JJ Abrams Rejects Offer To Direct Star Wars For Star Trek Loyalty

Empire recently sat down with director JJ Abrams and asked him why he turned down Disney's offer to helm Star Wars Episode VII. The director, who will be releasing Star Trek Into Darkness later next year couldn't be convinced...

There were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan (of Star Wars), I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things.

I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them.
Cop out? Who knows but it would seem that the list of directors available to help the upcoming sequels is growing ever shorter. Someone who has been ridiculously quiet for a while now about his next film who everyone seems to be leaving out is Christopher Nolan, and while that's a snowballs chance in hell that he would even consider it...I'd be interested to find out if he was on the short list Disney is contacting about revamping the franchise. Me personally? I like the idea of Jon Favreau

James Gunn Shoots Down GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Casting Rumors

A few days ago it was reported that Zachary Levi (ChuckThor: The Dark World) was in the running to play Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy. According to director James Gunn though, that rumor is completely false, and he took to Facebook to set the record straight.

Almost everything in that Variety article on the Guardians of the Galaxy casting (and all the following articles based on it) was/is completely inaccurate. Just for the record.

I always thought is was a little strange that he would be in the running for the role, especially since he's already playing a character in the Marvel universe as Fandral in Thor: The Dark World. It didn't makes sense to me that Marvel would want him in Guardians of the Galaxy as well. Turns out they don't.

Joel Edgerton (The Warrior), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas), Lee Pace (Lincoln and The Hobbit), Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), James Marsden (X-Men) and Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom) were all originally rumored to be in the running. Chances are one of them will end up getting the part.

Gunn's quote has since been removed from Facebook.

Joss Whedon Still Bugged He Didn't get His BUFFY Animated Series

Even though Joss Whedon has become one of Hollywood's biggest directors he still thinks about his past efforts, and how some of them never went anywhere. He's still bugged that he couldn't find anyone to produce his Buffy the Vampire Slayer animated series that he wanted to do after the live-action series ended.

In a recent interview with Assignment X here's what Whedon had to say,

We got to do almost everything we wanted to do. The only thing we didn't get to do is an animated version, which was a delight for us because the writers themselves were working on it. We wrote seven scripts ... it was 'what could we not do [on the regular series].' They were really fun to write. We could not sell the show. We could not sell an animated Buffy, which I still find incomprehensible.

The series would have followed the Buffy gang during some early high school adventures. It is kind of crazy that this animated series never happened! The show had a huge following, fans would have loved it, it generated a lot of buzz, but for some reason no network would come on board to produce the show, which is ridiculous to me, too.

Here's a fun promo clip from the series that was unfortunately never meant to be. But it's animation! Who's to say it couldn't be done now?! It looks like it would have been an awesome series! Would you watch a Buffy the Vampire Slayer animated series? I think Whedon should try and pitch the series now.

Awesome Set DOCTOR WHO Fan Art!

Check out this incredibly awesome set of Doctor Who poster fan art created by ElectroCereal. He's created three illustrations; one for the ninth, tenth, and eleventh doctors. Each illustration that was created includes a note from the artist.

I love Doctor Who, and I've really been enjoying Matt Smith in the role of The Doctor, he's been incredibly fun to watch. But I also really liked both Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. I would have liked to see more of Eccleston, but Smith might just be my favorite Doctor so far though. Check out the art below and let us know who your favorite Doctor is!

This one is special :3 As some of you may already know, i'm a HUUUGE Doctor Who fan, so, when i thought of making some new posters for this con season i couldn't reject the idea of paying a little tribute to the Doctor!

Here's the first one (of three) featuring the ninth Doctor, portrayed greatly by Christopher Eccleston. Personally, i didn't like ninth as much as i like tenth or eleven, but some of his stories were LOTS of fun. I tried toresume the whole season in one poster but eventually some of the stuff had to stay out of the composition (i specially miss not drawing Jackie Tyler in her nightrobe xDD CLASSIC) but i think i kept in the mostimportant stuff.

Also! This poster, as well as the other two will have the amazing amazing colors of Laurakjoge, but you'll have to wait for them since i'll post them next week, after Madrid's Expocomic (more info on that later!). For now, hope you like the lineart!

Man, i loved Tennant SO MUCH. He was a great Doctor and his three seasons were THE BOMB. Also...DO YOU KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IS TO RESUME THREE SEASONS INTO ONLY ONE POSTER? Ofcourse you don't! Because you have self respect and when your mind tells you to do crazy things you just go: NOOOPE. I don't have that luck xD

When Matt Smith became the new doctor i wasn't happy at all, i must confess. I was too emotional about David Tennant leaving and the lastadventures of the Doctor and all that to really appreciate Smith, but, little by little, i started to really like Smith's take on the last timelord and now he's my favourite doctor so far!

Cartoon Style Evolution of Stanley Kubrick's Movies

Director Stanely Kubrick made some incredible films in his career, and here's a wonderful cartoon style illustration that pays tribute to the director and several of the films that he made. The piece was created by artist Jeff Victor who had this to say about it,

My newest evolution is is a little different. It's a tribute to some of the best films by legendary director Stanley Kubrick. I recently saw the LACMA exhibit of Kubrick's films here in LA, and it was stunning. The original props, the annotated screenplays, his original director's chair- what a treasure trove of film geek goodies!

I've enjoyed all of the films that Kubrick has made, but if I had to choose only one as my favorite, it would have to be The Shining, which is one of my favorite horror films of all time. What would you say your favorite Kubrick film is?

Here's a crazy cool Doctor Who fan illustration featuring an alphabet of death! The illustrations are based on Edward Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies, which is a very twisted alphabet book that describes the eerie, gruesome, and unfortunate fates of children. Deviant Art user Eat Toast created this fantastic alternative version of that in which includes some classic deaths from the Doctor Who series. Click the image to enlarge!

THE HOBBIT - Freeman and Cumberbatch Discuss Smaug

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch talk about the Dragon Smaug, who plays a big role in the next chapter of The Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug. We got a fun teasing look at the character at the end of An Unexpected Journey, and now we have a little insight into what we can expect from the character in the next movie! Here's what Freeman had to say about playing in gold,

I'm Scrooge McBaggins. It's about a million pieces. It's the biggest pile of gold I've ever seen! Well, obviously - I'm not used to hanging out in big piles of gold! They're all fake, obviously, but it was a big eff-off pile of gold made it very hard to walk on.

As you know that gold is guarded by Smaug the Terrible, and he's played by Cumberbatch who says he never got to work with his Sherlock co-star on the set. He also talks a little bit about when Bilbo interacts with Smaug,

We weren't in the same room together. If Martin had been there, I would have wanted to play off him, but there are size issues. Smaug is bigger than the Hobbit - I think I can say that! This isn't the riddles scene. It's slightly different, it's intricate. Smaug doesn't engage with the Hobbit the same way as Smeagol does. Smeagol gets drawn in, whereas Smaug is on much more of an ego trip. He likes to feel dominant at all times, and because of what he's capable of, he is.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is set to be released on December 13th, 2013! I love the first Hobbit film, and I already can't wait to see the next one!

MASS EFFECT 3: If Liara Were Human, She Might Look Like This

While I actually kind of dig the blue skin of the Asari, I'm sure there are many out there who always wondered what Liara would look like in a more human complexion. Well, that might have been answered by Eddy Shinjuku (aka Class34 on Deviant Art).

Eddy has done a really fantastic job at nailing Liara's likeness, especially in the eyes. He made it clear that this was more of an emotional impression of her, but truth be told I think it's pretty spot on. I love the homage to her natural hair/head state in the braids, and it's a nice touch to have the freckles there as well. Overall it's a really fantastic but rather unsettling piece of art. Not unsettling in a creepy way, just in a "takes some getting used to" kind of way. After 3 games, I'm just so used to seeing her more Asari features, so it's odd to see her in a more human form.  That said, I would be interested to see a human version of some of the other oddball Mass Effect characters, like Thane and Wrex. Pretty cool work here, so if you like it then make sure to check out his gallery for more.

A new story trailer has been released for the highly anticipated game, Aliens: Colonial Marines. What's great about this trailer is it features Michael Beihn's Corporal Hicks from James Camon's Aliens. The character is shown in a recorded video message warning the other space Marines about the dangers of Hadley's Hope

The game is supposed to serve as a direct sequel to the movie Aliens. This is the sequel that hopefully fans of the films have been waiting for. I'd like to forget that Alien 3 ever happened because it was such a waste. I don't blame director David Fincher, I blame FOX. The game looks like it's going to be great though! The gameplay looks like it's going to be a lot of fun, and I'm excited to see how the story plays out! It might also give us some more answers on what might have happened between Aliens and Alien 3.

Aliens: Colonial Marines will be released on the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC on February 13th, 2013. Here's the trailer...

Bruce Willis' fifth Die Hard film looks like it has some promise. It's definitely going to be incredibly action packed! I just hope it has that same great tone that the first three films had. A Good Day to Die Hard was directed by John Moore, and I think he might have pulled off something really cool. The movie will be released on Valentines Day February 14th, 2013! Will you be taking your date to see it?!

Since the first "Die Hard" in 1988, John McClane has found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, with the skills and attitude to always be the last man standing, making him enemy #1 for terrorists the world over. Now, McClane faces his greatest challenge ever, this time on an international stage, when his estranged son Jack is caught up in the daring prison escape of a rogue Russian leader, and father and son McClane must work together to keep each other alive and keep the world safe for democracy.

Top 10 Most Pirated Films of 2012

Here's the list of 2012's top ten most pirated films of the year, which was compiled by Torrent Freak. I'm not a big fan pirating movies, I'd rather watch stuff on the big screen or on Blu-ray. I recently read an interesting article about pirated movies, and how a study showed that it actually helped the box office instead of hurt it, explaining that it's a way a marketing the film. Looking at the numbers of the films listed, they still look liked they did pretty well at the box office. There's some movies like Project X that aren't really movies that need to be watched on the big screen, but there's still ways to watch it without illegally downloading the film.

Looking back at some of the past years most pirated movies, the download numbers are actually going down. The top pirated movie in 2011 was Fast Five with over 9.2 million. The top movie this year was Project X with 8,720,000, followed by Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and more! Check out the full list below!

1. Project X - 8,720,000 Downloads - Worldwide Gross: $100,931,865

New PACIFIC RIM Photo Featuring Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi

Legendary Pictures has released a new photo from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. It doesn't show off any of the giant robots or monsters, but it does give us a look at the characters Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) having a discussion in what looks to be a control room. I'm so excited to see more of the awesomeness this movie has to offer!

The movie hits theaters on July 12th, 2013, and here's the synopsis:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Want to watch the trailer for the film again? Of course you do! Here ya go!
