New WILLY WONKA Film Potentially An Origin Story

$
0
0

Slashfilm is strongly hinting that the newly announced Willy Wonka film will be an origin story. That indication comes from an interview the team did with producer David Heyman, who had this to say...

"It’s not a remake. They’ve done two films, quite different. But it’s possibly an origin story. We’re just in the early stages of it, working with a writer called Simon Rich, which is wonderful."

The film will be based on the character created by author Roald Dahl, but not so much from the source material. This seems mainly due to the fact that there are no details of Wonka's past or future outside of the book...

"It’s challenging because you don’t have Dahl, you don’t have a Dahl book, and yet you have a Dahl character. But I think there’s a lot in his character that suggests who he is and also where he might come from or what his childhood or his middle age might have been like. So we’re exploring that. We’re discussing it. We’re in the very early stages and very excited about what lies ahead."

I'm trying to imagine what a film about Willy Wonka in his youth would be about, and I genuinely can't picture it. Can we assume that Johnny Depp is back in as Wonka, or will the studio go another direction and pull in someone younger for the role? I guess I should wait on that speculation until it's confirmed that this is for sure going to be an origin story.

Watch: Abandoned Movie Sets You Can Visit

Before you jump into the comments and go on a Looper rant, I've already heard it before. While their videos on actors tend to be click bait and their information shady at best, I made an exception for this one. For starters, all of these abandoned movie sets are easily confirmed by simple Google searches, so you don't have to worry about their validity. Secondly, it's a good video with some locations I didn't know about prior to watching!

Anyone else want to road trip to Alabama to see the town of Spectre from Big Fish? Any locations near your neck of the woods the video missed?

Fun Trailer for a Throwback Horror Film About a Creepy VHS Board Game BEYOND THE GATES

fun-trailer-for-a-throwback-horror-film-about-a-creepy-vhs-board-game-beyond-the-gates4

You've got to watch this trailer for a fun looking throwback horror thriller called Beyond the Gates. I wasn't really sure what to make of this film when I first started watching the trailer, and then it got to a point where the main characters start playing a VHS-type board game in which they have to play to save their missing father's soul. That's the concept that grabbed my attention, and I love the whole VHS throwback vibe of it. It looks like it will be an entertaining flick! You can read Ben's review of it here. This is the synopsis:

The movie stars Graham Skipper (Almost Human) and Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End) as "two estranged brothers who reunite to sift through the contents of their missing dad’s VHS rental store. Among the inventory, they discover an interactive VCR board game, which their father viewed just before he vanished. Intrigued, the pair pop in the tape, press play, and soon discover that, far from an ordinary game, the video is a portal to a nightmarish alternate reality overseen by a sinister hostess, played by Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), and that in order to save their father’s soul, they must play by her rules."

The movie was directed by Jackson Stewart, who had this to say about the project:

“Steve Scarlata, my co-writer, who produced Jodorowsky’s Dune, he pitched me this idea of a VCR board game that opens another dimension. I said, ‘That’s the best idea I’ve ever heard. We have to start writing on that today.’ We started outlining it that afternoon and we were shooting about 11 months from when we first started writing.”

The movie also stars Brea Grant (Heroes), Matt Mercer (the Contracted franchise), Jesse Merlin (FDR: American Badass!), Jesse Welborn (The Crazies), Sara Malakul Lane (Sun Choke), and Henry LeBlanc. The film will get a limited theatrical release and a VOD release on December 9th.

The AOL "You've Got Mail" Guy Now Drives an Uber in Ohio

You would think one of the '90s most iconic voices would be doing pretty well for himself! While I don't know the current financial state of former AOL voice man Elwood Edwards, I do know that he is driving an Uber in Ohio. If I remember from a post I did about this guy not too long ago, he didn't make much money from his recorded lines and got the job because his wife worked for the company and he happened to work in the broadcasting business.

Supposedly Elwood drives for Uber in the Cleveland, Ohio, area so if you're ever in the city, try to find him for a ride!

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Concept Art Gives Us a New Look at The Vulture

Some new concept art has surfaced for Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming and it offers us a new look at the character design for The Vulture. The is the main villain that Spider-Man will be facing off against in the film. We've already seen a piece of concept art showing the two characters locked in battle.

This latest piece of art comes from a screenshot taken by Reddit user Mackey_00. I'm not sure what stage of development this concept art comes from, but it features a more practical-looking version of the character wearing military-type pilot gear, which is of course modified. Look at those wings and boots with mechanical talons on them. It looks like this design could be what the villain wears early on in the film before he gets his slick-looking suit.

There's still no official word on who is exactly playing The Vulture but it's rumored to be Michael Keaton, which we all hope turns out to be true. There are two other villains that will show up in the movie. One is Shocker, who is being played by Bokeem Woodbine, and the other is still a mystery, but he or she will reportedly play a larger role in the upcoming films.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is being directed by Jon Watts and it also stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. It's set to swing into theaters on July 7, 2017.

If you stop and take a deep breath, you can just barely feel it. No, I'm not talking about stress from the election...I'm talking about the fact that a brand new Star Wars movie is on the horizon. We're just over a month away from the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Gareth Edwards' new film is sure to have us talking about it for months afterwards (hopefully in a good way).

Lucasfilm has released a new set of two international posters, and the team at Star Wars Aficionado (via /Film) tracked down some behind the scenes images that focus on the movie's practical effects (like a cool front projection set up at Pinewood Studios to simulate jumping into hyperspace) and real location shoots. Take a look below, and keep your fingers crossed that Edwards' ground-level approach to this war story didn't get too sanded down by those extensive reshoots.

Rogue One hits theaters on December 16, 2016.

You gotta see this cool prosthetic this guy made so that he could become a tattoo artist! JC Sheitan Tenet hasn't had an arm since age 10, but has long had a desire to make tattoos. Eventually, he met artist Jean-Louis Gonzal and the two combined their brain power to make a device that looks like something straight out of a film!

Tenet now has a prosthetic tattoo machine arm that allows him full range of motion and the ability to have 360 degrees of motion. This unique ability allows Tenet to create designs much easier than others with a normal hand! Hear the rest of his story in the video below.

Premiere Dates For The New Seasons of IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY and MAN SEEKING WOMAN

We just saw the ridiculous first teaser trailer for season twelve (!) of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia a few days ago, and at that point we only knew that the show would return sometime in 2017. That's a pretty vague release date window, but we could guess that since the most recent season began on January 6, this coming season might start around the same time (the show hasn't aired a new episode since March). Thankfully, we now know exactly when we'll get to see The Gang get back up to their batshit crazy antics: Deadline reports that Sunny will be back up and running on FXX on January 4, 2017.

There's also some good news for those of us who really dig Jay Baruchel's underrated series Man Seeking Woman. That show is paired with Sunny on FXX, so its third season premiere will happen on the same night: January 4th. Chances are pretty good that you haven't seen much (if any) of this series, and I implore you to give it a chance. Download the FX app and go through the first two seasons during the upcoming holidays — it's innovative, truthful, and downright hilarious at times, and I'm sure you won't regret it. Once you've watched through season 2, episode 7 ("Cactus"), be sure to read my editorial about that episode.

Jackie Chan is a Lion-Driving Archaeologist in Wild Trailer For KUNG FU YOGA

If you read that headline and wondered what I meant by a "lion-driving archaeologist," let me assure you it's exactly what it sounds like. In a new movie called Kung Fu Yoga, martial arts legend Jackie Chan plays China's best archaeologist, who goes on a crazy treasure hunt and at one point ends up driving a car with a freakin' lion in the backseat of it. (It's very likely a digital lion, but still. The dude is 62 years old, so cut him some slack.) Chan teams up with a roguish young treasure-seeker to retrieve an artifact called the Shiva Eye from a greedy baddie, and needless to say, this movie looks pretty bonkers. Check out the trailer for yourselves below.

Kung Fu Yoga hits Chinese theaters on January 28, but doesn't have a U.S. release date yet.

Trivia: FANTASTIC BEASTS Star Eddie Redmayne Auditioned For The Role of Kylo Ren

$

It's been nearly a year since Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out, and along with Rey, Finn, and Poe, one of the instant fan favorite characters was the villainous Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver. It wasn't long before he was practically memed to death online, and the fan fiction flew fast and hard from the moment people left the theater. Driver did a great job, but in a new interview with Uproxx, we found out an interesting piece of trivia: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star Eddie Redmayne auditioned for that same role.

You mention auditioning for the same roles as Domhnall Gleeson a lot. When you auditioned for Star Wars, did you audition for Hux?
No. So, I was going for, I think, for Adam Driver. They gave me like a Star Trek scene – or like something from Pride and Prejudice. It was one of those films. With films that top secret, they don’t give you the actual lines. So they give you a scene from Pride and Prejudice, but then they tell you you’re auditioning for the baddie. If you’re me, you then put some ridiculous voice on.
That was really a hilarious moment. Because it was [casting director] Nina Gold, who I have to thank a lot because she’s cast me in several films. And she was just sitting there and I was trying again and again with different versions of my kind of “koohh paaaah” [Darth Vader breathing sound] voice. And after like ten shots she’s like, “You got anything else?” I was like, “No.”

Sounds like he bombed that one pretty badly. I feel like Redmayne might have been able to handle the petulant aspects of Ren's character, but he couldn't have been nearly as imposing or threatening. He would have just seemed like too much of a cry baby. Driver's Ren was occasionally impetuous, but he always felt like he could do real damage at any point if he didn't control himself. I think Redmayne might have come across as too whiny and weak, which doesn't really work for someone the audience is supposed to sympathize with and be scared of in the same film.

What do you think? Would Redmayne have been a better Kylo Ren than Adam Driver?

THE FLASH Stars Ezra Miller and Kiersey Clemons Comment on The Movie's Director Struggles

$

0

As you all know by now, Dope director Rick Famuyiwa has left Warner Bros. and DC Films' live-action The Flash solo film due to creative differences, marking the second time a director has either left or been removed from that project. (The first director attached was Pride and Prejudice and Zombies writer Seth Grahame-Smith.) I'd imagine that'd be a tough thing for lead actors Ezra Miller and Kiersey Clemons to hear, and maybe especially Clemons, who was cast as Iris West after working with Famuyiwa on Dope. She recently spoke with THR about the director leaving the film, and she's not thrilled about it:

"Rick was one of the main reasons I wanted to do the movie. So him not being a part of it is obviously very upsetting to me. All I can do is give it up to the gods. Let's see what happens. Let's see who's going to jump in. Ezra and I are going to do what we promised to do from the beginning. No matter who the director is, I am going to do what I think Iris should be."

Meanwhile, Miller spoke with Collider and though he referred to the situation as a "tragic relay race," it seems he still has a bit more hopeful outlook on things:

"These processes are complicated, and I think it can—from afar—appear to be, as you say, something interpersonal or dramatic. That is rarely the case. These are groups of people taking the development of projects extremely seriously, and the teams are changing all the time. There’s often a lot of flux in who the team of the production of a film is before that production starts, and in this case, you hear about it, because it’s a critical figure—the directors that have been coming on and leaving. For me, it’s sort of a tragic relay race, and we’ve had a couple really incredible people carry this baton, and their marks are left on that baton, and the work that they’ve given to the project will certainly be represented in whatever the final product comes to be."

The Flash is scheduled to hit theaters on March 16, 2018, and filming was supposed to start in March of next year, but one report indicates it will likely be delayed because Miller has another movie to shoot next summer. We'll have to wait and see if the studio can find a replacement director to step in before that delay happens and possibly keep this thing on track.

See E.T.'s Astronomically High Phone Bill For When He "Phoned Home"

$

"E.T. phone home" was a huge catchphrase back in 1982 thanks to Steven Spielberg's mega-hit E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and that was a time when long distance phone calls were a much bigger deal (and more costly) than they are today. Now, 34 years after the film debuted, TollFreeForwarding.com has put together an estimate of how much that iconic phone call from Elliott and E.T.'s makeshift communication device to E.T.'s home world of Brodo Asogi would cost, and the result is absolutely insane.

Based on research about how much a call would cost per mile from California, they figured out the film's call would have cost a mind-boggling $76,424,516,944,816,700.00. That's 76 quadrillion dollars. As the site's fun facts point out, that amount is more than 2 million times than Spielberg's $3.7 billion net worth. Click over to the site for a second and check it out for yourselves...it's pretty fun.

Back in August, we re-launched The Not Just New Movies Podcast as a monthly show, and our first episode back from our years-long break dove into E.T. Give it a listen here if you haven't yet, and while you're doing that, check out the other cool shows over at PodTyrant.

Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Tiger Chen Will Be a TRIPLE THREAT For JOHN WICK Director

$

If you're a fan of kick-ass martial arts movies, you already know who those three actors are in the headline. But in case you aren't, and maybe you're just curious about what John Wick co-director (and John Wick: Chapter 2 solo directorChad Stahelski might be up to next, allow me to introduce you to three of the baddest mofos on the planet. Before we get to the intros, let's get to the good stuff: THR reports that these guys will be joining forces in a movie called Triple Threat. The script, written by Dwayne Smith, "revolves around a Chinese martial artist who goes to Mexico to rescue his ex-wife and their son after they are kidnapped by a drug cartel." Wang Xiaolie is set to co-direct the movie with Stahelski.

Why is this cool news? Because the stars are insanely awesome. Tony Jaa is the star of Thai action films like the Ong-Bak series and The Protector, and he's recently branched into mainstream Hollywood studio movies like Furious 7 and xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.

Tiger Chen co-starred opposite Keanu Reeves in Man of Tai Chi and has a movie called Kung Fu Cyborg on the way. (What else could possibly need to be said about that?)

And Iko Uwais is the badass star of Gareth Evans' hard-hitting The Raid movies and another kick-ass martial arts film Evans made called Merantau.

If you watched all of those clips and still aren't excited about this movie, I'm not sure what to tell you. You may want to check to see if you still have a pulse, because these guys working with one of the guys behind John Wick sounds like a pretty damn great opportunity for some more jaw-dropping displays of badassery.

STRANGER THINGS: Shawn Levy Will Be Back to Direct in Season 2 and Teases Season 3

$
0
0

It may be hard to think about in the midst of all of this election insanity, but assuming the world doesn't plummet into complete chaos and our country remains standing in the coming months, we'll still have entertainment to distract us from the craziness of real world events. One of the pieces of entertainment we're looking forward to the most is season 2 of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers' Netflix show that took the pop culture world by storm this summer with its surprisingly fantastic first season. We've written a lot about what we know about the show so far (including the new additions of Sean Astin and Paul Reiser), but now producer and director Shawn Levy has a bit more to say about it in a new interview with Collider.

Levy directed the third and fourth episodes of season one because the Duffers needed more time to finish writing the back half of the season, and according to him, they're going to keep that directing pattern alive...at least for the first four episodes of season 2:

“Yes, we are a little superstitious so just like last year, they’re doing 1 and 2, I’m going in and doing 3 and 4. So the first four are gonna kick off exactly the same as last time… I am going to start prepping right around Thanksgiving and I’ll be filming my episodes through December and January.”

He said production on season 2 officially began yesterday, November 7th, but he wouldn't commit to exactly how much time has passed in the show since season 1 ended:

“I’m not gonna say how much time has gone by. It is not the next day, I’ll say that. And there are several new characters who I think several of them are going to be new fan-favorites because they’re great, great new characters. But we are definitely sticking primarily with our core group, and what is different, how are they changed from the experience of last season… maybe ‘normal’ is never possible again. Will Byers was in that Upside Down for a while. So Season 2 is about this determined desire to return to normalcy in Hawkins, in the Byers family, in that group of friends, and it’s the struggle to reclaim normalcy and maybe the impossibility of it.”

As for season 3, Levy didn't give any real specifics (obviously), but he did mention that they were already planning ahead and are hopeful about a renewal:

“We are not gonna be caught off guard and we don’t wanna be making stuff up like the day before we have to write it and make it, so we are definitely optimistic and we have started thinking ahead.”

While he wouldn't say exactly when we could expect to see the show return to Netflix other than the vague "2017" release date promised in the teaser trailer, he reminded us that there are going to be nine episodes in season 2, which is one more than season 1, so it's possible they'll premiere slightly later next year than they did this year. Either way, we can't wait to see what they all come up with when Stranger Things comes back.

Watch: INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE Gets an Honest Trailer

I heard such awful things about Independence Day: Resurgence that I didn't even bother seeing it. I'm a huge Jeff Goldblum fan, and I was really interested in seeing what he and Bill Pullman could do reprising their roles in a sequel set twenty years after the original, but by nearly all accounts, the movie is a giant mess. I'm still curious enough that I'll eventually end see it for myself to form my own opinion about it, but it sounds as if the ScreenJunkies team tapped into fandom's collective frustration with this film in their latest Honest Trailer.
