Chris Pine and Warwick Davis Talk STAR WARS: Episode VII

When Disney announced that J.J. Abrams would bring us Star Wars: Episode VII, the biggest worry fans had was the possibility that he wouldn't return to the Star Trek universe. Helming two of the biggest geek/sci-fi properties would be difficult. Even though Abrams is famous for being able to juggle television and film projects, he's also willing to let other people take over. After developing Lost, he quickly handed the reigns over to Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. When the chance to boldly go and reboot Star Trek came, he brought in Brad Bird to take over the Mission: Impossible franchise.

So with Star Trek Into Darkness hitting theaters this May, we're left wondering if Abrams will return to direct Star Trek 3. We're not the only ones worried. Captain Kirk himself, Chris Pine, has expressed similar concerns. In an interview with USA Today the actor admitted, "The only way I'll be disappointed is if he doesn't direct our third movie." Abrams is only committed to produce the next Star Trek flick, and with Disney aiming for a 2015 release for Star Wars Episode VII, it's very much up in the air whether or not he'll come back to direct.

"I think if that turns out to be the case we'll have to kidnap him and hold him hostage until he agrees to do a third," Pine added jokingly. Kidnapping threats aside, Pine admits that he's excited to have Abrams kicking off a new Star Wars trilogy, "From my standpoint, J.J. is a science-fiction genius. To have him over in the Star Wars camp is going to be a great thing. I'm sure it's going to be a great film."

So as to not anger either camp, Pine quickly shot down the mention of a possible Captain Kirk cameo in Star Wars, "Now you're really playing with fire. I wouldn't say that even lightly."

A welcome and potentially history-making cameo however would come from Warwick Davis. The Return of the Jedi star (who also had a cameo appearance in The Phantom Menace) spoke to WhatCulture about the possibility of coming back for another Star Wars trilogy.

I’ve not been approached, but I’d love to do it. I think JJ Abrams is a great filmmaker and a great choice. I’d like to play a villain, and handling a lightsaber would be a bonus. Plus, it would mean I could claim to be the only actor to appear in all three trilogies- the original trilogy, the prequels and the sequels, I think they’re called. So I’ll be dropping hints to Mr. Abrams, oh yes!

If Stan Lee can work his way into nearly every Marvel movie, certainly Warwick could be worked in somehow. How about the return of Warwick as the Ewok Wicket???

New ALL YOU NEED IS KILL Hi-Res Set Photos

Yesterday we posted set photos from All You Need is Kill. These are hi-res photos taken from diffrent angles. Tom Cruise is on a pretty good streak of solid action films, starting with MI:3. This futuristic war set, Groundhog Day-type film from director Doug Liman is going to be interesting. My hope is that they can make it different enough from Duncan Jones' somewhat similar movie Source Code.

Director: Doug Liman

Stars: Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt

Storyline: A soldier fighting in a war with aliens finds himself caught in a time loop of his last day in the battle, though he becomes better skilled along the way.

Henry Selick's SHADOW KING is Alive!

A few months ago we reported with a sad heart that director Henry Selick's stop-motion animated film Shadow King was killed off by Disney. He tried to take it to Laika, but they passed on it as well. Disney spent $50 million developing the project before they shut it down.

I'm now happy to report that it looks like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline director will be able to finish the project! Beasts of the Southern Wild producer Josh Penn is now attached to the project to help bring it back to life, and they will be taking it to the European Film Market in Berlin, where they will reveal some early footage that was already done.

Selick also wrote the script for the film which "centers on a nine-year-old New York orphan who hides his strange hands with long fingers from a cruel world. When's he's taught how to make amazing hand shadows that come to life, his hands become weapons in a shadow war against a monster bent on killing his brother and ultimately destroying New York."

How freakin' awesome does that sound?! I'm shocked that Disney didn't follow through with it. I'm excited that this project is going to happen, and I'm looking forward to seeing what it ends up looking like. Selick is a master of the art of stop-motion, and I'm sure it will end up being as great as it sounds.

Kristen Wiig Officially Joins ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND CONTINUES

A couple of months ago it was reported that Kristen Wiig might join the cast of Anchorman: The Legend Continues. I'm happy to say that she's now officially on board! Director Adam McKay recently tweeted the following confirmation...

This would only be the second time that Wiig and Will Ferrell have been in a film together. The only other movie they did together was 2008's Semi-Pro, and she only had a small role. Her role will be a little bigger this time around as she'll be playing Steve Carell's love interest in the story. I think Wiig is hilarious, and I'm happy that she ended up joining the film!

The story follows the on-set adventures of San Diego’s top newsman, and it was previously revealed that it will partly be a musical, so that's something to look forward to! Check out the funny awesomeness of Wiig and Ferrell presenting at the Golden Globes below!

SKYRIM - Nightingale Armor Cosplay

Skyrim has been on my mind again, recently. I own a PS3 and the DLC is out sometime this month, so I have been thinking about going back into that beautiful world for awhile. Of course, I am also nervous that it will suck me back in again, and I will get nothing done in my real life. These are the problems that I face on a day-to-day basis.

This Skyrim cosplay comes in the form of the Nightingale Armor that you receive from the Thieves Guild. When I played through the game the first time, this was the armor I wore for most of my playthrough because of all the skill bumps it gave you. Plus, the outfit is balla.

New Photos from Park Chan-wook‘s Thriller STOKER

I had a chance to see Park Chan-wook's psychological thriller, Stoker, at Sundance this year, and it was my favorite film at the festival. I absolutely loved it, and I think you will, too. It had incredible visual storytelling, as I said in my review, "The film was beautifully jacked up. I've always loved Park's direction, but I think this is could be his best film production to date." You can read my full review of the film here, and click here to watch our video review. Here's the synopsis...

India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) was not prepared to lose her father and best friend Richard (Dermot Mulroney) in a tragic auto accident. The solitude of her woodsy family estate, the peace of her tranquil town, and the unspoken somberness of her home life are suddenly upended by not only this mysterious accident, but by the sudden arrival of her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), whom she never knew existed. When Charlie moves in with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evie (Nicole Kidman), India thinks the void left by her father’s death is finally being filled by his closet bloodline. Soon after his arrival, India comes to suspect that this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives. Yet instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless young woman becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Stoker opens up next month on March 1st. Check out the photos!

Christopher McQuarrie Confirmed for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5

Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie has confirmed via his Twitter account that he will be directing Mission: Impossible 5! I thought he did a fantastic job with Jack Reacher, and I think he'll do great with the Mission: Impossible franchise. Here's the tweet that he sent out in response to the question as to if he was going to direct the movie or not...

The news first hit a couple months ago that Both Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams wanted McQuarrie to take on the fifth film. This is the first time we've heard confirmation from McQuarrie himself though. What do you think of McQuarrie directing the new Mission: Impossible film?

Could A Yoda Movie Be Successful?

$

It's hard to think about Star Wars without referencing one of its most beloved characters. Who hasn't wondered about the history of Yoda outside of Dagobah or the Jedi Council? I would love to see the time period in which Count Dooku served as his Padawan, or even some great exploit that told us how he came to be ranked among the top Jedis.

So why is it hard to imagine this film going well?

Personally I don't think I could handle 5 straight minutes of oddly structured sentences, let alone an entire film. I'm also not a fan of the lead role in a live action film being completely CGI. Giving too much screen time to a quirky character can dampen the likeability, and perhaps create an annoyance for a majority of film audiences (see Jar Jar Binks). Who would sell a movie like this? Who would watch such a thing? Who could possibly market a movie with all these attributes to an audience who would gladly indulge it and ask for more?!

Oh yeah...Disney.

It's times like these, when I find myself holding a torch and pitchfork amongst the doubtful geeks, that I remember they wouldn't be one of the world's largest organizations if they didn't know what they're doing. Out of all the characters in the Star Wars universe, Yoda seems most apt to be rubbing shoulders with the typical archetype that Disney looks for in it's characters. Sure, it might not turn out to be exactly what you had in mind, but when does anything Disney? They're in their element, rest assured.

There is  the fact that after a long discussion, not one of our editors could come up with a successful spin off movie (Chronicles of Riddick and Jay And Silent Bob were possibly the closest choices), and you don't even want to be reminded of some of the unsuccessful...

Electra, Catwoman, Puss In Boots, Wolverine Origins, The Scorpion King... the list goes on and on. Most supporting characters don't adapt well to the lead role, and this in and of itself is a concerning issue.

So can the mentioned Yoda movie be successful? Of course it can, it wouldn't be very sporting to damn a movie right out of the gate, but history of film spin offs says no. Conversely the character Yoda itself seems a good fit for a Disney script and if anyone would have the money and talent to pull it off, it's them.

Chris Pratt Lands Lead Role in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY!

Marvel has finally cast the lead role of Star-Lord in the James Gunn-directed film Guardians of the Galaxy! According to Deadline Chris Pratt has landed the role, which is actually perfect casting! Pratt stars in NBC's Parks and Recreation, and has had roles in films such as Moneyball and Zero Dark Thirty.

There were a ton of names that have been considered for the role over the last few months, but Pratt's name never came up until now. Pratt is such a cool choice for this role! I'm happy he landed it, and I'm looking forward to seeing him take it on!

Guardians of the Galaxy follows a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants. Star-Lord is the pilot and leader of the space superhero team in the film. He's also the offspring of a human mother and an alien father.

What do you think of Pratt being cast as Star-Lord?

The skate video Firefly combines a glowing skateboard with aerial photography for something truly unique and awesome. It starts out a bit dark then really opens up with some cool aerial shots. There are a few shots that I think are really well done of an empty freeway and city which either have CG enhancement or just some really late night video shoots. Thanks to Obvious Winner for sharing.

Be sure to checkout the making of, it shows off the RC JAMCOPTERS Helicopters used to get those crazy shots.

Director Joe Johnston on J.J. Abrams Directing STAR WARS

I'm one of several Star Wars fans that would love to see Captain America director Joe Johnston direct a new Star Wars movie. Hopefully, one day it will happen. Working on the original Star Wars movies was one of Johnston's first gigs, in fact. In case you didn't already know, he's the guy who created Boba Fett. In a recent interview with Huffington Post, Johnston shared his thoughts on J.J. Abrams landing the directing job for Star Wars: Episode VII, and here's what he had to say:

J.J. Abrams is the perfect choice to get the third trilogy off the ground. These films are big logistical nightmares to direct, like any $150 million plus project. They're like military operations in the attention to detail required while trying to retain a grasp of the big picture. J.J. has more than proven he can handle the pressure, plus it doesn't hurt to have a guy at the wheel who has produced, written, and created shows of his own. If anything he may be overqualified.

I have no doubt that Abrams is going to give us Star Wars fans everything we've been waiting for. I can't wait to see what he ends up doing! In the interview Johnston also candidly talks about Irvin Kershner director of Empire Strikes Back, and Richard Marquand director of Return of the Jedi. Here's a little excerpt from the article:

I think George was occasionally frustrated with the coverage Kershner shot. He refused to shoot a master, a cardinal sin in George's book. (A master shot is "a single shot that includes the complete scene from its start to the finish.")

For Jedi, [Lucas] may have wanted to make sure he had a director who was a little more amenable to George's requests, but this is all conjecture on my part. We saw a lot more of Marquand in pre- and post-production than we saw of Kershner -- I got the sense he was very much interested in the process itself, the creation of the visual effects. George's attitude has always been that the film is made in the cutting room and production is a process of assembling the raw material. My guess is that George saw Marquand as a guy who could go out and amass the great-looking footage that George would mold into the film in post.

It's definitely an interesting read, and you should check it out

Every Insane Moment from AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM in 60 Seconds

American Horror Story: Asylum has been amazingly twisted on so many levels. I've enjoyed this series, and now you can relive every insane twisted moment from the show in 60 seconds, thanks to this video from Antisocial Commentary (/Film), which also explores the themes of the series in a very entertaining manner. I can't wait to see what season 3 is going to bring us!

Defying the scales of good or bad in any tradional or moral sense, American Horror Story is a series that effortlessly coasts by on the strength of its sheer off-the-wall what-the-fuckery, generating suspense not through atmosphere or pacing or carefully calibrated moments of terror, but by defiantly challenging any preconceived notion about what the limits of storytelling should be.

As such, any level-headed attempt to critique it is probably missing the point, whatever the hell that point may be.

So instead, here’s a rapid-fire encapsulation of every deliriously wrong-headed plot development and trashy horror indulgence that the second season of this batshit crazy show had to offer...

Sean Bean Joins JUPITER ASCENDING as Han Solo Type Character

Lord of the Rings star Sean Bean has joined the cast of The Wachowskis' new sci-fi film Jupiter Ascending! He joins Eddie Redmayne, Channing Tatum, and Mila Kunis in epic sounding project. Bean will play a character named Stinger, who is described as a Han Solo-type character, which is a part I can totally see him playing.

The story takes place in a time where humans are at the bottom of the evolutionary ladder and follows a woman who has been targeted for assassination by the queen of the universe. It kind of sounds like a much bigger sci-fi retelling of Snow White, and Bean is a great actor that I'm sure will be awesome in it. Hopefully he doesn't die in this movie!

I love watching The Wachowskis' films, and this sounds like it will be a really cool movie. I just watched Speed Racer again recently, and was once again blown away by it's awesomeness. That movie was just ahead of its time. I know a lot of people didn't like that movie but it was just so blasted fun! I'm very excited to see what they have cooking for Jupiter Ascending

Here's a more detailed rundown of what the movie is about:

Imagine a universe in which “human beings are just the Cro-Magnons, or even the Australopithecines, of what beings can ultimately go on to become in the galaxy. It’s a return to form for [the Wachowskis], because these higher forms of life are watching us from other, albeit this time non-meta worlds, but actual, other worlds, as in planets and moons.

[It's] supposed to be the first entry in a trilogy, centers on an unlikely (and as with The Matrix, ultimately reluctant) heroine: A recent Russian immigrant — played by actual Ukrainian immigrant Mila Kunis — who is busily scrubbing toilets for a living. Unbeknownst to her, she actually possesses the same perfect genetic makeup as the Queen of the Universe and is therefore a threat to her otherwise immortal rule.

These evolved beings fall into various different groups, all of which share some human DNA but who have become evolved after being bred with animal DNA to heighten their best characteristics — e.g., soldiers getting their fearlessness, strength, and a pack mentality from wolves; workers getting their industriousness and reputation for diligence from bees.

Pretty soon, a bounty hunter of the evolved-being type is dispatched to dispose of the Cleaning Lady with the Great Pair of Nucloetides, but, as you’d expect with a Matrix re-dux, they fall in love.  And for having fallen for his target, the bounty hunter — who we hear will be played by Channing Tatum — well, let’s just say that things get messy after that, because his employers take a-less-than-enlightened-being reaction to his decision to protect rather than kill her.

Has there ever been a prop or costume/wardrobe from a movie you thought was so cool you had to own it, make it, or steal it? If your answer was along the lines of "Hell Yes!" then prepare to be inspired. Adam Savage of Mythbusters has amazing skills that he uses to create or collect movie replica props and wardrobe. Among his personal stories is an amazing one of how fans that wanted a replica Indiana Jones hat ended up creating hats for the 4th Indy movie. They now make them for a living, selling them as officially licensed hats, and yes, Adam is wearing one in the photo above. Best of all he even gives some clues on how you might get started on creating your very own movie replicas.

STAR WARS Stand Alone Films Confirmed

When Disney and Lucasfilm announced that they were planning on releasing two to three Star Wars movies a year I just assumed we were going to see more stand alone character movies based in that epic universe. In fact I remember them talking about it early on. Then last night a rumor hit that the first stand alone Star Wars film to get made would focus on Yoda. For those of you who are looking for any more confirmation that stand alone Star Wars film are going to happen, here it is.

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed all the talk and speculation in an interview on CNBC. He reveals that Larry Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes, X-Men: The Last Stand) are working on the films, which is awesome, but there's no confirmation yet on which characters are involved.

Stacy Keach Cast in SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR

Stacy Keach (American History X) has signed to play a chief villain in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. According to the report, Keach will play a mob boss named Wallenquist, described by Miller as "the one man who can't be redeemed in Sin City. He is pure evil." Keach is perfect for the role.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is based on the comic created by Miller, from a screenplay written by Academy Award winner William Monahan (The Departed). Bruce Wills, Rosario Dawson, Josh Brolin, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Joseph Gordon LevittJamie KingJamie Chung, and Dennis Haysbert.

The plot for Sin City 2 comes from the stories A Dame To Kill For, Just Another Saturday Night, and a new one Miller wrote called The Long, Bad Night, which apparently centers on Alba's character, Nancy Callahan, who will be the connection between the two films.

DEADPOOL: New Concept Art & Screens Give Plenty of Hope to Action Fans

High Moon Studios is really going all out for their upcoming Deadpool game, at least it seems that way. The new screenshots they've released promise lots of unfiltered slicing and dicing along with a smattering of uzis and huge gatling guns (see image below for a glimpse of that in action). For a character like DP, though, it makes sense, and I'm glad they aren't holding back and trying to keep the game PG. Plus, I'm a huge Cable fan (yeah, I'm the guy evidently that's been loving that character all these years), so any game with the two of them is already in my good graces. If they can nail the humor, I think they've got a hit on their hands, but we won't know until it releases later this year. In the meantime enjoy the photos and let us know what you think!
