New Photo and Description Released From THE BIG LEBOWSKI Spin-Off Featuring "The Jesus"

$

In case you weren't aware, there is a spin-off of the Coen Brothers' The Big Lebowski in the works. We saw the first photo of actor John Turturro from Going Places a little while back, and now /Film points us to a new photo and a description of the film that will focus on the minor Lebowski character Jesus Quintana.

John Turturro plays Jesus Quintana in GOING PLACES, a film about a trio of misfits whose irreverent, sexually charged dynamic evolves into a surprising love story as their spontaneous and flippant attitude towards the past or future backfires time and again, even as they inadvertently perform good deeds. When they make enemies with a gun-toting hairdresser, their journey becomes one of constant escape from the law, from society and from the hairdresser, all while the bonds of their outsider family strengthen.

That sounds interesting! While I'm more than happy to hear we get more Turturro, I was a little leery about a film featuring a character described as a pederast in the film. Perhaps Jesus will tell the full story and it's possible Walter Sobjack was mistaken?

Let's hope this film is as good as the one it's spinning off from!

WESTWORLD Star Evan Rachel Wood Says The Season 1 Finale is Mind-Blowing

The cynical among you can feel free to simply chalk this up as another example of an actress hyping up her own work in order to get people to tune in, but those who are excited about HBO's Westworld will certainly be tantalized by star Evan Rachel Wood's comments regarding the season one finale. We're only four episodes into the first season, and with six more episodes to go, we're all on even ground: critics were given access to the first four episodes early, but now we'll all have to watch it live at the same time to see how the story unfolds. And according to Wood, "the surprises will floor you" and when we watch episodes 9 and 10, we should be ready "to have your heart broken and your mind blown."

/Film points us to an interview Wood did with The Huffington Post, in which she gave us more ideas about what to expect:

“We’re getting out of Sweetwater and getting deeper into the park, on the outskirts. We’ve established that the farther out you go, the more intense the game gets, and man, were they not kidding because when we started getting the scripts after episodes five, and episode five, it was like, ‘Whoa! OK!’” Wood said. “Not only are they dropping bombs left and right, but some of the days on set, I would be like, ‘Look, I’ve seen some stuff, and this is WILD,’” said Wood, later adding: “It will only continue to get more and more intense and more relentless. We’ve set everything up really beautifully and the payoffs are going to start hitting you one by one.”

That definitely sounds good to me. I'm sort of in a weird place with this show, because I really like the mysterious aspects of it, but I don't think I care about the main characters as much as the show wants me to at this stage. I'm hoping that they dive a little deeper into the characterization as the season progresses, but I must say I'm looking forward to all of those payoffs as season one blasts through its back half and to a close. What do you think about Wood's comments, and about the show itself so far?

Tom Cruise Will Play Biblical Elder METHUSELAH For Warner Bros.

Deadline reports that Tom Cruise will star in Warner Bros.' Methuselah, a movie about the Biblical man who lived longer than any man in history (some believe he lived to be 969 years old). But how can an action movie stalwart like Cruise make playing the oldest man who ever lived into something worthy of his particular set of skills?

This will be an epic vehicle for Warner Bros that calls for someone of [Cruise's] stature to take on the heavy-hitting role of a man who lived for almost 1,000 years without aging, all while developing a set of unparalleled survival skills.

So he'll be a survivalist badass, not some crooked-backed geezer with a cane. That sounds a little more like the Cruise I know. Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts producer David Heyman is on board to produce, and the film will be directed by Joachim Rønning, one half of the directing duo responsible for Disney's upcoming sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Zach Dean wrote the script, but the project is apparently being sent out to other writers to put more of a Cruise-y spin on it before it circles back to the actor for approval.

The story must have really piqued Cruise's interest, because I find it a little odd that he'd be willing to play a Biblical figure when he's so ingrained in Scientology. I'm not saying that actors should only play characters who align with their own personal faiths or beliefs, but Cruise is such a heavily public figurehead for Scientology that, from everything I've seen and read, I'm honestly surprised David Miscavige would allow Cruise to go after a project like this.

Review: INFERNO Isn't Quite The 7th Circle of Hell, But It's Close

It’s been ten years since The Da Vinci Code saw its theatrical release, and six since its sequel, Angels and Demons. That seems like a long time to wait before releasing a third movie, especially since the first two received lukewarm reviews. For a franchise built on the observation and study of historical clues, you’d think they’d learn their lesson. But when you have names like Ron Howard, Tom Hanks, and Hans Zimmer on your payroll, why not go for broke?

Inferno is the third installment in the film adaptations of author Dan Brown's Robert Langdon series, which has four books with a fifth due out next year. The books have been quite successful, unlike their cinematic counterparts, which have seen diminishing returns at the box office. This latest film doesn’t look like it’s going to be any different.

Inferno stars Tom Hanks in his recurring role as the famed symbologist Robert Langdon. It opens with Langdon waking up in a hospital in Florence, unsure of why he’s there. Between disturbing — but super cool — hallucinations of mutilated bodies, medieval battles, and rivers of blood, he meets Dr. Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) who tells him he has a head wound and is suffering from mild retrograde amnesia, which would explain why he doesn’t have a clue as to what he’s been up to for the last two days. But before he has time to figure out what is going on, a police officer shows up and starts shooting at him. Luckily, he and Sienna are able to escape.

Once safe, Sienna and Langdon discover a “bio-tube” (high-tech device meant to transport small, highly dangerous substances) in Langdon’s coat. Inside, they find an object that projects an image onto the wall: Botticelli's Map of Hell, as described by Dante in “The Divine Comedy.” Who said high school English wouldn’t come in handy?

Inside this image, someone has hidden an anagram with a secret message. As it turns out, this someone is the now-deceased eccentric billionaire Bertrand Zobrist (Ben Foster) who believes that mass genocide is the key to saving humanity, if that makes sense. Zobrist has created a plague-like virus that will be released unless Langdon can do what he does best: solving global scavenger hunts using his vast knowledge of art history! In addition to a race against time to save humankind, Langdon and Sienna are also on the run from the World Health Organization, as well as the cop from the hospital, who actually isn’t a cop at all, but a hired gun employed by a mysterious company. You just can’t trust anyone these days.

This film had a fantastic opening that immediately grabbed my attention, but as the story progressed, I struggled to keep up with all the different characters and their motives. And while I have found myself genuinely entertained by all three of these films, even I admit there were enormous gaps in the plot that were lazily glossed over or just plain ignored. And as if that weren’t bad enough, there's not one, but two half-hearted love stories, one of which is completely irrelevant to the plot.

Having only read The Da Vinci Code, I can’t say how well this movie stayed true to the book, but I have a feeling that the book is probably much better. That’s sad because Dan Brown seems like a really smart guy who does a lot of research to back up his stories. If you liked the other two movies, definitely check this one out, but otherwise, I’d say give it a pass.

EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 is Both a Sequel and a Prequel, and Will "Revolutionize How People Make Sequels"

Doug Liman isn't interested in making boring, middle of the road Hollywood entertainment. He's a director who wants to push the boundaries of what's possible and how things get made, whether its turning the comic book movie genre on its head with the upcoming Justice League Dark, or crafting an awesome sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, the 2014 Tom Cruise/Emily Blunt time travel thriller that turned out to be one of the best action films of the past decade.

Liman spoke with Collider about Edge of Tomorrow 2, and revealed something cool about its structure:

“That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing—much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film—and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.”
“I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like ‘Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.’ I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels."

Man, that sounds excellent. I love the idea of trying to push beyond what's expected from a sequel, and especially considering how beloved Edge of Tomorrow is by not only the fans but all of the creative talent who made it, you know they aren't just going to crap something out just to capitalize and make money on the name. They're really looking to come back and do something cool with a sequel/prequel combo, and I love the idea of exploring this world further than what we've already seen in the original.

What did you think about Edge of Tomorrow? Are you looking forward to a sequel?

RAMBO is Getting a Feature Film Reboot Without Sylvester Stallone

$

Say it ain't so! Nu Image and Millennium Films are planning a reboot of the classic action film franchise Rambo. I'm a huge fan of Rambo and I've been waiting to see if Sylvester Stallone would ever make that fifth installment of the franchise, but it looks like that's dead now.

The worst part of the news is that Stallone will not be a part of the reboot. According to THR, this film will "see a younger actor inhabit the role. The company is looking at Rambo as a character akin to James Bond." Stallone is Rambo and replacing him with a new actor just seems utterly ridiculous.

The reboot will be called Rambo: New Blood and the production company has hired Brooks McLaren (XOXO) to write the script and Ariel Vromen (Criminal) to direct the movie.

There are no plot details to share right now but I imagine they plan to contemporize the story and character. I'm not too thrilled to hear that a classic franchise like Rambo is getting the reboot treatment, but I guess that's the kind of thing we should expect from Hollywood these days. Heaven forbid they try to come up with an original new action hero.

THE DEFENDERS Confirmed For Eight Episodes, Director Announced

The Defenders, Marvel and Netflix's equivalent of The Avengers in which the street-level heroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will all join forces to fight evil, has been confirmed to be eight episodes, and in a new announcement straight from Marvel itself, a director has been announced to tackle the first two episodes of the limited series.

Marvel.com says S.J. Clarkson has been tapped to helm the first two episodes. This marks a return to the MCU for Clarkson, who has previously directed episodes of Jessica Jones. She has even more history with Netflix, having directed some of Orange is the New Black as well.

“S.J.'s take on the material is outstanding. We loved her work on “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” and couldn’t think of a more talented and accomplished person to helm the first two episodes of “Marvel’s The Defenders,” said Marvel’s Head of Television and Executive Producer, Jeph Loeb.

The Defenders is set to arrive sometime in 2017, and they'll face off against none other than Sigourney Weaver as the villain. To read everything we know about the limited series, click here

See More Joker in New SUICIDE SQUAD: EXTENDED CUT Trailer

Are you one of the people who thought Jared Leto didn't get enough screen time as the Joker in Suicide Squad? (Heck, I didn't even like his performance very much, and I still thought he should have been on screen more.) Birth.Movies.Death points us to a new trailer for the extended cut of the movie, which arrives on Digital HD on November 11th and will hit Blu-ray on December 13, 2016.

I don't think Leto held a candle to what Heath Ledger did in The Dark Knight, but there were those who saw Suicide Squad and thought that giving him more screen time to develop his gangster take on the character might have improved the movie. I suppose we don't have much longer to wait to see if that ends up being true, but either way, we'll be seeing plenty more of Leto's Joker in future installments of the DC Extended Universe.

I don't know about you, but I kind of miss the Mike Judge animated series King of the Hill. It was really a great show that was wonderfully entertaining. We don't really ever see a lot of fan-made stuff for the series so when I saw this intro recreated in pixels, I had to share it because it's pretty cool. The video was created by Mauri Helme and I hope you enjoy the flashback of memories it brings.

The Origin and History of Movie Trailers Explained

Like many of you, I absolutely love watching movie trailers! For film geeks, it's exciting to see what upcoming movies we can to look forward to seeing. They give us our first taste of what a movie will be and are created with the sole purpose of selling us on that film.

If you've ever wondered how movie trailers got started, we've got a great video from the YouTube channel Today I Found Out that breaks down the origin and history of trailers. One of the things they talk about is how back in the day, trailers weren't shown until the end of the movie, which is why they were called trailers in the first place.

I know that is common knowledge for a lot of people, but it would be so weird watching trailers at the end of movies these days. Anyway, it's an interesting video worth checking out when you get a chance. You can also watch another video that breaks down the history of trailers right here if you want.

Dark and Tragic Retelling of Harley Quinn's Origin Story in Fan Comic

Artist Stjepan Sejic is mostly known for a lot of the humorous fan comics he creates. We've featured a lot of stuff of his in the past, some of which you can see here. In one of his more recent pieces, he retells the origin story of Harley Quinn and how she fell under The Joker's control. There's no humor in this one — this is a very dark and tragic story. The artist explains:

"It's an elseworlds approach so a lot of freedom was taken, but basically I had this idea of humanizing villains. Harley always struck me as a fascinating character because she was a psychiatrist. She could literally recognize her own pathology while being unable to stop it.

"Like I said, it's an elseworlds take. Some things aren't the same. Harley here is a skilled, if tunnelvisiones psychiatrist who sees the joker as both a challenge and a potential solution to her theory of mental disorder as a survival mechanism.

"What starts off as a professional fascination goes horribly wrong."

It's pretty intense and totally worth checking out if you get a chance. I really liked the artist's take on the character. The comic isn't finished, and the artist says it will not be finished — he describes it as "glorified warmup fanart."

Nightmarish Guillermo Del Toro-Produced Gothic Horror Short THE CAPTURED BIRD

I've got a wonderfully creepy gothic horror short film for you to watch today called The Captured Bird. It was produced by Guillermo del Toro and written and directed by Jovanka Vuckovic. The film tells a dark yet poetic tale of a little girl "who witnesses the birth of five terrifying supernatural beings that bring about her demise."

This is a really great short with some fantastically nightmarish visuals and I thought it'd be another fun horror movie to watch during this season of Halloween. It has all the creepiness that you'd expect from a del Toro film and Vuckovic does a great job bringing the nightmare to life.

Ron Howard Shares His Thoughts About a Possible WILLOW TV Series

$

I've recently been seeing a ton of rumors going around involving a Willow sequel. I don't know if you've seen those or not, but they're not true. There is currently no Willow sequel in development...that we know of. Disney obtained the rights to Willow when they purchased Lucasfilm, so there is a possibility that a sequel or remake could happen as a film or even a TV series somewhere down the road.

While talking to the Nerdist, director Ron Howard was asked what he thinks of a possible Willow TV series and this was his reply:

"Warwick Davis is such a great guy, who played Willow. He remains a close friend, and I'm always rooting for it to become like a TV series or something because he's such a talented guy. He's been in so many wonderful fantasy movies since then, and comedies and other things. I know I'd like to watch a Willow television show. I think that'd be a blast."

If Disney ever did move forward with a sequel to Willow, they'd have to bring Warwick Davis back! It just wouldn't be Willow without him. He's Willow! That being said, I'd be totally up for seeing the story of Willow continue as a film sequel or TV series. I just have no idea if Disney is even considering it at this point.
