosion, you're going to be disappointed -- listening to the band's other work you shouldn't have expected that.

All in all, this album is worth the hype.  I truly enjoyed it front to back. If you want one track that sums up the album really well, I suggest listening to "Giorgio By Morodor". It's a fantastic song to set the tone and includes a cameo by none other than Werner Herzog! Check out that track below and click the link above for the full album!
