Albert Brooks Coming Back for FINDING NEMO 2

Albert Brooks has officially signed on to reprise his role as Marlin in Pixar's Finding Nemo 2. The project was announced last year; Andrew Stanton will be back to direct and Ellen DeGeneres will be returning to voice the character Dori. This will be Stanton's first project since his John Carter box office disaster. The sequel is being scripted by Victoria Strouse, and it's expected to be released in theaters sometime in 2016.

It's great that that they got Brooks to come back! I loved Finding Nemo, and I'm curious to see what happened to the characters in the film, and what the story will be. What are some possible story lines that you'd like to see?

Joss Whedon has officially wrapped production on Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series pilot! Writer and executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen posted the photo above on Instagram featuring herself, Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Jeph Loeb, and Jeffrey Bell.

The series will now head into the post production phase, and prep up for a fall premiere date if it gets picked up as a series, and I'll be shocked if that doesn't happen.

The cast includes Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na We as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Gemma Simmons, and Chloe Bennet as Skye. The series takes place after the events of The Avengers, and will revolve around the activities of the top-secret S.H.I.E.L.D. espionage organization featured throughout the Marvel films.

We've got our first look at the new Japanese anime series Ghost in the Shell: Arise. This is going to be a four part prequel to Ghost in the Shell which gives us the history of what led to Motoko Kusanagi becoming a crime fighting cyborg. Each part will be 50 minutes long, and will get a short limited theatrical release in June, and will be released in Japan on Blu-ray snd DVD on July 26th.

The new series was directed by Kise Kazuchika who's worked on other projects such as Blood: The Last Vampire, Dennou Coil, and Neon Genesis Evangelion franchises, as well as previous Ghost In The Shell projects that have been made. Mardock Scramble creator Ubukata Tow wrote the screenplay.

This looks like it's going to be pretty awesome, and is that an Akira motorcycle she's riding around? Check out the the promo trailer!

Here's a translation of what all that means in the trailer...

"I heard you had to gain 25 pounds for the movie, how'd you do that? Eat Anne Hathaway?"

Here's the second part of Zach Galifianakis' hilarious Between Two Ferns Oscar Buzz Edition. This time around he interviews Oscar nominees Bradley Cooper, Jessica Chastain, Sally Field, and a special guest from the film Lincoln. I love the exchange between Cooper and Galifianakis. Cooper gets violent, and ends up smashing a pot across Galifianakis' head. You can watch Part 1 of the Oscar Buzz Edition by clicking here. Enjoy the good conversation!

THE VATICAN TAPES Will Be Directed By Mark Neveldine

Mark Neveldine, co-director of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, is looking to direct his fist solo film project with The Vatican Tapes. I assume this is the same film that was set up at Lionsgate back in 2009, only this one is set up at Lakeshore Entertainment.

If it is the same project the film tells the story of a tape that leaked from the Vatican, and it displays an exorcism that goes horribly wrong. It was supposed to be a found footage type movie, and the script was written by Chris Borrelli based on a story by Borrelli and Chris Morgan.

There's no confirmation if this is still what the movie will end up being, but with Neveldine on board to direct it's sure to have a lot of energy and adrenaline moving the story forward.

New Photo of Tom Cruise in OBLIVION - New Trailer Tomorrow

Joseph Kosinski's upcoming sci-fi film Oblivion looks pretty awesome, and in anticipation of the new trailer being released tomorrow here's a new image of Tom Cruise taking aim at something. The movie is based on an original idea from Kosinski that he turned into a graphic novel, and here's the synopsis...

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

The movie opens in IMAX theaters on April 12th, and conventional theaters on April 19th. It also stars Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo

New OLIVER TWIST Movie With a SHERLOCK HOLMES Vibe

Sony Pictures is developing a new film inspired by Charles Dickens’ classic novel Oliver Twist. The movie will be called Dodge & Twist, and it will have the same kind of feel and vibe as Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. The movie will feature the characters from the book, but it will be more of an action-adventure film.

The story follows pickpocketing rivals Oliver Twist and Artful Dodger and the new film "re-imagines them 20 years down the road. The two are on opposite sides of the law and get embroiled in an affair to steal the Crown Jewels."

This sounds like it could be a really cool movie. I've always loved the book, and the characters, and I think it will be really cool to see a film based on what happened to them 20 years down the road. The concept for the film came from producer Ahmet Zappa, and the script is being written by Cole Haddon who recently created an upcoming NBC series called Dracula

The film is on the fast track to production, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the movie turns out! Red Bull is also producing an Oliver movie that will include the physical art of parkour to carry out a series of art thefts.

Cool New MAN OF STEEL Promo Photo

Here's a really cool promo photo from Man of Steel featuring Henry Cavill looking like a badass. This image of Superman was thought to be fan-made at first, but has since been confirmed as being a real leaked promotional shot. The image came from deviantArt user djpyro229, but has since been taken down. I've also included a little behind the scenes shot of Cavill and Michael Shannon taking a little break during production. As you can see in the background it looks like 7-Eleven was demolished.

The movie also stars Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy, Harry Lennixas as General Swanwick, and Aylet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van.

The story follows "a young boy [who] learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind."

Man of Steel hits theaters June 14th, 2013!

Here's the trailer for a great looking coming-of-age film called Writers, which was directed by Josh Boone, and stars Greg Kinnear, Lily Collins, Kristen Bell, Jennifer Collins, and Logan Lerman.

The movie follows the stories of an acclaimed writer, his ex-wife, and their teenaged children as they "come to terms with the complexities of love in all its forms over the course of one tumultuous year."

I actually have a soft spot for movies like this, and this one looks like it's going to be really good. The movie's cast also includes Patrick Schwarzenegger and Stephen King. Writers gets a limited release on April 19th.

DreamWorks Animation and Netflix have announced today that they will be bringing us an animated series based on their upcoming CG animated film Turbo. The series will be called Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team), and it will be released on Netflix this coming December.

The movie is "a high velocity 3D comedy about an ordinary snail who dares to dream big – and fast. After a freak accident miraculously gives him the power of super-speed, Turbo kicks his dreaming into overdrive and embarks on an extraordinary journey to achieve the seemingly impossible: competing in the Indianapolis 500."

It stars Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Lion, and Samuel L. Jackson. It comes to theaters on July 19, 2013 .

The TV series, Turbo: F.A.S.T. is described as an "episodic animated television series that picks up where the feature film leaves off. It showcases the world-traveling exploits of our snail hero and his tricked-out racing crew as they master outrageous new stunts and challenge any villain unlucky enough to cross their path."

I have no idea if this is a good or bad idea because I have no idea if Turbo is going to be a good movie or not. It looks like it will be fun. Regardless of how it turns out the kids are going to love both the movie and the series. This will be the first series that Netflix will be exclusively releasing for kids.

Here's some more information from the Press Release:

Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (DWA) today announced they will create the first ever Netflix Original Series for kids. Based on the highly-anticipated DreamWorks Animation movie Turbo, premiering in theaters this summer, the Netflix series Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team) debuts exclusively this December in the United States and across the globe in the 40 countries where Netflix offers its service.

"Families love Netflix, so creating an original series for kids was a natural for us. And we're doing it in a big way by adapting Turbo, this year's DreamWorks Animation summer tentpole movie," said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix. "DreamWorks Animation has a long track record of creating incredibly successful characters and stories that delight people of all ages. We're thrilled to add Turbo the series as well as all new DreamWorks Animation films, starting with their 2013 slate, to Netflix."

"Netflix boasts one of the largest and fastest-growing audiences in kids television. They pioneered a new model for TV dramas with House of Cards, and now together, we're doing the same thing with kids' programming," said DreamWorks Animation's Chief Executive Officer, Jeffrey Katzenberg . "DreamWorks is thrilled to be part of the television revolution."

In addition to the original TV series Turbo: F.A.S.T., new DreamWorks Animation feature titles will be made available for Netflix members in the U.S. to watch beginning with the studio's 2013 film line-up.

In 2012, Netflix members streamed more than 2 billion hours of kids content. Check out this hilarious mashup that gives us a look at what The Sopranos would look like if it were a '90s sitcom like Full House. HBO's The Sopranos was one awesome TV show. Much like LOSTThe Sopranos was a must-watch weekly experience while it was on the air. In addition, both shows had controversial endings. I wonder what they would have had to do to give Full House a controversial ending... maybe Danny Tanner never had kids, that would be a freaky ending!

Disney has released a couple of new TV spots for Oz The Great and Powerful, and each one includes a few little bits of new footage. The first spot is called "OZ Will Amaze" and the second spot is called "Creatures." The Sam Raimi directed film opens up in 3D, 2D, and IMAX 3D theaters on March 8th, 2012!

Disney’s fantastical adventure Oz: The Great And Powerful, directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora, Evanora and Glinda, who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well. When small-time magician Oscar Diggs pulls one flimflam too many, he finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz where he must somehow transform himself into the great and powerful Wizard—and just maybe into a better man as well.

Cool Trailer for THE NUMBERS STATION with John Cusack

"You keep the station safe, you keep the code safe. Whatever it takes."

Here's the first trailer for a cool looking thriller called The Numbers Station, which stars John Cusack and Malin Akerman. The story for the film follows a former black ops agent and the young woman he's assigned to protect and together they fight for survival after a surprise attack. Cusack usually picks really good projects that I enjoy, so I trust this one will be worth checking out. Here's the synopsis!

After his latest mission goes disastrously wrong, veteran CIA black ops agent Emerson Kent is given one last chance to prove he still has what it takes to do his job. His new assignment: guarding Katherine, a code operator at a top-secret remote CIA "Numbers Station" where encrypted messages are sent and received. When an elite team of heavily armed assailants lays siege to the station, Emerson and Katherine suddenly find themselves in a life-or-death struggle against an unknown enemy. With the station compromised and innocent lives at stake, they must stop the deadly plot before it's too late.

The movie was directed by Kasper Barfoed, and will be released in theaters on April 26th, 2013. Check out the trailer!

BOBA FETT - To Prequel or Not To Prequel

$

We all know Lucasfilm plans on making a Boba Fett stand alone film. What isn't known at the moment is whether it will take place before or after the events in Return of The Jedi. GeektTyrant editors Eli Reyes and Mick Joest consider the possibilities of making the Boba Fett film a sequel or a prequel to the original Star Wars trilogy in this side by side scroll. Eli makes a case for setting the film before the original trilogy, and Mick makes a case for setting it after. Check out their pitches and let us know where you stand!

A long time ago in a galaxy far,
far away....

Prequel

The Jedi are all but extinct, and with vengeance no longer in his grasp, a young man struggles to walk his own path in the shadow of his father's death and in the looming presence of the Empire.

Under training from the notoriously war-skilled Mandalorians, he begins to make a name for himself by taking on increasingly dangerous bounties.

His work brings him infamy and vast income, but he must embark on a quest to uncover his father's past in order to come to terms with his own existence.

His father kept his friends close, but his clones even closer...

Sequel

Jabba’s palace has been destroyed. Night has fallen in the deserts of Tatooine and the Sarlacc that has devoured our protagonist is quiet. Suddenly there is a tremendous struggle. The tentacles of the beast flail and thrash violently and after much squealing and shrieking the beast falls silent. An armored hand claws from the edges of the beast out onto the desert sand. It’s Boba! He’s in rough shape but he’s alive. Once done struggling through the desert and perhaps battling a few sand people for food and shelter Boba makes his way into town. Now at the famous Mos Eisley Cantina Boba lacks in direction. His employer is dead and the bounty he hoped to claim for Han Solo with it...

It is a period  of....

Prequel

..discovery. One of the many problems with the Star Wars prequels (and most prequel films for that matter) is that there were very few surprises and way too many winks at the audience and neatly wrapped coincidences that simply didn't need to be there. So how do you successfully tell the backstory of a character whose appeal has in large part been attributed to the mystery surrounding him? Deepen the mythology! Boba isn't just uncovering his father's past, he's developing his skills and finding his own place in the galaxy. The story should open doors and lead down new avenues which further expand the Star Wars universe.

Sequel

...action. From here Boba could go back to his bountying ways and I’m sure that would be all sorts of action packed, but mission by mission objectives might not progress a story the length of a film.

The expanded universe puts Boba as part of the invading army against the Mandalorians in the Yuuzhan Vong War, only to switch sides and eventually lead the Mandalorians in battles alongside the New Republic.

Why It Would Be Awesome

Prequel

A Boba Fett stand alone film could basically be Batman Begins/Iron Man in space. He is the closest character the Star Wars universe has to Iron Man and Batman. Jon Favreau and Christopher Nolan both did a fantastic job of telling their character's origins while making them interesting enough where you weren't just counting down the minutes until they put on the suit.

The Mandalorian armored bounty hunter is very similar on paper to both the Armored Avenger and the Caped Crusader. If you thought those two had daddy issues, Boba isn't just living in the shadow of his father like Tony and Bruce, in a way, he literally IS his father. Also, Boba may be a good guy at heart, but he is a ruthless mercenary who runs around with "scum." Imagine what it'd be like if Bruce Wayne hadn't betrayed the League of Shadows, but instead carried on their traditions and eventually became their leader. The Boba Fett movie has the potential to be the darkest, most action-packed Star Wars film yet.

Seeing Boba assemble his iconic armor and seeing the missions that earned him the trophies that garner his suit would obviously be amazing to see. But I'm also interested in seeing how smart he is. Boba Fett has to be a much better detective than Batman because he's not just chasing costumed villains around Gotham, he's tracking down bounties around an entire galaxy. He could also be as tech savvy as Tony Stark. Darth Vader didn't warn everybody to not use disintegration, just Boba. What other technological weapons has he invented while becoming the most feared bounty hunter in the universe?

Sequel

In keeping Boba alive you give a proper rebirth to one of the most celebrated characters in the Star Wars universe. Reviving Boba also makes him fair game for ample appearances in the upcoming trilogy.

His bounty hunter lifestyle leaves him open to free agency to either rejoin the failing Empire or the New Republic. Make him part of the Empire and you give added strength to a side of the battle that at present is in desperate need of new recruits. As a foe we might finally see the true power of Boba shown so accurately in the novels and Robot Chicken.

Make him a good guy though? You have the potential for dream team alliances. Who wouldn’t love to see Fett appear in battle alongside Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, or Chewbacca?

The books even set Fett up to mentor (in a very Yoda like way) Han’s daughter which would be incredibly interesting and absolutely fantastic fan service.

Other pluses to continuing future Boba Fett? Being abandoned on Tatooine allows Fett to revist locales that there won’t be time for in the new trilogy.

It could also serve as a bridge between the prequels and canon by combining the new and the old features of the universe (pod racing in Mos Eisley perhaps?).

Basically it can introduce the viewer to the world they can expect to see in the upcoming films in the way a young Han Solo film can’t.

But only if…

Prequel

…it does NOT lead us up to events in the original Star Wars trilogy. What left fans reeling at the end of Batman Begins and Dark Knight was the promise of more adventures--how disappointed were you to find out Bruce became a hermit after his battle with Two Face? If successful, a sequel should be able to pick up right where this leaves off, with more bounties and more adventure.

It also shouldn't tread too much, if at all, on him as a child. Other than maybe a few flashback sequences reminding the audience how his father died. I think we've seen enough of him as a child in Attack of The Clones and The Clone Wars animated series.

Sequel

Producers use the spin off to introduce us to future Boba. You can’t waste time in the new trilogy explaining how a minor side character escaped apparent death in a previous film. It would confuse too many non geeks who didn’t know the origins and invariably piss people off. It’s a bold move, but hopefully a direction filmmakers would be willing to take.

I also don’t think anyone is in favor of this film is looking for a hack and slash “Boba Fest”. A whole movie focused on bounty hunting may be action packed, but without a purpose it would soon grow old and drag. If we are going to continue Boba Fett’s story, let’s continue Boba Fett's story.
