Why A Song Of Ice And Fire Is Better Than Lord Of The Rings

0
0

If you've just been watching HBO's hit series Game Of Thrones, you're definitely missing out. The book series, A Song Of Ice And Fire, may be a tad longer than a season's worth of episodes, but it's a future American classic to be sure. I'm four books into the series and have been amazed thus far and would recommend it (perhaps not for children) over Lord Of The Rings. Why, though? (Hint: It's not boobs.)

Two words: "The Game."

The Game of Thrones is not only the title of the first book in the series, it's also a major plot point for the whole series. It is "The Game" that makes a sellsword just as relevant as the ruling king in the series. One thing George R.R. Martin did very well with this series was character development. At times you have to wonder if this world is at all imaginary or if he was just taking accounts from some ancient book and putting it to print.

He very well might have as every character in the story becomes relevant at some point down the line. Literally...EVERY CHARACTER. I always felt like characters come and go throughout LOTR to serve a single purpose in advancing the story. The characters in this series, however, can be mentioned in passing in a couple lines in one book, only to have a third of the next book dedicated to their role in the events going on! It's hard to expound upon that without revealing some major spoilers from the series so I'll just leave it at that.

Because "The Game" is played by so many in the series, this is the first book I've read that beautifully translates to being told through multiple perspectives. It gives you a sense of scale when characters lands away receive word about something that happened a book ago, while people within Westeros are kept up to speed via raven. I also think the inclusion of sea travel (don't ask me why) gives me the illusion that the world of A Song Of Ice And Fire is much more vast than LOTR, but that's just my opinion.

While "The Game" and all the scheming and plotting that goes behind it is one of the major strengths for A...Song Of....Ice *hand cramp!*...And Fire (I think I found a third reason why they stuck with GOT) over LOTR, I do have another perhaps more controversial reason. George R.R. Martin does a good job of balancing Fantasy and drama, something not all Fantasy writers do. While the series might not be the most hardcore fantasy in the genre, four books in, I can say there is quite a bit of the fantastical going on. Just watching the first two seasons of the show you can see how we were gently led into the dragons, wights, etc...and in doing so, Martin succeeded in capturing an audience I don't think he would've gotten if he'd gone out guns blazing. Like I said, might be a bit controversial, but none the less true in my opinion.

Let it be known that this is not a diss of LOTR. I grew up on the books and still enjoy watching the films from time to time. That being said, I believe it's high time the torch is passed to a new champion of the genre. Like I said, I strongly encourage you to check out these books if you haven't yet. If you've been following the series and don't want to reread, you can start into the third book with just some minor things you might be unaware of (save one Jojen and Meera Reed), but all in all the series does a decent job keeping things in line. You won't be disappointed.

"They never fail who die in a great cause." ― George Gordon Byron

Here's a video supercut featuring 43 heroically badass sacrifices from characters in movies. It's always inspiring to see someone risk their life to save someone else. It's the ultimate selfless act. The video was created by CriticaDaqueleFilme. Is there any scene in a movie involving the heroic sacrifice of a character that brought you to tears?

Juan Antonio Bayona to Direct Sci-Fi Film for Warner Bros.

The Orphanage director Juan Antonio Bayona is set to develop an untitled sci-fi film project for Warner Bros. The script for the film was written by Eric Roth, who's written some great movies such as The Insider, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Munich, Ali, and Forrest Gump. The fact that the script was written by Roth tells me that this movie's going to be really good. As of right now there's no details on the story.

Bayona seems like a solid director who most recently directed the tsunami survival drama The Impossible with Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. I'm looking forward to see what this project ends up being. We'll give you more information as it becomes available.

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Super-Bowl Teaser

It seems like it's been a while since we've seen a teaser trailer for a trailer. But this time we have a teaser trailer for a TV spot. That's right, Disney has released an 11-second teaser for Sam Raimi's OZ The Great and Powerful, so you all know that you'll be able to see a full TV sport for the film while watching the big game. I'm not a big sports guy, and my favorite part of the Superbowl is watching the movie spots and commercials, but I'll pick a team and get into the game as well.

In a recent interview with Total Film, Raimi talked about the movie, saying that he wasn't trying to remake The Wizard Of Oz, and that he didn't have to reinvent any of the film's history in the prequel.

I think The Wizard Of Oz is such a great film and I would never attempt to [remake that]. You could call [Oz] a prequel, that would be accurate - but I didn’t have to re-invent any of that fantastic history.

Mitchell [Kapner, screenwriter] took about 40% of the events that were sprinkled here and there about Oz from Baum’s books and really created the other 60% himself out of his imagination, because there just wasn’t enough there. I gave him notes, I brought aboard a second writer to help fill out some other areas of the story, my brother did a little work on the script, and all the actors contributed. It really was a very big collaboration.

Hopefully it all worked out, and we get to see a great fantasy adventure OZ movie. I love what I've seen from it so far. The movie stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams. It's set to hit theaters March 8th.

Disney’s fantastical adventure Oz The Great and Powerful, directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora, Evanora and Glinda, who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

When small-time magician Oscar Diggs pulls one flimflam too many, he finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz where he must somehow transform himself into the great and powerful Wizard—and just maybe into a better man as well.

During an interview with IAMRogue, Cobie Smulders revealed some details about Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. The How I Met Your Mother actor was discussing her role in Safe Haven, and she spoke a bit about her role as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo (NBC's Community) are directing the movie with production slated for March.

When asked when she would join the production, she stated:

I don’t know the exact dates. I know it's some time in March or June." She goes on to reveal that she has not seen the full script for the Captain America sequel, she said: "I’ve seen parts of it, but yeah I don’t know much. This is Marvel! They don’t let you know anything." "It’s very watermarked scripts, heavily watermarked," She explained of the measures taken by Marvel Studios to present any screenplay pages from leaking. "Yeah, they don’t let you know like the day of, but they are very secretive and I think they are still figuring stuff out.

Joss Whedon is returning to write and direct The Avengers 2 for 2014 and is currently hard at work on the pilot episode of the S.H.I.E.L.D. television series for ABC. Here is what she had to say when asked if she would be appearing in the series in some capacity:

The commitments to [How I Met Your Mother] don’t affect it," Smulders said. "And I can’t really say but there are definite talks about it.

Agent Hill will be part of the Marvel Universe in many future films. Here is what Smulders had to say about that:

Oh yeah! I’m very excited. I will do Maria Hill until they fire me and hire someone else to do it.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will re-team Smulders' Agent Hill with her fellow Avengers actors Chris Evans (Puncture), Samuel L. Jackson (Django Unchained), and Scarlett Johansson (Hitchcock). New cast members include Anthony Mackie (Gangster Squad) and Frank Grillo (The Grey). Toby Jones and Sebastian Stan are set to reprise their respective roles from The First Avenger. The film hits theaters on April 4, 2014.

THE WOLVERINE - More Story Details Revealed!

0

Some more details have been unleashed for James Mangold's The Wolverine! Producer Hutch Parker recently talked to Empire about the film, and revealed why Logan ends up in Japan, and how it takes him on his most personal and challenging journey yet. For those of you who want to know more about this movie here ya go:

We pick up Logan in a very isolated state, full of self-loathing. He is sought out by a young Asian woman for reasons he doesn't fully understand, who is asking him to follow her to Japan where he is meant to reconnect with someone he spent prison-time with in Nagasaki. And the legacy of that experience - effectively Logan saved him - is that this man is on his deathbed, and is looking to give him a gift, to thank him for the life he's had. But this gift draws Logan into a very complex and very unexpected world within both contemporary Japan, and to some degree the feudal history of Japan. The quality of this story is that it takes Logan on such a challenging personal journey. He's so in isolation, so out of his element. It's a much more powerful distillation of his character than you've seen before. It's why people have always love this particular story.

It also explains why they were shooting scenes of Logan in a WWII POW camp. I think that's the best explanation of the story that someone from the film production has offered up so far.

The Wolverine is being directed by James Mangold, and stars Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, and Brian Tee.

The movie is set to hit theaters on July 26th, 2013. The director recently talked about the dark tone of the film which you can read about here, and you can check out the most recent image from the film here

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

New Photos of Nicolas Cage Wearing SUPERMAN Costume

As many of you know, back in the 90s Tim Burton was developing a Superman movie for Warner Bros. called Superman Lives. It was going to star Nicolas Cage and Sandra Bullock. The movie never ended up happening, but a ton of special effects and prep work was done for the film. Over the years we've seen a lot of those things pop up online, but today we bring you a couple of brand new photos of Cage in costume.

It definitely looks a lot better than the first image that we saw of him with that crazy long hair style. You can see more of the Burton's Batman influence in this costume design, and it looks a lot more faithful to the comic book. In all honesty, it doesn't look that bad. It's the first thing I've seen from this movie that doesn't look absolutely ridiculous. What do you think of this costume design?

DEAD SPACE 3 - Phil Collins and Isaac's Memories Are in This Latest Trailer

In a week, the latest entry to the acclaimed survival-horror series known as Dead Space will come out. After having my reservations with the new way they are doing things this time around, I have since let go of that and I am actually pretty excited about this game. Visceral Games was good about getting out there and letting people know that this will still be the Dead Space that we all know and love.

The latest (and probably last) trailer has some rendered cutscenes along with gameplay footage that relies on the memories of Isaac. There is also a bad/good cover of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight." The song choice is odd but it works, I guess.

Now let's get this week over with so I can start cutting limbs off creatures, again.

New IRON MAN 3 Toy Reveals Deep Space Suit - What Does it Mean?

It looks like there's a possibility that Tony Stark is going to show off another awesome suit of armor in Iron Man 3, a deep space suit. This is just a toy design, but it came along with three other toy designs for suits of armor that we know for a fact will be in Iron Man 3, so there's a good chance that this Deep Space Suit will be among them. Marvel President Kevin Fiege even teased Iron Man in Space in a previous interview with /Film saying,

[Guardians of the Galaxy] is where a lot of that will really come to fruition and to me it’s okay and The Avengers is the place to mash it all up, because that’s what Avengers is for and you can have Iron Man in outer space. How’s that going to affect him in Iron Man 3 or 4? Well the truth is that’s in there now. (Laughs) He’s seen some shit, but he’s also Tony Stark and can blow a lot of stuff off so the story of Iron Man 3, as we’ve already talked about, is very insular and very Tony Stark centric as redefined by Shane Black.

The suit could give us some insight as to what we might see in The Avengers 2 or even Guardians of the Galaxy. There was a rumor reported a couple of months ago that Iron Man could very well end up making an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy. It makes sense that Stark would have a suit that he could use in space, especially after what he went through in The Avengers. Iron Man 3 is the perfect place to introduce the armor since it looks like future Marvel movie installments will be taking place in space, leading up to a battle against Thanos.

I'm excited to see how this suit will be implemented in the movie, and it looks like it's going to be another badass suit for Stark to do battle in. What are your theories behind the Deep Space Suit?

THE LONE RANGER - New Poster and Super Bowl Teaser

Disney is planning to show a 90-second trailer for Gore Verbinski's epic-looking western, The Lone Ranger at the big game. It costs $4 million for 30 seconds of air time during the Super Bowl, so Disney is paying $12 million dollars to show off their new movie to football fans. That's just crazy to me. To make sure people know a new trailer is coming, the studio has released a teaser for the Super Bowl spot and a poster.

The movie stars Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson, and Helena Bonham Carter. There was a ridiculously high budget on the film; they spent around $250 million. it looks like it will be fun, but $250 million worth of fun? I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'm sure the studio is really hoping that Depp can pull in an audience for this one. I've seen a lot of lack of excitement for the film, not only on the internet, but even with general audiences. Whenever the trailer plays in a theater there seems to be a lot of moans and groans from the audience.

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “The Lone Ranger,” a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

The Lone Ranger hits July 3rd, 2013.

MASS EFFECT 3: Hudson & Gamble Tease New DLC

If you've discovered Leviathan and liberated Omega you might be looking for something else to do, but Bioware has seemingly got you covered. Casey Hudson (Executive Producer) & Mike Gamble (Producer) posted two tweets this morning that included the pics below with some vague comments. Peep them below.

The first shot shows what appears to be a casino called Silver Coast, and the second shows a pissed off Krogan with a really big hammer. Some have deduced in the comments that it looks like Thessia, but we will have to wait for more information before we know for sure. As someone who just finished Leviathan and Omega (and thoroughly enjoyed both) I'm actually damn excited to get my hands on some new content. So what's the consensus? Are you happy to see more DLC or are there too many other games to play to go back to Mass Effect? Interested to hear your thoughts.

JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie's Future Depends on MAN OF STEEL

0
0

It looks like this new Justice League movie being developed by Warner Bros. is still up in the air. Will Beal is writing the script, and we've been hearing about the villain and characters that will be involved in the story over the last couple of months. Even though the movie is supposed to be released in 2015, there's still a chance that it won't happen. Before the studio makes a final decision on whether they will movie forward with the project or not, they're going to wait to see how Zack Snyder's Man of Steel does. According to Variety,

Stakes are high for "Man of Steel." Other than Nolan's Batpics, Warners has not been able to effectively exploit the DC library. Its 2011 "Green Lantern" underperformed, and a "Justice League" film wouldn't likely be in theaters before 2015, as Warner's top brass has indicated that they are awaiting the results of "Man of Steel," which opens June 14, before moving further ahead.

It makes me wonder if they are planning to hire Snyder to direct the Justice League if Man of Steel does well. There's been talk of him already helping out with the story. Maybe they're also waiting to see if they want Henry Cavill back to reprise his role in the movie if audience like what they see.

I hope Man of Steel ends up being a great film! I've been waiting for an amazing Superman movie, and I would love to eventually see a Justice League movie happen. It's ridiculous that it hasn't happened already, and if there's any time to do it, it's now... even if Man of Steel doesn't do well. Hopefully Warner Bros. eventually finds their comic book movie groove.

Six Movie Ads to Air During Super Bowl XLVII

0
0

Like many of you, one of my favorite parts about watching the Super Bowl is the movie TV spots and the commercials. Thanks to Deadline, we now know what movie trailers we'll see during Super Bowl XLVII. In case you didn't know, it costs $4 million for a 30 second spot. That's a lot of freakin' money! They could make a couple of really good independent films for that much money!

So here's a list of TV spots that you'll be seeing during the Big Game:

Oz: The Great And Powerful is getting a 60-second spot.

The Lone Ranger is getting a 90-second spot.

Iron Man 3 is getting a 60-second spot.

Fast and Furious 6 will be getting it's first 30-second spot.

World War Z is getting a 30-second spot.

Star Trek Into Darkness is getting a 30-second spot.

I'm sure a few more TV spots for other films will be added to the line-up in the near future. Maybe we'll see something for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Are there another other movies you'd like to see ads for during the the bowl game?

IRON MAN 3 - Robert Downey Jr. Discusses Rhodey's Role in the Film

0
0

As we wait to see the latest trailer for Iron Man 3, which is set to air during the Super Bowl, we have some more information on one of the film's main characters, Rhodes (Don Cheadle). In a recent interview with EW, Robert Downey Jr. gives some details on the character and the role he plays in the film, saying,

Rhodey is much more in the dead center of things. He’s much more dynamic. We’ve made this decision that while Tony is a technical guy, he’s not really a trained guy. There’s a lot of fun to be had with Don because he’s really good with hardware and he’s a martial artist, so it’s been really fun exploiting this possibility of Tony having moments like the one in AVENGERS, like the one with Cap where he decides, 'Oh screw it, he probably knows what he’s doing.' So there’s a lot of that and a lot more fun and a lot more depth to Rhodey this time around.

I've been waiting for Rhodey to really have his moment in the story, and it sounds like this is going to be it. Downey Jr. goes on to tease one of the action scenes in the film, saying,

We’ve just been talking about one sequence – the top-secret name is the Boot/Glove Sequence, I can tell you that, just between you and me – it’s where Tony only has one gauntlet and one boot and he has to escape multiple captors. It’s really fun, dude. We’re taking everything from his first gauntlet test in the first movie up through the most extreme stuff we thought up for Iron Man 2 and The Avengers and pulling on all of it and making this one big, extended challenge of physics.

That sounds like it could be a really fun scene to watch. In fact, the first bit of concept art released for the film at Comic-Con shows the scene that he's talking about (see above).

The movie is set to hit theaters on May 3rd, 2013, and I'm sure the new Super Bowl spot is going to be backed full of fun new footage. I imagine it won't be as dark at the first trailer. I think they'll show some more of the film's humor and action this time around.

Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Great STAR WARS INTO DARKNESS Mashup Trailer

Want a taste of what J.J. Abrams Star Wars is going to feel like? Here's a fun mashup trailer that brings together footage from the original Star Wars trilogy, and the music form the latest Star Trek Into Darkness trailer. This fake trailer is cut together very well, and really does a great job giving off that Abrams movie vibe. It also does a great job making the old trilogy feel fresh. The video was created by Ross Thompson, and it goes perfectly with the fanmade poster above. Check it out!

Gore Verbinski to Direct Adaptation of PYONGYANG

Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is set to produce and direct a big screen adaptation of the graphic novel called Pyongyang, created by Guy Delisle. The script for the movie is being written by Steve Conrad, who also wrote The Pursuit of Happyness and the Ben Stiller-directed movie The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty.

The film is a dark comedy about outsourcing run amok when a young animator sent to North Korea is accused of espionage. Here's a more detailed description from the graphic novel...

Famously referred to as one of the "Axis of Evil" countries, North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today. In early 2001 cartoonist Guy Delisle became one of the few Westerners to be allowed access to the fortresslike country. While living in the nation's capital for two months on a work visa for a French film animation company, Delisle observed what he was allowed to see of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered; his findings form the basis of this remarkable graphic novel. Pyongyang is an informative, personal, and accessible look at a dangerous and enigmatic country.

This sounds like a great project for Verbinski to take on. I enjoy his directing style, and he's a good storyteller. I hope his next film The Lone Ranger ends up being a good one for him. What do you think about this story getting the big screen treatment--is Verbinski the right man for the job?

Two New Clips from THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS Part 2

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns part 2 is available today for purchase, and it's a must watch! This second part is even better than the first. If you liked the Part 1, then you're going to love this! Here's a couple of new clips for the animated film to prep you for the sequel! The first is a great fight sequence in which Batman kicks the living shit out of The Joker. The second clip features a threatening conversation between Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne. Check 'em out, and let us know if you'll be grabbing yourself a copy of the movie today!

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 picks up where the first left off with Batman having returned to Gotham with an all new Robin, however not everyone is welcoming him back to the streets. Gotham City's police are on a manhunt for the Batman as is the newly released Joker. As Batman attempts to stop the Joker one last time, the United States goverment teams up with Superman to bring the Dark Knight down for good.

Peter Weller returns as the voice of the aged Dark Knight along with Ariel Winter as Carrie Kelly, the new Robin. "Lost's" Michael Emerson provides the voice of the 'cured' Joker and Mark Valley will play the Man of Tomorrow, Superman.

Amazingly Funny Dark Comedy Short - THE APOCALYPSE

Here's a dark comedy short film from Sundance 2013 called The Apocalypse. It's awesomely entertaining and unexpected! The movie was written and directed by Andrew Zuchero, and the story centers on four uninspired friends who try to come up with a terrific idea for how to spend their Saturday afternoon. Coming up with ideas isn't the best idea though, because it brings on the end of the world. Heads start to explode! It's amazingly hilarious, and you're going to love it! Enjoy the show!

New TV Spot for JACK THE GIANT SLAYER with New Footage

Warner bros. has released a new TV spot for Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer with some more new footage from the film. Although the movie looks like it could be fun, I'm not really excited about it. I'll see it, but it looks like there's a chance it could be a dud. Hopefully it exceeds my expectations.

The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy, Eleanor Tomlinson, and EwanMcGregor. Here's the synopsis:

Jack the Giant Slayer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittinglyopens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend–and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

The film is set to hit theaters on March 1st, 2013. Are you excited about seeing the movie?

These movie posters by artist Adam Thompson are awesomely geeky. I love The Avengers and Looper pieces especially, but each one does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of the movie with very little. Check them out and share your thoughts in the rant back section.
