Keith David Voicing The Flash Ally Solovar in Upcoming Episodes

Gorilla Grodd will be returning to the world of The Flash, but this time Barry will have an additional ally! Deadline says actor Keith David (Platoon, Crash, The Thing) will be voicing Flash ally Solovar in an upcoming two episode arc of the CW series.

Showrunner Andrew Kreisberg says to watch out for the appearance around episodes 13 and 14 of the series. That's about four episodes away from the return of the series, so I'm wondering what is going to happen in that short time that's going to flip the Flash universe (once again) on its head!

It'll be cool to see Grodd return, although I hope they do a better job masking the CG effects this time around. I know there were people on the site who disagreed with me calling them cheap back then, but your comments didn't sway me! Feel free to share your thoughts below in the comments.

Ralph Fiennes and Hugh Laurie Join CastoOf Will Ferrell's HOLMES AND WATSON

Two men that you would expect to see in a film centered around Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have been cast in a film that has already cast two odd actors for the lead roles. Ralph Fiennes and Hugh Laurie will appear alongside Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in Holmes And Watson (via THR).

Considering its two lead actors, I highly doubt this film will be steeped in the drama that the detective novels and series have typically been associated with. That said, adding two U.K. names like Laurie and Fiennes has to strike a nerve for fans who have always wanted to see the noted actors in the famous roles. Considering we know very little about the project, including the roles of the two recently cast actors, I guess I shouldn't jump to conclusions.

Weird casting aside the film does have me interested in a character that has been done to death, particularly in the last decade, so I gotta give them that. I can't wait to see a trailer!

Watch Michael Cera Attempt to Land the Box in the Trash in SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD

It always amazes me what is and isn't faked in movies. This would be a great example of "why didn't you fake this"?! For those that haven't seen the movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. The WorldMichael Cera's character receives a package and instantly throws it over his back and into the trash. What I'm just now learning watching this video is that he actually had to do that! It can't be that hard to make a CGI box right?

I think the most surprising part of this video is that it only takes a little over 30 tries, and he gets really close each time! Check out all the attempts below.

10 Years Ago the World Saw the iPhone for the First Time

Today marks 10 years since the announcement of the first iPhone. We take it for granted now, but it's astonishing how far mobile devices have come in just 10 years. If I think back to my cellphone situation in 2007, I was using a Virgin Mobile phone to send texts for 10 cents a page to my girlfriend who went to another school. Fast forward to now where I can facetime my wife for free over wifi from Atlanta and not miss a beat?! That's pretty damn astounding.

I posted the original keynote because it reminded me of a time before the iPhone and really brought to light just how much this technology has impacted our lives. It's also hilarious to hear something like touchscreen phones to be referred to as "magic." Check it out below.

Do you remember your life before smartphones?

Showtime has announced that David Lynch's Twin Peaks revival will premiere with a two-hour event on Sunday, May 21st at 9pm ET/PT. It was also announced that immediately following the Twin Peaks premiere, Showtime subscribers will have access to the third and fourth episodes exclusively on Showtime's streaming services, Showtime Anytime and Showtime On Demand.

The following week, Showtime will also air the third and fourth episodes of Twin Peaks back-to-back. That will be followed by one-hour episodes every week after until the series concludes after a total of 18 episodes.

I'm extremely excited about this! Twin Peaks was such a crazy-ass show, and I never thought I'd see it return. I can't help but think that Lynch is going to give fans something even wackier and more insane.

The series takes place 25 years after the strange events in the original series when the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town were stunned when their homecoming queen Laura Palmer was shockingly murdered. Many of the original cast members have returned to reprise their roles.

The cast of the series includesdchen Amick  Ray WiseAlicia WittWarren FrostDana AshbrookSherilyn FennDavid DuchovnyJames BelushiChrysta BellRobert KnepperMichael CeraEddie VedderAmanda SeyfriedTom SizemoreBalthazar GettyNaomi Watts, and Laura Dern, among others.

Here’s the official synopsis for the Twin Peaks revival:

Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential broadcast series of all time, TWIN PEAKS followed the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town who were stunned after their homecoming queen Laura Palmer was shockingly murdered. The town’s sheriff welcomed the help of FBI agent Dale Cooper, who came to town to investigate the case. As Cooper conducted his search for Laura’s killer, the town’s secrets were gradually exposed. The mystery that ensued set off an eerie chain of events that plunged the inhabitants of Twin Peaks into a darker examination of their very existence. Twenty-five years later, the story continues…

Karl Urban May Have Joined PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING; Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day Set to Return

It looks like a few actors from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim will be returning for the sequel. Thanks to a recent photo posted by cinematographer Dan Mindel via Instagram, we learn that Rinko Kikuchi will reprise her role as Mako Mori, and it confirms that Charlie Day and Burn Gorman will be back as well. The big piece of news it reveals is that Karl Urban seems to have joined the cast as well, which is freakin' awesome! All that information is on a little sticker placed on the side of the camera.

The all join the previously cast John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who was cast as the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost, as well as Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny. I just love that Urban will most likely be in the film. This is the kind of film franchise that he's perfect for. It'll be interesting to see what role he plays in the film.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is being produced by Del Toro, and it's being directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Marvel’s Daredevil). It will be released on February 23, 2018.

Adrenaline-Fueled Trailer for Pixar's CARS 3

adrenaline-fueled-trailer-for-pixars-cars-3

Disney has released a new trailer for Pixar's Cars 3. The Cars franchise isn't my favorite thing that Pixar has done, but this third chapter in the story actually looks interesting. This latest trailer offers new footage and more insight into the story. It actually looks like a really good and exciting film, and I never thought I'd say that about a Cars movie.

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

Last week we were introduced to a couple of the new generation of cars that come into Lightning McQueen's life. One of them is a villain-type character named Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), and the other is a character that comes in to help McQueen. That character's name is Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo). When previously talking about the film, director Brian Fee said:

“McQueen is not the young hotshot anymore, the kid he was back then in Cars 1. He’s in the middle of his life, and as an athlete, that’s getting up there. You have your whole life ahead of you, yet your career is starting to show its age. He’s looking in the mirror and realizing, ‘I’m 40 years old,’ and dealing with the fact that the thing that you love more than anything else, you might not be able to do forever.”

Cars 3 opens in theaters on June 16th, 2017.

James Gunn Discusses Star-Lord Meeting His Dad in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

There's a lot of excitement revolving around Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We don't have a lot of story details yet, but we do know is that one of the main things it will focus on is Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) meeting his father Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell) for the first time.

In a recent interview with USA Today, director James Gunn talked about what it's like for Star-Lord to meet his dad for the first time ever, saying:

“It runs the gamut of emotions for him, wanting to understand why his father wasn’t around to quickly idolizing him and ultimately learning the reality of the relationship and comparing the man who sired him to the man who raised him.”

This is sure to make for an interesting, dramatic, and fun story dynamic. I'm excited to see how that plays out for Peter Quill and his pops. Gunn also talks about the Guardians team that consists of Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper) and kid Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), and what it means for them to come together to form a family unit.

“To let somebody love you is a very difficult thing, especially when you’re damaged goods. And all of the Guardians are damaged goods.”

That's what I love about these characters! They're all misfits who have been thrown in the trash who come together to find a positive purpose to live and fight to help save the universe. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes out on May 5th!

The Unipiper Is Back as Darth Vader, But This Time He's Shoveling Snow

The Unipiper, aka Portland's Brian Kidd, is well-known for his schtick in which he dresses up as a pop culture character, precariously balances on an object (whether it's a ball or a unicycle), and glides around playing flaming bagpipes. He's dressed as Darth Vader twice before — once for The Force Awakens and once for Rogue One — but aside from the general joy he brings to society and the internet at large with his antics, he's added another benefit to his performance: shoveling snow. Granted, he doesn't actually shovel all that much, but I doubt I could do any better in those circumstances. (I also like that he's wearing shorts. It adds to the ridiculousness of the whole scene.)

New ALIEN: COVENANT Photo; Katherine Waterston Compares Her Character to Ripley

Kathrine Waterston looks like a complete badass in this latest photo from Ridley Scott's highly anticipated Alien: Covenant. She also looks like she's under some pretty heavy stress, and she's most likely fighting off some monstrous xenomorph alien.

The photo comes from USA Today, and when talking about her character, Daniels, she says, “You don’t really know what you’re made of until you’re tested.” She goes on to talk about one of the similarities between her character and Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley, saying:

“They are both able to somehow think clearly in really shocking, unimaginable scenarios. It’s fun to play someone who can thrive in that chaos.”

From all the photos that I've seen of Daniels, it seems like she shares more similarities than that, especially in looking like a badass. When talking about whether she preferred the Alien Chestbursters over Facehuggers, she laughingly said:

“I’m very squeamish. I’ve seen these movies many times, but I feel like I’ve barely seen any of the alien scenes because my eyes are usually covered.”

This movie looks like it's going to be great. In case you need to be reminded of that, you can watch the trailer for it here. The movie hits theaters on May 17th!

"Kong is God on the island, but the devils live below us."

Warner Bros. has released a Japanese trailer for Legendary Pictures' Kong: Skull Island, and it's pretty damn exciting! It features some cool new footage and perfectly sets the tone of the kind of movie that it's going to be. There are certainly going to be a lot of crazy new creatures to deal with other than Kong and some epic fiery destruction.

The new film follows a team of explorers who venture deep inside the treacherous, primordial island to find the leader's brother and a mythical serum, confronting extraordinary creatures along the way.

The movie has a great cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and John GoodmanKong: Skull Island was directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and it's set to be released on March 10th, 2017.

The Nerdwriter Analyzes How SHERLOCK Films Thought

I don't know about you, but I thought this past Sunday's episode of BBC's Sherlock, entitled "The Lying Detective," was a huge improvement over the first episode of this season. I'm not a huge fan of the whole "Mary Watson spycraft" angle, so to see that put on the back burner in favor of a story about Sherlock reuniting with John Watson to stop a serial killer (with the always-solid Amanda Abbington still very much in the picture in John's mind) was a glorious change of pace and I think it's exactly what the show needed.

In a new video essay, the Nerdwriter analyzes the singular way this show films the thoughts of its title character. It's a nice breakdown of one particular series of revelations in the episode, and a good look at the inventive and sophisticated storytelling methods utilized by the directors of this show. I'm looking forward to seeing how next week's episode goes, and whether or not it will serve as not only the season finale, but also the final episode of the entire show.

Trailer for Maisie Williams' Netflix Film iBOY Centers on a Boy Who Gains Techno Superpowers

Netflix has another great looking film that they will be releasing called iBoy. The story follows a teen boy, who, through a series of tragic events, gains techno superpowers. How? He gets shot in the head while holding his cell phone and fragments of his cell phone end up in his head. This somehow allows him to manipulate technology, surf the internet in his brain, and get tips on how to fight people while in the heat of action. I know it sounds a little silly, but the movie actually does look really good. This has the potential to be a fun and different kind of superhero film.

Tom is an average teenager whose world is turned on its head when a violent encounter with local thugs leaves fragments of his shattered smartphone embedded in his brain. He wakes from a coma to discover that returning to normal teenage life is impossible because he has developed a strange set of superpowers. With these new powers he sets out to seek revenge on the gang, who also assaulted his best friend Lucy.

The film stars Bill Milner (X-Men: First Class) as the boy, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as his love interest, and Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful) as the villain.

iBoy will be available to watch on Netflix on January 27th, 2017.

DEADPOOL Writers Talk Sequel and Claim Vladimir Putin Leaked the Test Footage

While there's a very high probability that four people collectively decided to leak the Deadpool test footage, there's also a small chance Russian President Vladimir Putin was involved! Deadline spoke to the writers about the film's award chances, the sequel, and of course, the infamous leak that got it all rolling. We've all heard the story of "the leak" that finally got footage of Deadpool in front of the public, but writer Paul Wernick thinks he's narrowed down who did it...

"We’ve always wondered who leaked that test footage. There’s really been only four suspects—it’s been myself, Rhett, Ryan [Reynolds], and [director] Tim [Miller], but a new suspect has emerged, and we’re gonna give you the scoop on this. It’s Putin, actually; Vladimir Putin leaked the test footage for Deadpool."

I wouldn't peg Putin as a big Deadpool fan, but then again I'm not sure many people expected the film to be the $735 million dollar success that it was, and yet the writers laugh that a film so successful is viewed an "underdog" in the award season for films...

"How rare is it that a movie that made $783 million is kind of the underdog of the award season? [Laughs] It’s rare that a movie like this, that’s generally considered a popcorn type movie, gets recognized among such serious, great fare. So, it’s both surprising and exciting, and unexpected, and yet, so gratifying"

As far as the update on the sequel, things are looking very positive! The team is still planning on including Cable and shooting sometime this year...

"It’ll be populated with a lot of characters, but it is still Deadpool’s movie, this next one. We’re pushing forward very hard. I think by every account we will shoot it this year, and we’re on our multiple draft now. It’s taken different twists and turns, but it’s really coalescing, and we’re very, very excited. We’re a little nervous, because now we feel like we have to live up to the first movie, but at the same time, we have to have faith, and we have an extreme passion still, and as long as we have passion still, and it’s not a mercenary, venal play, which we don’t think this is, I think we’ll be in good shape."

The only bad news? There's no plan to bring Deadpool into the current fold of X-Men films just yet as far as the writing team knows, but don't rule it out!

Adam Savage Interviews Engineers Who Have Literally Mastered Fighting Fire With Fire

Adam Savage teams up with GE to witness something that was once believed to be impossible. These guys are fighting fire with fire, but not in the way you'd think! These engineers are then sending sound recordings of fire through a tube with enough force to extinguish the fire! Kind of sounds like a technicality to me as the sound waves are essentially forcing air to blow out the candle, but it's still pretty cool to watch nonetheless. Check it out below!

Updated with new photo below:

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have our first photo of Marvel's The Defenders team assembled together. There's also a behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot that you can watch below that includes interviews with Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Finn Jones (Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist).

In an interview with The Defenders showrunner Marco Ramirez, he talked about the characters coming together for this story explaining:

“Every one of them is following their own trail of bread crumbs, trying to unpack a mystery in New York. We wanted them all caught off guard. Once they’re in that room together, it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, s—, who are you?'”

Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb added:

“The Defenders didn’t have a ‘D’ on their belt buckles and a Defenders Tower. We agreed from the very beginning that these folks could at the very end go, ‘I never want to see your face again.'”

I love that. It'd be a shame if they didn't come together again, but I love that attitude. The Defendersis set to arrive sometime in 2017, and they'll face off against none other than Sigourney Weaver as the villain. To read everything we know about the limited series, click here.

LA LA LAND Featurette Focuses on Costumes, Locations, and the Movie's Opening Scene

Lionsgate has released a new featurette for La La Land, the studio's Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture that became the single most awarded film in Golden Globes history this past weekend. If you haven't seen the movie yet, I'd highly recommend it — it's one of my favorites of 2016.

The featurette concentrates on the movie's eye-popping costumes and real life locations, including some behind the scenes footage of when the production shut down a section of a Los Angeles freeway to film its opening musical number. La La Land is one of the most visually distinct movies that came out last year, combining primary colors and art deco production design with a more modern sensibility, and it's cool to hear about the thought processes that went into bringing this magical musical to life. The film is in theaters now, so check it out if you haven't seen it yet!

David Goyer and Justin Rhodes Brought on to Write the Script for GREEN LANTERN CORPS

David Goyer and Justin Rhodes have been brought on to write the script for Green Lantern Corps! According to Deadline, the new film is being described as Lethal Weapon in space and will center around Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

To be honest I'm kind of disappointed there was no mention of Guy Gardner in the press release! To leave him out of this film would be a huge snub for fans, so I have to imagine he's in it, wouldn't you?

I guess now that the project is official let's start the dream casting for John Stewart and (presumably) Hal Jordan! I'm also curious as to who you guys think should play Guy Gardner.
