How to Make the Cubano Sandwiches From Jon Favreau's CHEF

Jon Favreau's 2014 movie Chef is an under-appreciated movie. It's a much smaller film than Favreau's big studio efforts, but that's the point: the entire thing is a metaphor for making the kind of low-budget, homegrown films that inspire passion, as opposed to just churning out a product with an assembly line mentality.

Binging with Babish is back with a new how-to episode of his web series, and this time he's revealing how to make the delicious-looking Cubano sandwiches that appear in Favreau's film. Take a look:

THE DARK TOWER - Trailer Reaction Video - CinemaCon 2017

We got to see the first official footage from the features film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower at CinemaCon, and this movie looks freakin' spectacular! As a fan of the novels, I couldn't be more excited. We talk about the footage we saw in the reaction video above that you can watch.

The Dark Tower series tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum.  It is the heart of all worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it.

We've already seen a few photos from the film featuring Idris Elba as The Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, and Matthew McConaughey as The Man in Black. There was even a trailer that leaked online but was never officially released. I loved what I saw in the trailer, and I imagine we will see an officially released trailer soon.

The film is being directed by Nikolaj Arcel. It stars Idris Elba as The Gunslinger, Roland Deschain; Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers; Matthew McConaughey as The Man in Blac;, Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Tirana; Fran Kranz (The Cabin in the Woods) as Pimli, the right hand man of Randall Flagg; Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen); Katheryn Winnick (Vikings) and Claudia Kiim (Avengers: Age of Ultron).

The Dark Tower hits theaters this summer on July 28. To catch up on all of our Dark Tower news, click here.

Robert Rodriguez Is Set to Direct an Animated Film Based on the Toy Line UGLY DOLLS

Robert Rodriguez is starting to load the film projects on his plate. He's currently in production on Battle Angel; it was announced a few days ago that he would be directing the Escape From New York Remake; and today we've learned that he's also directing an animated film called Ugly Dolls for STX Entertainment, which is based on the toy line.

This would be Rodriguez's first animated feature film. I'm not really that familiar with the Ugly Doll toy brand, but it's a line of plush dolls featuring strange and colorful creatures. Here's a little explanation of what Ugly Dolls is trying to accomplish with their brand:

The brand is distinguished by its definition of the word "ugly." In the "uglyverse," "ugly" means unique and special, something that we should be celebrating, something that makes us different, and never hiding the "twists or turns" which make us who we are, both inside and out.

I really like that point of view on the word ugly. It's pretty cool that they are giving that word a positive spin.

The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on May 10, 2019, and it seems like a project that Rodriguez will have some fun with.

Watch: ROGUE ONE Shots Compared with the Original STAR WARS Trilogy

One of the big selling points for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was that director Gareth Edwards was supposed to bring a hand-held feel to the action and really make us feel like we were in a war movie on the ground level in the Star Wars universe. How much he succeeded or failed in that department is up for debate, but this video comparison from editor Zackery Ramos-Taylor (via The Playlist) shows that there are certainly some purposeful similarities between the new movie and what audiences loved from the original trilogy.

Ride or Die with a New Featurette for THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS

The Fate of the Furious looks like the most unhinged movie of the franchise so far, and I'm obviously looking forward to watching it. On one hand, I desperately want to watch every sliver of new footage that's released, but on the other, these are the kinds of movies that work really well watching their craziest moments play out in context on the big screen for the first time during the actual movie itself. What's a Fast fan to do?

Screw it. I'm watching this new featurette, and you can do the same if you want. The choice is yours. I wonder what those Fast & Furious bros trying to get the Paul Walker statue erected think about this?

Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg Want to Make a MILE 22 Film Trilogy and I Want to See it

Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have been attached to this Mile 22 project since 2015. It was also announced in the initial report that Ronda Rousey and Iko Uwais (The Raid) would be joining them on their filmmaking journey.

Well, it was announced today that the film is moving forward and that they are looking to turn this story into a full trilogy. This is also a film that Wahlberg wants to define his career.

If you're not familiar with the story, it follows a CIA agent (Wahlberg) stationed in Indonesia who is tasked with transporting a compromised informant (Rousey) from the center of the city to a getaway plane at an airport 22 miles away. While en route, they must battle corrupt police, criminal overlords and heavily armed locals, all hell-bent on taking them out before they reach their plane.

Sounds like a hell of an intense and entertaining film! During the STX Entertainment presentation at CinemaCon, Berg hyped the film a bit saying:

“Mark and I have made three films now that are pretty heavy, to put it mildly. For us, to do Mile 22 and something that’s fictional, and what we hope to be an intelligent, adult action film that’s got a lot of muscle and intensity…It’s a piece of fiction we’re very excited about it. We’re coming at you with a big ass action movie.”

Berg and Wahlberg have made some great films together that include Lone Survivor, Patriots Day, and Deepwater Horizon. They were all great! So, of course, I'm up for another project from this creative team.

If everything goes as planned this story will be a trilogy of films. This is exciting for Walhberg because a film like this will give him his defining moment as an action hero. He explains:

“I’ve been able to make a lot of different movies in a lot of different genres, and I still don’t feel like I have the movie role that really kind of defines ‘me.’ When I say me and my body of work, I’m really hoping this is the thing. I’m hoping the first thing you think of when you think Mark Wahlberg is Mile 22.”

There are no other details on the film or when it will be released, but it sounds like it's going to be a great action-packed film project worth looking forward to!

Review: SHALLOW WATER Is a Lean, Mean, Brutally Awesome Monster Movie

Sandy Collora, the talented filmmaker and artist who has brought us the sci-fi film Hunter Prey and the legendary fan film Batman Dead End has an awesome new short film he's directed called Shallow Water.

This is an original creature feature production has been a passion project of the filmmaker for years. After years of pressing forward and never giving up, he finally managed to raise the money he needed to develop it through a Kickstarter campaign that he launched.

I’ve been a fan of Collora’s work since I first saw Batman Dead End at a time when fan films and the internet were in their infancy. Over the years I’ve followed his career, and Shallow Water might just be one of his greatest accomplishments.

I had the opportunity to watch an early screening of Shallow Water, and I freakin’ loved it! I watch a lot of short films, that’s something I’m just into doing, and I’m also a big fan of creature features, which is a genre that we don’t see a lot of these days. So watching a film like Shallow Water was a real treat.

review-shallow-water-is-a-lean-mean-brutally-awesome-monster-movie33

When it comes to the story, all I’m going to tell you is that it follows a woman on the run while she's being hunted down by a gnarly creature from the depths of the sea.

Shallow Water is an incredibly made love letter to creature features. Seeing a film like this inspires hope that this could reinvigorate the genre and get it back into the main stream. If there’s anyone who could usher in that reinvigoration of classic creature feature cinema, it’s Colora, who has dedicated his life to the craft of design and practical effects.

The movie starts off strong with an intensity that doesn’t let go until the film ends. It’s a fast-paced film with zero dialogue, but the story is beautifully told through its stunning shots and visuals that were captured by Cinematographer Edward A. Gutentag. I also have to mention that the musical score created for the film was so powerful and bold. It really tied the whole film together. I loved it!

review-shallow-water-is-a-lean-mean-brutally-awesome-monster-movie55

One of the things I enjoyed most about it was how it plays with its audience as it only teases the creature throughout the first half of the film. It keeps the tension growing as this woman is desperately trying to survive. Then there's the big payoff when the creature is revealed in all its awesome glory.

I want to reiterate that this movie was done with all in-camera practical effects and this is such an incredibly cool creature design! Over the years I’ve seen some art from the film and a few photos, but seeing it come to life like this was such a treat.

Collora did an incredible job crafting this film. Shallow Water is a masterpiece. It's a lean, mean, brutally awesome monster movie. By the time the film ended I was left wanting more! I would have loved to see a full feature length film of this, and I can only image what Collora could do if he actually had a real decent-sized budget to work with.

review-shallow-water-is-a-lean-mean-brutally-awesome-monster-movie66

We need more films like this from passionate filmmakers like Collora! As you know there's a lack of creativity and originality in Hollywood. It's just full of remakes, reboots, and sequels. I see Hollywood giving young filmmakers like Gareth Edwards (Rogue One) and Neil Blomkamp (District 9) these opportunities. Collora is one of those rare hardworking talented filmmakers that can help bring Hollywood out of this slump of unoriginality. It's crazy that he's never had a real opportunity to do this after all he's done!

Hopefully, someone gives him a chance because I know he would do great things and help usher in a new era of original film content. I can't wait for you to get a chance to see this movie! It will be making its big premiere at Monsterpolooza next month.

Westworld actor Louis Herthum, who played Dolores' father on the series, has been upgraded to a series regular for Season 2. The news comes from Deadline, who says we should see more of Peter Abernathy (Dolores' father) and his broken robot psyche in Season 2. I'm excited to see how Peter becomes a bigger part of the show, as I did not see his character becoming a bigger part of the plot. I'm also excited to see how his mental break plays into his character on the series.

Westworld will return to HBO sometime in 2018.

This movie looks terrifyingly awesome! I love everything that I'm seeing in this trailer, and this movie is going to scare the shit out of people! I want to see more!

The film is based on the novel by Stephen King, whose story recalls a promise made twenty-eight years ago that forces seven adults to reunite in Derry, Maine, where as teenagers they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Johnny Depp to Play Crazy Anti-Virus Software Mogul John McAfee in New Movie

$

For anyone who really wanted a movie about John McAfee, the anti-virus software mogul who basically went balls to the wall crazy in Belize, I have some very good news. Someone's going to make a movie about it. The movie will be about the time Wired magazine writer Joshua Davis went to visit McAfee and McAfee was just all sorts of crazy, holed up in a compound with teenage girls in bikinis and bath salts. Lots of bath salts. And not for taking baths.

The movie is to star Johnny Depp as John McAfee, which sounds like a good fit. Most of my favorite Depp roles are him on drugs, most famously as Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who wrote Bad Santa and I Love You Phillip Morris, and it will be written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who recently wrote the miniseries The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

I am excited about this. It can often be said that truth is stranger than fiction, and if anyone can prove that true, it's John McAfee. The movie will be titled King of the Jungle. No release date has been announced, but we will deliver more news as it comes. For more about John McAfee, check out the documentary about his life called Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee.
