Mysterious and Intriguing Trailer for '80s Set TV Series WHEN THE STREET LIGHTS GO ON

0
0

I've got a trailer for you to watch for a great looking pilot for a TV series called When the Street Lights Go On. The pilot was screened at Sundance, and it seems like a lot of people who saw it loved it. The series doesn't have a home and is currently being shopped around to interested networks. Apparently, it was originally produced for Hulu, but for some reason they decided to pass on it.

When the Street Lights Go On has a very mysterious vibe, and it looks incredibly intriguing. I was sold on it after watching this trailer, and I hope some network or streaming service picks it up because I'd totally watch it! It kind of has a Stranger Things kind of tone but without all the supernatural stuff.

The series was created by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays In The Picture, Chicago 10) and was executive produced by the team of Mr. Robot. This is the plot synopsis:

In the summer heat of 1983, a string of unusual occurrences in a small Illinois town culminate with the shocking murders of a popular high school girl and her teacher. When a fellow student, and neighbor, discovers the bodies while riding his bike home one night, the quiet suburban lives of the town’s residents are irrevocably shaken.

Watch the trailer and let us know if it looks like something you'd be interested in checking out.

FANTASTIC BEASTS Deleted Scene Features the Ilvermorny School Anthem

A deleted scene from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has been released online, and it features the characters Tina (Katherine Waterson) and Queenie (Alison Sudol) singing the Ilvermorny School anthem to Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler).

I enjoyed Fantastic Beasts, and I'm excited to where the story goes in the upcoming films. This deleted scene doesn't really offer any insight into the story, but it is a charming moment between these four characters. I imagine the scene was cut out because of pacing and the fact that it doesn't really do anything to move the story forward.

If you're curious to hear the Ilvermorny school anthem, check it out below!

Listen to The Mountain Goats' Song Inspired by Rian Johnson's STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

Before we start, here's a little primer of the key players who appear in this story. Director Rian Johnson — he of Brick, The Brothers Bloom, Looper, and the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi — has a history with indie folk band The Mountain Goats. Johnson directed the band's concert film, The Life of The World to Come, as well as the music video for their song "Woke Up New." Check that out below:

OK, now that we're all on the same page, Johnson tweeted a link to a new song from The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle that's inspired by Johnson's The Last Jedi. It's called "The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All The Other Jedi and Eats Their Bones," and it's just as ridiculous as it sounds. Once you hear the whole thing, you'll realize how funny it is that Johnson jokingly referred to it as "canon."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in theaters on December 15, 2017.

SPLINTER CELL Will Feel More Like "a Badass Tom Hardy Action Movie" Than a Video Game Movie

Ubisoft is currently developing numerous film projects and one of those projects, which was announced around the same time as Assassin's Creed, is Splinter Cell with Tom Hardy. After seeing Assassin's Creed, though, I'm worried about the rest of Ubisoft's slate of films.

I thought Assassin's Creed was one of the worst films I saw in 2016. It was such a big disappointment, but the bad reviews and lackluster box office performance isn't going to stop Ubisoft from trying again with Splinter Cell

Hardy is set to take on the role of Sam Fisher in the film, and in a recent interview with Collider, producer Basil Iwanyk talks about what we can expect from the movie and says that it will feel more like a "badass, Tom Hardy action movie" than a video game movie:

"The challenge of making Splinter Cell interesting was we didn’t have this IP with a very specific backstory. That allowed us to make up our own world and really augment and fill out the characters. I don’t think one applies to the other because I don’t think our movie will feel like a movie that came out of a video game, I think it’ll feel like a badass, Tom Hardy action movie, which is what we wanted."

Splinter Cell is going to be a video game movie that's not really going to be a video game movie? Ok, we'll just have to wait and see how that plays out. Talk is cheap, so we'll just have to wait and see if they actually make a great badass Splinter Cell movie. I hope that they can pull it off and give us something amazing! Iwanyk then confirmed that a script is in place and they are waiting for Hardy's approval. Once they get that, the plan is to get production going.

"We’re definitely going to make it a hard PG-13. No, it’s not going to be like [John] Wick,’ but it’s going to be badass. The good and the bad news is that, obviously, the Bond movies have had a resurgence and the Jason Bourne movies are the Jason Bourne movies, so we’re trying to stay away from those movies in terms of tone, in terms of bad guys, in terms of settings. What’s a world that we haven’t seen yet? What’s an area of the world and a conflict that we haven’t really touched upon in movies in a long time, to make it feel fresh?"

I'm a fan of the Splinter Cell game franchise, but after being let down by Assassin's Creed, I don't want to get too excited about this. I do hope that they can deliver a great movie to the fans , though.

ROGUE ONE Star Diego Luna Set to Star in SCARFACE Remake as Director Antoine Fuqua Drops Out

Universal Pictures' remake of the classic gangster film Scarface has had a bit of a shake-up as director Antoine Fuqua has dropped out of the project. According to Variety, the reason is because Fuqua was getting pressure from Sony Pictures and Denzel Washington to get moving on developing The Equalizer sequel quickly. This caused some scheduling conflicts, so Fuqua had to drop out even though he tried to figure out a way to make it work.

Universal wants to get Scarface into production by spring, and they are currently meeting with potential directors to replace Fuqua. No names have been revealed on who any of these directors might be, but it looks like they have found their leading man.

Inside sources say that Rogue One star Diego Luna is attached to star in the movie. Luna is a solid actor, but let's face it, he's no Al Pacino. Personally, I don't know why they're remaking Scarface in the first place. The original 1983 film is a classic, and I don't know if a remake is something that these fans will warm up too. Scarface had a huge cultural impact on people.

Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter wrote the most recent draft of the script, and the film is described as a "reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films. The new film will be set in Los Angeles and will focus on a Mexican immigrant."

What do you all think of Luna taking on the lead role in the film? Do you think he's a good choice?

BACK TO THE FUTURE Trilogy Recapped as a Rap Song

Great Scott! The Warp Zone has recorded a rap song recapping Robert Zemeckis's beloved Back to the Future trilogy. I know you've all seen these movies a hundred times, but you might get a kick out of hearing Alan Silvestri's classic theme sampled for a rap song, as well as a variation of Huey Lewis and The News' iconic pop hit "The Power of Love" playing out under the verses.

Fans Rally Around Kevin Smith to Direct THE BATMAN and the Filmmaker Responds

Last night news broke that Ben Affleck stepped down as the director of The Batman for the good of the film. I was kind of disappointed with the news because I was looking forward to seeing Affleck take on the challenge.

The director's chair is now wide open for someone to come in and lead the film into glory or failure. After Affleck dropped out, some fans immediately started to rally behind Kevin Smith for the job. The guy has a long history with comic books and even wrote the limited series Batman: The Widening Gyre. He has also recently been directing episodes of Supergirl and The Flash for The CW.

Smith also already shared two ideas for what he'd like to see happen with the Batman solo film saying:

"I'm going to give you two versions. I was going to say Hush, because you get all the characters. In a world where DC is trying to launch the DC cinematic universe, this would be a way to do it and introduce all of Batman's rogues' gallery in one movie. So naturally, that's your money decision right here. But I'm not going to go studio, I'm going to go from the heart."

He then went on to say that he'd like to see a big screen adaptation of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and that it should be directed by Mad Max's George Miller:

"Now, this is a great combination of material and filmmaker. The man can direct....Give the story of the old Batman to the 70-year-old director who made the amazing-looking Fury Road. It's a no-brainer."

He's obviously got his own vision of what The Batman film should be, but what does he think about taking on the challenge? He took to Twitter to give three reasons why it's impossible for him to direct it. He said:

"I'm flattered. But 3 things make me directing Batman impossible: 1) Haven't spoken to Ben in years. 2) I made @YogaHosers, 3) Common sense."

All valid points, but I would be curious to see what Smith would do with a big budget Batman movie. I doubt Warner Bros. shares that curiosity, though, and would never risk that kind of money on him. The thing is... what if he gave fans a completely badass Batman movie? I guess we'll never know.

This BLADE RUNNER Fan Film Looks Extraordinary

With the glut of amazing content to consume out there these days, it takes a lot for fan films to get my attention. It takes even more for a trailer for a fan film to truly pique my interest. John Fiorella's excellent Grayson managed to do that years ago, and now it's happening again with Slice of Life, a fan film set in the world of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner that looks incredibly professional and downright eerie with how closely it managed to capture some of the aspects of that cinematic world. io9 says that director Luka Hrgović and his team are looking to Kickstarter to raise the funds to complete the full 20-25 minute short film, so all we have for now is this trailer. But man, what a cool trailer. Check it out, and head to their official site for more info.

Mel Gibson and John Lithgow Looking to Join DADDY'S HOME 2

After the success of Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson is making a major comeback not only as a director, but as an actor as well. It seems like studios want to work with him again. Paramount Pictures just made an offer to the actor to star alongside Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in Daddy’s Home 2. The studio has made an offer to John Lithgow to join the party as well. Only time will tell if the two actors accept the offer.

THR points out that Gibson has not had a role in a "pure" major studio film since M. Night Shyamalan's thriller Signs, which was released back in 2002. They explain that most of his other movies between then and now "were made outside the studio system as execs and agents tried to steer clear of the actor-filmmaker."

I guess a film like Daddy's Home 2 is a start for the actor after being avoided by the studios for years. The first film had some funny moments. Wahlberg and Ferrell make a fun comedic team. As for who Gibson and Lithgow would play in the film, the report says:

Daddy’s Home 2 will once again see the two types of father figures — the strong alpha male and the sensitive caring type — go head to head, but in this one the palette is expanding to include an older generation. If offers are accepted and deals made, Gibson and Lithgow would be that older generation.

Gibson is an insanely talented filmmaker, and his latest film Hacksaw Ridge was nominated for six Academy Awards. Personally, I'd just like to see Gibson direct more movies, but if he is starting to land big major movie roles again, I guess he's doing something right.

I think it'd be fun to see him star alongside Ferrell, Wahlberg, and Lithgow in this movie, so hopefully he takes the gig.

Here's How Stan Lee Will Appear in THE DEFENDERS

Stan Lee will have a small cameo in the upcoming Netflix series The Defenders. Slashfilm reports that we should see the man who built Marvel as an NYPD police officer in a poster that reads something to the effect of "not all heroes wear capes." You can check out the picture (which we won't show here due to copyright by the photographer) right here

An in-person cameo would have been nice, but at age 94 we're seeing Lee step further and further from the public eye as he gets older and less able to travel. I'm fine with Lee retiring from Marvel film appearances in person if it means he can be more comfortable in his old age. I would hate to be working as much as he does at 94! The Defenders will premiere on Netflix mid 2017.

Give Your Wardrobe an Intergalactic Boost With This Death Star and TIE Fighter Tie

It's always useful to have a varied selection of ties in your wardrobe, and here's a new way to let your geek flag fly (with subtlety and class) at the office. ThinkGeek is selling a Star Wars-themed pin dot tie complete with Death Stars and TIE Fighters frozen in a sea of red space, and it's made of 100% silk. This officially-licensed piece looks pretty slick to me, and again, it's a nice way to class up your tie collection while not dipping into territory so ridiculous that you'd be embarrassed to wear it.

When you dress up in your Imperial best you want to have somewhere to be. You can't just look this fancy and do nothing but sit in your living quarters. No, no. You've got people to impress - hopefully Lord Vader because we aren't a fan of being on his bad side. Doesn't end well most days.

The Death Star & Tie Fighter Pin Dot Tie features a dark red tie and the Empire's bread and butter weapons - the Death Star and a TIE Fighter - in a black design. Make sure you're fighting that Rebel scum in your Sunday best. If you're going to blow up a planet, you might as well look good doing it!

You can pick one up for $54.99 here.

Hilarious But Dark Trailer for Danny McBride-Produced Film DONALD CRIED

0
0

There aren't too many guys who walk the line of Dark Comedy better than Jody Hill and Danny McBride. Both Eastbound And Down and Vice Principals were acclaimed for their use of mixing comedy with the dramatic and the outrageous, and Donald Cried looks to capture that same feel both shows pull off so well. Here's a description for the film...

Director/writer/star Kris Avedisian expertly deconstructs the contemporary obsession with the "man-child" in this darkly funny story about former childhood best friends who reconnect decades later in their working-class Rhode Island neighborhood. Peter Latang (Jesse Wakeman) left his childhood home to reinvent himself as a slick Wall Street mover and shaker. When he's forced to return home to bury his grandmother, he loses his wallet on the trip. Stranded and broke, Peter looks to the only person he can think of to help him out—his next-door neighbor and former childhood friend Donald (played by Avedisian). The ever-eccentric Donald hasn't changed a bit, and what starts as a simple favor turns into a long and unhinged van ride into their past. Avedisian’s pitch-perfect first feature is a brilliant twist on the family-reunion melodrama and the classic buddy comedy.

Early reviews for the film said it's an indie film at heart, but it has its moments and will keep you entertained. I have no doubt that with the guidance Avedisian had, I'll be on board with it. The film will show in theaters March 3rd.

James Cameron Defends TITANIC Ending, Says Mythbusters Are "Full of Shit"

0
0

James Cameron is one of the rare people in Hollywood who can freely speak his mind without fear of repercussions. He's directed the highest grossing movie of all time twice in his career (topping himself with Avatar), and you get the sense that even if he never made a movie again, he'd be just fine tinkering with submarines or developing camera technology until the day he died. (Incidentally, he's making a bunch more Avatar movies, so we probably won't have to worry about that situation occurring any time soon.)

One of the things he's had to speak out about tons of times since Titanic's release is the ending of the movie, in which Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) dies because he lets Rose (Kate Winslet) float on top of a door. Cameron has been a good sport about this in the past, teaming up with Mythbusters a few years ago to tackle the concept:

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Cameron addressed the "controversy" once again when the reporter asked whether there was room for both of them on the door:

[Laughs] We’re gonna go there? Look, it’s very, very simple: you read page 147 of the script and it says, “Jack gets off the board and gives his place to her so that she can survive.” It’s that simple. You can do all the post-analysis you want. So you’re talking about the Mythbusters episode, right? Where they sort of pop the myth? OK, so let’s really play that out: you’re Jack, you’re in water that’s 28 degrees, your brain is starting to get hypothermia. Mythbusters asks you to now go take off your life vest, take hers off, swim underneath this thing, attach it in some way that it won’t just wash out two minutes later—which means you’re underwater tying this thing on in 28-degree water, and that’s going to take you five to ten minutes, so by the time you come back up you’re already dead. So that wouldn’t work. His best choice was to keep his upper body out of the water and hope to get pulled out by a boat or something before he died. They’re fun guys and I loved doing that show with them, but they’re full of shit.

Classic Cameron. I love that guy.

Aaron Sorkin and THE SOCIAL NETWORK Examined in Cool Video

I love Aaron Sorkin. The West Wing, Newsroom, The Social Network...all of it. Sorkin's unique writing style and continuing structure have elevated him above most screenwriters in the same position and made him a familiar face in a profession that oftentimes doesn't come with as much fanfare as other film roles. Lessons From The Screenplay examines Sorkin's style and then breaks down how it can be imitated in the video below! I know I'm biased in loving his work, is there anyone who reads the site who can't stand him?

Watch THE LORD OF THE RINGS Cast Reunite to Reenact the Cave Troll Battle Scene

The Lord of the Rings trilogy will go down in history as one of the greatest and most epic film franchises of all time. As many of you know, the cast of the film became really close with each other and now all these years later many of them reunited for a little get-together. In the process, awesomely reenacted the cave troll fight scene, which you can watch below.

The little reunion includes Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Elijah Wood (Frodo), Dominic Monaghan (Merry), Billy Boyd (Pippin), and even Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn). Bloom posted the video on his Instagram, and Monaghan also shared a couple photos as well. Too bad Sean Astin couldn't join in on the fun. Enjoy the video and photos!

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Behind-the-Scenes Video Gives Us a Look Inside the New Series

0
0

CBS has started production on the highly anticipated series Star Trek: Discovery, and to celebrate the occasion, they've released a behind-the-scenes featurette that gives us a cool little glimpse at what they are developing. It includes video of the set, concept art, costumes, props, and more. It's actually kind of exciting!

“On March 11, 1964, Gene Roddenberry wrote three words on a blank page – 'Star Trek Is...'. What followed was half a century of stories, unbridled by the constraints of time or space, but always a reflection of what it means to be human.”

The road to bringing Star Trek: Discovery to life has begun. The story is set prior to the events of the original Star Trek series and will center around a new ship, new missions, and new characters that will inspire a new generation of fans.

The series will feature a fantastic cast that includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo. I've got high hopes for the series, and I hope CBS and their creative team can awesomely pull off what they are trying to accomplish.

Flaws Of DON'T BREATHE Revealed in NSFW Video

It's not too evident from the trailers, but Don't Breathe is an extremely violent and gross movie! Keep that in mind before you decide to play this latest edition of CinemaSins and risk getting fired or throwing up everywhere! Despite the nitpickiness of the video, I've heard nothing but great things about this film and can't wait to see it for myself!

George Miller Is Reportedly on a List of Five Potential Directors for THE BATMAN

0
0

As you all know by now, Ben Affleck has stepped down as the director for The Batman because it was too daunting a task for him to take on. He wanted to make sure that he was able to give everything he had to the character as an actor.

There's been a lot of discussion among fans over who will replace Affleck as the director. One possible name already leaked, and that was Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves. Thanks to Forbes, we now have four other names to add to the shortlist of directors that the studio is reportedly looking at.

Those directors include Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller, who has previously been in talks for other DC movies like the Man of Steel sequel. There's also Gavin O'Connor, who has directed films such as Miracle, Warrior and, most recently, The Accountant, which starred Affleck. The next person on the list is Denis Villeneuve, who recently directed the highly acclaimed film Arrival. Finally, there's Matt Ross, the director of Viggo Mortensen's Captain Fantastic

All of these are great and talented directors, and they each have their own unique styles which would work great for a Batman movie. If I had to choose one of these directors, though, it would have to be Miller, because I want to see what a George Miller Batman movie would be like! If he's available and willing, I hope Warner Bros. jumps on him!

WB hasn't confirmed any of these names, and even if they are on a list there's no guarantee that they'll end up choosing one of them. It could be someone completely different. Regardless, this is a strong list of talent, so the studio is going after someone with some strong directing skills, which is a plus.
