Disney Confirms J.J. Abrams Is Directing STAR WARS!

0
0

Well, Disney has made it official! The studio has released an official press release saying that J.J. Abrams will in fact be directing Star Wars: Episode VII! I'm so happy that this is happening. I know Abrams is going to do an amazing job bringing us the Star Wars films that all of us fans have been waiting to see! Not only will he be working on Star Wars, but he'll also continue developing Star Trek for Paramount Pictures.

The press release includes statements from Abrams, George Lucas, and Kathleen Kennedy and also confirms that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg will be consulting on the film. Check it out below!

J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller.  He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”

“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg.  Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm’s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

And here are some other quotes from Star Wars veterans Dennis Muren, Ben Burtt, and Matthew Wood on working with Abrams from the official site:

Visual Effects Supervisor Dennis Muren, ASC, whose credits include the original Star Wars trilogy as well as landmark films such as E.T. and Jurassic Park, also worked with Abrams on Super 8. “He puts everything he has into his work,” said Muren. “He totally immerses himself. He’s got such a visual eye, which is so important to the Star Wars films. It seems that a lot of the same things that were in George when he made the first Star Wars films are also in J.J. I think he’s going to fit into the other movies perfectly, with the energy that J.J. has. We’re kick-starting Star Wars again with dynamite. It will knock people out, including the people who get to work on it. I think it’s a great choice.”

Ben Burtt, responsible for such iconic Star Wars sounds as Darth Vader’s breathing, R2-D2′s beeps and the classic lightsaber, has worked with Abrams as sound designer and sound editor on Star Trek and Super 8. “J.J represents the next generation of filmmakers from those that were making Star Wars when I started,” said Ben Burtt. “When he was a teen, he was a fan of Star Wars, and a great deal of his love for movies came out of his reaction of that first Star Wars film. You feel that he’s already invested so many years in it, and he’s going to propel it forward in a new way. In other words, you’re having a fan who has grown up and developed tremendous directorial skills finding himself at the steering wheel to take the franchise into the next stage. I feel like I’m there watching history turn over from one era to another.”

Matthew Wood, who served as supervising sound editor on Super 8, similarly grew up as a Star Wars fan before working on the films through the prequels. “Working with him, it was so obvious to me that J.J. and I have the same nostalgic love of that era. Now we have someone from that generation who is going to be at the helm of the Star Wars franchise that I’ve known and worked on, so it’s a great circle. Just seeing what he did with Super 8 and capturing those moments, and knowing what was so special about that era, it’s going to speak to a new generation of audience as well.”

Kickstarter Documentary on Tim Burton's SUPERMAN LIVES

Tim Burton's Superman Lives is the most interesting looking Superman movie that never got made. The project ended up being killed. Over the years, we've seen a bunch of behind the scenes photos and video test footage of the crazy costumes and Nicholas Cage as the Man of Steel. The movie looked like it would have sucked hard, but we all would have still gone out and seen it. It would have been interesting to see what the finished product ended up looking like. It definitely would have been strange. So why did the movie fall apart never to be made? Well, a Kickstarter campaign has been started to give us that story!

The man behind series such as Metalocalypse and Venture BrosJon Schnepp, is a huge Superman fan. He's the one that wants to bring this documentary to life. It would be called The Death of Superman Lives; What Happened?  It would include interviews with director Tim Burton, first screenplay writer Kevin Smith, and original cast members Nicolas Cage and Sandra Bullock. He hopes he ends up getting enough money to actually shoot a few minutes of the script that Smith wrote, and also get some artists to work on bringing to life the Braniac design that Burton wanted to use. Here's a little background on the doc...

The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? is a Feature Length Documentary about the unmade movie "Superman Lives". This film, out of all the various attempts to make a Superman movie between 1987 and 2006, would have stood the test of time and become a bonafide Cult Classic nowadays. I am not alone with my intense interest in knowing everything I can about this project, and so now I'm embarking on making a Documentary that will cover everything ever made for this film, from interviewing as many people as I can who were involved, to including actually recreating scenes from the script!!!

I’ve been interested in this film since it was first announced back in the late 90’s. Nicolas Cage was announced as Superman, Kevin Smith was announced as the Writer, Tim Burton was announced as the Director, and fans have had very heavy opinions, both positive and negative, on all of this. As news slowly bubbled out, news buzzed around about Rainbow Robot Outfits, Brainiac Skull ships, Superman not "flying", Fighting a Giant Spider, Polar Bears guarding the Fortress of Solitude. It all sounded so crazy, so weird, so different, that I honestly was hoping that they would actually make it, just so we would have something different from what had come before. It never happened. Cut to almost 15 years later, and I really wish I could slap that “Superman Lives” disc into my player, and watch this guaranteed weird, strange, and original new take on the mythology of the Superman character. By this time, whether it was a success or failure at the box office, It would have for sure been a cult classic, due mainly to its inspired casting, and its tremendous bravery in it’s attempt to merge toy sales with the weirdness.

I hope the doc gets made. I'm sure there's a lot of interesting stuff that could be uncovered about Superman Lives. Here's a little video explanation for the Kickstarter as well! Click here for more information!

DOCTOR WHO and TRANSFORMERS New Zealand Minted Coins

In celebration of Doctor Who's 50th anniversary, the New Zealand Mint and BBC Worldwide have announced a commemorative Doctor Who coin. The coin has a face value of $2, and it will only cost you $155 to get one. That seems fair. There's also a Transformers coin set they've made that will set you back $280. It looks like 2013 is shaping up to be a great year in the geek coin market! I don't know about you, but I wouldn't spend more than $2 on a $2 coin...

GAME OF THRONES Stills Tease Season 3

Here are some Game of Thrones stills from season 3. The HBO series kicks off its new season on March 31, and I can't wait. Check out the stills below and share your thoughts in the rant back section.

A Game of Thrones is the first novel in A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of high fantasy novels by American author George R. R. Martin. It was first published on 6 August 1996. The novel won the 1997 Locus Award, and was nominated for both the 1998 Nebula Award and the 1997 World Fantasy Award. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series has been adapted into an American fantasy television series create for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Filmed in a Belfast studio and on location elsewhere in Northern Ireland, Malta, Croatia, Iceland, and Morocco, it premiered on HBO in the United States on 17 April 2011.

Highly anticipated since its early stages of development, Game of Thrones has received universal acclaim by critics, although its use of nudity has been criticized. The series has won numerous awards and nominations — including two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Drama Series, a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Television Series – Drama, a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in Long Form, and a Peabody Award. Among the ensemble cast, Peter Dinklage won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film for his role as Tyrion Lannister.

The production design on this series is one of the reasons that I love watching this show each week.

THE SHINING Documentary ROOM 237 Has a Release Date!

0
0

For those of you who are fans of Stanely Kubrick's The Shining, you'll be happy to know that the documentary based on the film, Room 237, is set to be released by IFC on March 29th! I loved this documentary, and ever since I saw it at Sundance last year, I've been wanting so badly to watch it again! It's just packed full of awesome information, and conspiracy theories surrounding the film.

The theories presented are explored in nine segments, which are narrated by several different Shining fanatics while using footage from Kubrick's movie to show examples of the conclusions they've come too. Here's an excerpt from our review

I doubt anyone could find this film boring. The sometimes-insane-but-always-entertaining theories presented are captivating, and though a majority of them sound totally bonkers, occasionally someone brings up a point that makes sense. Personally, I love hearing people's opinions about film (especially if they're wacky) because it makes me analyze the movie in a way I wouldn't have on my own. Ever heard the theory that Ferris Bueller's Day Off takes place completely in Cameron Frye's head? Readings like that - ones that make you rethink what the entire film is doing and how it works - are my favorites, and Room 237 delivers those kinds of ideas in spades.

They touch on the conspiracy theory of Kubrick shooting fake footage of the first moon landing, citing weird facts like room 237 in the film is used on purpose because the moon is 237,000 miles away.

Here's the trailer for the film, in case you missed it. Make sure to check it out! It's going to blow your mind!

Washington and Wahlberg in First Look Photo from Action Flick 2 GUNS

0
0

Following his drug- and alcohol-fueled adventures in Robert Zemeckis' plane crash drama Flight, Denzel Washington is heading back to the action genre alongside Mark Wahlberg in the upcoming action film 2 Guns. Contraband director Baltasar Kormakur is at the helm of this undercover story of a DEA Agent and a Naval Intelligence Officer who investigate each other but are set up by the mob. JoBlo has the first look photo above, which doesn't give us a lot to go on other than the observations that A) Washington looks like a badass with a gun in his hand, and B) Wahlberg's character loves wearing denim suits for some reason.

I read the comic on which this film is based and wasn't too impressed by it - the story was very generic - and I thought Contraband was barely passable as an action movie, so I'm not excited about this movie at all. I'm open to being won over, but the trailer is going to have to be pretty stellar to make up for a bland photo like this. 2 Guns opens in theaters on August 16th, 2013.

Bruce Willis Jacks A Car in New Clip from A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD

0
0

IGN has the first clip from 20th Century Fox's upcoming sequel A Good Day to Die Hard, and...well...just watch it below and then we'll talk about it.

Yikes. Anyone who listened to our Die Hard and Die Hard 2 podcast knows that I'm a huge fan of the first film, but after watching this clip, it looks way closer to Live Free or Die Hard than anything in the original. I realize that the concept of sequels to this franchise is for each one to up the ante (from John McClane saving building, to an airport, to a city, to the US, and now the world), but having a bigger scope doesn't excuse just how bad this clip looks. The editing is terrible, and there's one shot on the bridge in which the cars from the previous shot seem to disappear.

I'm not talking about how ludicrous it is that McClane gets hit by a car, gets up, and then drives off a bridge only to drop the phrase "knock knock" - this is an action movie, you know you're going to get ridiculous things like that - but I'm talking about the actual filmmaking on display physically looking bad. I'm surprised Fox would choose this clip as the first one released, but I don't even think hardcore action movie buffs would admit that this gets them excited for the film. Maybe I'm wrong though; sound off in the comments and let us know what you think.

Deadpool Killustrated Art Covers

Artist Mike del Mundo has created some really fun book covers with Deadpool attacking Tom Sawyer, setting fire to Sherlock Holmes, haunting Ebenezer Scrooge, and bombing Moby Dick. The artist does a great job in recreating the style of cheap paperback covers I'd see at grocery stores as a kid, but with a Deadpool twist. I'd love to see what Deadpool would do to Romeo and Juliet (I'm guessing it would involve a large slingshot). Thanks to GeekDraw for sharing these Kill-tastic covers.

J.J. Abrams' Futuristic Cop Drama Gets Pilot Order at Fox

Deadline reports that the Fringe creator has a new sci-fi drama in the works. J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman have an untitled futuristic cop drama in the works. The show is being produced by Warner Bros. TV and Bad Robot, and is described "as an action-packed buddy cop show, set in the near future, when all LAPD officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids."

Wyman has been on Fringe since the first season. He penned the pilot and will executive produce with Bad Robot’s Abrams and Bryan Burk. Kathy Lingg is co-exec producing. I hope it is much better than Alcatraz was, but that is not saying much. Share your thoughts in the rant back section below.

Twisted Nightmarish Bloody Undead Teddy Bears

Here's a terrifyingly nightmarish collection of jacked up teddy bears, created by Phillip Blackman, called Undead Teds. He's taken a bunch of cute little teddy bears and then ripped the stuffy flesh away from their bodies and thown in some blood, bone, and gore. These are awesomely grisly and absolutly horrifiying. Hope you like them!

Some familiar faces are joining the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past. Director Bryan Singer tweeted that Anna Paquin (Rogue), Ellen Page (Kitty Pride) and Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) are set to reprise their roles in the new X-Men installment.

They will join Hugh Jackman, who will be reprising his role as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, as well as First Class stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence. On a side note, my excitement level for this movie has skyrocketed even more. It's so cool to see all these actors coming back to reprise their roles!

Who said we only did new movies? Avatar is the highest-grossing film of all time, but that doesn't mean it's free from sin. This was a suggestion from our friends at JoBlo (http://joblo.com), as well as a number of viewers, and we even used the extended edition to make sure no sin went without notice.

How DJANGO UNCHAINED Connects to PULP FICTION

0

As many of you already know, Quentin Tarantino's films are all kind of connected in his crazy movie universe. Tarantino confirmed in a previous interview that a minor character from Django Unchained that is an ancestor of a character from one of his other films. He didn't reveal who the character was though. Now, thanks to Reddit user thefirerisesnolan (via Badass Digest), we know that when Tarantino says the the Django Unchained character was minor, he wasn't kidding. In fact the only thing we see of him is a name on a wanted poster, and that name is Crazy Craig Koons, who's related to Christopher Walken's Pulp Fiction character Captain Koons. Check out the picture below! Looks like Django ended up killing his great-great-great-granddad.

For more information on Tarantino's connected universe, here's a solid article from IGN that breaks it all down.

Check out this incredibly cool Supergirl costume design inspired by the costume in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel! It was created by Josh of Fan Art Exhibit for a new IGN employee named Alexis who commissioned the piece so she could have a badass profile photo. I absolutely love the finished product.
