Last night, ABC News aired a segment on Dateline that detailed the process of how Industrial Light & Magic created digital CGI versions of Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia and Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin. There have been a lot of conversations among fans regarding the digital versions of these actors, but I thought they pulled them off brilliantly, and I'm happy that Lucasfilm and the creative team followed through with the plan.

The video features an interview with ILM VFX supervisor and Chief Creative Officer John Knoll. It also gives us some cool never before seen behind-the-scenes footage of the process of creating these two classic Star Wars characters. Check it out!

New Trailer and Poster for LA LA LAND, One of 2016's Best Films

Damien Chazelle's La La Land is one of the best movies I saw last year, but due to its limited theatrical run, most of the country hasn't had the chance to check it out for themselves yet. That's about to change, because Lionsgate has released a new trailer for the film as it expands to a wider audience, and I also received a press release that the movie will be getting a special engagement in select IMAX theaters in the U.S. starting on January 13th. If you attend one of those IMAX screenings the first weekend it's playing and arrive early enough, you can take home a limited edition two-sided mini-poster for the film which has art and lyrics from one of the film's best songs on it.

If you don't want to wait until IMAX, though, I believe La La Land should be playing in most of the U.S. starting tomorrow, so check your local listings.

Kevin Smith Will Direct an Episode of THE GOLDBERGS Inspired by Tim Burton's BATMAN

The Goldbergs is like an explosion of awesome nostalgia, which is why I love watching it so much. Most of the episodes are inspired by films, TV shows, and other pop culture greatness from the '80s.

Some of the episodes were inspired by films such as The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Dirty Dancing, The Goonies, Say Anything, A Christmas Story, Knight Rider, Misery, and Commando. It was also recently announced that there will be a Karate Kid episode, which is sure to be a blast!

IGN is now reporting that Kevin Smith is set to direct an episode of the series, and the theme will be based around Tim Burton's classic 1989 film Batman! The episode will be titled "The Dynamic Duo," and when talking about it, Smith said:

"I grew up watching the Adam West Batman and I was in a sold out movie theater for Tim Burton's Batman on opening day, June 23rd, 1989, so I can't wait to recreate those early eras of Bat-amania in the Goldbergs Universe.
"Luckily, the funny folks in front of and behind the cameras who make this hysterical show every week will be doing all the heavy lifting in our time travel experiment."

Executive producer and creator of the series Adam F. Goldberg added:

"The hardest thing about having Kevin Smith direct an episode of The Goldbergs is playing it cool and not acting like a weirdo geek super fan. I’ve waited in long lines to have him sign my Bluntman comics, I’ve collected his Clerks action figures, I’ve forced my writers to watch clips of his speaking engagements and I shoe-horned in a part for him in my screenplay for Fanboys just so I could meet the guy. I even STAYED in Hall H at Comic-Con when J.J. Abrams escorted thousands of people to a Star Wars concert."
"This bearded hockey jersey wearing dude has been a hero of mine since I was at NYU film school. His movies have been a huge bonding point with my brother Barry and we’ve had entire conversations where we’ll quote Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. There is no better person out there to help bring our Burton’s Batman episode to life. Truly."

The episode will go into production next week, and I'm excited to see how it turns out! There's no doubt that Smith will give us something fantastically entertaining!

Comic: THE LORD OF THE RINGS Books vs. The Movies

Dorkly has created a funny little comic strip that provides a distinction between J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary The Lord of the Rings books and Peter Jackson's iconic movies. I think mega-fans will agree that both are great in their own ways, but these observations made me chuckle — especially the dig at the godawful Hobbit trilogy at the end.

Drew Barrymore's New Netflix Comedy Is a Zombie Series

Some new information has surfaced regarding Drew Barrymore's upcoming Netflix comedy series, Santa Clarita Diet, and it sounds great!

Barrymore stars alongside Timothy Olyphant (Justified) in the show as Sheila and Joel Hammond, who are married realtors in the Los Angeles suburb community of Santa Clarita. The big reveal is that it's a zombie series!

In the series premiere, we learn that Sheila goes a “dramatic change” as she dies and comes back as a flesh-eating zombie. It's explained that "while they tend to their open houses and teenage daughter, the couple must sate Sheila’s unbridled id and undead hunger, first with raw meat and, eventually, the human kind."

The show was created by Victor Fresco, who previously developed shows such as ABC’s Better Off Ted and Fox’s Andy Richter Controls the Universe. It's been years since Barrymore has done anything. In fact, it's pointed out by USA Today that she hasn’t worked since her daughters, Olive, 4, and Frankie, 2, were born.

She was drawn to this project, though, by its "darkness" and "strange parallels," and when talking about the show Fresco said:

“What if she finds herself, and we do this sort of Cro-Magnon type of evolution with her over the course of the 10 episodes. No gimmicks, no prosthetics, just an awakening.”

Barrymore adds:

“I just really enjoyed just shedding a snakeskin with her, so it became a really fun obstacle that I wasn’t even planning for but seemed so conducive and fun and healthy for my own life.”

I included the first image from the series above along with two promo posters that you can check out below. There's a lot of fun potential here to work with, especially with this concept and I hope it turns out to be entertaining!

NBC has released a fantastic and fun new promo spot for their upcoming DC comedy series Powerless. The series focuses on a group of "exceedingly average" employees of Wayne Securities Research and Development company in a world full of superheroes leaving a mess behind them every time they fight a battle.

I really like what I've seen in this first trailer, and I'm looking forward to watching the series. It stars Vanessa HudgensFirefly alum Alan TudykCommunity's Danny Pudi, and A to Z's Christina Kirk. Here's the synopsis:

Emily Locke lands her dream job as Director of Research and Development for Wayne Security in Charm City, home to super heroes and villains and citizens fed up with the collateral damage of their constant fighting. Full of confidence and big ideas, Emily quickly learns that her aspirations far exceed those of her new boss and officemates, so it will be up to her to lead the team toward their full potential and the realization that you don’t need superpowers to be a hero.

Powerless is set to premiere on February 2nd on NBC.

Archer season eight is moving to FXX, and that will be the new network home of the hilarious animated series. FXX has also released two exciting promo spots that give us a fun little tease of what is to come! I think it's awesome that this next season is set in 1947 in Los Angeles, this could very well be its wildest season yet!

Archer is an animated, half-hour comedy that revolves around the hardboiled private eye Sterling Archer and his quest to find his partner’s killer in 1947 Los Angeles. The case proves to be more difficult than expected after Archer quickly gets mixed up in a deadly game of tug of war between Los Angeles’ most powerful crime bosses. Every clue leads Archer further away from his goal and deeper into a mystery involving kidnapping, prostitution and drug addiction.

Archer was created by Adam Reed and Floyd County Productions. The cast features features H. Jon Benjamin (Sterling Archer), Aisha Tyler (Lana Kane), Jessica Walter (Malory Archer), Judy Greer (Cheryl Tunt), Chris Parnell (Cyril Figgis), Amber Nash (Pam Poovey), and Lucky Yates (Krieger)

The all new season is set to premiere this spring on FXX.

James McAvoy's Professor X Reportedly Confirmed for NEW MUTANTS

Last year, producer Simon Kinberg said that the version of director Josh Boone's New Mutants movie they were working on included Professor X. It looks like that's still the plan because one of the actresses up for a role in the film pretty much confirmed it. That actress is Anya Taylor-Joy, who stars alongside James McAvoy in the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan thriller Split, so she would know! In an interview with Comingsoon Taylor-Joy said:

“I have [seen the Demon Bear animatic], it’s pretty cool. I’m a big fan so I’d love to be a part of it. I can’t say very much, but I would love to be a part of it. I think this year’s gonna be very exciting.”

She was then asked if she hoped that it would reunite her with McAvory, and she replied:

“I mean, I think James is already a part of it, isn’t he?”

A lot of sites are seeing this comment as a confirmation that Professor X will be in the movie, and I can see how that would come across. I think it would be awesome to see McAvoy back in the role of Professor X because he's so damn good in it!

I have no idea if his involvement is a done deal or not, but Boone obviously has a place for him in the film if he wants it.

HOME ALONE With Blood Is Hilarious and Stomach-Turning at the Same Time

I never thought I would want to tell someone I watched an NSFW version of Home Alone, let alone share it with people! We often make jokes about how resilient Harry and Marv are in the films, and how they keep chugging along after injuries that would kill most people. It's one thing to joke about it, and quite another to actually see a re-edited scene with the violence! That fall to the bottom floor almost rivals that Negan scene on The Walking Dead!

Fair warning, this clip may make you a bit squeamish...even if it is an edit!

Somebody Got Murdered in the New RIVERDALE Promo

I just don't know if I'm ready for the angst and darkness getting thrown at me in the latest Riverdale promo. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sure how you bring the Archie we know and love to television in a modern era, but if I were forced to do it, I wouldn't go the "gritty reboot" route! Someone got murdered in the latest promo, and I swear if Jughead ends up being the murderer...I don't know what I'll do! I don't even want to imagine something so horrible! I WANT MY HAPPY ARCHIE WHO HAS TWO GIRLS FAWNING OVER HIM BUT NOT IN A SCARY WAY!

Riverdale premieres January 26th on CW.

The first photos from Duncan Jones' (Moon, Warcraft) long-awaited sci-fi noir film Mute have been released by Netflix. These photos offer us a look at the visual style of the film and also show us Alexander Skarsgård (The Legend of Tarzan) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) in their roles. The movie also stars Justin Theroux (The Leftovers) and Seyneb Saleh.

Jones has said time and time again that this movie was heavily inspired by Blade Runner, and you can definitely see the influence of that film in these photos. Here's the story summary that was released:

Set in the near-future, Leo (Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly. A pair of wise-cracking American surgeons (Rudd and Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.

As a fan of Jones and his work, I'm excited to see this movie. I like what I'm seeing in these photos, and I can't wait to see this story play out. Mute will be released on Netflix sometime later this year.

Here's A Ginormous, 18 Pound, $9,000 Laptop That Makes You Question Technology

It's the laptop for the man who wants the modern desktop right in his lap...weight and all. I can't imagine there's a huge market for laptop that weighs more than a small dog, but I guess Acer wouldn't have made it if people wouldn't buy it!

While it is heavy, it does come with a 21-inch curved screen and 2 GTX 1080s, which is enough processing to run modern games at max settings and resolution as well as another game around the same quality. It's about as awesome as it is unnecessary, but something tells me the person willing to drop $9,000 on a laptop that's really a PC with an attached screen isn't too worried about the bare necessities.

The CW has released the first synopsis for the midseason premiere of Supergirl, which was directed by Kevin Smith episode and is titled "Supergirl Lives." We already saw a first trailer for the episode, which you can check out here. I also included a clip from the episode that you can watch below. This sounds like it's going to be an exciting episode!

KEVIN SMITH DIRECTS; ROULETTE RETURNS — Kara (Melissa Benoist) is moved by the story of a missing woman named Izzy (guest star Harley Quinn Smith) and decides to investigate despite Snapper Carr’s (guest star Ian Gomez) order to leave it alone. Kara takes Mon-El (Chris Wood) with her to the last place Izzy was seen and the duo find themselves thrust through a portal to another planet, Slaver’s Moon, where the downtrodden are sold as slaves. The leader of the trafficking ring is none other than Roulette (guest star Dichen Lachman).
To make matters worse, Slaver’s Moon has a red sun, which means Kara and Mon-El are stripped of their powers and stuck on the planet with no way home. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Alex (Chyler Leigh) blames herself for Kara’s disappearance, fearing she’s become too focused on her new relationship with Maggie (guest star Floriana Lima) and too complacent in watching out for her sister.

Supergirl returns to The CW on Monday, January 23.

Two Mermaids Join a Human Band in Screwy Red-Band Trailer For THE LURE

A red-band trailer has been released for a strange looking Polish film called The Lure. The story is set in the '80s and centers around two mermaid girls who join a human band at Warsaw nightclub. This definitely looks like a unique film, but it's not for everyone as it might be a little too bonkers for some people. Here's the official synopsis:

One dark night, at water's edge, a family of musicians encounter aquatic sirens Silver and Golden. After assuring the family that they won't eat them up, the winsome sirens are recruited to join the Figs and Dates band at a neon-lit Warsaw dance club. When Silver becomes romantically entangled with beautiful blonde bassist Mietek, the more cunning Golden, who cannot escape her bloodthirsty nature, worries that her sister's relationship will doom their shared dream of swimming to a new life in America.

The Lure gets a limited theatrical release starting February 1st, 2017. Does it look like a movie that you'd want to watch? Also, the trailer is red-band because it includes mermaid nudity.

The CW Is Developing a Reboot of CHARMED Set in 1976

Those of you who were fans of the WB series Charmed, will be happy to hear that The CW is is developing a reboot of the hit fantasy series. Charmed starred Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty, and Rose McGowan and ran for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006.

The actresses played sisters who were known as the "Charmed Ones," and they used witchcraft and magic to battle evil. According to Variety, the revival is being developed by Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Urman. She will be writing the series with Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin, who have both worked with her on Jane the Virgin.

At this point, the series only has a script order commitment, but if the network and studio like how that turns out then they'll obviously move forward with a pilot order. There's no information on what this Charmed reboot will entail, but the report does say that it will be a reimagining of the original series that will be set in the year 1976.

I don't imagine that Milano, Marie, Doherty, or McGowan will be a part of the reboot, but we'll just have to wait and see about that.

STRANGER THINGS Theme Song Remixed With The Weeknd's STARBOY

We're right in that zone of rotation for The Weeknd's "Starboy" that you could either be sick to death of hearing it so many times on the radio or still super psyched to groove to it whenever it comes on. But The Awesomer has pointed us to this cool remix that combines it with the Stranger Things theme song, which gives it a fresh new vibe that either camp can enjoy. What do you think — do you dig it?

Here's Ryan Gosling as DOCTOR STRANGE in Early Concept Art

Before Benedict Cumberbatch was cast in the role of Stephen Strange in Marvel's Doctor Strange, the studio was looking at actors such as Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto, and Ryan Gosling. I thought Cumberbatch was the perfect choice, but in case you're wondering it Strange would have looked like had Gosling landed the role, here's a piece of early concept art that was created by artist Court Chu for the studio. The artist posted the art on his website with the following comment:

“I worked probably not even a day on some version of Doctor Strange years ago, and back then they wanted Gosling.”

Sounds like Marvel's thoughts of casting Gosling went out the window when they saw this concept art. I enjoy Gosling and his work, but he definitely would not have been the right actor to play Strange. It's interesting and cool to see an artist's rendition of what Gosling would look like as the Sorcerer Supreme, though!
