Here's an incredibly cool piece of Geek Art featuring Magneto taking apart Iron Man. I actually don't recall seeing these two Marvel characters together before, but I think it's safe to say Magneto has the upper hand. That is unless the metal used to build Iron Man's armor isn't magnetic. The piece was illustrated by DeviantArt user BrentMcKee.

This great film concept follows Hansel and Gretel working as bounty hunters, tracking down supernatural witches and destroying them.

Over the years, the siblings became expert hunters, famous for their proficiency at tracking and taking down their prey. Although still recovering from their ordeal, their work is relatively easy as for an unknown reason harmful spells and curses do not work well against them.

The Mayor of Augsburg recruits them to rid the town and nearby forests of an evil sorceress (Famke Janssen) who is planning to sacrifice many local children at the witches' gathering during the upcoming 'Blood Moon' night in two days time. To make things worse, the duo also has to deal with the brutal Sheriff Berringer (Peter Stormare) who has taken power in Augsburg and conducts a very indiscriminate witch-hunt of his own.

Joe Carnahan Teases Opening Scene to Mark Millar's NEMESIS

The Grey director Joe Carnahan has been working on developing a feature film adaptation of Mark Millar's comic book Nemesis for a few months, and he's currently in the process of writing the screenplay. I always thought Carnahan was the right man for the job for this comic, and he recently took to his twitter account to tease the opening of the film...

That's enough to to hook me! If you haven't read the comic, it opens up with Nemesis destroying a part of Tokyo, and brutally murdering a police chief. There's no word on if Carnahan will use this opening, but there's always the chance he could mix it up and do something different, something even crazier. The comic is full of insanity that Carnahan could pull from. This is a such an insane villainous character, and I can't wait to see what Carnahan is planning to do with him!

For those of you not really familiar with the comic, here's the comic plot summary...

What if the smartest, toughest costumed bad ass in the world was totally evil? Meet Nemesis. He's systematically been destroying the lives of every police chief in Asia, and he's now set his sights on Washington, DC. Between you and me, the police don't have a chance.

2013 is upon us, and it looks like it's going to be yet another great year of movies! Disney has released a fun little TV spot for Sam Raimi's OZ The Great and Powerful which gives us a countdown to the new year. Disney is using the opportunity to show off a couple new bits of new footage, for fans looking forward to the great looking fantasy adventure film. The spot comes with the chance to win a trip to Seattle Washington....

Tweet your New Year's Wish with #DisneyOz for your chance to win a trip to Seattle, Washington, the Emerald City.

Oz: The Great And Powerful looks like it's going to be awesome! I especially love the wicked witch design. It stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams. It's set to be released in theaters on March 8th, 2013.

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

When small-time magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) pulls one flimflam too many, he finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz where he must somehow transform himself into the great and powerful Wizard—and just maybe into a better man as well.

HALO 4: Master Chief Recreated Using Typography

I love stuff like this. Etrav689 on Deviant Art (otherwise known as Evan Travelstead) has created this very sweet portrait of Halo's Master Chief, and the cool thing is he did it mostly by just using text. The fact that the text itself is actually various quotes from the series is a pretty sweet detail as well. I love everything about this, but one of the standout features is how he used small pops of color on a few lines of the text to indicate a level of highlights and shading. You can take a look at a closeup of the helmet below to see some additional detail.  If you like what you see, you can catch more of Evan's work in his gallery or on his official website. If you dig it let us know in the comments!

Which Actor Had The Best/Worst 2012?

$
0
0

It's not news that 2012 was a huge year for movies. In acting we saw super heroes soar, spies spike, and sci-fi sail through the charts as our favorite male actors made names or embarrassed themselves on the silver screen. So who had the best/worst 2012 in our opinion?

Best Actor of 2012: Joseph Gordon Levitt

JGL has been on the rise for a couple years now but this year was his crowning year in acting if there ever was one. Looper, The Dark Knight Rises, Lincoln, Premium Rush Levitt worked and thrived with the best. With rumors of becoming the new Batman on the horizon 2013 will only be brighter for the young actor as he continues to work.

Worst Actor of 2012: Taylor Kitsch

Man, what a rough year this guy had. Savages, John Carter, and Battleshipwere all viewed as failures on all levels and the latter two went down as two of the biggest flops in movie history? The worst part about it? Kitsch had absolutely nothing to do with it. Read the reviews if you don't believe it. Kitsch is not the worst actor in Hollywood by any stretch, but something tells me it will be difficult for him to find work after this struggle of a year. My advice Taylor? Fire your agent and do a few indie films to get back in the game.

Have any other actors you think made the Best/Worst list more so than our selections? Post below!

Demand A Plan Parody Tells Celebrities To Go F*** Themselves

Violence in media has gone from back burner to forefront issue at the end of 2012, and it seems as though we will be hearing a lot of it in the coming 2013. Celebrities, directors, and all faces of the industry are all speaking out and making their voice heard on the issue. Some like Quentin Tarantino are defending the status quo, while a handful of celebrities (including Jamie Foxx who stars in Tarantino's Django Unchained) are speaking out with ads advocating against the violence. This video parody shows the new "Demand A Plan" campaign with an odd twist. Definitely worth a watch and a good talking point as we head into 2013.

Jay Z Confirmed to Score THE GREAT GATSBY plus New Photos

Baz Luhrmann's vision of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel The Great Gatsby looks incredible. I love what I've seen from it, both the visuals and the acting look top notch. He managed to make a book I thought was boring back in high school look intriguing as hell.

To make things even more interesting, it's been confirmed that Jay Z is scoring the film. The news comes from singer, songwriter, and producer Jeymes Samuel a.k.a. The Bullitts who revealed via twitter...

There's also a few new photos from the film for you to check out featuring Leonardo DiCraprio,  Joel Edgerton and the beautiful Carey Mulligan. The movie hits theaters on May 10th, 2013, and you can check out the latest trailer for the film below.

From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. The filmmaker will create his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before, in a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. “The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, TomBuchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Badass Seven Kings Fantasy Art

This is just a badass piece of fantasy art I had to share with you called Seven Kings, and it was created by CGHUB artsit flaptraps, for the cover of a book by the same name written by John R. Fultz. There's such an incredible energy in this art, and I love the style. Just this image makes me want to see a movie made!

I've never read the book but here's a description from it...

In the jungles of Khyrei, an escaped slave seeks vengeance and finds the key to a savage revolution.

In the drought-stricken Stormlands, the Twin Kings argue the destiny of their kingdom: one walks the path of knowledge, the other treads the road to war.

Beyond the haunted mountains King Vireon confronts a plague of demons bent on destroying his family.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700: Not Quite the End of the World, but Truly an End to an Era

$

0

Well, here we are. The big 700, and finally we have an answer to the big question.

Who is the new Spider-Man?

Actually, lets hold off on that for a second.

First, lets take the issue as a whole. Its a whopper of a book. all 104 pages of it, and after my initial reading I wasn't angry or even sad. I wasn't sure what to feel. Before we get into specifics, spoilers abound after this point. You have been warned though, so With that said lets dive in.

I agree with Dan Slott's words on twitter recently. He said "A book is more than a single page or a single panel", and I couldn't agree more. I tend to detest spoilers in general, and the last 3 issues of Slott's run have been plagued by them, but somehow I avoided the proverbial spoiler mine field that is twitter and was able to digest all 3 of these final issues with an unclouded lens. 700 is the latest and  last issue of Amazing Spider-Man, and you can tell even in the first few pages. Throughout the story we see characters from all points of Peter's life, living and not, and you truly get a sense that this era of Spider-Man is coming to an end. While I thought this particular segment was a bit drawn out for my tastes, its not worth any kind of ding on the issue as a whole.

I'll be honest. I genuinely thought that Peter would find someway out of this, and by the end of the issue we would indeed have a new Spider-Man, but not because Peter was no longer around. I put together in my head that he would have to do something that crossed his very well defined moral line, and because of that circumstance he would pass the mantle to someone else. Kudos to Slott and Marvel for having the stones to follow through with their vision, regardless of how you feel about it. The premise is solid, and if its anything like the last few pages of 700, I could find myself loving Dr. Octavius' time under the mask. He's cocky, full of himself, and supremely intelligent. Other than their intellect, he's nothing like Peter. He's not different in the cliché 90's way either. The being edgy and rebellious for the sake of being different (see also: umpteen pouches for no reason). He's a character with real history and a true, albeit wierd,  connection to Peter, and personally I'm intrigued with where they go from here.

Now I know that some people are not happy with this new status quo and I totally understand that, to a point. We all have characters we love and to see them die or just not utilized to their full potential is crushing to a long time comic fan (I'm still waiting on my Cardiac revival). However, one of the reasons these characters have lasted so long is the creativity of the teams behind the wheel, and I think Slott and co. have earned enough trust to be able to do something fresh and different with the character, especially without being threatened or insulted. Some people will say its One More Day all over again, but I disagree. One More Day is  a hot button issue for me. If you want to see me rage in all my nerd glory just bring up that story and sit down for about 30 minutes because I have alot to say. My biggest problem with it wasn't that they wanted a new direction, it was how they went about it. The decision was based on one man's opinion of something not related to comics in any way, and he shoe horned that belief into the character's mythos. This is vastly different. A new direction for a character that has been around a long time isn't the end of the world, and while I understand its disappointing for Peter fan's (I use to include myself in that group btw), it doesn't' take away from the potential this new storyline presents.

As for the inevitable questions on whether Peter will be back anytime soon, here are Dan's thoughts on the subject (courtesy of Newsarama).

Nrama: OK, I get the humor, Dan. But there are also fans who are saying this isn't permanent. We've seen mind-swaps and people with leftover memories or personalities before in comics, like Rogue and Carol Danvers. Most people think it's only a matter of time before Peter comes back, so was the mindswap technique used to leave that door more easily opened?

Slott: I love that response. I love that immediate response of "this won't last." To me, that's the same kind of mindset that says, "Oh, well, Mr. Freeze trapped Batman in a snowcone machine, but he'll get out next week." When I think of the number of times I've put Spider-Man in, like, a death trap or a terrible situation, and readers immediately go, "Well, come on, the book's called Amazing Spider-Man. What? They're not going to publish it next month? Of course he'll get out." And it only took us to go, "Hey, guess what? We're canceling Spider-Man at #700" to make people realize this is real. It's like people freaking out that Wally West was The Flash. "There's only one Flash! It's Barry Allen!" Or before that, when they said, "Barry Allen isn't the Flash! It's Jay Garrick!" I know every single person has done that for The Flash at some point.

evidently Stan doesn't agree with the new direction. Might be more out of jest than seriousness,

but the pic, serious or not, represents how some people feel.

One, he has a point. Two, I actually like when companies take chances. With Batman RIP, I was aggravated with DC for not keeping Bruce away longer, because I felt they didn't give Grayson the time he deserved under the cowl. I felt they dipped their toe in the pool, got push-back, and then bid a hasty retreat and moved up the timetable for his return. In Marvel's case, Captain America was away longer than I expected him to be, and while I was glad he returned, they probably could've even waited longer. The fact is we have to miss our heroes every now and then to truly appreciate them. Its also okay to go somewhere new. It might not be what Stan Lee wants, but that's okay, you can't please everyone. What you can do is tell an interesting story that doesn't end quite like everyone thinks it will. I always thought Peter would win, and Slott and co. took my expectations and gave me something I wasn't prepared for, and ultimately something I actually quite enjoyed.

I might be in the minority here, but to me Amazing 700 was a wonderful send off for a true hero, and a promising start in the journey to redemption of a longtime villain. For me that was enough, but if you disagree then let me know and tell me why. Always eager to hear your thoughts!
