THE AVENGERS - Unlikely Cameo Revealed (Spoiler)

$

0

Jenny Agutter (Logan's Run, An American Werewolf In London) has a very small role in Marvel's The Avengers. During a recent interview with the Radio Times she may have let slip a MAJOR SPOILER revealing that a very important Marvel character may make a cameo appearance in the film.

Beware Spoilers

According to Bleeding Cool (via Blastr), the "major superhero in question is none other than the amazing Spider-Man himself!"
Here is the  excerpt from the interview:
As for Agutter, she’s about to metamorphose again to appear alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson in upcoming Hollywood blockbuster The Avengers.

“I’m sworn to secrecy! I wasn’t allowed a script until I got there, and when I did I felt like a complete child being on big sets and a huge parking lot full of Winnebagos.”

She does let slip that two of these housed Spider-Man and Iron Man; we suspect Agutter won’t able to avoid sci-fi conventions for much longer.

Spider-Man is owned by Sony and Marvel owns The Avengers, so is this comment a mistake on the part of Agutter or the interviewer? Could this be one of the most amazing cameos? What are your thoughts?

Sundance 2012 Review: SAVE THE DATE with Lizzy Caplan, Martin Starr, and Alison Brie

Anyone familiar with great television comedies of the last decade should be familiar with the main cast of Save The Date. The film stars Lizzy Caplan (Party Down), Martin Starr (Party Down, Freaks and Geeks), Alison Brie (Community), Geoffrey Arend (Super Troopers), and Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), and is one of two Lizzy Caplan films at this year's Sundance to feature a wedding theme - the other being Bachelorette. Despite the fantastic cast, I'm sad to say that this film didn't resonate with me.

The biggest problem with Save The Date is that I didn't feel like it added anything new to this type of story. We've seen it hashed and rehashed tons of times before - a young woman rejects her current life in favor of a spontaneous new relationship - and even this week, I've seen two variations on it with Hello I Must Be Going and The First Time. Director Michael Mohan failed to do much to make this movie memorable, and it's truly a shame that such a talented cast is brought together for a movie that ultimately falls flat.

Caplan doesn't quite have the charm in a lead role as, say, Rashida Jones in Celeste & Jesse Forever, but she's armed with a winning smile and has a lot of natural talent, which has taken her career in some great directions. Here, though, her character is so messed up that it's hard to justify either her decisions or the love shown her by multiple male characters throughout. On an acting level, she was great. But she's the lead here, and I could never really get past her personality flaws to connect with her. Alison Brie was solid as the uptight sister too busy planning her own wedding to invest in her sister's issues, and Martin Starr plays Brie's fiance with a mixture of comedy and drama that has defined his career so far.

Thematically, there isn't much going on here beyond what's on the surface. There is a lot of family drama, both between Caplan and Brie's sister characters and between Brie and Starr's fiance relationship. There's a love triangle between Caplan, the shunned boyfriend, and the new boyfriend. But even with all of those plot points, it still seemed as if I'd seen this movie before. "Aspirations are totally overrated," one of the characters says. Perhaps the director should have aspired to make something that would stand out among the thousands of movies that have the same tone and feel as this one.

Here's the official synopsis:

Sarah finds herself caught in an intense postbreakup rebound with new infatuation Jonathan after tragically breaking the heart of rocker Kevin. Always one to give Sarah life advice is her sister Beth, who is diligently planning her upcoming wedding to apprehensive fiancé Andrew. Both sisters fumble through the bumpy emotional landscape of modern-day relationships, forced to relearn how to love and be loved.

Filmmaker Michael Mohan returns to the Sundance Film Festival—he made his feature debut with One Too Many Mornings in NEXT in 2010. From a screenplay he wrote with famed graphic novelist Jeffrey Brown and cowriter Egan Reich, this bittersweet story about the trials of maturing love carefully balances intimate moments of pain and happiness. Delicately captured by cinematographer Elisha Christian, with standout lead performances by Lizzy Caplan and Alison Brie, Save the Date charms anyone lost in his or her own state of love.

We have some new images from Neighborhood Watch and Lovelace, thanks to ComingsoonJonah Hill tweeted an image (above) from the set of his next movie, Neighborhood Watch. The cast includes Hill, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Richard Ayoade, Rosemarie DeWitt, Will Forte, and Billy CrudupAkiva Schaffer (Hot Rod) directed the sci-fi comedy, about "a neighborhood watch crew that is secretly an excuse for local men to hang out together. Things take a turn for the serious, though, when the team accidentally uncovers a plot to destroy the world." Filming has wrapped on the comedy that opens on July 27th. The film sounds like fun and has a great cast.

Next we have two photos of Amanda Seyfried filming a scene for Lovelace on the set in Redondo Beach, California. Seyfried stars opposite Peter Sarsgaard, Sharon Stone, Juno Temple, Wes Bentley, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, James Franco, Eric Roberts, Adam Brody, and Demi Moore in the biopic.

Based on Eric Danville's bio The Complete Linda Lovelace, the film follows Linda Boreman's rise to fame as iconic porn star Linda Lovelace of 1972's Deep Throat and her subsequent transformation into feminist, anti-porn activist Linda Marchiano. The story is told through the perspective of three interviewers at various stages of her life. Check out the images below and share your thoughts:

SuperHeroHype came down the wire with the news that Hot Toys is releasing a 1/6th scale collectable Bane action figure! While I don't know why they felt the need to remove his head from the picture, judging from the outfit from the rest of the figure I imagine his face is unsurprisingly going to look like this...

Hmm....seems as though they are forgetting a glove on his right hand. DEFECT! DO IT AGAIN!!!!!

The gang at HowItShouldHaveEnded.com have put together another hilarious video. This time they have taken on one of my favorite shows, Lost. As usual, the animationn does a good job of capturing the actors and characters.

Here is a description:

You're in Hurley's world now! Originally released back with the LOST HISHE, this alternate short was made after the series finale. If Hurley gets the island, what did he and Ben do after everyone left to keep things interesting? probably a song/photo montage... :)

The 84th Annual Academy Award Nominations are in - HUGO Leads with 11 Nominations!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially announced the nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards, and I'm happy with the outcome. The one compliant I have is that Michael Shannon wasn't nominated for Best Actor for his role in Take Shelter. In my opinion that was the best performance I've seen all year. Andy Serkis also didn't get his nomination for playing Ceaser in Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Hugo led the pack with 11 solid nominations, followed by The Artist with 10. Both Moneyball and War Horse nabbed six, and The Descendants and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ended up with five, but Fincher got snubbed for Best Director.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Pictures From 70s Daredevil That Never Was

$

Blastr posted these images up yesterday featuring former wife of David Bowie and mother to Duncan Jones (Source Code, Moon) Angela Bowie as the Black Widow. This was intended for a television show in the 70's featuring The Black Widow and Benny Carruthers (The Dirty Dozen, His son was in Megadeth for a bit) as Daredevil! Bowie explains her intentions below.

"I received permission from Stan Lee to have the rights to Daredevil and Black Widow for a year. We were unable to place the series. Actor, writer, Benny Carruthers and I did the photo shoot with TerryO'Neill and Natasha Kornilkoff costume designer and Barbara Daly - make-up in London and that was all that ever happened. Unfortunately at that time it was considered too difficult and expensive to film, special effects etc."

A Daredevil TV show being too expensive? Courtrooms and red sunglasses must have been a hot commodity those days! Whatever the case, this project never came to be...for better or worse tyrants?

THE CROW Reboot Back On Track!

ComicBookMovie is reporting that The Weinstien Company and Relativity Media have buried the legal hatchet and decided to further collaborate on the reboot of cult classic The Crow. Is there any bad news? Bradley Cooper dropped out of the leading role, but that just makes my day better!

Seriously though, that's for the best in my opinion. I'd rather see Clint Howard take Brandon Lee's place before Mr. Hangover.

The best choice though? Personally I think they should look into Rain (Ninja Assassin, Speed Racer) taking the role. That would be all too bad ass.

Yes? No?

Blu-Ray Review: REAL STEEL Offers Action With A Human Element

$
0
0

Real Steel arrived today on Blu-Ray Hi-Def and DVD from DreamWorks Studios! Visit the not-so-distant future where robots have replaced boxers in the ring. Join a father and son as they take a heartwarming journey to find success and to build the relationship they never had. Directed by Shawn Levy (Night At the Museum franchise, Date Night) and based on a screenplay by John Gatins (Coach Carter, Summer Catch) the action film stars Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, and Anthony Mackie

I saw this film in theaters and was pleasantly surprised. I was not sure how well Levy could do with a film that is more action than comedy, but he pulled it off. The film's pacing was a bit slow at times, but the fight scenes were well-worth the price of admission. The film was shot digitally, and it looked wonderful on the big screen and Blu-ray. While watching the Bonus Features, I was reminded of how important shooting in digital can be for filmmakers. Having a digital pipeline allows you to check the day's shots to make sure you have everything you need to edit the film and if not, make immediate changes without losing much time. Definitely check out the "Making of Metal Valley" to see more about that process.

The movie was not made with only visual effects, Levy had his effects team build life-size robots at the recommendation of producer Steven Spielberg. What was cool about the robots, is that they each had unique personalities. These personalities could be seen through their design. The "Building the Bots" bonus feature was awesome to see real robots come to life. It was cool to see the real robots being manned by real people. This small aspect of the film made a huge difference to me. The lead robot character of Adam came to life on screen as a result.

Having grown up watching boxing, it was awesome to see Sugar Ray Leonard, who served as a boxing consultant. This added legitimacy to the fight sequences. The moves that you see on the screen are heavily inspired by Leonard. If you love Rocky, Warrior, or The Fighter, then you will love this movie. For those of you who can not stomach the blood of boxing, Real Steel is perfect. The fight scenes are just as powerful, but seeing the robotic parts being smashed apart is different than if you saw blood.

The cast is great, but the best elements for me are Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo. The two have a great chemistry on screen, and are believable as father and son. Goyo has a long career ahead of him, and I hope to see him in more roles. He has a lot of charisma and personality, and when he appears on screen he does a great job of holding his own with seasoned actors. I had hoped to see more of Anthony Mackie in the film, but his part was not as extensive. Kevin Durand did a good job with his southern accent, and is believable as a bad guy as usual.  I have mentioned some of the bonus features of the film already, and they are solid in comparison to others on many discs. What I loved the most about the features, was how involved Levy was throughout. He did not just give his time for a commentary, but was involved in giving descriptions of the deleted scenes. His energy and passion for filmmaking can easily be seen, which is cool to me as a film lover.

Sundance 2012 Review: SMASHED with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul

$
0
0

Smashed was one of those few films at the Sundance Film Festival that I left satisfyingly uplifted after a heavy barrage of drama. Usually the films here at Sundance end on a dark and depressing note. I'm not saying this film didn't have any dark moments; after all, it is a drama that deals with the heavy and sensitive issues of alcoholism.

The story follows a character named Kate played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim v the World). It revolves around her coming to terms with her problems with drinking, and ends up taking the audience on a journey of witnessing this person crawl out of the dark abyss of the demon in the bottle after hitting rock bottom. For anyone that has ever had an addiction, you know hard it can be to stop.

This was a wonderfully inspiring film that touches on some of life's major issues that some of us may have faced in one way or another throughout our lives, so it's something I think the audience can relate to. This is a heavy film to watch, but even though the subject matter seems gloomy, there's a light at the end of the tunnel scattered with some spots of good humor, and one very creepy moment. I loved that this movie had an uplifting ending, because I was so afraid that it wouldn't. You never know at Sundance! It just felt good to leave the theater with a sense of hope.

The film was directed by James Ponsoldt and he really did a amazing job capturing the heartache and pain of life while keeping a positive optimistic attitude. Winstead was incredible in this film and gives one of the best performances I've seen so far at the festival. I also believe its the best performance of her career. I was truly impressed by the acting she did. The film also starred Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) who did a great job in the film as well. He played Kate's husband. The guy has got some great acting skills, and I hope to see him start taking on more feature film roles.

I think Smashed is a film eventually worth checking out. It really was a very well made film with powerful performances and a fantastic story.

Here's the Synopsis:

Kate and Charlie like to have a good time. Their marriage thrives on a shared fondness for music, laughter . . . and getting smashed. When Kate’s partying spirals into hard-core asocial behavior, compromising her job as an elementary schoolteacher, something’s got to give. But change isn’t exactly a cakewalk. Sobriety means she will have to confront the lies she’s been spinning at work, her troubling relationship with her mother, and the nature of her bond with Charlie.

Many films indulge the dramatic highs and lows of addiction. Refreshingly, Smashed is interested in the unglamorous middle path—what stumbling through recovery looks like. As Kate tests new boundaries and shoulders the consequences of her choices, this subtle story of imperfect transformation taps into truths about the challenges and losses intrinsic to living life honestly. Genuine performances and a grounded sense of place create an authentic, textured world where three-dimensional characters—neither all bad nor all good—occupy the uncomfortable grey zone of being human.

Here is the first clip from the horror comedy Grabbers, thanks to Bloody Disgusting (via Twitch). The film is premiering at Sundance this year, and looks like a lot of fun. Jon Wright directed the film that stars Richard Coyle, Ruth Bradley, and Russell Tovey. The film is reportedly said to be "Walking Dead meets Tremors, with tentacles." Grabbers takes place in "a sleepy Irish fishing village forced to fend off a blood-sucking sea creature."

I love horror movies that have a mix of comedy and cool characters. Check out this fun clip below and share your thoughts.

Sundance 2012 Review: BONES BRIGADE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY

$
0
0

Due to my lack of research preparing for the Sundance Film Festival, Bones Brigade: An Autobiography wasn't even on my radar. When I first saw the title I wasn't even sure if it was the "Bones Brigade" skateboarding team that I grew up knowing, reading about, and watching. Then when I saw that it was directed by Stacy Peralta I knew that it was, and I was excited as hell to see it!

The Bones Brigade is a skateboarding team that was organized by 70's skateboarding legend Stacy Peralta in the early 80's. He set out to start his own team of skaters, gathered together a group of no-name kids that had a deep passion for skateboarding, and mentored them to the top. This team produced some of the greatest, most legendary skateboarders of all time including Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, and Rodney Mullen, who I admired as a kid growing up in the 80's. These guys took skateboarding to a whole new level of awesomeness, brought the sport into the mainstream, and turned it into a booming business that they could make a ton of money from. For example, Hawk was pulling in $20K a month right out of high school. These were the people that invented modern skateboarding as we know it, and everything we know today, including all of the tricks and the language of the sport.

This documentary is my favorite film from the festival so far. Peralta is a hell of a great filmmaker who is behind several of my other favorite docs such as Riding Giants, Dog Town and the Z Boys, and Crips and Bloods: Made In America. This is also my kind of thing. I have a deep love for film, but I also have a love of surfing and skateboarding because that's what I grew up with; that's what I grew up doing. I love that culture and lifestyle, and it's a lifestyle that I still live to this day. I don't think I'll ever grow out of it. I knew all about these guys growing up. I read the skateboarding magazines. I witnessed the sport changing. It was an amazing time in history to live through. It was awesome to be a fan at that time, and it's so cool to see what was accomplished by these talented individuals.

This film gives the audience an intimate look into each of the lives of the main figures involved with the Bone Brigade. Growing up I use to think these guys lived perfect lives and were invincible, but this doc reveals that they weren't. They were people just like you and me that had to deal with overcoming their own issues. They are human, and I was able relate with almost all of them, especially for the fact that my way of thinking is unconventional just like them, and my life is driven by the passion for the things I love. I immersed myself and my talents into things that other people might feel is a waste of time, but I do it anyway. I've always pushed forward and worked on doing what I love to do. That's just what you do when your passionate about something, when it's in your blood what can you do other than what you love?

There was a lot of drama, humor, and great information packed into this film. It was loaded with some radical skateboarding footage from the 80's and early 90's, including some of the first footage of groundbreaking tricks like the Olie. It also has these wonderful deep personal interviews with most of the men that led the world into this skateboarding revolution. I loved seeing and hearing the stories of how the Bones Brigade actually came together and seeing each individual personality come to life for me on the big screen. All of these years that I followed these skaters who I respected, I never knew what they were really like, and who they really were until now. There is an amazing mix of wonderful personalities here, all of which you can help but love and respect. Watching the film was an incredible experience for me.

Any fan of Skateboarding is going to love the hell out of this film. Even if you're not into skating it's a fantastically fascinating documentary that's a must see for all of you.

Here's the Synopsis:

Today skateboarding is omnipresent. Take a walk down any street in any town, and you are destined to see someone riding a skateboard. Well, it wasn’t always like that. In the early ’80s, skateboarding was fading away until Stacy Peralta brought a profoundly talented group of outsiders together and dubbed them the Bones Brigade. This documentary chronicles their epic rise, using awesome archival footage and moving first-person accounts from Brigade members Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, and Rodney Mullen, among others. Through passion, drive, creativity, and a surprising sense of teamwork, they revitalized the sport and influenced generations to come.

Peralta brings his fourth documentary to the Festival and continues to display an uncanny knack for fusing style and substance in his films. BONES BRIGADE works on a number of levels and will blow the minds of anyone who grew up emulating these guys, but it also resonates for anyone who ever found a family or a purpose in an unexpected place.

The Evil Dead remake from director Fede Alvarez is looking for a new leading lady. Lily Collins (Mirror, Mirror) has been forced to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts.
Jeff Sneider from Variety (via /Film) tweeted the following:
“Again, in case you missed it, LILY COLLINS is OUT of THE EVIL DEAD reboot due to a scheduling issue. Agents, start your engines…”
Collins was reportedly set to play "the new Ash" in the films, a role made famous by Bruce Campbell in Sam Raimi's originals. Alvarez and team will have plenty of time to find a suitable (if not better) replacement in time for the scheduled April 12, 2013 release. The script was co-written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult) did a rewrite.
Here’s the synopsis:
Mia and David, estranged siblings who have recently lost their mother (Mia’s taking it the hardest being that she’s the one who spent most days at the hospital watching her mother deteriorate) have reunited, along with some old friends and his David’s fiancee, for an intervention at THAT old cabin. It’s here that the near rehabilitated Mia will also toss the last of her drugs down the well and finally go cold turkey.

This news is actually good in my mind. Collins would have been an interesting lead, but I thnk the character should be a bit older. I like the idea of a female version of Ash (if that is the case actually). There are a few names that come to mind to fill the role - Noomi Rapace, Elizabeth Banks, Charlize Theron
What are your thoughts on this news? Who would you like to see in the role?

Kevin Smith earned a lot of press at Sundance last year, when he bought Red State for $20. Today, we have some more news from the filmmaker thanks to The Film Stage. SModCast Pictures has partnered with Phase 4 and is set to release twelve independent films a year.
Four of the films will be taken on the road, much like Red State was. The director has made the following offer in a recent statement:
I honestly cannot wait to start finding flicks to take out on the road. Live action, animation, big budget, micro-budget, comedy, drama, horror – I want you to send ‘em all toSMacquisitions@phase4films.com! Come join the circus!
Many people have not been happy with Smith since last year's debacle. What are your thoughts on this news?

Here is the official press release:
Park City, UT (January 23, 2012) – Berry Meyerowitz, President & CEO of Phase 4 Films, announced today that the company has entered into an exclusive distribution deal with SModcast Pictures, the production company founded and run by filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Red State). Through the deal, Phase 4 obtains exclusive rights in the U.S. and Canada to exhibit and distribute up to twelve films per year under the newly created “Kevin Smith and SModcast Pictures Presents” label. Phase 4 will release four of these films theatrically each year, which will include a live tour with Kevin Smith, similar to that of Red State, with the remainder of films being released via all other traditional and digital platforms.

“We had a terrific experience working with Kevin and his team on Red State in Canada, and are thrilled to be embarking on this new venture with him. This label will connect filmmakers and producers with a rabid audience of movie fans that only Kevin Smith can deliver,” said Meyerowitz.

Phase 4 and Kevin Smith will consider movies from all budget levels to release under the label, to form a handpicked collection of unique independent films that resonate with Smith’s and SModcast’s audience. The selected films and filmmakers will also be promoted via Kevin’s vast social and traditional media reach, which includes almost 2,000,000 Twitter followers and nearly 700,000 Facebook friends. Phase 4 and SModCo plan to include an interactive component as well, allowing fans the opportunity to vote for the movie tour to come to their city.

“I had the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire career touring Red State last year,” said Smith. “Watching the movie with an enthusiastic audience and then doing a longer Q&A than the flick itself, jumping on the tour bus and waking up in another city where we’d do it all over again – it felt less like boring ol’ film exhibition and more like punk rock. We learned (and made) lots touring Red State, so now, SModcast Pictures wants to put that experience to good use for other films and filmmakers on smaller road shows for their flicks. We’ll do four or five cities per film, where I’ll intro the movie and do a Q&A with the filmmakers after the screening. At SModcast Pictures, we aim to be the Island of Misfit Toys for flicks!”
Are you looking forward to seeing films from Smodcast and Phase 4?
