Jim Carrey to Star in Jared Hess Directed Heist Film LOOMIS FARGO

$

I'm looking forward to seeing Jim Carrey in Kick-Ass 2 and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. I hope it's the start of more good films to come from him in the future. He's currently in discussions to star in an interesting sounding heist movie called Loomis Fargo.

The movie is set to be directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), and will tell the true story of four Southerners who stole $17 million from an armed Loomis Fargo truck in 1997. It's based on the book, Heist!: The $17 Million Loomis Fargo Theft, by Jeff Diamant.

This sounds like it could be a really good movie. It's also a very different kind of film project for both Hess and Carrey, hopefully they are able to turn it into a great film. It definitely has potential. Here's a breakdown of the story from the book:

The audacity of the act was breathtaking.

On October 5, 1997, FBI agents gathered at the Loomis, Fargo & Co. warehouse in Charlotte, North Carolina, to watch a security videotape of a man loading stacks of cash into a pushcart and wheeling them from the vault. The cart held about $2 million, and the thief made multiple trips.

They already knew who he was-David Ghantt, a Loomis Fargo employee. And the company soon calculated how much was missing--$17 million. But the FBI had scant clues as to where Ghantt had fled and who might have helped him.

As the people of the Carolinas would soon learn, discretion was not the hallmark of the heist's perpetrators.

Word trickled in to the FBI that Ghantt had a romantic interest in a former coworker, Kelly Campbell, who one day visited a Toyota dealership to purchase a minivan with twenty-dollar bills. Accompanying her was Steve Chambers, who, though unemployed, had recently moved from his mobile home into a $635,000 mansion. A wiretap of Steve's phone later unearthed a plot to murder David Ghantt, who was hiding in Mexico.

When the FBI arrested those involved in the heist and its aftermath, the public frenzy began. People were enthralled by the reckless extravagance, poor judgment, and peculiar taste of the perpetrators-through stories of a $43,000 diamond ring, breast implants, a faux tiger-skin stair runner, and a wooden Indian, all purchased with the stolen money.

Heist! is the account of an unlikely crime destined to be remembered less for its sophistication than for its colorful cast of true-life characters. The theft has been featured on ABC's 20/20, America's Most Wanted, and the Today show and was the subject of the Discovery Channel's Unperfect Crime.

The Lost Boys is a pretty badass vampire movie. They just don't make vampire movies like that anymore. Mondo has released a couple of new Lost Boys posters created by Phantom City Creative. It's been awhile since I've seen this movie, these posters remind me that I should watch it again.

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US #1 Review

I really wasn't expecting to be so enamored with this comic. In fact, I was expecting quite the opposite. Videogame adaptations don't have a great track record, at least not yet. It was with those expectations that I started part 1 of Injustice: Gods Among Us, and to say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement.

Here's the thing. I'm not spoiling this book (at least not past the first few pages) because it's worth your time and part of what makes the issue so memorable is how it ends. What I will say is while I have seen this twist before, that doesn't stop it from being good. Crazy kudos to Tom Taylor (writer) and Mike S. Miller (artist of pgs. 21-30) for making those final pages quite stunning and at the same time heart wrenching.

Maybe I'm just ignorant to how good videogame based comics have gotten in the last few years. I've read titles based on game properties in the past (Tomb Raider, Street Fighter, etc), but none of them left much of an impression. You could have told me this was an Elseworlds story (DC Comics great line of alternate reality stories way back when) and I wouldn't have been the wiser. The writing was funny, smooth, and felt honest to who these characters are. This in lieu of the hackneyed job of some adaptations where you get the feeling that the first time the writer ever heard of these characters was when he was offered the job. Taylor has some great scenes of dialogue between Bruce & Clark, and after just finishing the latest Aquaman (written by vet Geoff Johns and featuring Batman & Superman) Taylor's voices for the characters felt right in line with the DC Universe proper.

While there are three different artists on the book, all of them have similar styles that seem to compliment each other. Jheremy Raapack's style fits Batman and Gotham quite nicely, and Axel Gimenez does a good job of bridging the gap until Miller takes over.

As a comic this stands on its own, regardless of what game it ties into. As a piece of marketing for Injustice it excels as well. If this is what we can expect from the story in Injustice, then count me in. If you're looking for something to read over the weekend, you might want to give this issue a look. It really is worth your time.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD - Official High Res Set Photo

Marvel has released a high resolution photo of Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and director Alan Taylor. A scanned version of this image was previously released, but this is much better. It comes from the latest issue of Empire Magazine. Apparently the director is kicking ass on set, and developing a movie that the fans are going to love!

In case you missed it, some new story details were revealed by executive producer Craig Kyle that the movie will start out with Asgard battered by war and The Nine Realms beset "by rag-tag invaders known as The Marauders," led by the villain Mister Sinister. So Asgard is in a weakened state, and this allows for the invasion of the Dark Elves, led by Malekith the Accursed, played Christopher Eccleston.

The film is set to hit theaters on November 8th, 2013, and from what I've been hearing the movie is going to be even more epic than the first one. Here's the synopsis:

Marvel Studios’ Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s Thor and Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Fun STAR WARS and STAR TREK Character Mashup Fan Art

Here's a couple of very fun Star Wars and Star Trek mashup illustrations created by Robert Shane. Captain Kirk and Princess Leia actually kind of works. I know J.J Abrams is working on both of these film properties now, but fan art like this is the only time we'll ever see any kind of crossover between these two worlds. I wonder if he'll sneak in some little Easter eggs though.

Hot Toys has released a series of photos for their Black Widow action figure. Apparently these photos show off the final product design of the deluxe collectible. After seeing Scarlett Johansson in this role, I can't imagine anyone else doing it. She's great as this character. Now... is it just me, or is it a little disturbing seeing a toy that is teasingly unzipping herself?

The movie-accurate Black Widow collectible is specially crafted based on the image of Scarlett Johansson in the movie, highlighting the newly sculpted head, hair implantation, prominent body shape, highly detailed costume and accessories.

The action figure will be available in March and costs $189.99. You can pre-order yours by clicking here.

First Look at James Wan's INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2

I'm a big fan of James Wan's Insidious, and I'm very excited about this second chapter in the story. Patrick WilsonRose Byrne, Lin Shaye, and Ty Simpkins have all returned to reprise their roles. Wan has been tweeting out some fun little behind-the-scenes photos from the set of the film via his Twitter account @creepypuppet. The image above came with the folling note: "You need lots of candles for hypnosis."

There's no story details on what the sequel will be about, but since it involves the same actors, it's safe to assume that it will pick up where the last film left off -- with Wilson being taken over by an evil spirit that's been trying to get a hold of him his whole life.

First Dark Trailer for the Vampire Thriller BYZANTIUM

$

The vampire film genre is never going to go away, all we can do is choose to watch what we think are the best vampire movies being made. Here's a solid looking movie from director Neil Jordan called Byzantium. It has a great cast of actors that includes Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan, Sam Riley, Jonny Lee Miller, Daniel Mays, and Caleb Landry Jones. The movie also premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and I've heard it was really good. I think it looks like it'll be worth checking out.

Seventeen years after Neil Jordan first dipped into the vampire genre with Interview With the Vampire, his Byzantium proves that he has lost none of his taste for the bloody and Gothic. Drenched in a rich, suitably gloomy atmosphere, Jordan brings a crystalline vision to bear on this story of two female vampires who wreak havoc on an unsuspecting English seaside community, as the film fluctuates between gory mayhem and melancholic reflection.

Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan) is a precocious girl with a bent for storytelling. A natural introvert, her idea of a good time is to put pen to paper and reflect on her inner life. Her “sister” Clara (Gemma Arterton) is the complete opposite: extroverted and sexual, she struts around in stilettos and skin-tight garb, attracting hungry male gazes wherever she goes. Both carry secrets from deep in their shared past — all 200 years of it — which bubbles to the surface as Jordan wends his way through the twists and turns of the plot. It turns out that Clara was involved in a passionate love affair during the Napoleonic Wars, while at the same time Eleanor was abandoned as a child. In the present, both seek to preserve their secret from their unsuspecting new companions. Eleanor falls for a sweet young waiter (Caleb Landry Jones), while Clara settles on a homey, unsuspecting man (Daniel Mays) who has just come into an inheritance: the Byzantium Hotel, which has seen better days. The fun begins as Eleanor and Clara shack up in the hotel, feeding off their victims while attempting to stay one step ahead of their pursuers, who are hot on the duo’s trail after Clara rather violently disposes of a particularly seedy pickup.

The movie should be released sometime this year. Check out the international trailer, and let us know if you think it looks like a good vampire film or not!

Mark Millar Offers Up Fun Info on X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Comic writer Mark Millar recently did an interview with SFX, and offered up some really fun details about the movie. He confirms that the Sentinels will play a big part in the story which is great! It's about time we see them on the big screen. He also says that Kitty Pryde fans won't be disappointed in her role in the film, so I image she's going to have a decent size part in the story. Here's a few excerpts from that interview....

The cast of X-Men characters announced for Days of Future Past is huge – they can’t ALL be in it with “starring roles”, surely? How are so many X-Men going to fit in one film?

It has actually been very well put together – Simon Kinberg and Matthew Vaughn worked on it together and they are both great at what they do. Then Bryan Singer came in, and, of course, he is Mr X-Men and he knows exactly how everything works. Just look at these first two X-Men movies: despite the huge cast of characters it all came together really well. These two movies never felt like overload and the balance was really, really good. On the other hand I though the third film felt crowded, but then Singer is excellent at working with ensemble casts. So with this one I feel it is all fine. I have read the screenplay and it doesn’t feel rushed and it doesn’t feel like it is too many characters.

How big a role do the Sentinels play? Will giant robots be in vogue after Pacific Rim?

I hadn’t actually thought about that [laughs]. Yeah, that is true isn’t it? You will have a couple of big movies with giant robots in them. I don’t really want to give too much away but the Sentinels are a big feature of this story. They will be cool and this will deliver on all of the teasers. We’ve all been waiting for this ever since X-Men: The Last Stand showed us one of their heads. Now it is finally coming, and we only have to pay ten quid to see it in the cinema whereas they’re having to pay $100 million to deliver it. So I’m delighted [laughs].

Kitty Pryde – is she finally going to have a decent big screen role?

Ach, I cannae get into that [laughs]. As soon as I say something it will turn into a big internet story. Let me put it this way though: Kitty Pryde fans will not be disappointed.

Can we expect to see any more X-Men spin-off movies?

I hope so. I think that the X-Men universe is as interesting as, if not more interesting than, the Marvel universe. There are a lot of things you can exploit in there. Comics are actually really good at sussing out what works and what doesn’t. It all comes down to what sustains a title and what doesn’t – and that is why you have so many of the X-Men characters with their own line of comics. I think a lot of these characters deserve their own movies – there are a good half dozen that I would like to see do their own thing.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is currently scheduled to hit theaters July 18th, 2014. To read more of the interview that includes talk of Kick-Ass 3, Dredd, and The Dark Knight click here.

A&E has released a great new promo trailer and poster for their upcoming psychological thriller series Bates Motel. Freddie Highmore has got such a great creepy look! The show comes from executive producers Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights), and it has a great cast of actors that also includes Vera Farmiga, Max Thieriot, Olivia Cooke, Nicola Peltz, Nestor Carbonell, and Mike Vogel.

In Bates Motel, following the tragic death of her husband, Norma Bates buys a motel on the outskirts of the idyllic coastal town of White Pine Bay, seeking a fresh start. As Norma and Norman get ensconced in their new home, they discover this town isn't quite what it seems, and the locals aren’t so quick to let them in on their secrets. But the Bates’ are done being pushed around and will do whatever it takes to survive – and will do whatever it takes to protect their own secrets.

The series is set to premiere on Monday, March 18th at 10pm, I can't wait to see how this turns out!

SKYRIM Swag - Glow-in-the-Dark Nirnroot Vial

Wandering the strange land of Skyrim, you probably came across a strange, glowing plant that hums just a little when you get near it. This strange piece of Flora is known as Nirnroot. You can harvest the Nirnroot for alchemy (alchemical?) purposes, or you could just dump all of it in one of your houses because your character is a Nirnroot hoarder.

Portal and Portkey over on Etsy have crated a little vial that has a piece of Nirnroot in it. The cool thing about it is that after the lights go out, it glows in the dark like it would in the game. I doubt it will hum, that would take some actual magic to make that happen.

Here is a description from the page:

This pendant is 4cm tall and contains one large and two small glow in the dark Nirnroot fronds, each delicately harvested and preserved just for you.

All three of the free floating leaves and the other particles in the liquid they are floating in glow in the dark. The effect is an ethereal, glowing blue-green color.

Included in this order:
1 pendant
1 18" silver-colored ball chain

To get the glow effect, expose the pendant to direct bright light for 30 seconds to a full minute. After that, turn out the lights and enjoy!

The vial costs $18.00, which is a really awesome price considering that it is Skyrim swag. Head over to the Etsy page to grab one today.

CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 - Emily VanCamp Cast in Lead Female Role!

Marvel has found their leading lady for Captain America: The Winter Soldier! Emily VanCamp is the lucky girl who will be making her leap from the small screen to the big screen. The actress is best known for her role in ABC's drama thriller Revenge.

There's no confirmation on what character she'll play, but it's been speculated that it will be Sharon Carter, the niece of Margaret "Peggy" Carter who was played by Hayley Atwell in the first Captain America film. At one point Anna Kendrick (Scott Pilgrim, The Twilight Saga), Felicity Jones (Like CrazyCemetery Junction, The Tempest), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abby),  Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies), Alison Brie (Community) and Imogen Poots (Fright Night28 Weeks Later) were all rumored to be up for the lead female role.

I actually think it's great VanCamp landed the part, I've liked her in the shows Revenge and Everwood. She's a solid young actress, and I think she'll do great in the film. What do you think of her being cast in the film?

Anthony and Joe Russo will direct franchise newcomers Anthony Mackie in the role of the Falcon and Frank Grillo as Crossbones. Also along for the ride are characters from Marvel's The Avengers, including Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Cobie Smulders. The film arrives in 2D and 3D theaters on April 4, 2014.

Hilarious Dark Comedy Short Film BEAR by Nash Edgerton

About a year ago we showed you an awesomely funny short film called Spider by director Nash Edgerton, brother of actor Joel Edgerton. We now are able to bring you the full short for his other film Bear, which I think is even funnier than Spider. I actually saw this short for the first time last year up at Sundance. It stars Nash Edgerton, Teresa Palmer, and Warwick Thornton.

I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did! I won't go into detail on the story because I don't want to ruin the experience, but here's a brief synopsis to prep you...

Jack has the perfect birthday surprise planned for Emelie. Sometimes, though, plans go horrifically wrong.

Also, I suggest to skip the first 10 seconds of the video because for some reason they tease the surprise. Enjoy the show!

RESIDENT EVIL REVELATIONS: Bringing Tension Back to Survival Horror

$

You can peep the newest trailer for the HD rerelease of Resident Evil Revelations below, and it's hard to not get a bit nostalgic after watching. Revelations was originally released on the 3DS to very high praise from critics and fans, so it makes business sense that Capcom would release it on other platforms. Though this doesn't seem to be just another cobbled together port. Capcom has supposedly reworked and in some instances rebuilt the graphics and textures of the game to take advantage of the additional power granted by the 360 and PS3. They've also added in a new enemy type as well as expanded on Raid mode from the original release.

Even without the HD graphics and the new features, I'm not sure I could pass this up. I enjoyed my time with RE:6, but there was something missing. After watching the trailer for Revelations, I know what that is, and I know I want it back. I love how in previous games Capcom went above and beyond to make you feel like a complete badass. However, that's not what made the series great. It was the tension they were able to create, and how every corner could bring something horrific upon you. I enjoyed 5 and I enjoyed 6, but they weren't true Resident Evils, not for me anyway.

Here's hoping that Revelations is the back-to-its-roots kick in the pants that we've been waiting for.

Vin Diesel has released yet another cool photo from his upcoming new sci-fi film Riddick. I guess he's just keeping the fans happy. Hey, I'm not complaining, I'll take whatever I can get! I'm excited about the movie! The photo came along with the following note: "The fate of the Alpha Furyan."

Riddick will be released in theaters on September 6th, 2013. It also stars Karl Urban (Star Trek), Jordi Molla (Bad Boys II), Matt Nable (Killer Elite), Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), Bokeem Woodbine (Total Recall), Dave Bautista (The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption), Conrad Pla (Immortals), Raoul Trujillo (Apocalypto), Nolan Funk (Aliens in America), and Keri Hilson.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.
