How Long Until We See The First Feature Length Film Shot In Space?

$

Video game developer and filmmaker and Richard Garriott made news recently as becoming the first director to shoot a short film in outer space. While filming his documentary (Man On A Mission) Garriott had time to record a short sci-fi film he titled Apogee of FearWhile I'm not so worried about seeing a film featuring the amateur acting stylings of two astronauts, it does send my head reeling as to whether Hollywood will ever be able to film a science fiction movie in the most realistic set imaginable, space. Easier said than done? You bet your geek a** it is, but it is possible even in today's age so long as you consider a few things.

To film his documentary, Garriot had to front $30 million out of his own pocket just to make it up there. The average film costs (according to 2006 numbers from film studios) about $65 million, so let that be our model. Send one person up to space and boom, your budget is halved. Of course, the cost travels higher the more people that get involved so it's safe to say that a movie filmed entirely in space would most likely have only one actor in orbit. Considering this, Hollywood would want to go with an A-lister who has a lot of pull to help them raise the rising cost of this production.

The average A-lister works for about $5 million a movie which now brings us down to $30 million left. The perfect first actor to be in space? It would have to be someone with a high psychological tolerance who could handle the many physical challenges of space...I'm sure you already know who I'm going to say.

Christian Bale is my A-list candidate as he is no stranger to radical body transformations. Out of all big name celebrities he seems most adept at handling the many trials presented in space travel which include but are not limited too...

  • nasal congestion
  • nausea
  • back ache
  • abdominal pain
  • insomnia
  • bone deterioration
  • kidney stones
  • redistribution of blood flow in lungs

You get the picture. In addition to that, spending a long time in space (it takes 8 months to 1 year to film a Hollywood production) can lead to depression, a breakdown of motor skills upon returning to earth, and many other nasty things, most of which occur in the first three days of being in orbit.

Realistically then, we can't just send him up in a shuttle and hope for the best. Best bet would be to put him in the International Space Station and let movie magic give the illusion he's alone. It also might be best to get it done in anywhere closer to a month, as to not cause too many complications and further expenditures.

Oops, forgot about the director. There goes our remaining $30 million. There's a very short list of directors who look young and fit enough to stand up to the harsh conditions of space. On top of that you're likely going to be flying solo as more crew members will only increase the cost so you need a guy who has plenty of experience shooting on his own for cheap.

If you have to shoot a movie for cheap with limited resources, you can't beat the cinematography and chops of Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) or James Wan (Saw, Insidious). Not only were these guys both able to create awesome films on a low budget, but they also are young and more fit to handle the trails of space than say (no offense) Peter Jackson or George Lucas.

"The first directors in space?"

I have faith in either one to make an awesome movie, and while I would be more apt to lean towards Jones because of the overall suspenseful masterpiece that was Moon, if it were some kind of "space madness" scenario I would be curious as to what Wan would do with the project.

So you take one director, one actor, zero crew members, and a story. Get it done fast, and spend maybe a couple months in post production on Earth? Certainly possible given the right director/actor combination and a little help filming scenes outside the ship with trained space professionals. Considering the immense hype that would surround the first movie shot entirely in space? I say it's worth the cost.

Earlier today we posted a new poster and behind the scenes video for Timur Bekmambetov's adaptation of Abraham LincolnVampire Hunter. We now have two more images from the film to share with all of you. Hopefully we get to see a trailer soon!

The movie stars Benjamin Walker as Abe Lincoln, and the story focuses on the president who, after having his mother murdered by the monsters, is on a quest to rid the world of the evil vampires. The cast also includes Anthony MackieJimmi Simpson, and Mary Elisabeth Winstead.

Here's the Synopsis:

Abraham LincolnVampire Hunter is a re-imagining of the 16th President's life that depicts him as an axe-throwing, highly accomplished killer of vampires -- an obsession of his since those bloodsuckers supposedly took the life of his mother. Lincoln eventually learns that the vampires have fled to the southern states of the U.S. and are concocting a plan to conquer and enslave the entire country -- this in turn leads to the Civil War between the Union and the Confederacy, the latter of which the vampires are aligned with.

The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 22th, 2012.

SHERLOCK Gets a Third Season!

The incredibly awesome BBC series Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, has been renewed for the third season! I loved the first season, and I'm looking forward to seeing season 2, which just concluded on BBC, and is set to air on PBS this spring. I'm excited to see this story continue.

Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat confirmed the show's renewal via his Twitter on Sunday night when he said, "Of course there's going to be a third series -- it was commissioned at the same time as the second."

As of right now there's no start date for the third season production, but the the show is expected to begin airing again next year. This may very well be the last season for the fact that both Cumberbatch and Freeman's film careers are starting to blow up.

Insanely Bad HULK Rip-off Film

Here's a trailer for a film called The Amazing Bulk, which is a hilariously bad rip-off of Marvel's The Incredible Hulk. This is easily one of the most epically cheap movies ever made. I wish I could say at least they tried, but good hell, this is just beyond terrible. I have no idea what the motivation was behind this, and why any of these people would waste their time on making it. It was created by Tomcat Films, the footage you are about to watch my offend you.

Here's the Synopsis:

Henry "Hank" Howard, an ambitious young scientist, struggles to develop a superhuman serum designed to improve muscle mass and prolong life expectancy. His boss, the grumpy General Darwin, will not allow Hank to marry his daughter, Hannah, until the experiment is a success. Against Darwin's wishes Hank proposes to Hannah anyway, but his life is shattered by a mugger who steals his engagement ring. Dejected, Hank injects himself with the experimental serum and is transformed into the Amazing Bulk.

The Bulk goes on a rampage through the city, destroying everything in his path. Hank is caught by a relentless detective, imprisoned by Darwin, and forced to battle the sadistic Dr. Kantlove, who threatens to blow up the moon with his arsenal of weapons.

HUNGER GAMES Sequel CATCHING FIRE Secures Director and Writer

Lionsgate's The Hunger Games hasn't even been released yet, but they are expecting it will be a huge hit. Why wouldn't it be? It's one of the most anticipated films of 2012. The studio has hired screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) to write the script for the sequel, Catching Fire, to be directed by Gary Ross, who is currently directing the first film.

The Hunger Games comes out on March 23rd, 2012, and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, and Liam Hemsworth all of whom are expected to return to reprise their roles in Catching Fire, which is set to be released in theaters on November 22nd, 2013.

I hope the first one ends up living up to the expectations of the fans, but you should be happy to know that they have a good team assembled for the sequel.

Here's the description of the book, which contains SPOILERS if you didn't read the first one

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

Here's the trailer to a hilariously awesome looking movie called FDR: American Badass!, which tells the story of Franklin Roosevelt going to battle against werewolves. This is such a ridiculously great idea that I have to see it. The film stars Barry Bostwick, Lin Shaye, and Bruce McGill.

The story "follows Franklin D. Roosevelt (Bostwick) as a badass werewolf hunter tracking down the likes of Adolf Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito in his customized wheelchair of death. This isn't the FDR you know, this guy's got lip, and will punch you in yours."

Watch Original JOHN CARTER Test Footage from Kerry Conran

John Carter probably holds the record for the film with the longest time in development hell (that is, studios try to put a film together and it collapses). Since 1931, many filmmakers--including "Looney Tunes" director Bob Clampett, famed stop motion animator Ray Harryhausen, Terminator producer Mario Kassar and Die Hard director John McTiernan, Desperado director Robert Rodriguez, and Iron Man director Jon Favreau--have taken a shot at developing a screen version of Edgar Rice Burroughs' character and his adventures on Mars. 81 years later, two-time Oscar winner Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall*E) makes his live-action debut with John Carter.

But while the film was still in the hands of Paramount Pictures (after Rodriguez had left the project), they gave it to Kerry Conran, famous for his epic period adventure, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. He was given the opportunity to make a test reel, adhering to the aesthetics seen in Sky Captain to bring John Carter to life. Paramount let the rights lapse, and Walt Disney Pictures bought the rights exclusively for Andrew Stanton.

You can watch Conran's test footage here:

It certainly is interesting, but I still hold out hope for John Carter and wish all the best for Andrew Stanton.

Trailer for DETACHMENT Starring Adrien Brody

$

The trailer for Tony Kaye's Detachment has arrived online thanks to Tribeca Films. This is the first film that Kaye has directed since American History X. The ensemble cast includes Academy Award-winner Adrien Brody, Marcia Gay Harden, Christina Hendricks, William Petersen, Bryan Cranston, Tim Blake Nelson, Lucy Liu, Blythe Danner, and James Caan.

Official Synopsis:

Director Tony Kaye's (AMERICAN HISTORY X) long-awaited film DETACHMENT stars Academy Award(R) winner Adrien Brody as Henry Barthes, a substitute teacher who conveniently avoids any emotional connections by never staying anywhere long enough to form a bond with either his students or colleagues. A lost soul grappling with a troubled past, Henry finds himself at a public school where an apathetic student body has created a frustrated, burned-out administration.

In finding an emotional connection to the students but also to fellow teachers and a runaway teen, he finds that he's not alone in a life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world. Kaye has molded a contemporary vision of people who become increasingly distant from others while still feeling the need to connect.

DETACHMENT features a stellar ensemble cast, including Academy Award(R) winner Marcia Gay Harden, Christina Hendricks, William Petersen, Bryan Cranston, Tim Blake Nelson, Lucy Liu, Blythe Danner, Academy Award(R) nominees James Caan, and newcomers Sami Gayle and Betty Kaye.

The film looks wonderful, and I love the cast. I am looking forward to seeing this when it arrives in theaters on March 16th. Watch the trailer below and share your thoughts.

THE LONE RANGER - Production Begins Next Month

Armie Hammer is about to ride off into the sunset as the Lone Ranger with his trusty sidekick Tonto (Johnny Depp). Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Productions will begin filming The Lone Ranger next month in New Mexico. The Governor of New Mexico made an announcement today and revealed that Gore Verbinski will finish shooting in August, so it will be one hot summer. Production will take place in the cities of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Shiprock.

The Lone Ranger is scheduled for release on May 31, 2013. It will take a lot for me to see it in theaters. I personally think that the budget is ridiculous. For the $200 + milion price tag two or three solid films could be made, which I would rather see. The trailer had better blow me completely away. Read the official press release below, and let us know if you are interested in seeing The Lone Ranger.

Here is the official press release:

January 13, 2012 SANTA FE – Governor Susana Martinez and the New Mexico Film Office announced today that Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ The Lone Ranger, directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Johnny Depp, will begin principal photography in New Mexico in February 2012, with production planned in and around Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Shiprock and other locations around the state through the middle of August 2012.

“The Lone Ranger is proof that New Mexico’s film industry is alive and well,” said Governor Martinez. “This administration is committed to fostering productive relationships with film studios so we can continue to offer our talented workforce and breathtaking backdrops for major productions. As we continue to build upon our reputation as a premier film production center, we are pleased to welcome The Lone Ranger to our state.”

State and local officials have been working with the Walt Disney Studios for over a year to bring the project to New Mexico.

“We couldn’t be happier to bring The Lone Ranger production to New Mexico. The state’s world-class crews, local talent and spectacular locations will be critical in helping us take this iconic story and legendary characters to new heights,” said Jerry Bruckheimer, Producer. “I’d like to thank Governor Martinez, the New Mexico Film Office, and the people of New Mexico for welcoming The Lone Ranger to your state.”

“We welcome The Lone Ranger to Albuquerque,” said Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry. “We’re pleased that our local filmmakers will have job opportunities and appreciate the significant economic impact that this great film will provide to our city.”

Santa Fe Mayor David Coss stated, “I am thrilled that The Lone Ranger will be filmed here in Santa Fe and around New Mexico. Our community colleges have some of the best Film Technician training programs which put students to work; and the economic benefits that movies of this type bring to New Mexico are tremendous.”

The Lone Ranger is directed by Gore Verbinski, produced by Jerry Bruckeimer, and features an all-star cast with Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as John Reid, the Lone Ranger. The Lone Ranger is a thrilling action adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

Director Ti West Talks About "Junkie Hooker" Road Movie and Other Upcoming Horror Projects

$

Ti West's House of the Devil is a wonderful slow burn and left me reeling for days. His newest film The Innkeepers is currently on VOD and will arrive in theaters in February. West recently spoke to The Playlist about the various projects he has in the works.

His projects range from a vignette in an upcoming anthology called The ABCs of Horror to going into pre-production on The Side Effects, a sci-fi movie he describes as “pharmaceutical testing in space and paranoia.” West has also written a script for a Thelma and Lousie-style female road movie about junkie hookers and has been on the hunt for financing.

Here is what West had to say about the current Hollywood climate and what it was like to get backing for The Side Effects:

“When a movie like ‘Paranormal Activity’ is made for 30 grand and makes 150 million dollars, that’s all anyone wants to do anymore. So when I say, we need three and a half, four million dollars to make this movie, they’re like, how about you just make a found-footage movie for 50 grand? We can give you that. And I don’t want to do that. So it’s a weird time for indie movies, but I think we’ll get it made. But like I said, it takes a little longer.”

West does not hate found footage; he recently filmed a segment to V/H/S. The film is a found footage anthology, set to premiere at Sundance this year. What are your thoughts on West as a horror director? Are you looking forward to seeing his upcoming projects?
