Crazy Short Film LOST BOY Is a Futurist Robot Story We Need to See More of

$

Seven minutes flew by as I was ushered into the desolate future world of "Lost Boy." I knew this was a short film going in...but usually when they end I'm comfortable with the time we spent together! That's not the case this time, as I think this concept is a glimpse into an exciting new franchise for science fiction as a genre. Read the official description and continue reading below...

Year unknown. Population Zero. Welcome to LOST BOY.

Following in the footsteps of SUNDAYS, their debut concept short success which turned heads worldwide last year, comes LOST BOY, the hugely awaited punk sci-fi feature project which is next in-line from visionary outfit PostPanic Pictures.

Directed by Ash Thorp and Anthony Scott Burns, this LOST BOY concept short lays down the gauntlet once again by showcasing the creative ambitions of Hollywood’s next generation of storytellers.

LOST BOY is an ambitious sci-fi concept heavily influenced by the American action classics and Japanese samurai films. LOST BOY represents the second feature in a series of director-driven film projects from the Amsterdam-based production company, PostPanic Pictures.

I really like the mixture of using modern CGI to essentially polish classic '80s sci-fi effects. We've seen that done with a couple films in the past like Turbo Kid and Kung Fury...but never in a serious regard like this. Hopefully, we will see more of it as time goes on, and more of Lost Boy! I'm a fan, and I'll take a sequel any time they're ready!

THE RULES DON'T APPLY Will Be the Non-Geek Movie Option for Visiting Relatives Over Thanksgiving

$

Thanksgiving weekend is one of the largest movie days during the year due to traveling families who are looking for an escape from relatives they haven't seen in a while. While I would wager a lot of you guys will be traveling to see Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, there is an option on the freak chance your relatives don't want any part of that awesome.

The Rules Don't Apply was likely chosen to be released over Thanksgiving break specifically for that reason! Read the official description and continue on below...

An aspiring young actress (Lily Collins) and her ambitious young driver (Alden Ehrenreich) struggle hopefully with the absurd eccentricities of the wildly unpredictable billionaire Howard Hughes (Warren Beatty) for whom they work. It’s Hollywood, 1958. Small town beauty queen, songwriter, and devout Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey (Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), who is engaged to be married to his 7th grade sweetheart and is a deeply religious Methodist.

Their instant attraction not only puts their religious convictions to the test, but also defies Hughes’ #1 rule: no employee is allowed to have any relationship whatsoever with a contract actress. Hughes’ behavior intersects with Marla and Frank in very separate and unexpected ways, and as they are drawn deeper into his bizarre world, their values are challenged and their lives are changed.

Sounds like a film for older people who would turn up their nose to some Harry Potter, right? On the off chance you do find yourself going to this film, don't worry, it still looks pretty good. Is it something I personally would pay to see in a theater...hell no! If someone else is paying though, why not?

The Rules Don't Apply opens November 23rd.

Trailer for Darren Bousman's New Haunted House Horror Thriller ABATTOIR

"The guy's a ghost collecting ghosts."

Horror movie director Darren Bousman has a new haunted house thriller coming out called Abattoir. I'm a sucker for horror flicks, and this looks like it could be really fun. It's got an interesting concept, and I want to see how the story plays out. As you'll see in the trailer, it's managed to get some solidly good reviews from horror fan sites.

Real estate reporter Julia Talben’s (Jessica Lowndes) life is turned upside down when her family is brutally murdered. Julia quickly realizes there is more to this story when she returns to the crime scene to find the murder room deconstructed and physically removed from her sister’s home. This ignites an investigation that leads her and ex-lover Detective Declan Grady (Joe Anderson) to the town of New English, where they meet town spinster Allie (Lin Shaye) along with the enigmatic Jebediah Crone (Dayton Callie) and the Abattoir—a monstrous house stitched together with unending rooms of death. Julia comes to realize her sister’s soul is trapped inside, but the Abattoir isn’t just a house—it’s a door to something more evil than anyone could have ever imagined. Julia and Grady are ultimately faced with the question: How do you build a haunted house?

I've enjoyed a few of Bousman's films, but this looks like it could be one of his better ones. Some of the other films that he's directed include Saw II, III, IV, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Mother's Day, 11-11-11, and The Devil's Carnival

Abattoir is set to be released on December 9th.

M. Night Shyamalan Says New TALES FROM THE CRYPT Will Adapt Stories From the Comics

Not all of M. Night Shyamalan's episodes of Tales From The Crypt will lift from the popular comics, but he's definitely considering a couple. The director spoke with Crave Online and spoke about his favorite comics from the series and which ones he'd like to adapt to his long-awaited TNT series:

"There’s a bunch. I have a folder of my favorites, like my twenty or thirty favorites. I’m trying to remember them. I mean they’re so weird. There’s one where there’s a bewitching one, where an old lady bewitches and takes the wife, and the husband has to figure it out. He keeps the old lady in the closet but that’s really his wife now. They’ve swapped, you know? And he can’t kill this woman but she’s now a beautiful woman."

The more I hear about this series and TNT's new "horror" block planned for 2017, the more excited I get! We've talked about it for so long I'm starting to worry we're going to hear that the project is dead when 2017 actually gets here. Please don't let that happen, I need my cheesy horror fix again. I'm just hoping it can live up to the glory of the HBO series!

Here's What Kevin From THE OFFICE Actually Sounds Like

Most of the stars from the hit series The Office used their normal voice. I know this because I've seen many of them in other films or television shows! Brian Baumgertner, aka Kevin, hasn't had any roles I've seen since the show ended, so I always assumed the way he spoke on the show was his actual voice! I now feel like an idiot after seeing this video thanks to a popular post on Reddit...

Now I feel like all along I should have thought, "Of course he doesn't ACTUALLY sound like that!" I'm actually a little disappointed now that it isn't his real voice. Not as disappointed as the time Kevin dropped his chili though...

Cut Alternate Ending From FANTASTIC BEASTS Hints at Where the Sequel Is Headed

cut-alternate-ending-from-fantastic-beasts-hints-at-where-the-sequel-is-headed4

Obviously, if you haven't Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them yet you probably shouldn't read this article as it contains major spoilers regarding the end of the film.

Director David Heyman recently revealed that there was an alternate ending for the film that was cut out because they didn't want the audience to know where the sequel was headed. The funny thing is, the director decided to reveal what that cut scene was anyway, so we now know where the sequel is headed.

During the climax of the film, we learn that Credence Barebone, who is played by Ezra Miller, is the source of the Obscurus, which is a dark creature that has been causing all kinds of destruction and death in New York City.

Eventually, everyone learns this and they have to track him down to try and stop him. He is seen as such a threat that the American Aurors come together and kill him, even though Newt was trying to save him.

As it turns out, they didn't really kill him because Credence was in the Obscurus form when the Aurors blasted him away with their wands. The scene that was cut would have confirmed that Credence was still alive and this is what Heyman had to say about it in an interview with Cinema Blend:

"We actually had a scene, which we cut, which was Credence going to a boat, to get on a boat somewhere else. But we cut that, because we didn’t want to have it be such an, ‘Ahhh, here we go.’"

When asked what the scene was like he said:

"Him getting on a boat, maybe a boat with Newt, maybe not, and heading off out of New York."

So it looks like Credence will live on in the upcoming sequel. I'm actually kind of glad that this is the case because Credence is an interesting character who I would have liked to learn more about, and now we'll get some more character development for him!

So even though they didn't want to have an "Ahhh, here we go" moment, Heyman decided to tell everyone about it anyway.

FANTASTIC BEASTS Sequel Titles Will Continue HARRY POTTER Title Format

If you've been wondering what the title of a Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel could look like, wonder no more. During an Apple Store event in Soho, Eddie Redmayne helped clear things up.

Via Snitchseeker:

I’m wondering how the titles will work. Do you have any insight?
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2?
Ezra Miller: Other Places to Find Fantastic Beasts?
Dan Fogler: Fantastic Beasts and Whoops We Forgot One?
Miller: Where to Find Them Again?
Do you know at all how they’re going to be structured and titled?
Redmayne: You know, I did actually ask that question to David Yates and David Heyman yesterday. And the answer is: “Fantastic Beasts” will remain in the title if we go forward, and then it’ll be “and the …”.

So no number sequels. This falls right in line with the title format of the Harry Potter books. What is going to be interesting is to see how they shoehorn these titles. Just for fun let's take a crack at some titles.

Fantastic Beasts and the Elder Wand
Fantastic Beasts and the Dark Wizard
Fantastic Beasts and the Golden Poop Scooper

Fantastic Breasts and Where to Find Them is now open in theaters everywhere.

Side note: GeekTyrant editor Mily keeps wanting to change Fantastic Beasts to Fantastic Breasts. I've personally wanted to change them to Fantastic Beats. Maybe we should let her do it and see if anyone notices.

AMC Theaters Considers Charging More Money for Popular Tentpole Films

$

0

AMC used to be my movie theater of choice, but I stopped paying to see movies there a couple of years ago because it's just too damn expensive for tickets and concessions. On top of that, the moviegoing experience isn't really that great, and you don't even get reserved seating! These days it's cheaper for me to go to Arclight Cinemas, and they offer a much better moviegoing experience.

Now the movie theater chain is considering charging audiences even more money for popular tentpole films. The CFO of AMC Entertainment, Craig Ramsey, recently made some interesting comments picked up by THR during the MKM Partners Entertainment Leisure and Consumer Technology Conference. This is where he says they are looking at the prospects of variable prices:

They [Odeon & UCI] are further advanced in variable pricing, where tentpole movies are priced up on release. That’s something we’ve talked about in the U.S. We expect to learn a lot with what they’ve done. We think it will position us to start having those conversations about pricing opportunities in the U.S.

As a consumer, that just sounds like a stupid idea. I know AMC isn't a theater I really go see movies at these days, but this will make me never want to go see a movie at AMC theaters again. I'm not going to pay any more extra money to see a big tentpole film from Marvel, Disney, or DC. Hell no! It's already too expensive! Hopefully, the other movie theater chains don't follow in AMC's footsteps. It might benefit the other theaters more if they don't.

Back in 2013 Steven Spielberg and George Lucas predicted that this could happen. Spielberg said, “You’re gonna have to pay $25 for the next Iron Man, you’re probably only going to have to pay $7 to see Lincoln.” Lucas went on to predict:

"Going to the movies will cost 50 bucks or 100 or 150 bucks, like what Broadway costs today, or a football game. It’ll be an expensive thing. … (The movies) will sit in the theaters for a year, like a Broadway show does. That will be called the ‘movie’ business."

You can watch a video of them talking about it below. I hope this isn't the future of movies! But if AMC is actually going to take steps like this and implement these changes, it looks like maybe that's where the entertainment business is headed. What do you think? Would you pay the extra cash to see these big tentpole films?

Disney's Live-Action WINNIE THE POOH Movie Gets a Director and the Plot Sounds Like HOOK

$
0
0

Marc Forster, the director behind films such as Finding Neverland, Quantum of Solace, and World War Z, is set to direct Disney's live action Winnie the Pooh-inspired film, Christopher Robin. The story centers around an adult version of Christopher, the human boy from the classic A.A. Milne Winnie the Pooh series.

As you know, those books and the animated series tell the stories of Christopher's adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with his animal friends that include Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Roo, Eeyoer, Rabbit, and Kanga. Well, THR offers up a plot summary of the film, and it sure does sound a lot like Steven Spielberg's Hook. Check it out:

Robin has grown out of the joyful imagination he had as a young boy and is now a businessman who prioritizes work over his wife and daughter. With his home life on the brink, the last thing his life needs is the return of Pooh, who needs his help in finding his friends again. Robin has to find a way to help both sides or risk losing everything he holds dear.

The project is also described as having "strong elements of magical realism as it seeks to tell an emotional journey that is combined with a heartwarming adventure."

There seems to be some solid talent behind the development of the project, so there's a good chance it'll turn out to be another great Disney movie. Even though the basic plot of the film is similar to Hook, it will obviously have its own unique twist and style.

The film is being produced by Brigham Taylor, who has worked on films such as The Jungle Book, Tron: Legacy, and Tomorrowland. He's also helping develop The Sword in the Stone and The Rocketeers. The studio has hired Alex Ross Perry to write it.

Review: THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN Couldn't Decide What Kind of Film It Wanted to Be

$
0
0

Every year or so, another movie comes out about how hard it is being a teen. Those darn parents that pay for your existence, not being one of the popular kids, relationships, etc. The Edge of Seventeen is just that movie. I was really intrigued by this film because it was produced by the legendary James L. Brooks, whom I worship. I’ve also seen ads with reviews praising it and comparing it to Mean Girls and Juno, two quintessential “awkward teen movies.” Unfortunately, this movie definitely did not live up to the hype.

Hailee Steinfield plays Nadine, a typical teen who is always comparing herself to her older, cooler brother. When her best and only friend starts going out with said popular brother, Nadine begins to feel more alone and depressed than ever. She turns to her favorite teacher/father figure, Mr. Bruner (played by Woody Harrelson), for guidance and company. This relationship is probably one of the best and funniest parts of the film, with Harrelson and Steinfeld delivering hilarious dialogue back and forth. But despite the occasionally well-delivered joke and Harrelson’s dry humor, this film falls flat.

For starters, Nadine isn’t a really likable character. Sure, she’s funny and pretty, but all she does is complain about how awkward she is and how terrible her life is. And while she is struggling with some major issues as well as navigating the frightening world of adolescence, to me, her complaints don’t draw any sympathy. She just sounds like a spoiled brat who lashes out when her mom doesn’t pay enough attention to her.

Another big thing that bothers me about these teen movies is that all the actors they cast are all really attractive, even the supposed “losers.” That was the problem here. Nadine is a perfectly attractive girl with a quirky-but-cute sense of style and a sharp, snarky wit. That, to me, seems like a recipe for popularity, or at least a decent amount of friends. But apparently Nadine only has one friend, which isn’t really explained other than Nadine’s tendency to be “awkward.” Raise your hand if you never felt awkward once during your teen years. Yeah, that’s what I thought.

And while this film is about an awkward teenager, I feel as though they could have shared a very important message about teen depression, which is a serious issue on the rise. However, while it is brought up from time to time that Nadine is struggling with depression, the topic is mostly skirted around and never really resolved. This film couldn’t decide if it wanted to be a light-hearted, feel-good comedy or a sensitive, emotional look at the struggles of growing up. Some films are good at playing both sides, but this one just didn’t do it for me.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: Member of Green Lantern Corps. to Make Appearance

Lots of fans have been wondering if the Green Lantern will appear in Justice League. But as he's yet to be established in an form in the current DC cineverse, many counted him out. Today, Umberto Gonzalez at The Wrap dropped a "mini-scoop."

A member of the Green Lantern Corps. will be seen in "Justice League" in a key sequence.

Short and sweet and not much to go on at the same time. My guess it that it's would be Abin Sur and that he dies by the end of Justice League. That's pure speculation on my part. We'll have to wait and see if more things leak or are announced before the movie's November 17, 2017 (USA) release date.

Emilia Clarke Joins Lucasfilm's HAN SOLO Film

Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke has just landed another great movie role! Lucasfilm has cast her in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's highly anticipated Han Solo standalone film! The news comes from StarWars.com who says:

"StarWars.com is excited to announce that Clarke, known for her stirring portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones, will join the upcoming untitled Han Solo Star Wars movie. Clarke’s role will round out a dynamic cast of characters that Han and Chewie will encounter on their adventures."

Clarke joins Alden Ehrenreich, who is taking on the role of Han Solo, and Donald Glover, who was recently cast in the role of Lando Calrissian.

It's unclear if this is the same role that actresses Tessa Thompson (Creed), Zoe Kravitz (Divergent), Naomi Scott (Power Rangers), and Adria Arjona (Emerald City) were all in the running for.

Clarke could be playing a different character, but there's no information on who that might be. She'll make a solid addition to this ensemble cast. The movie is set to be released in 2018.
