THE SHINING: FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS Film Edit Gives Us a New Perspective on Stanley Kubrick's Horror Masterpiece

0
0

If you're a fan of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and you've got a couple of hours to spare today, you've got to watch this experimental edit of the film. It's called The Shining: Forwards and Backwards, and you get to watch the film from start to finish and from finish to start at the same time as they are superimposed on one another. I've heard about this film and it was even featured in The Shining documentary Room 237.

John Fell Ryan and Akiva Saunders are the creators of the experimental film and they premiered it back in 2011 for an audience. It's had a few other screenings over the years but now it's online for all of you to watch! I have no idea how long it will last on the internet before it gets pulled off by the studio, so you should probably watch it while you have the chance!

It's pretty damn fascinating and there are some cool oddities and strange occurrences that pop up while you watch it. You can check out a couple breakdowns of the film pointing out some of these cool things here and here. Here's the note that accompanied the video.

Since I’m a film editor and a somewhat slavish fan of all things Kubrick…I have re-created the experiment and am posting an HD version of it so you can judge for yourself. I began by aligning the forward and backwards versions to match still frames available on-line from the original experimental project. All I needed to do was eye-match one frame and the rest would be in synch.

If you're a hardcore fan of The Shining, you're going to love this.

Kevin Hart To Play Santa in Disney's DASHING THROUGH THE SNOW

Kevin Hart will play Santa Claus in the upcoming Disney film Dashing Through The Snow. According to THR, the film is about a workaholic NYC detective who has lost the Christmas spirit, and his connection with his son. It's now up to Santa (Hart) to restore the man's spirit and his relationship with his son.

No word on who Hart will be starring alongside, but for some reason my head is telling me it's probably gonna be Mark Wahlberg? I hear "overworked dad with not enough time for his kids," and he just fills the profile. Plus, Wahlberg worked with Will Ferrell, who worked with Hart, so it's obvious? Okay, the logic is devolving...I really have no clue who it'll be.

With no lead and director, it's safe to say this film won't be ready for holiday 2016, but I'd be surprised if it arrives after Christmas 2017.

Video: 24 Ways POLTERGEIST II and INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 Are Basically The Same Movie

Couch Tomato is back with a new "24 Reasons" video, and this one looks at the weird similarities between Poltergeist II and James Wan's Insidious: Chapter 2. You know the deal with these videos by now: they don't just point out the structural coincidences or shared plot beats, but they also get into the strangely specific, nitty-gritty details that both movies have in common. Those are the ones that are really interesting to me — like a toy phone factoring into the plot. Check this out and let us know what you think:

Jim Gaffigan Joins Season 3 Of FARGO

Jim Gaffigan will be added to the cast of FX's hit drama Fargo, the adaptation of the Coen Brothers' Oscar-winning movie, for its third season. THR reports that Gaffigan will play a police deputy named Donny Mashman. Gaffigan will join Carrie Coon, Ewan McGregor, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who were announced as part of the show's cast earlier this year.

McGregor is going to be the star of the series and will be playing a set of twin brothers on what will be his first television series. I'm super excited for the lineup, which has been strong for the series since its beginning. If you haven't watched the show, I highly suggest you give either season a try! Season 3 is set to premiere sometime in late 2017.

Final Trailer For Ang Lee's Divisive BILLY LYNN'S LONG HALFTIME WALK

0

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, the latest film from director Ang Lee, has become incredibly controversial among film fans — not for its content, but for the way it was shot. See, instead of opting for the regular 24 frames per second that we're used to with film, Lee shot the movie in 120 frames per second in order to "dramatize war in a way never seen before." The problem is that when you watch something shot at 120 frames per second, it doesn't actually look like film. You know how some TVs have that "motion smoothing" option on that makes everything look like a bad soap opera? This sounds about 10 times worse than that. (Peter Jackson tried something similar with The Hobbit, shooting that in 48 frames per second. That also didn't go over very well with audiences.)

Though the quotes in this trailer praise the movie's technical decisions, when Billy Lynn played at the New York Film Festival, it debuted to a tepid reaction and one critic even referred to its presentation as "a crime against cinema."

But it turns out most audiences probably won't have to worry about seeing it in that format anyway, since apparently only two theaters in the country will be capable of displaying it in 3D 4K 120 frame per second. Lee and Sony Pictures have converted it into other formats which will be available at more theaters in the US, so if you're interested in seeing this one, just be aware of which presentation you're selecting when you purchase your tickets.

The film arrives in theaters on November 11th.

Mini-Doc Tackles SOUTH PARK and Censorship

Did you know South Park was the first series to receive television's TV-MA rating? What's even better is what was considered extreme in season one doesn't even hold a candle to what is considered "mature" now. In his latest video, KaptainKristian highlights the history of the show and its history and the evolution of censorship in American television.

Before you watch, please remember that this show is the definition of NSFW and that you most likely should not watch this video at work.

Mexico City Decides To Hold Day of The Dead Parade After Seeing How Cool It Looked in SPECTRE

Mexico City has decided to hold its first ever Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) parade after seeing how cool the concept looked in the James Bond film Spectre. News 18 reports that the parade will start at Angel of Independence monument and end at the historic Zocalo square, and attendees will see many of the props and costumes present in the film. The whole event happens on October 29th.

Pretty crazy that a film has inspired a real-life event that many assumed already happened! As Reddit points out, however, this isn't the first time this has happened. In fact, The Catalina Islands now host a Catalina Wine Mixer after the comedy film Step Brothers hyped it up so much!

Do you think Mexico will also honor Superman during the festival as well?

DOCTOR STRANGE Goes Upside Down in New TV Spot

We're only a few days away from the official release of Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange, and the studio has released a brand new TV spot for the film in an effort to convince you to see it. If you pay close enough attention, you'll see a familiar name pop up there: your boy is reppin' GeekTyrant with a quote from my review. I really dug the movie, and I think any fan of superhero movies — not just Marvel movies — will love the distinct, unique visuals on display here. Scott Derrickson and his team did a terrific job bringing the pages of the comics to life, and I can't wait to hear what you all think of the movie when it drops on November 4, 2016.

Take a Bite Out of Mike With This Eerily Realistic BREAKING BAD and BETTER CALL SAUL Cake

Natalie Sideserf and the team at Sideserf Cake Studio are back with another intricately detailed cake based on a TV character. This time, they've paid tribute to the quiet, stoic badass Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. This looks great and everything, but I think I'd find it unsettling to carve a bit out of a guy's head when it looks that realistic.

A while back, Sideserf made a cake based on co-star Bob Odenkirk's head, so this one would look nice sitting alongside that one in a display. Well, maybe not — the Odenkirk cake is over a year old, so it'd probably be all moldy by now.

J.K. Rowling's CORMORAN STRIKE Novels Being Adapted Into HBO Limited Series

0
0

It's a good time to be J.K. Rowling. Not that the same couldn't be said for any given stretch over the past fifteen years or so, but right now seems to be an especially good time for the mega-successful Harry Potter author. Not only does she have a movie using her first screenplay, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, coming out next month (with four more movies in that series set to follow), but THR reports that HBO has picked up the rights to Cormoran Strike, a limited series based on Rowling's crime novels that she wrote under the pen name of Robert Galbraith.

From BBC One, Cormoran Strike centers on Strike (War and Peace star Tom Burke), a war veteran turned private detective operating out of a tiny office in London’s Denmark Street. Though he’s wounded both physically and psychologically, Strike’s unique insight and his background as an Special Investigation Branch investigator prove key in solving three complex cases which have eluded the police.
Cormoran Strike will be broken up into three separate event series, starting with the three-hour installment The Cuckoo’s Calling, followed by The Silkworm and Career of Evil, each of which will run two hours.
Ben Richards (The Tunnel) wrote Cuckoo’s Calling and Silkworm, and Tom Edge (The Last Dragon Slayer) penned Career of EvilMichael Keillor (Line of Duty) will direct the first chapter.

Rowling will executive produce the limited series, which will mark her return to HBO after the network aired the miniseries adaptation of her book The Casual Vacancy back in 2015. (Side note: did anyone see that miniseries? I remember hearing about it, but I never saw a single trailer, commercial or review for it and have never heard anyone mention it.) Have you read any of the Cormoran Strike books? Think this will make for good TV?

Watch: Bruce Wayne Recruits All of The Live-Action Batmen in BATMAN LEAGUE

DarthBlender is back with another pop culture mashup, and this time he's giving The Dark Knight a new team of his own. Using footage from our early look at Zack Snyder's Justice League, the YouTuber has cut together a video that makes it appear as if Ben Affleck's Batman is recruiting all of the other famous live-action Batmen across the ages (Adam West, Micheal Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale). It's a pretty solid edit, and I especially enjoyed the section in which he has Ezra Miller's goofy Flash lines come out of Clooney's mouth.

Benedict Cumberbatch Wants Doctor Strange to Unite The Avengers in INFINITY WAR

0
0

The Avengers were in a pretty tough spot when we last saw them at the end of Civil War, but if Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch has anything to say about it, they won't remain separated for long.

Speaking with Yahoo UK to promote his upcoming Marvel adventure, Cumberbatch offered his thoughts about how Strange is going to factor into the mix in the next superhero team-up film:

I think he has to be Team Doctor Strange. His job title is ‘defender of the fabric of reality.’ I mean, he fights other-dimensional threats that are beyond the perception of that very potent squabble. I’d like to think he’s going to help them both, rather than take sides.

Now clearly, an actor saying "I'd like to think he's going to help them" isn't a full-on official confirmation of what's going to happen in Avengers: Infinity War (which is where we'll see his character next), but I have to assume he's at least been briefed about the larger plans for Strange's role in the upcoming films, and this is a vague enough statement where he probably won't be targeted by Marvel's snipers for revealing too much. After all, the team can't possibly stay fractured and take on Thanos at the same time...can they?

Doctor Strange arrives in theaters on November 4, 2016.

Tom Hanks' Breakout SNL Character David S. Pumpkins Hilariously Inserted in Horror Movie Scenes

0

It's rare that an Saturday Night Live character gets quite as much attention as Tom Hanks' David S. Pumpkins did when the Inferno star hosted the sketch show this past weekend. Sure, every week you'll see the usual crowd of people laughing on Twitter about the show's various sketches, but David S. Pumpkins seemed to take on a life of his own and extend out into the larger pop culture zeitgeist. If you don't know what I'm talking about, watch this first:

If you saw that and were planning on dressing up as Pumpkins for Halloween, bad news: the costumes have already sold out online.

But now one intrepid Twitter user has taken the character to his logical conclusion: Jesse McLaren has created a video in which he inserted Pumpkins into a bunch of horror movie scenes, and the results are pretty awesome. Any questions?

This Lightsaber Lamp Will Keep Your Home From Falling to The Dark Side

0
0

Is your room looking a little drab? Now you can spruce it up with a dash of galactic awesomeness with this full-sized lightsaber floor lamp from the folks at ThinkGeek. This lamp, modeled after Kylo Ren's Sith-inspired crossguard weapon (remember when everyone on the internet totally lost their shit about that lightsaber for months leading up to The Force Awakens?), will ironically keep your room from falling into the Dark Side. (Because it's a lamp, you see.) There's also one modeled after Darth Vader's classic saber, if you're feeling more traditional.

This sucker is over five and a half feet tall, and it comes with a remote so you can control it from the other side of the room and pretend you're using the Force to turn it off and on. Hey, go for it. I won't judge. One of these will set you back $160, and you can get it here if you're interested.

THOR: RAGNAROK Wraps Production and Director Taika Waititi Shares a Fun Video From the Set

Production on Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok wrapped production today and director Taika Waititi posted an amusing video from the set of the film. It looks like they were shooting some stuff that takes place in an intergalactic junkyard. The video also gives us our first look at some characters in the film including Tessa Thompson in makeup as Valkyrie! Oh yeah, Chris Hemsworth is there as well, but we've already seen enough of him as Thor!

The movie also stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Cate Blanchett as the villain Hela, Jeff Goldblum as the eccentric Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, and Sam Neill in an unspecified role.

Thor: Ragnarok will make its way into theaters on November 3rd, 2017, and from everything that I've read about it, it will most likely be the best and craziest Thor movie yet!
