Games of Thrones Actor to Play Prince in Disney's CINDERELLA

Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden, who plays Robb Stark on the HBO drama, is set to play the Prince in Disney's live-action adaptation of Cinderella. The movie is being directed by Kenneth Branagh (Thor) from a script written by Chris Weitz and Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada). Madden will join Downton Abbey actress Lily James who is playing the title character, and Cate Blanchett who has perfectly been cast as the villainous stepmother.

It's hard to imagine any of these Game of Thrones actors in a light and fluffy Disney movie, but Madden is a solid actor, who will do a fine job as the Prince in it. I'm curious to see what this movie is going to end up looking like visually. Branagh full heartedly embraced (some say overused) the Dutch angle heavily used in comics when making Thor. It will be interesting to see what he carries over from the iconic animated film into his live-action take on the story.

Marvel's First Animated Feature BIG HERO 6 Release Date and Details!

Last year, word got out that Disney was looking to develop Big Hero 6 as Marvel's first big screen animated film. Since then, the movie has progressed forward with its director Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Disney has given the CG-animated film a release date of November 7th, 2014!

Hall pitched the idea to John Lasseter last year, and apparently he loved what he heard and saw. The 1998 comic series was created by Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau, and the story is set in Tokyo. It's about a group of government-sanctioned heroes, specifically “a robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada and his robot companion BayMax, who join a team of superheroes.”

Some new details on the project have come to light thanks to the LA Times. It explains one of the big changes in the adaptation is that the story will be moved from Tokyo to the fictional high-tech city of "San Fransokyo" -- a hybrid of Tokyo and San Francisco. I've included a video below and a piece of concept art to give you an idea of what that city looks like. I've got to say... it's looks pretty rad.

When talking to the Times, Hall explained that he enjoyed the freedom of working with a comic that doesn’t have a huge fan base,

I was looking for something on the obscure side, something that would mesh well with what we do. The idea of a kid and a robot story with a strong brother element, it’s very Disney.

Marvel properties take place in the real world. We were looking for something to do where we could make our own world — bring in the Japanese influences,  have recognizable landmarks mashed up with a Japanese aesthetic.

As explained by Marvel Comics' Joe Quesada, "The storytelling aspects are very frenetic, very visceral. It takes tropes of Japanese culture, manga, anime. There are giant dinosaurs that invade a city, big robots, youth fashion, cutesy stuff in the vein of Hello Kitty."

The movie will easily fit in the rest of the Disney brand. I've never read the comic book, but it sounds like it could be a great film, and I'm looking forward to seeing more. You can find a detailed plot summary below the video and concept art.

Here's a detailed synopsis for the original story:

When the Japanese government wanted a team of state-sanctioned super-heroes at their disposal, a top-secret consortium of politicians and business entities known as the Giri was formed to recruit and train potential superhuman operatives for "Big Hero 6." Despite reservations by some members of the Giri, Silver Samurai, a freelance ronin and former bodyguard of the terrorist Viper, was appointed as field commander. Secret agent Honey Lemon, inventor of the nanotechnology-based Power Purse from which she could access any object, also agreed to join the team. The tough-talking GoGo Tomago, able to transubstantiate her body into a fiery force blast by uttering her code-name, was released from prison on the condition that she serve on the team. The Machiavellian bureaucrat known only as Mr. Oshima was appointed as the Giri's spokesperson and coordinated Big Hero 6's activities.

Government scientists next identified 13-year-old boy genius Hiro Takachiho as a potential operative. Unimpressed with the Silver Samurai, Hiro declined joining the team until his mother was kidnapped by the Everwraith, the astral embodiment of all those killed in the 1945 nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Joined by Baymax, a synthetic bodyguard capable of synthforming into a dragon which was created by Hiro using the brain engrams of his dead father, Hiro reluctantly joined forces with Big Hero 6 to prevent Everwraith from slaughtering millions in downtown Tokyo. During the battle, Big Hero 6 was joined by Sunfire, Japan's premiere super hero and a mutant with the ability to super-heat matter into plasma, who was instrumental in the Everwraith's defeat.

Soon after, Big Hero 6 moved their headquarters from the Giri Office Building to Japan's Cool World Amusement Park, where they were attacked by X the Unknowable, a monster born from a child's drawings that could transform its atomic structure into any form and shape. With the help of Alpha Flight, Big Hero 6 destroyed X the Unknowable in the fires of Mount Fuji. Afterwards, Big Hero 6 continued to protect Japan from all threats, such as when the team rescued Tokyo residents from a freak blizzard caused by the Crimson Cowl (Justine Hammer) and her Masters of Evil.

Eventually, Sunfire left Big Hero 6 so that he could work at Charles Xavier's X-Corporation office in Mumbai, India. His spot on the team was filled by Sunpyre, a young woman with similar solar-based powers who was pulled into this reality through the Power Purse and came to worship Honey Lemon as her own personal god. Similarly, after Silver Samurai was seemingly slain in an altercation with the assassin Elektra in Iraq, his spot on the team was filled by the enigmatic Ebon Samurai. With the two most experienced members of Big Hero 6 gone, Hiro became the team's new leader.

Most recently, the members of Big Hero 6 fell victim to a mind-control device implanted within Baymax. Traveling to Canada, the mind-controlled super heroes attacked a new incarnation of Alpha Flight at a national park. After a brief battle, the mind-control device was short-circuited and the two teams parted as friends. Big Hero 6 returned to Japan to seek out the parties responsible for their mind-control.

When the Japanese government wanted a team of state-sanctioned super-heroes at their disposal, a top-secret consortium of politicians and business entities known as the Giri was formed to recruit and train potential superhuman operatives for “Big Hero 6.” Despite reservations by some members of the Giri, Silver Samurai, a freelance ronin and former bodyguard of the terrorist Viper, was appointed as field commander. Oshima was appointed as the Giri’s spokesperson and coordinated Big Hero 6's activities.

Disney has released a new spot for Pixar's Monsters University wishing all the moms out there a Happy Mother's Day! The wonderful looking movie comes out in theaters on June 21st, 2013. Enjoy the latest spot!

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer.  The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.

Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and features music from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman  (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story 3”). The film opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2013, and will be shown in 3D in select theaters.

SLC PUNK Sequel in Development with Original Cast in Talks

I honestly never thought we'd see a sequel to the 1998 cult classic SLC Punk. I loved that movie, and I've watched it countless time over the years. It's really rare to see a sequel to an independent film like this get made. I think it's still relevant though, and it could end up being a great movie!

The first movie is set in the 1980s, and it follows the crazy lives of dedicated Punks, Stevo and Heroin Bob, living their lives in conservative Salt Lake City. If you haven't seen it yet, you should!

The director of the film James Merendino recently announced that he’d be making the sequel and that it would be called Punk’s Dead. According to Film School Rejects, the story will explore what happens when the rebellious get older. Here's what Merendino had to say,

I made SLC Punk when I was a kid, and accordingly, the story is naive, and, as just a coming of age story, not finished. The characters are facing big questions, 18 years later, as outsiders, Punk rockers… What relevance do they have in a world where all statements have already been made?

The initial announcement noted that most of the original cast would return, but a source close to the production has confirmed to the site that Matthew Lillard is in talks to return along with Annabeth GishDevon SawaTil SchweigerChris McDonald, and Michael A. Goorjian.

As a fan of the first film, I'm excited to see how this turns out and where these characters all ended up in life. The movie will shoot this August with a possible release date in 2014. I'll be looking forward to it!

Visually Emotive Anti-Suicide Short - THE FORGE

Here's a beautifully shot short film called The Forge that was made to send out a positive anti-suicide message. It's done in a visually explosive way. The movie was written and directed by Stephen Reedy, and it was inspired by the death of the sister of the film's star Eric Lim. She took her own life. This may be influenced by a tragic event, but this delivers an inspiring message of hope for anyone that is hurting, and it's told in a very stunning way. Here's a message from the director,

THE FORGE, an emotional, anti-suicide message in which a man battles his inner demon in a fight for his life.

You see... our friend’s sister, Tanya Lim, killed herself, leaving behind her savings to her brother and aspiring movie producer Eric. Eric felt the only appropriate use of this tragic gift was to make something both in her honor and to prevent others from falling into the dark place she fell victim to. To shed a ray of strength on people affected by depression.

The end result is The Forge. A short film made by a group of friends and strangers-turned-family that came together to make a re-imagining of the public service announcement in their free time over the course of one year. The production value is impressive and I’m particularly really proud to be part of this.

Watch it below.

Thanks to Nathan Fackrell and Stephen Reedy for sending this to us.

New UNDER THE DOME Promo Spot - Watchtower

A new promo trailer for the Stephen King and Steven Spielberg-produced series Under The Dome has been released by CBS. It's called "Watchtower" and it offers us plenty of new footage from the exciting looking series.

Brian K. Vaughan of LOST is developing the show, and the pilot episode was directed by Niels Arden Ople (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). I really enjoyed the book that the series is based off of, and it looks like they did a decent job bringing it to life. I'm excited about this one.

The sci-fi thriller is set to premiere on Monday, June 24th at 10 pm.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a selectwoman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn’t just short. It’s running out.

Commander Riker from STAR TREK Sure has a Funny Way of Sitting

I don't really pay attention to the way people sit down, and I would have never thought Commander William Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation had a funny way of doing it. But watching him sit over and over again in this video compilation is pretty funny. As you'll see, Riker prefers to swing his leg over the back of a chair to sit. I guess he can sit down anyway he damn well pleases. The Enterprise obviously wasn't built for tall people. Let's call the way he sites down "The Riker Maneuver."

Thanks to Emily for the Tip!

Michael Shannon to Star in New Sci-Fi Film for Warner Bros.

Man of Steel star Michael Shannon is teaming back up with director Jeff Nichols to bring us a new sci-fi film. The two worked together on Take Shelter, in which Shannon gave one of the best performances of his career.

The movie is set up at Warner Bros. As of right now there's no title or detailed information on what the story is about. The only thing we have to go off of at this point is a description that calls it a "present day sci-fi chase film."

This will be Nichols' first big studio film. The last movie he made was called Mud, with Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, and it was fantastic! If you haven't seen Take Shelter or Mud, I suggest you take the time to see them. Nichols is a talented director, I like his style of storytelling and filmmaking. He and Shannon also make an amazing team. I know this project that they're developing is going to be a good one.

Here's an impressive CGI model of Jack Nicholson's iconic scene from The Shining. The illustration was done by Hossein Diba, and it's appropriately called "Here's Johnny!" As good as CG is getting it will never fully replace real actors. What would be crazy is if one day all of these GC character rose up against their makers and tried to take over the world.

John Carpenter Looking to Make DEAD SPACE Movie

$

John Carpenter, the man behind films such as The Thing, Halloween, and Escape From New York, has expressed interest in directing a big screen adaptation of EA Games' creepy horror game Dead Space. During an interview with IGN, the director said,

I would love to make Dead Space [into a film], I'll tell you that right now. That one is ready-made. You know it's great. The first game was more - I guess it was like Alien - but not quite. It was a little different than that. I maintain that Dead Space would just make a great movie because you have these people coming onto an abandoned, shut-down space ship and they have to start it up and something's on board. It's just great stuff. I would love to make Dead Space [into a film], I'll tell you that right now. That one is ready-made.

The franchise has already gone beyond the games with novels, come books and animated movies, which I enjoyed watching! So of course, a live action movie is going to eventually happen. The question is: do you think Carpenter is the right man for the job?

He's made some classic films over the years, but let's face it... the guy hasn't made a decent film since In the Mouth of Madness back in 1994. The last movie he made was The Ward, and it was pretty disappointing. I'm not sure if he's still got it in him to make a great film. I could be wrong; he just has to prove it before he takes on a movie like Dead Space.

What do you think about Carpenter wanting to direct DEAD SPACE?

IRON MAN 3 Chinese Scenes Will Be Cut into Short Film

For those of you who are waiting to see those additional Chinese scenes from Iron Man 3, you'll be happy to know that Marvel is planning on releasing a short film that features them. It will also include other scenes that were shot not featured in either of the films.

From what I've heard, the scenes are nothing to get excited about, which is kind of a shame. It was previously reported that Chinese actor Wang Xueqi said he only agreed to be in Iron Man 3 because he was told his character would have weight in the film and would be “the one who saves Tony Stark’s life.” An argument can be made that he did, but I'm sure not in the way he was thinking. Maybe they will be able to cut together an interesting short from the scenes.

According to THR, the short is simply called The Prologue, and it's "comprised of sequences shot during the production of Iron Man 3 and was set before the narrative of the first film." It will elaborate on Wang’s character, Dr. Wu, "who only appeared for 10 seconds in the international version and three minutes in the China-only cut of the film. In the latter, the doctor was seen meeting a young Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in the 1990s; engaging in a telephone conversation with Stark’s robotic aide, Jarvis; and conducting acupuncture-aided surgery on Stark to heal the superhero’s injuries at the end of the film."

There's no word on when we'll see this short, but regardless, it's sure to hit the internet and be included with the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray/DVD.

I'm not expecting much from this, but hopefully it proves to be more entertaining than what I think it will be.

What are your expectations for this short film?

ONLY GOD FORGIVES - New Photos, Poster, and Director Statement

One of my most anticipated films this year is Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn's action thriller Only God Forgives, which is sure to be an insanely good movie with a stylized look, and crazy ultraviolence.

Gosling plays Julian in the film, who "lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly."

Thanks to The Playlist, we have some new photos from the film to share with you, along with a statement from the film's director where he talks about the film, the original concept, and compares it to the previous work that he's done.

The original concept for the film was to make a movie about a man who wants to fight God. That is, of course, a very vast obstacle but when I was writing the film, I was going through some very existential times in my life - we were expecting our second child and it was a difficult pregnancy - and the idea of having a character who wants to fight God without knowing why very much appealed to me.

With that as the concept, I elaborated by adding a character who believes he is God (Chang), obviously the antagonist, with the protagonist being a gangster who is looking for religion to believe in (Julian). This itself is, of course, very existential because faith is based on the need for a higher answer but most of the time, we don’t know what the question is. When the answer comes, then, we must backtrack our lives in order to find the question. In this way, the film is conceived as an answer, with the question revealed at the end.

With hindsight, I am able to see the similarities between Chang and One Eye in Valhalla Rising, and Driver in Drive - all are rooted in fairytale mythology and have difficulties living in the everyday world. I can see that technically, there is a resemblance in their stoic behavior, silence, and fetishistic portraits even though they live in different times and are portrayed by different actors. In Valhalla Rising, One Eye is enigmatic - we don’t know his past but he is defined by his name. In Drive, Driver is defined by his function. And in Only God Forgives, Chang is first of all defined by his enigmatic behaviour, to such an extent that he becomes a disembodied character, an ‘it’, defined not by his name but solely by his image.

In a way, Only God Forgives is like an accumulation of all the films I’ve made so far. I think I was heading toward a creative collision, full speed ahead, in order to change everything around me and to see what would come after. I have always said that I set out to make films about women but I end up making films about violent men. Now that everything is colliding, it may end up turning things upside-down for me. This collision is exciting because everything around me becomes so uncertain and we must not forget that the second enemy of creativity, after having ‘good taste’, is being safe.

This movie is going to be awesome! Only God Forgives comes out on May 23rd. Below the new photos is a new international poster.

Professor X Sporting 70s Look in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Bryan Singer has tweeted out another photo from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and it gives us a look at James McAvoy as Professor X sporting a very retro 1970s look. He still has his hair! The photo came with a single word from the director... "Serpico," which if you don't already know, is a reference to the 1973 Al Pacino film.  What do you think of Professor X's new look?

The movie also stars Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Nicholas Hoult, Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Halle Berry, Daniel Cudmore, Fan Bingbing, and Boo Boo Stewart.

Based on the comic book storyline "Days of Future Past," which ran in Uncanny X-Men #141 and 142 back in 1981 during Chris Claremont and John Byrne's run and introduced the idea of an alternate future for Marvel's mutants that grew out of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants killing an important senator, leading to a future where all mutants are hunted by Sentinels.

Legendary Pictures tweeted out the first couple of pages from the Pacific Rim prequel comic book Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero. I've also included a couple of new photos, which feature new Jaegers that I haven't seen before called Horizon Brave and Romeo Blu!

The story for the comic chronicles "the very first time Earth is menaced by incredible monsters known as Kaiju, these inhuman beasts rise from the ocean depths and threaten to extinguish all mankind! Witness the race to develop massive robot fighting machines called Jaegers, each one controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. This action-packed book features many of the key characters from the film as we follow them in their early careers."

The comic was written by Pacific Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham, along with Guillermo del Toro's hands-on supervision. It was illustrated by Sean Chen, Yvel Guichet, and Pericles Junior; with inks by Steve Bird and Mark McKenna.

The comic will be released on June 5th, and the movie on July 12th!

Hilarious Movie Posters with In-Production Working Titles

One of the silly things that Hollywood still does these days is use fake movie titles during the production of a film. The reason for this is to throw the general public off when they are shooting in public areas. Of course, for those of us that like to keep track of this kind of thing, it doesn't really matter because we know what's really going on.

For example, Batman Begins was made under The Intimidation Game, The Avengers was Group Hug, Captain America was Frostbite, Return of the Jedi was Blue Harvest, Pacific Rim was Still Seas, and as you'll see there are a lot more.

Reddit user daidalos5 posted a set of movie posters that replaces the actual title of several films with their working title, and it's really quite funny. Thanks to /Film for the heads up! Hope you enjoy these!

Eerie Concept Art for THE MAZE RUNNER

$

I really wasn't sure what to expect from the big screen adaptation of The Maze Runner, but this piece of concept art shows us something massively epic! It was enough to spark some excitement in me. The image comes from EW who points out that the maze walls look "industrial and ancient."

The movie stars Teen Wolf actor Dylan O'Brien, Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelario, AmlAmeen, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. First-time feature film director Wes Ball talked about what inspired him to make the film saying,

It was for me, really. I like writing images. I started daydreaming about what it’s like to be at those doors and looking up at those walls.

This image is what he imagined up. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows Thomas, "who after having his memory wiped is deposited in a community of boys trapped in an enormous maze. He soon learns they are part of a mysterious test, and finds it is his destiny to join the ‘maze runners’ and lead them to freedom." Here are some more details on the story offered up by EW,

The story begins with the lead character, Thomas (played by Teen Wolf‘s Dylan O’Brien), awakening inside a rusting, rumbling industrial elevator, which ascends from some unfathomable depth — into a peaceful meadow. He has no idea who he is or where he comes from. “The doors open and deposit him in this rustic, idyllic place surrounded by walls on all sides,” says Ball.

Thomas also finds himself surrounded by a ragtag group of other boys his age. “He is just one of many boys who have come up once a month in the last three years,” Ball says. They also have no idea who they are or how they got there, but they’ve pieced together a few things about the creepy walls that surround them.

Each morning, the barriers slide open. There is no other way out of the glade. “They have been trying to figure out how the hell to get out of this place and deal with the maze beyond the walls,” Ball says. “The doors open in the morning and the boys have to get back before they close because nobody survives a night in the maze.”

There’s something out there that preys on the ones who stay out too long. The kids call the creatures Grievers, though none has ever actually seen one (and lived.)

Most of the kids are content to stay within the confines — and relative safety — of the glade, even if it means never knowing why they’re there, or if anything lies beyond. Something must be, right? Something built all this and put them there. Only the bravest of the boys are willing to venture out to look for escape.

A moment like that is what Ball hints at amid the tiny figures in this concept drawing. ”Thomas is the boy who takes that step forward when everybody else takes a step back,” he says.

Another challenge: the maze changes every day. Despite its imposing size, the walls somehow shift in the night, and so those who run out to map it tend to find their efforts useless the next day.

The movie sounds like it's going to be incredibly entertaining. I love the concept. It goes into production soon, and it's set to be released on February 14th, 2014. I'm looking forward to seeing more!
