Sundance '13 Review: SIGHTSEERS - Dementedly Twisted Love Story

$

Sightseers

Director: Ben Wheatley

Screenwriters: Alice Lowe and Steve Oram

Cast: Alice Lowe and Steve Oram

Synopsis: Chris wants to finally show sheltered Tina the world, and he wants to do it his way—on a journey through the British Isles in his beloved Abbey Oxford Caravan, visiting such illustrious sites as the National Tramway Museum, the Ribblehead Viaduct, the Cumberland Pencil Museum, and the rolling countryside in between. But it doesn’t take long for the dream to fade. Litterbugs, noisy teenagers, and prebooked caravan sites soon conspire to shatter Chris’s dreams and send him, and anyone who rubs him the wrong way, over a very jagged edge.

Performances:

Lowe and Oram were freakin' awesome in this movie! I loved how they portrayed these dry, awkward, and humorously twisted characters! It were so fun to watch these likeable and polite characters be pushed to the edge of self-control and their descent into comedic madness.

Story and Direction:

If you haven't seen Wheatley's Kill List yet, you should watch it now. Especially if you like disturbing films. Sightseers is nothing like that movie, but it will give you a sense of hat kind of crazy movies that the director makes. Having seen Kill List, I was incredibly excited to see this movie up at the festival, it was on my must watch list coming up to Sundance, and it didn't disappoint! This was such a great film. It was such a perfect mix of comedy and insanity. It's my favorite film at the festival that I've seen so far.

The film is an incredibly twisted and pitch black love story that follows two plain middle-aged lovers named Chris and Tina on a cross-country killing spree of death. What starts out as a carefully planned roadtrip to see some popular tourist attractions around England, turns into a bloody nightmare for other tourists. After the main character, Chris, accidentally backs their caravan over an annoying litterbug that was ruining his enjoyment of a heritage tour, their trip gets even more interesting. He starts to kill other people that he finds offensive on their trip. In the beginning Tina believes it must be an accident, but as the body count grows, and other things are revealed, she ends up developing a taste for killing as well. She actually becomes overly enthusiastic about it. Turns out their different views of homicide put a strain on their relationship.

Wheatley a awesome job bringing this story to life. For those of you not familiar with Wheatley's work, this s going to completely catch you off guard. What starts out as a typical laugh-out-loud dark comedy with fun sarcastic humor, turns into a brutally murderous film. It still manages to keep that hilarious edge though! It all leads up to a fantastic ending that I thought was great.

One other thing I want to point out is the cinematography... it was absolutley beautiful.

Similar To:

I guess the movie can compare this to films like Bonnie and Clyde and Natural Born Killers, because of it's cross country killing spree. Only this one is a hell of a lot more funny and entertaining. The characters were also much more interesting to watch.

Chances That You'll See It In Theaters:

It doesn't look like there's a release date set of the U.S. yet, but it will eventually get one, and I'm sure it will be a limited release. If it opens up in an area near you, you've got to check it out!

Here's a wonderful animated short film called Cadaver, which follows a cadaver who "wakes up to say a last goodbye to his wife but discovers a truth in death he didn't know in life." He goes on a little road trip with a couple of girls that work in the morgue. The short was directed by , and has a great voice cast that includes Christopher Lloyd, Tavi Gevinson, and Kathy Bates. I really enjoyed watching this film, and I hope you do too!

Sundance '13 Review: VALENTINE ROAD Effectively Examines A School Shooting

Valentine Road

Director: Marta Cunningham

Writer: Marta Cunningham

Official Synopsis: On February 12, 2008, in Oxnard, California, eighth-grade student Brandon McInerney shot his classmate Larry King twice in the back of the head during first period. When Larry died two days later, his murder shocked the nation. Was this a hate crime, one perpetrated by a budding neo-Nazi whose masculinity was threatened by an effeminate gay kid who may have had a crush on him? Or was there even more to it?

When a transgendered 15-year-old boy named Larry is shot twice in the back of the head in front of his entire class, the murderer, Brandon McInerney, is quickly caught and put in jail. As the town of Oxnard reels from the loss, Brandon's fate hangs in the balance while massive media attention and sneaky lawyer tactics cause the trial to stretch out for years. Similar to last year's exhaustive documentary West of Memphis (about the West Memphis 3), this movie explores the backgrounds of the involved parties and provides context about why the murder occurred. But there's an important distinction between the two docs: the West Memphis 3 were innocent, while Brandon McInernery admitted pulling the trigger at point blank range.

Even after Brandon's confession and some damning evidence of him being a white supremacist, the jury still couldn't come to an agreement about the true nature of the crime. Was Brandon being bullied by Larry? Reports state that Larry, a flamboyant kid who wore makeup and high heels to school and was open about his sexuality, interrupted a basketball game Brandon was playing with his friends and asked him to be his Valentine, leaving Brandon embarrassed and humiliated. Interviews with members of the jury prove to be the second most horrifying element of the film (just behind the crime itself), as these people somehow defend Brandon's choice to shoot Larry (one woman claims Brandon was simply "solving a problem"). Moments like this make the subject matter in Valentine Road infuritating and highlight the fact that prejudice is as alive as ever, while some may find it easier to justify than others.

The film raises critiques of how the junior high school handled the aftermath of the shooting (not giving kids who witnessed the shooting proper counseling, looking down on a teacher for supporting Larry's decision to be proud of who he was, etc), as well as touching on issues like gun control, trying children as adults, and debating how much is "too much" when it comes to self-expression. Through interviews with both Brandon and Larry's friends, the doc tries to give us some insight into who they are (or were), and while this isn't the best documentary I've ever seen, it does a good job of examining the effect of the shooting on the community of this small California town.

With the events of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut fresh in viewers' minds, Valentine Road uses this specific case as a way to question not only how something like this could have happened and how we prevent future incidents, but at times questions the effectiveness of our entire justice system. It's also a modern-day horror film about the rampant intolerance in our culture. Regardless of your particular stances on any of the subjects raised, there is no way that any sane person can argue in favor of Brandon's actions, and while we get to see a montage of Brandon graduating from high school in jail, he took away Larry's chance to do the same and, thanks to the good ol' U.S. justice system, Brandon will be able to spend the latter years of his life free in the world while Larry lives on only in the memories of his friends, classmates, and residents of Oxnard, California. Valentine Road will move you, but it will also make you more cynical about the way the law works - and that might be the larger point the filmmakers were going for.

END OF WATCH Blu-ray Review

$

End of Watch arrives on Blu-ray this Tuesday, thanks to Universal Home Entertainment. David Ayer wrote and directed one of the most realistic police dramas that I have seen. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, Frank Grillo, and Natalie Martinez. Watching it again on Blu-ray has reminded me of how powerful the performances are. Those, coupled with the fantastic script and tight action sequences, make End of Watch a great addition to your Blu-ray collection.

The film follows two young officers Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Pena) during their daily patrols of South Central, one of the most crime populated sections of Los Angeles. Taylor and Zavala are both gung-ho young officers who go above and beyond the call of duty and use their knowledge of the streets to do some low level detective work. This pays off for their professional career, but gains the attention from a drug cartel after they interrupt the cartel's trafficking with their police work. As a result, Taylor and Zevala are marked for death.

Ayer uses cameras from multiple locations, which has become more and more popular on screen. Recently Chronicle used a mix of handheld video camera as well as cell phones from characters in the film to bring the film together. End of Watch employs the same concept with Taylor shooting a lot of it from his handheld camera, however most of the film is shot from cameras placed inside and outside of their police cruiser. As a result, the camera movements are very shaky and the shots are extremely close on the characters. If you get motion sickness easily, End of Watch may cause you issues. I personally enjoyed this style of filming, but many may not find it appealing.

Every member of the cast turned in a fantastic performance, especially Gyllenhaal and Pena. Their connection on screen as partners is highly believable. The dialogue between the two of them when they are on patrol is very funny. I liked Anna Kendrick as Taylor's girlfriend, who turns into his wife. It's cool to see the progression of their relationship during the film. Natalie Martinez is equally good as Zavala's wife. Grillo and Ferrera both turn in solid supporting performances as well.

The sound and picture quality on this Blu-ray is solid. I liked seeing the film in theaters, but watching it in my home theater was equally enjoyable. One of the big issues with the sound quality is the background noises picked up by the cameras used for filming. This can either be viewed as distracting or adding to the tone of the film. The same is true for the 1080p video, as there are moments when the colors are impacted by the use of the natural lighting.

Special Features:

  • Audio Commentary: Writer/director David Ayer takes us through scene-by-scene Writer/director and gives us insight into how realistic the film is, as well as the switches between the police and the cartel.
  • Deleted Scenes: There are a total of 18 deleted scenes and alternate takes that make this segment worth watching.
  • Featurettes: These are your obligatory featurette collection with the same old cast and crew interviews you get with each film.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD Plot Details Reveal Mild Spoilers

I loved Thor, and am looking forward to Thor: The Dark World. Are you curious how Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Malekith the Accursed (Christopher Eccleston) will be featured in the story for Alan Taylor's highly anticipated sequel? Thanks to a Total Film interview with Eccleston, we have some details.

Beware the interview contains some mild spoilers.

Eccleston describes Malekith as a "bad guy with no redeeming qualities." He goes on to reveal that Malekith "plans to take over the universe-egged on by Hiddleston's mischievous Loki." He adds that good scripts are his main deciding point when choosing a role, which speaks highly of Taylor's script. The interview not only brings up some great points, but also raises an equal amount of questions.

I for one am excited to see how the film turns out when it arrives in theaters on November 8. Share your thoughts on this news in the rant back section below!

Sundance '13 Review: S-VHS Is More Awesome Than the First One!

$

S-VHS

Directors: Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Edúardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Timo Tjahjanto, Gareth Huw Evans, and Jason Eisener

Screenwriters: Simon Barrett, Jamie Nash, Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Huw Evans, John Davies and Jason Eisener

Cast: Adam Wingard, Lawrence Levine, L. C. Holt, Kelsy Abbott, Hannah Hughes

Official Synopsis: Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static—white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than just magnetic tape. They are imprinted with the very soul of evil.

From the demented minds that brought you last year’s V/H/S comes S-VHS, an all-new anthology of dread, madness, and gore. This follow-up ventures even further down the demented path blazed by its predecessor, discovering new and terrifying territory in the genre. This is modern horror at its most inventive, shrewdly subverting our expectations about viral videos in ways that are just as satisfying as they are sadistic. The result is the rarest of all tapes—a second generation with no loss of quality.

Story and Direction:

This ended being a hell of an entertaining horror anthology! It's a sequel to last year's Sundance hit V/H/S, which I loved! But, this sequel was a lot more awesome than the first! The stories were scarier, more brutal, had better production value, and were even more entertaining. This is a must watch film for any horror movie enthusiast, and if you're not, it's a great time to become one!

There were four short films in this one, and they're part of a bigger story of a universe in which supernatural events are caught on tape, and there are people out there that collect these tapes. The story is set up with a private investigator and his assistant looking for a young man who disappeared. They end up going to his house to look for clues, and as you might expect, there are a ton of VHS tapes laying around, so of course they need to be watched. Here's a brief breakdown of each short film:

The first segment is called “Clinical Trials” and was directed by Adam Wingard. It starts out with a guy who gets an eye transplant, receiving an experimental bionic eye with a recorder built in so that the doctors can monitor it for glitches. The new eye also comes complete with the ability to be able to see ghosts. This was a great start to an awesome film.

The second film is called “A Ride in the Park” and was directed by Edúardo Sanchez. It features a guy going mountain biking with a camera attached to his bike and helmet. After telling his wife he loves her, he sets out on a mountain biking adventure that leads him straight into zombie territory. While riding his bike, a screaming woman comes running out of the woods bleeding. He tries to help the woman but in the process he gets bitten by her after she becomes a zombie. Because of the biker's helmet cam, we get an interesting and different point of view of him becoming a zombie and attacking people. You've never seen a zombie film like this before, and it was very enjoyable. The short is both very funny and incredibly bloody and violent.

The third segment is called “Safe Haven” and was directed by Gareth Huw Evans (The Raid) and Timo Tjahjanto. The story follows a group of reporters who interview a cult leader in Indonesia. They go to the cult compound to try to find out the truth of what goes on there, but nothing can prepare them for the insanity that awaits. Things look sketchy when they first enter, but during the interview process a bell chimes and the cult leader starts to instigate a mass suicide, and at this point all hell breaks loose, and some really crazy shit starts to happen, the craziest of which I won't mention now. I don't want to ruin it for you, but it gets insanely crazy and violent. I would have loved to see this one as a feature length film. I love how this film escalates into complete and utter madness!

The fourth and final segment is called "Alien Abduction Slumber Party" and it was directed by Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun). This one follows a group of young teens friends spending the night together at a friends house unsupervised. What starts out as a funny night of pranks and hijinks turns into an insanely intense and violent alien invasion, and the aliens have come down for one purpose... to abduct this group of kids. This was an awesome segment that audiences are sure to love.

Performances:

The movie is full of actors that you most likely have never heard of before, and there are mixed performances from everyone. Some are good, others not so good, but in the end all of the sequences ended up being really entertaining regardless of the acting.

Similar To:

I'd like to think of these things happening in the world of The X-Files. I could easily see Mulder and Scully trying to solve these supernatural mysteries. Maybe the next X-Files movie should be an extension of VHS.

Chances That You'll See It In Theaters:

The first VHS film ended up doing pretty well, and I think the sequel will end up getting a bigger theatrical release. It definitely deserves it. I think a lot of people are going to enjoy this one. Even if you didn't like the first movie, you'll probably like this one.

Sundance '13 Review: Park Chan-Wook's STOKER was Amazing!

Stoker - "Personally speaking, I can't wait to watch life tear you apart."

Director: Park Chan-Wook

Screenwriter: Wentworth Miller

Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, Dermot Mulroney, Jacki Weaver, and Nicole Kidman

Official Synopsis: After India’s father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie, whom she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother, Evelyn. Soon after his arrival, India begins to suspect this mysterious, charming man has disturbing ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, the friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Story and Direction:

This was at the top of my list of movies to see at Sundance, and it was freakin' incredible! Stoker has jumped up to the top of my list of films I've seen here so far, and even though it's possible something will knock it down a peg, I don't see it happening. This is also easily one of the best films I've seen of 2013 as well.

I'm a huge fan of Park Chan-wook's twisted films, and anyone that's seen his previous films knows what they are going to get. I thought it was great listening to audience members talk about the film before and during the film because the majority of them had no idea what they were getting themselves into. So when the story started to play out on the big screen a lot of people were shocked by what they saw.

The film was beautifully jacked up. I've always loved the Park's direction, but I think this is could be his best film production to date. It's his first English language movie, and he nailed it! His direction in this movie is brilliantly mesmerizing! I was sucked right into the story the moment that the movie started, and it never let me go. Hell, I wanted to see the story continue after it was over! The script was fantastic, and the cinematography was incredible. I loved how most of the storytelling was done through visuals.

This is a true Park film, with that incredible intensity that we love in his films. I have no doubt that fans are going to love Stoker, and I can't wait to see it again.

Performances:

The characters in the film were written so well, and all the actors that played them were at the top of their game. The chemistry between them was also pretty amazing. I'm not really a big fan of Nicole Kidman, but she gave a great performance in the movie. Matthew Goode ended up giving the best performance of his career, as did Mia Wasakwoska. In fact, She was amazing, and her performance was flawlessly haunting. She blew me away, and it's definitely the best performance from an actor I've seen at Sundance so far. I honestly hope people remember her performance for the Oscars nest year.

Similar To:

The film has the same kind of tone, vibe, and pacing as The Talented Mr. Ripley, only it's a better film, and much darker. There's really no other film I can think of comparing it to. This movie really kind of stands on its own... damn it was good.

Chances That You'll See It In Theaters:

You'll get to watch this film in theaters soon, as it already has a release date of March 1st, 2013, and I highly recommend checking this one out!

"I play Doll, she's a Nordic Bounty Hunter and she's after Riddick," said the actress about her role. While she couldn't confirm whether she has any fight scenes with Riddick (probably means that's a yes) she does state that, "She does have 'quite' a bit of running around to do in the film.

Joey Paur, Elijah Reyes, Ben Pearson, and Free Reyes review The Spectacular Now.

Make sure to check out Joey's written review.

Director: James Ponsoldt

Screenwriters: Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber, based on the novel by Tim Tharp

Stars: Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, MaryElizabeth Winstead, Kyle Chandler

Synopsis: Sutter Keely lives in the now. It’s a good place for him. A high school senior, charming and self-possessed, he’s the life of the party, loves his job at a men’s clothing store, and has no plans for the future. A budding alcoholic, he’s never far from his supersized, whisky-fortified 7UP cup. But after being dumped by his girlfriend, Sutter gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finicky hovering over him. Not a member of the cool crowd, she’s different: the “nice girl” who reads science fiction and doesn’t have a boyfriend. She does have dreams, while Sutter lives in a world of impressive self-delusion. And yet they’re drawn to each other.

Adapted from Tim Tharp’s novel, The Spectacular Now captures the insecurity and confusion of adolescence without looking for tidy truths. Young actors rarely portray teens with the maturity that Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley display, and they are phenomenal together. Funny, compassionate, and poignant, James Ponsoldt’s third feature again demonstrates his ability to lay bare the souls of his characters.

Sundance '13 Review: BREATHE IN Is Compelling But Familiar

Breathe In

Director: Drake Doremus

Screenwriters: Drake Doremus, Ben York Jones

Cast: Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Amy Ryan, Mackenzie Davis

Official Synopsis: As summer turns to fall, music teacher Keith Reynolds privately reminisces about his days as a starving artist in the city. While his wife, Megan, and daughter, Lauren, look forward to Lauren’s final year of high school, Keith clings to those evenings he’s asked to sub as a cellist with a prestigious Manhattan symphony. When Megan decides the family should host foreign exchange student Sophie, the British high school senior soon rekindles an impetuous aspect of Keith’s personality.

Performances

Felicity Jones burst onto the scene with Doremus' previous film, Like Crazy, and it's clear that the two have a great working relationship because she gives another solid performance here. While she isn't allowed to be the firecracker of emotion that her Crazy character was (this character doesn't have that personality), it was nice to see that Jones can deliver in a role that is quieter and more reserved. She lets her fingers do a lot of the talking, showing off her piano skills in a terrific sequence that makes her look like a female Eddie Van Halen of the ivories. Guy Pearce does some of his best dramatic work in years as Keith, the family patriarch who finds Jones' character - the new British exchange student living with his family - a creative and romantic inspiration. It's hard to sympathize with him because his character is sort of an ass, and I'm not saying his behavior is justifiable, but the way his wife (the always-stellar Amy Ryan) constantly trivializes his passion for playing music makes it at least easy to see where he's coming from. Mackenzie Davis does a good job as the daughter of the family who is initially welcoming of Jones' character but ultimately discovers her secret.

Story and Direction

We've seen the story of a man experiencing a midlife crisis and attempting to recapture his youth (or gain inspiration) by hooking up with a much younger woman so many times on screen that it's become a cliche. But even in this familiar genre, Doremus keeps things interesting and adds his own style to the proceedings. A Manhattan dance club sequence was a blast of energy into a film mostly comprised of longing looks and quiet smiles, and he and co-writer Ben York Jones know how to stretch the sexual tension to its absolute breaking point. There are some spellbinding moments accompanied by a terrific classical music score (mostly piano and cello), but as much as I was hooked into the story and characterizations the whole time, the movie falls into incredibly predictable territory in its third act. When the film loses its luster, it becomes just a conventional forbidden love story, but strong work from the cast and director make this one worth seeing despite these flaws.

Similiar To

It's like the Jason Bateman segments of Juno stretched out into a whole movie.

Chances You'll See It In Theaters

As with Like Crazy, it could take a while for this one to finally make it to theaters, but I think you'll get a chance to check it out if you're interested.

Vin Diesel is sure having a fun giving his fans fun little teases of his upcoming sci-fi film Riddick. He's released yet another image of himself as the title character walking around on a dark rainy night. I can't wait to finally be able to see a trailer for this movie! I'm really hoping that it's going to meet our expectations.

The movie will be released in theaters on September 6th, 2013. It also stars Karl Urban (Star Trek), Jordi Molla (Bad Boys II), Matt Nable (Killer Elite), Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), Bokeem Woodbine (Total Recall), Dave Bautista (The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption), Conrad Pla (Immortals), Raoul Trujillo (Apocalypto), Nolan Funk (Aliens in America), and Keri Hilson.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.
