J.J. Abrams Reveals Vader vs. Luke Scene Cut From Rey's "Forceback" in THE FORCE AWAKENS

NO THIS ISN'T A SPOILER AND I SWEAR TO ALL THAT IS HOLY IF YOU SAY SO IN THE COMMENTS, I WILL SCOUR THE LAND IN WHICH YOU ROAM AND BURN IT TO THE GROUND.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's get to what J.J. Abrams has to say about his cut scene from Rey's "Forceback" moment in Star Wars: The Force AwakensComicbook reports that in the original scene, Rey was also supposed to see Luke and Vader fighting in Cloud City. Ultimately, this scene was removed as Abrams wanted it to feel "more personal to Rey":

"Touching the lightsaber triggers what we call the 'Forceback.' There were many iterations of this. In one, from the Cloud City Corridor, she looked down and saw Vader fighting Luke, which we ended up cutting. We wanted it to be a more personal story, something that she couldn’t comprehend, that was overwhelming to her, frightening to her, that was taking her through all of these elemental experiences, of fire, of rain, snow, wind. But also that she was being confronted with truths about the Force, about the past. The Knights of Ren here, the past for herself. She realizes that the cries she heard were actually her own cries as a young girl being taken away from her family. And then she hears a voice, 'Rey,' and that’s Obi-Wan Kenobi."

So what do we learn? Not really anything, in my opinion. We already know Rey has some connection to Luke from watching the film, but it's not like seeing him in a vision really does anything in explaining her origin to us.

I get so tired of the obsession over who Rey is. I think getting us to focus on her origin is intentional and done to distract us for a much bigger twist in Episode VIII. It just seems too on the nose for the big reveal of Episode VIII to be Rey's origin. I'm hoping for something more out of left field for the climax of the film, but what about you?

New Trailer For Tom Ford's Romantic Thriller NOCTURNAL ANIMALS

I never got around to seeing Tom Ford's directorial debut A Single Man from a few years ago, but I'm really looking forward to seeing his follow-up feature, Nocturnal Animals. This one has an insanely good cast that includes Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Laura Linney, and more, and it looks like just the right mixture of creepy, sexy, and suspenseful.

Focus Features has released a new trailer for the movie, but since it's only a minute and a half long and the teaser that came out a month ago is thirty seconds longer, this footage is almost entirely stuff we've seen before. But just in case this is your introduction to the movie, check it out and let us know what you think below.

Nocturnal Animals opens in limited release on November 18th and goes wide on December 9, 2016.

Ava DuVernay's A WRINKLE IN TIME Adds Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Dr. Murry

I still haven't read all of Madeleine L'Engle's Newberry Medal-winning book A Wrinkle in Time, but I'm very excited to see what Selma and 13th director Ava DuVernay does with Disney's upcoming big budget film adaptation. The story follows a young girl named Meg (Storm Reid), her little brother, and her friend who go on a search for her missing father, a government scientist who was working on a top secret project involving an inter-dimensional tesseract. Joining the trio on their journey are three supernatural beings: Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), and Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon).

Variety reports that Gugu Mbatha-Raw has joined the cast and she'll be playing Dr. Murry, Meg's mother and a scientist, who, along with Meg's father, discovers the wrinkle in time. DuVernay took to Twitter to confirm the news:

The actress has starred in a bunch of movies since her breakout role in Beyond The Lights a few years ago, including Jupiter Ascending, Concussion, and Free State of Jones, and you can also see her in one of the new episodes of Black Mirror that just hit Netflix today. She'll next appear in Jessica Chastain's Miss Sloane, Bad Robot's God Particle, and Disney's live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast.

I don't think this film has an official release date yet, but looking ahead to Disney's release schedule for the next few years, I'm guessing it'll arrive on December 25, 2018.

AVENGERS OF JUSTICE: FARCE WARS Will Spoof Marvel and STAR WARS in The Same Movie

It's been a little while since we've seen any high-profile spoof movies come through Hollywood, but it looks like another is on its way, and it's taking aim at two of the biggest forces in the entertainment industry: Marvel and Star Wars.

Variety reports that Avengers of Justice: Farce Wars, a new film from director Jarret Tarnol (See You in Valhalla), has cast Amy Smart (Road Trip, Crank), Stephen Rannazzisi (The League), Simon Rex (Scary Movie), and WWE wrestler Shawn Michaels in lead roles. In case you're interested in what the movie is about, here's Variety's breakdown:

In the film, Earth is reeling from one too many superhero and super-villain clashes. These face-offs have led to billions of dollars in damages, and forced heroes with superpowers into hiding.
Rannazzisi plays SuperBat, who has lost his fortune, mansion, and the joy he once got from crime fighting. Rex will appear as Dark Jokester, a baddie who wants to freeze the world. Michaels will appear as SuperBat’s mentor and the man who whips him into shape. Smart takes on Jean Wonder, SuperBat’s wife and Dark Jokester’s kidnap victim. In order to fight Dark Jokester, SuperBat reunites the Avengers of Justice, a group with members such as Beaverine, El Capitan South America, and ThorBacca.

My God, I thought we came together as a society and collectively rejected this kind of crap. I can't possibly be the only one who thinks this sounds abysmal, right?

You Can Now Trick Young Wizards With Your Own Tom Riddle-Themed Diary

FINALLY, a diary in which I can store my soul physically as well as metaphorically! Think Geek is now selling Tom Riddle diaries meant to look like the one that appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I guess this is for display purposes? I can't imagine why someone would actually want to write their personal thoughts and feelings in a novelty diary that they'd want to showcase to friends and fellow fans.

If you're absolutely positively needing to trick an influential young wizard, however, accept no substitutes! The diary currently costs $39.99...which feels like someone drove a basilisk fang through my wallet.

TRICK 'R TREAT Director Michael Dougherty Will Reportedly Direct GODZILLA 2

Yesterday, we found out that Trick 'r Treat writer/director Michael Dougherty and his Krampus co-writer Zach Shields had been hired to write the screenplay for Godzilla 2, Legendary Pictures' follow-up to Gareth Edwards' 2014 monster movie. But it gets better: ScreenCrush is reporting that Dougherty will direct the film as well.

Dougherty is a fun filmmaker, as seen in Trick 'r Treat and Krampus, and he has a bunch of experience not only with Legendary as a company, but with large-scale blockbusters as a writer on Superman Returns, X-Men 2, and X-Men: Apocalypse.

The site says they were unable to confirm if Dougherty and Shields are planning to use any of Edwards' ideas in their version of the sequel. Edwards reportedly wanted to include the character of Mechagodzilla in Godzilla 2, though it's also unclear whether he would have used that beast as a man-made creation (perhaps with some association to Project Monarch?) or an alien baddie.

The only downside to this news for me is that it presumably means we'll have to wait longer until we see Trick 'r Treat 2, a sequel I've been excited about since the moment it was announced a couple of years ago.

Kong: Skull Island hits theaters on March 10, 2017, and that will be followed by Godzilla 2 on March 22, 2019. It all leads up to King Kong vs. Godzilla, which is set for release on May 29, 2020.

Mads Mikkelsen Plays an Assassin in a Short Film Called LE FANTÔME From Director Jake Scott

Ridley Scott's son Jake Scott was hired by Ford to make a short film called Le Fantôme to help promote the new Ford Edge vehicle. The film stars Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Doctor Strange, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as an assassin who gets sidetracked when he comes across a new car. Here's the brief plot summary:

An enigmatic stranger, a couple who no longer exist, danger in the shadows and the key to it all... The new Ford Edge.

It's an awesomely made and slick-looking film that turned out to be very fun and intense. I really like the character that they've set up in the story and I'd actually love to see a full movie centered around him. Check out the short and let us know what you think!

Miranda Sings Answers Your Questions in Latest Promo For HATERS BACK OFF

Haters Back Off has been on Netflix for a little over a week now and I still haven't decided whether or not I'm going to watch it. The trailer had me on the fence, and I can't say this latest video has gotten me off the post yet. I might just have to suck it up and dive in tonight when my wife inevitably gets bored of the Black Mirror marathon.

Maybe the new video, in which character Miranda answers fan questions, will sway you?

Video: Kate McKinnon's Ridiculous GHOSTBUSTERS Outtakes

In my controversially positive review of Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, I described actress Kate McKinnon as "a movie star waiting to happen, a delightfully zany presence whose facial expressions and darting eyes are almost as funny as her dialogue." While some people didn't dig her off-the-wall performance as Holtzmann, I thought she brought the movie a nice spark of weirdness that served it well.

Now /Film points us to a video of her outtakes from the film, and at nine minutes long, it's pretty rough to watch the entire thing — even for someone like me who thinks she's hilarious and one of the best parts of Saturday Night Live. There are some flashes of humor in there, of course, but it's clear that she's just basically throwing everything at the wall in the hope that something sticks.

We see videos like this pop up sometimes, but they're rarely this long and rarely contain the sheer amount of alternate jokes seen here, so more than anything else, this video sort of hammered home for me the idea that as an actor in an improv-heavy comedy, you're not just getting paid for what ends up on screen, you're getting paid for having the endurance to grind through day after day of endless jokes in the hopes of finding the ones that work.

New Photo of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in JUSTICE LEAGUE

Wonder Woman is celebrating her 75th anniversary this year, and the United Nations has gone as far as to make her an Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls. Pretty cool stuff, and you can watch a video with DC Films' Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins in the player below:

Also, director Zack Snyder apparently shared this new photo (above) on Twitter of Gadot in character in Justice League, but I haven't been able to access Twitter for the past few hours because of those damned hackers that have been messing with DNS servers around the world today, so I'm just going to have to take ComingSoon's word for it.

Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 2, 2017, and Justice League arrives on November 17, 2017.

Matthew Perry Explains How M. Night Shyamalan Gave Him a Crazy Twist in Real Life

"What a twist!" It's a phrase synonymous with M. Night Shyamalan, and apparently not just indicative of his films. Matthew Perry was a guest on Graham Norton when he shared a hilarious story about a meeting with the director, and the plot twist is so great, only Shyamalan himself could have written it. I won't spoil it for you because Perry tells the story so well! On a side note, he seems like a completely different person than who he played on Friends. I suppose that's true with most actors, but it's almost a little jarring to see him not acting like Chandler.

Second side note: this interview is from January, but it's just now gaining some traction on Reddit so that's why you're seeing it today! Enjoy.

Leonardo DiCaprio Lines Up Another Biopic; Will Play The Music Producer Who Launched Elvis, Johnny Cash, and More

Leonardo DiCaprio has portrayed Howard Hughes, J. Edgar Hoover, Hugh Glass, Jordan Belfort, and Frank Abagnale Jr., but he's not done playing real people on the big screen just yet.

Deadline reports that on the heels of the announcement that the recent Oscar winner is gearing up to star in Truevine, DiCaprio is also looking to play famed music producer Sam Phillips in a new movie for Paramount Pictures. The studio just purchased the rights to a book called Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock ‘N’ Roll, and DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions is developing the film adaptation and looking for a writer and director to come on board.

Phillips was the man behind Sun Records, and is described like this in the book:

The music that he shaped in his tiny Memphis studio with artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Ike Turner, Howlin' Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash, introduced a sound that had never been heard before. He brought forth a singular mix of black and white voices passionately proclaiming the vitality of the American vernacular tradition while at the same time declaring, once and for all, a new, integrated musical day.

Dallas Roberts played Phillips opposite Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line, which you can see in this scene:

No timetable yet for this one, but DiCaprio is now deciding between this, Truevine, and The Devil in the White City as his next project, so we'll hopefully be hearing an update about his decision soon.

The classic 1984 film The NeverEnding Story was one of the greatest and most imaginative movies that I saw as a kid. I freakin' love that movie! I know a lot of you have a love for it as well, and I've got something really cool for you to watch today!

This is a documentary for The NeverEnding Story and it's absolutely fascinating. The whole thing is in German but there are English subtitles. The greatest thing about the doc is all of the incredibly fun behind-the-scenes footage you get to see of the film being shot. That's what makes this worth the watch, and I promise it's worth it.

(Don't forget to listen to the episode of The Not Just New Movies podcast that includes a review of the film, too.)

Donald Glover Officially Cast as Lando Calrissian in HAN SOLO Film!

It has officially been announced that Donald Glover of Community, The Martian, and Atlanta has been cast in the role of Lando Calrissian in the untitled Han Solo Star Wars movie! The news came straight from the official Star Wars Twitter feed:

The casting couldn't be more perfect. The rumor of his possible casting broke back in August and fans were thrilled at the possibility of seeing the actor play the character. Well, now it's all official and we are actually going to get to see Glover as Calrissian! How freakin' cool is that! I have no doubt he'll offer fans a great fun take on the character made famous by Billy Dee Williams.

Glover will star alongside Alden Ehrenreich, who was already cast in the role of Han Solo. Both of these iconic characters are being played by very talented individuals and I'm so excited to see what adventure is in store for them! The press release offers the following details:

This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy's underworld -- years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.

Director's Phil Lord and Chris Miller released the following statement:

“We're so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations.  Also, we'd like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

The movie is scheduled for release on May 25, 2018. Are you excited to hear that Glover will be playing Lando?

Witness The Power of This Death Star Popcorn Maker

I don't know if it's because the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story centers on the rebels stealing the Death Star plans, but that giant space station/weapon seems to be getting a lot of love these days. In the last year alone, we've seen a toaster, a paper lantern, a grill, a fire pit, a LEGO build, and a Bluetooth speaker based on the Death Star, and now there's a new one added into the mix.

Amazon is selling a Death Star-themed popcorn maker that uses hot air to pop its corn, and the top half of the space station doubles as a bowl from which to eat your newly-popped snack. You can pick up this sucker for $49.99, and just imagine each kernel is a different planet exploding as it pops.
