More SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Easter Eggs Connect Film to IRON MAN 3 and CIVIL WAR

0
0

A couple more fun Easter eggs have been discovered in the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer that Marvel and Sony released last week. The first offers a connection to Iron Man 3. In the trailer, there’s a scene in which Tony Stark and Peter Parker are walking and talking with Happy Hogan in the background. Peter is wearing a t-shirt with a little comic that says "I lost an electron," and then the punchline, "Are you positive?"

This is the exact same shirt that Pepper Potts was wearing in Iron Man 3 when sleeping next to Tony Stark. Is it by chance that Peter is wearing the same shirt, or did Tony let him borrow it because he needed it? I have no idea, but it’s just a little thing that I thought would be fun to point out.

The next offers a connection to Civil War, and it looks like maybe there will be some scenes in Spider-Man: Homecoming that take place at the same time as the events in Civil War. There’s a point in the trailer where Tony is talking to Peter in the back of his car, the awkward scene where Peter thinks Tony is giving him a hug, when in reality he’s just reaching over to open the door for him.

If you look closely, Tony is rocking a bruised eye. This is the same bruise that Tony sustained during his fight with the Winter Solider. He’s trying to conceal the eye with a pair of sunglasses… at night. If this scene does take place during the same time as the events of Civil War or very shortly after, you have to hand it to Marvel for the attention to detail with their continuity. Check out the image below.

There’s a lot of great stuff in that trailer! If you didn't already see Howard Stark and Bruce Banner pop up in the trailer, make sure to click here! I can only imagine the insane amount of Easter eggs the full movie will contain!

Review: LA LA LAND Is a Wonderfully Charming Film Filled with Classic Hollywood Magic

0
0

I finally got a chance to see La La Land for myself recently. I’ve been hearing nothing but great things about this movie, and the hype has been building for months. I was wondering if it would actually live up to that hype, and I’m happy to say that all of those amazing reviews you’ve been seeing are accurate. La La Land exceeded my already high expectations. It’s easily one of the best films of the year, and it’s a film you can’t miss watching on the big screen!

Yeah, I know it’s not a comic book, sci-fi, fantasy, or horror film, but this is a film that any true geek with an appreciation for film will absolutely fall in love with. This film is a musical, and it’s overwhelmingly charming in every way. It's also a wonderful tribute to the musicals of old Hollywood. It’s packed full of stuff that I loved from the classic films from the golden age of Hollywood.

The film told a beautifully crafted story about boy and girl who form an unlikely relationship that takes them on a journey of self-discovery and the sacrifices that need to be made to capture their dreams. It’s full of wonderfully written music that is charismatically performed by Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and the rest of the cast. Of course, it wouldn’t be a true musical without a little dancing!

Hollywood doesn’t make movies like this anymore and the fact that it exists in a movie market full of remakes, sequels, comic book, and other popular genre films is a miracle. I just hope the movie does well at the box office so that we will see more of them! I’d love to see a resurgence of films like this that we haven’t really seen since the early 1960s.

The movie was perfectly directed by Damien Chazelle, who previously made the incredible film Whiplash. If you’ve seen Whiplash, then you know the level of talent that Chazelle is working with. He takes that talent to a whole new level with La La Land and gives us another amazing film that feels like an instant classic. This guy is extremely talented and tells powerful stories. I can’t wait to see what he plans on doing next!

One of my favorite things about this movie is how it made me feel. I just left me with a completely satisfied happy feeling that I didn’t want to go away. Like any love story, the movie has its ups and downs, but through all that, it offers complete satisfaction, and the ending is as perfect as an ending for a film can get. It completely left me in awe.

Don’t miss out on seeing this movie on the big screen! It’s such a fun and moving cinema experience worth exploring, even if you’re not into this kind of film. La La Land is one of my favorite movies of the year, and I hope you go out and see it!

James Gunn On Why He Was Afraid to Approach Marvel With Baby Groot in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

It seems like every Guardian of the Galaxy fan loves Baby Groot! It was a blast seeing him in action in the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but director James Gunn was actually really afraid to approach Marvel with the idea of using Baby Groot in the sequel. In a Facebook post, the director explains how he wasn't sure if Marvel would embrace such a big change for a popular character. He also explains that Baby Groot isn't just about selling cute Marvel merchandise to fans. Baby Groot was very important to Gunn and the story he wanted to tell in the sequel.

"To be honest, when I was first working on the script for Vol. 2 I was planning on it being years after the first movie and for little Groot to be a grown Groot. But there was something missing. First of all, I thought there was a lot of development the group needed to go through as a group - and it would be a shame for the audience to miss it. And, secondly, for whatever reason, Groot just wasn't working. It was then I came upon the idea of having Vol. 2 take place very shortly after the first film and for Groot to still be Baby Groot, with quite a lot to learn. Even though I had already long-ago-decided on the other characters involved, this change opened up the whole movie for me and it suddenly all came together. I fell in love with the script for Vol. 2, and I felt like we were creating something very special.
"When I approached Marvel Studios with my idea for Vol. 2 I was afraid of the involvement of Ego the Living Planet - a rather, uh, broad character in the 616 universe of Marvel Comics. I was afraid of the inclusion of Mantis and Ayesha, and more prominent roles for Nebula and Yondu. But I was even more afraid of approaching them with the concept that Baby Groot, and not Groot, would be a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, perhaps it seems like a hole-in-one idea now, but Groot was the most popular character in the first film, and sometimes when something works studios are more than a little reluctant to change.
"To my happy surprise, my partners at Marvel were more than supportive about the big swings in the story of Vol. 2. They seemed to instinctively know, like I did, that what matters in the Guardians franchise is to keep giving people the unexpected...
"All that said, I'm not an idiot. I knew if Baby Groot worked, the world would want Baby Groot toys and figures and plushies. But that certainly didn't seem like a certainty when I was alone in my office conceiving of a story, and it most definitely was not the driving force of the decision. I, like so many of you through the trailer alone, had fallen in love with the little dude - even though at that point he was only in my head."

There's no doubt that Baby Groot is going to be one of those scene-stealing characters fans will love. As a bonus, I included some official high-resolution photos from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that you can check out below. The movie hits theaters on May 5th, 2017!

New THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Extended TV Spot Gives You More of Zach Galifianakis' The Joker

Today, we have a new extended TV spot for The LEGO Batman Movie. It's so long it's practically a new trailer. The TV spot feels a bit disjointed, but it features a lot of Zach Galifianakis' The Joker. At a Batman fan and a LEGO Movie fan, this movie is on my must watch list... I guess I should probably bring my kid too. The LEGO Batman Movie open in theaters February 10th, 2017. Just in time for many Valentine's Day dates.

GOOSEBUMPS Author R.L. Stine Is Writing MAN-THING for Marvel Comics

goosebumps-author-rl-stein-is-writing-man-thing-for-marvel-comics

For those of you who grew up reading R.L. Stine’s classic horror series Goosebumps, you’ll be excited to hear that he’s now writing Man-Thing for Marvel Comics! Stine made the announcement himself during an interview with the New York Times

“My first ambition was to be a comic book artist. I started doing these little comic books in the fourth grade: ‘Super Stooge,’ the dumbest hero on earth. I was terrible. I had no choice but to be a writer.”

Being a writer obviously turned out to be a pretty good gig for him! Man-Thing, which made its debut in 1971, seems like the perfect fit for Stine! It’s a five issue series that will feature cover art by Tyler Crook and artwork by German Peralta and Daniel Johnson

The new comic series is inspired by the classic horror comics from the 1950s such as Tales From the Crypt, Eerie, and Creepy. Stine said:

“They were scary, really gruesome, bloody comics and they always had a twist ending. I think they’ve been a major influence in everything I’ve done since. Every Saturday morning, I’d go get a haircut so I could read the comics.”

Marvel offered Stine the opportunity write for several characters, but he wanted Man-Thing. When talking about what he plans on doing with the character, he said:

“I’m going to do a lot of action and a lot of great violence and make it creepy, but I’m going to make it funny at the same time. It’s what I try to do in my books.”

The first story that he will tell centers on Man-Thing, who heads to Burbank, Calif., “wondering why he is not starring in a major motion picture.” If you’re familiar with the history of Man-Thing, then you know that he’s a mute, but in this comic he won’t be. Stine says that “He can talk and he’s very sarcastic.”

Each issue will also include a short horror story written by Mr. Stine that is drawn by a guest artist.

I think it’s awesome that Stine is writing comics for Marvel now! It’s about time! I can’t wait to read his Man-Thing comics!

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE Gets a Cool IMAX TV Spot, 2 New Clips, and 2 Featurettes

This weekend Disney held the big premiere screening of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story \, and all I've been seeing is positive, glowing reactions. Many people are saying that it's the best Star Wars film since the Original Trilogy, and many people are saying that it's just as good as The Empire Strikes Back! That right there is some pretty incredible praise. Is the film really that good!? Well... we'll find out this week when it's released!

Over the weekend, Lucasfilm released a Rogue One IMAX TV spot, a couple of new clips that premiered on Jimmy Kimmel Live when the cast appeared on the show, and two featurettes that take us behind the scenes of the movie. There's lots of cool stuff to check out here!

All of these include never before seen footage from the film. The TV spot highlights the awesome power of the Death Star. The first clip features K-2S0 piloting a ship with the team in a dangerous environment. The second clip (3:17 mark) shows us Jyn Erso being rescued from the Empire by a team of Rebels. As for the featurettes, the first offers some insight on Alan Tudyk's K-2S0 droid and the other one focuses on one of the key planets in Rogue One.

Rogue One hits theaters this week on December 16th!

Watch Hayao Miyazaki Discuss How AI CG Animation Is "An Insult To Life Itself"

0
0

Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary director who brought us animated films such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, was recently shown a presentation for AI CG animation technology, and he wasn't impressed at all. In fact, he was completely offended by it!

The experimental animation AI program basically learns how to animate after it observes a human model. Their goal is to build a machine that can draw just like humans do. The presentation was conducted by the CGI team from the Dwango Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, which included Dwango’s president Nobuo Kawakami, who is a trainee producer at Studio Ghibli and board director from Studio Khara.

After Miyazaki was shown the presentation, he didn't hold back his feelings and said that he felt "utterly disgusted" by it and it was "an insult to life itself." He went on to say that he would never incorporate this kind of technology into his work.

You can see the team there just uncomfortably sweating bullets as Miyazaki tears their technology to pieces. After Miyazaki is done with his rant, Kawakami confusedly looks around stunned and says, "This is just our experiment." I mean, what can you really say after a legendary artist and animation master tell you how offended he is by what he just saw?

All I can say is that I'm glad it wasn't me! You can feel the crazy uncomfortable tension in the room when watching the video below.

Neil Patrick Harris Warns A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS Gets "Shockingly Dark"

Neil Patrick Harris is warning you that the Netflix adaptation of A Series Of Unfortunate Events gets "shockingly dark." This should come as no surprise to anyone who's read the popular series, but it sounds like the series will have a much darker tone than the film made by Nickelodeon. Collider spoke to Harris who said the direction was taken by Netflix to ensure the series still had an appeal to adults...

"I think it’s super faithful to the books. I think at times it’s shockingly dark. From what I gathered, Netflix was concerned that adults weren’t going to be able to value it because it was skewing towards a younger demographic. And I think now that it’s done, they want to make sure the kids still value it and it’s not gone too Stranger Things. I really wanted Olaf to be bad. To be a bad person."

Considering my sister (who is 25) read the books in grade school, I think they'll do a solid job in pulling in at least the millennial audience for the series.

While the film tried to shove all 13 novels into one 90 minute film, the Netflix series will take two episodes to handle a single book. Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, aka the author of the series, was confirmed by Harris to have had a heavy presence in the writing process, so it should be very similar to the novels. The series will make its Netflix debut January 13th!

GREEN LANTERN And SPACE GHOST Will Team Up in Upcoming Comic Book Mashup

0

The Green Lantern will team up with Space Ghost in an upcoming crossover event between DC and Hanna-Barbera. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm wagering this team up will feature the more serious, actual hero Space Ghost, and not the Adult Swim talk show host we all know and love...

io9 says that's not the only crazy team up you can expect either! The Suicide Squad will make friends with The Banana Splits (man, that's a flashback) and Booster Gold will travel to the Stone-Age and hang with Fred Flintstone!

Each comic will also have a sub-story featuring either Top Cat, The Jetsons, Snagglepuss, or Ruff and Ready. Sounds like something you want to check out, right? I'll make sure to remind you when the comics start to roll out on March 29th.

I'll also save you the trouble of looking up The Banana Splits theme song and just leave it right here...

WESTWORLD Theme Song Gets a Heavy Metal Cover

331Erock, aka Eric Calderone, is well-known for giving recognizable music the heavy metal treatment. We've featured some of his work on the site before, and a little while back, he put a new spin on composer Ramin Djawadi's theme song for HBO's Westworld. Since the show wrapped up last week and we didn't have a new episode to watch last night, maybe checking this out will help ail those withdrawals you're going through.

THE FLASH Star Grant Gustin Admits That Barry Is Past-Due for a New Suit

0

The Flash is The CW's top show, and his costume has only ever seen one revision and that was only the emblem on his chest. Recently star Grant Gustin admitted on twitter "I feel like Barry is passed [sic] due for a new suit." So is this a hint of things to come?

Many fans in the past complained about the suit's blood red color versus something more scarlet like in the comics. I think a more vibrant red would look really weird in reality and be a pain in the ass to light.

The folks at Comicbook think it's because the suit smells:

When a fan responded by asking him if the old one "smells that bad," Gustin responded with a simple "yes."
That's not a new complaint: superhero actors in general have often said that the worst part of the costumes isn't how they fit, how you move in them, or seeing yourself relatively exposed on camera, but the fact that they tend to absorb moisture and odor.

I'm sure the Flash's wardrobe department builds new suits on the same design due to stunt work and odor, so hopefully Gustin was just joking (otherwise eww). I'm surprised we haven't seen the suit change each season similarly to what we've seen on Arrow. As long as they steer clear of the funky Justice League costume I'll be happy.

War-Torn Poster Released for Christopher Nolan's Next Film DUNKIRK

war-torn-poster-released-for-christopher-nolans-next-film-dunkirk1

The first poster has been released for Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated World War II film, Dunkirk. The poster features a soldier standing and looking at a war-torn beach. It looks like an absolutely terrifying scene.

The film was inspired by Operation Dynamo, which was a 1940 mission that freed over 300,000 Allied troops who were trapped by the Nazis in the French city of Dunkirk.

The film has been described as an "epic action thriller," and a heart-pounding teaser trailer was released a few months ago. The film has an incredible cast that includes Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, James D'Arcy, and Harry Styles

Warner Bros. plans on screening seven minutes of the film in front of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with select screenings of 70mm IMAX screenings. I imagine a full trailer for the film will be released at the same time. I loved what I saw in the teaser, and I can't wait to see more footage from the film, which is sure to be another epic film from the acclaimed director.

Dunkirk hits theaters on July 21, 2017. I also included a teaser poster below that is done in the style of a propaganda poster.

Jim Carrey Was Originally Wanted for Buddy in ELF

0
0

As perfect as he is for the role, Will Ferrell was not the first choice to play Buddy in the now iconic Elf. Jim Carrey (via IMDB) was the original choice for the film, but passed on the project. Mind you, this was wayyyy back in 1993 when the screenplay for the film first appeared. This would be one year before Carrey really emerged in Hollywood, and the following year Carrey would film Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb And Dumber. Young Jim Carrey is not the Jim Carrey I would expect to see in a children's film!

Then again, Ferrell took the role of Elf almost immediately after filming Old School, so maybe it wouldn't have hurt his career after all.

Of course, Carrey would get a Christmas film of his own years later when he played The Grinch in Ron Howard's film adaptation of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, so it's not like he lacks the holiday spirit. Carrey has never commented on declining the role, and I'm sure he doesn't even remember the offer, considering it was over 20 years ago. I did manage to dig up some weird tweet about elves on his Twitter though from 2009...

I think Elf would've been radically different with Jim Carrey in the lead. Don't you?

Here Are All the Season 2 Trailers for THE EXPANSE We All Slept On!

0

I haven't watched Syfy since the season finale of The Expanse, so you'll have to forgive me for sleeping on the news that the second season is coming February 1st! For those that haven't watched the show, the series is a great sci-fi drama that focuses on tensions between the humans of Earth, Mars, and the asteroid belt that houses the working class. There are other things at work as well, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen.

I absolutely loved the first season, and while it can be disorienting for you to get thrown into their universe so quickly, you'll soon appreciate the surprisingly deep lore behind a show that became a sleeper hit of 2016! The visual effects are remarkably strong for a Syfy series.

As I mentioned in the title, there have been three trailers for the second season, which looks like it will answer all questions fans had regarding the first season finale and give us a much greater look at the human colonies of Mars! Check out the trailers below.

The Gunslinger Comes Face to Face With the Man in Black in New DARK TOWER Photo

the-gunslinger-comes-face-to-face-with-the-man-in-black-in-new-dark-tower-photo2

We haven't heard or seen anything about the feature film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower since the release of the film was delayed from February 17, 2017 to July 28, 2017. Director Nikolaj Arcel and his post-production team just needed a little more time to properly finish the film.

Now we have this new photo featuring Idris Elba as Deschain, a.k.a. The Gunslinger, angrily staring down Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flagg, a.k.a. The Man in Black. It's a nice little image that gives us a little taste of the intensity between these two characters who have a long history with each other.

An early trailer for the film leaked online a few months ago. We didn't post it on the site but I watched it and I absolutely loved what I saw! This looks like it's going to be a fantastic film! There's no word on when we will see an official first trailer, but I know fans of the novels that the film is based on are looking forward to it.

The Dark Tower series spans eight novels along with a few assorted short stories and comic books. The movie is not a direct adaptation of these books, it actually serves as a companion piece to the books that follows Roland Deschain, "Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum. It is the heart of all worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it."

The film also stars Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers; Abbey Lee as Tirana; and Fran Kranz as Pimli, plus Jackie Earle HaleyKatheryn Winnick, and Claudia Kiim. There has been a ton of news surrounding the development of this long-awaited film. If you want to catch up on any of that, click here.

Hugh Jackman Took a Pay Cut to Make Sure LOGAN Got an R Rating

0
0

Wolverine fans were extremely happy to hear that director James Mangold's Logan was going to get an R-rating. Fans have been wanting to see a true hardcore Wolverine movie for years, and it's finally going to happen with Hugh Jackman's final film as the character.

As you know, studios are afraid to make R-rated superhero movies because it limits their audience. A PG-13 rating opens it up to so many more people, but then Deadpool exploded at the box office and the studio saw the light. They saw that fans want comic book movies that actually represent the characters they love.

In order to secure the R-rating, the budget of the film had to be lowered, and according to AICN's Eric Vespe, the director said that Jackman took a pay cut on the film to secure that R-rating. There's no word on how much he lowered his pay, but it was enough to make the studio comfortable with moving forward with an R-rated film.

40 minutes of Logan was screened at Butt-Numb-A-Thon, which is a 24-hour film festival that's held in Austin, TX. It was met with very positive reactions. This is the event where Mangold dropped the news on Jackman's pay. I know Jackman is insanely rich, and he really doesn't need the money, but it's still cool that he did this for the integrity of the film project.

Rumored Title of STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

0
0

Lucasfilm and Disney have yet to officially announce the title of Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII, but a rumored title has surfaced from the AVS Forum. They came across an intriguing trademark filing that may have revealed the title.

The title in question is Star Wars: Forces of Destiny. It was recently submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office, and the filing covers a ton of different items including toys, games, clothing, and more. If you want to read everything that it covers you can.

It's obvious that something very big is happening with this title, and there's a good chance that it could be for Episode VIII. The title seems to fit in line with where the new saga trilogy started with The Force AwakensForces of Destiny seems to move that concept forward.

Again, this is just a rumor because Lucasfilm hasn't officially announced anything yet. When they do decide to announce the title, it could end up being something completely different.

Star Wars: Episode VIII stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran. It's set to be released on December 15th, 2017.
