Zack Snyder Had a Quick Cameo in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

0
0

Your opinions about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are already crystallized by now, so there's no point in rehashing my thoughts on it for the millionth time. We all know where we stand when it comes to this movie. So let's move on to a quick piece of trivia, shall we?

Did you know that director Zack Snyder had a cameo in the film? I didn't until this morning, when I read some tweets from BvS cinematographer Larry Fong, who revealed that Snyder stood in for Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne during one particular shot:

And here's the reasoning behind why that went down:

So it sounds like it worked out for both of them in the end. If only the movie had turned out to be, you know, good. Damn it! I was so close to making it through an entire article without editorializing. Just couldn't resist.

ROGUE ONE Tops $800 Million Mark at Global Box Office

0
0

As expected, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a success at the box office. Variety reports the film has grossed $801 million globally, making it the 7th highest grossing film in the current global box office. The film comes out in China next week, so that number is surely going to climb, but not as much as you would think.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens only netted $125 million upon its Chinese release, which is a much smaller number than other American properties that have succeeded in the country. For example, the film's numbers are overshadowed by many Marvel hero films and Transformer movies. Perhaps China will respond better to Rogue One due to its nostalgia factor...

In either case, it appears that spin-off Star Wars films aren't going anywhere for awhile if Disney can expect these types of numbers for the films! While I'm positive the other films can be as entertaining, it's going to be awfully hard to top the bar set by Rogue One!

In case you were curious, Rogue One currently sits at 68th in the top grossing movies of all time. That's slightly above Guardians of the Galaxy and slightly below Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them...and a far cry from Star Wars: The Force Awakens in the top 3!

Video Breaks Down How A Solar Flare Can Destroy Humanity

0
0

If you've ever read about potential Doomsday scenarios to Earth, you're familiar with the "solar flare" scenario. For those of you who aren't, this is honestly the most probable and preventable way humanity can end. Despite the fact that a solar flare is imminent, we still have no plan for what would happen if the world's entire electrical grid suddenly collapsed.

The crazy thing is...it already has happened to us once back when the telegraph was the only electrical thing people had! Back then it was no big deal — although rather expensive as all the telegraph wire had to be replaced, but think of what would happen now!

Food production would halt, governments would be unable to communicate, and people would be left to their own devices and act out of fear!

Think of all the crazy people you know or see on TV who have been stockpiling for years for this type of thing to happen? You're now at their mercy. Scary thought, right? Check out the video below for more consequences of this game changing event.

Creepy Little Samara Haunts the New Poster for RINGS; New Trailer Coming This Week

creepy-little-samara-haunts-the-new-poster-for-rings-and-new-trailer-coming-this-week

Samara will be back to kill more people in her latest sequel Rings. We have a new poster featuring the character giving everything she's got to look as terrifying as possible. The thing is... we've seen it all before. People watch her amateur film school art project, and it's so bad that seven days later they die.

Don't get me wrong, I love this horror franchise, and the first film was freakin' great! I just don't think this new sequel is going to give us anything different from what we've already seen, except this one will use technology beyond VHS tapes.

Oh yeah! There's also going to be a new trailer coming this week!

A new chapter in the beloved RING horror franchise.  A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it.  She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…

Rings is being directed by F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) from a script by David Loucka, Jacob Estes and Akiva Goldsman. The moive stars Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden, Bonnie Morgan, and Vincent D’Onofrio

Samara will crawl out of movie theater screens when the film is released on February 3rd. You can watch the first trailer for the film here.

In 2016, Marvel Studios Kicked DC Films' Ass — And It Wasn't Even Close

In a perfect world, both Marvel Studios and DC Films would release movies that are equally enjoyable, each exploring rich thematic territory and taking a different stylistic approach to their storytelling to give audiences a sweeping selection of options when they watch mega-budget superhero films. And in discussing a “perfect world” scenario, we might as well throw in the idea that in that situation, fans would react in a level-headed and reasonable fashion to the fact that not everyone shares their opinion about those movies. But we live in a world in which a vocal subset of fans react as if the end of the world has arrived when critics don’t like a movie they’ve been looking forward to for years, and one in which some people refuse to accept the idea that they can appreciate movies from multiple studios at once. There’s a “line in the sand” mentality that’s become more fortified than ever this year, so instead of attempting to convince people that it’s perfectly acceptable to enjoy films from different studios, I’ll lean into the divisiveness, throw tact to the wind and tell it like it is: Marvel Studios absolutely dominated DC Films last year.

To be clear, I don’t mean financial domination. But just for kicks, let’s break down the box office numbers real quick before we get into the meat of this article. Combined, DC’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad made $1.61 billion. Captain America: Civil War made $1.1 billion by itself, and adding the $657 million Doctor Strange has made since its release in November brings Marvel Studios’ combined total to $1.81 billion for 2016. So even if you’re just looking at this as a numbers game (which, why would you, unless you’re a studio executive or a stockholder?), Marvel still “won” in 2016.

I’m much more interested in the creative side of the equation. I’m talking about how one studio made two movies last year that told their stories in coherent fashion, and one made two jumbled messes that don’t hold up to the most basic scrutiny. Sure, DC Films is fighting an uphill battle — but it’s the studio’s own fault for being in this position in the first place. It’s no secret that Warner Bros. hasn’t been doing so hot lately, so in a desperate maneuver for big hits (and perhaps some sort of ego-driven statement about doing things differently than his competitors), the studio’s president decided to haphazardly introduce all of the DC heroes in one movie before giving them their real team-up movie and then spinning them off into individual films. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, he decided to introduce a separate team of villains/antiheroes in an entirely different movie, but instead of letting his filmmakers work how they wanted to, he and his executives reportedly meddled so much that the films became the new gold standard of what a “made by committee” movie looks and feels like.

All films are subjective, and everyone is obviously encouraged to have their own opinions about movies. But there are some aspects of a film that can be objectively judged by their effectiveness, and when it comes to the fundamental communication of information from the filmmakers to the audience, DC Films blew it last year. This isn’t to say that Marvel has been perfect, because they haven’t. Zemo’s plan in Civil War is nearly as convoluted as Lex Luthor’s in BvS. But the biggest difference between the two, at least as I see it, comes down to characterization. We understand why the Marvel characters react to situations the way they do. It’s in line with their personalities from the comics, and more importantly (and this is crucial), the filmmakers give us enough insight into their characters in the text of the films themselves that we don’t have to solely rely on outside comic knowledge to justify their decisions. The same can’t quite be said of the DC characters, at least in the two movies from 2016. Zack Snyder’s take on Superman is not the same Superman we know from the comics, and that’s fine; a new interpretation is welcome, but when you combine that with objectively shoddy storytelling, it’s easy to see why Batman v Superman doesn’t work for a lot of people. And while it’s possible David Ayer may have been able to make a great Suicide Squad movie if given a reasonable schedule and left to his own devices, that’s not what happened. The behind-the-scenes troubles of that film have been heavily publicized, so there’s no use in beating a dead horse by bringing them up again.

2016 was a divisive year in this country, and the comic book movie fandom community didn’t escape that divisiveness. I’ll continue to push for the idea of fans putting down their pitchforks, taking a step back, and looking at these films as individual pieces of storytelling rather than being excited about the idea of simply seeing some of their favorite comic book characters on screen (regardless of the overall quality of the films in which those characters appear), but the chasm has grown so large that at times it’s felt like a lost cause. So instead of pleading for a logical response to these films, I couldn’t help but take the opportunity to point out that just about any way you look at it — regardless of complaints about critics’ imagined bias favoring one over the other — the truth might hurt, but on the big screen, Marvel straight up kicked DC’s ass last year.

Ryan Reynolds Says There Are Outlines and Stories for a Number of DEADPOOL Films

Ryan Reynolds is strapped in and ready to ride the Deadpool movie roller coaster for as long as the studio wants to keep making Deadpool films. In a recent interview with Variety, the actor talked about wanting to get Hugh Jackman to reprise his Wolverine role in a Deadpool movie and also reveals that they already have several different outlines and stories to tell for the character beyond the sequel that is currently in development. He said:

"I would love to play Deadpool for as long as they would let me play Deadpool. We have outlines and stories for a number of different films.
"...I have no idea if I can change [Jackman’s] mind [about a team up]. It’s the audience: I would exclusively exploit that relationship to get Hugh back for another one."

It's hard to speculate where Reynolds and his team could take the characters because there are so many stories to tell! They could take this in so many wild and crazy directions! I just hope that they are able to keep pumping out great Deadpool movies so that Reynolds and his team can tell all these stories that they have come up with.

Who knows if we'll ever see Wolverine in a Deadpool movie, though. Jackman is resistant as he's said:

"I’m hesitating, because I could totally see how that’s the perfect fit. But the timing may be wrong."

If it never happens, it would be a bloody shame that the timing never worked out. The good thing is, Jackman isn't completely saying no. He's just hesitant. Regardless, I'm looking forward to seeing how this film franchise plays out.

Video: Everything Wrong With UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS

Back when I was younger, I thought the Underworld series was pretty badass and that Underworld: Rise of the Lycans was the best of them all. Having seen it again a couple years ago...I now only hold one of those opinions, and I'm glad CinemaSins is backing me up on the claim that Rise of the Lycans isn't that great of a movie. Then again, I'm sure I could've found validation of that anywhere I looked. Check out their breakdown of what makes this movie awful below.

Beware of Evil Witches in the Trailer for Katee Sackhoff's DON'T KNOCK TWICE

I've got a trailer here for a new horror thriller starring Katee Sackhoff (Oculus, Riddick, Battlestar Galactica) called Don't Knock Twice. This looks like it could be a fun and creepy horror movie as it deals with a vengeful demonic shape-shifting witch who is out for blood. Here's the synopsis:

“Knock once to wake her from her bed, twice to raise her from the dead…” So goes a disturbing urban legend involving an abandoned house supposedly inhabited by a vengeful, child-stealing witch. When troubled teen Chloe (Lucy Boynton) raps at the door one night, she has no idea the horror she’s about to unleash. Fleeing to the country home of her estranged mother (Katee Sackhoff)—a recovering addict who’s turned her life around to become a famous artist—Chloe must learn to trust the woman who gave her up years ago in order to stop the bloodthirsty, shape-shifting demon stalking them.

The film was directed by Caradog James (The Machine) and also stars Lucy Boynton (Miss Potter, Ballet Shoes, Mo) and Nick Moran (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). Don't Knock Twice is set to be released on VOD platforms February 3, 2017 through IFC Midnight.

Grandpa Loses Teeth Playing SPEAK OUT And Traumatizes Grandchildren

I didn't think any Christmas video was going to top Alexa trying to play porn for a little kid, but I was so wrong. This old man losing his teeth while playing the hot new family game Speak Out is the funniest thing you will see today, I guarantee it! The whole situation is elevated by the fact that his grandchildren notice before anyone else and start screaming because they think something is wrong with grandpa!

Check out the hilariousness below. Has anyone played this game? I played once and never again because I was super uncomfortable with the amount of drool everyone was shooting out.

Woody Harrelson Could Be Playing Han Solo's Mentor in the STAR WARS Standalone Film

Woody Harrelson joining a Star Wars movie?! That's something I didn't see coming at all, but according to Variety, he's in early talks with Lucasfilm about possibly joining the standalone Han Solo movie!

The report says that he's the top choice to play Han Solo's mentor, so we'll get to meet the man who helped teach Solo everything he knows about the smuggling business... That's pretty cool! It seems like a role that Harrelson could fit right into.

If Harrelson ends up being cast in the film, he will join Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, and Emilia ClarkePhil Lord and Chris Miller are directing the film, and I couldn't be more excited to see what they do with it and how all these actors bring their characters to life.

One of the producers on the film is Allison Shearmur, who also worked on The Hunger Games films, so it seems like she's eager to work with Harrelson again. Production on the Han Solo film is expected to start later this month, and it's set for release on May 25, 2018.

What do you all think about the possibility of Harrelson joining the film?

RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER — 3 New Clips and a Featurette for You to Watch

0
0

If you're looking forward to watching Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, I've got three new clips from the film and a featurette for you to watch.

The first clip centers on Alice and her allies as they battle a horde of zombies from the top of a skyscraper. The second clip shows Alice and her team being caught by Wesker as they are sneaking around, so he makes things rough for them by reversing the polarity of the turbine. In the final clip, Alice is being tracked by Wesker and the Red Queen as she is headed to Raccoon City. As for the featurette, it focuses on Ruby Rose's character Abigail.

Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity's final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse. In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella's impending attack, this will be Alice's most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will be released on January 27, 2017.

Michael Keaton Bluntly Explains Why He Passed on BATMAN FOREVER

0

Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever and Batman & Robin films don't get a lot of love from fans. Why? Because they kinda sucked. It's a shame that Warner Bros. took the film franchise in this weird and cartoonish direction. What Tim Burton was doing with the franchise was great! It's what many fans wanted to see at the time. Unfortunately, that's not how things turned out.

Of course, Warner Bros. wanted to keep Michael Keaton on board ,but when he read the script for Batman Forever he ran away. During a recent interview with THR, Keaton said:

"[The script] sucked. The script never was good. I couldn't understand why he wanted to do what he wanted to do. ... I knew it was in trouble when [Schumacher] said, 'Why does everything have to be so dark?'"

Yeah, with a statement like that, you wonder what the studio was thinking! The character is known as The Dark Knight, and he was wondering why everything had to be so dark?! He was obviously a fan of the classic 1960s TV series, which is great! But, the character was way past that Batman brightness when Schumacher jumped in on the franchise. Burton made sure of that.

I'm just happy that Keaton didn't stay on the franchise for the money. He could have easily stuck around for another big paycheck, but he decided to make the right decision and leave. This is what we were left with...

DEADPOOL Creator Rob Liefeld Teams Up With Akiva Goldsman to Develop EXTREME UNIVERSE Films

0
0

Deadpool, Cable, and X-Force creator Rob Liefeld is about to take his characters from his Extreme Universe and bring them to the big screen with the help of Academy Award-winning writer Akiva Goldsman (The Dark Tower) and producer Graham King (Tomb Raider).

For those of you not familiar with Extreme Universe, it consists of nine comic books published by Liefeld's Extreme Studios. There are over 100 characters to play with, and the main ones include characters such as Bloodwulf, Kaboom, Bloodstrike, Brigade, Lethal, Re-Gex, Nitro-Gen, and Cybrid. Here's a brief description:

The Extreme universe is much like our own with the exception of Hyper Beings, those with what would be considered super powers. Due to these beings existence, several events in history played out differently, though their outcomes were relatively the same. Also, the existence of alien species and empires is known by the people of Earth, though they currently do not possess the technology to be part of universal politics.

This could be an awesome movie universe if handled properly, and so far it seems like the right people are involved. Liefeld said in a statement:

"Over the past nearly 25 years, since launching Image Comics, I’ve been lucky enough to see the power of these stories and characters as they’ve resonated with several generations of comic book fans. To now be able to work with Akiva Goldsman and Graham King, who are powerhouses in their own right, to bring these compelling characters and conflicts to life on the big screen is nothing short of a dream come true!"

King added:

"Rob has an uncanny ability to create unique stories with unforgettable characters and EXTREME UNIVERSE is no exception. These stories are fantastic and I couldn’t imagine better partners on this project than [Chairman] Mark [Gao] and his team at Fundamental Films."

It's going to be awhile before we see any of these films come to fruition, but I'm looking forward to seeing how they turn out!

Review: SILENCE Is Unlike Anything Martin Scorsese Has Made Before

0
0

I’m a huge fan of director Martin Scorsese's films. If you’ve seen his work, then you know the guy has a certain signature style that makes his films unique. Well, his latest film, Silence, is completely different from anything he’s ever done before in terms of the story and how it is presented. He threw his signature style out the window for this film and gave us one of the best and most thought-provoking films that he’s ever made. It’s like he completely reinvented himself as a filmmaker for Silence, and I was completely blown away!

Silence was a stunning, beautifully made film that told an utterly brutal story of faith being tested to the absolute extremes. The film is brutal in both its sense of suffering and violence as well as its silence and meditative stillness. For those of you who have faith in something, I’m sure it’s been tested in different ways throughout your life. I know mine has, but it’s never been tested like what we see in this film. I honestly don’t know what I would do in the situation that these Christian missionaries find themselves in.

Silence is based on the 1966 novel by Shusaku Endo, and the story follows two Christian missionaries who travel to Japan on a journey to search for their missing mentor who is said to have apostatized. This is during a time in the 17th century when Christianity was outlawed in Japan and the presence of missionaries was forbidden.

On the moment of arrival, the two missionaries, played by Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver, are thrust into a situation where Japanese Christians are begging for priests to teach them, and they are sent into hiding. What follows is an intense story of seeing these Christians hunted down, tortured, and killed. As this is happening the missionaries are trying to hold on to their faith and are forced to make difficult choices with consequences of life or death.

The attention to detail in bringing this old world of Japan back to life to tell this story left me in awe. Scorsese and his creative team didn't miss any details, and they made sure that this movie felt 100% authentic. I also have to mention that the cinematography was absolutely beautiful.

Garfield, Driver, and Liam Neeson all give tremendous performances. They really had to sink deep into the characters they play in this story. I don’t even know what they had to do to prepare themselves for these characters, but damn… they explode with power and despair on screen. The film also has an insanely talented supporting Japanese cast including Tadanobu Asano, Shin'ya Tsukamoto, Yôsuke Kubozuka, Issei Ogata, and Yoshi Oida.

Scorsese has been developing this film for over 28 years, and he finally made it happen. He should be proud of the end result, because this film is a masterful work of art that is incredibly powerful. This isn’t the kind of film that you can categorize as liking or not liking, it’s a contemplative experience that you will take with you after you leave the theater.

Premiere Date Set for the Fifth and Final Season of BATES MOTEL

premiere-date-set-for-the-fifth-and-final-season-of-bates-motel

A&E's Bates Motel is one of my favorite shows on TV, and it's coming to an end with its fifth and final season. If you haven't been watching, you've been missing out on a crazy demented and twisted series.

The show focuses on young Norman Bates and his psychological breakdown into insanity. The end of last season left me speechless, and I'm incredibly curious to see how the story plays out in this next season and how it ultimately comes to a close.

Thanks to EW, we know that the season five premiere date will be on February 20th at 10pm on A&E. The plan has always been a five-season run for the series, and I'm so happy that it succeeded and executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin have been able to see it through to the end.

The series stars Freddie Highmore as Norman and Vera Farmiga as Norma, and they give some of the best performances you'll see on TV!

One thing that we know about season five is that will star Rihanna in the role of Marion Crane, who was played by Janet Leigh in Alfred Hitchcock's original film Psycho. We all know where this is heading!
