FINAL FANTASY VERSUS XIII: Not Sure Why, But I Still Care

$

Final Fantasy Versus XIII has truly become the Duke Nukem Forever of our generation. It's rather puzzling how it got to this point. In a time where Square has seen the Final Fantasy brand fall from its once high perch, and profits for the company overall dwindle, you would think the plug would have already been pulled if the game was a true turkey. MIA aside from a leak or two since 2006, a great deal of money has been invested, so maybe that's why, but honestly no one really knows outside of Square.

All I do know is I still want it. I know, call me crazy, but if Square has let it go on for this long then there must be something else to this title than return on investment. The game must show some sort of promise, and it does have quite a bit going for it. Seeing the gameplay (below) reminds me of FF XII mixed with KH2, which is pretty sweet on its own (and it makes sense since the KH team is the one developing it). The modern mixed with the fantastical has always been a hallmark of the series, and that is very apparent here, with a touch more modern than usual (and even more brooding, which is stunning in itself).

It looks fantastic, but then so do a lot of titles. As we learned from Operation Rainfall, as good as they look they might not all be winners (as 2 of the 3 titles have been very divisive among critics). Maybe I'm just setting myself up for disappointment, but it's a risk I'm willing to take.

If it's real, consider it pre-ordered.

First Full Clip From Kick-Ass 2 - Heroes vs. Villains

The first full clip from Kick-Ass 2 is up, and we get our first look at a ton of new heroes and villains and what looks to be a pretty epic battle. The biggest positive I saw from this clip was the increased production value, which was one of the only things I think the previous movie lacked. "Time to meet the Devil."

A new neon poster and two more great trailers have been released for Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling's insane looking new film Only God Forgives. The trailers give us a little more detail on the story and offer up some more new footage that you'll want to see! You'll even get to see Kristin Scott Thomas own her role as Gosling's mother. This is sure to be a crazy violent, badass movie. I don't know about you, but I love Refn's style of storytelling. Here's the synopsis for the film...

Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.

The movie is set to premiere at Cannes. It hits theaters this summer on May 23rd. For those of you who haven't seen the previously released red-band trailer yet, make sure you click here to check it out! This movie looks so amazing!

For those who always thought having a large and imposing Reaper on your desk would be the end all be all, well, I have good news! Turns out Darkhorse thought the same thing, and so we have this 18.5" tall Reaper limited edition statue. It's up for pre-order now, and while it is quite expensive at $349.99 the statue itself is quite impressive. You can get your hands on one when it releases in August of this year.

Part of me wants one, but only if I could get some Mass Effect Minimates to put underneath it.

I know. I have problems.

PITCH PERFECT Sequel Coming in 2015

Pitch Perfect is on a constant loop at my house because my two little girls absolutely love the film. They can't stop watching it. So of course they were incredibly excited to hear that a Pitch Perfect 2 is coming. Universal Pictures has hired Kay Cannon (30 RockPitch Perfect) to come back and write the sequel. They are looking to release the movie in 2015, and I imagine they'll bring back the majority of the original cast including Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson.

I'll admit that I enjoyed the film... the first time I watched, now I can't stand it. The movie pulled in over $113 million worldwide, and the audience for it is growing, so I imagine the sequel will do even better.

The film's soundtrack yielded three Billboard-charting singles and was the best-selling soundtrack of 2012. The gang recently got together and performed for the MTV Movie Awards, and they were a big hit. Kendrick also recently released a music video for her cover of the cups song "When I'm Gone," which you can watch below...

Harrison Ford goes off on Chewbacca on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Harrison Ford appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night to talk about his new movie 42, but of course all anyone wants to ask him about is Star Wars; Episode VII. While on the show he makes it very clear that he won't answer any Stars Wars questions, so fans dressed up as Star Wars characters struggle to ask him any other questions. Then Chewbacca shows up and completely sets Ford off! It was a very funny and playful exchange that got me even more excited to see Ford back as Solo! It was clearly all set up, but I loved how it all played out!

I've also included Ford and Chewbacca's fight from last year, which ironically features Ford saying that he's "done with that Star Wars crap."

Zack Snyder Reveals Secrets from the New MAN OF STEEL Trailer

The last trailer released for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel blew me away. It was pretty incredible seeing Superman in action and punching people! It actually looks like it's going to be the Superman movie we've all been waiting for, and I couldn't be more excited to see this movie! Snyder recently sat down with EW and revealed a few mysteries that were tucked away into the trailer.

While we don't see Lex Luthor, we do see one of his LexCorp buildings. There's no word on how big of a part Lex will play in the film, but he does exist in this universe.

Is that a big mothership spacecraft buried in the ice in the Arctic? Why yes it is. This is revealed as being the Fortress of Solitude. There's going to be no big crystal fortress in this movie.

Instead of building his own Fortress, Clark Kent steps into the existing home market — and emerges as Superman. The residents of Krypton are an advanced race, keep in mind. Their knowledge and exploration of the cosmos far surpasses our own, and when Jor-El launches his son to Earth, our planet isn’t unknown to them. It is a massive craft left behind by a previous group of Kryptonian pioneers.

This is general Zod looking over Metropolis from inside his command ship — the Black Zero. In this movie the villain is dispatched aboard a prison ship instead of being sent to the phantom zone. Zod retrofits the prison ship and comes to attack earth in it.

In the beginning of the trailer, we see Jor-El watching a war waging on Krypton. We also see someone riding off into the distance aboard what looks like a big winged creature. That is Jor-El, and the creature is his ride.

When he needs to get somewhere in a hurry, Jor-El hops aboard this creature, which Deborah Snyder said was named “Herocka.” “It has insect wings, but has kind of a rodent-ish face,” she says. “At first he was a little mean, but we made him look more sympathetic.”

The director is then asked about other DC superheroes being hooked into this world. He then hints at the possibility of a Superman sequel, or another movie that will include Superman -- Justice League perhaps?

I really enjoy the character, and I really loved shooting this movie about him. And whatever happens as we go ahead, I’m not exhausted by Superman. I’m knocking on wood. I’m not going to try to say, ‘Yeah, we’re going to make another movie!’ because I don’t want to jinx anything.

To read the full article click here. There are a few more things that they discuss like why he turned himself into the military, which I thought was always pretty self-explanatory.

If there are any other things you were able to pick out of the trailer that you thought were interesting, let us know about them in the comments section below!

Universal Pictures Remaking John Hughes' WEIRD SCIENCE

Producer Joel Silver and Universal Pictures are planing on remaking John Hughes' classic 1985 comedy Weird Science. As a fan of the original movie, I can tell you that I'm not happy with this remake at all. Silver was a producer on the original film, but I don't think any of Hughes' films should be remade.

According to Deadline, they will "attempt to carve out its own identity by being redrawn as an edgier R-rated comedy in line with 21 Jump Street and The Hangover." I don't know if you saw the original movie or not, but I'd have to say that it was already pretty damn edgy and crude.

The movie starred Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith as a couple of genius teen geeks who create their perfect dream woman to fulfill their adolescent fantasies. Of course, things just get crazy out of control. The movie also starred Bill Paxton, Robert Downey Jr, and Kelly LeBrock. It's a great movie and I suggest you watch it if, for some reason, you haven't already.

The remake is being written by Michael Bacall, who also wrote Project X and the 21 Jump Street comedy reboot.

What do you all think of this movie getting remade?

Disney has released a fantastic new international trailer for The Lone Ranger featuring some more great footage, including more action and comedy. The movie is sure to bring on some incredibly fun entertainment! I really liked this trailer a lot, I think it was even better than the one that was released yesterday.

A second full trailer has been released for the new summer comedy The Internship, which stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as a couple of salesmen who find themselves out of a job because they haven't kept up with the digital age. To prove their worth, they end up becoming interns at Google, trying to work their way into a permanent position that a bunch of other tech geniuses are gunning for.

The movie may be a big Google advertisement, but I think it looks like it's going to be funny. Wilson and Vaughn are a great comedic team, and there's some more footage and funny dialogue packed into the trailer.

The movie was directed by Shawn Levy (Real Steel), and it also stars Rose Byrne, Dylan O’Brien, John Goodman, Max Minghella, Jessica Szohr, and Will Ferrell. The film will be released on June 7th, 2013. Check out the trailer!

Billy (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Owen Wilson) are salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital world. Trying to prove they are not obsolete, thet defy the odds by talking their way into a coveted internship at Google, along with a battalion of brillian college students. But, gaining entrance to this utopia is only half the battle. Now they must compete with a group pf the nation’s most elite, tech-savvy geniuses to prove that necessity really is the mother of re-invention.

Fantastically Creepy STAR WARS Fan Art by Gris Grimly

Check out this amazingly terrific fan art by Gris Grimly, which gives Star Wars a very cool, creepy vibe. I absolutely love the artist's style. Each piece was done in watercolor and ink. I hope the artist ends up doing some more Star Wars inspired art like this. I've included notes from the artist for each piece. This one explains the illustration above...

It represents a time period shortly after episode three, before Darth Vader becomes a stoic leader. At this time, he is an angry loose cannon who ruthlessly fights alongside the storm troopers. Inspiration derives from Friday the 13's Jason and Frank Miller's 300.

It features Yoda on the verge of being attacked by a Dagobah creature and quick to draw his lightsaber.

It's the familiar ATTACK OF THE DIANOGA in the trash compactor scene from the first Star Wars movie (episode IV). Although, I've taken the liberty to tell my own story here where Princess Leia is by herself (distressed like classic heroine) and being checked out by multiple Dianoga creatures. Typical.

Dark, Gritty Trailer for the Classic Bedtime Story GOODNIGHT MOON

The same group of filmmakers that brought us the dark and gritty trailer for Calvin & Hobbes have done one for the classic children's bedtime story Goodnight Moon. The trailer was created by GrittyReboots, and I really liked how it turned out!

The book was written by Margaret Wise Brown, and for those of you who can't remember here's what the book is about...

In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. "Goodnight room, goodnight moon." And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room—to the picture of the three little bears sitting in chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to the mittens and the kittens, to everything one by one—he says goodnight.

Goodnight, room.
Goodnight, moon.
Goodnight, cow jumping over the moon.
Goodnight, light
And the red balloon...

This trailer gives a whole new meaning to this beloved story, and it's a little more nightmarishly frightening. Check it out!

DreamWorks Animation to Develop THE CROODS 2

I took my kids to see The Croods thinking I wasn't going to like it, but I ended up really enjoying it! It was truly entertaining, and a lot better than I was expecting it to be. The film is reaching the $400 million box office mark, and according to Deadline, DreamWorks Animation plans on making a sequel. The studio has done pretty decent jobs with the sequels they've made so far, so there's a solid chance this one could end up being good.

There are obviously no plot details yet, but it will tell the further adventures of the Crood family.

Did you like THE CROODS, and do you think a sequel would be fun to see?

Catwoman The Cat Lady - Awesome Fan Art

$

Catwoman is the ultimate cat lady in this fantastically fun Batman fan art created by Deviant Art artist caanantheartboy. It features Catwoman surrounded by a bunch of other famous cats. The artist lists all of the cats included in the illustration in the following note...

Behind the couch: Krazy Kat, Azrael (Smurfs), Bill the Cat, Felix, MAD Cat (with a Hello Kitty doll), Top Cat and Snowball II. On (and above) the couch: Streaky (who is orange, yes. My bad!) Mooch (Mutts), Stimpy, Mr Kat (Kid vs Kat), Sylvester, Puss in Boots, Figaro. The rest: Tom, Simon's Cat, Nermal, Garfield, Penelope, O'Malley, Marie (I wasn't gonna do ALL the Aristocats!), Horse (Footrot Flats), the Cheshire Cat, and Bucky and Scratchy behind Batman. The posters are That Darn Cat and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. (I also could have done The Cat from Outer Space, Le Chat Noir, and many others. Space restrictions!) The framed 'cat man' is Blacksad. The record is of course Josie and the Pussycats and the book, which has become illegible from the scanning, is Jennie, by Paul Gallico. (I believe it may be called 'The Abandoned' in the US?) It's about a girl who turns in to a cat. My dad read it to me and my brother when we were kids.

It's cats only, so there's no tigers! (Hobbes, Tigger, etc... OUT.)

I avoided humanoid cats (except that Blacksad pic) and cats of a more adult nature. (Fritz. Fat Freddy's Cat. Etc.)

Both Eek and Heathcliff were on my list, but ultimately left off 'cos of space. I also left off others who came from the same 'world' to keep the variety up. So there's only two Aristocats out of many, and indeed other Disney cats were left out because of that (I love Oliver and Co.) Also with Sylvester and Penelope there was no need for Pussyfoot. Or even Furrball (Sylvester's Tiny Toons counterpart.) I probably could have put in Rita though (from Animaniacs.) It also meant no Arlene, since Garfield and Nermal were enough. Also there's nothing from anime or manga because I don't really watch/read much of it and this was meant to be an amalgam of stuff I grew up with and/or still read/watch, and not a comprehensive list. (Although I really wanted to scatter around some Samurai Pizza Cat toys but I don't think I could have achieved that in enough detail for people to get it straight away.)

Oh, and I was aiming for just cartoons and comics which is why no Cat in the Hat. Besides falling in to the humanoid category, it's also a children's book. (Maybe I should have put it on the coffee table too!)

I hope that answers some or all of the questions I've been seeing! I'm preparing to drive to Vancouver tomorrow for the Fan Expo this weekend so I haven't gotten to the comments, but I will! Thank you all for leaving them, and looking, and loving cats! In all their shapes and sizes.

5 Reasons Why A BATMAN BEYOND Film Should Happen Next

$

0

Poster Layout: Pasta-Sushi / Character Design by Ritorian

The more Batman Beyond I watch on Netflix the more I'm convinced that this would make a stellar next installment in the Batman movies. I loved the show as a kid, and like many other DC animated series of the era, I've grown and found the series still appeals to me in adulthood. Sure Terry McGinnis is no Bruce Wayne, and the story lines can get a bit angsty, but it's still pretty damn good. In my spree of watching, I've compiled a list of five reasons why a BB movie should and needs to happen.

5. The Character Terry McGinnis and What He Brings To Batman

Like I mentioned earlier, Terry McGinnis is no Bruce Wayne, but that's what makes it interesting. When it comes to Batman, Bruce makes it all too easy. He's a billionaire orphan shut-in with all the time in the world to go out and do his thing, such is not the case with Terry. Terry still has his mother and little brother to look after (his father was murdered by "The Jokers"), school work to attend to, and a social life. In terms of character, his citizen life in a way mirrors Peter Parker in the Spiderman movies. While that conflict can turn droll and annoying pretty quick, I think it really would tie well into the struggle of becoming The Batman in ways seldom explored by Bruce.

Another great thing about Terry is that he doesn't always go by the book Batman. His youth and generally confident attitude tend to betray him and always make for some interesting scenarios. It would be nice to see an imperfect Batman on the big screen. Case in point? Batman Year One.

4. It Handles the Awkward Passing of The Bat Torch

First you had West, who was followed by Keaton. Awesome no worries there, everyone loved it. Then you followed Keaton with Kilmer and people weren't entirely happy with the transition, but they still bit. So Hollywood, rushing to get out the next Batman blockbuster, sends in Clooney (Kilmer was committed to another movie when they rushed Batman & Robin into production) and BAM! We don't see Batman for another 8 years. In comes Christian Bale, who not only revitalized The Batman, but was also a big part in re-characterizing the role to a main stream audience. Basically, he is what people see as Batman now, and he's going to be damn hard to replace. So why not go a different direction with a new story, and give the audience time to simmer on the Batman trilogy. Either way it's going to "not be the same" so you might as well make it different.

3. The Villains

You don't have to burden yourself with realism in Neo-Gotham. It's the future! They have genetic splicing, ultra radiation, and all sorts of rad stuff that is turning people into crazy looking super villains! While there are plenty of new villains, there are also many homages to old-school villains such as the gang known as "The Jokers" that can be appreciated. Some villains, like the Royal Flush Gang and Mr. Freeze, are still around! Probably the best thing about the villains in Neo-Gotham is they can usher back in that whimsical element that the animated versions of Batman always trumped the films in, and do it in a way that doesn't come off as cheesy.

2. The Bat-Suit

Concept Art by Ritorian

Future Gotham also equals future tech, which is good both for the new Batman and for us. The new Bat-Suit, when compared to the previous incarnations offers a tremendous strength upgrade which allows Terry to go head to head in ways Bruce never could. It's not unlimited strength, but it does allow him to take on some giant thugs when spotted, and when you're just starting out as Batman...you're going to get spotted. No more Bat-grappling when you have rocket boosters on your heels and gliders to sweep across the night skies with. Hell, with this suit he can put his thumb on a glass window and hear a conversation being had on the other side! While he may not don as many of the classic gadgets as the Batman of yore, it's more than fair to say the suit itself in Batman Beyond IS a gadget...and quite an awesome one at that.

1. OLD BRUCE WAYNE.

It's been talked to death on this and several other blogs about how awesome this would be to see, and it bears repeating. Clint Eastwood and Michael Keaton always seem to be the go-to's for fans, but I think just about anyone could make the role fantastic. It's not about who plays the role, but how they play the role. You have a hardened old man in his twilight years fighting a battle against crime he is consistently losing as time progresses. Yet he continues, helps when he can, and fights crime for no other reason than to tell evil "F*** you. I'm still here." Play Old Bruce like that and you can't go wrong.

Any other things you wish to add or disagree with? Comment away!

Justice Magazine Portraits by Artgerm

Maybe its simply the format, but I absolutely love this series of portraits from Artgerm (aka Stanley Lau). Spotlighting the new 52 versions of the characters, the pieces mimic a newsstand magazine to a tee, including character specific bylines. Artgerm's digital work is impressive on its own, but there is just something about the format that makes me that extra bit of giddy. Supergirl is stunning, and Wonder Woman's "I'm gorgeous, but I could still kick your ass" expression is priceless.

Sadly, due to workload he won't be able to update this series for awhile, but at least we have these three to enjoy for the time being. You can head over to his Deviant Art page to find more of his work.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've been on a Superman high ever since that new Man of Steel trailer was released! It was packed full of some incredible stuff, and I imagine that's just the tip of the iceberg of what the movie is going to entail. These are exciting times we live in when it comes to movies, and these days the sky's the limit on what filmmakers can do. Hopefully Man of Steel has what it takes to blow our mind with Superman greatness.

In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

New Casting Confirms Plot Details for Brad Bird's TOMORROWLAND

$

There are a few more story details that have been revealed for Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof's upcoming sci-fi film Tomorrowland. They come from a recent casting announcement in which a young English actress by the name of Raffey Cassidy (Snow White and the Huntsman) has been cast as a robot child in the story. She will star alongside George Clooney as the lead, and Hugh Lowery as the villain.

So without further ado here are the details that THR had to offer,

Cassidy will play a young girl robot who has been around for decades. Also a key factor: She knows several fighting styles. She has a previous relationship with Clooney’s character, a bitter inventor.

This basically confirms the plot that was previously leaked out, but at the same time clarifies and adds a few new details. I imagine we'll get to see this little robot girl kick some ass. Here's the description of the story that was released a few months ago.

The “Tomorrowland” that they keep referring to in this break-down appears to be a place where science has blown past the world we live in, and when Frank Walker was a young man, he first encountered the promise of Tomorrowland at the 1964 World’s Fair.  David Nix was there, showing off his own work, and he told Walker to come back when he was older and his inventions actually worked.  A girl named Athena saw great promise in 11-year-old Frank, though, and she snuck him into Tomorrowland.  Eventually, Frank was discovered by Nix and thrown out, but not before learning that the girl he loved, Athena, was actually a robot.

By the time we meet Frank in the film, he’s much older, and George Clooney is set to play the part.  Nix is the role that Hugh Laurie is signed for, and by the point the main story of the film kicks in, Nix has been in charge of Disneyland for many years, and he’s become rotten, corrupt.  Athena, unchanged since Frank was a young man, plays a key role in the film, and the hero is a girl named Casey who has a quick scientific mind that becomes important as the story unfolds.  Nix is a guy who values technical accomplishment over creative thinking, and when he throws Frank out of Tomorrowland, he’s not alone.  Every creative thinker is banished, allowing Nix to focus purely on aesthetics and technical advancement for its own sake.

There's still a lot of mystery surrounding this film, it's an exciting project, and I'm looking forward to seeing what this talented team of filmmakers ends up doing with it!
