Ben Pearson and Elijah Reyes review Linsanity.

Director: Evan Jackson Leung

Synopsis: In February 2012, an entire nation of basketball fans unexpectedly went 'Linsane.' Stuck in the mire of a disappointing season, the New York Knicks did what no other NBA team had thought about doing. They gave backup point guard Jeremy Lin an opportunity to prove himself. He took full advantage, scoring more points in his first five NBA starts than any other player in the modern era, and created a legitimate public frenzy in the process. Prior to this now-legendary run, Lin had faced adversity in his career at every turn. He wasn't offered a scholarship by any major university, nor was he drafted by any NBA team after a standout collegiate career at Harvard.

Joaquin Phoenix to Star in INHERENT VICE

Joaquin Phoenix has been cast in Paul Thomas Anderson's next film Inherent Vice, based on the detective novel by Thomas Pynchon.

Phoenix gave the performance of a lifetime in The Master, which I hate to admit... I have yet to see! Thank God for Blu-Ray!

Here is a description for the book:

Part noir, part psychedelic romp... private eye Doc Sportello comes, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era as free love slips away and paranoia creeps in with the L.A. fog... It’s been awhile since Doc Sportello has seen his ex-girlfriend. Suddenly out of nowhere she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. Easy for her to say. It’s the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” except that this one usually leads to trouble. Despite which he soon finds himself drawn into a bizarre tangle of motives and passions whose cast of characters includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, a tenor sax player working undercover, an ex-con with a swastika tattoo and a fondness for Ethel Merman, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists.

Over the course of the summer, as his mother drifts further away, Duncan—with encouragement from Owen—begins to open up and come into his own.

Ron Howard Eyed For IN THE HEART OF THE SEA

So I just reported that Ron Howard's next gig after Rush is probably going to be The Graveyard Book. I spoke too soon. Warner Bros. is looking at Howard for In The Heart of the Sea. If he takes the gig, he would team back up with his Rush star Chris Hemsworth, who is attached to star as a first mate aboard the Essex, the doomed ship whose encounter with a whale inspired Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Insiders report that Howard has not yet committed.

In the Heart of the Sea has both a script and a growing cast, and this will most likely be Howard's next gig. Howard is currently assisting with post production on Rush, a biopic about Formula One driver Niki Lauda and his rivalry with English driver James Hunt (Hemsworth).

The project will probably be incredibly expensive, as Vulture points out, "the only thing riskier and more expensive than shooting a period film is shooting on the water." In the Heart of the Sea is a film that does both.

Sundance '13 Review - HELL BABY - Hilarious Horror Comedy

Hell Baby

Directors: Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon

Screenwriters: Robert Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon

Principal Cast: Rob Corddry, Leslie Bibb, Keegan Michael Key, Riki Lindhome, Paul Scheer, and Rob Huebel

Official Synopsis: Expectant couple Jack and Vanessa move into the most haunted fixer-upper in New Orleans—a house with a deadly demonic curse. When things soon spiral out of control, it’ll take the help of Vanessa’s Wiccan sister, a nosey “neighbor” who lives in their crawl space, two local detectives, and a pair of elite Vatican exorcists to save them—or is italready too late?

Revered as two of the minds behind the hilarious sketch television shows Reno 911!, The State, and Viva Variety and the screenwriters of big-budget comedies like the Night at the Museum films, comedians Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant finally unleash their codirectorial debut. Featuring a seasoned comedic ensemble, including scene stealers Leslie Bibb and Keegan Michael Key, this raucous horror spoof sics the devilish humor of its creators on the most sacred of genre conventions: the haunted house, an exorcism, and one pissy demon child.

Story and Direction:

This is the most ridiculous and hilariously fun movie that I've seen at Sundance. It's a horror film that delivers some great stupid comedy on an unexpected level. The story follow a couple with a baby on the way that moves into an old, rundown house located in the hood of Louisiana somewhere near New Orleans. The house is a legend in the neighborhood because of all the people that have died their over the years. Of course, the couple knew nothing of this when they bought it. Strange things start to happen, the wife becomes possessed, there's a hilarious character living in the basement, an insane 90 year old living corpse, a couple of cops that are suspicious of the couple, and two priests sent to the house to prevent a devil baby from being born.

You'll have to see the movie to appreciate the comedy, because there's really nothing I can say here that will do it justice. Just take my word for it when I tell you you're going to laugh your ass off! There's plenty of horror movie parody and clichés in the movie, but that stuff is all done on purpose. The movie knows what it is, and that's why it works. As far as horror comedies go, it's a hell of a lot better than those crappy Scary Movie spoof type films. This one deserves to be in theaters more than those other pieces of shit that the studios pump out.

The film is loaded with tons of blood, violence, gore, profanity and an interesting nude filled shower scene with the husband and his wife's sister. It's sure to get your attention and hold it for as long as you dwell on it. From beginning to end  the movie had me busting up laughing. There are so many great unexpected scenes that play out, and it all leads up to a crazy over the top climax that explodes into awesome bloody mess.

The movie was directed by the guys that brought us Reno 911, and I had an incredibly fun time watching this film. I think you'll have a blast watching it.

Performances:

For those of you who enjoy comedic performances, you're going to enjoy the hilarity that the actors bring to the table in this film. It was packed full of truly funny performances with great comedic timing. I think my favorite character in the film was from Keegan Michael Key, he stole every scene that he was in, but like I said everyone is great in the movie.

Similar To:

As far as horror comedies go, Hell Baby is comparable to movies like Tucker and Dale, and if you enjoy any of the films Broker Lizard has made, you should enjoy this one as well, as it's better and funnier than those Broken Lizard movies.

Chances You'll See It in Theaters:

I truly hope this movie gets a wide release date. I think it has the star power, but it will most likely end up getting a limited theatrical and VOD release.

Yahoo has the brand new trailer for the upcoming romantic thriller Upside Down, and it actually looks pretty freaking cool. The cinematography is stunning, and the concept seems to be executed pretty well from the look of things so far. Take a look at the trailer below:

Some of those shots are breathtaking, and I really dig the metallic blues in the color palette. I'm not a Kirsten Dunst fan, but I dig Jim Sturgess, so even if the performances cancel each other out, it still appears that we're in for a visual spectacle.

Upside Down hits theaters on March 15th, 2013.

Sundance '13 Review: MAGIC MAGIC - Juno Temple Goes Insane

$

Magic Magic

Director: Sebastián Silva

Screenwriter: Sebastián Silva

Principal Cast: Michael Cera, Juno Temple, Emily Browning, Catalina Sandino and Agustín Silva

Official Synopsis: If Alicia could just get some sleep, everything would be all right. As she and her cousin Sarah make their way through rural Chile with Sarah’s boyfriend, his sister, and their strange American friend Brink, Alicia’s insomnia slowly takes control. The difference between what is happening in reality and what is happening in her own mind becomes less and less clear to her. After she takes a stab at hypnosis to help solve the problem, things only get worse. As her waking nightmare continues, will her “friends” be her salvation or her downfall?

Story and Direction:

I had no idea how intensely insane this movie was going to be. I heard mixed things about it before seeing it myself, so my expectations were low. That being said, I thought it was a solidly good film. It wasn't really mind blowing, but it was definitely nightmarishly trippy. The synopsis for Sundance explains that it's an "unsettling film that examines sexual repression and the fear of loss," and how the "smallest choices we make can have significant and insurmountable consequences."

The story centers on a young girl who takes a trip to Chile to spend time with her cousin. She ends up going on a little road trip with her cousin and her friends to a cabin. From there the film follows the poor girls decent into madness. She just starts going insane, and as the story progresses, her insanity gets worse and worse.

It was a really fascinating movie, and it managed to grab my attention and hold it. At least I thought it was. It's not for everyone, as a lot of other people at the screening I went to didn't seem to like it. So chances are only about half of you will like it.

Performances:

One of the things I liked most about the film were the characters, and the actors that played them. It had a pretty great cast and Michael Cera played a very different role that we've never seen him do before. He played a darker character that was funny and a little mentally slow. It's hard to described his character, but it was very strange to see him in it, yet very refreshing at the same time. As for Juno Temple, this is the best performance of her career. I'm not the biggest fan of Temple because I think she's kind of annoying, but she really showed some acting skills in this. Emily Browning also has a good sized role in the film. She was good, but not as good as some of the other performances. I don't think it's her fault though, the character was just kind of boring.

Similar To:

The movie had the same kind of tone as the psychological horror thriller Session 9, only it wasn't a horror movie. It was just straight psychological insanity. It also has Black Swan kind of feel to it, only it's not as brilliant.

Chances You'll See It in Theaters:

Like most of the films that come out of Sundance, I imagine this will get a limited theatrical and VOD release. Even though I liked the movie, it's not one you have to see on the big screen. It's one of those movies to watch when you have some time to kill watching a movie.

Vin Diesel Releases Cool New RIDDICK Photo

Vin Diesel sure loves showing of his new Riddick film! He's released yet another cool photo of himself as the title character looking like a badass. I'm looking forward to watching the first trailer. I'm really excited for this movie. Everyone that's worked on the film has been epically hyping it up, and I just hope it ends up being awesome as it's been built up in my head.

The movie will be released in theaters on September 6th, 2013. It also stars Karl Urban (Star Trek), Jordi Molla (Bad Boys II), Matt Nable (Killer Elite), Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), Bokeem Woodbine (Total Recall), Dave Bautista (The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption), Conrad Pla (Immortals), Raoul Trujillo (Apocalypto), Nolan Funk (Aliens in America), and Keri Hilson.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.

ANT-MAN and DOCTOR STRANGE Will Be Part of Marvel's Phase Three

$

0

Ever since it was announced that The Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon has been hired to be a major creative force going forward in the Marvel cinematic universe, we've been looking forward to seeing what the studio plans to do next. We knew that Edgar Wright's Ant-Man would factor into the equation, but we weren't sure how it would fit in the larger picture.

Speaking with MTV, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige filled in some of the gaps:

'Ant-Man' is definitely part of Phase Three. Like 'Iron Man 3,' it's certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it's also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we're making the movie...It's very much an 'Ant-Man' origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we've seen before.

So knowing that The Avengers 2 hits theaters in May of 2015 and Ant-Man is slated for November of that same year, Ant-Man will be the first Marvel film following the hotly-anticipated sequel and will therefore officially kick off Marvel's Phase Three of movies. Cool.

So much of the stories we're telling [right now] is about the core 'Avengers' characters we've now met, and they'll be evolving in big, surprising ways, in Cap's next movie and Thor's next movie and of course in 'Iron Man 3,' as we get them all into the next 'Avengers' film. Beyond that… 'Ant-Man' is the only one officially announced, but you probably don't have to look too far to guess at the next list of characters we're toying with and beginning to develop.

Does that mean seeing our favorite goatee-wearing sorcerer in Phase Three?

'Doctor Strange,' which I've been talking about for years, is definitely one of them," he confirmed. "He's a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he's totally different from anything else we have, just like 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' He's totally different from anything we've done before, as is 'Ant-Man,' which keeps us excited.

So while a Doctor Strange movie still hasn't been officially announced by the company, we know that Feige plans to include it in Phase Three, which is good news for fans who have been teased for years about seeing a live-action version of the character come to life. We'll obviously be keeping a close eye on this, so stay tuned for further updates.

Sundance '13 Review: ASS BACKWARDS

Director: Chris Nelson

Screenwriters: June Diane Raphael, Casey Wilson

Cast: June Diane Raphael, Casey Wilson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Alicia Silverstone, Jon Cryer, Brian Geraghty

Official Synopsis: Kate and Chloe have been best friends since childhood, when they both tied for dead last in their hometown beauty pageant. Now they are all grown up and living in New York City, where Chloe works as a “girl in a box” at a nightclub and Kate is a CEO…of her own one-woman egg-donor “corporation.” Their past humiliation remains long forgotten until they receive an invitation to the pageant’s milestone anniversary celebration. The unpleasant memories come flooding back, but Kate and Chloe decide to redeem themselves by winning the elusive crown.

Similar To

Think Romy and Michele's High School Reunion meets Dumb & Dumber

Story and Direction

Bride Wars scribes/stars, June Diane Raphael and Casey Wilson, write themselves into lead roles this time around for the raunchy, raucous, road trip comedy Ass Backwards. Like Harry and Lloyd, Kate and Chloe's combined cluelessness leads them on amazing misadventures. But the characters in Dumb & Dumber had a more endearing quality to them that the girls in Ass Backwards lack. Kate and Chloe's misperception of reality and their unflinching support of each other is more due to their enabled egos rather than from their innocence or ignorance. This makes them hard to like sometimes. Even though I didn't absolutely love the characters, there are so many absurd scenes that you just can't help but laugh at, and  director Chris Nelson takes a couple of risky ideas that actually pay off really well. Overall it's a solid comedy, and yet another movie that shows that Women are just as capable as men at bringing down the house with laughter.

Performances

Raphael and Wilson have really built up great chemistry. Raphael feels like the more seasoned actress out of the comic duo, as she has had a wider variety of roles under her belt. I'd love to see her in more starring roles, and this should hopefully serve as the launching pad for that.

As funny as Wilson is, she has a tendency to oversell things a bit on camera, as if she's doing improv theater or stand up. Even when she was on SNL I always found her a bit distracting. But she's definitely getting better, and this is a great role for her, and you can tell she had a lot of fun with it.

Alicia Silverstone is given a small but fun role, and there are a couple of other solid performances from the likes of Vincent D’Onofrio and True Blood's Brian Geraghty

Chances You'll See It in Theaters

This may be a little too raunchy for some of the female audience, and Raphael and Wilson aren't the most recognizable faces to male audiences just yet. But this looks and feels enough like a mainstream comedy that there's a good chance it could go wide.

WETA Wanted for LEGEND OF CONAN Special Effects

$

0

I think one of my most anticipated movies in the next few years is Legend of Conan, in which Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to reprise the role that made him a movie star. The actor is incredibly excited about the film and is up for the physicality of it even though he's 65 years old. In a recent interview via TheArnoldFans.com, Schwarzenegger and producer Fredrik Malmberg talk about the film, revealing that they want Peter Jackson's WETA workshop to provide the special effects.

As you know right now, we’re concentrating on the story and the script, and then we’ll go out and find the right director who has the same passion as the rest of us in the group. And you always have to let the creative side and let the director put his stamp and mark on it so you never know what’s going to happen with the production design. I mean, we’re trying to get the TOP production people involved. We’re talking all the time about who we’d see doing the production, and our dream would be to have the WETA Workshop guys, the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit guys. They are huge Conan fans and they would be great to be involved on the creative side.

I'm sure WETA will do an incredible job with it if everything goes as planned. Schwarzenegger went on to talk about staying in shape and prepping to play Conan again. Basically, age doesn't mean anything to him, and he's ready to wield his giant sword!

Well, age doesn’t mean anything to me, because I work out every day. I work out twice a day, as a matter of fact. At night I work out with weights, and in the morning I do cardiovascular training. So for me, to get on the set and to swing the sword around again and to ride the horses and all those things doesn’t mean anything [does not scare me], because I feel like I did thirty years ago. So as long as I stay in shape, that’s the key thing, and to keep your body young. Even though you do feel the pain when you wipe out and when you do your fight scenes and you get more sore and the body doesn’t come back as quickly and all this . . . but just grind through it, you know? That’s what it’s all about!

The film will be a direct sequel to 1984's Conan the Barbarian and will skip over the events of the other films, Conan the Destroyer and the craptastic recent reboot. Universal looking to release the movie in 2014, and here's how it's previously been described:

I want the warrior whose joints have started to fuse together, who has to crack the cartilage so he can pick up a sword again. I want the guy who’s not necessarily lost a step, but there’s some rust he has to shake off. I want to embrace that. It makes it a greater hero story.

Conan needs to be faced with challenges. The greatest challenge to him isn’t the armies that are set before him. It’s, on some level, self-doubt, a little bit of slowing down and forcing yourself to be heroic beyond what people expect of you. What I don’t want is for him to step back in and look the same. That would defeat the purpose of our story.

That's so damn awesome!

Chloe Grace Moretz Gets Musical in New Film IF I STAY

$

0

Chloe Grace Moretz is about to have blood dumped on her in the remake of Carrie and return to the role of Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass 2, but now it looks like the 15-year-old might be changing her tune a little bit.

Variety reports that Moretz will star in If I Stay, a new movie from Summit Entertainment that has R.J. Cutler lined up to direct. Cutler, who has a documentary called The World According to Dick Cheney playing here at Sundance 2013, will be making his feature directorial debut on this movie.

If I Stay is based on Gayle Forman's 2009 novel of the same name, and here's where things get a little strange: Variety's report pegs the movie as a "supernatural music pic" that revolves around a female classical music player and her indie-rocker boyfriend, but the official synopsis of the book from Amazon paints a different picture.

In the blink of an eye everything changes. Seventeen year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall what happened afterwards, watching her own damaged body being taken from the wreck. Little by little she struggles to put together the pieces- to figure out what she has lost, what she has left, and the very difficult choice she must make. Heartwrenchingly beautiful, this will change the way you look at life, love, and family. Mia's story will stay with you for a long, long time.

I'm not quite sure who to believe here, but I think the supernatural music movie sounds a bit more interesting than the amnesia flick. Perhaps they're one and the same, but you'd assume Variety's report would at least include a veiled reference to the fact that there's an accident as a major part of the plot, so until we find out more, it looks like we're in the dark on this one. Moretz is a super talented young actress - I can't believe she's still only 15 - and she's been good despite starring in some clunkers over the past couple of years (Dark Shadows, I'm lookin' at you).

As always, sound off in the comments with your thoughts.
