Thomas Jane, James Marsden, and Billy Bob Thornton Join RED MACHINE

We finally have an update on Red Machine, from Saw V's David Hackl. Variety (via Bloody Disgusting) is reporting that the long-gestating project written by Jack Rehr looks to be a go. James Marsden, Thomas Jane, and Billy Bob Thornton have all joined the cast.

The project "centers around two estranged brothers (Marsden, Jane) who reconcile on a camping trip with their girlfriends. Once in the remote wilderness, however, things go horribly awry when they are attacked and relentlessly stalked by a horrifying grizzly bear -- the Red Machine. Thornton will play a legendary bear expert and hunter."
The Grey features Liam Neeson taking on some vicious wolves, but there are not enough bear attack movies out there. I am not a fan of the Saw franchise, but I think this is a solid cast. What are your thoughts?

Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough Join Tom Cruise For Kosinski's Sci-Fi Film

Universal has found its leading ladies to star opposite Tom Cruise in an untitled sci-fi film from Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy). Variety reports that Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough will be in the movie. They beat out just about every high-profile young actress for the roles. Jessica Chastain was attached to star but had to drop out to join Kathryn Bigelow's untitled Osama Bin Laden film.

The first drafts of the scripts were penned by William Monahan and Karl Gajdusek. Michael Arndt is hard at work writing the latest revision. The futuristic tale follows "a soldier stationed on Earth, the surface of which has been destroyed by aliens. When he discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off a chain of events that cause him to question everything he knows." Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark are producing via Chernin Entertainment, along with Barry Levine of Radical Publishing and Kosinski. Jesse Berger and Dave Morrison are serving as executive producers, with production planned to begin in the first quarter of 2012.

Riseborough gained a lot of attention after starring in Madonna's W.E. This project marks her American film debut. Her most recent role is in James Marsh's Shadow Dancer, which debuts at Sundance next week. Kurylenko was a Bond girl in Quantum of Solace. She will soon be seen on Starz's upcoming series Magic City and just finished shooting Terrence Malick's untitled film starring Ben Affleck.

After seeing Cruise in Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, I am looking forward to seeing him in just about anything. Minority Report, also a sci-fi film, is one of my past faves. What are your thoughts on this news?

DJANGO UNCHAINED - Greg Nicotero Says Movie Is Classic Tarantino

Special effects artist Greg Nicotero has worked with Quentin Tarantino on films like Pulp FictionKill Bill Vol. 1 and 2, and Inglorious Basterds. He and Tarantino are now working on Django Unchained, which has an awesome cast and story. MTV spoke with Nicotero, who gave an update on what fans can expect from Tarantino's first western.

Here is what he had to say about what it was like reading Tarantino's script for Reservoir Dogs for the first time:

I'm reading the opening scene, they're in the diner talking about Madonna, I remember looking at the guys I was working with and going 'I've never read anything like this in my life.'

Reading Quentin Tarantino's scripts, they take you places no one else's scripts ever take you.. I've had the good fortune of working on all his movies, I was in Berlin on 'Inglourious Basterds' for four months, 'Pulp Fiction. I got to stab Uma Thurman in the chest with the hypodermic needle, I got to blow Marvin's head off, so we're in the trenches again.
Nicotero had this to say about Django Unchained:
I love the script for 'Django,' I think it's great. Jaimie Foxx and Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio, Kurt Russell, Kerry Washington, it's what I love about Quentin is that he is and will forever be an old school filmmaker.
He goes on to say,
There are not a lot of special effects. It's all about his actors and it's so cinematic for him. We don't shoot anything digital, he uses film, one camera, we don't have five cameras shooting. That's it. It's inspiring. It's inspiring to think about the fact that that's how movies were made for years and years and years, and I'm not saying that digital technology doesn't have its positives, but I love that Quentin is old school.
Watch the interview below and see for yourself:
Christmas is a long way off, but I am very excited to see this film.

Victorian Batman

I came across this piece of art that looked like a Victorian-era Batman. It's from a 1904 illustrated comic book called Spring Heeled Jack - The Terror of London. (Hat tip: Vintage Gal)

Who is Spring Heeled Jack?

The story of Spring Heeled Jack begins rather innocently as a simple rumor starting in the south western area of London, early 19th century.  Beginning in 1837, citizens began reporting sightings of a figure who could seem to leap across entire streets in one bound and over ten foot hedges with scary speed and precision.  Dressed in black and often taking on demonic features, Spring Heeled Jack’s eyes glowed like red lasers and was often seen breathing blue flames through his nostrils and mouth

So I started thinking there must be some cool Victorian Era Batman art out there. I've put together a collection of art with a couple bonus images.

Sigourney Weaver Claims PROMETHEUS Was Her Idea!

$

Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley character will not be in Ridley Scott's Prometheus, but that does not mean she did not have something to do with the film. According to The Independent (via Blastr), Weaver claims that Prometheus was her idea!

The Alien franchise played a major role in Weaver's career. Here is what she had to say about the franchise and the clashes that she had with 20th Century Fox:
Fox and I disagreed on how the franchise should continue. But I'm glad it's Ridley doing it, and I'll be as curious as anyone, or maybe more curious, to see it. I think he took my suggestion. Fox wanted to go to Earth, and I said: 'That's so boring. Who wants to see aliens on earth?' I said, 'Go back to the planet'.
The concept for the fifth film was to go back to the planet, but that movie never got made. Scott has been friends with Weaver for a number of years, so it is possible that the Prometheus' script was taken in part from Weaver's concept. It is also possible that Scott and Damon Lindelof came up with the concept on their own.
What are your thoughts on this news? Do you think Weaver had a hand in creating Prometheus' concept?

This seems too good to be true. I can play as both of my favorite Resident Evil franchise characters in the same game, and there's no catch?! Awesome. Not to mention the gameplay looks amazing.

It may be too early to tell, but I have a strong feeling this game is going to advance the series leaps and bounds in the same way it's predecessor (RE:4) did. Makes sense, as Hiroyuki Kobayashi is finally back in control on the franchise!

For those of you who are fans of Momoru Hosoda's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars, you'll be excited to know that he has a new feature length hitting Japanese theaters this Summer, according to Ain't It Cool.

Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki or The Wolf Children Rain And Snow is tsaid to be a modern day fairy-tale featuring the adventures of two children who can morph into wolves. That's about as far as my non-Japanese speaking knowledge goes, so maybe if one of our readers could translate to give more detail? That would be great.

Either way, the trailer looks cool.

Diane Kruger In Talks To Play The Seeker in Stephanie Meyer's THE HOST

Stephanie Meyer's The Host is the next big franchise for Twihards to glom onto. Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, and Jake Abel are all set to star in the Andrew Niccol-directed adaptation of the science fiction novel. Deadline reports that Diane Kruger is now in talks to play the role of The Seeker in the film.

The story is set during a time when "a parasitic alien species called The Souls has just about wiped out the human population." Seekers are "charged with overseeing the conversion of a young rebel soldier (Ronan) whose consciousness has been infiltrated by Wanderer, a soul that has taken control of bodies and minds but who is daunted by the young human’s spirit — and obsessed with the memories of her boyfriend and her brother — and sets out to track them down. The Seeker pursues her, knowing that the conversion of the rebel will lead to the discovery and eradication of the rebel movement."

The Inglorious Basterds star had been a candidate for a lead role in Universal’s Oblivion but withdrew from consideration and took The Host. The film is being set up as a trilogy. Open Road purchased U.S. distribution rights last year and filming is slated to begin shortly for a March 29, 2013 release.
I have not read the books, but I hear that this is a much better than The Twilight Saga. Is Kruger a good fit for the role of The Seeker? Do you think the other cast sounds good?

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga Join James Wan's THE CONJURING

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are taking the lead in a new supernatural thriller from James Wan. THR reports that the New Line production will reteam Wilson and Wan, who last worked together on Insidious.

Chad and Carey Hayes penned the script, which is based on the real life tale of the Perron family and their ordeals in the 1970s. Wilson and Farmiga will play "a husband and wife team of demonologists and psychic investigators who enter the most horrifying case of their career, spirits in a Rhode Island farmhouse." Production is planned to begin in North Carolina in March.

Wilson can be seen in theaters in Jason Reitman's Young Adult. Farmiga will be seen next month’s Denzel Washington-Ryan Reynolds action thriller Safe House. Wan's Insidious was very scary, so I am sure this will be equally thrilling. What are your thoughts on this cast?

Sundance 2012 Review: THIS MUST BE THE PLACE

$

Paolo Sorrentino's This Must Be The Place centers around Sean Penn's character, a burned out former rock star named Cheyenne, as he searches for his dead father's tormenter, a now 95-year-old Nazi hiding in the United States. The director scored with his last film, Il Divo - which I haven't seen, but have heard great things about - but his follow-up is a total disappointment on nearly every level.

Some of that synopsis may sound interesting, and there are occasionally interesting moments in the film that seem to hint at something deeper happening beneath the surface. But these moments ultimately don't lead anywhere, leaving me frustrated and wishing I could see these loose ends tied up instead of what actually unfolds on screen. Early in the film, a downcast Penn walks through a mall and an ironic fan comes up and snaps a photo of him without permission, celebrating as he walks away. Perhaps this movie will deal with the nature of celebrity. Nope. Aside from the occasional person recognizing Penn's character, that's about all it offers on the subject. There's also a very interesting subplot involving Penn producing the debut album of a band that was playing at said mall, but this is mentioned briefly and then never returned to. Where's THAT movie? That's the one I want to see.

Instead, Sean Penn takes on this bizarre affectation that reminds me of a grandmother: pasty white skin, bright lipstick, a weirdly high-pitched titter of a laugh, and long (and I mean LONG) pauses in between words. The film runs 118 minutes, but feels like an eternity; if he had spoken at a normal rate, it could have easily been over in 90 minutes. Non-sequiturs abound, and the transitions from location to location are awkwardly handled and never smoothly executed. The entire movie hinges on the audience investing in his character, but I found him utterly insufferable from beginning to end. Side characters played by Frances McDormand and Judd Hirsch are bright spots in an otherwise dull film, and This Must Be The Place certainly isn't a place I ever want to visit again.

Sundance 2012 Review: WEST OF MEMPHIS - New Evidence Revealed in WM3 Case

$
0
0

I've been following the story of the West Memphis Three for the last ten years. I was hooked when I first saw the HBO documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills. Since then I've been following everything surrounding the case of with Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley, and like many of the other people that know of this sad tale, I've been waiting for the day of their release... that day has come and gone. With the help of filmmaker Peter Jackson the investigation of these murders were able to continue, and these investigators brought information to light proving that these three men have been wrongly imprisoned for the last 18 years.

This Jackson produced documentary West of Memphis was directed by Amy Berg, and it takes the audience through a frustratingly long journey of how these boys were part of a modern day witch hunt after three 8-year-old boys were found murdered and mutilated in West Memphis. It takes us into the dark hole of lies and deceit that put these boys in prison, and follows how they slowly but surely crawled their way out of prison hell and into the light. This was all made possible due to all their supporters, and the fact that this was the first crowd-sourced investigation in history.

I've seen all three of the Paradise Lost films, and this new doc is just a great compilation and profile of what has already been shown in those documentaries over the years. At the same time it's unique in the fact that it gives us a look at how Echols and his wife Lori Davis came together, and how they got by and stayed positive throughout all this madness. It was really touching to see the strength these people had to endure what they had to endure. The doc included interviews with all key members involved with the investigations, trials, the parents of the murdered victims, and the famous people supporting them. It included actual footage from the trial, as well as some images from the crime scene which were very hard to watch.

More importantly, the doc includes crazy insane evidence that was uncovered during the investigation, that not only proves the innocence of the West Memphis Three, but also points the finger at the step-father of one of the murdered victims, Terry Hobbs, and the evidence they have compiled against him is pretty damning. It's anyone's guess what will happen from here, but this newly found evidence is already starting to cause a stir. No joke, this evidence was just brought into light less than a month ago, and they were able to work it into the final cut of the film in the last couple of days. As soon as we got out of the theater news was already blowing up online about it.

For those of you who don't know much or anything about this story, West of Memphis is a definitive documentary that tells you everything you need to know about this case. At the same time, I don't want to take the spotlight off the Paradise Lost docs because without those these three men would most likely still be in prison, they are what inspired the uprising of support.

The movie ends on a bitter sweet note. Yes, the West Memphis Three were freed, but they had to admit guilt to get their freedom. Now Arkansas politicians are treating this as a closed case, they "put the matter to rest." A killer is still walking free, and it seems like they aren't going to do anything about it because they got their guilty plea. Justice was not served, and at this point it doesn't look like it ever will be.

The Paradise Lost are available for watching now, but when West of Memphis eventually comes out it's a must watch.

Here's the fill press release detailing the newly found evidence:

(Mountain Home, Arkansas – January 20, 2012) Terry Hobbs’ nephew, Michael Hobbs Jr., allegedly told his friends “my uncle Terry murdered those three little boys,” according to declarations under penalty of perjury recently given to Damien Echols’ defense team. The three new witnesses were polygraphed about what they stated Michael Hobbs, Jr. told them.

“One day Michael picked us up in his truck. He was very quiet and upset. Michael then said to us, ‘you are not going to believe what my dad told me today. My Uncle Terry murdered the three little boys.’ According to Michael, his dad called this ‘The Hobbs Family Secret’ and he asked us to keep it a secret and not tell anyone.”

Another witness stated, “One night last winter, Michael and I were playing pool in his basement when the third friend asked about the West Memphis Three case which had been in the news. Michael responded by saying, ‘My uncle killed three kids in West Memphis.’ Michael was dead serious when he said this.”

The three little boys referenced in the declarations were found brutally murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993. DNA consistent with Terry Hobbs, stepfather of victim Stevie Branch, was later discovered in the knot of a shoelace used to restrain victim Michael Moore. Three eyewitnesses have also provided sworn statements that they saw Terry Hobbs with the three children on the day of the murders, immediately before they disappeared. Terry Hobbs has maintained that he never saw the three boys the day they were murdered.

A third witness stated that he was at Michael Hobbs Jr’s home in 2003 or 2004 when he was told by Hobbs Jr. that the two of them could not go down to the basement to play pool because Michael Hobbs Sr. was down there having a conversation with Hobbs Jr.’s uncle. The witness said that he “ listened with Michael Jr. at the top of the stairs. I heard two men talking. One appeared to be very upset even crying and he said ‘I am sorry, I regret it.’ The other man was trying to console him and said, ‘You are in the clear, no one thinks you are a suspect, those guys are already in prison.’”

Echols’ attorney, Stephen Braga of Ropes & Gray, said: “This is critical new information which reveals that the people closest to Terry Hobbs, his family members, may know much more about Terry’s involvement in the West Memphis Three case than they have ever acknowledged. If this is the Hobbs Family Secret, then what a horrific cost that secrecy has imposed on the lives of so many people – perhaps most significantly Pam Hobbs who deserves to know what really happened to Stevie on the night of the murders, as do the Byers and Moore families. With the secret now out, let’s hope that someone in the Hobbs family has the heart, the soul and the courage to come forward to tell the truth directly. In the meantime, I have given our investigative materials concerning these new witnesses – along with other related information – to District Attorney Scott Ellington for his review and action.”

The new witnesses came forward after seeing a recording of the CBS News 48 Hours special on the West Memphis 3 case. At the end of that broadcast, attorney Stephen Braga was asked what’s next in the effort to gain exoneration for the three after their plea deal. He responded: “Hopefully, some day we will find that smoking gun, that key piece of inculpatory DNA or a deathbed confession or a witness will come forward and say, “You know, this is really what happened.”

Hearing those words moved the new witnesses to contact the West Memphis 3 Confidential Tip Line just a few weeks ago. The new witnesses were then interviewed by the Echols’ defense team, signed declarations under penalty of perjury and passed polygraph examinations concerning what they say Michael Hobbs Jr. told them.

The Confidential Tip Line number is (501) 256-1775.

Here's the synopsis for the doc:

West of Memphis is an examination of a failure of justice in Arkansas. The documentary tells the hitherto unknown story behind an extraordinary and desperate fight to bring the truth to light. Told and made by those who lived it, the filmmakers' unprecedented access to the inner workings of the defense, allows the film to show the investigation, research and appeals process in a way that has never been seen before; revealing shocking and disturbing new information about a case that still haunts the American South.

Sundance 2012 Review: HELLO I MUST BE GOING

$
0
0

Hello I Must Be Going begins like every student film you've ever seen: a woman slowly wakes up and brushes her teeth. But the film hurdles this obstacle quickly and becomes a charming tale of personal growth, discovery, and, of course, love.

While going through a divorce, Amy (Melanie Lynskey) moves back in with her parents (Blythe Danner and John Rubinstein) and sinks into a depression, slumming around the house in the same ratty shirt day after day. When her dad hosts a party at the house to impress a new client, the client's 19-year-old son Jeremy (Christopher Abbott) makes an impression on Amy. They're both treated like children at dinner, with their families carrying on conversations about them as if they weren't even there, and the two share a moment after dinner. What starts as a quick fling evolves into a relationship that will change them forever, allowing them both to grow up even though there's a large age gap between them.

It's not the most original concept, especially for a film festival seemingly built for these types of movies, but it's got a lot of heart and the acting is excellent. Lynskey balances palpable realism and conservative comedy in her performance and she's a joy to watch, never straying into melodramatic or over the top territory. Danner adds to her impressive resume with some more solid work, and though I found Abbott to be the weak link, he was still agreeable in the role of the young suitor. The script is compelling and brisk enough, with no noticable lag time and some fascinating relationships at play between familes.

Ultimately, Hello I Must Be Going succeeds or fails on the virtues of Lynskey's performance, and I was totally invested from the start. (OK, maybe right after the teeth brushing scene.) I'm very interested to see what she's got coming up next, but in the meantime, check this one out if you get a chance. It's a small little love story with a good twist on the standard coming-of-age tales you see every year. Until next time...
