DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Teaser Image - Revolution

Fox has released a teaser photo for Matt Reeve's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Looks like the apes can shoot guns now. The image came with the following tag line:

Evolution becomes revolution.

The sequel will pick up where Rise of the Planet of the Apes left off. There are no details on the story or plot. We all know what the outcome will be; this is just the ride that's going to take us there. Here's a little synopsis:

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” continues the story of how ultra-intelligent simian Caesar (Andy Serkis) presides over the fall of human civilization. After the apes break out of their facility, a virus breaks out that causes the collapse of human society. The new project is taking the story to the next level, with the apes on the path to emerge as society’s new rulers.

The screenplay is being written by Scott Z. Burns, Amanda Silver, and Rick Jaffa, and I hope Reeve does a solid job bringing the movie to life. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set to be released on Memorial Day 2014.

Guillermo del Toro Talks PACIFIC RIM and JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

$

Fan favorite filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is known for his awesome movies and having a hand in developing several film projects, some some of which he was supposed to direct. We all want to see more movies from the director, and hopefully Pacific Rim will put him on track to do that. He recently sat down for an interview with The Huffington Post. In it he talks about his career, not directing a movie since 2008, making Pacific Rim and wanting to make Justice League Dark.

When they announced that Del Toro would be directing Pacific Rim, I thought it would be one of those many films that he attached himself too that would just fall part like all of the other ones he's tried to make recently. Luckily it actually happened, and it looks like an amazing movie! When asked about a lot of the films he's been attached to over the years he said,

Yeah, but it's funny: a lot of the attachments that are announced are not real. A lot of them are -- I'm not denying it. But a lot of them happen -- like, I was attached to Dreamworks three years ago and I've worked on four movies .

Just because he hasn't directed a movie since 2008 doesn't mean he hasn't been working on making films because he has.

No. As a director, true. But, I gave two years of those four years to "The Hobbit" and one year to "At the Mountains of Madness." And I thought, in both cases, that they were going to be the next movie. You don't control this.

He goes on to say that he never wants to go four years without making a movie again.

I don't want to ever go another four more years without directing if I can help it. But, it may happen. I like very much taking those movies serially -- and putting a year of pre-production and design and put all the love that is needed. And a thing like "Pacific Rim" is a huge design.

You would think a director would get a little rusty after not making a film in so long, but not for Del Toro, he describes it as like riding a bike. When he started on Pacific Rim he was ready, and he ended up finishing shooting under budget and ahead of schedule, which is an impressive feat for any director!

You know, it's funny. The first two days of shoots, I prepared those two days more than ever except maybe my first movie. Because I wanted to not have any hitch. So, the first two days of shoots, I was half a day ahead of schedule. I was not rusty, you know? At the end of the movie, we were four days under schedule. And we were severely under budget -- we were able to allocate that budget into more of the effects. So it was very important for me to have that movie be a fiscal exercise on my craft as much as an artistic endeavor. I wanted to prove to myself that you don't get rusty -- that you can go right back to the bike and ride it.

That's a lot like my personality. I'm not a procrastinator, and I always want to stay ahead of the game. The director went on to say that there's going to be a lot of the stuff in the film that you think is CG, but it's actually real. He also went on to say that no one has seen a movie like this before.  He then went on to talk about the DC Comics Justice League Dark film he's trying to get made,

It is a probability. But, see, the problem is that a lot of people get a hold of things before they are a reality. Like, for a while, people were talking about the "Dr. Strange" movie. I said, "I'm not involved. At all." And then they were talking about another movie and two or three times I had to say, "I'm not involved." In this case, I hope it happens.

So that's encouraging! Hopefully it works out! Del Toro is such a talented director that makes the kind of movies we want to see, and I hope he gets to direct more of the projects he wants to do! It looks like Pacific Rim is just the beginning for Del Toro.

TWINS Sequel On the Way with Arnold, DeVito and Eddie Murphy

If it's not a remake, it's a sequel. Hollywood is going back to the well for one of the most unlikely films I could imagine, Twins. The 1988 hit starred Danny Devito and Arnold Schwarzenneger as twins. This new film will be called Triplets, and none other than Eddie Murphy has been added to the mix.

THR reports that Josh Gad (Project X, Broadway’s The Book of Mormon) and Ryan Dixon have made a deal to pen the film for Universal and Montecito Picture Co. Murphy will supposedly play an unknown third brother in the new film. Gad and Dixon are going to write the treatment, and then Dixon will oversee scriptwriting duties.

Stay tuned for more news on this project as it develops!

Quentin Tarantino May Retire After 10 Films!

$

Quentin Tarantino is a master director with an encyclopedic knowledge of film. Tarantino XX 10-Disc is arriving on Blu-ray on November 20, and his latest opus, Django Unchained, arrives in theates on Christmas Day. In a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed that he is contemplating retirement, and it may be sooner than many fans would like to hear.

Tarantino was interviewed by Playboy, and this is what he had to say:

I just don’t want to be an old-man filmmaker. I want to stop at a certain point. Directors don’t get better as they get older. Usually the worst films in their filmography are those last four at the end. I am all about my filmography, and one bad film f*cks up three good ones … When directors get out-of-date, it’s not pretty.

I’m on a journey that needs to have an end and not be about me trying to get another job. I want this artistic journey to have a climax. I want to work toward something. You stop when you stop, but in a fanciful world, 10 movies in my filmography would be nice. I’ve made seven. If I have a change of heart, if I come up with a new story, I could come back. But if I stop at 10, that would be okay as an artistic statement.

Each of Tarantino's films make a statement, and have a climax. His films are also very personal, so it makes sense he would want to end his career in the same manner.

Tarantino then went on to talk about his casting process, and how he cast Django Unchained

I met six different actors and had extensive meetings with all of them, and I went in-depth on all of their work,” Tarantino tells Playboy (in the issue that will be on stands Nov. 20). “Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, Terrence Howard, M.K. Williams [from HBO's Boardwalk Empire], Tyrese. They all appreciated the material, and I was going to put them through the paces, make them go off against one another and kind of put up an obstacle course. And then I met Jamie and realized I didn’t need to do that.” So what was it about Foxx that led Tarantino to cast him? “He was the cowboy… Forget the fact that he has his own horse — and that is actually his horse in the movie. He’s from Texas; he understands. …He understood what it’s like to be thought of as an ‘other.’”

Remember in 1991 When Nintendo Was Destroying the Youth of America?

$

When the Nintendo Entertainment System was released, I didn't have one of my own, so I was over at my friend's house all day and all night playing video games. It was awesome! Except for the one time when we were on the verge of beating Zelda, and I forgot to hold down the Reset button to save it before I turned off the system and lost all our progress. That sucked.

Anyway, I don't think my parents ever thought it was destroying me. It was stuff like Nintendo that shaped me into the proud geek that I am today. Apparently in 1991, other parents were taking their poor kids to therapy sessions because of the negative effects they thought Nintendo was having on them.

An old news special report has surfaced online that I thought was absolutely hilarious. It's funny to think that in 1991 parents thought video games had gone too far, with the awesome new graphics, peer pressure, exploitative marketing, and high prices. There are a lot of great things about this video that I'm sure you'll get a laugh at.

In 1991, local newsstation reports Nintendo released their successor to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in America. But the parents weren't too happy about it. The parents thought Nintendo was exploiting their children into buying new and expensive hardware for new games when the improvements to the new hardware were obvious.

These same 90s parents must have freaked the hell out when the Internet came into play. We've sure come a long way since PacMan.

I think it's safe to say that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) would be an incredible choice to take on the role of The Doctor in the Doctor Who franchise. It will most likely never happen, as Cumberbatch is becoming a big star. But here's an awesome piece of fan art by Alice X. Zhang that gives us a fun glimpse of what he might look like as the Time Lord.

Here's a good little sci-fi short film, called In the Pines, written and directed by Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell. Here's the plot suammary...

A young woman, convinced she has experienced an encounter with the extraterrestrial, becomes fixated on re-establishing contact in this striking study of the paranormal and the human psyche.

First Look and Synopsis for THE LAST EXORCISM II

CBS Films has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to The Last Exorcism Part II, which was produced by StudioCanal. Eli Roth produced the sequel that was directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly from a screenplay he wrote with Damien Chazelle.

The Last Exorcism was released in 2010, and I thought it was decent horror flick. I guess there are plenty of people in the world for evil spirits to possess, so why not make a sequel! The movie picks up where the first film left off. Here's the synopsis:

Teenage Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found dirty and terrified in the woods having just escaped a demon ritual in which a cult helped her give birth to a demon baby.  Confused and scared, Nell is examined by doctors but she doesn’t remember much about the previous few months except that as a result of everything, her family is now dead.  She is moved into Davreaux – a girls’ halfway house in New Orleans, where she will try to put her life back together with the help of the therapist, Frank Merle.  She even begins to date a boy named Chris and starts a job at a local hotel.  But something doesn’t feel right to Nell.  She is being sought after by the demon who possessed her in the first LAST EXORCISM.  It wants Nell, but in a different way than before…

So why do these evil demon spirits always go after the same girl? Is there a priest in the house that can explain?

TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D First Clip of a Kill Happy Leatherface

The first film clip of Texas Chainsaw 3D is out, and as you'd expect, it features a kill happy Leatherface running through a creepy graveyard in the night with his chainsaw revving away trying to kill his next victims who have run into a barn. Silly humans, wood doors are no match for a chainsaw!

Here's the Synopsis:

Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper's 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family - or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion's dank cellars...

The movie is a direct sequel to the original movie, and it comes out on January 4th, 2013. Several of the original cast members from the first movie have retured for this one including John Dugan who will reprise his role as Grandfather and Marilyn Burns, Bill Moseley, and Gunnar Hansen. It also stars Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde, Sue Rock, Scott EastwoodTrey Songz, Keram Malicki-Sanchez, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry, Paul Rae, and Richard Riehle.  Check out the clip!

Jane Goldman to Write PINOCCHIO for Tim Burton and Robert Downey Jr.

$

X-Men: First Class writer Jane Goldman is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to write the script for Tim Burton and Robert Downey Jr.'s live action film adaptation of Pinocchio. Goldman is a solid writer who has also worked on films like Kick-Ass, The Woman in Black, Stardust, and X-Men: Days Of Future Past

As of right now, no deal has been locked down for Burton, Downey Jr. or Goldman, but they are all interested in making it, and they are talking to the studio about it. According to THR, "Goldman's hiring is meant to bring the courtship to a close and initiate commitments as she will be incorporating Downey's notes."

It would be so cool to see these talents work together, and it looks like it's going to happen. I am so happy to see that Burton is willing to work with another lead actor other than Johnny Depp

Downey would play the woodcarver Geppetto, who creates a puppet that comes to life, and dreams of becoming a real boy. As you know he's quite the liar, and every time he lies his nose grows. When Pinocchio goes missing, Geppetto embarks on a quest to reunite with his missing marionette.

Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) wrote the first draft of the script, but they might be starting from scratch with Goldman. Pinocchio is a great story that is both inspirational and terrifying. I'm looking forward to seeing Burton's take on the story.

The image in the preview was created by Sara Kristiina Albrecht, and though it kind of has a Burton feel to it, I doubt it's what Burton's character will look like.

THE WATCH Blu-ray Review

$

0

The Watch Blu-ray hit shelves this week from Fox Home Entertainment. Directed by Akiva Schaffer the film stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Rosemarie DeWitt, Will Forte, and Richard Ayoade. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg penned the story that follows a group of suburban dads form a neighborhood watch group who uncover a plot to overthrow the Earth.

As far as sci-fi comedies go this is fairly mediocre, but what makes it worthwhile to me is the cast. You might think that Stiller or Vaughn would be the standout stars of this movie, but in fact Ayoade and Hill really are the scene stealers in The Watch. Ayoade is relatively unknown to U.S. audiences, but is well known across the pond for starring in The IT Crowd and directing Submarine. In this movie he plays Jamarcus, one of the members of the watch team, and he injects some of his dry British humor into the film. I highly advise you to check out IT Crowd on Netflix Instant today.

Vaughn and Stiller are pretty much playing the same characters that they do in every film they star. I for one can never get enough of them, and would rather see one of their films any day over an Adam Sandler movie. There are some pretty funny moments in Costco where Stiller's character works and on their stakeouts. Much of the comedic moments are ruined because the scenes were shown in trailers and clips before the movie was released.

The sound quality is pretty standard on this disc, with a DTS Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. Most new films are shot to look great on Blu-ray, and this is no exception, There are some decent special features included, which make this movie worth picking up.

  • Deleted Scenes: There are a total of 12 deleted scenes included in this section. Many of them are funny, but it is clear they were left out for a reason.
  • Gag Reel: If I remember this was shown during the credits of the theatrical release, regardless it is hilarious.
  • Jonah Alternate Takes: If you have ever wanted to see Jonah Hill doing ad libbing, then here is your chance.
  • Watchmakers: Standard feature that takes us behind the scenes and includes some cast interviews.
  • Alien Invasions and You: What would you do during an Alien invasion? Well that same question is posed to some of the cast and crew, and this is their response.
  • Casting the Alien: This is the silliest bonus feature I have seen on a disc. It is a fake interview of the alien from the film. Like we really needed that!
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Sneak Peeks

Thor and Malekith Do Battle in New THOR 2 Set Photos and Video

A new series of set photos and video from Thor: The Dark World have hit the internet, thanks to Splash News Online. They feature Thor (Chris Hemsworth) locked in an intense climactic battle with the villain Malekith (Christopher Eccleston). We recently got our first look at The Dark Elves in the film, and I'm loving the designs. I'm looking forward to seeing some actual official photos from the film. With all of these set photos leaking out, Marvel might as well release something official from the Alan Taylor directed film.

Marvel Studios’ “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano and Jaimie Alexander with Rene Russo & Anthony Hopkins as Odin, “Thor: The Dark World” is directed by Alan Taylor, produced by Kevin Feige, from a story by Don Payne (credit not final) and screenplay by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (credit not final) and is based on Marvel’s classic Super Hero Thor, who first appeared in the comic book “Journey into Mystery” #83 in August, 1962. “Thor: The Dark World” is presented by Marvel Studios. The executive producers are Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Victoria Alonso, Craig Kyle and Nigel Gostelow. The film releases November 8, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

In addition to “Thor: The Dark World”, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on more iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel (title TBA) on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

INGRESS: Google's New Game Is All Around You

$

Google pulled the cover off their new project today, and its an interesting experiment. Titled Ingress, the game (out for Android today and iOS soon) centers around you hacking into nodes spread out all over the world. Using their extensive mapping tech, these nodes populate real world locations. All someone has to do is be in the immediate vacinity and hit a button to hack in. Gameplay wise its pretty simple, but the guys and gals over at Niantic Labs, the developers of Ingress, say that there is more complexity underneath.

Teams are split between Enlightened and Resistance. The nodes, which are portals to a world within our world, are being fought over by said factions. One wants to show and spread the word about the portals, the other wants to keep the closed for our protection. When one side claims 3 nearby nodes (without any opposing ones nearby), a small territory forms. The more territories your side has, the higher your score.

When out in the field you can only see what's around you, but if you happen to be by a computer you can see the whole map and really get a bird's-eye view of the conflict. It's an interesting idea, and while I wouldn't exactly go out to a library just to hack a node, I might be inclined to pull the app up and see if any are nearby while I'm out and about. I assume that's how most people would play, unless they have some other layers of gameplay to really pull me into the experience. Peep the trailer down below and let us know what you think!

New Trailer for ON THE ROAD with Hedlund, Adams, Mortenson, and Dunst

"Bless me father, for I will sin."

Here's a great new trailer for the Francis Ford Coppola-produced period coming of age film On The Road, which was directed by Walter Salles. I didn't really have any interest in seeing this movie until this trailer came along and showed me that it actually looks like a good film.

The movie is based on the book written by Jack Kerouac, and it has a solid cast actors that includes Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Sam Riley (13), Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Amy Adams (The Fighter), Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man), Viggo Mortenson (LOTR) and more.

Here's the Synopsis:

After his father's death in the late 1940s, 24-year-old aspiring writer Sal Paradise meets 20-year-old ex-jailbird Dan Moriarty and his beautiful wife Marylou in New York. Dan is extremely charming and has a flexible moral code, and is as fascinated by Sal's obsession with writing as Sal is by the unfettered freedom of his lifestyle. The two men spend intense nights of drinking, dreaming of another world, and forming a friendship that will take them on a trip across America. After staying at Bull Lee’s place in Louisiana, Sal, Dean, and Marylou continue traveling - naked and utterly enjoying themselves.

The movie is set to get a limited release on December 21st in LA and NY. It will then expand to the rest of the country in January. There was something off about the previous trailers, but for some reason this one just hit me.

Here's some great Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles art created by Jeff Agala that he called Turtle Power! Agala has a fun art style that people seem to like. We've posted a lot of his stuff in the past, and we always seem to get positive feedback.

Seeing that a lot of us are TMNT fans, I thought you would appreciate these latest creations of is. Hopefully the movie in development by Paramount Pictures and Michael Bay ends up being a decently badass representation of these characters.
