Sundance 2012 Review: THE RAID - Badass Action-Packed Spectacular

$

I don't know what's going to top this film. The Raid is honestly one of the most incredibly awesome action films I think I've ever seen. I heard a ton of great things about this movie before I actually ended up seeing it, but nothing I or anyone else says can prepare you for the magnitude of this epic action film. I just know one thing... anyone that enjoys watching entertaining action movies, you're going to love this. It's unlike anything you've ever seen before. The movie comes from Merantau director Gareth Evans, and he did a hell of a great job.

The story is fairly simple. It follows a S.W.A.T. team as they enter a slum apartment building to capture a ruthless mobster. Shortly after they enter the building, their plan goes to hell when the inhabitants of the building come after them to kill them all. It just so happens that almost all the people in the building are violent martial arts machete-swinging, machine gun-toting dealers, thugs, and killers. 95% of the film takes place inside this building, and the whole time these guys are fighting for their lives. The movie has some incredibly intense moments, and I loved every minute of it.

The movie wastes no time jumping into the action, and once it starts it doesn't stop. The action, fight sequences, and choreography are brilliantly executed. They crazy thing is, these action sequences only get better and more badass as the film progresses. It's absolutely relentless, and it never lets up. It's interesting how the film starts out with a bunch of guys invading this building in full S.W.A.T. gear with automatic weapons; as the movie plays out they lose men and guns, and it eventually turns into a crazy blood filling knife and machete fight. The fighting then devolves down to just fists and brute strength. Everything leads up to one of the most epic fight scenes I've think I've ever seen in a film. The crowd excitedly clapped and cheered when it was over, including myself. How couldn't I? You would to if you saw what I saw, and hopefully one day soon you will!

We were lucky enough to have a fun audience in attendance, throughout the film they were gasping, moaning, and cheering with glee, with smiles on their faces. I highly recommend you see this movie, and if at all possible see it on the big screen! Watching this movie on your TV screen just wont be the same.

You need to see this movie! I promise that you'll love it. I just got out of the movie, and I can't wait to see it again. I just wish I could see the movie with each and every one of you so I can watch you experience this mind-blowing movie going experience.

Here's the synopsis:

Deep in the heart of Jakarta's slums lies an impenetrable safe house for the world's most dangerous killers and gangsters. Until now, the rundown apartment block has been considered untouchable to even the bravest of police. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite swat team is tasked with raiding the safe house in order to take down the notorious drug lord that runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, the building's lights are cut and all the exits blocked. Stranded on the 6th floor with no way out, the unit must fight their way through the city's worst to survive their mission. Director Gareth Evans (Merantau) and rising martial- arts star Iko Uwaisreunite in this adrenaline-fueled action film.

Sundance 2012 Review: CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER with Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg

$

Every year I've come to The Sundance Film Festival there's been a great and entertaining romantic film/comedy. This year I believe that film is Celeste and Jesse Forever, which stars Rashida Jones and Andy Samburg as a couple trying to figure out where their relationship is after they got married young and separated after 6 years. The story is unique in the fact that even after they separate, they still remain best friends who live together and hang out everyday. Of course things start to get complicated, and they are forced to deal with certain issues that pop up in their lives when they start to see other people.

I've been hearing mixed reviews from people up here at the festival about this movie, but I actually really enjoyed it. I thought is was both funny and heartfelt. The movie deals with issues that I think a lot of people can relate to. I think that one of the main things about the movie I liked is that I was able to connect with the story because I've gone through similar emotions and feelings that these characters were going through. I also felt like it offered up a little help and advice, giving us a point of view and perspective on life that we might not be able to see while living in the moment of what we are going through. It's not easy dealing with certain issues, but this shows that we can find humor in everything life has to throw at us. It's all about being happy in the end.

Both Jones and Samburg were fantastic in the film, and I enjoyed watching them play these characters. They both fit the roles so well, and even though they are known for their comedy, they did a fine job mixing in their style of humor with their dramatic performances. The film was co-written by Jones and Will McCormack, and wonderfully directed by Lee Toland Kriger (The Vicious Kind). It also stars Elijah Wood, Emma Roberts, Eric Christian Olsen, and Ari Graynor

I'm not sure how big of a release this movie will get, but in my opinion Celeste and Jesse Forever was a fantistic and heartfelt humorous film that you're sure to enjoy. I hope you take the time to watch it when it eventually gets released.

Here's the Synopsis for the film:

Celeste and Jesse met in high school and got married young. They laugh at the same jokes and finish each other’s sentences. They are forever linked in their friends’ minds as the perfect couple—she, a high-powered businesswoman and budding novelist; he, a free spirit who keeps things from getting boring. Their only problem is that they have decided to get divorced. Can their perfect relationship withstand this minor setback?

Jan De Bont Directing Remake of Johnny Cash's FIVE MINUTES TO LIVE

Sundance is not only the place to see some of the hottest movies; it's also a place where deals are made. Deadline reports that Joseph and Jack Nasser have teamed with Jan De Bont (Speed) to direct a remake of Five Minutes to Live, based on the 1961 Johnny Cash film. Casting is set to get underway immediately.

Raul Inglis (Transparency) penned the story that follows "two men as they execute a terrifying bank robbery. One guys holds the bank manager’s wife hostage and the other tells the manager she’ll be killed in five minutes unless he transfers money to an account of their choosing." Five Minutes will be financed by Nasser Entertainment/Nasser Group North. North American rights will be overseen by Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group.

The Nassers executive produced another film currently playing at Sundance, the Jamie Travis-directed phone sex comedy For A Good Time, Call… Justin Long, Ari Graynor, Lauren Anne Miller, Mark Webber, James Wolk, Nia Vardalos, and Mimi Rogers star, with Seth Rogen making a cameo. De Bont directed such films as Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of LifeThe Haunting, and Twister

This sounds like a interesting story, and if they can get a great cast it will likely be good. De Bont has a good handle on action, so I am excited to see him back behind the camera. What are your thoughts on this news?

Sundance 2012 Review: BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD

$

0

Though all films are technically "unique," Beasts of the Southern Wild deserves that title perhaps more than most. Directed by Benh Zeitlin and shot with non-trained actors, the film is told through the eyes of a six-year-old girl named Hushpuppy in the Louisiana bayou. At times feeling like a documentary because of the real-life locations decimated by Hurricane Katrina, the story revolves around a massive storm tearing through the area and the relationship between Hushpuppy, her father, and the community around them provides the center point for the movie.

Though the film has a central plot, it's not really a traditional story. It's very ethereal, and in periodic narrations - many of which include wise-beyond-her-years sayings that are supposed to resonate like, "When you're small, you've gotta fix what you can" - Hushpuppy reveals that she likes to commune with nature, listening to the life forces of random animals and plant life. There's all kinds of talk about the end of the world, cave drawings, an eccentric boat captain who hoards discarded chicken biscuit wrappers, and giant creatures who were frozen during the ice age who return to life and stalk the characters for the duration of the film. Sound weird? That's not the half of it.

The cinematography seems to mirror the wild lifestyle of the film's characters, shaking and snaking through woods and brambles attempting to keep up with the protagonist. She's a precocious girl, trained by her father in the ways of survival (think of last year's Hanna, but not nearly as intense), and the atmosphere and dialogue contributes to a real sense of place that is unlike any I've ever seen on film. A storm sequence early in the movie has some incredible sound design, transitioning from the crashing thunder and rushing water to a peaceful, quiet dripping as the scene turns to the aftermath.

The locations and devastation hit a bit too close to home sometimes, with Hushpuppy and her father cruising around in a fishing boat made out of a truck bed. There is trash and debris everywhere, and if absolutely nothing else, the film provides a gut-punching reminder of the horror some people in America actually live through. But that's not the point of the movie - the residents of "The Bathtub," the small community in which the film takes place, love it there and don't want to leave, even in the face of the coming storm. A subplot involving a mandatory evacuation brings a bit more of a political slant into the story, and, more importantly, allows Hushpuppy to discover her true identity when it is stripped away from her. (It should be mentioned that the young star, Quvenzhane Wallis, owns the screen for every frame she's on it.)

All that being said, this is definitely not my kind of movie. It's much too heady for my tastes, and while I was swept away with the look of the movie, the story and characters never really connected with me. It's a bold movie, especially for a first time filmmaker, but the minutae was lost on me.

Apparently audiences gave Beasts of the Southern Wild a standing ovation at its premiere here, and buyers are scrambling to pick it up. I have no idea why, though - there's no way this can ever be marketed as a successful commercial film, and it's a story that seems perfectly confined to a festival crowd and playing to audiences seemingly bred to appreciate it.

Ryan Murphy and APOLLO 18 Writer Team For Sci-Fi Horror Feature For Sony

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has joined forces with Apollo 18 scribe Brian Miller on a feature film. Variety (via The Film Stage) reports that the duo will write a sci-fi horror feature for Sony. The project will be produced by Murphy and Drive producer John Palermo. At this time there are very few details about the project, but we will keep you updated as news becomes available.

Even though Murphy is responsible for Glee and Apollo 18 did not fare well, I have hope for this project. I was a fan of Murphy since he did Nip/Tuck, and I love American Horror Story. Let's hope that this will be a good movie that horror fans can enjoy!

Julia Roberts, Alec Baldwin, Jim Parsons, and Matt Bomer Join THE NORMAL HEART

We have the second bit of news relating to a new project from Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) today. THR is reporting that Julia Roberts, Alec Baldwin, Matt Bomer, and Jim Parsons are set to star in an adaptation of Larry Kramer's semi-autobiographical play The Normal Heart. Kramer wrote the screenplay for the drama, which is being produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B company.
Here is the description of the film:
"The Normal Heart is the explosive drama about our most terrifying and troubling medical crisis today: the AIDS epidemic. It tells the story of very private lives caught up in the heartrendering ordeal of suffering and doom - an ordeal that was largely ignored for reasons of politics and majority morality."
Mark Ruffalo takes the lead as Ned Weeks. Roberts plays Emma Brookner, "a wheel-chair bound doctor who is one of the only doctors in New York talking the new disease seriously." Baldwin will play Weeks' brother, "a lawyer having a hard time dealing with his sibling's sexuality." Bomer's character is Felix Turner, "a gay fashion journalist who becomes Week’s boyfriend and tragically contracts the disease," while Parsons is reprising his Broadway role as "a Southerner who is a gay activist and part of a gay men’s health crisis group."
This sounds like a film that will require a tissue box to see. I like the cast, and will add this to my list of dramas to look out for. It may not be geeky, but keep in mind it stars the Hulk (Ruffalo) and Sheldon (Parsons) from The Big Bang Theory. Bomer is great in White Collar, and I am interested in seeing him in more feature roles.

Sundance 2012 Review: THE PACT - Supernatural Murder Mystery

$

One thing I enjoy most about coming to The Sundance Film Festival is you never really know what you are getting yourself into when you commit to seeing a movie. All I knew about The Pact before I saw was that it was part of the Midnight selection at the festival and that it was a horror film, so as a fan of horror I was interested to see what this turned out to be. Like every film I see at Sundance I had no expectations going into this movie, but ultimately, I left theater having been very entertained.

The story is basically a supernatural murder mystery that follows a girl who moves into the house of her dead mother, who she didn't have the best relationship with. As she's living in the home, extremely creepy and unexplained things begin to happen to her and to those around her. This leads her to start investigating why she is going through this insanity, and she starts digging into her mother's past. Thanks to the help of an abusive, attention-getting ghost, she begins to uncover certain clues to her forgotten past that ultimately reveal a terrible secret that's been hidden from her for years.

I really enjoyed the movie and thought is was better than most major studio horror films being released these days. Just because I liked it doesn't mean it didn't have it's faults though. The script has some issues. There were holes leaving a few things unexplained. Some of the acting was a little off and I didn't really care for the last few seconds of the film because I had no idea what it meant. Other than that, I enjoyed the ride, and for me... when it comes to horror films, that's all that matters.

The movie had some great, effective, scary moments, but what I liked most about the movie was that it felt like a classic ghost story, without all the blood and gore. Instead it focused on unraveling a mystery and messing with the minds of the audience. It kept my interest from start to finish, and I really liked the mystery behind it. I really had no idea what was coming or what the big reveal was going to be, but I ended up being surprised and satisfied.

The film was written and directed by Nicholas McCarthy and it stars Caity Lotz, who was actually the best actor in the film. I thought she did a very solid job, and would like to see her do more stuff. She seems like she could make a solid female action hero. The reason I say that is because of the way she carried herself in the film and the confidence she displayed.

I haven't heard a lot of people talk about this film, but there were a few in the audience that didn't seem to care for it. This movie obviously isn't for everyone, but if you like watching horror movies, then I'm pretty sure that The Pact is something you will enjoy watching.

Here's the synopsis:

Annie returns home to attend her much-despised mother’s funeral as a favor to her older sister. Sleeping in her old bedroom, Annie senses something unfamiliar in the house. She enlists the help of a local cop and a clairvoyant to answer some questions surrounding her mother’s death. As long-repressed nightmares begin to haunt Annie’s life again, an unsettling presence emerges in her childhood home.

Based on a short film that premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, Nicholas McCarthy’s The Pact penetrates beneath your skin from the opening drone of its score, with an uneasiness that grows steadily with every unsettling twist. McCarthy’s debut feature modernizes the classic haunted house story by sharply mixing genre elements to keep the audience always on their toes. Cinematographer Bridger Nielson’s camera stalks badass heroine Caity Lotz, both in sudden action and in silent terror, as she uncovers the dark mysteries behind each door.

Len Wiseman Gives TOTAL RECALL Update Revealing When First Trailer Will Arrive

Underworld: Awakening has been doing well at the box office this weekend. Director Len Wiseman was doing press for that film, and gave an update on his Total Recall remake in an interview with Collider (via CBM). Wiseman talked about his editing process for the remake, and revealed that he is currently working on the director's cut - which is about two hours long. He also talked about when fans will finally see a trailer for the film, and why they will be excited.

Below is an excerpt from the interview:

Do you know when we’ll see the first trailer for Total Recall?

I’ve seen it, and it’s great. I believe it will hit in March. I could be wrong, but I think March.

Where are you at now in the editing process?

I am two days away from turning in my director’s cut. I’m actually just doing some finishing touches on it. So, I’m done with that, and the studio takes a look at it fairly soon. So far, it’s actually been a very fun process. There’s a lot of excitement around it, and I’m very happy with it.

How long is your cut at this point?

I think we’re close to two hours, but it’s not all completely assembled. We still have a lot of the visual effects shots that we’re putting in, last minute. I’ll be here for about 20 hours today, and another 20 hours tomorrow.

Is there anything that you’re most excited for fans to see?

I would say how much it really plays with fantasy versus reality, in a way that I wanted to dive into a little bit more. It’s a thing I’ve always been fascinated about with Philip K. Dick’s story and the concept itself. It really has to operate on two playing fields, at any given time. It’s either the fantasy or reality. That’s the thing that I think is the most exciting. It’s got a load of really funaction sequences and visuals, and a whole new world to experience as well, that is really fun, but what makes that all super-engaging is this constant mystery of what world we’re existing in, whether it’s his fantasy or reality.

The action thriller stars Colin FarrellKate BeckinsaleJessica BielBryan CranstonJohn Cho, and Bill Nighy. Here's the official synopsis for the film released by Sony Pictures:

"Total Recall" is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

Total Recall is scheduled to hit theaters August 3rd, 2012. I am looking forward to seeing this, and can't wait for a trailer. What are your thoughts on this news?

Anchor Bay Buys Slasher Films' NOTHING TO FEAR

Guns N Roses guitarist Slash has a new film company called Slasher Films, and they sold their first film at this year's Sundance. Comingsoon reports that Anchor Bay is set to distribute Nothing to Fear.

Here is the official press release:

Anchor Bay Films announced today the pick up of Slasher Films’ Nothing to Fear. Slasher Films is the new horror label conceived by legendary guitar hero Slash and the producing team of Rob Eric and Academy Award™ winning producer Michael Williams (Session 9, Transsiberian, The Fog of War). Nothing to Fear is the first film to be produced in the Slasher Films slate and is based on an actual town in Kansas, which, according to legend, is one of the seven gateways to Hell. The film will be directed by Anthony Leonardi III. Leonardi has been the lead creature artist and storyboard artist for such films as Constantine, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Rango and the upcoming 47 Ronin. His vision and tenacity have made him one of the most talked about new directors. Slash will be co-producing the score of the movie.

“Anchor Bay is thrilled to be working with the Slasher Films team,” commented Kevin Kasha, Executive Vice President, Acquisitions and Co-Productions for Anchor Bay Films. “We knew we wanted to work with Slash when he announced the formation of the label back in September at Toronto and after having read this script, we are even more excited. Anchor Bay Films is the PERFECT home for Nothing to Fear.”

“The team that we’ve put together for Nothing to Fear is nothing short of excellent,” added Slash. “Anthony Leonardi’s vision of this story is exceptionally unnerving and dark. It will keep you totally engaged from the first second of the film to the last. It’s guaranteed to scare the hell out of you.”

“Slash is one of the biggest music icons in the world,” remarked Josh Thomashow, Director of Acquisitions for Anchor Bay Films. “Anchor Bay is so proud to be a part of the brand that makes him an icon in the horror world as well.”

Nothing to Fear is about a family whose journey towards a better life in a small town is savagely derailed by a charismatic but emotionally conflicted man of the cloth.

Stemming from folklore surrounding the actual town of Stull, Kansas, generations of residents and outsiders alike have proclaimed Stull to be one of the seven known gateways to Hell, where once a year, the Devil will rise from the town’s modest graveyard to walk the Earth. For decades, television, music, movies, and more have cautiously addressed the town; its horror is so infamous, even Pope John Paul II refused to fly over its grounds. Nothing to Fear finally pulls the folklore to the forefront and reveals the unsettling fact and fiction rumbling beneath the surface.

The deal was negotiated by Josh Thomashow on behalf of Anchor Bay and by Executive Producers Shaun Redick and Ray Mansfield of Movie Package Co., and Jackie Eckhouse of Sloss Eckhouse LawCo on behalf of Slasher Films. Content Media Corp. is currently handling international sales for the picture.

What do you think of Slash making movies? Are you interested in seeing Nothing to Fear?

Sundance 2012 Review: RED LIGHTS, from the Director of BURIED

$

0

Director Rodrigo Cortes lit Sundance 2010 on fire with Buried, and two years later, he's back with another thriller - one with a much more expanded scope. Red Lights follows veteran paranormal expert Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and her assistant Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) as they track strange cases around the country, proving them all to be hoaxes. The mysterious emergence of renowned psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) captivates Buckley, and the young physicist becomes obsessed with proving the legend to be a fraud. But Silver and Matheson share a past, and the doctor warns her eager assistant not to get involved. Guess how that turns out?

The acting is terrific from everyone involved, and this film showcases some of my favorite performances of Sundance 2012. Weaver is stoic and steadfast, Murphy is logical but compulsive, and De Niro actually commits to a character in a way I haven't seen from him in years. Sundance darling Elizabeth Olsen returns in a small role, and if you need more convincing after last year that she's the real deal, here you go. (The girl has had an astonishing four movies at the past two Sundance Film Festivals: Martha Marcy May Marlene and Silent House in '11; Red Lights and Liberal Arts in '12.) There are also some shades of Chris Nolan's The Prestige here as Murphy explores the theme of obsession onscreen, and Olsen plays the Scarlett Johansson role in this metaphor, warning him against the dangers of his infatuation.

While there are sequences in which not much physically happens on screen, like an extended McLaughlin Group-style television interview that lasts 5 or 10 minutes, Cortes is still able to make them visually compelling (as one might expect from someone whose last film contained nothing but one man in a coffin). Heavy use of close-ups is perfect for tension building, and though I haven't mentioned it until now, the movie is definitely a thriller. There are some horror-esque moments sprinkled throughout, but as Venkman said when we walked out of the theater, it reminded him of the early works of Roman Polanski. Weird stuff happens regularly, and there's an unsettling quality that seeps into the film even from its early moments, a creepy seance that is frightening to me (and, dare I say, the general public) because of our personal unfamiliarity with those sorts of acts. The score is superb, blending strings and brass in an effective way to heighten the mood at some points and punctuate scares at others. The dialogue is also fantastic, and seeing as how Cortes also wrote and edited this film, it's safe to say he's a filmmaking force to be reckoned with.

But...the ending. I loved the film up until the last two minutes, and then everything came crashing down. Cortes has seemed to carve out a niche for himself in which he angers people with the endings of his films, and this one left me even more confused than angry. It's not so much one of those "it's up to your interpretation" endings, either - I don't want to give too much away, but on a very basic story level, by the end of the movie I'm not exactly sure what happened. Everything is wrapped up very quickly and there's a dreamlike quality to the conclusion, adding to the confusion and disorientation as the story comes to a close. But ultimately, here I am talking about it, so Cortes has accomplished his mission.

Despite the questionable ending, this film is absolutely worth seeing and will almost certainly receive a wide release due to the cast alone. It's a tremendous movie up until the final minutes, and I'll need a few hours to fully digest it, but there's a good chance this will end up on my Favorites of the Festival list.

Sundance 2012 Review: WRONG - Hilariously Insane!

$

Wrong was an insanely strange and hilarious film that I couldn't help but love. This is simply one of those movies you have to see to understand how awesomely crazy it is. To be able to enjoy a film like this you have to surrender yourself to the world created by the storyteller for the audience; just leave common sense at the door for this one. The majority of the film made absolutely no sense whatsoever, but that's why I liked it so much!

The basic story for the film is simple and straightforward. It follows a guy named Dolph who wakes up and finds that his beloved dog Paul is missing, so he sets out on a journey to find his dog and bring him home. What makes this movie so interesting is the madness that surrounds this story, and the crazy ass universe that the audience is thrust into.

Just to give you an idea of the kind of insanity we are talking about, the time on the clocks in this world go from let's say 7:59 to 7:60. The main character is fired from his job, but even after three months he still shows up to work everyday. The best part about his office is that it's constantly raining inside the workplace, but everyone just does their job like nothing is happening. These are just examples! There's so much more that happens that is so far out in left field. One of the best moments is when a pet detective takes a piece of poop from the dog and downloads the memory of the dogs poop, and uploads it as a video... yeah I know, that's where this movie goes.

The film was written and directed by Quentin Dupieux, who previously directed the other incredibly fun and odd movie Rubber. I have no idea how big of a release this movie will get in theaters because it's just so far out in la la land, but I hope it gets a decent release! Not everyone is going to like this movie, but it's so damn trippy I don't see how most people wont enjoy the mental hysteria.

I had a hell of a great time watching Wrong. I was completely entertained by it, and I hope you get a chance to experience it.

Here's the synopsis:

Dolph Springer wakes up one morning to realize he has lost the love of his life, his dog, Paul. During his quest to get Paul (and his life) back, Dolph radically changes the lives of others: a pizza-delivering nymphomaniac, a jogging-addict neighbor in search of completeness, an opportunistic French Mexican gardener, and an off-kilter pet detective. In his journey to find Paul, Dolph may lose something even more vital—his mind.

Quentin Dupieux created a stir at the 2010 Cannes international Film Festival with Rubber, a film about a killer tire. He has crafted a follow-up that is equally bizarre, yet entrancing. WRONG overturns cinematic conventions and the universe within the film. Preconceived notions about life and storytelling are altered to a humorous, disorienting, yet ultimately illuminating effect. In doing so,WRONG makes us question those we blindly trust. With a hand in nearly every facet of filmmaking, Dupieux proves himself a mad, colossally talented visionary who delightfully refuses to play by the rules.

The first TV spot for Dr. Seuss' The Lorax has arrived online thanks to Universal Pictures via Comingsoon. Danny DeVito, Zac Efron, Ed Helms, Taylor Swift, Rob Riggle, and Betty White lend their voices to the big screen adaptation. I like the voicework and the explosion of colors. I do worry that the colors may be a bit too much but will wait to see on the big screen.

Here is the description:

The animated adventure follows the journey of a 12-year-old as he searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

The Lorax opens in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on March 2. Watch the first spot below and share your thoughts.

Bradley Cooper's The Words and Black Rock are two of the most recent sales at SundanceTHR reports that CBS Films has picked up The Words, after a heated bidding war. Director and screenwriter Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal walked away with about $2 million with a $1.5 million P&A commitment. The literary thriller centers on "a hot young author (Cooper) who plagiarizes from a forgotten manuscript." Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, and Ben Barnes also star in the film. A number of studios dropped out of contention after Klugman and Sternthal demanded a traditional theatrical release over a day-and-date VOD release. What helped seal the deal for CBS, was the "commitment in the awards season" and the back-end deal.

Deadline reports that LD Entertainment has paid around six figures for North American distribution rights to Black Rock, a thriller directed by Katie Aselton and written Mark Duplass. The film stars Kate Bosworth, Lake Bell, and Aselton. Black Rock is reportedly a mix of Deliverance and Thelma and Louise. It's story follows "three female fiiends set aside personal issues and organize a girl getaway weekend on a remote on the coast of Maine. One wrong move turns into a deadly fight for survival." A number of studios were interested in Black Rock, including Gold Circle, Lionsgate, Magnolia and IFC.
