HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET Blu-ray Review

0

House at the End of the Street has arrived on Blu-ray and DVD Combo pack from 20th Century Fox. I missed the film in theaters, so this was my first viewing. I must say that I am truly glad I saw this film at home. This is one of the most generic horror movies I have seen as of late, and that is saying something. I feel as though I had seen this story before, oh wait I have seen something called The Last House on the Left. I had hoped that the fact that I am a fan of Jennifer Lawrence, that I would somewhat enjoy House at the End of the Street, but I was wrong.

Directed by Mark Tonderai, the film stars Lawrence, Elisabeth Shue, Max Thieriot, Gil Bellows, Will Bowes, and Jonathan Higgins. The story follows Sarah (Shue) and her daughter Elissa (Lawrence) who are trying to regroup after Sarah's recent divorce. They move to a small town and find their dream home, but things take a turn for the worse when some unexplainable events start happening. The mother and daughter soon find out that they live next door to  the location of a mysterious murder.  A few years ago, the Jacobson parents were murdered by their daughter Carrie-Ann who subsequently fled to the woods and drowned in the nearby dam, or did she? The house is occupied by Ryan (Thieriot), the 18- year old sole survivor.

I can not say much nice about this film at all. The story truly lacked a plot and or any form of character development. There is nothing remotely scary about this movie. It should definitely not be classified as a horror, but more a thriller. If you are scared by this film, then you likely do not venture outdoors much. There are far scarier events that happen in the real world than in this film. Jennifer Lawrence is fantastic in most roles, but this is by far my least favorite role and character - the lack of character development did not make it any easier for me to like her character. The same goes for the rest of the cast. Max Thieriot has been in some decent movies, but he is no stranger to starring in lackluster horror movies. The sad thing is that I can actually say he has starred in a worse movie from the genre, My Soul To Take. I am happy that Elisabeth Shue is still getting work, but I hope she chooses better projects going forward.

If you are scared by loud noises, then you will be scared out of your mind by this Blu-ray. Instead of scary moments audiences are given a bunch of loud noises to attempt to set the tone for the scenes. This lends to moments of intense loudness to moments of dialogue that is very quiet, which means you will have to regularly change the volume on your home theater. The video quality is pretty standard, albeit dark, but looks decent in 1080p.

Unfortunately the Blu-ray does not come with any must-watch special features.

  • Journey Into Terror: Inside House at the End of the Street: This is your run-of the-mill behind the scenes feature with interviews and footage with the director, cast and crew.
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Sneak Peak: The film includes a trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt

More Cool Concept Art for the Sci-Fi Film SNOWPIERCER

Here's a cool set of new concept art for Bong Joon-ho‘s epic looking sci-fi film Snowpiercer. The film is based on the post-apocalyptic French graphic novel Le Transperceneige. The movie is currently in production, and has a great cast of actors that includes Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Alison Pill, John Hurt, Ed Harris, Octavia Spencer, and Song Kang-ho. Earlier this month we shared the first set of concept art from the film, and this new series gives us a glimpse at some snowy wasteland scenery.

Snowpiercer is set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train but a revolution brews.

John-ho is the same director that brought us films such as The Host and Mother, and I'm looking forward to seeing what this movie ends up looking like on the big screen. There's a possibility it will be released this summer. I can't wait to see some actual footage from the movie!

You can get a taste of the musical score from the film below if you want.

DISNEY INFINITY: Your Toybox Just Got a Whole Lot Bigger

That's the best way to describe Disney Infinity, at least if the trailer is any indication. Disney Infinity, which was officially unveiled today, looks to take the concept that was introduced in Disney's Toy Story 3 and blow it out of the water.

Ignoring the influence of games like Sklyanders and Little Big Planet is impossible, but that doesn't take anything away from how excited I am about the project. If Disney can put out a refined gameplay experience that's also easy to pick up and play with friends (like the aforementioned Sklylanders), Infinity might just be the next big thing Disney hopes it to be.

For those who missed it, Disney Infinity is an open world sandbox game that allows you to play as more than a few characters from the Disney lineup, and deftly includes a huge assortment from the Pixar movies as well. The game features its own portal like device, where you can purchase figures to swap in and out of gameplay at will. As you play in the world you unlock various set pieces that you can use in the world however you see fit, mixing and matching pieces and characters from different franchises to truly create a world all your own.

Depending on the amount of customization available, I could see it truly being a time sink, and a fun one at that, but the tools must be there and the learning curve can't be too steep. You can catch a shot below of some of the available roster (at least initially), but I wouldn't be surprised if before the game releases in June of 2013 there are a few more characters announced.

Disney could really have a hit on its hands if they learn from their competition and come out with a highly polished and fun product.

So with that my dream Disney adventure featuring Dodger and Mr.Incredible starts to take shape! HaHA! (cue Evil Professor Laugh)

Valve Picks 10 More Games From Greenlight

Looks like 10 more "indie" games have been picked from Valve's Project Greenlight. In case you have been living under the proverbial rock, Greenlight is a voting process that was created by Valve in which people in the Steam community pick their choices for the next game (or 10) to be put on the Steam client. Even if the game is well known, if that publisher has not worked with Steam before, they still have to go through the process. I think this is a good way to get games out there, even if putting the power in the hands of the players is not the most academic of choices. I don't judge your tastes, people, but I worry nonetheless.

Here are the next 10 choices:

  • Akaneiro: Demon Hunters
  • Asylum
  • DLC Quest
  • Eador. Masters of the Broken World
  • La-Mulana
  • Leisure Suit Larry
  • MaK
  • The Age of Decadence
  • Unepic
  • War For The Underworld

This will be the forth set of games chosen from this voting process. Have you guys checked any of these out? Also, Leisure Suit, really?

THE KILLING Heading Back to AMC for Third Season

Good news, The Killing is headed back to AMC for a third season, according to ComingSoon. Veena Sud is set to return as executive producer, writer and showrunner in the deal that was reached by the network and Fox Television Studios. As part of the deal, actors Mireille Enos (Sarah Linden) and Joel Kinnaman (Stephen Holder) are also returning. The new season will focus on a new case, which will be resolved over the course of 12 episodes. Filming is slated to begin February 25th in Vancouver.

'The Killing' from day one has been a truly original take on the crime drama. Veena Sud and the rest of the talented creative team are hard at work shaping the lives of Linden and Holder, portrayed by the terrific Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman," said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president. "We're so pleased to welcome back 'The Killing' for another season."

Fox TV Studios President, David Madden, said, “We have always believed in 'The Killing' and remain extremely proud of it, which is why we all worked so hard to find a scenario that could give it new life.”

“I couldn’t be happier to know that I will be returning to work with AMC, FTVS and Mireille and Joel on what is and has always been a passion project for me. To the fans that have supported the series, thank you for doing so. My team and I will work hard to deliver the best story that we can for season three,” said Veena Sud.

Here is the synopsis for the new season:

A year after closing the Rosie Larsen case, Sarah Linden is no longer a detective. But when her ex-partner Stephen Holder's search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connects to a previous murder investigation by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she'd left behind.

I have been a fan of The Killing since it first aired on April 3, 2011. Are you looking forward to seeing the third season?

Here's an awesomely fun video game inspired short film called When Gordon Met Chell directed by Michael Shanks. The short follows Chell from the Portal series as she escapes from Aperture science to find Gordon Freeman from Half-Life surrounded by a group Combine goons who have no match for the Portal and Gravity Guns.

The movie is an incredibly action-packed love story that involves two of the most beloved game characters in gaming. The movie was made on no budget, and as you'll see it turned out extremely impressive. Enjoy the show!

Russell Crowe Discusses MAN OF STEEL and Super Sonic Superman

As fans of Superman, we're all hoping that Zack Snyder will be able to pull of the modern day Superman film that we've all been waiting for. Russell Crowe believes it will be! He plays Jor-El in the film, and in a recent interview with Reelz he talks about the complexity of the story, and why Man of Steel will be different from any other Superman film that's been made...

It's very complicated, it's really complex. I don't think anybody has really tried to get into the psychology of what it must be like to be Superman and what people would really respond like in a modern society if somebody like that just popped up. I think Zack Snyder was given a great deal of responsibility because when it comes to comic book heroes and superhero films the top of the food chain is Superman. I think the biggest indicator for me of how it's looking is that the financier of the film has sent me gushing emails, he just loves it.

I'm really looking forward to seeing it, it's a massive undertaking. It takes you on the ground to Krypton, it takes you to a planet where the sun is four times larger than ours and you get to experience that stuff and if you've seen the trailers you realize that this Superman is not just floating through the air held up by a wire, this Superman is super sonic. I'm really looking forward to the way that people will respond to it.

So if Crowe is to be believed, then it sounds like we have something really special coming our way. It's cool to see that he's excited about seeing it! We're all excited about seeing it, and I think Crowe is going to be great in the role that was previously played by Marlon Brando. Hopefully we get to see him in a little action this time around.

Man of Steel flies into theaters in 2D, 3D and IMAX on June 14th, 2013! You can watch the trailer again here. The movie also stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Michael Shannon as General Zod, who's going to kick so much ass in this movie!

Next summer, “Man of Steel” is coming to the big screen. The film is from director Zack Snyder and producers Charles Roven, Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer & Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics.

Awesome Teaser Trailer for the Horror Sequel S-VHS

$

One of my favorite films at Sundance last year was the horror anthology V/H/S, and I'm extremely excited to watch the sequel this year which is premiering at this year's Sundance film fest. The first teaser trailer has been released for S-VHS, it shows off what kind of horror is in store for us, and I like what I see! It looks like it could be bigger and scarier than the first film!

This anthology horror sequel has segments directed by Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun), Gareth Huw Evans (The Raid: Redemption) and Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre), Edúardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale (Blair Witch Project), and Adam Wingard (You’re Next). Then there's a wraparound segment directed by You’re Next writer Simon Barrett. Here's the synopsis provided by Sundance:

Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static—white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than just magnetic tape. They are imprinted with the very soul of evil.

From the demented minds that brought you last year’s V/H/S comes S-VHS, an all-new anthology of dread, madness, and gore. This follow-up ventures even further down the demented path blazed by its predecessor, discovering new and terrifying territory in the genre. This is modern horror at its most inventive, shrewdly subverting our expectations about viral videos in ways that are just as satisfying as they are sadistic. The result is the rarest of all tapes—a second generation with no loss of quality.

I can't wait to see the insanity unfold on the big screen! Click on the image below to watch the trailer!

The gang over at CinemaSins has released their latest movie mistake video. This time they point out every nit-picky mistake in the amazing Rian Johnson movie Looper in 3 minutes or less. But let's be honest, they aren't really mistakes as much as they are just general complaints from someone who didn't like the movie. It's all in good fun though, there's a couple of funny moments.

Looper. You either loved it or hated it. Or, if you're like us, you wrote down a list of sins you found in the film. Here's everything we found wrong in Looper, presented in 3 minutes or less.

Peter Farrelly Talks About DUMB AND DUMBER TO

$

Dumb & Dumber is one of my favorite Jim Carrey movies, and one of the funniest movies I grew up with. I would laugh so ridiculously hard while watching this film. It was just so insanely stupid I couldn't help but enjoy the hell out of it. The film helped launch the career of directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly, unfortunately they haven't made anything as funny since.

It's previously been reported that Carrey and Jeff Daniels would be back to reprise their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne in the sequel, and that it would be called Dumb & Dumber To. In a recent interview with Comingsoon Peter Farrelly talks about how the sequel ended up coming together, and where it currently stands in the production process.

If we were going to do a sequel it was always going to be 'Dumb and Dumber,' There were no other movies we've made that are real sequel type movies--maybe 'The Three Stooges.' We always said that it would be fun to do another one just because it was such a fun experience and we kind of left them off where they started in that movie so it is the kind of thing you could do a couple of them. But over the years, Jim didn't want to do another one, until recently, about a year ago or so, he called us up and he was in a hotel watching TV and 'Dumb & Dumber' came on and he sat there howling and said, 'We gotta do another one!' and I said, 'That's awesome, let's do it.'

I'm sure Carrey is willing to jump on board now because his career kind of needs a boost, and a Dumb and Dumber sequel could reinvigorate it. Farrelly went on to say that they have a script that they're happy with, but doesn't really give any story details. He says it's really just all about the characters...

We have the script and I will say this: I love the script but if I told you about the script, you'd be completely impressed, but if I told you about the first one--'Well, what's it about?' 'It's about these two guys that find this briefcase and they follow this girl to Aspen.' You'd say, 'Well, where's the movie?' It's not about the plot, it's about the characters. It's a really hard movie to explain to people and make them see it, but I guarantee you that it's sort of exactly like the first one. We pick up from that 20 years later, we explain what they've done for the last 17 or 18 years, we take off from that and it's just a lot of laughs. It's at Warner Bros. and right now it's being financed outside the studio, but it will be released by Warner Bros.--knock on wood--and that's all being worked out right now.

If you liked 'Dumb & Dumber,' you'll like this because it's the same and more. It's really fun.

As a fan of the first movie I'm really excited to see what they have planned for the sequel. It's going to be fun seeing these two characters back up on the big screen together 17 years later. It was previously revealed that the plot will follow Harry and Lloyd 20 years later as they try to track down one of their children. This could have changed, but that's all we have to go off of right now. This is what Bobby Farrelly had to say about the movie in a previous interview,

I can tell you that there is no growth out of either one of them and it's 20 years later... these guys are in regular life and they're still basically children at heart. The story revolves around the fact that one of them may have sired a child. They want to go and find the child because he's having a kidney problem and he wants to ask him for one of his kidneys.

All we can hope for is that it will be just as funny and entertaining as they say it will be. Are you excited to see these chracters up on the big screen?

Mondo has released a couple of great new pieces of poster art for the two classic Steven Spielberg films, Jaws and E.T. The Extraterrestrial. The E.T. poster was created by Mike Mitchell, and the Jaws poster was made by Laurent Durieux

I especially like the E.T. print, it's just a beautifully striking design. The Jaws print has kind of a travel poster feel to it. They both go on sale tomorrow Thursday January 17th at a random time. Make sure to keep an eye on that Mondo Twitter account so you can buy one if you want it.

Trailer for MUD With Matthew McConaughey and Resse Witherspoon

Here's the trailer for a film called Mud, which is scheduled to be shown at The Sundance Film Festival, which we will be leaving for tomorrow. The movie was directed by Jeff Nichols who made the great film Take Shelter, in which Michael Shannon gave one of the best performances of his career.

His new movie stars Resse Witherspoon, as well as Matthew McConaughey in a different role than we're used to seeing him in. He plays a mysterious man who leads two young boys on an intriguing adventure that turns into something dangerous. Nichols is a great director and storyteller, and I'm looking forward to checking this one out!

Two boys, Ellis and his friend Neckbone, who find a man named Mud hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud describes fantastic scenarios — he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper, who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow.

You'll get a chance to see the movie for yourself on April 26th. Look out for our review of it, and watch the trailer below.

This is the second part of the animated film adaptation of Frank Miller's amazing graphic novel. The movie will be released on blu-ray and DVD on January 29th, and I'm looking forward to seeing it. Video Tribute to the 2013 Oscar Snubs

Not everyone is happy with the 2013 Oscar nominations. There were a ton of great movies released this year and not all of them could be nominated. Every year someone or some movie is getting snubbed. That's just how the game is played. I'm not really disappointed in anything that's been nominated this year, but there are some movies and performances that did deserve to be on the list of nominees. Here's a great little tribute video from JoBlo that pays tribute to all the talented individuals and great films that ended up getting snubbed this year.

Watch the video and let us what your biggest disappointment is in the Oscars this year! I would have liked to see Seven Psychopaths, Moonrise Kingdom, and Perks of Being a Wallflower get some recognition.
