75 Years of Manic Pixie Dream Girls - Video Supercut

A film critic by the name of Nathan Rabin coined the phrase "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" as a way to describe Kirsten Dunst’s role in Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown. He described this Manic Pixie Dream Girl as being "that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures." Here's a great video compilation that pays tribute to 75 years of these type of female characters. The movie comes from Flavorwire, and it turned out great!

Here's the Unlikely Reason Why ALIEN Was Rated X in the UK

$
0
0

When Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror class Alien was released in the UK it was slapped with an X-rating, but not for what you might think. For the time I could see why they might give it a rating like that do to the awesomely intense horror content. You've got to admit that the scene where the alien xenomorph bloodily bursts out of John Hurt's chest was pretty terrifying. But that's not why it got the rating! It wasn't the violence at all.

In 1979 the British Board of Film Classification gave it the X rating because the movie offered a "perverse view of the reproductive function." So what in the hell does that mean? Well, remember the scene in which Hurt's character Kane inspects the pulsating eggs? That's it... yeah, I know. In the movie's file, the censor explains what about the scene made them uncomfortable:

I feel uneasy about passing for 14-year-olds a film which uses sexual imagery in a horror context. The images are not always explicit but run like a dark undercurrent throughout suggesting a powerful, threatening, unnamed force. Occasionally the image is explicit as when the leathery egg opens up to reveal a glistening pulsating membrane which erupts into a squid-like creature.

Really!? The fact they saw that tells me those censors must have had some pretty sick minds themselves. Who in their right mind would watch that scene and think anything sexual about it? The censor went on to say that these feelings might be confusing to younger teens...

I don't want to flash ideas like this to teenagers who might not have come to terms with the normal sexual functions. The early teens are a troublesome time with physical changes making terrific demands on emotional stability. I don't myself want to pass for this age-group a film which might be disturbing in a non-specific way to a significant proportion of them.

Personally I think the censor is the one that was confused. And then there's the comment he makes about being "disturbing in a non-specific way," that's just a good way to describe going through puberty in general. Did any of you think about sex when watching Alien for the first time?

Season 8 will premiere on June 30th at 9pm, and will serve as a lead-in for the cable networks new crime drama Ray Donovan. It was previously a lead in to Homeland. I've also heard that Season 8 will in also be the last season of the show, which is sad, but we knew it would eventually have to come to an end.

The early return of the series has not affected production on Dexter. Showtime entertainment president David Nevins said, “There is no less production time, just a little less vacation time between the seasons.” He also said that the drama’s producers and cast had received enough lead time to adjust to the scheduling changes.

Crazy Red-Band Trailer for A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE MIND OF CHARLES SWAN III

Check out this crazy new Red-Band trailer for this insane looking new comedy, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. It was directed by Roman Coppola and has a great cast of actors that includes Charlie Sheen, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Aubrey Plaza, Patricia Arquette, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Katheryn Winnick. I enjoy watching offbeat movies like this, and it looks like it's going to be a weirdly great movie. The trailer basically gives us a glimpse of what inside the mind of Charles Swan, and it's definitely NSFW.

Set in a stylized Los Angeles, 'A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE MIND OF CHARLES SWAN III' is a playful comedy of lost love, friendship, revenge fantasies, and Brandy Alexanders. Charles (Charlie Sheen) is a successful graphic designer whose fame, money and charm have provided him with a seemingly perfect life. When his true love, a perplexing beauty named Ivana, suddenly breaks off their relationship, Charles' life falls apart and he swirls into a downward spiral of doubt, confusion and reflection. With the support of his loyal intimates— Kirby (Jason Schwartzman), Saul (Bill Murray), and his sister, Izzy (Patricia Arquette) -- he begins the hard road of self-evaluation to come to terms with a life without Ivana. The film begs the question: Is it possible to love and hate someone at the same time?

The movie will be released on February 8th, 2013, but it hitd iTUNES and VOD this week.

Stephen King's UNDER THE DOME Series has a Premiere Date!

CBS has announced that the new Steven Spielberg and Stephen King drama Under The Dome will premiere on Monday, June 24th at 10 pm. The first season of the series will have 13-episodes, and it's one of my most anticipated series of the year. I'm a huge fan of both Spielberg and King, so it's awesome that they've come together to bring this great story to life for us.

Brian K. Vaughan of LOST to wrote the series, and the director of the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon TattooNiels Arden Ople, is directing the first episode. Here's the story description:

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a selectwoman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn’t just short. It’s running out.

It was also previously revealed that there would be a few changes to the story such as the introduction of new characters, and tweaked back stories of some of the characters that already exist. King is ok with the changes that have been made. I'm excited to see how this turns out!

Psychosexual Horror Series PENNY DREADFUL Coming to Showtime

Showtime has landed a great sounding new horror series from Skyfall director Sam Mendes and screenwriter John Logan. The psychosexual horror project is called Penny Dreadful which will feature some of horror literature’s most famous characters. Some of those characters include Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, Dorian Gray and Dracula – as they become embroiled in Victorian London. Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins says the ensemble series will be “very realistic and very grounded, not Bela Lugosi. All exist in human form in turn-of-century London.” He added that Logan “has been obsessed with monsters in literature since childhood.” He wrote the project on spec, and it was reported that he will write every episode of the series. They also hope that Mendes will direct the series as well.

Here's a description of very cool sounding series:

In PENNY DREADFUL, some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – become embroiled in Victorian London.  The series weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation. This project marks Logan and Mendes’ second major collaboration, following Skyfall, their recent critically-acclaimed and box office record-breaking James Bond film, which Mendes directed and Logan co-wrote; and their first ever collaboration for television. The project will be produced by Mendes’ production company Neal Street Productions.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this series turns out, because it sounds like it has some pretty awesome potential. On top of the it's got a couple of very talented individuals brining it to life. What are your thoughts on the new series? Here's the more info from the press release:

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 12, 2013) – Some of literature’s most iconic figures will step into the light on SHOWTIME in PENNY DREADFUL, a psychosexual horror series created, written and executive produced by three-time Oscar® nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator) and executive produced by Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road) and Neal Street’s Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, Call The Midwife), it was announced today by David Nevins, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks. PENNY DREADFUL will begin production in London in the second half of 2013.
“John Logan and Sam Mendes are two of the great storytellers of our time,” said Nevins.  ”The visual spectacle combined with the psychological insight in their reimagining of these iconic literary characters seems totally mesmerizing to me.  This promises to be a wholly original television show.”

Here's a great animated comedy short that I'm sure you'll enjoy. It's a zombie love story called Love In Decay. It was directed by Ryan Cooper at Muckpuddy, and was part of the New Zealand 48 hour film competition. The short ended up being quite entertaining and really funny.

The story revolves around a chance meeting between two post-apocalyptic Zombie street cleaners, and follows them "in to an unexpected and unpredictable, whirlwind romance." I absolutely love how it ends! Enjoy the show!

NINJA TURTLES Movie Starts Shooting in April

$

Looks like the Michael Bay-produced and Jonathan Liebesman-directed new live-action Ninja Turtles movie will start shooting this coming April in New York. The news comes Production Weekly who tweeted the following...

The film was in pre-production last June, but was put on hold reportedly because of a crappy script, and the director wanted more time to make sure the visual effects he wanted for the movie would be at the level he wanted them. The Ninja Turtles are expected to be motion capture CGI creations.

On the upside they want to use the same kind of crazy martial arts fighting style that we saw in The Raid, on the down side the origin of the turtles story might be changed from mutants to aliens. At least that what it was when they first started developing the film. If we're lucky it's been changed back in the re-write of the script. It would be great if this movie turns out as badass as the fans and I would like it to be.

Fun Set of Pictogram Movie Poster Designs

$

Here's a great set of Pictogram movie posters created by designer Matteo Civasch of studio H-57. Each poster lays out the plot of the movie it represents. Some of the movies include Lord of the Rings, E.T., The Shining, The Exrocist, Alien, Robin Hood, The Matrix, and AvatarCivaschi explains his designs saying...

This new set of stories shows our passion for the great, super-popular movies of all time. You have the movies that made the world cry (E.T.), scream (AlienThe Shining), think (The Matrix), hope (Robin Hood), and so on. Each movie, if it's really great, can create a whole new world, tell a story that's never been told before, and give life to unforgettable characters.

Squeezing all of these things into a few icons is fun. In the case of particularly long movies or sagas (like The Lord of the Rings), the final result is even funnier.

2013 Golden Globe Winners List!

$

0

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were great as the hosts of the 2013 Golden Globe Awards! They had some pretty funny moments, unfortunately Tommy Lee Jones didn't seem amused at anything going on at the Awards that night. That guy looked like he was going to kill someone! Especially during one of my favorite moments in the show that included Will Ferrell and Kristen Wigg presenting the award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.

There weren't really that many surprises in the acting categories. As expected Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway both picked up awards picked up awards for Les Miserables, and then Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jessica Chastain all took home awards as well. I thought these were all in the bag. As for Christoph Waltz, winning Best Supporting actor, it was either going to be him or Leonardo DiCaprio. I was rooting for DiCaprio, but I'm fine with Waltz winning.

I was surprised however with Ben Affleck winning Best Director, and Argo winning Best Picture Drama. Although I thought Argo was a great movie, I didn't think it had what it took to win, I thought for sure it would go to Lincoln, I was obviously wrong. The other big surprise was HBO's Girls winning the awards that it one, it's a good show, but I never thought it was an award winning series. I thought Modern Family was going to take the top prize.

Check out the full list of winners below, and let us know what you thought of the awards and winners! I've also included the opening monologue and the Ferrell/Wigg comedy sketch.

Will Next Batman Movie Be Based on ARKHAM ASYLUM?

$
0
0

We already know that Warner Bros. plans to reboot the Batman franchise now that Nolan is done with it. The next time we see batman on the big screen will be in Justice League. But what will we see in the next solo Batman movie? A lot of people speculate that it might be based on the video game Arkham Asylum.

Fusible points out that Warner Bros. has registered more than a dozen domain names that include ArkhamUniverse.com and BatmanArkhamBegins.com. It would be pretty awesome to see an Arkham Asylum based Batman film, but there's no indication that these domain names are for a movie. They could very well be for a new Arkham Asylum video game. But, last year Cosmic Book News reported that we could expect a new Batman film in 2016 which would be based on Batman: Arkham Asylum. Are these domain names confirmation of that? I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Check out the full list of registered domain names below that shows that they are covering all their bases...

arkhamuniverse.com (Arkham Universe)
batmanarkahmuniverse.com (Batman Arkham Universe)
batmanarkhamarises.com (Batman Arkham Arises)
batmanarkhambegins.com (Batman Arkham Begins)
batmanarkhamdarkknight.com (Batman Arkham Dark Knight)
batmanarkhamknight.com (Batman Arkham Knight)
batmanarkhamlegend.com (Batman Arkham Legend)
batmanarkhamlegends.com (Batman Arkham Legends)
batmanarkhamnight.com (Batman Arkham Night)
batmanarkhamorigins.com (Batman Arkham Origins)
batmanarkhamstories.com (Batman Arkham Stories)
darkknightarkham.com (Dark Knight Arkham)
dcarkhamuniverse.com (DC Arkham Universe)
dcarkhamverse.com (DC Arkhamverse)
thearkhamuniverse.com (The Arkham Universe)

The URLs were registered through an anonymous third-party vendor called MarkMonitor, a company that several studios use to register their official film websites.

Would you like to see a movie based on Arkham Asylum? I think it might be the best way to transition into a new movie series without Christopher Nolan
