Disney Remaking PETE'S DRAGON

Disney has decided to remake their classic 1977 live-action/animated film Pete's Dragon. I can't really say that I'm a big fan of the original because I've probably only really seen once, maybe twice. What makes this production interesting is the person they hired to write it, David Lowery. Lowery is the writer and director of one of this years Sundance hits Ain't Them Bodies Saints which starred Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, and Ben Foster. This was a dark and gritty drama about an outlaw who escapes from prison to reunite with his wife and the daughter who he's never met.  So Lowery didn't seem like the kind of filmmaker I would ever seen take on something like Pete's Dragon. But that's what he's doing, and he'll be tackling it with his writing partner Toby Halbrooks.

The original film starred Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, Helen Reddy, Jim Dale, and Sean Marshall who played an orphan boy who comes to a town with his magical dragon, with his abusive adoptive parents chasing after him.

As of right now Lowery is just writing the script, but there's always the possibility that he could end up directing it as well. I guess it was only a matter of time before this movie got remade, I think Disney will eventually end up remaking everything in their movie library. Are there any die hard Pete's Dragon fans out there that are pissed off about this remake?

How Brad Bird Would Have Opened RETURN OF THE JEDI

Brad Bird is one of those directors I'd love to see make a Star Wars movie one day! At one point he was rumored to be directing Episode VII, but he's currently developing his new sci-fi film Tomorrowland. In a recent interview with Esquire, comedian Patton Oswalt recounted a conversation he had with Bird about how he would have opened Return of the Jedi, and it would have been badass! Bird has obviously given some thought as to how he could make Star Wars better, and this is his idea according to Oswalt,

I was talking with [director] Brad Bird one time, and he said it's like the beginning of Return of the Jedi. Luke shows up and he's a badass. He said they should've opened it with Luke in the swamp saying to Yoda, "You said 'Don't go.' I said 'Fuck you, I'm gonna go help my friends.' I went and got my hand cut off and my friends are in even worse trouble because of what I did. I fucked up everything." And then Yoda should have gone, "Now you're a Jedi. Now you're beyond the fear of failure. Now you're ready." That would have made it even cooler.

I'd love to see that scene play out! It would have set the tone for a much better Star Wars film. I mean, I loved Return of the Jedi, but let's face it, the way the movie was made so Lucas could sell more toys and merchandise.

What do you think of this alternate opening? Do you think it would have set a different and better path and tone for the story?

Here's our first look at Tina Fey in character on the set of The Muppets... Again! with Kermit the Frog. In the film she plays a Russian gulag prison guard.

The movie also stars Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, and Ray Liotta. It's set to hit theaters March 21st, 2014. Here's the synopsis:

Disney’s The Muppets …Again! takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine — the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit — and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.

DreamWorks Animation's TURBO - Full Theatrical Trailer

DreamWorks Animation's has released a full theatrical trailer for their upcoming CG animated racing snail adventure Turbo. It looks like a really good movie that could prove to be entertaining. I think it's something that kids and their parents could both enjoy.

It's got a great all-star voice cast that includes Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg, and Samuel L. Jackson. Here's the synopsis...

From the makers of Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, Turbo is a high-velocity 3D comedy about an underdog snail who kicks into overdrive when he miraculously attains the power of super-speed. But after making fast friends with a crew of streetwise, tricked-out es-car-goes, Turbo learns that no one succeeds on their own. So he puts his heart and shell on the line to help his pals achieve their dreams, before Turbo-charging his own impossible dream: winning the Indy 500.

DreamWorks Animation is going through some hard times right now, and a lot of people are getting laid off. One of their last films Rise of the Guardians didn't do so well at the box office, and there's a few other factors that play into it, so hopefully Turbo does well for them so they can get over this hump. Turbo is set to be released on July 19th, 2013.

TOMB RAIDER: I Am a Survivor Art by Omri Koresh

Survival is the name of the game in Tomb Raider, and nowhere is that illustrated better than this gorgeous take on Lara by Omri Koresh. The background feels like a living breathing world, and even the foliage is a standout. I feel like this rendition of Lara perfectly suits where she is at the close of Tomb Raider. Strong, able, and with just a hint of that confidence and swagger that we all grew to know and love in previous games. Omri did a fantastic job, and if you like it make sure to check out his gallery for more of his work!

Pixar's UP was such a great film, and the unlikely duo of Russell and Carl formed a very strong relationship. Here's a great piece of fan art created by Kristal Babich that pays a touching tribute to the film and the bond these two characters had.

The piece is called "It's Been An Adventure, Mr. Fredricksen," and it features Russell at Carl Fredricksen's funeral, several years after the events UP. It was also pointed out that he still has Ellie's grape soda bottlecap badge that Carl gave him.

GOOSEBUMPS Movie May Have a Director

We've been hearing about a big screen adaptation of R.L. Stine's Goosbumps book series for years, and now it looks like Sony Pictures is ready to hire a director. The studio is currently in talks with Rob Letterman to direct the feature. He seems like he would be the go to guy for a movie like this. He's previously directed films such as Shark Tale, Monsters Vs. Aliens, and Gulliver's Travels

There's no word on what book or storylines from the series they will focus on but I'm sure they've picked a good one to roll with. The Goosebumps series has sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, second only to the Harry Potter series in total sales. There's a huge audience out there for this. A lot of people grew up reading this series, so I think this could end up being a very successful movie franchise.

I enjoyed the books, and I love that it's like a Twilight Zone style series for kids.

In Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim we're going to see giant robots beating the hell of giant organic monsters that bleed. There's sure to be a huge mess in the aftermath. Well, there's a clean up crew for that! Warner Bros. tweeted out the image above recently showing the clean up crew hard at work, and it came with the following note...

Blue clean-up detail: an endless, thankless task.

And while were on the subject of giant monsters. I've also included a video from the set of Gareth Edwards Godzilla featuring the director of the film on the first day of shooting along with some set photos.

Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris ElbaRinko KikuchiCharlie Day, and Ron Perlman. The film is set to hit theaters July 12th, 2013.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even theJaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee —who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

New TRANSFORMERS 4 Plot Details Revealed

We've heard a lot of rumors about what Transformers 4 will be about, many of which director Michael Bay has said are false. We do know that the fourth film still takes place in the same universe as the previous three films, it's been made clear that the movie is not a reboot, it's a sequel, and it will be loaded with new characters, robots and robot designs.

The story takes place four years after the events in Dark of the Moon, and as of right now the movie stars Mark Wahlberg and Jack Reynor. We've now got some new solid story details that kind of explain what we have to look forward to with the story, it actually sounds like it could be really cool. The news comes from an announcement that the film will be shot in Detroit Michigan. Here are the details...

Transformers 4 picks up after the end of Transformers: Dark of the Moon after a battle left a city broken, but the world was saved by the Autobots.

As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet. However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control – all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs. The epic adventure and battle between good and evil, freedom and enslavement ensues.

I hope to hell that ancient Transformer menace is Unicron as previously rumored, because that would be awesome! What do you think about the plot details revealed here? Transformers 4 is set to hit theaters June 27th, 2014.

Ryan Reynolds Gives a DEADPOOL Update - "Studio is Reluctant"

Unfortunately it doesn't look like FOX is wanting to move forward on the Deadpool movie that we've all been anxiously waiting for. In a recent interview Ryan Reynolds was asked when the movie is coming, and this was his response...

It's up to the studio. The studio I think is reluctant to pull the trigger on such a hard Rated-R script. Then the guys who wrote it and the producers won't make it unless it's that hard and, you know, raunchy.

Even though the studio has got cold feet, at least Reynolds and the screenwriters of the film--Zombieland's Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick--want to make the movie right! That script was turned in last year, and the last director attached to the film, Tim Miller, said it was amazing.

I'm sure the movie will eventually get made, but I seriously doubt it will be the hard-R movie that the fans want to see. The studios always seem to get their way when it comes to these things.

BOND 24 Coming in 3 Years

The last bit of news we heard about MGM's Bond 24 was that Sam Mendes decided not to come back to direct it. As of right now the script is currently being written by John Logan, and I'd love to know where he's taking the story! MGM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gary Barber gave an update on the film confirming that they are on a hunt for a new director, and that the film will be released in about 3 years. Here's what he told Reuters in a recent interview...

We are very excited about the franchise, we look forward to announcing a director soon. We are currently developing the screenplay and working with our partners. We look forward to developing the script soon and signing a director. We are hoping within the next 3 years it will be released.

I'm excited to see where they end up taking James Bond next. Skyfall was a pretty awesome movie, and even though it's a little disappointing that Mendes won't be directing the next film, I'm confident that the studio will end up bringing on another great director to develop the 24th Bond movie. Who do you think would make a good director for the franchise?

March Madness Explained in STAR WARS Terms

I don't watch a lot of sports, and I'll be the first to admit that I've never really understood how this whole March Madness thing actually works. But a comedy group called Satire did a pretty good job explaining March Madness in Star Wars terms that a geek like me can understand. The video was directed by Nick Nielson who says,

It was either this or explain the Oscars through chocobo-farming.

It ended up being pretty entertaining, and I hope you enjoy it!

Here's three new photos from Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling's crazy cool looking action thriller Only God Forgives. A lot of the stuff we've seen from this movie so far features Gosling bloody, bruised, and swollen. One of these images shows him with his fists raised and ready to kick ass. The other images feature Vithaya Pansringarm drawing his sword and Kristin Scott Thomas. There's a little teaser clip that was released for the movie, and you can click here to check it out. Here's the synopsis...

Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.

Only God Forgives is set to premiere at The Cannes Film Festival before opening in May for everyone else to see. I'm really excited about this movie, it looks and sounds like it's going to be a brutally amazing flick!

New Poster for THE SHINING Doc ROOM 237 - Calumet Baking Powder

Later this month you'll finally be able to see the mind blowing documentary for The Shining, Room 237. If you're a fan of Stanley Kubrick's classic horror film, then this doc is a must watch! Thanks to io9 we have a new poster for the film that features an illustration created around "Calumet Baking Powder", which you see in the background of the film, but which could have a bigger meaning than what you might expect. It also features a silhouette of Apollo 11. What does Apollo 11 have to do with The Shining? It's all explained in depth in the doc, and you'll just have to wait to see!

As I've said before there's just so many awesome conspiracy theories packed into this movie, it will take multiple viewings to get all of the secrets that reside in the Overlook Hotel. Make sure to check out our review of the film here if you haven't already!

After the box office failure of Barry Lyndon, Stanley Kubrick decided to embark on a project that might have more commercial appeal. The Shining, Stephen King’s biggest critical and commercial success yet, seemed like a perfect vehicle. After an arduous production, Kubrick’s film received a wide release in the summer of 1980; the reviews were mixed, but the box office, after a slow start, eventually picked up. End of story? Hardly. In the 30 years since the film’s release, a considerable cult of Shining devotees has emerged, fans who claim to have decoded the film’s secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies. Rodney Ascher’s wry and provocative Room 237 fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick’s still-controversial classic.

The movie hits theaters on March 29th, 2013.

Want to see another awesome clip from G.I. Joe: Retaliation?! I watched it and I think it's something you'll want to see! The extended clip is 4-minutes long and features a great fight scene between Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee). From there it leads into that crazy cliff side ninja battle that we've seen bits and pieces of. It's awesomely action-packed so enjoy!

I've also included a couple of new photos that have been released of Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jay. The movie is set to hit theaters on March 29th, 2013!

In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy, Cobra, they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. Chu, and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick based on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe® characters.
