Michael Bay Is Developing a Sci-Fi Film Inspired by a Donald Trump Dystopia

Hollywood is ready to cash in on people's fears of Donald Trump's presidency. Universal Pictures has just picked up the rights to a new film called Little America, which is described as a "futuristic adventure movie." Michael Bay will be helping develop the project as a producer and British filmmaker Rowan Athale (Wasteland) will direct from a script he wrote.

THR describes the film as being a "sci-fun" story rather than a "sci-fi" story. They go on to offer the following story description:

The tale is set in a dystopian future where a Donald Trump-like president has bankrupt America and China has called in its debts. The Asian giant now owns America and many Americans have immigrated to China looking for work.
In this new world, a former American Force Recon member is hired by a Chinese billionaire to go into an American ghetto and rescue his daughter. Sources have said it is in the tone of Escape From New York, the 1981 John Carpenter film that starred Kurt Russell.

It definitely sounds like an interesting premise, and it sounds like it could make for a great, entertaining movie. I don't know if any of you have seen Athale's movie Wasteland or not, but it's a pretty decent heist movie worth checking out. Athale seems like a talented filmmake,r and I'm curious to see how this next film of his turns out. Who knows, maybe it'll give Trump something more to tweet about.

Sundance Review: Sam Elliott Gives the Best Performance of His Career in THE HERO

$

Sam Elliott is an incredible actor who has had a long and successful career of playing all kinds of great and interesting characters. I'm a big fan of his as he's got such a fantastic look and a cool personality. He never disappoints with the characters he plays, and now he's given the greatest performance of his career to date in a wonderful film called The Hero.

Elliott plays an aging actor who has had a long career making westerns and his career has fizzled into doing voiceover work for commercials. He spends his days trying to figure out what his next step is and getting high with his friend and dealer played by Nick Offerman.

While navigating through life as an old actor best known for one good western he made called The Hero, he finds out he has cancer and is forced to deal with the ramifications of that. As he's in a state of calm panic he meets a young woman played by Laura Prepon, who falls for him, and he attempts to make amends with his estranged daughter played by Krysten Ritter.

It's a wonderfully touching story about coming to terms with the hand that life has dealt you and how to make the best of it as it when things seem dark and unfixable.

Elliott gave an award-worthy performance, and there are several times throughout the film when he makes you laugh with his incredibly and amusing charm and cry with his deep heartfelt spirit and emotion. He was simply captivating, and I hope it gives a boost to his film career. I'd love to see him take on more incredible roles like this!

The Hero is a beautifully told story and a poetic film that's not to be missed, so check it out when it eventually gets released!

Waifus. Maybe your friend has one, maybe you have one. Whether you want to acknowledge it or not, waifu has become an ironic joke in geek culture to the point where it's now a real thing. Body pillows, fake marriages, you name it...and it isn't going anywhere soon.

We might as well embrace the trend while it lasts and poke some fun at it. This skit from Gigguk shows what would happen if a waifu would become self-aware! Check it out below.

Dave Bautista on Drax's Role in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2 and Geeking Out with Kurt Russell

Director James Gunn recently talked about Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and said he was blowing people's minds. Audiences weren't expecting to love this character so much in the first movie, and now people can't wait to see what's in store for him in the sequel.

The actor who plays Drax, Dave Bautista, recently talked with Collider about the character and his role in the sequel. We know that the character will have a more beefed up part in the story this time around, and Bautista talked about some of the things about his character that we'll see:

“It’s an extended version of the first film, for the Drax character. There’s just a lot more…most people’s first perception of Drax would be he’s just a big, muscly brute, and he’s just going to go in and be an all-action character. But he’s more funny, driven … there’s a lot more of that. He gets closer and more caring with the other Guardians, and they become more of a solid family in this one. If I had to put a tag on this second film I would say ‘family,’ that’s kind of the theme.”

I have no doubt that fans will fall in love with him all over again in Vol. 2! The actor then talked about working with Kurt Russell on the film. As you know, Russell plays Star-Lord's dad, who happens to be Ego the Living Planet. Bautista said:

“Yeah it’s so funny, I didn’t want to hit him with all of the fanboy questions right off the bat, but as soon as I got comfortable with him I did. He’s great and super down to the earth, he’s a very social guy and doesn’t like to separate himself from the younger cast, he’s got a lot of great stories, he’s very good looking (laughing) … he’s a very interesting guy!

"The first thing I asked him about was Big Trouble in Little China, I just wanted to know more about that, and what he thought about The Rock being recast as Jack Burton and he said, ‘Ah, I don’t care.’ And I said ‘Really?!’ I was really upset by that because to me, The Rock is not Jack Burton, like Chris Pratt would make a much better Jack Burton.

"I take that stuff very personally, because I’m a fan boy first, I am a geek at heart. So, he just didn’t care (inaudible) ‘Oh I’m sure he’ll do a great job’”… and then of course I asked Escape from New York questions, and we had a lot of good conversations about that.”

I want to sit down with Kurt Russell and have conversations with him about this stuff! That would be so freakin' cool! Regardless, it's cool to know that Bautista is just a big muscular geek

BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES Intro Gets a Stop-Motion LEGO Recreation

The intro to the classic Batman: The Animated Series has been recreated in stop-motion LEGO form and it's pretty damn fun. It was created by Kyle Roberts and it's so cool that after all these years, fans are still paying tribute to this animated masterpiece. The video came with the following note from the creators:

There's only one way "Batman: The Animated Series" could get more awesome and that's brick by brick. Stop motion enthusiasts Kyle Roberts and Nathan Poppe are back with their latest reimagined '90s cartoon opening credits. This time they've given it a LEGO twist because "The LEGO Batman Movie" hits theaters Feb. 10 and nobody's looking forward to it more than these nerds.

"I can safely say my childhood wouldn't have been the same without Batman or LEGO. It only felt natural to see them combined in stop motion heaven,” said Poppe.

“I remember coming home from school almost every day and turing on this show. It’s one of my all time favorites. It was for sure a labor of love recreating this intro,” Roberts says.

It took more than 1,000 photos, 40 hand drawn backgrounds and more than 300 hours of work to complete this stop motion project. Paired with Belgium composer Joris Hermy's sweeping soundtrack, this tribute is a work of art and a fun, nostalgic trip for Batman fans of all sizes. Joris scored all of the 'Bad Days' animated episodes over at MarvelousTV. Tighten your utility belt and get ready to click "watch again" to catch all the Easter eggs.

All their hard work paid off, and I know fans will enjoy what they've done here, so check it out!

Francis Ford Coppola Is Kickstarting an APOCALYPSE NOW Video Game!

Here's something I never expected to see happen. Legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is kickstarting a video game based on his classic 1979 Vietnam war film Apocalypse Now!

Copploa's American Zoetrope will co-produce the game, and they are looking to raise $900,000 to do it. According to the Kickstarter page, the game will be "an immersive, psychedelic horror [role-playing game]." It will be developed by a talented team of people who have worked on games such as The Witcher, Fallout: New Vegas, and Star Wars Galaxies. Here are some additional details on the game and what it will be about:

Apocalypse Now depicts the horror and spectacle of the Vietnam War through the character of Captain Benjamin Willard, an American tasked with the assassination of Colonel Walter E. Kurtz.
The game is an interactive recreation of Willard’s journey, as seen through a survival horror lens in which players with limited resources face unspeakable terrors.
By choosing how to react to these situations, each player molds a unique version of Willard within the loose confines of the film story. You are Willard and your actions will determine his fate.
Your mission begins in Saigon, where Willard is holed up in a dingy hotel. Audio and visual distortion evoke Willard’s emotions and past experiences. The game provides you subjective access to a character who is already nearly insane.
Unlike a traditional RPG, the emphasis is not choosing dialogue, but rather actions and postures. Combat draws from survival horror to emphasize combat avoidance and stealth. This is not Call of Duty in Vietnam.
You will quickly learn that the gun-blazing solo war machine of other shooters would not have lasted long in the real Vietnam. Instead you will find rewards for proceeding cautiously and managing limited resources with care. Willard is your responsibility; make him an adept soldier and you will command respect in the jungle.
Brutalism and hubris will bring about severe repercussions affecting your relationship with those around you, especially the crew of the PBR Streetgang (aka the Erebus). Your actions can endanger or empower them and will affect how they view you and their willingness to aid you.
There is also a war of resources. Food, water, first aid supplies, anti-malaria medicine, drugs, ammo, weapons, mission information, and gasoline are all vital to your and Willard’s success. While in U.S.-controlled territory, you can find resources through exploration, interactions with allied forces, completing side missions, scavenging from hostiles, and supply drops.
Once the Erebus crosses under the Do Lung Bridge, the reigns of control are sheared away. American influence is replaced by something more primal, all ending in Kurtz.
The world of Apocalypse Now is full of compelling, disturbing, and potentially useful characters. You will recognize many of them from the film, but we’ll be adding new ones in collaboration with our partners at American Zoetrope. Our goal is to immerse you in a tale of drama, magic, and horror.

It's estimated that once it's funded it will take three years to complete, and as a longtime fan of the film, I'm excited about the playing it one day. The talented team developing the game are looking to create a truly unique and psychedelic experience. In one of the promotion videos on Kickstarter, Coppola said:

"Forty years ago, I set out to make a personal art picture that could hopefully influence generations of viewers for years to come. Today, I’m joined by new daredevils, a team who want to make an interactive version of Apocalypse Now, where you are Captain Benjamin Willard amidst the harsh backdrop of the Vietnam War. I’ve been watching video games grow into a meaningful way to tell stories, and I’m excited to explore the possibilities for Apocalypse Now for a new platform and a new generation."

This will be the second Coppola film to be adapted into a game. The first was The Godfather, which didn't have his blessing like this one. Sounds like it's going to be an intense gaming experience! Make sure to check out the Kickstarter page because they have a work in progress video and some concept art.

Sundance Review: Jack Black Was Born to Play THE POLKA KING

I have a love-hate relationship with Jack Black. I love it when he acts in smaller independent films because he always plays interesting and fun characters and ends up giving great performances. But when he stars in these big silly studio films, I just don't have any interest in them. He just comes off as being fake Jake Black in those studio movies and it seems like wasted talent, but he makes the big bucks off them, so... ya know...

At least he does go out of his way to make these small great indie films! That says something about him. I had the chance to be his new film at Sundance called The Polka King, and no joke, this is a role he was born to play! He gave a wonderfully fun performance as he played a real-life person named Jan Lewan, a famous Polish polka musician from Pennsylvania.

The film is based on the wild true story of the rise and fall of Polish émigré Jan Lewan (Black), "from striving tchotchke shop owner in the ’70s to the undisputed 'King of Pennsylvania Polka' in the early ’90s. Lewan pursued the American Dream by any means necessary, fleecing investors and bribing officials to build a personal musical empire in what became the world’s only known Polka Ponzi scheme. Swept up by Lewan’s charismatic charm are his devoted wife, Marla (Jenny Slate), and his neurotic sidekick, Mickey (Jason Schwartzman)."

Whether you're a fan of Black or not, no one can deny that he was awesome in this role. It's one of the great performances of his career and listening to him excitedly sing polka music is just hysterical fun. There's so much energy and excitement in this movie, and it's the kind of energy that only Black could have really brought to the role.

Schwartzman was also great in the film. He's one of those actors I enjoy watching in movies. The only problem is he doesn't get enough movie roles! People need to hire him more! As for Jenny Slate in the role of Jan's wife, she was fantastic, but the scene stealer in the film was Jackie Weaver, who was absolutely hilarious in the role of Jan's disgruntled mother-in-law. She just made the entire theater roll with laughter.

I definitely recommend taking a chance on this one and watching it. Not only is the acting great, but it tells such a crazy and wild story that proves truth is stranger than fiction.

Vin Diesel Thinks a Groot Spinoff Movie Is Inevitable

Vin Diesel sure does love talking about Guardians of the Galaxy and sharing thoughts and information about the Marvel franchise to get fans excited. In a recent interview with MTV, the actor said that a Groot spinoff film is inevitable and that it's an idea that director James Gunn has already talked to him about! He says:

"It's something that James Gunn has talked about, and something that I know he'd love to do. Sure, I think it could be very interesting. I think it's inevitable, I think, ya know, that character's so enigmatic. He was already one of the most unique characters in the Marvel Universe, and I think what Marvel has done, primarily what James Gunn has done to realize that character has exceeded anyone and everyone's expectations."

I'd love to see a Groot spinoff movie, and I can't help but think that if it did happen, it would actually be a Groot and Rocket Raccoon spinoff movie because those two characters are always together.

I have no idea if this spinoff will ever actually happen, but it would probably be insanely successful if it did. Seeing a Groot and Rocket adventure brought to life on the big screen could be one of the greatest things ever! I hope it happens.

Oscar Nominee Naomie Harris Joins RAMPAGE Opposite Dwayne Johnson

Naomie Harris, who just earned an Oscar nomination for her role as Chiron's drug-addicted mother in Moonlight, has reportedly joined Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the upcoming film adaptation of the video game Rampage.

THR has the details, including that Johnson will not be playing a motion-captured version of one of the three oversized creatures terrorizing North America (just like in the game, a wolf, gorilla, and crocodile will be causing the chaos), but in fact the human hero of the movie, described as an "animal loving hero who is the world's only hope." Harris, who you may better recognize from her role as the new Moneypenny in the Daniel Craig-era James Bond films, will play a "geneticist with a moral streak." Should be fun to see Harris rub shoulders with Johnson on this one.

Rampage, which is being directed by San Andreas director Brad Peyton, is slated to hit theaters on April 20, 2018.

Artist Paints a Stunning HARRY POTTER Mural Across Her Chest

We know that die hard Harry Potter fans hold Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry close to their hearts, but artist Georgina Ryland is taking that to a whole level. Uproxx points us to Ryland's Instagram page, where she's documented herself painting a stunning mural of Harry and the gang's initial arrival at Hogwarts across her own chest. This is super impressive, not only for how accurate it ended up being, but for the fact that Ryland was able to use her own body as a canvas and physically paint it (mirrored) on herself.

Scott Derrickson Discusses Dan Harmon's DOCTOR STRANGE Contributions

$

Doctor Strange was one of the best comic book movies of last year, and now that the Marvel film is approaching its home video release date, the studio is trotting out the filmmakers for more interviews to talk about how the movie was made.

Remember how Community creator Dan Harmon was brought on to take a pass at the screenplay before the film hit theaters? Thanks to a new interview that director Scott Derrickson did with Moviefone, we now know that most of Harmon's jokes ended up being a little too weird for the movie. (Not too surprising, considering his sense of humor.) But it wasn't a complete bust — Derrickson described Harmon's contributions as being an essential part of the process:

"Meeting him in person -- he's odd and quirky -- but what he did was, he came in, saw a cut of the movie, and had a really striking analysis. Because he hadn't read any of the scripts and didn't know the Doctor Strange mythology and I'm not sure how much of a comic book fan he was. But he saw the movie, loved it, and had some breakdown things that were very helpful. That alone was probably his biggest contribution.
"Then he went off and wrote different things. There are some jokes that might have stayed in there, but for the most part, the scenes were a little too out in Dan Harmon-land, even for Doctor Strange. But I really love the guy and I really think he made a significant contribution in the process. He was the voice we needed to hear at the time, and I will always be thankful and watch anything he does. He's a brilliant dude."

Doctor Strange turned out to be one of the upper-tier Marvel Studios movies, and it sounds like Harmon's input had a lot to do with that. Very cool. Doctor Strange hits Digital HD on February 14 and Blu-ray/DVD on February 28, 2017.

WHAT ABOUT BOB? Is Getting a Female Reboot Series at NBC

NBC is developing a new series based on Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfus' classic, hilarious, Frank Oz-directed comedy What About Bob? This new series will reboot the story, and this time around it will have a female lead. The title of the series will be What About Barb?

According to Deadline, What About Barb? centers on a psychotherapist named Leo, "who tries to cut ties with her most overbearing patient but is unsuccessful and gains an annoying family member in the process."

What About Bob? is one of my favorite comedies of all time, and I hope this series can do it justice. I'm curious to know who they will end up casting in the roles of Barb and Leo.

What would be funny if they got the actress who played Barb in Stranger Things to play Barb in this new series, but I seriously doubt that's going to happen. One thing is for sure they have to bring in one hell of a talented comedic actress to fill Bill Murray's shoes.

The series is being developed by Joe Port and Joe Wiseman. They've worked on The IT Crowd, New Girl, and a lot of other TV stuff. I'm curious to see how this series turns out, and I hope that it's good! One thing is for sure, it's impossible to outdo what Murray and Dreyfus did.

NASA's Awesome New Spacesuits Look Inspired by 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

nasas-awesome-new-space-suits-look-inspired-by-2001-a-space-odyssey

NASA has revealed their new spacesuit design, and it has an insanely cool retro design with a modern twist that looks like it came straight out of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. I included a photo featuring the suits from the classic film so that you can compare.

The new spacesuits were made for the Boeing Starliner astronauts, and NASA provided the following details in a press release that I included below with all of the functionality and details of the suit. When talking about it, astronaut Eric Boe said:

"The most important part is that the suit will keep you alive. It is a lot lighter, more form-fitting and it's simpler, which is always a good thing. Complicated systems have more ways they can break, so simple is better on something like this."

Richard Watson, subsystem manager for spacesuits for NASA's Commercial Crew Program added:

"The spacesuit acts as the emergency backup to the spacecraft's redundant life support systems. If everything goes perfectly on a mission, then you don't need a spacesuit. It's like having a fire extinguisher close by in the cockpit. You need it to be effective if it is needed."

The press release says:

Astronauts heading into orbit aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft will wear lighter and more comfortable spacesuits than earlier suits astronauts wore. The suit capitalizes on historical designs, meets NASA requirements for safety and functionality, and introduces cutting-edge innovations. Boeing unveiled its spacesuit design Wednesday as the company continues to move toward flight tests of its Starliner spacecraft and launch systems that will fly astronauts to the International Space Station.
A few of the advances in the design:
  • Lighter and more flexible through use of advanced materials and new joint patterns
  • Helmet and visor incorporated into the suit instead of detachable
  • Touchscreen-sensitive gloves
  • Vents that allow astronauts to be cooler, but can still pressurize the suit immediately
The full suit, which includes an integrated shoe, weighs about 20 pounds with all its accessories – about 10 pounds lighter than the launch-and-entry suits worn by space shuttle astronauts.

To read the full thing click here. Below you'll find more photos and a video that shows off the new suit. This is so cool, and I absolutely love this design. Those guys at NASA have got some great taste in sci-fi fashion. I want one.

John Cleese Continues to Tease His Involvement With JUSTICE LEAGUE

$

After legendary actor John Cleese started following Zack Snyder and Ben Affleck on Twitter, fans immediately jumped to the conclusion that the actor would be joining the DCEU in Justice League and possibly The Batman. Why would Cleese follow these guys on Twitter? Maybe he's a fan. But then one of his most recent tweets teased even more clues to his connection to the DCEU.

Cleese sent the following tweet to fans before speaking at a panel event, and that's where the fans spotted the clues. Sitting on his desk are comic books that include Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's Justice League: Origin, and Scott Snyder, Jock, and Francesco Francavilla's Batman: The Black Mirror (Noir Version).

Could it be he's doing a little research? The graphic novels are clearly in plain sight, so he could be teasing his involvement with Justice League and The Batman or he could just be trolling fans for the hell of it.

I've seen some fans speculate that, if cast, the character will play a role in both Justice League and The Batman. A lot of the speculation and conversation centers around Cleese playing a Doctor at Arkham Asylum. Perhaps a version of Dr. Bartholomew Wolper from The Dark Knight Returns. He was a "fame-seeking psychiatrist who was critical of Batman's 'fascist' vigilantism and criticized him for not observing the civil rights of Gotham's criminals, in which Wolper firmly believed that Batman's actions indirectly made criminals insane like the Joker." He treated The Joker and Two-Face.

At this point, all we can do is speculate, but I love Cleese and I hope that he really does end up being a part of the DCEU!

Awesomely Sadistic New Trailer for GOTHAM Shows Bruce Wayne Brawling with Jerome

A new trailer has been released for next week's episode of Gotham,  and it looks batshit crazy! It fills us in on the details of Jerome's resurrection and eventual transformation into The Joker. It seriously looks like Gotham is about to step up to a new level because this thing is wickedly sadistic. We also get to see Bruce Wayne take on Jerome, and it looks like he kicks the living shit out of him.

If Jerome doesn't turn out to be The Joker... I quit. They've just set him up so perfectly to be the classic villain, and there are so many elements teased in this trailer that are references and nods to the Crown Prince of Crime from the comics and films. But this whole Jerome being Joker thing has yet to be confirmed.

It's got a viral plague that turns people into killer clowns, which has been used in a few Joker stories. Then there's Jerome’s face being sliced off his head and worn by others before being re-attached, which is similar to the character’s look in the Death of the Family storyline. Then there are some scenes set in a carnival that seems to be inspired by The Killing Joke.

This next episode looks so freakin' great! Check out the trailer and tell us what you think!

DC's THE FLASH Solo Movie Being Rewritten by KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD Writer

Man, the DC Extended Universe just can't seem to catch a break, can they? The latest obstacle for the struggling superhero franchise comes in the form of a rewrite of The Flash solo film, a movie that's experienced a myriad of problems throughout its existence thus far.

First, the film lost its writer/director Seth Grahame-Smith due to "creative differences," and then Dope director Rick Famuyiwa was brought on as a replacement before ultimately falling away — also citing "creative differences." The project is currently without a director, and Variety reports that King Arthur: Legend of the Sword writer Joby Harold has come on board to do a page-one rewrite of the screenplay. He's also writing a new Robin Hood and a Twilight Zone movie for WB, and he wrote the 2007 Jessica Alba thriller Awake.

I haven't seen King Arthur yet, but I personally think all of its trailers look godawful. That's disappointing, because I desperately wish DC and Warner Bros. would have hired a writer who's created movies I love so I could have a glimmer of hope that this movie would turn out well.

Because of all of the reworking behind the scenes, it seems almost impossible that The Flash will be released on its original release date of March 16, 2018. I really like the character and want this movie to be great, so hopefully Harold will be able to surprise me and turn in a draft that blows the studio away and gets them fired up about getting this movie on its feet. Ezra Miller stars as Barry Allen/The Flash, and he'll be joined by Kiersey Clemons as Iris West and Billy Crudup as Barry's father, Henry. We'll keep you posted when we hear more.
