The first trailer has been released for Martin Scorsese's new film Silence, and it looks like he's created another masterpiece. The film is very different from anything he's done before. Scorsese has been trying to make this film for the past 28 years. Now he's finally done it, and it looks like it was well worth the wait. 

The story is set in the 17th century, and it centers on two Christian missionaries, played by Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver, who embark on a mission to Japan in search of their missing mentor, played by Liam Neeson. This journey is described as their ultimate test of faith as they enter a land where Christianity is outlawed. It looks like this is something that they will be struggling with. Of course, the movie is sure to go beyond that basic premise. 

This looks like a deep and powerful film that will go into questions of religious tolerance and explore the dangers of ministering the faith to the Japanese people during that time. There's going to be plenty of stuff to chew on with this film. 

Silence opens in theaters on December 23rd. 

Here are a couple of fun pieces of variant cover art for DC Comic's Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad #1. They feature Harley Quinn and Wonder Woman fighting each other. The art you see here was created by Stanley Lau and Gabriele Dell'otto. I don't know why, but I don't think I've ever really thought about seeing these two characters fight each other before. As much as I love Harley, there's no doubt that Wonder Woman could kick her ass all across the DC universe. Here's the description of the upcoming comic series:

The first major event storyline of DC’s Rebirth era begins with a day Amanda Waller always knew would come: the Justice League discovers the existence of the Suicide Squad! This government-sponsored black-ops team of super-villains with bombs implanted in their brains is obviously a deal-breaker for Earth’s paragons of truth and justice! But you can bet that the Wall and her Task Force X won’t go down without the fight to end all fights as this weekly series gets underway! 

Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad #1 is set to be released on December 21st.

I've got an interesting trailer here for a new movie called The Book of Love. It's a quirky dramedy that stars Jason Sudeikis as a guy who, through a series of events, helps a young girl played by Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams to build a raft. Of course, this is all encouraged by Sudeikis' wife in the story, played by Jessica Biel. You'd think with this kind of talent, there might be a good film here to watch, but it doesn't look or sound like that's the case. It looks like a pretty cheesy movie. Here's the synopsis:

After the accidental death of his free-spirited pregnant wife, Penny (a luminous Jessica Biel), reserved architect Henry (Jason Sudeikis) struggles to find meaning in his life and in the work that once consumed him. As he continues to work on the house he and Penny were building together, Henry is drawn to a mysterious young runaway named Millie (Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams) whom Penny had often talked about helping. Though Millie mistrusts Henry at first, the two build a tentative friendship as she reveals her ambition to build a raft to sail away from her dark past and start anew. Taking on the father role he was meant to have, Henry neglects his job and other responsibilities to help Millie on her quest. As they work together, he comes to understand that she can help him to heal as much as he can help her. The movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival under the title The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea. 

Apparently it was met by negative reviews and the title was changed to The Book of Love, maybe to distance itself from those reviews. It also stars Paul Reiser and is set to hit theaters on January 13, 2017.

If you're a fan of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, I've got a must-watch video essay on the film that focuses on the script. It's called "Quietly Going Insane Together," and it was created by Ryan McDuffie of Lessons from the Screenplay. The video is packed full of all kinds of fascinating insight into Kubrick's method of madness and what made this psychological horror film so damn terrifying and awesome. If you are interested in the moviemaking process or screenwriting, this is definitely something you've got to watch.

Last week, three clips were released for the upcoming Cartoon Network animated series Justice League Action. The series is launching next month and it will start off with a four-part special called “Shazam Slam.” In it, Batman becomes possessed and is turned into a giant flying Batmonster! The series also features the voice of Sean Astin as Shazam.

Below, you'll find the full synopsis for the event series along with a new clip featuring Superman and Wonder Woman battling the villainous Parasite.

In “Shazam Slam,” the villainous Black Adam battles Batman on the Rock of Eternity and unleashes a horde of Djinn determined to turn the Earth back to its pre-human, volcanic state. Affected by the otherworldly powers of these primordial monsters, Batman becomes possessed and is turned into a giant flying Batmonster laying waste to the Hall of Justice, with only Superman capable of taking the fight to the Dark Knight. One by one, the Justice League - with the help of Shazam (voiced by Sean Astin) and The Wizard (voiced by Carl Reiner) - must hunt down and defeat each Djinn in order to yet again save the world from destruction.

I'm not really sure what to think about this series yet. It looks like something the kids will enjoy, but I'm not really that excited about it. It looks like a really cheaply made series. "Shazmam Slam" will premiere on December 16th on Cartoon Network. That will be followed by new episodes of the series that will air on Saturday mornings beginning December 24th. Last summer it was announced that Netflix ordered a remake of the classic 1965 sci-fi series Lost in Space. The new series was described as an “epic but grounded science fiction saga focusing on a young explorer family from earth lost in an alien universe and the challenges they face in staying together against seemingly insurmountable odds."

Deadline is now reporting that Parker Posey (Dazed and Confused, Best in Show, Portlandia, Mascots) has signed on to co-star in the series. She is set to play Dr. Smith in the series, who was previously played by Jonathan Harris in the original series. Then Gary Oldman played the character in the 1998 feature film. They are obviously switching things up with the character.

The story will revolve around the Robinson family, "which is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, the Robinsons find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and their own personal demons."

Parker joins the previously cast Molly Parker (House of Cards) as Maureen Robinson; Toby Stephens (Black Sails) as her husband, astrophysicist/expedition commander John Robinson; Maxwell Jenkins (Sense8) as her son, Will Robinson; and Taylor Russell (Falling Skies) as her daughter, Judy Robinson.

The first season will consist of ten episodes and is set to air in 2018.

They say working out is as much a mental strain as it is physical. In that way, it's very similar to The Force from Star Wars. While I'm not too masterful at either skill, perhaps you're some badass geek woman looking to rep your style while you're getting swole. If that sounds like you, I can't recommend this Star Wars collection from Under Armour enough. If I were a girl who liked working out I would totally buy this. Right now I'm the complete opposite so I'm gonna pass, but I thank Fashionably Geek for the heads up all the same.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh is set to star in CBS's upcoming Star Trek: Discovery series. This is the first casting that we've heard about for the show. There's no confirmation of who she will be playing, but chances are she is taking on the lead role of the Lieutenant Commander.

The news comes from Nicholas Meyer, the director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. He is serving as a consulting producer on Star Trek: Discovery, and during an interview with Comingsoon he said, “I know Michelle Yeoh is in it.”

The new series is said to take place before the original Star Trek series, and it will feature a female protagonist who isn't a Captain and include an openly gay character. Executive Producer Bryan Fuller also previously revealed that the main female character will be referred to as “Number One.” This is the character that Yeoh might be playing. That has yet to be confirmed, though. For more information on the series, click here. 

Yeoh is a great actress who will give some weight to this new Star Trek series. It'll be interesting to see what other actors they end up bringing on board to fill out the cast. The series is set to premiere in May 2017 on CBS, after that all the episodes of Star Trek: Discovery will be available in the U.S. exclusively on CBS All Access. 

Over the past week, a few new images have surfaced from Hugh Jackman's final Wolverine film, Logan. One of the latest photos gives us a close-up look at Logan's worn, battle-scarred hands. As you know, Logan's healing powers have slowed down in his old age, and you can see the scars left behind from popping his claws over the years.

Above, I also included a new photo from Empire featuring Logan holding Laura/X-23, then below you'll find the image of Logan's hands, a close-up of Reaver leader Donald Pierce's (Boyd Holbrook) robotic arm, as well as another image of a shot-up car. 

When talking about the film, director James Mangold said, “The goal was to make something human. We made an effort to scale back on the gloss and greenscreen.” He went on to say, “If you’re on the make for a hyper choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying CG fuckathon, this ain’t your movie.”

Jackman talked about the heart of story, saying, "It's essential you see this as the story of a man who is struggling with mortality and legacy, and whether the world has been better off with him or without him."

Logan takes place in the year 2024...Old Man Logan is in full effect. Logan looks bad, and drinks a lot. For work, he drives a 2024 Chrysler 300 limo that looks modified in the front to look more futuristic. He’s sick, his powers are fading, and he heals much more slowly — and sometimes not at all.

In 2024, mutant births are severely in decline, and people aren’t sure why. We find out about a government-type operation called “Transigen” that is turning mutant children into killing machines. Logan ends up mentoring the girl, who has two claws instead of his three.

Logan is the final film that Jackman will star in as Wolverine, and it will most likely be the last time we see Patrick Stewart in the role of Xavier as well. The movie will be released in theaters on March 3, 2017. For more information on the film, click here.

This illustration is packed to the brim with all kinds of awesome sci-fi and fantasy references, and I'm sure anyone could kill a good amount of time looking at this thing trying to find them all. I love it when the actors and actresses from popular superhero movie franchises dress up as their characters to go visit young fans at hospitals like this. Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland recently got all decked out in his Spider-Man costume and visited NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

A video posted by Holland's co-star Zendaya shows Holland meeting a young kid who tells Holland he prefers Batman over Spider-Man. It's pretty funny, and the actor has a fun meeting with the kid. It's so cool that he took the time out of his schedule to do this for a fan, even though he likes Batman better.

I know Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a Christmas classic. I've been watching the damn thing every year since I was a kid, and the older I got the crazier I realized it was. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer has got some majorly amusing issues, and this latest Honest Trailer from Screen Junkies points them all out to you in the form of the movie's classic theme song in which they describe the story as being about a "prepubescent reindeer" and "Santa's elf slave" and their "group of freaks." The Honest Trailer also points out that it's "Lord of the Rings for kids on acid" and that the moral of the story Is that being different is bad, unless your defect is useful. Check out the video. 

An intense new clip called "Lock Down" has been released for the upcoming sci-fi film Passengers. It shows us a scene in which Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are looking for something that's wrong with their ship, and they find it when they get sucked into an airlock. 

So far everything that we've seen from this movie looks like it would be one of the worst situations ever to be stuck in. It's a nightmare scenario that sure makes for a great movie plot!

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are two passengers onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As Jim and Aurora try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction... only to be threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they woke up.

The movie is set to be released on December 21st, and I'm pretty stoked about this flick!

Passengers looks like a box office slam dunk with the pairing of Hollywood's two hottest and in demand actors Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. The newest clip and trailer punch up the action beats with lots of visual effects and double down the the mystery of why they woke up 90 years too early on their interstellar trip. We also have new photo and poster. Passengers is coming out in less than a month on December 21st (USA).

I know a majority of our readership could give a shit less about purses (cuz you're like 80% dudes), but can we at least take a minute to appreciate what Marvel has done here? It is NOT easy to make a fashionable geek accessory without making it look childish, and they killed it with this purse designed in the style of Captain Marvel! The first Trainspotting was a tour de force from director Danny Boyle and helped bring Ewan McGregor and himself to prominence with US audiences. T2: Trainspotting is the first film in 19 years that Boyle and McGregor are working on together after having a falling out over the production of The Beach in 2000. Hopefully this means they will work together again in the future. TriStar Pictures released a bunch of new high-res photos that feature McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, and Ewen Bremner.

T2: Trainspotting will open on January 27th (U.K.), limited open March 3rd (USA), and wide release March 10th (USA).

I have been a Studio Ghibli nut all my life, but did not know exactly where the phenomenal films came from until I was in college. Most people who love the films have similar experiences and have seen the films, but don’t necessarily connect them to the studio that produces them, nor to the fact that Ghibli has produced numerous films! I would say this is our first type of Ghibli nerd: the unknowing “Ghiblet” who needs a little guidance to get access to the knowledge that, yes, there are other films like Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Service.  I cannot count on my fingers the amount of times I have asked people, “Do you like Studio Ghibli?” and they respond, “What is that?” Then, I proceed to ask them if they have seen a Ghibli film, Spirited Away, for example and they answer something along the lines of, “Oh my gosh! I love that movie!” Oh, those lovely unknowing Ghiblets…

Next, we have the Ghibli for life people who are balls deep into the whole Ghibli thing. There is a wide range of these guys (i.e. from the fanatics to the film appreciators), and they express a few character traits that we’ll talk about below. The unknowing Ghiblets (UGs) have the potential to become one of these, and I don’t see why the UGs would not want to go all in on this stuff because it is amazing. Disclaimer: I am clearly not biased, so trust me on this one. ;)

So, here is what that true Ghibli nerd is like:

1.) They have all the merch:

Well, maybe not all of it, but they certainly want to!  I mean, who wouldn’t want a Totoro bed, some awesome Ghibli paintings to put up on your wall, Ghibli coin purses, costumes — you name it! Basically, you can get anything Ghibli if you set your mind to it. Admittedly, I myself rock the My Neighbor Totoro wallet and several pieces of Ghibli wall art. And let me tell you, folks, it just makes my day a little better every time I look at sweet, sweet Tororo’s face. If you want to see more of this awesome Ghibli stuff of which I speak, go ahead and check out my Ghibli board on Pinterest here!

2.) They have seen most, if not all, of the movies:

You’ve likely heard someone refer to a Studio Ghibli film at one time or another, as the films from this studio are pretty popular, to say the least. Perhaps you know of the studio after having seen some of the films, perhaps not; either way, you have likely experienced a Ghibli film at one time or another in your childhood. And, hey, what childhood is truly complete without the magic of Ghibli? Disney geeks might try to contest this, but there is really no case against it because Ghibli films in America are distributed through Disney! Distributed, yes, but created by Disney? Definitely not. The films under the Studio Ghibli umbrella are typically headed up by Hayao Miyazaki, his mentors, and mentees. If you’re already a Ghibli nut, you’re probably aware of this by now, but if you are just getting into Ghibli films, I strongly recommend finding out more about the creators of these films because they are some of the most talented artists you will ever hear of!

So, to be honest, experiencing these movies is the best facet of being a Ghibli nerd because you have practically flawless movies to watch again and again and again. There are many films that have been released in the US that almost everyone knows about, such as My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and a couple others. If you have ever seen a single one of these movies, you might know that they are far above the quality necessitated to call something a “classic.” Growing up on Ghibli productions has helped so many children enhance their youthful imagination and make the best of childhood. What I know of Miyazaki confirms this, as this was largely Ghibli’s mission in creating most of the their films out there — they are simply works of art and stimulate the imagination of adults and children alike. Now, if so many people in the States have seen these, what differentiates the people who admire the films from a distance from the true Ghiblet?

Well, although these movies are well-known in the states, there are also some lesser-known Ghibli films that have been translated into English as well. Most diehard Ghiblets know about these and agree that they are essentials to the Ghibli repertoire. Some of these include: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, From up on Poppy Hill, When Marnie was There, The Wind Rises, Princess Mononoke, and many others. It is unfortunate that these films are lesser-known in the States, as they are masterpieces in the world of cartoon-making. Ghiblets, however, know this and want more people to experience these films. In fact, before I became a true Ghiblet, a friend of mine who already was one convinced me to watch a bunch of the Ghibli films I had never even heard of. They even bought me a few of the films, just to ensure that I was able to experience them! Now, friends, that is a real Ghibli fan. And thank goodness for those because, without them, UGs like I was would not have the opportunity to see some of the world’s finest artwork.

3.) They Tend to Admire Hayao Miyazaki

But really, who wouldn’t?! This guy has created countless classics that define people’s childhoods. On top of that, he is generally a cool guy who knows how to be an adult, but live and enjoy life like a child. His art definitely reflects that too.

4.) They all want to go to the Ghibli Museum in Japan

Okay, Ghibli nerd or not, who wouldn’t want to do this? This place has the cutest attractions you could dream of, from a giant catbus to the robot soldiers from Laputa Castle in the Sky. They also show a special animated short that you can’t find elsewhere. Pretty cool, if you ask me. 

Well, those are the basics of what it means to be a Ghibli nerd, my friends!  Definitely not an exhaustive list, but an honest effort! If you’re into this stuff already, I advise you to keep going. If not, you are missing out and will find that getting more into Ghibli awesomeness will enrich your life totally!
