Lucasfilm's HAN SOLO Standalone Film Will Start Shooting in February

$

I've already seen Rogue One: A Star Wars Story twice, and I enjoyed it more the second time because I saw it in a theater full of real Star Wars fans. Press screening audiences can be a little lame sometimes. Anyway, I love what they did with this movie, and it got me even more excited for the other standalone films that Lucasfilm is developing.

The next standalone movie we will see is the Han Solo project being directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and it looks like they're going to start shooting it soon! During the UK premiere for Rogue One, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy talked to BBC's Lizo Mzimba about the film and revealed that it would start shooting in February!

"We're actually very close [to production]. We're going to start shooting in February."

There are no story details for the Han Solo film, but we know that it will take place prior to the events of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. After seeing Rogue One, I can see Lucasfilm and the creative team doing some extremely cool things that could tie it into A New Hope if they wanted to.

The movie stars Alden Ehrenreich as the young Han Solo, Donald Glover as the young Lando Calrissian, and Emilia Clarke in an unspecified lead female role. I'm sure we'll start to see more details about the film after it starts shooting. It will be released in theaters in 2018.

Review: PASSENGERS Isn't Quite the Movie the Trailers Claim It Is

$

Sony is purposefully obscuring a key factor of this movie that isn't so much a shocking reveal as it is the major driving force of the plot. This action occurs very early on in the film, but it's not even hinted at in any of the trailers, so if you don't want to know about it, stop reading now. Consider yourselves warned.

Passengers is a $150 million sci-fi film based on an original idea. It has slick production design, cool visual effects, and it features two of the biggest, hottest movie stars in the world in Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. It's a film that seemingly has everything going for it, but the film can't quite escape the feeling that it's less a modern-day blockbuster and more like a '90s movie you'd see in constant rotation on TNT. It has a handful of decent moments, but despite the efforts of everyone involved, there's a hurdle in the story the movie can't quite leap — and it's a doozy.

The film is set on a huge spaceship called the Avalon, which left Earth and is hurtling through the galaxy on its way to a colony planet called Homestead II. In the opening sequence, the ship sails through an asteroid field that it presumably wasn't expected to encounter; though the Avalon diverts a majority of its power to its forward-facing shields, it still gets rocked by a massive asteroid, which jars loose one of the hibernation pods containing one of the ship's 5,000 passengers. It belongs to an affable guy named Jim Preston (Pratt), who takes longer than what seems appropriate to discover that something has gone wrong and he's the only person who's awake. As he explores the ship and talks to its AI systems, Jim is horrified to discover that there's still 90 years to go before the ship reaches Homestead II. And he's all alone.

That's not exactly the scenario you remember from the ads, is it? The marketing hypes the movie as a soaring romance, using the line "there's a reason we woke up early" as the cornerstone for the trailers. You can probably see where this is going.

Jim, an engineer by trade, spends a year attempting to fix his hibernation pod, but it's no use. He's stuck. So he passes the time using the ship's many amenities, playing basketball and video games and drinking with an android bartender (Michael Sheen) in a bar that looks like it'd be right at home in The Shining's Overlook Hotel. It's like the earliest episodes of Will Forte's Fox TV series The Last Man on Earth, but not quite as anarchic. And like that show, Jim gets this close to killing himself because he can't handle the loneliness. But he notices a beautiful woman in a hibernation pod named Aurora Lane (Lawrence), and proceeds to digitally stalk her using the ship's computers. He becomes obsessed, watching video interviews with her, reading all of her work (she was a writer on Earth), and falling in love with her before he even meets her.

Here's where things get troublesome: Jim figures out how to wake her up. The concept haunts him, he knows it would be an atrocious thing to do, and he really struggles with it...but he ultimately does it anyway, and instead of owning up to it right away, he pretends like she was awoken accidentally just like he was. She's frantic about their situation at first, just like he was, but they slowly bond and fall in love.

The idea of Jim falling for Aurora without actually meeting her had potential. That was the movie commenting on how we can do the same thing in our own world thanks to the abundance of information about everyone online. Heck, many of you reading this have probably done this at some point in your lives: saw someone you thought was cute, looked them up on Facebook, read everything about them before talking to them, etc. But instead of doing something interesting with that notion — like maybe condemning that behavior by turning it on its head and having Aurora be somehow different than what she appears — she's exactly what she appears to be. She's Jennifer Lawrence.

So now we have a protagonist who has done something unforgivable, and we're expected to just sit back and be charmed as we watch these two screw their way across the galaxy, knowing that the woman is being lied to the entire time? Yikes. It's a tough ask of the audience, and Pratt and Lawrence are up to the challenge, but that's a massive moral problem right from the start. Other serious conflicts arise that I won't spoil which amp up the action, but none are more meaningful than that one, and once Jim makes his decision (which, again, is very early in the runtime), I don't think the movie ever fully recovers. There are some standout moments — a terrific set piece in a pool comes to mind, and the heat between the two leads works pretty well — and it gives the characters a couple of opportunities to try make things right, but in the end, Passengers is mostly just a predictable, run-of-the-mill movie that happened to get lucky when it came to casting.

Classic Episodes of UNSOLVED MYSTERIES Coming to Amazon With Updates

Classic episodes of Unsolved Mysteries are making their way back to your television. The Wrap reports that while the rebooted series (2008-2010) has been on Amazon for awhile now, FilmRise will now release updated versions of classic episodes to the streaming platform in 2017.

These updated episodes will show the original episode and then follow up with any new details regarding the mystery! That's pretty exciting, because I don't have the patience or energy to do advanced Google searching on my phone between episodes!

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I was obsessed with this show when I was younger! It would always creep me out and make me think someone was going to break into my house and murder me, but it's just so addictive! I can't wait to see some updates on mysteries that are sometimes 30 years old! On a side note, I had no idea the show ran new episodes from 1987 all the way to 2002. I'm guessing the show ended due to the passing of Robert Stack in 2003.

I would love to see the show return eventually, but who would make a good host?

Someone Edited 400 Versions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL Into One Linear Video

I'm guessing everyone has a favorite version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The story has been around for so long, and has been adapted so many times, that I imagine it's one of the best known stories in the country at this point, if not the world. I grew up watching Mickey's Christmas Carol, so that's my personal favorite, but I'd love to hear what your go-to version is in the comments.

In the meantime, though, a madman named Heath Waterman spent a year and a half editing over 400 versions of the story into one linear video, telling the story line by line with different versions for each line. And because the story is so popular, it all works — even when jumping from animation to slash fiction (yup) and cheesy TV episodes. It's really quite something, and an interesting way to lead into Christmas.

New Trailer for Doug Jones' Latest Horror Thriller BYE BYE MAN

new-trailer-for-doug-jones-latest-horror-thriller-bye-bye-man11

Doug Jones once again plays a creepy monster in a new horror film. His latest project is called Bye Bye Man, and it was inspired by the horror icons such as Freddy Kruger and the Slender Man. The title of the monster and film my sound a little cheesy, but it doesn't look like Jones' portrayal of the supernatural character will be.

The film is a chilling horror-thriller that "exposes the evil behind the most unspeakable acts committed by man" and it follows three college students who move into an old house off campus. In the process “they unwittingly unleash a supernatural entity known as The Bye Bye Man, who comes to prey upon them once they discover his name. The friends must try to save each other, all the while keeping The Bye Bye Man’s existence a secret to save others from the same deadly fate.”

The Bye Bye Man was directed by Stacy Title, and it also stars Carrie-Anne Moss (Jessica Jones, The Matrix) as a cop who is skeptical about what she being told about the Bye Bye Man until she starts to see things for herself. It looks like a fun horror film worth checking out if you’re a fan of the genre.

The film opens in theaters on January 13th, 2017.

Trailer Released for 2 Hour SENSE 8 Christmas Special

One of Netflix's most slept on shows makes its return December 23rd. The Wachowski-developed Sense 8 will debut its second season with a two hour Christmas special that looks to kick things into gear rather quickly for the upcoming season! Check out the trailer and continue on below...

I was a huge fan of the first season, but felt weird recommending it to friends because of the sheer amount of sexual content in it...and there's a lot. That's kind of the point though, and if you can make it through all that you'll enjoy a really interesting and solid science fiction series! I can't wait to see what they have in store for the second season.

If you're wondering why Netflix let such an odd show have a Christmas special, Lana Wachowski offers some explanation below.

Video: Nick Offerman Counts Down the New Year by Silently Sipping Whisky

If you've ever wanted to hang out with Parks and Recreation star Nick Offerman — and who hasn't? — this may be the closest you get. This video features Offerman sitting and silently sipping whisky in front of the Lagavulin distillery, staring directly at us through the camera as a New Year's party happens behind him. You may recall he did something similar last year in front of a fireplace.

I'm fascinated with this as a piece of marketing, because it's nearly impossible to find a company that is content with having someone sit in silence and simply drink the product as a way to try to sell it. I don't know about you, but watching this makes me want to go get a glass of whisky and sip it with him, so the ploy is clearly working. But even if you don't like whisky, you can...I don't know, maybe watch this and pretend you're sitting right there with him and tell him your craziest stories as practice for when you'll be telling them at holiday parties later on.

Universal Tournament Story Arc Announced for DRAGON BALL SUPER

As America plans for Dragon Ball Super to debut on Toonami, the Japanese are set to reveal a new story arc for the series! As you can see from the image, a lot has changed since you last watched the series!

While viewers initially said the reboot seemed "pointless" at the beginning of the series, they've really changed their tone since then. ANN says the new Japanese arc will focus on a "universal tournament," which seems to be a competition pitting multiple universes against each other in a tournament with severe consequences.

We still have a ways to go before we reach this point in the series, but if you're someone watching the dub you can expect more details and even a promotional trailer to drop at some point this weekend!

Two of the STAR WARS Franchise's Most Iconic Lightsaber Battles Get the Mondo Poster Treatment

We've featured the art of Kevin Tong a ton of times on this site, but he's just released what I consider to be two of the best pieces of his career thus far. Today, Acme Archives and Mondo have two new Star Wars-themed posters paying tribute to two of the original trilogy's most iconic lightsaber fights. The press release described them like this:

Cloud City Duel and Death Star II Duel feature two iconic showdowns between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader representing the two characters' duality with the light and dark side of the Force.

Personally, I like the one from Empire a lot more. I think it has a lot to do with the color scheme — the green and red in the other piece just seems a bit too Christmas-y to me. Head to mondotees.com to see if there are any left, but by the time you're reading this, they'll probably be sold out. Oh well — there's always eBay!

Awkward and Crazy Old-School STAR WARS Interviews You've Never Seen

Screen Junkies has released a fantastic video that points out several old-school Star Wars cast interviews from the '70s and '80s that many of you have probably never seen or forgotten about. The interviews highlighted in the video are both awkward and kind of crazy.

Some of the clips featured include Mark Hamill not knowing how to describe the plot of the film and saying how he is sick of talking about Star Wars. Then there's Billy Dee Williams having no idea who the characters in the film were, Peter Cushing trying to figure out what a Grand Moff was, and then there's David Prowse painfully being a little racist as he talks about James Earl Jones' Darth Vader voice. It also fun to hear the cast talk about the franchise and how the story would continue in the future.

If you've got some time to spare definitely check this out because I think you'll all get a kick out of it.

Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Alan Arkin star in a great-looking new film called Going in Style, which was directed by Zach Braff. In the film, the three actors play lifelong friends who team up to plan and pull off a bank robbery. The first trailer has been released and with a cast like this, you can expect to be entertained. The movie is pretty much a remake of the 1979 film that starred George Burns, Art Carney, and Lee Strasberg.

According to the story summary, the characters Willie, Joe and Al "decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow for the first time in their lives when their pension fund becomes a corporate casualty. Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, the three risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money."

The film also has a great supporting cast that includes Ann-Margret (Tommy, Carnal Knowledge) as Annie, "a grocery cashier who’s been checking Al out in more ways than one"; Joey King (Wish I Was Here) as Joe’s "whip-smart granddaughter, Brooklyn"; Matt Dillon (Crash) as an FBI Agent named Hamer, Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) as "the guys’ lodge buddy, Milton"; John Ortiz (Silver Linings Playbook) plays Jesus, "a man of unspecified credentials who agrees to show the guys the ropes", and Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy) as "Joe’s former son-in-law, Murphy, whose pot clinic connections may finally prove useful."

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE Gets a Hilarious New How It Should Have Ended Video

The gang over at How It Should Have Ended has hilariously rewritten multiple different outcomes of how Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope could have played out. My favorite part of this is when Obi-Wan Kenobi comes face to face with Darth Vader, the way that is handled is just too perfect. Everything they have alternate versions for in the video are pretty funny, though, and I think it'll give Star Wars fans a good laugh.

How Star Wars Should Have Ended (Special Edition). Years ago the classic Star Wars HISHE caught the eye of the internet and was the episode that launched our channel into life. It holds a very special place in our hearts. But as the years passed we started seeing requests for a "special edition" since the original didn't quite match the style of our later HISHE episodes. And since it's Star Wars season, we thought now would be a fun time to give the old episode the George Lucas updates she deserves. Enjoy!

There Are Rumors of a Possible Young Luke Skywalker Standalone STAR WARS Film

there-are-rumors-of-a-possible-young-luke-skywalker-standalone-star-wars-film1

It's no secret that Lucasfilm is developing several standalone Star Wars film projects. They are all in various stages of production, but right now, the only we know is officially happening is the Han Solo movie, which starts shooting next year. There was also a Boba Fett film in production as well, but Lucasfilm put it on the back burner after Fantastic Four director Josh Trank left the project.

Ever since Lucasfilm announced they would be making a bunch of standalone movies there have been rumors of films revolving around Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and now a possible film about a young Luke Skywalker.

The news came from a report at THR that was talking about Felicity Jones' Rogue One contract. They say that she has a sequel option, which is very interesting because Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said that there would be no Rogue One sequel. The sequel to Rogue One is technically A New Hope

There's no word on how she would be utilized in a sequel, but according to inside sources, there's speculation that it could involve a young Luke Skywalker film. I don't know how that would fit with Jones' character of Jyn Erso, but it would obviously be a Rogue One prequel film. Of course, there's always a chance they included the sequel in her contract just in case they found a story to use her in somewhere down the road.

As for a Luke Skywalker movie, will we actually get to see what it was like for him to grow up on the boring planet of Tatooine? Luke hanging out with his friends like Biggs Darklighter at the Toshi Station and farming with his Uncle Owen? Not sure how Jyn would fit into that, but if this turns out to be true, then they must have some kind of idea for a story to tell. Would any of you even be interested in a film focused on Luke's life on Tatooine? I personally doubt we'll ever see it happen, but we'll see.

You know when the trailer shows a man humping a piñata, you're in for a treat. Rest assured, Killer Piñata is indeed a horror comedy, and is low budget enough and ridiculous enough to deserve a spot in your DVD collection. Here's a description for the film...

A possessed piñata, seeking to avenge the savagery that humanity has inflicted on his kind, picks off a group of friends, one by one, in an unending night of terror.

According to our pals at Dread Central, you can even get a poster for the film if you order the limited edition Blu-Ray or VHS. You can order the film right now here, but if you're looking for a DVD copy or to watch it On Demand, you'll have to wait until early 2017.
