We wrote about The Nerdwriter's latest video essay covering "passable" movies a little while back, but I just noticed we skipped writing about a different video essay he created. In this one, he looked at the groundbreaking anime film Akira from 1988. We've written extensively about that film here on the site over the years (here are 10 fun facts, for instance), but I don't think we've ever delved into the way the movie uses light. That's the entire focus of this video, and watching it might give you a better appreciation for the film:

Below you'll find some Stranger Things test footage of the animatronic head of the Demogorgon creature. As you'll see, it's awesomely terrifying. I love that they used some animatronics to bring this nightmarish monster to life in the series. It is also such a cool creature design! I also included some behind-the-scenes photos featuring the sculpt of the head and full costume tests.

After watching this video it seems like Shia LaBeouf would have made a better Lex Luthor than Jesse Eisenberg. The video features Labeouf hilariously tormenting Superman. it was created by Adeel of Steel and features scenes from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with the inclusion of LaBeouf from that motivation green screen video he previously made. I know we've seen that footage a ridiculous number of times, but seeing it used in this way has its fun moments.

Artist Fred Rambaud has created this awesome character design that mashes together Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy and Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Oh! And just as a little bonus, the weapon that he's holding is a Blunderbuss from the sci-fi film Looper. I love it when artists just go crazy with their fan art!

Fan-Made STAR WARS BABIES Animated Short Features Midichlorians as Characters

"Star Wars babies, may the force be with you."

Star Wars Babies is a dark fan-made animated short that amusingly focuses on several "baby" versions of classic Star Wars characters and the midichlorians that live within them. The short starts out innocently enough, but then it turns to the dark side after the midichlorian characters show up and can't really do anything to help anybody as bad things happen to several of the characters. The video was created by the cheeksdown YouTube channel and it includes a catchy tune that could easily get stuck in your head.

Everything Wrong With Ryan Reynolds' DEADPOOL

It's been awhile since I've posted and "Everything Wrong" episode from CinemaSins, but here's a recent video that they released breaking down everything that's wrong with the film in 16-minutes or less. If you've ever watched these videos then you know how ridiculously nitpicky they are. In this particular episode, they point out 90 "sins".

Deadpool. Yeah, he kind of sins the movie himself, but that wasn't going to stop us from trying. No we didn't get Ryan Reynolds to guest--we didn't even ask; we didn't want to do what other channels had already done (and done well). No hard feelings, Mr. Reynolds.

The video would have been a lot better had they managed to get Ryan Reynolds to narrate it! He previously joined in on the fun for Screen Junkies' Honest Trailer.

Here's a Machine Gun That Fires 120 Paper Airplanes Per Minute

When I was kid I used to spend a lot of time making paper airplanes. I remember even buying a book that showed you all the different kinds of paper airplanes that people could make. It was a lot of fun! Boy oh boy, I wish I would have had a paper airplane machine gun when I was a kid!

Dieter Michael Krone created an awesome machine gun called the PFM-A5 and. All you have to do is put in 200 sheets of A5 paper into the back of the gun, and it folds up and shoots out 120 paper airplanes per minute. I've gotta say... that pretty impressive.  You can see the machine gun in action below!

Here's a great trailer mashup that pits Paul Blart Mall Cop against zombies from Dawn of the Dead. The mashup is almost too perfect. I've never been a big fan of the Paul Blart movies but It seems to make sense to pit him against a zombie horde in another sequel. I'd totally watch that movie! The video comes from Digital Spectrum Studios.

Ben Affleck Says He Won't Do THE BATMAN If the Film Doesn't Come Together

$

It sounds like Ben Affleck's The Batman is far from a done deal. In fact, he's ready and willing to walk away from the film if it doesn't come together the way he wants it to. During a recent interview with The Guardian, Affleck said:

"It’s not a set thing and there’s no script. If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great I’m not going to do it.”

Good! Affleck has previously talked about his work on the film explaining that he's taking his time on it to make sure to get it right. Obviously, if he and his creative team can't crack a great story, he'll bow out of the project. He previously said:

"We still have to get a screenplay and get it together. I’m a real believer in not reverse engineering projects to meet a window or a date, but rather when you get the right story, the right idea, the right thing, then you make the movie. That’s what we’re doing, and I’m hoping to get that done. I’m spending a lot of time working on that, but also working on other stuff.
"If I could, there’s nothing I’d love more than to direct a stand-alone iconic, great Batman movie. But it’s been done. Chris Nolan did three really great movies. I’m mindful of that. I’m not in any hurry to jam the mediocre movie down the pipe. I really want to make sure, if we do it, we get the great version and one that’s worthy of tradition of guys like Tim Burton, Chris Nolan, and Christian Bale."

I really hope that he can figure it out, but he obviously hasn't seen anything that he's liked for it so far. If you ask me, he doesn't sound like he's very optimistic about it. He keeps saying he wants something great and that he doesn't want to write or direct anything that he doesn't think is "good enough to be made." If something great had been placed in front of him, he'd at least say that he has a story or idea that he want's to move forward with, but we haven't even seen that.

I hope he does come up with something, though, because I really think he's got it in him to make a great Batman film. If he does end up dropping out, I'd be curious to see how the studio would proceed without him.

Ridley Scott Explains Why He'll Never Make a Superhero Movie and Says Today's Cinema Is Bad

$

Ridley Scott has never really come across as a director who would want to make a superhero movie. Over the years he's been offered plenty of opportunities to direct a superhero film, but in a recent interview with Digital Spy, he explained why he's never taken the opportunity:

"Superhero movies are not my kind of thing - that's why I've never really done one. [I've been asked] several times, but I can't believe in the thin, gossamer tight-rope of the non-reality of the situation of the superhero."

He then went on to use Blade Runner as an example of comic book type movie that he's done, explaining:

"I've done that kind of movie - Blade Runner really is a comic strip when you think about it, it's a dark story told in an unreal world. You could almost put Batman or Superman in that world, that atmosphere, except I'd have a f**king good story, as opposed to no story!"

Well, I'm sure fans would love to see another Superman or Batman film is a "F**king good story"! The director goes on to express his concern about the current state and future of the film industry saying he thinks that "cinema mainly is pretty bad". He then said:

"I want to keep doing cinema and I hope it doesn't affect those of us who still keep making smart films. I'm hoping it doesn't affect me."

I seriously doubt that legendary filmmakers like Scott will be able to make their films until they retire because they are trusted filmmakers who have a proven record of making great movies.
