Disney has released a stunning new banner promoting their live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. It definitely does a good job of showing off the large scale of the film, and it packs in all of our favorite characters.

Some of the characters it features are Emma Watson as Belle, Luke Evans as Gaston, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Dan Stevens as the Beast, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Stanley Tucci as Cadenza, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, Kevin Kline as Maurice, and Josh Gad as Le Fou.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is a live-action adaptation of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. Beauty and the Beast is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within.

Beauty and the Beast hits theaters on March 17, 2017.

Sundance Review: THE INCREDIBLE JESSICA JAMES is a Charming Feel-Good Movie

$

0

Going into this movie, I already had high expectations. I love Jessica Williams and absolutely adore Chris O'Dowd and have ever since IT crowd. It's entertaining and both of the actors are great in it. The movie follows an aspiring playwright (Jessica WIlliams) as she deals with rejection, teaching children, and finding love.

I quite enjoyed this movie. It made me laugh and made me feel good as I left the theater which is often what I look for in a movie. Besides being entertaining, however, it lacked in depth. Not to say that it has no depth, but just that the film tries to deliver multiple messages that the overall theme gets a bit lost in it all.

The film seems to be trying to say that the reason why you write or do anything is for the love of it and the love of theater. But then you also see certain themes about finding love, and moving on, and finding your voice. These are all great messages and ideas to share, but when you put so many in a movie and want them all to be given the same importance, it weakens the theme you want to deliver the most.

This being said, the movie still managed to deliver some wonderful performances. Both Jessica Williams and Chris O'Dowd were fantastic. Jessica Williams fit the character so very well. It honestly feels like the role was written with her in mind. And it was. So yeah. I give Jessica Williams some great credit being for such a strong forward minded woman without feeling like a message being shoved down my throat. She was likable and full of fun and strong energy. Right from the beginning as she danced on the roof of her building, I felt she was someone that I could enjoy following for the rest of the film. Chris O'Dowd also brought great comedic timing to the show. It is obvious he has a firm understanding of comedy and what makes a delivery work, as almost every line he delivered was done in such a way that made you at least smile.

Overall, I would say this movie is worth a watch. It has great performances and clever writing.  You will not be disappointed.

Kotobukiya recently revealed their radical Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Death Trooper ARTFX statue 2-pack, and they are totally worth adding to your Star Wars collection. The 1/10th scale statue set comes with several different display options that allow multiple poses. Here are the full details from Kotobukiya.

A Kotobukiya Japanese import! Star Wars ARTFX+ Statues bring you all of the quality and detailing that you expect from an ARTFX release in a great smaller scale perfect for collecting! The next fun army builder pack brings you characters from Rogue One, first of the new series of Star Wars standalone “story” films. While the movie introduced several new Imperial troop designs used before the events of A New Hope, the most sinister and distinctive comes to you now in a pair with the DEATH TROOPER TWO PACK! Elite soldiers in the Galactic Empire, the Death Troopers wear a unique and singularly menacing version of the classic Stormtrooper armor with several important differences. In addition to added equipment and ammo the helmet features an elongated faceplate, but of course the most obvious change is instead of the bright white of the standard armor it has a diabolical jet black finish! Serving the Emperor’s Military Intelligence, Death Troopers were tasked with rooting out Rebels and a contingent answered to Director Orson Krennic around the time of the theft of the Death Star plans. The ARTFX+ Death Troopers are highly detailed both in sculpt and paint, with glossy black finishes on their intricate armor. They can even be displayed in different poses (standing, kneeling, aiming weapons, etc.) thanks to a plethora of included interchangeable parts!

ARTFX+ Statues are fun-to-assemble pre-painted snap-fit kits that can be put together easily in seconds without glue or modeling skill. The Death Troopers in this 2-pack stand just over 7 ½ inches tall (1/10th scale) when posed fully erect, and magnets in their feet provide perfect stability on the included metal display bases. Crush any Rebels that might be lurking in your home with this great Imperial army building set!

M. Night Shyamalan's Plans for UNBREAKABLE 2 Revealed in the Coolest Way

Unbreakable is my favorite M. Night Shyamalan movie. I loved the flick, and I've been wondering if he would actually ever get around to making a sequel. He's talked about it in the past, and we know he's been working on it, but he just took a huge step in making it happen. He talks about how it all came about in an upcoming issue of EW.

I have to warn you, though, this article contains some major spoilers for his new film Split:

In case you're wondering what Split has to do with the Unbreakable sequel... Split is set in the same universe as Unbreakable! If you haven't seen Split yet, you really need to because it's a pretty great flick, and that's something I never thought I'd say again about a Shyamalan film. One of the coolest aspects of it is that the end of the film even features Bruce Willis back in his role as David Dunn! I freaked out! It was one of Shyamalan's best and most exciting twist endings!

If you want to know how that ended goes down, here's a breakdown from EW:

The movie concludes with McAvoy’s character, who has gained the ability to transform into a 24th personality with supernatural strength called the Beast, on the loose, having escaped capture by the authorities. We then join the action in a busy diner as patrons are watching a TV news report about this man, who the media has dubbed “The Horde” because of his multiple personalities. One woman says that the story reminds her of another case, from years ago, involving “a funny guy in a wheelchair, what was his name?”
The camera turns and we see Bruce Willis, wearing a security guard work shirt that says “Dunn,” as he utters while looking up at the TV screen, “Mr. Glass.” That’s the nickname, of course, of Samuel L. Jackson’s character in Unbreakable, who in that movie’s surprise finale revealed himself to be a supervillain — in contrast with Willis’ David Dunn, a superhero.

How cool is that! It's a perfect set-up for an Unbreakable sequel! In an interview with the magazine, Shyamalan talked about Split and revealed that the villain in it was the original villain he wanted to use in the first Unbreakable film:

"This character, Kevin from Split, was in the original script of Unbreakable. The original draft of Unbreakable focused on David Dunn and Elijah as his mentor. Elijah tells him, 'You’re a comic book character, go try it.' And instead of bumping into the Orange Suit Man, David bumps into one of Kevin’s personalities and goes to save the girls. So you’d have been watching the girls side of it the whole time. That was the outline."

He talked about coming up with the ending for Split, which was always the plan, saying:

"Yeah. The movie’s over, you all know that in the audience, but now I’m playing you Unbreakable music, James Newton Howard’s great score. A third of the audience is like, 'Wait, what’s happening?' Their minds are kind of reeling. I screened it in Austin in September at Fantastic Fest and when the woman says the word 'wheelchair,' the place freaked out. Some people in the audience were screaming out 'Mr. Glass' before Bruce Willis even appeared."

When asked if this would lead to that Unbreakable sequel, the filmmaker said:

"I hope so. The answer is yes. I’m just such a wimp sometimes. I don’t know what’s going to happen when I go off in my room, a week after this film opens, to write the script. But I’m going to start writing."

He also said that he already has an intricate outline for the film and he's obviously pumped up about writing the script. I've been wanting to see this happen since I saw the first movie, and now it actually looks like it's actually going to get made! I'm excited!

David Ayer Regrets Not Making The Joker the Main Villain in SUICIDE SQUAD

$

Over the weekend, director David Ayer shared his honest, candid thoughts regarding Suicide Squad after a fan reached out to him and thanked Ayer for his work on the film, calling it a "masterpiece." I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it certainly was an awesome film that I had a blast watching.

After thanking the fan for his kind words, Ayer talked in great length about the film and the good and bad aspects of it. One thing he wishes he would have done differently was make The Joker the main villain. He posted the following note on Twitter

Thank you so much. I know it's a controversial film, I really tried to make something different, with a look and a voice of its own.
"I took inspiration from the insanity of the original comics. Making a movie is a journey, not a straight line. I learned so much. People want what they want, and everyone has a personal vision of how each character should look and walk and talk. If you set out to make a mass appeal movie, it's easy to end up with vanilla. But I went for it. And I know Squad has its flaws, Hell, the World knows it. Nothing hurts more than to pick a newspaper and see a couple years of your blood, sweat and tears ripped to shreds. The hate game is strong out there.
"The movie was wildly successful commercially. And the World got introduced into some very cool characters in the DC Universe. And that success is due exactly to the wonder and power of DC, of its characters. Would I do a lot of things different? Yep, for sure.
"Wish I had a time machine. I'd make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story. I have to take the good and bad and learn from it. I love making movies and I love DC. I'm a High School dropout and used to paint houses for a living. I'm lucky to have the job I have. I have to give the characters the stories and plots they deserve next time. Real talk. (And no, there isn't a secret edit of the film with a bunch of Joker scenes hidden in a slat mine somewhere.)"

It's interesting and refreshing to see him talk about his film like this. It's always cool when directors and other filmmakers humble themselves and own up to their mistakes. I will say that I actually did like the villain used in the film. The Joker has been done to death already, and I thought it was actually kinda cool that Ayer didn't go that route, but who knows, maybe he would have made a better movie with Joker as the main villain.

Ayer is currently developing Gotham City Sirens with Margot Robbie, and that will be a great chance for him to move on and try something new and different in the DC universe. I love the films that Ayer makes, and I'm excited to see what he's gonna come up with for Gotham City Sirens

STRANGER THINGS Originally Featured R-Rated Violence with Eleven Brutally Murdering People

The instant classic '80s set retro series Stranger Things was originally supposed to be a lot more hardcore than we ended up seeing on Netflix. When the Duffer Bros. started developing it, they were planning something much darker with a hardcore rated R tone. This included vulgar language and the fan-favorite character Eleven brutally killing people.

Ross Duffer discussed these early plans with Vulture at the Golden Globes. It's really interesting to see some of the details that he revealed. Stranger Things could have been a much crazier show than it what it already was. Duffer explained:

“The Eleven character, the kind of powers she has and to have a young protagonist that’s violent — it’s not E.T. It’s not a happy situation. She’s killing people, and brutally murdering them.”

He went on to say:

“The original pilot was much more violent. It was originally like an R-rated thing. Winona’s character was like, ‘Eff this, eff that!’ It felt a little bit unnecessary. I don’t feel like we sacrificed anything by toning it down a little bit.”

I don't think anything was sacrificed either. The series ended up being perfect the way it was. I'm actually really happy that they toned it down more for family audiences because I had a blast watching the series with my kids! But it would have been interesting to see Eleven go even more ballistic in season one!

Ross went on to talk a little bit about season two, giving us a little insight into what Will is:

“This gateway to another dimension is still open, so that’s not a good thing. Will was in another dimension for a while, so he may not be quite up to par. Those are the two things that are gonna kick-start us moving forward.”

I'm so stoked for the return of Stranger Things! I think I'm going to have an Eggo waffle viewing party! The series returns in July.

I've added A Series of Unfortunate Events to my Netflix queue, but haven't had time to check out the new series yet. For those of you who are fans of the property, Indiewire has pointed us to this cool video that shows how some of the key moments from the books were depicted in the 2004 film starring Jim Carrey versus how they're depicted in the new Neil Patrick Harris series. It's interesting to see that despite a different color palette, they cover a lot of the same ground in very similar ways.

CITY OF TINY LIGHTS Trailer: Riz Ahmed Gets in Over His Head as a Detective

$

I was wondering what Pete Travis, the director of 2012's Dredd, has been up to since that movie came out, and now I know the answer. Aside from a couple of TV projects, it looks like he's been hard at work on City of Tiny Lights, a new neo-noir thriller starring Riz Ahmed, who starred in last year's HBO series The Night Of and a little film you may have heard of called Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Now we have the first trailer for the film, and it appears to be a stylish, low-key thriller that could be a nice platform for Ahmed to impress with another strong performance.

Audiences in the UK will find out if that's true when City of Tiny Lights comes out there on April 7, 2017, but the movie doesn't have a theatrical release scheduled for the United States yet, so we'll keep our eyes peeled for this one.

Meet Tommy Akhtar (Riz Ahmed), cricket fan, devoted son to an ailing father and deadbeat private eye. He’s got an office above a cab firm, a taste for cigarettes and bourbon, and a finely tuned moral compass that he keeps hidden behind a sharp cynicism. When Tommy walks into his office one morning to find high-class prostitute Melody seeking his help, he’s launched into a story that plays as an utterly original modern noir.

Milla Jovovich Recaps the Entire RESIDENT EVIL Franchise Ahead of THE FINAL CHAPTER

With Resident Evil: The Final Chapter hitting theaters later this week, it's only natural that the star of the series, Milla Jovovich, would take to the internet to recap the entire franchise for you in case you need a refresher, or, in my case, have somehow never seen any of these films in the first place. As the name implies, The Final Chapter is intended to be the last movie in the franchise, but we all saw how that turned out with The Final Destination (followed by Final Destination 5) and Saw: The Final Chapter (to be followed by the upcoming Saw: Legacy), so we'll see how it turns out here.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Is the Official Title of EPISODE VIII

$

Disney has just sent out a press release revealing the official name of Rian Johnson's upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII. It's called Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and as you can see from the logo in the teaser poster above, they've gone from the yellow outline of The Force Awakens to a red one, calling back to the red that's been featured in a couple of posters in the prequel trilogy. The Attack of the Clones teaser poster featured red text, as did the poster for Revenge of the Sith:

Of course, red has traditionally been the color of the Sith in Star Wars lore, so this color choice sets an ominous tone for Johnson's new film.

And then there's the title itself. The obvious inclination is that it's referring to Luke Skywalker, but if he trains Rey to become a Jedi in this film (as some have speculated), maybe it's referring to her instead? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Cops Freak Out When Aziz Ansari Admits He Didn't Love LA LA LAND in Funny SNL Sketch

Aziz Ansari hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time this past weekend, and he did an excellent job — much better than Felicity Jones in the season premiere the week before (sorry Felicity, but yikes, that was rough). One of the best sketches of the night involved Aziz playing a guy who gets arrested because he didn't love Damien Chazelle's La La Land, and watching the cops go off on him is a pretty terrific representation of some of the conversations that have been happening about the movie on Twitter since it started winning a bunch of awards.

Gotta love the way this one ends, too. Right there with ya, Kenan.

If you're the type of person who loves cat videos and movies, here's something that amusingly combines the two. Sploid points us to this series of videos from a YouTuber that features cats acting out the "I am your father" scene from The Empire Strikes Back, the shower scene from Psycho, and a couple more. I was a little skeptical at first, but thanks to some solid editing and excellent framing, these work so much better than they should. The Titanic one is particularly hilarious to me for some reason. Enjoy!

First Look at Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison in THE CURRENT WAR

$

0

Even though we haven't seen a trailer yet, The Current War is high on my list of anticipated movies because of the incredibly talented people involved in the movie and the fact that it's a story that hasn't been told very often on screen. The movie covers the rivalry between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse as they battled to see who would win in the war of electricity in the late 1800s, with Edison championing direct current (DC) and Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla backing alternating current (AC).

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Edison, Michael Shannon plays Westinghouse, Nicholas Hoult plays Tesla, and the film co-stars Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland, and Tuppence Middleton, and it's directed by Me and Earl and The Dying Girl helmer Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. The film doesn't have a release date yet, but is expected to hit theaters sometime this year. ComingSoon points us to the first official photo of Cumberbatch as Edison, and while it's a little dark and not necessarily revealing about any further plot details beyond what we already knew, it still has me intrigued to see the final cut.

Samara Actually Comes Out of a TV and Scares the Hell Out of These Customers in a RINGS Prank Video

Are you pumped to see Rings, the new sequel to The Ring and The Ring Two? Paramount may have lost themselves a few audience members with this prank at an electronics store in New York that involved a girl dressed up like Samara (the creepy long-haired girl from the films) actually bursting forth from a fake TV set to scare the ever-loving hell out of these poor patrons. If any of them were planning on seeing the movie, I can't imagine they'd be willing to go through with that decision after nearly crapping themselves in terror here. I suppose it's kind of funny for the rest of us to see, though.

A new chapter in the beloved Ring horror franchise. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before.
Rings hits theaters on February 3, 2017.

STAR TREK Fan Film AXANAR Settles Lawsuit With Paramount and CBS

It's been a long road for Axanar, the crowdfunded Star Trek fan film from producer Alec Peters. Paramount and CBS hit the movie with a lawsuit that's gotten a lot of attention from the geek community over the past few months, and on Friday, the two parties have finally resolved their differences. The Wrap reports that Peters has agreed to make "substantial changes" to the movie and agreed that any future projects would comply with CBS and Paramount's fan film guidelines that were established last year.

Paramount and CBS (the distributors of Star Trek projects for film and television, respectively) have agreed to allow the Axanar team to continue to play their Prelude to Axanar videos on YouTube, and to allow the movie to play in two 15-minute chunks on YouTube after those substantial changes are made. The movie raised more than a million dollars, and fans who contributed to the project have been wondering how this whole situation would play out. Now they know. A joint statement read:

“Axanar Productions was created by lifelong Star Trek fans to celebrate their love for Star Trek. Alec Peters and the Axanar team look forward to continuing to share the Axanar story and are happy to work within the Guidelines for Fan Films for future projects. Throughout this process, we will continue communicating with our fans and backers to ensure they are informed and involved until we reach completion of the production.”
