A JOHN WICK Prequel Series Is Being Considered by Lionsgate

a-john-wick-prequel-series-is-being-considered-by-lionsgate-social.jpg

I love the world that was created around Keanu Reeves' character John Wick. There's never a dull moment as it seems like there's always somebody who is ready for an ass-kicking. John Wick: Chapter 2 has yet to be released, but director Chad Stahelski and screenwriter Derek Kolstad have a lot of stories to tell in this world with this character. We have no idea how many chapters there will be in this franchise, but one thing that Lionsgate is actually considering is a prequel TV series!

During a recent press event for John Wick: Chapter 2, Stahelski revealed the news to /Film, saying:

"Well, we’re not doing a prequel [with Chapter 2]. We wanted to, it just didn’t fit quite where we’re at…. We basically almost have a prequel written, but we’d save that for other aspects of the property. Lionsgate is very interested in doing a John Wick TV show, and that seems very appealing to us, to give those creative ideas to that entity, because I think in TV you could really expand on what that is, and greater than we could in just a two-hour film. We’d like to wrap-up the story we’re telling now and maybe save all our prequel ideas and impossible task ideas for that medium."

So not only is Lionsgate on board for a prequel series, but so are Stahelski and Kolstad. I'd love to see John Wick explored in a TV series. There's so much more story they could tell with a series and so much more brutal action they could show off. It's obviously too early to tell if they would want Reeves to come back and reprise his role, but with the how much better TV is these days, attracting big name stars and directors, who's to say Reeves wouldn't at least consider doing at least a limited series if that's the direction the creative team wants to go? We know that he loves the character, but does he love the character enough to come back and play John Wick for TV? I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Of course, if it's a prequel series, they might want to explore a much younger version of Wick.

Hopefully, somewhere down the line, this whole John Wick prequel series idea moves beyond just talk and into development because I want to see it happen. What are your thoughts on a possible John Wick series?

Black Manta Has Been Cast in James Wan's AQUAMAN and Nicole Kidman Is in Talks to Join

$

Last year it was rumored that Black Manta would be one of the main villains in James Wan's Aquaman. That has now been confirmed as the studio has cast Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the role. That name probably doesn't ring a bell for many of you, but he's a talented young actor who starred in Netflix’s Baz Luhrmann series The Get Down. Nicole KIdman is also in early talks to play Aquaman's mother.

Abdul-Mateen beat out a bunch of other young actors gunning for the role. Wan and the studio obviously saw something in him that no one else had. He will join Jason Momoa, who is taking on the role of Aquaman; Amber Heard as Mera; Willem Dafoe as Aquaman’s advisor, scientist Dr. Vulko; and Patrick Wilson, who will play Orm, a villain who is also Aquaman’s half-brother.

For those of you not familiar with Black Manta, he's like the Batman of the ocean. He has no superhuman powers or abilities. He has just developed several skills to near-perfection. Some of these skills include strength, stamina, agility, fighting, leadership, strategy, intelligence, and even mechanical engineering. He’s created several of his own vehicles and weaponry. He’s also incredibly wealthy thanks to all the money he's made through treasure hunting over the years.

He also wears a diving suit that allows him to survive in the water for long periods of time in extreme depths. Here are some additional details on his suit:

It insulates him against the cold and protects him from pressure changes. It is completely waterproof and bulletproof, and is so completely sealed that it cannot be entered even at the atomic level. It also grants him a level of superhuman strength and durability, allowing him to survive major traumatic injuries. It greatly increases his underwater mobility, primarily through the use of some sort of diver propulsion vehicle, and allows him to leap great heights when shooting out of water. It is also effective as a means of camouflage in dark water. He wears a distinctive manta-shaped helmet with two large eyes that allow for infrared and scope vision, as well as powerful optic blasts capable of hurting or killing metahumans. His helmet connects to an oxygen system that allows him to breathe underwater indefinitely. It also protects his head from trauma.

I like this character because I think he's got some interesting qualities, and I think Abdul-Mateen will be great in the role. The actor was actually one of the finalists to take on the role of Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo spin-off movie that he lost to Donald Glover. It's good to see that his talents still landed him a big role in a high-profile movie.

As for Aquaman's mother, her name is Atlanna, and she comes from royalty in the kingdom of Atlantis. She leaves Atlantis to be with a lighthouse keeper she falls in love with. Together they have Aquaman, who grows up to be a bridge between the two worlds of land and sea. Kidman's a great actress, and Warner Bros. would be lucky to get her if they can.

Leonardo DiCaprio to Star in and Produce a Crime Thriller Called THE BLACK HAND

Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star in and produce a crime thriller called The Black Hand, which is based on a book of the same name written by Stephan Talty. The film is based on a true story and is set up at Paramount Pictures. This sounds like an awesome story that would make for a great film.

The story is set in 1903, and DiCaprio will take on the lead role of Joe Petrosino, "a NYPD cop who goes after the ruthless gang (with the calling card black hand) that migrated from Italy to America. The thugs kidnapped people and then extorted money from their families. They were loathed by law-abiding Italian families who were frightened, but nevertheless helped Petrosino behind the scenes."

This seems like it's a great role for DiCaprio to take on, and this wouldn't be the first time he's played a law enforcement officer in a movie. It's one of those kinds of roles that he fits right into and has played incredibly well in films such as Shutter Island, J. Edgar, and The Departed

Here's a more detailed story summary from the book that the film is based on:

Beginning in the summer of 1903, an insidious crime wave filled New York City, and then the entire country, with fear. The children of Italian immigrants were kidnapped, and dozens of innocent victims were gunned down. Bombs tore apart tenement buildings. Judges, senators, Rockefellers, and society matrons were threatened with gruesome deaths. The perpetrators seemed both omnipresent and invisible. Their only calling card: the symbol of a black hand. The crimes whipped up the slavering tabloid press and heated ethnic tensions to the boiling point. Standing between the American public and the Black Hand’s lawlessness was Joseph Petrosino. Dubbed the “Italian Sherlock Holmes,” he was a famously dogged and ingenious detective, and a master of disguise. As the crimes grew ever more bizarre and the Black Hand’s activities spread far beyond New York’s borders, Petrosino and the all-Italian police squad he assembled raced to capture members of the secret criminal society before the country’s anti-immigrant tremors exploded into catastrophe. Petrosino’s quest to root out the source of the Black Hand’s power would take him all the way to Sicily—but at a terrible cost.

I love these kinds of stories, and I can't wait to see this one!

Nerf has unveiled the latest addition to their arsenal of blasters. It’s the fully automatic Rival Nemesis MXVII-10K which can blast out 100 rounds of Nerf foam balls at 70 MPH! This thing is definitely one of the most badass guns that they’ve come out with.

One of the best things about this gun that the other Rival guns don’t have is that you can quickly dump all of the ammo into a roomy 100-round hopper, which also allows you to continuously reload even while you’re still firing shots.

The new gun comes in red and blue and will be available for purchase something in the fall. It will cost around $100, which is a small price to pay for a little bit of awesomeness that you can brag to your friends about.

Lois & Clark star Teri Hatcher is once again joining the DC universe, but this time she will be coming in to play a villain. She's set to appear in season two of Supergirl, and all we know about her character as this point is that it's a "mysterious role that will become the new major villain of the season."

She joins her former Lois & Clark co-star Dean Cain, who plays Kara's adoptive father in the series. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg released the following statement expressing his excitement about getting Hatcher on board:

"No offense to any of the wonderful actresses who have also played the part, but Teri Hatcher is my all-time favorite Lois Lane. To have her come back to the SuperWorld in a completely different part is an unbelievable gift to me, [executive producer] Greg [Berlanti], and the fans."

This is the second time that Hatcher has joined a CW super show. She previously appeared on the tenth season of Smallville as Ella Lane, the mother of Lois. Joining Supergirl also reunites Hatcher with former Desperate Housewives co-stars Mehcad Brooks, who plays Jimmy Olsen a.k.a. Guardian, and Brenda Strong, who plays Lillian Luthor.

There are no hints of who the villain might be, but you can make your best guesses in the comment section below!

BACK TO THE FUTURE Tribute Video Compares Every Version of Hill Valley

If you're a fan of Back to the Future, you're gonna enjoy this great little video essay that compares all five versions of Hill Valley that Marty McFly found himself in throughout the trilogy. The video gives us a side-by-side comparison highlighting the visual similarities of McFly's time spent in the town square. Anyone familiar with these movies know that the visual parallels from film to film are nothing new or surprising, but it's still cool to see them all playing side-by-side together. The video was created by Lost In The Movies, and I think you'll get a kick out of it.

THE RATS OF NIMH Film Project Is Finally Moving Forward With a Director

A new big screen adaption of the classic Robert C. O’Brien children’s book Mrs. Frisby & The Rats of Nimh has been in development at various studios since 2009. In 2015 the rights landed at MGM studios, and they've been developing it as a live-action and CG-animated hybrid film. They now have a director on board to take the film into production.

The studio hired James Madigan to the direct the film from a script written by Michael Berg. This will be Madigan's first time directing a film. So what did he do before he landed this big directing gig? He was a VFX supervisor and a second unit director. He's worked on films such as Iron Man 2, The Da Vinci Code, HBO's Rome, and most recently Jason Statham's Meg. I'm not sure how this guy landed a major directing gig like this, but we'll soon see if he's got a talent for it.

This will be the second time Mrs. Frisby & The Rats of Nimh will have been adapted as a feature film. The first adaptation was the 1982 animated film The Secret of NIMH, which was directed by Don Bluth. I grew up that movie and loved it! I hope that this new adaptation does the story justice. If you're not familiar with the story, here's the description:

Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with four small children, is faced with a terrible problem. She must move her family to their summer quarters immediately, or face almost certain death. But her youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia and must not be moved. Fortunately, she encounters the rats of NIMH, an extraordinary breed of highly intelligent creatures, who come up with a brilliant solution to her dilemma. And Mrs. Frisby in turn renders them a great service.

If you're a fan of the hit anime series Sword Art Online, then there's no doubt you're excited about the anime movie that's been in development called Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale. The official website for the film has been releasing all kinds of trailers and images for the film. I've included the two most recent trailers for you to check out along with all of the previously released trailers in case you missed them.

There's a good amount of great action and fight sequences in the trailers for you to enjoy, and they also offer a look at the new villain being introduced in the film. Here's the synopsis for the film:

In 2022, the world of virtual reality was upended by the arrival of a new invention from a genius programmer, Akihiko Kayaba, called NerveGear. It was the first full-dive system, and with it, came endless possibilities to VRMMORPGs.
In 2026, a new machine called the Augma is developed to compete against the NerveGear and its successor, the Amusphere. A next-gen wearable device, the Augma doesn't have a full-dive function like its predecessors. Instead, it uses Augmented Reality (AR) to get players into the game. It is safe, user-friendly and lets users play while they are conscious, making it an instant hit on the market. The most popular game on the system is “Ordinal Scale” (aka: OS), an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma.
Asuna and the gang have already been playing OS for a while, by the time Kirito decides to join them. They're about to find out that Ordinal Scale isn't all fun and games…

If you haven't watched Sword Art Online yet, it's definitely a series worth watching. It's got great storytelling, great characters, and some awesome action! It's definitely one of the most entertaining anime series currently running.

Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale is set to open in Japan on February 18th and will also screen in the US for a one-night event on March 9.

Daughter of CAPTAIN AMERICA Creator Says Character Use Okay for Protests And Rallies on Either Side

$

The daughter of Captain America creator Joe Simon says there's nothing wrong with using Captain America to express your political opinion one way or another. Melissa Groben spoke with THR regarding the recent use of the character at rallies and protests on both sides of the political spectrum and she said,

"Captain America has been around for a long time, so anytime there is any turmoil or unrest or disagreement, he pops up...We all find whatever we need in a particular character, whatever that may be. So, I can't say that the way anyone is using the character is wrong. If that's what they see in the character, then that's what works for them...What Captain America represents to my neighbor might be different than what he means to someone from three towns over."

As some of you may know, Groben points out that Captain America was created solely as a symbol of protest prior to the Americans entering WWII,

"Captain America was created while the Jews were being killed off in Europe, and my father, being Jewish, and Jack (Kirby), being Jewish, were enraged that America was not over there with our military strength...They created Captain America to go after Hitler because our country wouldn't go after Hitler. My father was very, very, very pro-America, pro-Jewish, he was very traditional, and it was a different world back then."

For me personally, I had always assumed Captain America was created alongside the war effort as a means of propaganda. To learn that he was more or less a protest showing "this is what America should do" paints the character in a different light for me!

I guess the main takeaway here is Captain America isn't left or right...he's a symbol of the American spirit and open to interpretation. So use him for what you will and feel justified in whatever way you want!

Here's Your First Look at the Riddler's Outfit in GOTHAM

Gotham returns in April, and with it comes The Riddler in his classic look! After two seasons of watching the evolution of Edward Nigma into full-blown villain, it's cool to see him finally wearing his classic villain ensemble! I appreciate that they didn't cheese it up with a ton of question marks as I don't think that would've fit the aesthetic of the show, but I wouldn't mind if they found a way to incorporate it down the road!

You can see his new look in more detail in the promo below. Are you liking the current state of Gotham? If you aren't watching I think you're really missing out! We're finally getting to see young Bruce Wayne kick some ass!

Liam Neeson Will Play a Snowplow Driver Hell-Bent on Revenge in HARD POWDER

Liam Neeson is set to slip back into a new movie role that he's become very accustomed to playing... a man who goes on a mission of revenge after his son is murdered.

The film is called Hard Powder, and according to THR, Neeson will play a character named Nels, "an upright snowplow driver in a glitzy Colorado ski town whose life is turned upside down when his son is murdered by the powerful local drug kingpin. He then seeks to dismantle the cartel, but his vengeful crusade sparks a turf war between a Viking gangster and a Native American mafia boss."

Neeson is sure to leave a trail of blood and death behind him in the beautiful rocky mountains. The film is actually a remake of Norwegian film called In Order of Disappearance, and the director of that film, Hans Petter Moland, is also going to direct Neeson in this new film.

Even though Neeson keeps making these movies, I still enjoy watching him kick ass in them! I just hope there's this one line of dialogue in the film, "Don't fuck with Mr. Plow!"

Check Out Three Minutes of RINGS

We have three fresh minutes of footage from the upcoming sequel to The Ring, Rings, and they're pretty much what you would expect! I'm not going to knock the film off of just three minutes of footage, but I was really hoping to see maybe a different angle this film would take as opposed to what looks like The Ring for a new generation.

In the first clip, we have a guy who watched the film and didn't make a copy. That means he's screwed, and the whole plane appears to be going down when it cuts off. I think it's hilarious that the girl in the video can somehow make it inside of a closed circuit television screen!

The second clip gives us the nostalgic feel of the first film when someone watches the tape and gets a disturbing call. Minus the iPhone it feels as though it was lifted from the original film!

Rings will be in theaters this Friday. I'm not sure I'll be seeing it if there's nothing new to the story, will you?

BLADE RUNNER 2049 Director Denis Villeneuve Officially Set to Direct DUNE

Last month we learned that Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival director Denis Villeneuve was in talks to direct the new big screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune. It's now been confirmed that he's officially signed on to helm the project set up at Legendary Pictures. The news came from Brian Herbert, the son of Frank Herbert, who posted the following on Twitter:

This has been a dream project that Villeneuve has been pursuing, but he didn't think it would actually happen. He previously talked about his dream of directing Dune and said:

"I’m always looking for sci-fi material, and it’s difficult to find original and strong material that’s not just about weaponry. A longstanding dream of mine is to adapt Dune, but it’s a long process to get the rights, and I don’t think I will succeed."

Well, he has succeeded, and now we just have to wait and see what he ends up doing with this classic property. Villeneuve is a talented director, and I trust that he'll give us something great, something fans of Dune will be excited about.

Dune is set in a distant future and follows Paul Atreides, "whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis."

Intense Trailer for BATES MOTEL Season 5 Offers First Look at Rihanna as Marion Crane

A&E has released a fantastic new trailer for the fifth and final season of Bates Motel, and we are in for one hell of an intense season! The new trailer offers up a ton of crazy and exciting new footage from the upcoming season including our first real look at Rihanna as Marion Crane. It looks like this final season will end up taking us through the events of Alfred Hitchcock's film, and it will be interesting to see how they portray the legendary shower scene. We know it's going to be in the series, but will it take a different approach than Hitchcock's vision or will it be a shot-for-shot remake of what Hitchcock did? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

This is a great trailer, and I'm so excited to see this series come to a close. I've also included a full synopsis that teases Norman's descent into madness.

Bates Motel Season 5 concludes the contemporary prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Over the course of five years, the series has provided fans with an intimate look into the unraveling of Norman Bates’ psyche. Fans watched as Norman’s dangerous transformation came full circle when he methodically murdered his beloved mother, Norma, in the final gut-wrenching episodes of season four. Now, Bates Motel Season 5 picks up almost two years later and finds Norman (Freddie Highmore), a grown man now, living a double life. Publicly he’s a happy and well-adjusted member of the White Pine Bay community, but at home Norman struggles; his violent blackouts continue to increase as ‘Mother’ (Vera Farmiga) threatens to take over his mind completely. Meanwhile, Dylan Massett (Max Thierot) and Emma Decody (Olivia Cooke), since leaving White Pine Bay, have been living their lives blissfully unaware of Norma’s death and Norman’s full on descent into psychosis. Unfortunately, for them, they will soon find themselves drawn back into Norman’s insanity, while a vengeful Alex Romero (Nestor Carbonell), who is currently incarcerated for a perjury, hungers for a chance to destroy his stepson and avenge the murder of his one true love, Norma Bates.
New faces find their way to the Bates Motel this season to further complicate Norman’s life and threaten to unearth his dark secrets. Viewers will finally meet the iconic Marion Crane played by Rihanna. In addition, a new couple in town, Madeleine Loomis, played by Isabelle McNally (House of Cards) and her husband Sam Loomis, played by Austin Nichols (The Walking Dead, Ray Donovan), as well as Sheriff Dana Greene, played by Brooke Smith (Grey’s Anatomy, Ray Donovan) become entangled in Norman’s life causing a chain of events that could blow the lid off Norman’s secret life. Lastly, fans will be greeted by familiar faces when Caleb Calhoun (Kenny Johnson) and Chick Hogan (Ryan Hurst) return with agendas of their own.

Bates Motel season five premieres Monday, February 20th at 10:00pm on A&E, and I can't wait!

HBO Is Developing a Movie About the Making of THE GODFATHER

HBO Films is developing an intriguing new movie called Francis & the Godfather, and it tells the behind-the-scenes story of Francis Ford Coppola's journey to adapt Mario Puzo's The Godfather into a feature film in 1972.

The Godfather is one of the of my favorite films of all time and is considered a masterpiece by a lot of film buffs. I took a course in college that focused mostly on The Godfather, so a film that tells the story of the making of the film is definitely something that interests me.

Francis & the Godfather tells the behind-the-scenes story of the film’s creation, from Coppola joining the project to the casting of Al Pacino and Marlon Brando to dealings with the real-life New York mafia.

The script for Francis & the Godfather comes from Andrew Farotte, who is currently revising his original screenplay that appeared on the 2015 Black List. The production also brought in Peter Bart to consult on the project. He was the executive at Paramount Pictures who first optioned Puzo’s novel and worked closely with Robert Evans and Coppola on the development of The Godfather

There's no other information on the project, but I'm curious to see how this project comes together and what kind of behind-the-scenes stories it tells us.

JUSTICE LEAGUE Screenwriter Chris Terrio Took a Crack at THE BATMAN Script Then Affleck Left

Up until this point, we've only heard that Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns have been working on the script for WB's new solo Batman movie. We knew Affleck wanted to get the script right before he committed to directing the film, and then earlier this week we learned that he dropped out as the director.

Affleck gave a statement saying that it was for the good of the film, but I can't help but think there's a little more going on behind the scenes that no one is telling us. Judging from everything that Affleck has been saying about the film he's been developing, he left because he isn't happy with the way the script and story have been coming along.

According to Deadline, it even came to the point where Affleck and the studio brought in Justice League and Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio to write up a draft of the script based on what Affleck and Johns came up with. It wasn't until after Terrio turned in his draft that Affleck up and left the project. That doesn't sound promising.

Affleck is still set to star in the film and produce it, but the studio is now on the hunt for a director to replace him. Some of the rumored names on the studio's list include George Miller, Matt Reeves, Gavin O'Connor, Denis Villeneuve, and Matt Ross. Hopefully the creative team they bring together for the film will be able to give fans the amazing film that they want to see.

The film will also star Joe Manganiello as Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. There's no official release date yet for The Batman, but it will most likely hit theaters in 2018.
