HOME ALONE With Blood Is Hilarious and Stomach-Turning at the Same Time

I never thought I would want to tell someone I watched an NSFW version of Home Alone, let alone share it with people! We often make jokes about how resilient Harry and Marv are in the films, and how they keep chugging along after injuries that would kill most people. It's one thing to joke about it, and quite another to actually see a re-edited scene with the violence! That fall to the bottom floor almost rivals that Negan scene on The Walking Dead!

Fair warning, this clip may make you a bit squeamish...even if it is an edit!

I just don't know if I'm ready for the angst and darkness getting thrown at me in the latest Riverdale promo. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sure how you bring the Archie we know and love to television in a modern era, but if I were forced to do it, I wouldn't go the "gritty reboot" route! Someone got murdered in the latest promo, and I swear if Jughead ends up being the murderer...I don't know what I'll do! I don't even want to imagine something so horrible! I WANT MY HAPPY ARCHIE WHO HAS TWO GIRLS FAWNING OVER HIM BUT NOT IN A SCARY WAY!

Riverdale premieres January 26th on CW.

The first photos from Duncan Jones' (Moon, Warcraft) long-awaited sci-fi noir film Mute have been released by Netflix. These photos offer us a look at the visual style of the film and also show us Alexander Skarsgård (The Legend of Tarzan) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) in their roles. The movie also stars Justin Theroux (The Leftovers) and Seyneb Saleh.

Jones has said time and time again that this movie was heavily inspired by Blade Runner, and you can definitely see the influence of that film in these photos. Here's the story summary that was released:

Set in the near-future, Leo (Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly. A pair of wise-cracking American surgeons (Rudd and Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.

As a fan of Jones and his work, I'm excited to see this movie. I like what I'm seeing in these photos, and I can't wait to see this story play out. Mute will be released on Netflix sometime later this year.

Here's A Ginormous, 18 Pound, $9,000 Laptop That Makes You Question Technology

It's the laptop for the man who wants the modern desktop right in his lap...weight and all. I can't imagine there's a huge market for laptop that weighs more than a small dog, but I guess Acer wouldn't have made it if people wouldn't buy it!

While it is heavy, it does come with a 21-inch curved screen and 2 GTX 1080s, which is enough processing to run modern games at max settings and resolution as well as another game around the same quality. It's about as awesome as it is unnecessary, but something tells me the person willing to drop $9,000 on a laptop that's really a PC with an attached screen isn't too worried about the bare necessities.

The CW has released the first synopsis for the midseason premiere of Supergirl, which was directed by Kevin Smith episode and is titled "Supergirl Lives." We already saw a first trailer for the episode, which you can check out here. I also included a clip from the episode that you can watch below. This sounds like it's going to be an exciting episode!

KEVIN SMITH DIRECTS; ROULETTE RETURNS — Kara (Melissa Benoist) is moved by the story of a missing woman named Izzy (guest star Harley Quinn Smith) and decides to investigate despite Snapper Carr’s (guest star Ian Gomez) order to leave it alone. Kara takes Mon-El (Chris Wood) with her to the last place Izzy was seen and the duo find themselves thrust through a portal to another planet, Slaver’s Moon, where the downtrodden are sold as slaves. The leader of the trafficking ring is none other than Roulette (guest star Dichen Lachman).
To make matters worse, Slaver’s Moon has a red sun, which means Kara and Mon-El are stripped of their powers and stuck on the planet with no way home. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Alex (Chyler Leigh) blames herself for Kara’s disappearance, fearing she’s become too focused on her new relationship with Maggie (guest star Floriana Lima) and too complacent in watching out for her sister.

Supergirl returns to The CW on Monday, January 23.

Two Mermaids Join a Human Band in Screwy Red-Band Trailer For THE LURE

A red-band trailer has been released for a strange looking Polish film called The Lure. The story is set in the '80s and centers around two mermaid girls who join a human band at Warsaw nightclub. This definitely looks like a unique film, but it's not for everyone as it might be a little too bonkers for some people. Here's the official synopsis:

One dark night, at water's edge, a family of musicians encounter aquatic sirens Silver and Golden. After assuring the family that they won't eat them up, the winsome sirens are recruited to join the Figs and Dates band at a neon-lit Warsaw dance club. When Silver becomes romantically entangled with beautiful blonde bassist Mietek, the more cunning Golden, who cannot escape her bloodthirsty nature, worries that her sister's relationship will doom their shared dream of swimming to a new life in America.

The Lure gets a limited theatrical release starting February 1st, 2017. Does it look like a movie that you'd want to watch? Also, the trailer is red-band because it includes mermaid nudity.

The CW Is Developing a Reboot of CHARMED Set in 1976

Those of you who were fans of the WB series Charmed, will be happy to hear that The CW is is developing a reboot of the hit fantasy series. Charmed starred Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty, and Rose McGowan and ran for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006.

The actresses played sisters who were known as the "Charmed Ones," and they used witchcraft and magic to battle evil. According to Variety, the revival is being developed by Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Urman. She will be writing the series with Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin, who have both worked with her on Jane the Virgin.

At this point, the series only has a script order commitment, but if the network and studio like how that turns out then they'll obviously move forward with a pilot order. There's no information on what this Charmed reboot will entail, but the report does say that it will be a reimagining of the original series that will be set in the year 1976.

I don't imagine that Milano, Marie, Doherty, or McGowan will be a part of the reboot, but we'll just have to wait and see about that.

STRANGER THINGS Theme Song Remixed With The Weeknd's STARBOY

We're right in that zone of rotation for The Weeknd's "Starboy" that you could either be sick to death of hearing it so many times on the radio or still super psyched to groove to it whenever it comes on. But The Awesomer has pointed us to this cool remix that combines it with the Stranger Things theme song, which gives it a fresh new vibe that either camp can enjoy. What do you think — do you dig it?

Here's Ryan Gosling as DOCTOR STRANGE in Early Concept Art

Before Benedict Cumberbatch was cast in the role of Stephen Strange in Marvel's Doctor Strange, the studio was looking at actors such as Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto, and Ryan Gosling. I thought Cumberbatch was the perfect choice, but in case you're wondering it Strange would have looked like had Gosling landed the role, here's a piece of early concept art that was created by artist Court Chu for the studio. The artist posted the art on his website with the following comment:

“I worked probably not even a day on some version of Doctor Strange years ago, and back then they wanted Gosling.”

Sounds like Marvel's thoughts of casting Gosling went out the window when they saw this concept art. I enjoy Gosling and his work, but he definitely would not have been the right actor to play Strange. It's interesting and cool to see an artist's rendition of what Gosling would look like as the Sorcerer Supreme, though!

It's been a little while since the Comedy Central hit Key & Peele wrapped up its run, but since then, the duo have made one movie together, and Jordan Peele is directing an awesome-looking horror film that's set for release this year. But with President Obama just days away from vacating The White House, the pair have returned to their old network and did a quick guest spot on The Daily Show, resurrecting a couple of their classic characters to give the President one final send-off. For the last (?) time, here's Obama and his Anger Translator, Luther:

Channing Tatum and Tom Hardy Look to Join the Crime Thriller TRIPLE FRONTIER

Inception-Tom-Hardy.jpg

Channing Tatum and Tom Hardy are looking to join Paramount Picture's crime thriller Triple Frontier. The film was originally supposed to be directed by Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) with Tom Hanks, Will Smith, and Johnny Depp circling the project.

With this kind of star power trying to jump on the project, the script has got to be awesome! The film was written by Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty), and the movie is now being directed by J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year).

There aren't many details on the plot of the film, but we do know that it's set in the organized crime haven that exists in the border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. There are also five main roles that need to be filled.

Tatum and Hardy seem like they would make for a solid team-up for a movie like this. Both are talented actors that could do some damage together.

Whoa: Jyn Erso Might Have Grown Up in Padme Amidala's Apartment Complex

$
0
0

Here's a crazy piece of Star Wars lore that even the most dedicated fans probably missed: Rogue One heroine Jyn Erso may have lived in the same apartment complex as Padme Amidala on Coruscant. How do we know? The Inverse points us to a tweet from eagle-eyed Twitter user @manyymedia that blew my mind:

If you're still trying to figure out what and when and how, let me bring you up to speed. Rogue One opens with a flashback of young Jyn Erso watching her mom get gunned down in front of her, but later in the film, there's a different flashback that reveals a moment even earlier in her life, as she walks through a sleek-looking apartment complex on Coruscant. Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) is there with her parents, and she talks to her father Galen (Mads Mikkelsen), who's decked out in a slick Imperial uniform.

The Inverse breaks it down and surmises that at the moment we see Coruscant in Rogue One, Jyn could have conceivably gone to a different floor and visited Padme and Anakin:

If you do a little sleuthing in the convoluted Star Wars timeline, it seems to suggest that the Ersos and Padme could have been there at the same time.
The Rogue One prequel novel, Catalyst, which features Galen and his family’s Imperial drama with Krennic on Coruscant, takes place a year after Attack of the Clones when Padme sets up shop in her senatorial apartment building on Coruscant. She’s still there three years later when the events of Revenge of the Sith occur.

The people who work on the Star Wars movies might be even more obsessive than online fans, so it strikes me as totally plausible that this is a designed, purposeful choice. The alternative — that someone threw that in as a background without giving it a second thought — just doesn't seem like something that would happen in Lucasfilm's post-Disney acquisition world where everything is connected and a new canon is being meticulously built from the ground up.

What do you think?

Keegan-Michael Key Cast in Shane Black's THE PREDATOR

There's some great casting news for Shane Black's upcoming Predators film. Keegan-Michael Key, best known for Comedy Central’s hilarious comedy series Key and Peele, has joined the cast.

According to THR, Key will play a man who teams up with ex-marines Boyd Holbrook (Gone Girl) and Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) and a scientist played by Olivia Munn (You all know who she is). Together they will fight against the Predator.

There aren't any solid plot details for the film, but THR still insists that it will take place in the suburbs even though Shane Black said it will not. When previously talking about the film, Black said:

“I think the Predator movies have slightly veered from typical sci-fi in that there is a sort of thriller aspect to them. I think it should be scary, I think it should be funny, and I think ultimately it should be wondrous and about perceiving things that human beings very seldom get a chance to see… I don’t mean movie audiences I mean characters in the movie. I’m not saying the movie will be nothing anyone’s seen before (laughs).”

The Predator will start shooting next month and will be released in theaters on February 9th, 2018.

Ben's Favorite Movies of 2016

$

0

Last year, I wrote about the distinction between "favorite" and "best" when it comes to making these kinds of lists, and I'd encourage you to go back and read that because the same mentality applies here. These are my favorite movies of 2016 — the ones that either meant a great deal to me on a personal level or did something I found especially fascinating. A lot of critics' "best of" lists recycle the same 10 movies, but there's at least one on this list that I almost guarantee you won't see on anyone else's. So let's get on to the picks:

10. Swiss Army Man

This was a super late addition to the list, because I only caught up with it yesterday for the first time. I loved how it serves as almost a parody of indie film tropes but just slotted in the most ridiculous, off-putting thing they could think of (a farting corpse) to prove that the formula could still work. As bizarre as it is, this movie tells a legitimately sweet, heartfelt story and the performances from Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe are terrific. And that stirring score, wonderful cinematography, and immaculate production design of their adventures in the woods? Top-notch.

9. Hail, Caesar!

The Coen Brothers' romp through the Golden Age of Hollywood is not only laugh out loud funny, but full of the kind of rich thematic work that actually leaves you thinking about the movie and its messages for a long time afterward. Not enough people saw this movie last year, but I have a feeling it'll eventually take its rightful place in history as an upper-tier Coen film.

Fences 2.jpg

8. Fences

Denzel Washington directs and stars in this stirring look at the life of a tough black father and his relationship with his family in 1950s Pittsburgh, and while he's excellent in the movie, Viola Davis towers over him with her jaw-dropping performance. I don't think there was a better showcase for actors doing their thing on the big screen last year than Fences.

7. 10 Cloverfield Lane

Shrouded in secrecy until a few weeks before its release, this movie is a total knockout. The suspense made me squirm in the best possible way, and the bravura ending takes the small-scale thriller to a whole new level. Mary Elizabeth Winstead isn't quite a full-on Hollywood megastar yet, but this movie makes the case for why she should be in the industry's upper echelon. I also think John Goodman deserves some Oscar consideration for his terrifying supporting performance as Howard. It's a hell of a feature directorial debut from Dan Trachtenberg, and I can't wait to see what he does next.

6. Everybody Wants Some!!

Richard Linklater's breezy comedy covers the weekend before college begins for a freshman baseball player in 1980s Texas, and it's populated with a crazy cast of characters who all have their chance to shine. Spending time with these guys was one of the most enjoyable moviegoing experiences I had all year.

5. Kubo and the Two Strings

This is the best animated movie of 2016 by a mile. Laika's stop-motion work is breathtaking, but this is far from simply a style exercise: it's a fully formed story with memorable characters that pop, and the beautiful way the film treats huge concepts like death and legacy proves Laika actually respects its audience enough to give them something to think about (unlike a garbage movie like The Secret Life of Pets, which just goes from cheap gag to cheap gag with nothing interesting to say about anything).

4. O.J.: Made in America

A staggeringly in-depth work of art, this seven-plus hour film made me understand the verdict of the O.J. Simpson trial better than anything else. By giving us the proper context into not only O.J.'s life, but the political and societal upheavals and injustices that were brewing under America's surface leading up to the trial, the film sets the stage and captures the fallout more clearly than anything I've ever seen.

3. La La Land

Can two driven people balance their love for each other and their passion for their arts? That's one of the questions at the center of Damien Chazelle's heartbreakingly gorgeous La La Land, and the film isn't concerned with finding an easy answer. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone lay on the charm and the movie is really good...up until its final 10 or 15 minutes, which is where it goes from "really good" to "transcendent."

2. The Light Between Oceans

Here's the pick you won't find on anyone else's list. Most critics couldn't get into The Light Between Oceans, but I thought every single aspect of it was perfect. I don't think I've ever seen a movie where I was so convinced that every single decision made was unquestionably the best and correct choice, and I was completely bowled over by this movie. A heart-wrenching drama that's poignant and moving in all the right ways, this one will stay with me for a long time.

1. Arrival

It was going to take a lot to top The Light Between Oceans, but Denis Villeneuve's Arrival came along and did it. It's a totally different type of movie (which is why ranking these things against each other is arbitrary and admittedly ridiculous), but the way this script slowly reveals what it's truly doing as the movie goes along is masterful. This is smart science fiction that prefers intelligent communication to explosions, and it's one of the few films last year that swung for the fences and actually connected in a huge way. What a stunner of a movie.

FRONTIER Trailer: Jason Momoa Slashes Through His New Netflix Series

Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for Frontier, the new show starring Game of Thrones alum and Aquaman star Jason Momoa. Just judging from this trailer, it appears to have a bit of the same vibe as Tom Hardy's new FX series Taboo: both feature a lone badass in a world of stuffy British businesspeople. This trailer goes out of its way to keep Momoa's character a bit of a mystery, but hopefully the first few episodes of the show itself won't be like that. I don't know if I could put up with hours of British people talking about how badass he is...I want to see that badassery on full display.

We'll see what happens when season one of Frontier arrives on Netflix on January 20th.

Nick Fury Jr. Is Getting His Own Comic Series

$
0
0

While Marvel movie fans just know him as plain old Nick Fury, in the comics he's known as Nick Fury Jr. Marvel's canon response to the change of the director of S.H.I.E.L.D was to simply make him the son of the originally established Nick Fury of the comics. While this will likely never be referenced in the films (although it would be hilarious to see David Hasselhoff play Samuel L. Jackson's dad) the comics have decided to give the younger Nick Fury a comic book run just like they did his father.

i09 reports the whole series will be very old school spy era. This style even appears in the art, which you can see a preview of below...

I got nothing but support for Marvel running with this series, but I do have one question. What are the odds a father and son both lose the same eye and both opt to wear a patch? The series is set to release sometime this spring.
